Nimes

Nîmes, a city in the Occitanie region of southern France, was an important outpost of the Roman Empire. It’s known for well-preserved Roman monuments such as the Arena of Nîmes, a double-tiered circa-70 A.D. amphitheater still in use for concerts and bullfights. Both the Pont du Gard tri-level aqueduct and the Maison Carrée white limestone Roman temple are around 2,000 years old.

Temple antique
Sights & Landmarks
Maison Carrée, also known as "square house," is a well-preserved Roman temple located in Nimes, France. It was built in 4AD and dedicated to the princes of youth, Emperor Augustus' adopted grandson. The temple features richly decorated columns and friezes. Over the centuries, it has served various purposes such as a church, stables, and even a museum of fine arts.
A masterpiece of ancient Roman architecture, this is considered the best-preserved Roman temple in the world, symbolizing the era of Pax Romana. Constructed between 16 BCE and 4 CE, it was dedicated to Gaius and Lucius Caesar, adopted sons of Emperor Augustus, serving as a temple of imperial cult worship. Throughout the Middle Ages, it was repurposed as a town hall, church, and storehouse. From 1821 to 1907, it housed the Musée des Beaux-Arts, which contributed to its preservation. The temple features a hexastyle façade with six Corinthian columns and a pseudoperipteral layout—engaged columns along the cella walls creating the illusion of a full colonnade. Its harmonious proportions and refined decorative elements have inspired many later buildings, including the Virginia State Capitol (USA) and La Madeleine in Paris. ※ Included in the Pass Romanité.

It's a beautiful building to admire from ancient Roman times. The exterior looks impressive and it's located in a lovely spot in Nîmes. I didn't see the inside because there was an entrance fee and I was told there wasn't much to see."
Joost H — Google review
An absolutely beautiful and well conserved classic temple. The museum itself is very small (one room) so a visit inside will be a very quick visit - one could certainly view from the outside only.
Andrew V — Google review
Beautiful Roman temple from 1st century BC. The entry ticket allows you to go in and read a couple of information on the monument's history. While you can just poke your head inside and read the Wikipedia entry to get more context about the place, paying the ticket could help support the maintenance of the monuments.
Mi H — Google review
There are 2 sides to this review. 1. Stunning architecture, a building that has stood for 1000’s of years passed the passage of time for of that it’s well worth the visit. 2, however there is nothing inside than the very informative information boards in one room that you pay €5 and queue for 20 mins. I get the contribution to upkeep, More interesting from the outside.
Graham R — Google review
Best preserved temple of it's inid anywhere. There are a few pillars in Barcelona (allegedly) and one still standing in Pula, bu neither compares to this. Not much to see in the little museum, but like any great art or delicious food you can enjoy it over and over again just being in it's presence and feasting on its history and magnificence.
Bruce R — Google review
This is a place you don’t need to buy a ticket to visit—just staying outside and taking pictures is enough. Inside, it’s very small, about the size of a living room, with some photos and slides showcasing its history.
Rio C — Google review
A near completely restored temple dedicated to youth with ornate gables and columns. Inside is an museum showing what surrounded the temple and what was inside the temple.

Park
Nature & Parks
Jardin de La Fontaine is a 17th-century park spanning 15 hectares, featuring Roman ruins, botanic gardens, ponds, and sculptures. It houses the oldest Roman structure in Nimes, the Tour Magne, situated on Mont Cavalier within the garden grounds. Notably, it was Europe's first public garden built on the site of an ancient Roman spring called La Source in the 18th century.
An absolute must in Nimes. The oldest public gardens in Europe. Beautifully laid out historic gardens with lots of classical architecture, statues, and Roman ruins. A superb restaurant in the centre, nice inside, but lots of alfresco dining, which is absolutely lovely.
GRAHAM B — Google review
Commissioned by King Louis XV in 1745, this is one of the oldest public gardens in Europe. It was built around La Fontaine, a natural spring venerated by the people of Nîmes for millennia, and once the heart of a sacred Gallo-Roman sanctuary. Designed by Jacques-Philippe Mareschal and Pierre Dardailhon, the garden harmoniously blends Roman ruins with the aesthetics of a formal French garden. It features a lower section in the classical French formal style and an upper section landscaped in a more natural, Mediterranean style.
Seokjin H — Google review
A beautiful garden with many walkways, plazas and viewpoints. The stairs and fountains are truly beautiful and there are some amazing panorama views of the city. It is quite a climb to the top though, with many staircases and ramps, so be make sure you bring your walking shoes!
Connor G — Google review
Fabulous park with fountains, gardens, canal with big carp, lots of stairs to climb if you wish for the view. Great way to spend a relaxing hour or two.

