Limoges

Limoges is a city in southwest-central France. It’s known for its decorated porcelain, much of which is on display at the Musée National Adrien Dubouché. In the historic center, medieval timber-frame houses line Rue de la Boucherie. Set in the former Episcopal Palace, the Musée des Beaux-Arts showcases the history of the city's medieval enamel. The Gothic Cathédrale St-Étienne de Limoges took 6 centuries to complete.

Museums
The Musée national Adrien Dubouché is housed in an elegant 1800s building and boasts a collection of over 12,000 pieces of Limoges china. The museum showcases the history of ceramics from ancient times to the present day, with around 5,000 pieces on display. Visitors can trace the epic history of porcelain from the discovery of kaolin deposits in 1768 to its peak during the 19th century.
Easy to get to, great exhibits and big open clean spaces. This is a great museum. Doesn't feel stuffy and the exhibits are nearly all protected so you can even bring kids. Definitely filled with gorgeous objects I would come back and see again when next in Limoges. A must see when in the area.

A very large museum full of beautiful pottery and information about pottery making. Lockers are available to leave bags inside, lift, and stairs to all floors. Tickets are valid all day, the museum closes for lunch. The building itself is beautiful, too
Sue B — Google review
This is a really interesting museum, my only complaint is that it closed for lunch and we had to leave after a couple of hours, current opening hours are 10:00 -12:30 and 14:00 -17:45 every day but Tuesday. The first floor has an exhibition about the manufacture of porcelain and it's history, the second a historic collection of ceramics from around the world, the third floor a focus on Limoges ceramics from the C18th onwards. I have edited at Google's request the pictures I have posted. Please be warned that some ceramics contain images of women's breasts the may inflame passions.
Paul B — Google review
An excellent family visit. The museum holds vast collections organized in large amd very well organized way. I shall return as one visit is not enough to see all.
Danusia S — Google review
An extensive collection of ceramics in a peaceful and contemporary space. Spent a relaxing hour there one Saturday morning. Whilst it closes for lunch, the ticket allows readmission after lunch and plenty of eateries nearby so you can do the visit in two parts. Fully accessible with lifts and has a high quality gift shop. Recommend.
David S — Google review
Amazingly designed museum. I liked the proprietary font from ceramic as well as text plaques from ceramic tiles. Beautiful collection and very pleasant personnel. A bit unusual that museum makes a break at midday which hardly allows to look at all items in one go so you stay "attached" to museum.
A — Google review
If you like ceramics, I don’t think you’re going to be more excited about any place else. So many pieces it was hard to appreciate everything. If you really wanted to take a detailed look at everything they had I imagine you could easily spend four hours there. Staff was incredibly nice. I didn’t expect to enjoy a ceramics museum as much as I did.
Christopher C — Google review
Very kind staff. I didn't speak French and they were helpful and accommodating. The museum is beautiful inside. Very modern. They had cool water inside for drinking. Elevators at each end of the building made all the floors accessible. There was sooo much pottery and porcelain. A magnificent collection. I'm glad I made the trip.

Cathedral
Sights & Landmarks
The Cathédrale Saint-Étienne de Limoges, situated in the heart of Limoges, France, is a remarkable Gothic cathedral that showcases stunning architecture and rich history. Construction began in the 13th century and continued for six centuries, resulting in an imposing structure with intricate details and decorative elements that reflect exceptional craftsmanship. Inside, visitors can marvel at the impressive rose window, crypt, and ornate bell tower.
Beautiful cathedral with stunning architecture and intricate details. The little garden nearby is lovely for a peaceful walk. A wonderful place to visit.
Michael S — Google review
Wonderful cathedral in Limoges. Huge and beautiful. You can also have a walk by the streets for some shopping, and visit the restaurants surrounding the place.
Nahil K — Google review
Limoges has an impressive cathedral but since we had just visited Bourges it doesn’t compare. It is grand enough and the highlight of visiting Limoges. We went in the evening just before closing at 6pm. The evening light certainly reflects off the cathedral and it is softer than during the middle of the day. It is also quieter if you go later in the day as we didn’t see many people even though it is peak summer holiday season. You get nice views from the gardens as well.
Simon R — Google review
Another beautiful French cathedral. The outside view isn't great, but inside it's really nice.
Luis G — Google review
Found some charming details in the building
Lu L — Google review
Very large and impressive cathedral. Absolutely spectacular on the outside. Shame that the inside had a lot of building work going on so I couldn't see all the beautiful architecture.
Coralie P — Google review
One of the most beautiful cathedrals internally in France with lovely chapels, murals and ornate columns. For me the highlights are the magnificent stained glass windows. Best to go early in the morning when it is quieter and you have more time to carefully look at each chapel. An absolute must to visit if you're in Limoges. Outside is a lovely botanic garden which is very calm and serene.

