Onze Lieve Vrouwetoren, also known as Lange Jan, is a historic late-Gothic tower and the third tallest in the country. Constructed between 1450 and 1500, it offers guided tours with insightful details about its fascinating history. Climbing the 98-meter tower provides breathtaking city views but requires physical effort due to narrow stairways. English handouts are available for non-Dutch speakers, and questions are encouraged during the tour.
If you like the view the city and can climb 346 steps then it’s a perfect place for you. You’ll have a guided tour and you’ll be introduced with its history and some interesting facts. If you are visiting Amersfoort then it must be in your bucket list. Ticket price was around 10 Euro per person. I loved it and I hope you’ll too. Thanks for the amazing guiding tour teams.

I didn't get a chance to go inside, but this building has a towering presence over Amersfoort. You can see it from almost anywhere in the town. If you ever get lost, its easy to find your way back to it. Its regal and looks amazing during both day and night. Wish I could have done the tour.
Rasikanand H — Google review
An iconic landmark and true symbol of the city. While its interior is not particularly impressive, you can book tickets to reach the top and enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of the city. It's advisable to secure your tickets well in advance, as demand is very high
Nikolas H — Google review
If you’re visiting the city this has to be on your list. The history behind the tower is fascinating to say the least and the view form the top is super nice! Let it be noted it does take a lot of physical effort to climb and the stairway up is very narrow. So if you’re claustrophobic or not very stable on your feet this is not for you. Book online so you have a slot! If you don’t speak Dutch a English handout is given and you’re encouraged to ask as many questions as you’d like.
Greg I — Google review
A beautiful tower with a great view and rich history. I was visiting friends and we went on a tour up the tower. Even though the rest of the group was Dutch the guide gave me a summary of what he was saying in between. so nice! Climbing the tower definitely demands some level of fitness and stability, cause the steps are tiny and narrow. As a person with claustrophobia I was still able to go up - but I admit that it took some courage. Still highly recommend and to my fellow anxiety people: you can do it. Just take your time and maybe it helps to walk as the last or first person. There are also bigger floors in between to stop.

Excellent place to visit. Guide and staff were very good. Beautiful building structure with a beautiful history. Stunning views and lots of steps. Very enjoyable
Gerhard N — Google review
This is one of the most captivating tourist spots in the city of Amersfoort (in my view, it is the main attraction). The local guide is well-prepared, sharing loads of details and patiently answering all the tourists' questions. For those in good physical shape, and without health concerns (like heart/respiratory issues, or claustrophobia), climbing to the top of the tower is a breeze, especially with breaks on the intermediate floors. The price is quite reasonable — I'd even say that it's really cheap. The only downside is that some parts of the tower are not open to the public (i.e., the dungeon)
Catalin H — Google review
We weren’t able to go inside, but there’s a table inside where you can book on the spot. It’s a majestic and iconic place to take photos. Restaurants and pubs around too!

Koppelpoort, a medieval landmark crafted in the 14th and 15th centuries, is a picturesque gate that traverses both land and water. This well-preserved fortress emanates an enchanting fairytale vibe. It embodies the charm of Amersfoort, a city steeped in history. The gate's design is truly remarkable, and walking by its canals is an unforgettable experience.
The Koppelpoor medieval gate it's a well-preserved structure from the city's old defense wall. You can admire its impressive brickwork, towers, and the scenic surroundings along the canal 🏰✨
Chiara C — Google review
A lovely landmark. Benches around so if you get tired from walking, you could always sit down and admire the view or see people in their bicycles around.
Quincy Q — Google review
Must-see historical gem! The Koppelpoort is absolutely worth visiting - it’s the only combined land-water gate in the Netherlands and dates back to around 1425. Time your visit for summer and you might catch the cannon demonstrations by De Stadskanonniers - quite a spectacle! Fun fact: if you were caught drunk and fighting in medieval times, your punishment was operating the water gate mechanism, literally running like a rat in a wheel. This is where the Dutch term “raddraaier” (troublemaker) comes from! Beautiful medieval architecture, perfect for photos, and great for history buffs. Definitely add this to your Amersfoort itinerary!
Bram O — Google review
There is a lovely walk between the 2 gates.