This park has so much to offer; from ancient Roman ruins, botanical gardens, 16th century pondages and sculpture features. All to make the visit memorable.

Cultural landmark
Sights & Landmarks
Tour Magne is a remarkable 18-meter stone watchtower that forms part of the Roman city wall from the Augustinian era. Situated on the highest hill in Nimes, it offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding area. Along with other Roman monuments like Amphitheatre and Maison Caree, Tour Magne adds to Nimes' historical significance. The tower stands as the oldest Roman structure in Nimes and is located within Jardins de la Fontaine on Mont Cavalier.
Very cool historical place. Wonderful view of Nimes. Take hand wipes or latex gloves. The iron handrail to the top of the tower is sticky and rusty.
Stewart R — Google review
Not for the faint-hearted! The Tower is on a hill, giving it a great vantage point. It's a steep walk up, so take plenty of water on a warm day. There are over 180 steps to the top of the tower. Not recommended for anyone with vertigo, or claustrophobia, as the stairs narrow at the top. I chickened out over half way up! Great views over Nîmes and its surrounding area. We'd purchased the Arena/Tour/Temple/Museum ticket and managed to do them all over a 6 hour time period.
Christine M — Google review
Cool monument! Great view from the top. You can use the pass of 3 monuments for it. There’s a limit of people to climb on the top so you might have to wait few minutes for others coming down.
G T — Google review
Tour Magne is originally a Roman construction offering a commanding view over Nimes and it's environs. You can climb to the top using a spiral staircase around a central supporting column to a smallish viewing balcony. It is possible to just pass on the main spiral staircase but on the other levels you need to 'tuck in' to let people pass. This may not be good if you have issues with claustrophobia or vertigo.
Paul B — Google review
Cracking monument, well worth the climb to the top for the views.
Yvonne K — Google review
It’s a bit far from the Nimes center. A historical place and you can go to the top to see the city view. The terrace is small however not many people on the top, you also can enjoy the view.
Rio C — Google review
This is the only surviving tower from the ancient Roman fortifications of Nîmes. The site originally hosted a dry-stone tower built around 400 BCE by the Gallic tribe Volques Arécomiques, measuring approximately 18 meters in height. In the 1st century BCE, under Emperor Augustus, the Romans incorporated and extended this Gallic structure, raising it to about 36 meters as part of a larger sacred and defensive complex. The current height is about 32.5 meters, with part of the third level now lost. The summit offers stunning views over the city of Nîmes and the surrounding landscapes, including the Alpilles mountain range. ※ Included in the Pass Romanité.