Lovely place and area older part of the city and worth a stop. Great food hall also in town.

Jardin botanique de l'Evêché is a stunning terraced botanical garden in Limoges, France. Spanning over five hectares on the steep right bank of the Vienne, it offers breathtaking views and a peaceful retreat. With over 1200 plants, including exotic species, the garden is arranged by theme, featuring plants for food coloring, medicinal use, traditional trades, and more.
Wonderful views of the cathedral and gardens, overlooking the city of Limogue.
Tl C — Google review
On the way back to the Netherlands we visited the city of Limoges ant took a scroll around the surroundings of the city, was not busy at all a bit to quiet to my liking and no good place to have a meal to my liking
Roberto J — Google review
Pleasant tiered garden next to the cathedral. Visited in the evening when it was cooler as there is a lot of stone paths around.
Simon R — Google review
Since I live nearby, I come here quite often. Everything around here is very clean, green and well-maintained. There are never large crowds of people here. There is enough space for everyone. In the heat it is very pleasant to take shelter in the shade of the trees. There is a wonderful parking lot. All the main attractions are nearby. There are also bars and restaurants in case you get hungry. The river with the promenade is at the foot of the cathedral.
Alexey P — Google review
Nice place. Only some parts of the park seemed deserted.
Aistė D — Google review
Small but amazing botanical garden. Lots of small plant organized by family and well labeled. You can tell there are dedicated people working there. Thanks you. Stunning views too as it sits up on a hill. Great place to go for a walk or take the kids out. And it's free.
Aya C — Google review
Very nice gardens. A little scruffy probably given the extensive size of the gardens and the maintenance that must be required. We visited in August! Would recommend if in Limoges
James S — Google review
This is a pleasant place for a walk, or sit down and watch time go by. It is nicely laid out with some interesting plants I had not seen before. One side is the old town wall and this gives a good view out across Limogues.

History Museums
The Musée de la Résistance in Limoges, France, is a significant attraction that offers an educational experience dedicated to preserving the history of the French Resistance during World War II. Housed in a former underground bunker, this museum showcases a collection of artifacts and documents related to the Maquis du Limoges, one of the largest groups of French Resistance fighters.
Very interesting. All displays are in French. Google translate is required. English audio guide available for 2 Euros.
Zechariah J — Google review
A must visit museum when in Limoges. Very informative about the occupation and liberation of France including vast information about the local resistance. All text in French but I used the English audio so not a problem. The various items on display are very impressive including weapons and an aeroplane! Highly recommended.
Terry F — Google review
It is such an interesting and poignant museum. Lots of information and photographs both of Limoges and France during the war years. Stair and lift access to all floors and useful lockers to put bulky backpacks in while visiting.
Sue B — Google review
Absolutely the best and biggest Resistance museum I have ever visited. Just 2 minutes from the Cathedral and old town. There are outstanding maps, images, objects, and propaganda posters very carefully curated to show different periods of France at War. The comments in the reviews are true there is a lot in dense French text here. And the audio narrative in English is weak. However there is enough information, and incredible images, well themed to take you through the different phases and regional political forces and groups through the war. The relentless propaganda under occupation is striking. The images of sabotage, capture, transport, imprisonment, and liberation very powerful. It brings home the day to day of life in Vichy France. No person, no community, no area of France was unaffected. Limoges itself was liberated by the FFI not the Allies. Other local towns were liberated by the Maquis. I could have spent much longer here and I will certainly try to come back.
Emma N — Google review
Really worth a visit, all the displays are in French so either buy a translated tour, use an app which translates into English or wish you had paid more attention in French lessons when you were at school! Some very emotional displays to be seen.
Simon F — Google review
This was a very interesting visit and the electronic guided tour was very detailed. There were not many artifacts to view but many photographs and plenty of historic details. I felt slightly overloaded with information by the time we finished. That said, we learned quite a lot about France's role in WW2.
Steve F — Google review
Very interesting little museum. Lots of information on the French resistances help during the war
Alex W — Google review
An interesting museum made better by Google translate which makes the boards readable in English. The audio guide is ok. The whole place is a bit old fashioned but gives a new ( to me) perspective on the second world war from the French people who lived through it.