I passed by and sat in the park nearby. As far as I know, there are NO tours here. But it's beautiful, so who cares? Take a bunch of pictures from the bridge. Come back at different times of the day and take the same pictures. Then decide which one you love best. Mine is late twilight.
Jenn ( — Google review
Very pretty. Too bad the Three Rings craft brewery had taken an unscheduled holiday when I visited. It would have been great to sit by the water and sip a beer.
Jonathan M — Google review
The main gate of the medieval city of Amersfoort is an impressive sight. Sadly, the access to the fortification's interior is restricted. I'm giving only three stars because the overall experience was marred by the unpleasant smell emanating from the dirty water.
Catalin H — Google review
An very nice an old entrance gate to the town. There are also tours for this, which explains the history. We walked around and enjoyed the great weather. It is a very good motive for fotos.

History Museums
Museum Flehite is a captivating local history museum located in the heart of Amersfoort, Netherlands. Housed in three medieval buildings, it offers a unique glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of the region. The museum features themed art and artifacts, along with engaging temporary exhibitions that cover various aspects of history and art. One notable permanent exhibition showcases eye-witness accounts from WWII, providing poignant insights into the past.
Very nice historical museum, the route was clear at most points and gets you past everything there. Especially nice was the miniature town depicting the town as it was a while ago, minus the random car and moped that were rather out of place. It's fun to see the different angles within the paintings throughout the museum that with the help of the miniature allows you to figure out where the painter was viewing the town from. Which makes it possible for you to go there yourself and see the difference; it's a great way for engagement even outside of the museum. Overall a very fun, historical experience that I can recommend.
Joost W — Google review
Unexpected great museum for museumkaart holders! Staff were helpful, and gave me a guide with descriptions of the rooms in english, as most text is written only in dutch. I liked it more than the mondriaanhuis, so I highly recommend it! It takes 45-60 min to visit.
Tyler W — Google review
It's ok but not that exciting or interesting. It's just nice for a visit if nothing better has come up and you took the boat tour that gives you 50% or have a Museumkaart.

Pretty nice museum. Had some great history about Amersfoort. Enjoyed some of the exhibitions and paintings very much, especially the exhibition about water.

I visited the museum in May, 2025, when a very substantial show of paintings by Wessel Huisman was presented across the entire museum. The building is gorgeous and well located. Huisman's work consists of a re-reading of Classical perspective laws through a modern sensitivity. I found the work beautiful, thought-provoking, and made with tremendous skill.
Pedro A — Google review
Although me and my gf only had about 45 minutes to explore the museum, we still found a lot of interesting things and it was a great experience, would like to come back later with more time to explore the museum!

All about Mathias Withoos, something new from me. The only problem was that there were no explanations in English only in Dutch. Thanks God,a visitor who was kind explained me about the family Withoos and their way of seeing the nature then in 17 th centery and later by Hans ,1962. Nature as an unit, life is ours only temporary, all you have today tomorrow could be dust,,,themes of painting. The video from the end it's interesting also,to see how technology today, can change the reality in art.

Muurhuizen is a historic street in Amersfoort that offers a glimpse into the city's past. Originally part of the city wall, it was repurposed around 1500 when the wall was dismantled to accommodate Amersfoort's expansion. The bricks from the wall were used to construct new houses along this circular street, creating a unique blend of old and new architecture.

Art gallery
Located in the charming city of Amersfoort, Netherlands, Kunsthal KAdE is a contemporary art museum housed in a modern building along the Eem River. The museum offers diverse exhibitions and installations showcasing modern art, architecture, and design. Situated just outside the medieval center, this area also features excellent dining options such as De Saffraan and Hoog Vuur. Additionally, visitors can explore the impressive architecture of the library Eemland nearby.
Museum for modern art temporal exhibitions. It is places in the new comercial part of Amersfoort which is easily accessible. I’ve seen the display of Mona Hatoum (British-Palestinian video artist, academic, sculptor and installation artist) called Inside Out. I really liked it, the purpose of her art is very obvious which makes it even more plausible. Very much recommended.