Amphitheater
Sights & Landmarks
The Amphitheatre of Nîmes is an imposing Roman structure that serves as the epicenter of the city's Roman history. With a seating capacity of 24,000 and standing at 69 feet high, it is one of the best-preserved arenas outside Italy. Visitors can explore the arena's nooks and crannies, gaining insight into where animals, slaves, and soldiers awaited their battles.
The Nîmes Amphitheater is one of the most impressive and best-preserved Roman arenas in the world. Built around 70 AD, shortly after the Colosseum in Rome, it could seat up to 24,000 spectators and was used for gladiator fights, wild animal hunts, and public spectacles that thrilled Roman crowds. Its oval shape spans 436 feet long and 331 feet wide, with a complex system of corridors, staircases, and galleries that allowed for quick access—an architectural marvel even by today’s standards. What makes the arena unique isn’t just its state of preservation, but the way it’s still alive today: the amphitheater continues to host concerts, festivals, and even bullfights, blending ancient tradition with modern culture.
Philippe Q — Google review
Incredibly well preserved Roman amphitheatre in Nîmes, France. It is just like visiting the Colosseum in Rome but it is far less busy and in considerably better condition-- they even still hold events here! My only regret is not being able to see an event in the arena, as I can only imagine this would be spectacular. In any case it is a very worthwhile sight to see in Nîmes
Connor G — Google review
We ticked off a bucket list item today by visiting the Arena in Nimes and it didn’t disappoint. The history of this incredible structure makes you want to go back in time and just see what life was like. It is bigger and more impressive than we expected. As we left we walked through the gift shop and the lovely Agnes (I so hope I have the name correct) chatted with us and told us some other places to go, she was so lovely and proud of this beautiful area! It isn’t just the Arena, it is the entire area, stunning, surprising and full of history, I am so glad I have experienced it.
Loralee M — Google review
Beautiful amphitheatre. Make sure you check that there are no ongoing shows at night because you won't be able to enter unless you buy a ticket! I believe until the 18th of August (2025) there are shows every night, Dream of a Gladiator. It was quite nice, for a not too bad a of a price. The theater has now seating on top of the stone seating so definitely takes a way from the actual look of the amphitheatre. Quite impressive and unexpected!
Elana P — Google review
We were there early November and practically had the place to ourselves. What a treat! The free audio guide is an absolute must. Lots of good info in succinct pieces (not overwhelming). So many extra side exhibits to entertain all ages. Dog friendly, too!
Robert B — Google review
We spent about 3 hours exploring this site. It was the reason we came to Nîmes, and we were not disappointed. The view of the city from the topmost row of seats is beautiful, even if climbing up there was a bit vertigo-inducing! The two small enclosed exhibits on the ground floor were interesting, too.
Rachel — Google review
The interior and exterior are beautiful and crowded with tourists. It is recommended to buy tickets online beforehand so that you do not have to queue for the audio guide. We can download the audio guide by QR code and then listen to it by number.
Jiraporn C — Google review
Built around AD 90–100, about two decades after the Colosseum in Rome, the arena is one of the best-preserved Roman amphitheaters in the world. Constructed as a grand entertainment venue for the citizens of the Roman colony of Nemausus, the structure stands approximately 21 meters tall with a two-tiered facade composed of 60 arches per level, totaling 120 arches in a highly refined architectural design. From the 13th to the 18th century, the arena was transformed into a fortress-like residential quarter, housing over 700 inhabitants. In 1786, the internal dwellings were gradually dismantled to restore the monument’s original form. Originally capable of accommodating around 24,000 spectators, the venue now holds approximately 16,000 people for safety and conservation purposes. Today, the amphitheater serves as a dynamic cultural and entertainment space, hosting traditional bullfights, Camargue-style bull games, the annual Festival de Nîmes, concerts, and historical reenactments. ※ Included in the Pass Romanité.

Market
Les Halles de Nîmes is a bustling covered market with over 100 stalls, offering a wide variety of local gastronomic specialties. Visitors can indulge in PDO picholine olives, olive oil, anchoiade, Pelardons goat cheeses from nearby Cevennes, and Costieres de Nimes wines. The market is a food lover's paradise where one can savor regional cuisine such as brandade de morue and taureau with Camargue rice.
Wonderful market with a large variety of choices. Fishmongers, butchers, charcuterie, local specialties such as brandade, rouille, alioli, Camargue rice, cheeses, ground coffee, olives and tapenades, baked goods, fresh pasta and of course fruit and veg, are plentiful. There are a couple of places to eat as well. Best to go later in the week if you want to see everybody open, but even on slower days you can find a plethora of good stuff.