The Église Saint-Michel-des-Lions in Limoges, France is a must-see attraction. This 14th-century gothic-style church is renowned for its twin square towers and intricately carved stone facade. Visitors can admire the exquisite stained glass windows dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries, depicting religious scenes. Located in the Quartier Historique du Chateau, it stands guard with two Gallo-Roman stone lions at its door.
A very beautiful church, second only to the magnificent Cathedral St-Etienne. Dominated by a tall bell tower. Inside are magnificent stained glass windows in beautiful condition as well as many bas-reliefs which are also outstanding. Well-worth visiting.
Alan P — Google review
This wonderful church is filled with relics from early French saint, including St. Martial, St. Loup and St. Valerie. It’s so sad how there’s no apparent local faithful visiting today, as this church is a testament to the Christian faithful over centuries of France’s history.
Michael B — Google review
Beautiful, late Gothic church (14th ton16th century) located in the heart of Limoges, the capital of the Haute Vienne department in the greater Limousin region.
Dom E — Google review
Really worth visiting. It is quite unique and offers coolness from the summer heat and calm from the busy city center. Looking at the internal pillars you can wonder how this building is still standing with so much distorsion. Some ancient relics are on display ( press the button to light them up). All in all a nice place to be.

Restaurant
Located in the heart of Limoges since 2006, La Table du Couvent offers traditional cuisine with a focus on local Limousin flavors. The menu features a large selection of Limousin meat dishes prepared with fresh, local ingredients. The restaurant is housed in a renovated convent building and boasts an outdoor courtyard for al fresco dining.
Wonderful experience. Delicious meat dishes and very professional and friendly staff. We definitely will go there again.
Philip D — Google review
Went for lunch without prior booking (and a lot of hope) and got very lucky to get a table for a party of 2. Absolutely great experience, from the service to the atmosphere of the place: a 13th century convent, with a fire place in the Sacristy dating back from the 16th century where your meat is grilled. Price are frankly fair for the quality, super fresh and local ingredients, and cooked to the perfection. As a starter, we shared a place of local “Cèpes” (mushrooms) literally melting on our tongue. Then we moved on the main artifact: a 180gr heart of Limousine beef Rumsteak (for me) and Filet (for my companion). Once chosen, we could see the butcher make the raw meat tender before grilling it on the fireplace. We enjoyed it so so much, it was probably one of the most tender and perfectly cooked meat we ever ate. 10/10.

Just finished my dinner here. Everything was superb, amazing food with excellent quality and extremely accommodating staff. The design of the restaurant is extremely curated as well.
Georgia S — Google review
First time dining at this restaurant. The service was great, food was amazing.👍🏽 The meat was 💯delicious! The side dishes we ordered were the gratin dauphinois and seasonal veggies. Will definitely come back whenever we are in limoges.
Jo M — Google review
Very enjoyable to sit down there and eat, but the food didn't spin my head.
Mostafa F — Google review
Very good beef and attentive service. Price was very reasonable. Thank you for their good recommendations on the choice of wine which was perfect for the steaks.
Kaywah C — Google review
The food was perfect. Meat was good quality and served with some delicious potatoes gratin. Wine list was small but well curated. Chef definitely knew his stuff. Service was super uneven. The junior waiters were smart and helpful. The older guy who seemed to be the head waiter, was pretentious and very off putting. I dine in restaurants all over the world many times a week. I do not need a lecture about how things are done or not done in your country. Restaurant service is about making the customer happy, not educating them on what you think is the correct way to do something.
Allan H — Google review
It’s hard to parse. We ordered steak. Tried to order by color and the waiter refused to even go there. Then when asked how done medium is we were told “in France there is only rare, medium rare and medium”. I’ve eaten at more Michelin stars in France than the waiter has years, and this was news to me. We ordered medium. Some steaks were medium and others were medium well. The beef was fine but nothing special. Admittedly the server was very concerned our stakes were cooked ok. We just said yes. Then we waited over 20 minutes for the table to be cleared and even longer to be asked about dessert. Desserts were good. One of the servers had such bad body oder it overwhelmed the food when he walked by.

