Kentwell Hall, located in Long Melford, is a magnificent red brick stately home with a rich history dating back over 500 years. The house has been carefully restored and retains its original Tudor essence. Visitors can explore the parkland, gardens, and farm on the property. Kentwell Hall is known for hosting historical re-enactments where participants dress in period attire and demonstrate life as it was during the Tudor era.
An absolute amazing day out. I have been a number of times to the Tudor events and you are truly transported back in time. The volunteers put on wonderful activities, from weaving to baking and medicinal plant uses. The costumes that they have made are outstanding and I love that they speak as they would have done in Tudor times. Thoroughly recommend for all ages.

Through the ages at Kentwell was a fantastic experience. It was a really relaxed day, those participating in the various recreations brought the house and garden to life. All played their characters brilliantly bring humour, realism and education to their roles. The gardens are so unusual and well kept with many unique things to see. Great for all ages with lots of participation. I can’t imagine anyone would be disappointed. A huge thank you to all involved in this wonderfully entertaining event!

Great place. I volunteer there. Lovely house with beautiful gardens and grounds. The place comes alive when they put on one of their events. If you can get to see everything in one visit you are a rare person. There is something for everyone. Wear sensible footwear. Oh and wonderful cakes in cafe

We wanted to spend a last few hours sightseeing before returning home from our 4 day break in Suffolk. Booking the tickets online in advance saved us a few pounds and was very easy to do. Kentwell was fabulous, we spent a very interesting and pleasant hour in the grounds including the Tudor Farm. We then visited the house and it was fantastic, a very interesting place to visit, a real treasure.

Stunning, largely original Elizabethan moated house. Much of the massive service area looks like it was vacated yesterday. The ovens, the open hearth, the massive copper (laundry tub) all ready to go. Plus all the murals in their rooms above - which the puritans must have missed. Just brilliant and I work as a guide at an open air museum in Sussex of same period so not easily impressed. Also it's very relaxed - not like the usual suspects

My family and I visited Kentwell Hall on a Sunday in June and had an enjoyable day out. We particularly liked the 'Pied Piper' topiary hedge and the camera obscura in the garden. The Tudor mansion has some amazing rooms, including a kitchen with an open fireplace, and a very ornate bathroom. We had a late lunch in the tearoom, which offered a reasonable selection of sandwiches and cakes. All things considered, we found Kentwell Hall to be a quirky and interesting place for a family day out, and couldn't understand why it wasn't busier.

Interesting historic moted manor house. Accessible to Historic Houses members. Gardens open from 11.00 and the house opens from 12.00 There's a good cafe and several out buildings to view. Nice gardens, and an notable topiary hedge depicting the Pied Piper of Hamelin with the children following behind. Don't miss the oldest part of the property, with an upstairs living room from the middle ages, dressed as though the occupants have just left the room without tidying up! The rooms in the main part of the house are really impressive and stylish, all be it in a style now past. We enjoyed our visit, thanks! 😎👍👍👍👍

Absolutely fantastic day. Tudor reenactment from 11.00 until 17.00. Grandkids loved it...and so did the Oldies. So much to see, do and interact with Tudor 'folk'. Dressed in period custom, they immerse themselves completely in their roles. Food and drink available too.

Lavenham Guildhall, also known as the Guildhall of Corpus Christi, is a stunning timber-framed building dating back to around 1530. It was once a meeting place for medieval guilds and now operates as a National Trust site. The town of Lavenham was prosperous during the early 16th century but saw a decline in its wool industry towards the end of the century due to various factors.
I recently visited Lavenham Hall, a National Trust property, and it was a fascinating experience. The hall, which is over 400 years old, is steeped in history and filled with a wide array of artefacts. Walking through the building, you can see various equipment from the past centuries, as it once served as a prison. This unique aspect adds a layer of intrigue to the visit. The hall itself is beautifully preserved, and the historical significance is palpable in every room. After exploring, I enjoyed a delightful break at the on-site café. The food and drinks were excellent, making it a perfect spot to relax and reflect on the visit. Overall, Lavenham Hall is a must-visit for history enthusiasts and anyone interested in exploring a well-preserved piece of the past. Highly recommended!

Fascinating Tudor building now housing museum showing history of this town which thrived on the woollen industry in Suffolk. The town still has an array of beautiful classic Tudor houses.

