Westport

Westport is a town on the edge of an Atlantic inlet, on Ireland’s west coast. In the Georgian town centre, stone bridges link the tree-lined promenade on the banks of the Carrowbeg River. Rockfleet Castle and Burrishoole Abbey, both to the northwest, have ties to the 16th-century pirate queen, Grace O’ Malley. The Great Western Greenway bike and pedestrian trail runs from Westport to Achill Island, in the northwest.

Westport House is a historic Georgian-era estate located in County Mayo. The property features well-preserved period rooms, lush gardens, an aviary, a mini-railway, and a picturesque lake with pedalos. Additionally, the Westport Town Hall Theatre has been recently renovated and now offers modern facilities for up to 225 guests. The estate has a rich history dating back to the ownership of Grace O'Malley, the Pirate Queen of Connacht in the 1500s.
We had an engagement photoshoot!! wonderful place. Lots of flowers, very well-kept surroundings, free parking. The palace is definitely worth visiting, because inside you can hear many interesting stories and see ancient life.

Fantastic house undergoing restoration at the end of the Summer 25 season. The guided talk is well worth it, giving a good background to all the characters and the history. You can just turn up and self guide round the 3 floors, but they allow you time to explore for yourself both before and after the talk as well.

Westport House is a beautiful country house with an extremely interesting history. Guide Fionn is excellent when it comes to present its former owners and introduce you to the special rooms of the house. You should also stroll through the garden. Would highly recommend a visit (house might be under renovation for two years from now on!)

Just happened upon a tour and the ladies in the building were incredible. I had a question about an Ice House building and they went out of their way to get me an answer. Breda, Delores and Catherine are nuggets Thank you for a terrific tour and your kindness

This is not a hotel. This house was built in the 1600s and remained in the family until the 1960s and then saved the house from destruction by allowing the public to visit. The family history is fascinating and well worth the visit. It is surrounded by 300 acres of woodlands on the edge of Westport, a beautiful town. 😍

A nice place for a family outing. The house and it's dungeons are nice and provide a look into the life of the affluent in the olden days. The activities on the estate seem to be nice. One thing to note is that till the end of June, there are no activities (Westport house adventure) open to the public on weekdays. Access to public for the activities part of the estate is only on weekends during school term time. During the summer school holidays, it's open all days of the week.

Our initial room was too small but they immediately moved us to a more spacious one, we were very happy! Great hotel, beautiful and the reception ladies were very helpful. Easy access to the lovely main Street and town. Great pubs and delicious food!! 🍀

Wonderful view into a historic family private home. It's being renovated at the moment but it's amazing to see the house and it's rooms full of history. Really enjoyed it. Expect to be there for about an hour. You can take a tour or look around yourself.

It hosts various events, including music performances and speaking engagements. Additionally, the theater features a bar upstairs where guests can enjoy drinks and relax. Great way to get an introduction to the town of Westport! A little history overview here and there but more focused on the community efforts such as pollinator gardens, local honey and local business cross collaboration/highlighting local businesses which was fun to hear about. Our guide Steven was very friendly and patient with our 5 year old daughter, getting her lots of treats from the various shops. Highly recommend!
Michelle C — Google review
The guide, Ed and his Irish Wolfhound Coo was excellent. He was able to give us all lots of information about the foundation of the town and of the famous and infamous characters who contributed to the growth of the town. Some tasty morsels from ice-cream and coffee houses was a tasty addition to the walking tour.

Steven was wonderful! He explained everything about Westport and showed us the landmarks. It was a great day. He was very funny which added to a beautiful town in Ireland. It’s definitely worth the visit. I highly recommend this walking tour. I also recommend arriving early if you are parking.

