Santa Maria delle Carceri is a basilica located in the same piazza as the Emperor's Fortress. It was built in the 15th century and features architecturally valuable design by Giuliano da Sangallo. The church has a Greek cross shape and a dome, with an unfinished outer facing in white-green marble. Nearby attractions include Palazzo Datini, Church of San Domenico, and the Museum of Mural Paintings featuring works by renowned artists.
A beautiful peaceful church with a wonderful background. My son was baptised here so I make sure to visit a few times a year. Parking can be a little difficult but after church the beautiful square and surrounding shops make for a good afternoon on a shopping spree.

(Translated by Google) We were informed that we absolutely had to use the backpack locker to visit the museum AFTER purchasing the tickets (small backpacks, certainly not school bags). We offered to keep them in the front so as not to risk damaging the works (we're certainly not children and know how to manage an art exhibition visit), but we were rudely refused, insisting that we use the lockers. Fortunately for us, too, the card refused the transaction to complete the ticket purchase, an opportunity that the staff seized upon to be even more rude and impolite. I note now that the official website and Facebook page don't require backpacks as a "visit rule," because had we known this in advance, we would have prepared differently (and if we had been informed beforehand, we would have considered it accordingly). I don't think this was professional or honest behavior. If you're considering a visit, I recommend keeping in mind that the lockers they offer for storing personal belongings aren't checked. Also note that I've been there before and had a backpack, and on that occasion I wasn't even asked to carry it in front. Is this a rule applied depending on who's selling the tickets and/or how they feel? Very, very unfair. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- We were ordered to leave our backpack in their (probably unsupervised) cabinet only after purchasing the tickets. We had pretty small bags, too. Anyway, we offered to just hold our backpacks in front of us (as is sufficient in other museums), but our request was rudely refused. We've been lucky our credit card refused the transaction a few seconds later, an event used by the museum staff to become even more rude. Such rules are not specified on their museum website and Facebook page, so we had no way of knowing that beforehand. Regardless, that was absolutely unprofessional. If you are considering to visit the place I recommend you to take into consideration these unwritten rules. On a final note, I distinctly remember visiting the musuem before without any similar rule being enforced. Molto molto scorretto. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- We have been ordered to leave our backpack in their (probably unsupervised) cabinet only after purchasing the tickets. (Translated by Google) Perhaps the only place in Prato worth a visit. I was here on March 8, 2025, and the museum is truly beautiful and well-maintained. When I visited, I was the only one there, and I had the entire museum to myself. Next to many of the works, there was a QR code that, when scanned, opened a very interesting audio description. The museum appears to have been recently renovated, as it has new, modern equipment. The only things I didn't appreciate were that the panoramic terrace and the façade were under restoration, so I wasn't allowed to enjoy the view from there, and the exorbitant price of the ticket. It's absurd to charge such a high price for a museum. It's a shame, though, if you're in Prato, you must visit. For me, it was worth it, and I was pleasantly surprised.

Located in Prato, Italy, the Centro per l'Arte Contemporanea Luigi Pecci is a pioneering multidisciplinary arts center housed in a distinctive building. Since its establishment in 1988, it has been dedicated to showcasing international avant-garde art and has amassed a significant permanent collection featuring over 1,000 works by three hundred artists from the last three decades.
It was my first ever visit at Centro Pecci, i was literally mind blowed. It is the second contemporary hub ever opened in Italy, careful it is not a gallery or a museum but it is much more. Please read online for more info. The general manager, Stefano, gave us a tour showing the different areas of the exhibition that has an insane in-depth study of the details from architecture, lights exposition to setting and last the outstanding selection of artists and works. The tour and the level of the presentation was far above any expectations, emotional and in the same time entertaining product of a very talented and knowledgeable GM. I will surely come back. It is a must see stop / designation for contemporary art enthusiast and collectors as myself. 10/10

Visited the museum on a saturday morning and it was good, I loved Marcon's rooms. But the bistro was the real thing, the guy with glasses was so friendly and made me the best cappuccino I had in Italy. And he told me that his sister lives in Poland as well! Even the sciacciatina was very good. Thank u!