A local market with many fruit stands and bakery shops. All fruits are delicious and pastries there are so yummy. This is one of the places I’d highly recommend
Rio C — Google review
Great fresh market and wonderful pre-prepared foods. Spacious, clean and friendly. Prices seemed reasonable for the quality. It's also attached to a mall. Highly recommend 🇨🇦
Kari Q — Google review
Established in 1884, this traditional indoor market underwent architectural renewal in the 1970s but still preserves the legacy of 19th-century glass-and-iron market design. It offers a vibrant showcase of local culinary culture and fresh regional produce. With over 100 stalls and shops selling vegetables, meats, seafood, cheeses, olives, wines, and more, the market is a hub of daily life in Nîmes. The interior layout is uniquely organized by aisles named after spices, enhancing the charm of the space.
Seokjin H — Google review
Fresh market, very clean and easy to walk around. There is a wide variety of food to choose from. Parking is in the same building as the market.

Superb market in one of the gastronomy centers of southern France. Shopped here often during our week in Nîmes; bought fish, beef, chicken, cheese, vegetables, bread, wine. Everything fresh, most of it local. Do yourself a favor and find a place in Nîmes with a kitchen for at least a few days so you can take advantage of what this market has to offer.

Restaurant
Le Lisita is a charming brasserie offering a range of delicious gourmet dishes and local wines in a classic dining room with a terrace that overlooks an amphitheater. The restaurant provides a truly spectacular view of the wonderful Arena and offers options such as pork, veal, home-made burgers, and generous salads. The seasonal menus feature delightful dishes like celery remoulade spiked with summer truffles and thyme-infused brandade by chef Olivier Douet.
Adorable little restaurant in front of the Arenas. Very cozy and classy at the same time with reasonable prices considering the quantity and quality of the meals. The foie gras was a delight, the cheese of very good quality too. I particularly recommend the menu that was exceptional in term of variety, balance and once again quality. Glasses of regional wines are also very good.

Absolutely dreadful, a horrible advert for Nines. Waited 30 minutes without anyone coming. Owner came by and smiled.. he said "you will be served soon, I love it when it is busy, we make lots of money!" All in English... the waiter for our area didn't exist. I went in and was told they were all busy and said they weren't responsible for our table. I spoke in English and French. Made no difference. They simply didn't care. We walked out.
Steve F — Google review
The food was soo disappointing. The item was not at all as described, the fish stringy and the sauce too sweet to eat. Instead of the seasonal legumes listed on the menu, the dish came with a pile of overcooked, soggy courgette, also soaked in the overly sweet sauce. It was really quite inedible, sad to say. Quite an anomaly in a town where excellent food is the norm. The food and the location were lovely, however.
Brealyn S — Google review
We had the 3 course lunch for €32 each, and the main course was spectacular. Appetizer was decent, and dessert was good. Cute spot with a direct view of the arena. Service wasn't great, and the dishes took a long time to arrive.
Erick S — Google review
I went there quite late at night (09.00pm, which is late for France) , the place was almost empty, so I didn't have any problem with waiting. The waiter was fast , the food was tasty (a beef tartare), the wine very good, the price OK. The only problem was a group of noisy, uncivilized americans (this seems to be the rule) who behaved as if the place belonged to them. But this of course has nothing to do with the establishment itself.
Kiros K — Google review
Friendly and very helpful staff, good atmosphere. Tasty and well presented food. Saturday night very lively with a live Dj, we had a good time. For us non speaking French everyone made an effort to communicate with us. I would recommend this place to everyone.

Food is fresh, staff is helpful and friendly! Of course it's right downtown in a touristy area, so expect a wait. But it's a locally owned business and the terrace is lovely!

Good food, awesome view, good wine. But only menus in French and slow service. I still recommend it, especially if the weather is good and you can sit outside with an awesome view of the arena.

Haute French restaurant
Restaurant Skab, a modern French dining spot, offers creative tasting menus in an unassuming setting with a charming shady courtyard. The seasonal menu by chef Damien Sanchez features dishes like crispy Provencal lamb and poached apple dessert. With fixed-price menus and a value weekday lunch option, it's perfect for both lunch and dinner. The restaurant also boasts an exquisite wine list curated by the owner who is a sommelier.
A superb experience for my very first Michelin star restaurant. I was amazed by the quality of every dish, and the level of craftsmanship that goes into each dish was beyond amazing. The service was absolutely five star as well: every server in a suit, high level of attention to detail, superb wine pairings and serene atmosphere. We ate for nearly 4 hours without interruption! Will come back next time I'm in town. Congrats to the entire team!