Pub
Nestled in the charming town of Westport, Matt Molloy's Pub stands out as a beacon of Irish culture and music. This iconic establishment is not just famous for its lively atmosphere but also for its deep-rooted connection to traditional Irish music, thanks to its owner, Matt Molloy, who is a celebrated flutist from the renowned band The Chieftains. Visitors can enjoy an authentic experience here with cozy surroundings that create the perfect backdrop for live performances.
One of the best pubs I've visited in Ireland. World-class musicians flock here every day of the week and drop in on trad sessions hosted by one of the world's most influential musicians of all time, Matt Malloy. Craic is amazing, pints are some of the best pours in Ireland. Tourists mingle with locals alike in a warm and friendly public house. Younger crowd in the back and music was also top tier playing originals and covers. All lead to an evening I'll never forget
Kevin W — Google review
We came for the nightly session but didn't know they don't start till around 21.00. glad we got there about 19.30 so we got a seat next to the musician corner but people in there were so rude. Talking through when clearly says in that area it's for listening and people taking photos and videos up close with flash on - not cool. Then others complained it was busy - cause what you came for so did everyone else. So absolutely recommend for live traditional session music but don't come if you want to ignore that and want to talk to your mates and don't like crowds. If you get trad music sessions then this is the place in Westport! Drinks were the best price compared to others on the main road. I am uploading videos that were taken without flash as it should! Also please don't come in and sit at the musician corner at 20.45 and then be annoyed that you have to move - there are signs and the musicians don't rock up till after 21.00(I went on a Monday)

Got to sing “Northwest Passage” here with the band. My girlfriend then also played the fiddle alongside them. Never felt more proud to be Canadian and it happened all the way in Ireland.

Went for a pint around 7pm, and had such a great time with many conversations we ended up staying till music started at 930. Stayed til 11:30. Good pints and atmosphere. Great crowd of locals and tourists.

Fantastic from start to finish! Best meal we’ve had in a long time. Come hungry as you’ll want to savour every course! Service was outstanding. This will be a very hard meal to top!

Had booked a table for 2 in the evening and had a great experience, wide variety of starters, mains and desserts all of which sounded amazing with an extensive drinks menu to compliment. All front of house was attentive, relaxed, professional and charming. The chefs know what they are doing without a doubt, wonderful detailed food with little wait time!! Have eaten in most restaurants in Westport and this is the first to make us feel like we were on holiday again in our own town. Will be back!!

Food, service & setting were all top notch. For a group of 11, we were seated upstairs in our own room which was perfect. Our total bill came to just over 900e. Everyone was delighted with their food & the wine was tasty too. The downstairs seems to seat smaller groups but upstairs is perfect for a group of 10-12.

A great gem of a restaurant tucked down a back alley. We had a really wonderful meal — I had the lobster salad and then the seared scallops and my husband had the duck; all were delicious and perfectly prepared. The service was friendly and efficient (but we never felt rushed). Would also recommend the caramelized lemon tart!

Cafe
This Must Be The Place is a charming cafe located at the junction of High Street in Westport, known for serving some of the best coffee in town. The small kitchen prepares a unique breakfast and lunch menu using locally sourced, seasonal ingredients. The cafe offers an extensive selection of hot drinks to accommodate various dietary needs, including special drinks like matcha espressos and beetroot lattes.
I'm a big fan of coffee shops, and this one had been on my list to visit — and I absolutely loved it 🩷 The girls were super friendly, and everything my boyfriend and I ordered was so delicious. The coffee was amazing, the apple cake was exquisite, and I forgot to take a photo of my sandwich — which was also really tasty. We were both very satisfied with everything. We'll definitely come back to try more from the menu ✨️ This place is now officially on my list of favorite spots!

This mustn't be the place. It's changed. I've been here a few times over the years and it's usually been a great vibe with happy staff. Today, I thought I'd treat myself to a rare bought coffee to support local businesses, and the woman serving me was clearly having a bad day at best, and it felt very much like she couldn't care less whether she sold another coffee in her life. Barely even spoke to me. I hope it was just a bad day and that she had a better day tomorrow. At least the coffee was quite nice for the price. But as someone who doesn't get to go out and connect wtlith people very often it was a pretty disappointing experience.

Great spot. Friendly staff. Central. Lovely selection of homemade cakes & pastries. What's not to like...!

