Cuenca

Cuenca is a city set in the mountains of east-central Spain. Founded by Moors, it retains its Historic Walled Town with steep cobbled streets and medieval castle ruins. Perched on a limestone spur high above the Júcar and Huécar rivers, it's most famous for its well-preserved "casas colgadas," or hanging houses. Cantilevered over the Huécar gorge, they seemingly cling to the cliffs’ edges.

Historical landmark
Casas Colgadas de Cuenca, also known as the Hanging Houses, are dramatic centuries-old houses built into a rock face with timber balconies hanging above a gorge. These iconic wooden balconies date back to the 15th century and are perched over the cliffs, offering breathtaking views of the valley of the river Huecar. The site also features Parador de Cuenca, located in the former Convent of San Pablo at the center of Hoz del Huecar.
Visited in August 2024 Beautiful houses built on the cliffs behind the Cathedral along the Jucar River. The other side of the river is the Antiguo Convento de San Pablo. Very unique and worth taking the time to see if you are even close to the area.

The Hanging Houses of Cuenca are truly a unique experience, something you won’t find in many places in the world. Just seeing how they hang over the cliffs is incredible. One of the best parts is that you can also look at them from the patio of the cathedral, so by visiting the cathedral you get two amazing sights in one. I truly recommend going and enjoy them

A must-see in Cuenca! Together with the bridge, very nice views. We came in October and the trees, the shades of green and yellow were amazing! ✨

Cuenca is one of the best cities we visited during the off-season, and we definitely recommend going there, as it has the best atmosphere we experienced among Spain’s ancient cities for tourists. We absolutely loved the hanging houses and the entire old town with its varying levels and the impressive fortifications that once made it almost impregnable. It’s incredibly beautiful, and if you climb higher, you get a stunning view of the entire city, both old and new, as well as the monasteries. The impressions were simply magical. We were lucky with the weather: the first day was rainy, which added a special atmosphere to the old town, making everything come alive, and then the next two days were sunny and warm, very welcoming. We also visited the Dinosaur Museum, which our son still fondly remembers. It was a truly wonderful experience!

A lovely hilltop village to visit perched on top of what looks like a mountain. The views are great. Lovely cathedral to visit in the centre with some quaint little bars and restaurants. There is also contemporary art gallery to visit housed in a church next to a very nice 4* hotel.

Pretty cool and scary. There are restraunts inside where you can eat over the cliff!

Nestled in the heart of Cuenca, the Museo de la Semana Santa de Cuenca is a captivating destination for anyone interested in the rich traditions of Holy Week. Opened in 2007, this museum spans two floors filled with evocative dark galleries that recreate the solemn atmosphere of the city's famous processions. Visitors can explore over 150 collections showcasing stunning artworks, including pieces by Marco Perez and intricate representations of Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary.
(Translated by Google) It is a free museum. With projection of a video, sculptures, paintings, objects, etc. Highly recommended to visit. (Translated by Google) The Holy Week celebrations in Cuenca are beautifully presented, with some pieces displayed in museum-like settings, information on its most important sculptors, and glimpses into its history and curiosities. The exhibit is enhanced with subtitled videos and concludes with interactive touchscreens that are particularly appealing to children. Even those who aren't particularly involved in religious brotherhoods will find it a valuable introduction to the world of Holy Week in Cuenca. Highly recommended. Congratulations to the organizers for their hard work and this achievement, and to the entire city of Cuenca. Incluso al que no sea muy cofrade le sirve para conocer el mundo de la Semana Santa conquense. Muy recomendable. Enhorabuena al esfuerzo que han hecho los promotores por el logro conseguido. Museums
Cuenca Cathedral is a magnificent structure featuring stunning stained glass windows and intricate ceilings. Visitors can enjoy audio tours and regular concerts at this grand cathedral. Nearby, the iconic Hanging Houses are a must-see attraction, with three of them open to the public. For breathtaking views of these houses, visitors can cross the iron footbridge of Puente de San Pablo.
Great cathedral with beautiful gothic interior! The coloured glass on windows are very special, never seen anything with style like this. Going on the roof is also highly recommended. The museum is nice too.

