Narbonne

Narbonne is a town in southern France on the Canal de la Robine. The Gothic Cathédrale Saint-Just et Saint-Pasteur was begun in the 13th century but never completed. The grand Palais des Archevêques (Archbishop's Palace) houses archaeology and art museums. The Horreum is an underground labyrinth of ancient warehouses left over from the town’s days as a Roman port. The nearby beach and harbor is at Narbonne Plage.

Canal de la Robine, a branch of the Canal du Midi, offers a charming setting for leisurely strolls and boat rides in Narbonne. The canal is lined with markets offering vintage dresses, clay bowls, and olive wood spoons. It's a serene and bohemian area perfect for enjoying the flowery town of Narbonne.

Owners of the Electric boats are delightful. Our issue is the state of the Canal. Sorry Monsieur Mayor you need to seriously get on and get it cleared its a complete disgrace. We paid to look at other people's rubbish.Impact on wildlife is à complete disaster . The electric boat owners clear what they can and said they are saddened by the rubbish. We visited Saturday 16 August. See attached photos.

Catholic cathedral
Sights & Landmarks
Narbonne Cathedral, a Gothic masterpiece built between 1272 and 1340, stands as a testament to the city's rich history. Although left unfinished, its impressive transept and soaring 40-meter choir, adorned with exquisite tapestries, are awe-inspiring. The cathedral boasts remarkable stained glass windows and ancient gravestones within its walls.
Narbonne Cathedral (Cathédrale Saint-Just-et-Saint-Pasteur) is, without a doubt, one of the most breathtaking cathedrals in the world. If you are visiting the south of France, this masterpiece of Gothic architecture is an absolute must-see! From the moment you lay eyes on its towering, unfinished walls, you can feel the weight of history and artistry that went into its construction. The cathedral was built in the 13th century and remains an incredible example of French Gothic design. Despite never being completed, its sheer scale and intricate details make it one of the most fascinating and beautiful religious sites in Europe. Stepping inside, the first thing that strikes you is the soaring height of the nave. The ribbed vaults and grand arches create a sense of awe that is hard to describe. The stained-glass windows are simply stunning, casting vibrant colors across the stone walls and filling the space with an ethereal glow. Each window tells a story, and if you take the time to admire them, you’ll discover scenes from biblical history brought to life

Though relatively modest in size, the Narbonne Cathedral (Cathédrale Saint-Just et Saint-Pasteur) leaves a lasting impression through its rich ornamentation and artistic treasures. Among its standout features are the exquisite gobelins—tapestries that add warmth and grandeur to the Gothic interior. The space, while not vast, feels intimate and regal, thanks to the abundance of decorative details and ecclesiastical jewels. It’s a hidden gem where scale is secondary to splendor.
Felipe B — Google review
Fantastic 13th and 14th century cathedral which is Narbonne's most prestigious monument and a major building in the Gothic style of southern France. Its construction was ordered in 1268 by Pope Clement IV, former Archbishop of Narbonne and advisor to Saint-Louis. It was dedicated to the young Spanish martyrs Justus and Pasteur. Its choir, the 5th highest in France, reaches over 41 m under the keystone, and the Gothic altarpiece (14th century) of the axial chapel is a masterpiece of European Gothic sculpture. The cathedral forms a unique ensemble with the Archbishops' Palace-Museum. It connects with the current city center, an essential place in Narbonne life where you can admire the 12th century Palais-Vieux building, the Madeleine keep built in the 13th century and connected by an arch spanning the Passage de l'Ancre to the Saint-Martial tower from the early 14th century. At the top of the south tower is the "Bourdon," a large bell weighing 5 tons. It was the only bell to escape melting during the revolutionary days of 1793. Around 4 p.m., the Saint-Just bourdon chimes its deep notes above the rooftops in memory of the plague epidemic that devastated the city in 1652. Despite various attempts, the nave of this cathedral was never completed; it was to extend for a hundred meters more. The cloister galleries are interesting as well to discover. On the upper floor of the Chapel of the Annunciation, in a brick-vaulted room, called "Chapter Room" features a square-shaped room covered by a brick dome that creates a curious acoustic phenomenon of sound propagation from one corner of the room to the other. Indeed, if you whisper in a corner facing the wall, you can be heard perfectly on the opposite side! The Treasury brings together pieces from the Carolingian period to the modern era: a 9th-century carved ivory Gospel plaque, an 11th-century Hispano-Moresque pyxis, the illuminated pontifical of Archbishop Pierre de la Jugie, the Flemish tapestry of the Creation circa 1500, as well as other exceptional liturgical objects that testify to the great wealth of the archbishops of Narbonne ! Finally, save your legs and your breath to climb the 162 steps of the magnificent spiral staircase. At 42 meters high, you will enjoy an exceptional view of the city of Narbonne, from the coast to the Pyrenees. The keep, one of the best preserved in the south of France, is a powerful square tower, at the corner of the Palais Neuf, built from 1295 to 1306 by Archbishop Gilles Aycelin, also an advisor to King Philip IV Le Bel. It consists of four rooms : the hemispherical room called Treasury room, the king's chamber and the defense room ...