Had this ham and cheese toastie. It was okay. Overpriced over 10 euros, but that's Westport for you. I think it missed like a homemade sauce. Unfortunately. The coffee was great. Esp the matcha. The staff was wonderful and very friendly. The food menu was right above me, so I had to stand up and look at it. Which it kinda awkward... I would go back again and try something else in the future.

Was in with mum, coffee was gorgeous!! Immediately when you enter out of the rain, the cafe's vibe was warm, cosy and super relaxing and always appreciated the attention to detail at every corner! The perfect spot for lunch or coffee in Westport.

Excellent food. The French onion soup was sublime. The special was a lamb kebab and it was exceptionally nice! Coffee was sublime and we were provided with top service. I will visit this café every time I'm in Westport.

My favorite cafe in Westport! The food, baked goods by the renowned local baker Anne, and the coffee can’t be beat. The service is super friendly and efficient. I highly recommend the poached eggs with wild mushrooms served on incredibly delicious brown bread. The berry crumbles are the best I have ever had. The brownies are pure decadence.

Irish restaurant
Sage Restaurant in Westport is a top choice for contemporary cuisine, offering excellent food and a warm, kid-friendly atmosphere. Guests highly recommend the ribeye steak and stuffed chicken dishes, along with the blackcurrant and lemon tiramisu. The restaurant's attention to detail includes extra touches like sorbet palate cleansers, treacle bread, after-dinner shots, and chocolate brownie bites.
We went to Sage on December 27 and we’re so impressed with the meal. We had an incredible Beef Cheek and Striploin steak. When we got back to California, we made our own version of beef cheek and loved it thanks for the inspiration. This is a great restaurant. It was cold out and the temperature is perfect inside. The service was amazing!

You will feel at home, but with an awesome kitchen. The hosts are kind, friendly and love to give you all the information you want. Besides the lovely food, they have a banger of a wine list! Please try the Slovenian wine.

We had a really great meal while on our honeymoon in Westport recently. The menu is varied and very intriguing, with a great selection of vegetarian options which can be hard to come by in Ireland. The dishes were superb, with my particular favourite being the cod main course. The bread, sorbet and petits fours were lovely touches, and the staff were so friendly. Cannot recommend this place enough.

Absolute creative and best fresh food I’ve had in Ireland 🇮🇪 100% recommend.
Kaja B — Google review
My daughter and I visited Sage late April and I can't stop thinking about what a great experience it was. She is vegetarian and they had great options for her. Everything we ordered was delicious. The surprise relish tray and palette cleansing sorbet and sweet nibble after desert were nice unexpected treats. The wine selection was nice, our waiter helped us pick one that we both enjoyed. I am looking forward to returning!

Had an amazing meal in Sage. We hadn’t been in so long and surprised to see change of ownership. We were not disappointed. Food is still excellent. All 4 in our party went off the daily specials board. Food was exceptional. The seafood platter and fish cake starters were excellent. Good selection of wines also. When in Westport it’s a must go!!
Kieran K — Google review
Gem of a restaurant in Westport. One thing that was missing from most of the reviews I read, and something that makes this place even more of a special find is that it a family run business, and despite that they have been there for 12 years, it still has that family feeling to it. My dinner was exceptional. I started with the local kilarny oysters which were garnished with caviar. Easy to eat and nicely presented. For the main I went with the seafood linguine, which more than scratched my itch for a pasta meal while still being able to enjoy the local seafood. All in all, this is a must if you stop by Westport. I hope my journeys take me back again so I can explore more of their menu.

Italian restaurant
La Bella Vita is a top choice for Italian cuisine in Westport, offering authentic dishes made with seasonal ingredients. The bistro-style restaurant provides a warm atmosphere and excellent service. Visitors can enjoy simple yet delicious options like meatball with pasta and fresh mussels. The staff are known for their exceptional care, especially when accommodating families with children, even without a dedicated kids' menu. Located slightly up hilly High Street, La Bella Vita ensures an enjoyable dining experience for both adults and kids alike.
Wow what an amazing atmosphere and Ezio the owner and waiter has the most beautiful presence. The chef cooks amazing authentic Italian food 🇮🇹 We had the most amazing dining experience. This is a must in Westport and you will just want to come back again. I can’t wait to come back to Westport just for this restaurant alone!!