The building itself is very impressive. Maybe I got there on a bad day but the exhibits were seriously dated, spectacularly academic and non visual. The content focused on a set of existentialist conceptual artists. The experience stuck me as though the museum could not afford to mount a real contemporary show & instead had pulled out notes and photos of artists and their work from their library.

The museum also features ancient wool processing machines, providing insight into traditional craftsmanship. Additionally, the area boasts other cultural attractions such as the Center for Contemporary Art Luigi Pecci and the Museum and Documentation Center of deportation and resistance, offering diverse experiences for history enthusiasts.
Empty on a Sunday, interesting to see the different materials and 500yr old clothes. Lots of empty halls though, and you seem to have to walk through the museum and all the way back the same way to get out. Weird layout!

This imposing structure was built at the behest of Emperor Frederick II and is considered a prime example of 11th-13th century architecture in Prato.
Beautiful city ce ter in Prato. We sat and ate pizza from a local place and watched the sunset. Unfortunately, we got to town too late to see the inside. Walk around, check out the local artist shops and people watch! Picturesque, meandering streets.

The Emperor's Castle is located in Prato in Piazza delle Carceri. It is an example of Frederick-era architecture, built by order of Emperor Frederick II of Swabia, as part of the struggle for dominance in Tuscany between the empire and the papacy that characterized the decades around 1200. History and description edit The site of today's castle once housed the Alberti family's fort of Prato, which was almost completely razed to the ground in 1107 during the siege by Matilda of Canossa's troops. In its place, another palace, called "Palazzolo," was rebuilt to house the nuncios of Emperors Henry VI of Swabia and Otto IV of Brunswick (two towers remain, the ones without battlements, which until 1767-68 were about double their current height); The area surrounding the castle has always been strategic, so much so that documents dating back to 1035[2] attest to the presence of an older "palatium"; this building was the nucleus of the Castrum Prati, the village that arose above the palace, which also contained an ancient parish church (Santa Maria in Castello, which no longer exists). The construction commission was entrusted by Frederick II to Riccardo da Lentini, probably starting in 1240. The castle, originally tangent to the second circle of walls (12th century), was partially surrounded by a moat and connected to the Albertian prisons, from whose definition "prisons" the nearby Marian sanctuary took its name. It has eight towers and, like Castel del Monte, has various symbolic aspects inherent in both its structure and its portal. Once completed, it was intended to be used as an important garrison for the empire, testifying to the emperor's presence in his northern possessions. However, its construction was interrupted around 1250 due to the emperor's premature death, and the unfinished structure was subsequently used for many other purposes. During the 14th century, under Florentine rule, the castle was connected to the third ring of walls by a covered corridor called the "Corridore del Cassero" (meaning: castle corridor), or simply the Cassero. This allowed Florentine troops to safely enter the city from outside the walls using a protected passage. Over the centuries, several houses were built inside and around the structure. In the 1930s, under Fascist rule, all the houses were demolished, and the castle assumed its current appearance, consisting essentially of only the exterior walls. The simultaneous opening of Viale Piave also led to the demolition of much of the Cassero structure, of which two sections remain. Also interesting, behind the castle itself, are the remains of the hospital and the corresponding church of San Giovanni Gerosolimitano (or of the Knights of Malta), built outside the walls in the mid-12th century and currently abandoned, but which still preserves small and rare anthropomorphic traces in Romanesque terracotta. The cuisine at Raja Indian Lounge Restaurant is delectable, offering a milder and less spicy taste compared to typical American fare. The garlic naan resembles pizza in appearance, possibly paying homage to Italian food, yet still maintains its traditional and delightful flavor. The staff members are incredibly friendly and fluent in English. They go the extra mile by explaining the menu, highlighting vegetarian options, and attentively checking in on guests during their meal.
Very tasty food. The flavor is a little lighter and less spicy than what we're used to in America. In a potential homage to Italian food, the garlic naan looks a bit like pizza, but it's still delicious and tastes like traditional garlic naan. The staff is super friendly and speaks English. They explained the menu to us, called out the vegetarian items, and checked in on us multiple times throughout the meal. The atmosphere is nice, as they have ample shaded outdoor seating and provide a small lamp at the table as the sun sets. It's pricier than the other Indian restaurants in the area, but it's worth it for the comfortable environment and excellent service.