Beautiful cathedral with lots to look at, and information in many languages available near the front of the church. We got tickets to the Treasury and we're not disappointed. On Saturday morning the organist was warming up and it was incredible, not sure if that is every Saturday morning, but to hear that organ was incredible.

Les Halles de Narbonne is a lively food market located in the heart of Narbonne, France. The market offers a sensory experience with its abundance of fresh produce, regional delicacies, and artisan goods. Visitors can explore stalls featuring local cheeses, meats, seafood, and more, reflecting the Mediterranean influence on the region's gastronomy.
The market is a delightful hub of local flavors, brimming with fresh, vibrant fruits and an array of artisanal cheeses. The vendors are exceptionally warm and welcoming, making the experience even more enjoyable. One of the best aspects is the opportunity to sample products before making a purchase, allowing you to discover unique tastes. Super great market full of locals. We came to Narbonne for the grand buffets and and spend some time here on the Sunday. The market has plenty of bars and is pleasantly not to crowded. The breakfast options are endless. Some locals have wine and cold meat platters and others cheese platters or croissants. Many come here to buy there bread and vegetables and then have food in one of the many bars. Absolutely recommended to have a wine with locals and practise a bit of french whilst test the local snacks and wines.

The Palais-Musée des Archevêques, also known as the Palais Vieux, is a remarkable building that dates back to the 1200s. With Gothic additions and a tower that offers stunning views of the town, it is a true architectural gem. The complex boasts an array of museums and activities to explore. While the old palais may occasionally be closed, visitors can still enjoy the incredible donjon tower.
A nice museum with lots of stairs. Be prepared to walk up and down a lot. You can buy a combined ticket to visit the defensive tower, the castle (it’s the museum) and a treasury in the cathedral. This museum has lots of porcelains which is untypical for such museums in my experience. Also there are lots of emblems with explanations of its meaning and origins which made me very happy as I’m a big fan of it. Next to the castle there are often temporary exhibitions.
Kirill M — Google review
The ticket for the museum includes the art gallery, the watchtower and the treasury in the cathedral. I feel this is a must for visitors. The watchtower gives impressive views and is accessible via a long spiral staircase. The art gallery has a variety of different styles art and ceramics. There is a section dedicated French art based North Africa themes. The Cathedral treasury also has some interesting pieces. On our visit there was a free exhibit accessed from the open courtyard of Marti Moreno's sculptures which we really enjoyed. There is also a beautiful sculpture of a woman with tattoos.