Memorable meal. Everything from the setting, the service and the food was exceptional. One of the best restaurant experiences I've ever had. The amount of detail and work that goes to every plate is amazing. We had the menu plaisir and every dish was delicious. The slice rack of veal was the tender, yet flavorful accompanied with a delicious jus and the freshest of asparagus. Unbelievable selection of cheeses and delicious desserts. The chef stopped by at the end to say hello and make sure everything went well. An experience to cherish and remember.

Food: Not bad Service: super slow, but polite. But extremely slow! we spent 4 hours for a dinner Atmosphere: nice, we stayed outside and it very cute. Price: super expensive for what it is. 45 euros for a starter with tomatos? Are you crazy? Overall: a super expensive restaurant with above average quality food and S L O W service.

This was a fantastic experience from start to finish. The chef takes so much care to make every dish come together to sing in a true chorus of flavors. I also have a gluten allergy, and there was so much I could eat I never once felt deprived. They even had gluten free bread! Upon hearing I hadn’t ordered his signature soufflé for dessert (I’d assumed it had gluten), the chef sent me one on his own to ensure I got to try it. The staff was absolutely lovely from start to finish, and the entire experience truly felt like Poetry in motion. I cannot wait to return!

Fine dining restaurant
Restaurant Vincent Croizard is located in the heart of Nimes, on a quiet street in an unassuming house. The intimate and warm atmosphere gives the feeling of dining at a friend's place. Chef Vincent Croizard's menu reflects his dedication to seasonal produce and emphasis on plant-based dishes while carefully selecting animal proteins. The restaurant offers beautifully presented dishes with a blend of Western and Eastern influences in a tastefully decorated setting.
The fusion of different flavours is always an eating experience of a Michelin quality. It never disappoints. Each course is a revelation. Service is personal, one feels appreciated as a customer.

A real treasure in Nimes. Warm and welcoming, the service is impeccable and as charming as the eclectic interior. The food just got better and better with each course. Bursting with unexpected flavours. Wonderful wine list with an excellent selection by the glass.

My guests and I had a wonderful experience at the Restaurant Vincent Croizard. The entrance to the restaurant was intriguing (you have to ring the bell). It was very clean and welcoming. The staff were very patient, attentive and very knowledgeable. They explained the different dishes graciously. We went from discovery to discovery and our palets were more than satisfied. The decor was exquisite and refined, lots of plants. The table was nicely set with fine porcelaine. And I was surprised with a special birthday dessert. An extraordinary experience! Thank you.

The food was wonderful. We had steak (their most expensive dish) and it was just a huge amount of meat. And it was amazing. Soft. Juicy accompanied with some morels. Just great. The restaurant has an amazing view on one of the biggest attractions of the Nimes - Arenes de Nimes. We were seated at the time of the business lunch even without reservation. The service could be a little bit better. Everything is fine except waiting time. Also there is an amazing rooftop with free access, don't forget to visit it. There is a wonderful view of the city from above

Food: signature menu- was tasty but I expected a bit more Service: waiters need solid training, new uniforms and have to learn how to serve people.Im surprised how inattentive they were, and how messy the table was during our meal. At the end without asking us first if we wanted anything the waiter showed up with a bill and said that they were closing - it was 23:10 ( they officially close at 00:00) I'm not sure how this place got a Michelin star Atmosphere: relaxing with a nice view
AnITa_day — Google review
The stylish restaurant is next to the arena and has a great view. The portions were not so significant, but they were enough, and the food was generally good. English makes things a bit harder, and they sold us ducks as chickens, but overall, it was a great experience, and the service was fair, with a good view of the city.
Kris T — Google review
Good view, great food, lovely service. The artichoke soup was interesting, but not very generous. The entrée with egg (which I forgot the name) looked tasty, but nothing special in it: quite tasteless actually. If you are looking for something different, I don't suggest to order the tartar. However, the shrimp dish was really good, the shrimps were fresh and tasty in themselves already! So you'd better order seafood or a dish prepared with a local products. The place is clean and just right. The restaurant is totally well located