A splendid museum by the river Eem, in gorgeous Amersfoort city, Utrecht province. Amazing contemporary art with captivating themes, for young and old. A very modern section of the city at a short walk from the main station, as well as from the amazing, romantic old inner city.
Henk P — Google review
What I like about museums in the Netherlands is that they always have well thought out exhibitions. The museum also solved the problem that visitors are overwhelmed and exhausted by the overstimulation of art objects. In the case of Kade, it is just enough (two floors with sparsely located objects) to make an impression. This time it was the Mona Hatoum exhibition, works of whom are stuck in your memory with their symbolism. Absolutely recommended.
Dmitry K — Google review
The staff is so wonderful and helpful and the exhibition and accompanying booklet was great.

Nice little art gallery in the center of Amersfoort. Impressive art. We liked the location, building and exposition. We will come back sometime. We are museum card holders, so entry was included in the annual fee.
Fabian P — Google review
The place is beautiful, but to expose Mona Hatoum is more than a mistake, it’s totally foolish, almost a crime. She is the worst artist i’ve ever seen, making an exhibition lowering art to a literal transposition of simplistic views. It seems to use 3 words of vocabulary (world, soldier, pain), in a senseless, uninspired, poorly shaped, complaisant, pretentious posture. And it’s taking the place of artists deserving to be seen, actually working.
Gui D — Google review
Museum was okay. Unfortunately the exhibitions currently running were not for me. I’m sure it would fit well for some other people. But personally it wasn’t what I had expected. Location and building was decent and nice, pretty big and also nice staff.

Hete Kolen is a vibrant restaurant located in the heart of Amersfoort, offering a unique outdoor dining experience. The restaurant specializes in preparing classic BBQ dishes such as spare ribs and oil and vinegar chicken, along with delectable desserts. Described as a "stoere vlees- en barbecuekeuken," Hete Kolen prides itself on grilling, baking, smoking, and roasting meat and fish dishes with love, flavor, and attention to detail.
Everything is freshly made, even the peppermint at the end. It was a very nice experience. The staff is also very friendly, and the smores dessert was delicious. I definitely recommend pairing it with a cup of tea or coffee. It’s also possible to take your leftovers home if, like us, you accidentally order too much so nothing goes to waste!

This restaurant serves exceptionally delicious food, and the ordering process was very pleasant. The staff were incredibly cheerful, and their positive energy really brightened my experience. Out of the dozens of restaurants I’ve tried in the Netherlands, I would definitely rank this one among my top three. I highly recommend it—it’s absolutely worth a visit for everyone!

The food was absolutely delicious! My taste buds were very happy! Everything tasted fresh, the herbs really brought out the flavours, I could taste each element clearly in the dishes. Maud was incredibly kind and cheerful, making the experience even better. Excellent service 🤌🏾 I 100% recommend!

It is amazing! It was our first time, and it has been a great time. The food was really tasty, it is such an experience. The pork belly is a must, and the risotto which is new in the menu, nailed it. Moreover, the service is even better, each of them has a smile to offer, recommendations, explaining each dish with passion. Thanks to the chef Maria and to the waitress Jordy and Mikkel 🙏 you’re fantastic !!
Ainhoa C — Google review
8/10 Cozy atmosphere and awesome service, only the dishes keep it from being perfect. Pork belly was flawless, steaks were alright, but why would you serve huge vegan beet dish on a meat plate? The prawns were strange too. Also the price was €40 in the menu but they charged us €80 because we were two people, that was unexpected. Anyway, absolutely worth the visit.

A gem in Amersfoort, if you happen to be in town go ahead and book a table for dinner, you won’t regret it. The restaurant itself was beautifully decorated, the staff were attentive and friendly. I have eaten a lot of pork belly in my life so far but the pork belly i ordered from this establishment was delectable, melts in my mouth and is paired well with the wine i chose to drink. We also ordered the chicken, a bit sweet for my spouse but personally it was good for me. For dessert we recommend the salted caramel chocolate cake- it was not too sweet and if you are a fan of dark chocolate then it’s a must try. Also had rhum bubba, the cake is delicious and citrusy to my taste but a bit dry. We would love to visit again to try the ribs ♥️
Karla M — Google review
Great place, hidden gem! Excellent service, when I told the waiter my partner spoke English he immediately switched to his very best English the entire night! Locally sourced produce and delicious, quality dishes. Ordered a bottle of prosecco, was put neatly in a cooler on the table. The s'mores dessert was our favorite, so good! We'll be back soon.