The most magical place I've been to. If you like your history this is the place for you. I just love how they have preserved so many places around here. The biggest bonus is that they are truly proud of being a British town who celebrate their country. Which is unfortunately becoming so very rare thanks to Starmer. What a wonderful place.
T — Google review
An interesting and informative place to visit giving a real sense of its history and its place in history. There is plenty to see, (the cellar is closed at the moment due to flooding), with lots of information boards explaining all the various rooms and their uses in days gone by. It is maybe not for younger children. The staff are helpful and friendly, the cafe is nice and serves hot and cold snacks and the usual selection of hot and cold beverages, again the staff are really nice. Toilets are fresh and clean, there is plenty of parking around the village just a short walk from the building.

The Guildhall was a very unique and interesting building full of quirky facts and features. Tom was an exceptional guide and truly brought the building to life, filling us in with loads of interesting facts and my partner and I both learnt a lot. Also, it's only a short drive to Melford Hall, another National Trust property, so you can tick off both in one day. Be sure to wander Lavenham as well, lots of very old unique buildings.
Time A — Google review
Wonderful displays and very informative. A real insight into the lives of the many people who have used this beautiful old building over the years. Great tea room, beautiful gardens and a nice little bookshop.

The Lavenham Guildhall is a Grade I listed, timber-framed building, that originally housed the Guild of Corpus Christi. Today, it is a local history museum run by the National Trust that tells the story of Lavenham's rise and fall as a prosperous wool town, its later uses as a workhouse and almshouse, and its role during WWII. Was closed on the day that we visited it.
Ger R — Google review
An interesting venue, well worth a visit. It details the history of Lavenham in general and the lives of the owners of the building in particular.

Suffolk Food Hall is a bustling market with a rustic charm, offering gourmet food and wine stalls as well as a chocolate shop. The award-winning farm shop and restaurant, The Cook House, is located here. Visitors can explore an artisan bakery, craft butchery, fishmonger take-away service, deli counter with cheese and homemade delights, cafe with indoor and outdoor seating, garden center, home department, and fresh greengrocer.
Fabulous location, great produce and a lovely environment. Cafe was lovely too. Brilliant selection of foods available in the farm shop including cheese, meat and deli counter.

Lovely for a short visit. Huge selection of yummy foods, country shop and plants. Not the cheapest of prices but a wonderful selection of foods you don’t find in a high street. Kids area with bouncy pillow, small tractor with slide and ice cream stand.
Natasha G — Google review
Came here for the day with my 2 children 10 and 12, they loved the bouncy pillow, and spent ages just having fun. We wandered around the deli and the homeware shop and it was still of beautiful things. We got an ice cream which was the best value I've cream I think I've ever had! Absolutely delicious... Massive scoop and only £3.50. A jolly lovely day out !

Fantastic shop in a scenic location beside the Orwell Bridge!! This is a real gem that we hadnt heard of before. We stopped to have a tasty sandwich and coffee before looking round the shop before picking up a few luxuries for us to take home. Would certainly come back again in the future

So many lovely food items. Might be a bit expensive, but I know I am buying fresh healthy foods. A gift shop, Ideal for Christmas presents for the family. We had a meal, which was delicious. Seating inside and out. A fresh fish stand, and garden centre. Plenty of parking. A lovely walk around the area, with wonderful views.
Sharlene — Google review
Lovely food at the restaurant. Good customer service. Nice views. Shops - nice, but of course all quite pricey as you'd expect nowadays.
Justyna K — Google review
Easily sign posted off of the main road. Plenty of parking. Toilets available. Children's play area. A seating area outside offering views of the bridge and water. You're able to sit outside and eat. Dogs are only allowed outside. Cafe available inside, plus a separate restaurant at the bottom. A small garden area, although very small. Some homeware too, but at top end prices. Quite nice, but quite pricey, even vs other farm shops I've visited. The queue to check out was horrendous with one person serving and a queue of 12 people.

Sights & Landmarks
Melford Hall, a historic Tudor manor house, holds a rich tapestry of stories and connections to the renowned children's author Beatrix Potter. Once graced by the presence of Queen Elizabeth I, this over five-century-old mansion boasts an interior that reflects the ebb and flow of fortunes, hosting illustrious visitors and enduring natural disasters. The Hyde Parker family's restoration efforts following a devastating fire in 1942 have preserved this cherished family home.
The house is full of interesting artifacts and well-informed staff are on-hand if you have any questions. We were given a ten minute contextualisation talk as we arrived (repeated throughout the day, I think) and this set the scene very well - it's very helpful, given the long history of the site. Well worth a visit!