Disappointing experience. Firstly the food is not authentic. They are selling a spoon of turmeric rice by calling it Biriyani. Ridiculously, they served a bread with some garlic paste on it and called it garlic naan. Secondly, they compel you to order more. Thirdly, unfriendly staffs. Overall, if possible, avoid.

Wish I could give 10 stars! My husband and I walked in here on a Saturday evening hoping to get in as we had been driving all day and after a week of pizza and pasta were looking for something different. Sadly there were no reservations available and we were pretty bummed. But the staff didn’t turn us away, they offered to make some to go orders for us so we could atleast enjoy the food. And we really really did!! The food was absolutely delicious-and the staff was just wonderful! So friendly and kind. If we were staying near Prato for longer there’s no doubt we would be back here again! I would highly recommend this place! Seriously , we wish we had it close to us back in the U.S!

This Restaurant is great! Atmosphere is chill and cool but the staff is also really friendly. A very good Indian restaurant with a tasty food and excellent service. Actually we got to the place when it was fully booked, but we managed easily to book a table for another day via WhatsApp, and our table waited for us. Everything we ordered was delicious, and the service was great. Staff was doing a good job of explaining us about the dishes. Points for improvement: 1. More vegetarian options (there was only one when we arrived) 2. English menu (surprise! no English! typically Indian places in Europe provide an English menu) Recommended, if you want a break from the local cuisine.

Baghino is a historical restaurant located in the heart of Prato's historic center, serving traditional cuisine for almost 150 years. Managed by the Pacetti family for five generations, it is currently run by sisters Silvia and Guia. The restaurant is known for its famous recipe traditions, including the renowned Sedani Ripieni alla Pratese, stuffed celery with their own ragu made of duck and beef meat cooked for four days.
We were really impressed after visiting this restaurant today for lunch. First at all, food was excellent, all 5 of us were totally satisfied with mains. Also, deserts were good (not the best tiramisu but great cream caramel). We also loved the ambience and the service of this place. And the most pleasant end of our lunch was to know the story of this place. Really amazing and beautiful! Leaving the restaurant we saw its owner in the kitchen, beautiful 93 years old woman who cooks here for her guests. So special experience!!

First impression would call for a 5 star rating. The bistecca tastes amazing and the selection of wines is good. However, the service level does not exactly match the rest, unfortunately. Wine was not opened at the table, we were not offered to taste the wine and the bottle was only placed at our table without being poured. Would expect this for a restaurant of this class.

L'Antilope is an exceptional dining establishment in Italy, offering a remarkable culinary experience. Unlike other restaurants in the area, it stands out as a hidden gem off the beaten path, attracting mainly local patrons. The staff members are extremely affable and accommodating, even if their command of English may be limited. The menu does not have an English translation; however, this only reinforces its authenticity and assures visitors that they will avoid falling into tourist traps.
Fantastic restaurant! Go there! I’ve had a lot of meals at different restaurants here in Italy. Some of them where not so good and some of them where fantastic. L’Antilope was definitely the best one! The stuff was very friendly and helped us to order even without speaking a lot of English and the food was delicious. Il Dek Italian Bistrot offers an eclectic and refined Italian cuisine, featuring a variety of seafood and land specialties, as well as sushi and pizza. The bistro is known for its charming atmosphere, especially when dining outside near the castle square. While some guests have experienced slight delays between courses, the overall experience is positive with friendly service and delicious food. The terrace provides a lovely setting for lunch, although some visitors have noted discrepancies in pricing.