Wow wow wow, I have never been in a Cathedral that has given me so much joy. I love stained glass so this was an absolute revelation. the stained glass in this cathedral is nothing short of spectacular. the original plain glass windows were replaced by the most spectacular modernist stained glass that elevated this cathedral into something quite exceptional. They also had an exhibition go religious iconography that was simply breathtaking. this Cathedral is definitely a must visit if you are in the city
Andrew M — Google review
Amazing cathedral with many little side chapels all with a different history. You have to pay to get in but it's probably one of the most interesting cathedrals we've visited in Spain. Pay the extra 1.5 euros to climb the tower and get a balcony view into the cathedral and out into the square
Sarah G — Google review
The interior suprised me, the stained glass works of the cathedral were amazing and we could see many reflections inside! The ceilings are very cool pieces of artwork, and there are many details to see. Visited in October 2025, tickets were 5.50 euros for general public and 4.50 for carnet joven holders.
Bilge K — Google review
One of the most beautiful churches I have ever seen. The entry is 5 euros, which I think is totally worth it, and you can also pay 2 euros more to go up to the inside balcony, where you get an amazing view of the main square. For the experience and the amount of beautiful pictures you can take, it feels like a fair price. You can truly spend many hours here because each room has so much personality and makes you feel like you’re walking through a masterpiece. They also have an outside patio where you can see the famous hanging houses of Cuenca, the bridge, and even the statue of the Virgin Mary in the distance. The only downside is that when I tried to pay the 2 extra euros for the balcony, they didn’t accept card, so make sure to bring some cash with you. Also, the shops around the cathedral usually don’t accept card unless you spend at least 5 euros, which was a bit annoying. Other than that, it was an amazing experience, and honestly, if you’re in Madrid, the trip to Cuenca is completely worth it just for this cathedral.
Humberto D — Google review
Beyond spectacular. One of the most beautiful and special churches I have ever seen. Highly recommend, even with the small entrance fee. So worth it!

The brightest spot in Cuenca for me. Nice vies from the top to the Plaza Mayor and from the backyard to the mountains.
Natalya P — Google review
Iconic historic cathedral located by the Plaza Mayor of Cuenca. Rich in architecture, sculpture, and other religious arts. It offers a unique presence in the historic core sitting adjacent to the River Huecar side with rich views from its cloister gardens. The visit has good digital guide resources and offers a series of combined tickets. With time a full ticket is recommendable and gives access during two days to the main cathedral, going up through the facade triforio, entry to the cathedral museum, and nearby St. Thomas church and tower, which are also notable.

(Translated by Google) It can certainly be described as a "temple of art." A magical place where you can enjoy a beautiful display of the work of this great artist, fundamental to the development of new visual languages of the second half of the 20th century, both in Spain and internationally. The exhibition features highly varied productions, from what we might call his apprenticeship period to the most recent. Many works were made specifically for the beautiful chapel, as always at Torner, exquisitely considering the relationship between the work and its surroundings, the dialogue with the space, with the other objects surrounding it, and of course, with the architecture. The beautiful chapel plays a starring role in the exhibition. The staff provided exquisite (and very knowledgeable) service.

Parador de Cuenca is a formal hotel located in a 16th-century former monastery, nestled in the stunning Hoz del Huecar with its steep walls and lush vegetation on the outskirts of the city. The hotel offers traditional Manchego cuisine prepared by Chef Miguel Martinez at the Restaurante Parador de Cuenca.
It was an amazing stay at Parador de Cuenca. The room was great, the place is peaceful and quiet. Very enjoyable breakfast with amazing selection, and I recommend when booking to pick the option with breakfast included. One evening after lots of walking we didn’t feel like going out for dinner and instead we stayed at the hotel and went to the bar that is beautiful and had cheese and wine and it was perfect. One great advantage of the Parador is that it is located next to the Puente de San Pablo that crosses the river Huecar and at the other end is the old town and cathedral. Super convenient! The bus lines 1 and 2 stop by the plaza Mayor in front of the cathedral so it is easy from the hotel to walk over and catch one of the buses.

This is a premium hotel in a stunning location. Rooms are classic style, clean and spacious but a little dated (which is the style). The location is unbeatable right by the old town and castle, over a short bridge. Walks being already halfway up the hill, walks are accessible for most. The catering in the hotel is excellent, as is consistent with the whole area. Service in the restaurants is excellent and attentive. I believe this hotel offers great value and service. Recommended.

Great location, superb beds. Unhelpful front desk staff Sunday afternoon check in. Repeatedly told taxis would not access Barrios del castillo due to festival being on. This was not the case, should I have taken this adviced and not trusted my instinct to investigate further our overnight stay in cuenca would have been ruined. Laundry returned still wet. Overall really wasn't what we were expecting. Bar staff very efficient. First impressions are everything and the 2 gentlemen at front desk on Sunday afternoon were neither helpful or polite. Restaurante Raff San Pedro is an elegant dining establishment located in the historic center of Cuenca. Housed in a converted wine cellar that was once part of a 300-year-old palace, this restaurant offers a unique and charming atmosphere. The cuisine, led by chef Jose Ignacio Herraiz, focuses on reviving traditional recipes with a contemporary twist while prioritizing locally sourced seasonal ingredients from the surrounding areas.
Restaurant Raff San Pedro is a great place. We arrived late, however, they were able to accommodate us and let us have a bottle of wine and some cheese along with their incredible homemade bread. We had a great conversation with the waitress and shared our travels with her. Overall it was an incredible experience. I highly recommend this restaurant