Great day out with the family with some great weather. The gardens are not too big and have family games or enjoy with little once. Nice cafe with scones. There are national trust tours revealing some interesting stories about the house and the estate.
Petya I — Google review
Lovely cosy house, very knowledgeable volunteers, the present owners still live in one of the wings. Very nice tea room and cafe for snacks or lunch, good second hand book shop. We enjoyed our two hour visit.

Been to Melford Hall twice and each time I discover something new. It’s a beautiful home that is still owned by the family, but partially owned by the @nationaltrust. It has had many revamps due to fire and different owners, but it is a lovely intriguing building with ties to Queen Elizabeth the first and Beatrix Potter. My favourite room would be the Drawing room at Th e top of the sweeping staircase! Definitely worth a visit. The guides are a wealth of knowledge so asking them questions makes it more fun. Chris as well as he others are a wealth of knowledge, but don’t forget to ask if they are #sconeAsinGone. Oh, and the gardens are lovely too. I liked that they are wheel chair friendly downstairs and that you can actually borrow a scooter. It was also nice to see that they try to make it as inclusive as possible.
P_Addler — Google review
A love the scale of this place, it feels so intimate. There are some very sweet touches, like baskets of games for children, all around the grounds. Badminton and huge draughts game set up on the front lawn. We'll be back!

Another good day out at a national trust house. Good grounds easy to walk and an interesting Georgian house, with s strong connection to Beatrix Potter.
Barry B — Google review
Interesting visit to Melford Hall today. Steeped in history it goes back to the 16th century. Nice little cafe there also with outside tables and picnic area. Beatrix Potter wrote some of her books whilst staying there and they and they even have the original Jemima Puddle-Duck on display. Extensive grounds with pleasant walks, all in all a pleasant day out

History Museums
Gainsborough's House, located in Sudbury, Suffolk, is a charming museum dedicated to the life and works of the celebrated painter Thomas Gainsborough. Born in 1726 in this very house, which dates back to 1520, Gainsborough's childhood home has been transformed into a vibrant gallery showcasing his early portraiture and landscapes alongside later masterpieces.
We came down for the Remembrance Day Parade a bit early. We found that this was the hometown of Thomas Gainsborough. He painted landscapes and portraits during the 17th century. You would recognize him by his famous painting “The Blue Boy”. There was a reduced cost to £12 (~$15.50 USD) due to one of the galleries being closed. After getting your tickets, you can go up to the top floor which has a beautiful panoramic view or go to the left door to see a small gallery of his art. They have diagrams on paper of the art hanging if you want more details. They do this throughout the house which is great for a more in depth review on what you're seeing. To get to the house itself from the gallery, go out the door, through a garden and then into the door to the home. There are plenty of his paintings throughout the house. It was originally 2 medieval homes separated by an alley. It was converted into a split house of which you can see the medieval structure in some areas. There are 2 stories, but a lift is available if needed. There is a painting by Cedric Morris in one of the lower rooms. You also get a glimpse of the silk work done in Sudbury which it was also famous for. Attached to this is a cafe called ‘The Watering Place’ and a store that has 2 sections to it for souvenirs or other trinkets.
Daniel G — Google review
Went especially to see Masterpieces from Kenwood exhibition of Gainsborough paintings as well as paintings by contemporary French and British artists. Hung lower than at Kenwood with good lighting which meant you could see the impresive fine detail. Lovely new gallery with no windows. The cafe looks out over a charming sheltered garden where we enjoyed coffee and a delicious lunch. There is also an excellent catalogue accompanying the exhibition (which ends shortly).
Anne — Google review
Great museum, lovely, knowledgeable staff and volunteers, they were changing exhibitions when we went so can't review all of the space. It like art, are interested in local history, interior decore or just fancy doing something in Sudbury, this is a great place to go. Constable room is also excellent.
Evil E — Google review
A great museum with well curated contemporary exhibitions as well as the permanent exhibits on Gainsborough. Historic house as well which is beautifully preserved with interesting exhibits and a good print gallery showing contemporary work on the top floor. New building for the temporary exhibitions with interesting architecture. Nice cafe and garden too. Really worth a visit.
Amy S — Google review
The design of the new gallery has created a wonderful juxtaposition with the old regency house. There is currently an interesting Cedric Morris exhibition with both his better known flower paintings and lesser known landscapes. The smaller Gainsborough house is evocative with friendly staff. The cafe serves fantastic food and is clearly a destination for locals and the museum wraps around a lovely garden with a HUGE mulberry tree at its heart. My only niggle was the price of entry and the lack of concessions which makes it very expensive.
Alison M — Google review
Gainsborough’s House very interesting place to visit. Gainsborough's work is central but there are works from artists relevant to TG such as Joshua Reynolds, and Francis Hayman, and currently Cedric Morris. Featuring a permanent exhibition dedicated to the local silk industry the new visitor centre was an unexpected treat. The main gallery has green silk lined walls from a local company as a backdrop to some of Gainsborough’s finest works . The old house is wonderful and even has a studio set up as well as rooms set as they would have been used when he lived there. In every room there are is a book on a table explaining a bit about the room , but sadly only one room had a volunteer guide, ( main gallery ) - an elderly gentleman who was charming and gave us some interesting insights into the paintings on display. We visited the day after a temporary exhibition had closed, mid afternoon. There is a fantastic new visitor centre with views across Sudbury and a camera obscura subject to volunteer being there to operate it ( sadly not operated for our visit ). Allow around 2 hours for your visit. We parked in a nearby free car park , off street is available nearby. The garden is very pleasant and it is possible to sit and have refreshments there. Gift shop very good and postcards of the artworks were fairly priced. Standard Admission is £15 Under 18’s admission is free. There are lots of ways of saving money on admission, Historic Houses & Art Fund Members are free. National Rail discount etc. Check the website before visiting for more details. We had a really enjoyed visit , and highly recommend Gainsborough’s House to visit- especially if you enjoy historic buildings , art and new architecture ( the visitor centre has just won a RIBA award ).If you staying at any of the nearby villages such as Lavenham - it’s just 15 mins by car.