Very interesting visit in this former Archbishops' Palace, which along with the Gothic cloister and the Cathedral of Saint-Just and Saint-Pasteur, forms a unique monumental ensemble, both residence and fortress, like the Papal Palace in Avignon. Two towers flank the Palais Neuf and the neo-Gothic façade, designed by Viollet-le-Duc to house the Town Hall in 1845 : on one side, the imposing Gilles Aycelin Keep (late 13th century), and on the other, the smaller Saint Martial Tower (1347). The Passage de l'Ancre, whose name evokes the coastal rights collected by the archbishops, separates the Palais Neuf from the original Romanesque palace known as the Palais Vieux, currently closed for renovation, and connects to the cloister and the cathedral. This museum located in the Palais Neuf, designed between the 14th and 19th centuries, allows you discover the archbishops' former apartments and the very rich art collections. The exhibition features paintings from European schools from the 16th to the 19th centuries, a remarkable collection of 17th and 18th-century earthenware, furniture, and a large section of Orientalist paintings. The spaces and their decor are themselves sumptuous and well worth a visit: the painted ceilings of the great Audience Hall (1634), the King's Chamber (1632), and the Great Gallery (1851), as well as the Archbishops' Dining Room (18th century) and its plasterwork decorations dedicated to nature and hunting.

Beautiful place, filled with history, which offers a great vantage point of the city of Narbonne. Friendly staff, cheap entry… We didn’t stay very long so we didn’t see all it had to offers but there is plenty to see (sculptures, paintings, old faience, architecture). Well worth the visit!

Beautiful palace that once served as the residence of the archbishops of Narbonne. The palace is now a well-organized and very informative museum that showcases the history of the region. The building itself is stunning, with beautiful gardens and amazing architectural details. The admission fee is reasonable. This is definitely worth a visit if you are interested in history and architecture.
Roberto P — Google review
An excellent set of rooms to wander through. One housed louis 13 th at one point. There's an interesting story about that told in the room. Lots of art to see. I was particularly impressed by the exhibition on orientalism in French art. Some good views of the cathedral from the tower as well. Well worth all the stairs.
Jamie H — Google review
Certainly a "Must See" attraction in Narbonne. Tickets are 6 Euro and allow you to visit a number of room in the palace. A climb to the tower top is worth the 149 steps up the spiral staircase and the views out over Narbonne are great. My favourite was the actual Archbishop's residence which is now an art gallery. The rooms displaying the are are almost better than the art itself. ALso be sure to see the gargoyles guarding the garden.

Buffet restaurant
Les Grands Buffets is not just a restaurant, it's an extraordinary experience. This upscale buffet offers a wide array of traditional French dishes including foie gras, lobster cascade, rotisserie, and an impressive selection of 111 cheeses. The opulent setting adds to the allure, with baroque decor in the ceremonial tent, chic tables in the traditional brasserie, and the new Jean de la Fontaine dining room adorned with 18,000 gold leaves.
One of a kind experience! Truly recommended to have a taste of traditional French cuisine at an reasonable price. The number of dishes and variety are truly impressive. All are very well executed by the restaurant brigade. Drinks, including alcoholic beverages (wine, champagnes, etc.) are surprisingly affordable. Booking well ahead of time, several months before indeed, is mandatory. Still, and that was for us the only downside, the waiting time to get to your table is long and queueing under a glass dome (the restaurant is inside the municipal pool building) during summer without AC nor fans was particularly uncomfortable.
Nathan L — Google review
I've been a long-time patron of this restaurant, and it pains me to say that it's not what it used to be. Back in the day, this place was a gem. First off, the reservation process is a nightmare. You have to book months in advance, which is ridiculous. And even when you finally get a table, you're faced with long queues at the buffet. Speaking of the buffet, the food quality has noticeably declined. It's just not as good as it once was. What's most disappointing is that this place used to be smaller and more intimate. Now, it feels like a crowded, impersonal mess. It's a shame to see such a decline. Expensive for what it is. Disappointing. Photos taken at the end of the service.
Dominique D — Google review
Our friends booked us a special lunch here (months in advance), which was a lovely surprise. I'd been eyeing this place on YouTube last year and always wanted to visit. Though I'll admit, I somehow thought it was near Paris, not Narbonne. Let me be clear - you don't come here just for the food. It's about the whole experience which is totally ridiculous and fun. While it wasn't the best buffet food I've ever had, the showmanship and atmosphere really do make up for it. The wine list is very impressive and surprisingly well-priced. The cheese selection is genuinely out of this world. I ended up enjoying the foie gras degustation way too much. The fresh seafood was okay. A bit disappointed there was only one type of oyster. The lobster was fine, and the caviar (if you can call it that) wasn't particularly memorable. Everything here is OTT. They serve 600 covers for lunch, so there are queues for everything. It reminded me a bit of feeding time at the zoo, but the lines moved surprisingly fast. There are also different dining rooms which you can choose from. Our friends booked us in the Gold Room because it was quiet and intimate. If you can visit and are a foodie, you should try to visit. This area of France is really lovely with lots of great wine and regional produce to explore.
Chris C — Google review
The world's best buffet by far. You do need to book well in advance. All dishes are classic French and a true bucket list experience. Wines are super well priced and the options are excellent.