Got a reservation on short notice (could have even walked in, one table was not occupied) Got the arguably worst table on the restaurant - maybe because of the short notice. Everything else was nice - very good food, excellent wine list, reasonable prices for what it is

we were in Cuenca for our Thirtieth Anniversary so wanted to have a nice meal in a good restaurant. After doing some research we decided to book here and book the Menu Degustation with Wine. We arrived and were greeted by the the staff and shown to our table. the restaurant itself if lovely being built into the cellars of a house. the staff were lovely offering to speak in either Spanish or English. The food was simply. wonderful with an explanation of what you were eating and where it came from. also the wines that accompanied each course were wonderful and matched to food perfectly. We had such a lovely experience and it really rounded off a perfect day for us. Thank you to all the staff who made this experience memorable. Highly recommended.

Excellent restaurant in the heart of the Old town in Cuenca. We stumbled upon this quite randomly, and decided to go with the set menu which was reasonably priced. It ended up being a very fun and tasty activity as we kept looking forward to what was next. Every food item on the set menu was excellent, unique tastes and dishes. I'd highly recommend, and would likely visit again if ever at Cuenca again!

If you're seeking a culinary adventure that strays from traditional fare, look no further than Restaurante Olea Comedor. Nestled in the heart of Cuenca, this charming eatery boasts a serene atmosphere and minimalist decor that allows the food to take center stage. The menu may be concise, but each dish is crafted with care and creativity, offering an exciting blend of Asian-Western fusion flavors that are sure to delight your palate.
What. A. FIND! Kind and courteous bilingual staff. Chill atmosphere. Each plate was completely different than the one before. Everything was spectacularly prepared. Super interesting and reasonably priced wine list. The portions were more generous than the typical Michelin recommendations. Authentic and interesting local cuisine. Will definitely return and recommend to anyone who finds themselves in Cuenca.

Amazing fusion restaurant in Cuenca. Great service, I think a starter and main is more than enough to feel full. We took tuna tartar, chop suye, lomitos and meat and it was delicious. Also cous cous desert is interesting, they have great vine choses and super interesting seaweed tea as appetizer. Must visit, book in advance

I looked for a nice restaurant with a Bib gourmand and found Olea Comedor. When i was there, the staff don't know about their Bib gourmand status...quit bizar. Anyway, the food was excellent. Specially the cow cheek was super super tender.. I love that meet so much, and this was really one of the best ever. The atmosphere was not my favorite... Screaming children, people using their telephones load. But the interior was very nice, with the green colored chains on the walls.

Wow!!! Just wow!! This restaurant is phenomenal! If you're looking for a break from the typical Spanish flavors in the area, this is the place to go. While the menu is small, the flavors are BIG BIG BIG! The services was also impeccable! The woman who served us was full of smiles and patience explaining menu items to us. We had three dishes, the tuna tartare, chop suey, and a pork plate. All were truly amazing and distinct. The tuna tartare was fresh and packed with flavor. The chop suey was not at all traditional and made with zucchini noodles, but came in a creamy delicate sauce. Finally the last, the thinly sliced pork dish was rich and nutty. The Asian influence is readily apparent, but we loved how they created new flavors in the fusion. Finally my husband order the chocolate ice cream. It had broken cone chunks on top and a shot of Bailey's they poured over once at the table. It became almost like a cereal! But a very delicious adult version. We can't recommend this restaurant enough! Be open minded, don't expect traditional Spanish flavors, and you'll love it. Expand that palette!

Food was excellent, and the staff very friendly, patient and helpful. Must absolutely try the papadas with hierbabuena, peanuts and teriyaki sauce. The leche merenguada dessert was exquisite (and disappeared within seconds in our bellies). I want to come back to Cuenca just to eat here again.

We have never experienced anything quite like Olea. The combinations, attention to detail, quality of the service were exquisite and truly sublime. The presa ibérico literally melted and created a sensation on our pallet quite like no other. We also ordered the causa limeña and OMG. This chef is quite literally a wizard with his abilities to combine what could be deemed unusual items, that just create the perfect dish, each and every time. We salute you !!! We were blown away and will be returning to experience this ‘out of this world’ restaurant as soon as we can.

This small restaurant in Cuenca is one of the most well-known and recommended if you want to make a stop while visiting the city to eat or dinner something typical and of high quality. Note that being very popular it's worth reserving a table and although they have an extensive menu, we recommend opting for lamb or pork, which are the specialty of the house.
Best eat in Cuenca! Asador de San Antonio is where the locals eat. The place serves great menu del dia and off the carta dishes. If you are in a food trip vibe, try their cordero lechal! Also never hesitate to ask some wine suggestions, they do have a good bodega of wines. Price: €€ Menu: Great

A restaurant with a chef who dares to explore flavors. Unfortunately, his intentions do not always pay off culinary. The Roca brothers or Feran Adria or even Maxikot in Riga have mastered this art.