The Butt & Oyster is a popular pub located in a stunning waterfront location on the river Orwell in Suffolk. It offers a selection of Suffolk ales and global cuisine, with picturesque views of barges and swans. The rustic interior features bare oak floorboards and boating memorabilia, creating a cozy atmosphere described as a "smugglers retreat." Visitors can enjoy Adnams beers, home-cooked food, and wonderful aromas from the kitchen while taking in the scenic river views.
First time here, the staff were really helpful and professional. The food was excellent, we had four mains, all were very tasty, well presented, and good size portions. We would definitely visit again. The only minor issue is the parking, as the pub is clearly popular, the staff again were willing to help where they could.

Food was delicious, and there is some nice space to sit and chat. The food took extremely long to arrive, however once it did arrive, it was worth the wait. Well cooked, tasty and good portion sizes. The beef burger was a particular favourite

This was recommended to us by 2 separate people, so we gave it a go. Sunny summer morning had breakfast on the terrace. Lovely place to be and the breakfast was top notch. I wish I could come back of an evening as there was quite a selection of Adnams beer

Amazing place with great views & atmosphere, as well as some VERY nice food & great staff, but prices were a bit high (could have been due to what I got) and food took longer to arrive compared to other pubs that I have been to, but still, very nice place, 10/10

Beautiful location and excellent service, very busy but good atmosphere. The food was good, we had hummus and warm pittas to start which was excellent but my beef roast was quite chewy and hard to get though, the sides were excellent however.

A beautiful countryside pub in a stunning postcard worthy setting. Sit looking out to sea, and eat some good food! The burger was delicious and sides were great. My only gripe was the price, especially of the beer. but this isn’t an isolated issue, it’s all over Suffolk. Great service, great food, perfect! Last minute they managed to take 14 of us for Sunday Roast, all the staff were lovely, the food was really good, and the portions were great too. Highly recommended!

The paella the most tasteless one I ever tried. This was a rice with some prawn but nothing all about The Paella. It was basically rice without salt, seasoning and the typical flavour of a Paella. This dish also cost too expensive for what it is. This dish cost around 21£ for two people. I would prefer to pay a bit more but enjoying what I buy. It was totally disappointing, however the service was great. Sorry guys on this time for this rating. We were so excited as soon as we saw you had Paella on the menu.

Really nice Sunday lunch here today. The menu on a Sunday is small and that’s a good thing - Really bored of pages of descriptions of food when all you really want is a nice roast! There were vegan options but I plumped for the roast beef served with carrots, red cabbage, Yorkie, lovely gravy, roasties and cauli cheese. For pudding I had the sticky toffee one which was more of a date pudding than anything else but still OK and served with ice cream. All in all a lovely meal served in nice surroundings.

I really enjoyed the meal and drinks that I had at ‘The Greyhound’ along with my friends. Staff were friendly and the menu was interesting with a good variety of small plates (and some larger ones) on offer. Costs were reasonable for the quality of food. It’s a dog friendly place.