Cannot recommend this place more. I had the nicest experience with Ezio here. I had enquired if they did any gluten free options, and he went above and beyond to make me feel really cared for during the whole dining experience. They could offer the majority of the menu as gluten free and he was so incredibly sweet, going through the whole menu with me. Cannot recommend this place more. Beautiful food, really gorgeous restaurant - the atmosphere, the decor, the staff, all 10/10. Bravo Ezio! 👏 xx
Emmie L — Google review
Life is Good and Enzio will treat you well. Sicilian born came over her to fill Irish bellies with good old fashioned food. The food, service and atmosphere was fantastic. Hubby was a little upset I didn't try an actual Italian dish, but that was my fault really. As I was seduced by the 17oz Tbone steak. Very tasty and huge. A real treat which I enjoyed thoroughly. Wifey had a better idea, when in Rome, you try the Ravioli with slow braised meat. Damn hubby was jealous... I dream of the carbonara or the meat balls or even the seafood plates. Wifey ravioli was so smooth with creamy tomato sauce. Absolutely delicious. Either way Hubby and Wifey highly recommend visiting. Sadly tucked away in plain sight so you must keep an eye out and eat here. The only negative is the place only accepts cash. Not a major issue, but in this day an age it's hard to remember to actually bring money. Of course cash machines are nearby... But worth it. The other slight negative is that the restaurant is built in an old Irish home. As I visited the gents, a few of the ceilings and narrow hallways weren't designed the taller man. Enzio is such a character. Friendly and wants to make a good impression. From taking the time to talk and pronounce his name for you, spelling it out. Wifey really like him. As he prepared a small wine tasting to make sure she order the right bottle for her. Her new favorite person. Afterwards... Completey stuffed. We had to try the tiramisu. Alcohol free, but still packed with flavours. Out of all Italian restaurants out of Castlebar and Westport this place rates in our top three. The food here is great and we will be back. Will have to come very hungry so we have have a lot of dishes.

Stopped in and the owner / manager (maybe?) was very rude and not kid friendly. Pretentious is probably the best word to describe him. Definitely not welcoming or warm as you would expect from fine restaurants across Ireland. We left before things went any further and were welcomed across the street at an even nicer restaurant, Sage.

Friends Bistro, located in Westport, is a cozy spot offering Irish dishes with an international twist. The bistro has received accolades such as the Tripadvisor Travellers' Choice Awards 2022. Visitors praise the restaurant for its interesting twists on Irish classics and traditional dishes like quiches and casseroles. Guests have commended the exceptional service and delicious meals, with some considering it the finest dining experience they've had in a long time.
We experienced a lovely evening and dining experience. Our food was delicious and the presentation was spot on. Service was exceptional. Our only disappointment is that we are travelers and not here to enjoy the food and friendly staff on a regular basis. The fusion of French and Portuguese dishes made a menu of can’t miss choices. If we make it back to Westport this will be must do again.

Stopped in here for dinner on a Monday night. We ordered two appetizers and an entree for the 3 of us to share. The mussels were very good. My son did not share the calamari so I assume it was good. The duck breast was also tasty with the fig sauce and mashed potatoes. The best part was the strawberry pavlova. Oh! They also gave us complementary bread and hummus which was delightful.
Nichelle S — Google review
Great atmosphere, very delicious food. We got the duck leg, duck breast, fried chicken and pappardelle pasta. All were amazing, they even remade the orange sauce for the duck leg for me, because of an allergen. We got a free bread and hummus for starter and a complimentary jelly after the desert and coffee. Got some great recommendations of wine for our mains. Had a really lovely time altogether! Thanks to all and especially to George!

We stopped by Westport and on a whim tried Friends restaurant. We are so glad we did. It was some of the best food we've had in all of Ireland. Owner George is kind, genuine, friendly, and hilarious. He treats everyone in the restaurant like a good friend. While waiting for our order, we heard several customers telling George compliments about how the steak was some of the best they ever had, or that their meals were absolutely fantastic. Once we got our food, we immediately understood why. Delicious food, top-notch hospitality, and good vibes all around. Thank you for a wonderful culinary experience!