- welcoming staff - Large dish assortment - They have different varieties of all you can eat lobsters. - Large assortment of steaks. Most of them cooked at the moment. - The patés, cheese assortment and lobster were my favorite dishes. - Desserts are good. Skip the dense such as brownies. The best sweet part is the chocolate fountain with strawberries and pineapples and some chocolate tarts. - Avoid rushing. There is plenty of time to eat as much as you want and you’ll never run out of food. - Walk the entire buffet first and keep tiny portions.

The service and atmosphere was amazing, the food for the most part was also amazing. Some dishes were a miss and I wish they could cook the steak to order but I usually had it end up a bit undercooked which made it a bit chewier than I liked. Overall a good experience and worth a visit!

Place was definitely a great show in itself. From the grand entrance to the beautiful looking service area. Good: Definitely focus on the hot food entree area where you order your food. You can order as many as you want but you can only order one at a time. So make sure you know what you want. The roast beef and duck were very good and the stations were right next to the entree ordering area. The cheese selection was also very well positioned with many options. The foie gras included 9 different types. Very good but too rich in fat for your average Asian. Loved it but couldn’t have too much. The dessert station was so cool. I am not a big dessert person, but I enjoyed the place so much. Bad: I think the oysters were pretty good, but the rest of the cold seafood area was ok at best. I wouldn’t have minded skipping. The hams were also spotty. Some good, some have dried edges, meaning probably been sitting for a while. There were other basic hot food items but I would also skip. All in all, great experience for a great price. Focus on the entree station and skip the cold seafood if you can. You can also get lobster in the entree station so you don’t miss anything if you don’t go to the cold seafood section.

We arrived in Narbonne and decided to visit Les Grands Buffets. This restaurant usually requires booking six months in advance, but we were lucky enough to snag two last-minute spots. Claimed to be the world’s largest luxury French buffet, the restaurant is known for its extravagant décor and an unlimited selection of lobster, foie gras, truffle, caviar, cheeses, classic French dishes, and desserts. Our honest experience: • The layout was chaotic, with narrow service areas and long, crowded queues—definitely not a pleasant vibe. • The quality of ingredients was average; the seafood didn’t feel particularly fresh. • Hot seafood dishes were overcooked. • The desserts and ice cream, however, were quite good. • Staff were very friendly and welcoming. • Price: about €70 per person including drinks. Overall: It was an okay experience, but i wouldn’t recommend making a special trip just for it.

"Chez Lulu" is a retro-style bistro located in the old post office cafe, exuding a nostalgic charm with vintage objects and classic posters adorning its walls. It's a popular spot for locals, tourists, and passing artists in Narbonne. The chef, Alexandre aka Lulu, personally interacts with guests and shares the stories behind each dish on the menu. The homemade dishes are inspired by daily market finds and are known for their generous portions.
Wow what a meal. And here I thought French meals are small. I rarely don't finish my meals , well tonight was one of those nights. I never had mussels like this and the were just to die for. The pate was just massive. Like a brick. My wife's lamb was delicious and my pork which came with so many extras was just amazing and shame I just could not finish it.