This lunch was a final point on our trip to Nîmes. Unfortunately, it brought a kind of disappointment to us. First, I made an order for me and than for my wife. In 30 minutes I asked where is my food as my wife was waiting for me as she had been served. So, her meal was already cold when the waiter answered that I hadn’t ordered anything except wine. I had to repeat my order and he finally brought it. It could have been a misunderstanding if he hadn’t tried to persuade me that it’s my failure. My food was quite nice but my wife didn’t like her meal at all as it was too fat. At the same time, wine was great. I could recommend this place just to see the great view of the Nîmes Arena. That’s it.

We had dinner here on our first night while visiting Nimes in May earlier this year. The restaurant is located on the rooftop of the Musée de la Romanité and it overlooks the arena. The view is really pretty at night but that is really the only highlight of the meal. The interior and exterior spaces felt cold and sterile, not cozy or romantic at all. The food was just average. There was nothing we had that was memorable. And the service was average at best. The waiter was not attentive and never asked if we liked our appetizers or entrees. Overall, the only great thing about this restaurant is the view.
C W — Google review
This was a very odd experience, unfortunately. Not bad, but could have been much better. We both went for the set menu priced at €36. The first dish was the poached egg one, which was a good concept but I just found it bizarre that it was served cold. The egg was poached well, spinach cooked perfectly and the comte sauce good with crunchy croutons adding texture but it was pretty much served fridge temperature which surprised me, not in a good way. The main was veal blanquette which was presented in a modern style. The dish again tasted good, but the meat was a bit chewy, verging on inedible in places. The vegetable garnishes and rice were all cooked accurately and tasty but the main element let it down. For dessert I had the chocolate option which was basically a broken up crispy cake with Chantilly cream. It was nice enough if not kind blowing and needed more of the fruit gel to really ramp up the flavours. Service was excellent when you got it but it was far too slow and staff were often seen standing around inside the restaurant. This meal took nearly three hours which is just way too long. There were only 8-9 tables in so it's not like they were rushed off their feet. Could be so good but needs work

We went here for lunch based on TripAdvisor reviews and were not disappointed. If you like South-American flavours (Peru, Bolivia,...) you must give this place a try. We had the empañadas, which were fingerlicking good. Prices are very affordable, service is friendly and the interior cosy.

Good place to eat empanadas from Argentina. Turist environment. Be ready to wait if there the resto is full. Only one cooker and one waiter. Expensive beer if you compare with food price. Dulce de leche dessert so good. No air conditioning, it's a shame.

Unreal! A real pop up in the wall of a quiet typical street in Nimes. I was blown away by how authentic this place is. Colourfully painted in true Argentinean atmosphere, tables and chairs to match, great music and live music later in the evening. The food was amazing. All to order and great quality. A big selection of with South American beers, rums and colas. They also have a selection of spices foods and drinks you can buy to take home. We bought chimichurri sauce for our next bbq at home. A must visit for an Argentinean escape in Nimes!

(Translated by Google) Latin food. They make very good empanadas and have several cheap menus (for example 4 empanadas + salad + dessert for €14). The recommended dessert Foundant de dulce de leche. Good service and colorful place, Latin decoration. (Original) Comida latina. Hacen empanadas muy buenas y tienen varios menús económicos (por ejemplo 4 empanadas + ensalada + postre por 14€). El postre recomendable Foundant de dulce de leche. El servicio bueno y el local vistoso, decoración latina.

(Translated by Google) The best! Very welcoming little restaurant. It is better to book. The food is fresh and well cooked. Very good value for money. Enchiladas for 3.5 euros with different menus depending on appetite. They change the menu depending on the season. I recommend! (Original) Le top! Petit restaurant très accueillant.