I travel a lot for work, all over the UK, Ireland and the rest of the world on occasion. So I get to sample a lot of great restaurants. The meal my mother and I had here was by far the finest meal I have had in a very long time. Half the price and twice as good, both in the food itself and the wonderful service as a great meal we had in Dublin. Perfectly pitched. Highly recommended to foodies. We even considered going back the following night but travel plans meant this wasn't possible. Will be back! The owner of the restaurant made it extra special, after a discussion about a particular chickpea and parsley fritta that sounded delicious he popped off and made us some to sample for free! Above and beyond. They were melt in your mouth spectacular!

JJ O'Malleys is a unique establishment located at the top of Bridge St. in Westport, offering both a traditional bar with live music and pub grub, as well as an upstairs restaurant with an eclectic menu. The olde-world interior creates a cozy atmosphere that sets it apart from other dining spots in the area.
J.J. O'Malley's in Westport is a fantastic spot! On the ground floor, there's a lively bar where they have live music almost every day, creating a great atmosphere. Upstairs, the restaurant serves absolutely stunning food. The starters were wonderful, and I was honestly amazed by the curry — and that's coming from someone who usually doesn’t like curry! It was so flavorful that I even enjoyed the dish my daughter ordered. The crab pasta was good too, though I felt it could use a bit more seasoning. Big compliments to the chef — you can really tell they know what they're doing in the kitchen. The only downside was that we were initially charged for an extra starter we didn’t order. Thankfully, after bringing it to the staff’s attention, the bill was corrected promptly. I highly recommend making a reservation, especially during the tourist season, as the place gets quite busy!

Great pub/restaurant in Westport. The location is super nice, very characteristic. Staff is very nice and welcoming. Service is fast, we didn't wait long before our food arrived. Dishes were very well cooked and quality of the food was great. We were very satisfied with our dinner and price were reasonable.

What a spot! Visited with my brother and his wife mid September. We booked in for dinner in the upstairs area. When we arrived the place was all a buzz. There was a live band playing. We went upstairs for our food. We were seated in booth style seating. But instead of being squashed in on banquette seating, we were sat on regular comfortable chairs at a nice wide table and there was plenty of room for everyone. The food was amazing. Everything was so delicious and presented beautifully. We shared three starters between us, then had our own mains. For starters we had a terrine(can't remember what kind, but was excellent), scallops on black pudding(perfectly cooked scallops, delicious) and prawns in a mouth watering chilli sauce(this was the star of the show). We asked for a spoon to finish the chilli sauce. Then for mains I had a huge pot of muscles and the others both had fish pie. My muscles where very plentiful and delicious. The others throughly enjoy their pies. Oh we also had a side of parmesan fries, yum yum. The staff were very attentive and efficient. Big shout out to Elisha amazing. We were too full for sweet so headed down stairs for drinks and to listen to the music. Fantastic night.

Lovely restaurant in Westport. Staff were nice though very busy! Low light, classic moody pub atmosphere. Classic Irish / pub music. Nice lighting and decor made it even better atmosphere. Food was very good - kids menu had mac n cheese for our 5yr old. We had chicken burger and tuna melt- both very good. Beer tasty as usual. Highly recommend.

The pub has a very good atmosphere, it’s very well decorated with lot of character and had live music on the ground floor. Then we booked for diner on the 2nd floor. Food was very tasty and not too expensive taking into consideration that was fresh fish. I had the seafood pie and was really good. Highly recommended.

Excellent food, we didn’t have to wait long and it was reasonably priced. The staff were wonderful, very friendly and welcoming. Lovely authentic Irish pub/restaurant. I definitely recommend calling in for a drink and abit of food.

Food was good and plentiful but man is it filling!! Barely had any of my Sheppard pie but the mussels were excellent. Don't order the fries as they come in gigantic portions!!

One of our favorite meals in Ireland! Staff was super friendly, and the food was absolutely delicious! We sat upstairs so it was more dimly lit and private but the downstairs was more of your typical pub atmosphere.