The experience was a total disaster. The restaurant is extremely crowded and the service is snail slow. We arrived at 8:30pm to eat, and they took our order at around 9PM it took them 30 minutes just to take the order. Then the food took about an hour to arrive and nothing too special about it. The couscous is bland. The worst part is the noise levels inside. The restaurant feels like a night club but without the fun energy. It's full of screaming kids, screaming parents and loud overall. It was painful to hold a conversation without feeling like you couldn't hear the other party. Finally if you expect the restaurant to offer you containers and boxes to bring whatever food you won't be able to finish, forget about it. They will charge you one euro per box! An absolute scam. Avoid 100%

(Translated by Google) We came last night for a bite to eat and what a nice surprise! The service was impeccable, the lady was adorable, we feel that it is a friendly and warm place. As for the cuisine: exquisite. I recommend the tagine with apricots (we still think about it today because it was so good). And to round it all off, cakes and mint tea, also delicious. In short, to test! We'll come back. On reviendra.

Located in the lively Les Halles market, Chez Bebelle is a must-visit spot for meat lovers. Run by Gilles Belzons, also known as Bebelle, this place offers a unique dining experience with meats sourced directly from neighboring butchers. The atmosphere is festive and traditional, making it the perfect setting to enjoy classic dishes like grilled blood sausage. As an emblematic place steeped in rugby tradition, it's a popular spot for post-match gatherings.
Great place for eating meat. Nothing fancy, just plain amazing meat. And the service is great. As you can see in the videos, they get the meat from their own butchery, which is right next to them, by throwing it through the air as if it was a rugby ball. The owner played rugby in Argentina :) Totally worth the wait!

It was a unique experience, the restaurant is located in a market and there's some butchers around it. So, when you order a piece of meat, the owner (with a megaphone 📣) orders it to one of the butcher who's preparing it and throw it to the owner, who then, cooks it for you. It's really something to see and the food is so good!!! I recommend it 100%

Seeing the great reviews, we decided to have our lunch here. I have to be honest, I was disappointed. First the good points: the service was great, albeit a bit slow at times. But very friendly. The location is amazing and the prices are reasonable. Also, the fan made the heat very bearable. But that’s where it ends. The food was bland, the fries were an absolute disgrace (coming from a Belgium, maybe I’m biased, but they were still frozen inside and floppy!!), and the restaurant is massive so it takes a while for food to arrive. There are only 2 toilets for a lot of customers, so the entrance was clogged with people trying to go to the toilet. Fortunately there were some public toilets at the other side of the food hall, but it’s a shame we had to resort to that. Overall quite disappointing.

Great meal and lots of character. The former rugby player owner uses a megaphone from time to time to shout orders to the butcher across the passageway, who then tosses the wrapped meat over. His wife deftly manages the cooking and plate preparation. Busy, busy, but fun and you will leave satisfied and full. No vegan options here, for sure a meat and potatoes grill- fresh and nicely served.

I was in a queue with a small beer before being called 35 mins later. Good tasty steak but quite a lot of fat on mine. It ranged from thick to thin, so thin was medium as requested, but thick was rare. It’s well worth the experience but I wouldn’t do it again and maybe cross the road to the restaurant or try next door. It isn’t as good as the Le Relais de L’Entrocote and your clothes don’t stink. €32.30 total for entrecôte steak , a small beer, a glass of red wine and a single espresso is very good value. I noticed that a lot of workmen ( a good sign) were queuing at the next stall without the theatrics and their food looked good . I would try that next time maybe.

Meals are freshly prepared and Bebelle makes sure you're taken care of! Orders are shouted out on a megaphone to the butchers and thrown over to be cooked. Highly recommended!