1. Start with entrance....not disabled friendly, extremely steep and difficult to access. 2. Staff..quite friendly but a cold atmosphere. Looked quite bored. 3. Food.... awful. Ordered a sharing platter of meat selection. Received a small wooden board suitable for 1 person not 2. Meat was cold *straight from fridge and hard. 1 gherkin cut in half. Dried out olives. What should have been extra virgin olive oil mixed with balsamic, was a tiny bowl oil (? EVO) no flavour at all. Bread obviously cooked from frozen so dry and hard. There was a really small piece of green (lettuce?) and small bowl of mayonnaise. Had asked for chips for 2. We received this. However chips were thick and some were not cooked in the centre. Had to ask for salt. Overall meal was awful. Complained and was given a "sorry . We will take chips off the bill". We rarely complain in restaurants but this should not have been served to customers. Appearance of inside restaurant was good, but there was no warming atmosphere at all. What a let down as we Had come to Lavenham for what should have been a lovely day but spoilt by food. Never again. Went somewhere else where we had lovely cake in nice friendly atmosphere with lovely staff.

Just had the best Sunday lunch in the area. The service was excellent, the food was cooked perfectly and the portions were beyond filling. The trio of meats was a real struggle to finish, partly due the the side order of cauliflower cheese which was super. Cauliflower cheese in many places is watery with not very much flavour. This was very good in consistency and flavour. All in all a great experience. We will be visiting again.

Stayed a night, lovely old beams in the room. Boutique hotel feel to the dining space. Spotlessly clean everywhere, young staff very efficient. Bar billiards too!!! Easter Sunday lunch roast was reasonably priced, vibrant, fresh and quality. We had beef, pork and I had the veggie wellington ( with pigs in blankets because I am not actually vegetarian!) Parsnips, carrots and red cabbage were lovely. Yorkshire pudding lovely. Roast potatoes crispy and properly roasted. Brilliant! The extra cauliflower cheese was massive and crispy on top 👌. MIL gave extra marks for your own gravy in a jug. Jam roll poly was a smidgen light on the jam... a small critique.... will return.

I booked the Anchor Inn for a lunch time meal for my wife's birthday whilst kids were at school, it was surprisingly busy. The food was great, but unfortunately wasn't hungry enough to order multiple courses! Parking available along the road, but also a large parking area before the bridge (a short walk). Look forward to visiting again at some point.

Went today for Mother’s Day Sunday Roast and we was extremely disappointed. We go here during the summer months as its views are lovely. We had 3 Roast dinners two beef and one pork belly. All three were very poor quality. Potatoes hard and beef very chewy. The pork was very hard and dry. The beef burger was dry and very poorly presented. The portion control needs to be looked at as it Varys table to table. Lastly being a dog owner I am all for dogs being in country pubs however allowing dogs to sit on chairs at tables inside i think it’s a little too far.

A great experience from the start. The staff were friendly and the service was faultless. We chose from the Sunday lunch menu. The food was excellent throughout and tableware spotless. The lit log burner gives a cosy, relaxed vibe. Will be recommending to my friends.

What a gorgeous venue and really enjoyed sitting outside in the sun looking over the river. The staff are lovely and friendly and the service , excellent.

Table booked for 1pm. Main dishes arrived at 2.30pm. Considering it was not busy for a Wednesday lunchtime this is an unacceptable wait. I suggest you get more kitchen staff if you want to remain a viable business. Service poor, food average. My husbands french fries were dry and hard, not cooked fresh in my opinion. Considering you had 1.5 hours to cook a fresh batch this is poor. Disappointed this visit so for that reason we won't return.

Visited on a Friday night for dinner. Good menu options including vegan options. Tofu 'fish' burger was really nice and a bit different from the normal 'beef' option. The cauliflower and gnocchi main was tasty but could have been enjoyed more if there was a bit more of it. Pub/bar area busy on a Friday night and fairly loud. Not an issue for us on the other side of the room but if you're visiting with people who are hard of hearing it might cause an issue. Perhaps it's quieter during the week. Doggy friendly and lovely seating outside next to the river. Staff very good. Food on time etc. No issues at all. Would go back and recommend.

The actual venue is beautiful, however, I ordered the burger which was served medium and due to kidney issues I was very sick. I wasn't asked my preference on cooking and if it said it on the menu I must have missed it. I stopped eating it when I noticed the pink and also it didn't taste very nice to me. However, my friend ordered the same and was very happy with it so maybe a me problem. The service was brilliant, everyone was very attentive. Log fire and decor was lovely. Would go again but avoid the burger lol. Beautiful desserts.