Four of us for lunch. Two margarita pizzas , one salad and one carbonara dish. Pizzas were really blah tasting the vegetables were ok and the carbonara was just ok. What took me by the most surprise was the total amount of the bill. This place offers ok food with high prices. Can’t recommend.

We visited with a large group of about 20, which, admittedly, can be a challenge for any restaurant, but from the moment we sat down, it was clear the challenge might be mutual. The owner himself took our orders, armed with nothing but a pen, a scrap of paper, and a wing and a prayer. While charming in theory, the execution was... less so. Our family of four ordered a chicken dish, a chicken Caesar salad, a Caprese salad, and—out of sheer culinary curiosity—a starter listed as “rabbit cooked like tuna.” (A dish so cryptic it sparked a full-table debate and some light Googling.) When the food began to arrive, everyone was cautiously optimistic, except me, the lone soul left dishless and forgotten. The owner, doing a casual lap of the table, asked if everyone had their meal (which felt like something he should already know). I let him know that not only was the mystery rabbit a no-show, but my chicken dish hadn’t arrived either. His response? “Ah yes, the rabbit cooked like tuna is no longer available.” As for the chicken? “Oh... um... yes, that’ll take another 25–30 minutes.” Considering the rest of the table was already halfway through their meals, I suggested we cancel it altogether and I’d share my 10-year-old’s chicken Caesar—until he declared, with the brutal honesty only a child can muster, “This chicken is dry and cold.” He wasn’t wrong. It was also bland enough to make me question if the chef was in witness protection. My wife’s Caprese salad was “fine,” in the same way a lukewarm hotel coffee is fine, technically acceptable but far from memorable. Eventually, the owner returned, now offering to fast-track the chicken dish. I agreed, out of hunger and a faint glimmer of hope. When it finally arrived, it was... passable. Edible. Certainly not worth the suspense. At the end of the meal, I thanked the owner for trying to smooth things over, to which he responded (with complete sincerity), “Yes, I just took the chicken someone else ordered and gave it to you.” A fitting end to a meal best described as chaos with a side of confusion. Prices were ambitious given the quality, and while we appreciate a good story, I’d prefer mine not come at the expense of dinner.

Had a conference dinner here with a big group and overall it was a good experience: the food was tasty and the atmosphere outside - on the square next to the castle - hard to beat. The service was friendly and professional, although at points slightly disorganized. In terms of the food and serving, I wasn’t a huge fan of the “sharing” concept and the fact that several dishes were brought on larger plates to share, rather than individually plated. I understand though that this is more feasible for a large group. Overall still recommended!

We (4 adults, 2 children) had a lovely lunch on the terrace. Tasty starters and pasta. It wasn't cheap but overall priceworthy. Expect the Pizza MARGHERITA plus ham for the children. 24 Euro each, instead of 10 Euro as indicated on the menu (without ham). They charged 14 Euro (×2) extra for the ham..... That's a rip off.

Lovely meal in a superb spot across from the castle. Service was very prompt and efficient

Very good atmosphere and the setting paid off! Food was good and light. The only downside was the big delays between courses, possibly because we were a very big team of people and the restaurant was not adequately staffed to manage it properly. However, the whole experience was very positive. I believe that if someone goes to the bistro with a few friends it would be perfect!

The prices aren't cheap, but neither is the quality of the food. The pigeon dish I tried was delicious.

(Translated by Google) One of Prato's most historic seafood restaurants. The vintage decor feels like a step back in time. The fish is high-quality and fresh, and the dishes are simple yet effective. Very good first courses. The wine list offers a wide selection. The only downside is the slightly above-average prices.