Le Versailles Last Brewery Erstwhile Au Coeur De Limoges is a renowned high-end Parisian brasserie-restaurant known for its luxurious and classic decor. The restaurant's popularity and excellent reputation stem from its commitment to preserving an old-fashioned style, offering a distinguished professional service, and serving perfectly prepared French brasserie specialties with respect to tradition.
With a company of 24 people is a considerable job. We did not wait long, vegetarians were taken into consideration. Service was swift and very friendly. I really enjoyed my salmon starter, Belgian "stoof" beef and nougat ice cream dessert.
John S — Google review
Busy on Sundays … because it’s one of the few restaurants open on Sundays. Front of house a bit chippy when my schoolboy French failed me … waiter fantastic… food… ok, very fast service… feels like they want the table back… no chance to have an olive before the starter arrived…. 5 minutes and main is there. 1 minute after finishing main the cheese arrives…. Calm it’s not…. Food a bit on the bland side to be honest…. It’s not bad, just not great…
Richard F — Google review
An upmarket restaurant with excellent service. Food was well presented slightly over cooked to my preference but would recommend.

Le Pont Saint Etienne is a charming restaurant located in a 13th-century home, offering classic locally sourced dishes and featuring a terrace for outdoor dining. Adjacent to the cathedral, visitors can enjoy the serene Jardins de l'Eveche with superb views of the river Vienne and the Pont Saint-Etienne. The venue also offers private event spaces across its three levels, five interior areas, and two terraces.
The restaurant has a few sections. Terrace at the bridge level. Inside also the bridge level. Garden at the back at the river level. We sat on the terrace and had view of the bridge. Food was great. We took main courses : Half duck breast and Beef filet. We ordered wine that was recommended for each dish. And it went superbly well. My husband was very happy with his beef dish and wine. My duck was a bit tough and over-cooked but the overall flavor of the dish was real good. For dessert, my husband took the Sable au citron which was lovely (a bit small). Prices were reasonable on medium scale. Service staff was working hard but the chief staff lady was a bit stiff. Nevertheless, we felt that this was the best meal of our 18 days trip through Europe. The atmosphere was just right. Food was served in good timing. Pont Saint Etienne is very charming as well as the river Vienne. It was a magic evening for us and we fell in love with Limoges this way. We recommend it for great food, wine and view.

Great staff , very engaging ! Clean ! Tasty food and absolutely worth the experience .
Khdj A — Google review
I was very excited to see vegan dishes on the menu. I have found dining out makes me anxious generally so I relaxed knowing the dishes I ordered was all meat and diary free. My dishes were innovative and daring. Some flavours clash individually and complement as a dish. Loved the rose meringue in my desert, the starter amazed me visually and the cold taste took me by surprise. Trio of carrots as part of my main was enjoyable. I kept reaching for my glass of wine they forgot to bring which really did spoil the experience. Yes the food was excellent inside your beautiful restaurant, my few minutes delay was actually the whole main meal. So the wine was out of place with my coffee. Please don't tell me it was only few minutes when it was at least 30. Review is true to my visit.
Lorraine J — Google review
Lovely setting and ambiance. The starter was a triumph but my main course of fish was a bit uninspired. The fish itself was well cooked but my vegetables were a mix of over and undercooked. What was pretty poor was the failure of our wine order to be delivered with the main course. The waiting staff disappeared as soon as the food was served so we were unable to notify someone our wine was missing.

An abundant meal surrounded in an authentic in a timbered setting. The traditional menu is diverse and will not disappoint even the hungriest guest as the plates are abundant. There are two items you cannot miss: 1. Ordering a digestive - you’ll be sipping in style with their “roly poly” glasses. 2. Be sure to engage in conversation with the “patron”, Stephanie! She’s delightful!

We sat outside on a warm autumn evening and were greeted by a friendly waiter who looked after us all evening. The ancient square with the beautiful buildings around us was a perfect setting. We had various degrees of the evening plat and a couple of bottles of a lovely dry white french wine and a bottle of sparkling water and the bill for 4 came to €190. We all enjoyed the food which was very tasty and well presented and very fresh with the steaks prepared perfectly. We will be back

Beautiful building both inside and out. There was definitely language barrier as we don’t speak much French and the waitress didn’t speak English (why should she, we were in France after all!). We used google translate to read the menu which was fine. The food we had (pulled beef burger, and calves liver) was absolutely delicious. Nice extra touches like free bread, small cider aperitif. Favourite meal of our time in Limoges.
