In the center there is a life-size monument to our compatriot, literary critic, publicist and theorist Vissarion Grigorievich Belinsky. The height of the impressive figure is 5.5 meters, and the monument is installed on a pedestal 5 meters high. Here you can see the letters of the publicist’s name and years of life. A symbol of the liberal intelligentsia, Belinsky was received ambiguously during the years of his life during the reigns of Nicholas I and Alexander II. He put forward many ideas that later became popular among revolutionaries. He expressed the idea and substantiated the theory of realism. The name of the publicist was not even used directly, but was replaced with a title that everyone understood: a critic of the Gogol period. He worked for the Telescope magazine, translating materials for publications, then began to write himself. Literary critical articles were published from the author's pen. Later he was the editor of the Moscow Observer, then moved to St. Petersburg, where he lived since 1839 and worked at Otechestvennye zapiski. Several years passed in this way, after which Belinsky began working in the new magazine Sovremennik. The last years of his life forced him to move to Germany for treatment, which, unfortunately, did not produce results. The author died in 1848 in St. Petersburg. One way or another, Vissarion Grigorievich left behind fame and legacy; the Park of Culture and Recreation in the Western Glade of the city bears his name, and this monument was also erected in the park of the same name. The history of the monument is quite interesting. Back in 1897, after employees of the Lermontov Library applied to the State Duma, they were refused. Belinsky's daughter found out about this and decided to help by sending a small bust of her father from France, where she lived. However, it was only installed in 1911. The monument was destroyed in 1918, during the uprising of the Czechoslovak Corps. The monument that guests and residents of Penza see today was laid in 1948, on the centenary of the publicist’s death. Work on it was carried out for more than one year. The sculpture was cast at the Leningrad plant "Monumentsculpture". The author is People's Artist of the USSR Leonid Polyakov. By the way, he was present at the opening of the monument in the park in 1954. The monument is classified as a cultural heritage site of federal significance. The square itself and the monument are one of the famous landmarks for meeting people. There is a small well-kept garden here; flowers grow in the warm season. From here you can start a walk and go along Moskovskaya Street towards Western Polyana and see many interesting things, from horse and pony walks, the passage of a children's train, to many shopping centers and other squares and monuments. В центре располагается ростовой памятник нашему соотечественнику, литературному критику, публицисту и теоретику Виссариону Григорьевичу Белинскому. Высота внушительной фигуры составляет 5,5 метров, а установлен памятник на постаменте высотой в 5 метров. Здесь же можно увидеть буквы имени публициста и годы жизни. Символ либеральной интеллигенции, Белинский был неоднозначно воспринят в годы своей жизни при царствовании Николая I и Александра II. Great, exceptional place. The restaurant is constructed from timber and thus offers an extraordinary atmosphere. Kitchen offers tasty local dishes of high quality. In summer you might want to sit outside or even in small condominiums under the trees, which make you forget to be just a 10-15 minutes ride away from the city. Service is really taking care of their guests, what is remarkable in Russia indeed 😀. Strong recommendation, whenever you are in Penza 😉

Cosy and nicely decorated cafe. Ordered the sandwich and was delicious. Most importantly for tourist, it has English menu.

Authentic and cozy atmosphere. Tasty food and very good beer variety. Definitely can recommend this place to have a dinner.

The grilled lamb, potatoes with parmesan, and accompanying beers was a excellent meal. The meat was delicious and the price was very reasonable for what you get. I expected a much smaller portions of meat at this price.