De Saffraan is a unique restaurant located on an old clipper, which has been completely converted into a contemporary establishment with a beautiful rooftop terrace. It offers not only a breathtaking view but also culinary surprises. The kitchen is known for its creative dishes made with local and fresh ingredients.
De Saffraan in Amersfoort offers an unforgettable 6-course culinary journey. Chef masterfully crafts each dish with seasonal ingredients, resulting in a symphony of flavors and textures. The elegant ambiance and attentive service enhance the fine dining experience. An extensive wine list perfectly complements the exquisite cuisine. While pricey, De Saffraan delivers an exceptional experience for discerning palates. Book well in advance to secure your table at this culinary gem.

Stupidly expensive, but absolutely worth the experience. Food, service and atmosphere was extraordinary. What I especially appreciated was the fact that they made an entire menu especially for me due to a dietary restriction (which I communicated in advance). I also liked that you can easily spend an entire evening here; its not an 1.5 hour affair like in most restaurants. Here you are given time to truly appriciate and discuss each individual dish and accompanying wine, which makes the price far more reasonable.

Haute cuisine on a very decent refurbished cargo ship. Staff was extremely friendly, thanks to Monique Korteschiel for her heartly welcome. We went there spontaneously. Might not be the top spot eating out with children, but we felt very welcome and were treated very well. Food was extraordinary good, wine also. A place to come back definitely.

Brilliant! Loved the food, atmosphere and servicd. Everything was to prefection! De Saffraan deserves another Michelin star- for creating food like jewels on a plate and poweful flavor explosions in the mouth; for being able to re-experience everday local food in a new exciting way. Worth the price and perfect portions, enough for you to enjoy the dish and still be left with appetite for what is coming next. Would recommend to anyone who wants to pamper their palate and experience good food.

Modern French restaurant
Restaurant
Nestled along the picturesque banks of the Eem River, Merlot is a stylish and modern restaurant that promises an unforgettable dining experience. Housed in a beautifully restored building, this culinary gem showcases the talents of chefs Koen Kaldenbach and Michael van Manh Ho, who craft exquisite dishes rooted in French cuisine while incorporating flavors from various global influences.
Super nice experience! The staff was amazing and the food was also very delicious. Ordering the vegetarian meal was no problem and usually there is only cheese or egg dishes, but that was not the case at all! Definitely a recommendation from us! Next time even with vegan food 😉

Merlot 2023 MICHELIN Guide restaurant located in a restored building on the Grotte Kopel in Amersfoort. An upscale restaurant inspired by French cuisine, that serves everything, including a completely vegetarian menu by the riverside. Three sampler dishes to start off your gastronomic journey. The soft warmly toasted bread with honey butter is a must eat, some things simple but really delicious. Three delicious mains followed by one desert. All beautifully crafted and wonderful delicious. Artisan chocolate with coffee or tea to finish off the meal. Portion are small, and enough to feel 80% full. Wine lovers are in the right place as they have more than 100 types of wine. Excellent dinning place to chill and enjoy your evening.

Joy B — Google review
First we spent 1.5 hrs to be served 3 amouse. Then when we asked for the vegetarian menu we were told we weren't being considerate enough to the chefs. The arrogance! Then we spent 4 hours, 2 bottles of wine, and €250 (including a voucher) to get 4 courses through a 6 course ordeal of hunger. First 1 tiny portion of beautufully cooked food arrived, then at least 30 min later another tiny morsel arrived, and so on. The entire thing reminded me of the worst traits of 1990s nouvelle cuisine and arrogant "chef first" restaurant culture. Don't bother.
Daniel S — Google review
Everything was prefect except two main courses, they were suddenly very salty.
J J — Google review
We (2 adults) enjoyed the seven courses with accompanying wine arrangement. The maître'd was very knowledgeable about the wines, which were selected to accompany some very fine meals. Those meals were small in size, but very high in taste. Every meal had its own distinct flavour profile, making them stand out from the others. Even though they did not fill us up, there was plenty of good bread with caramelized butter to fill in the gaps. Merlot is a bit expensive, but still a very good price for the entire experience. If you are able to stomach the bill, I would surely recommend a visit.

⚠️Good to know about this restaurant: Better to reserve & located in the historical city center of Amersfoort 🥘 The food quality is really good! 🍽️ They offer different food options in both small and normal sizes. However, the price for the normal size is almost double, while the quantity isn't that much more. 🍛 You'll probably need at least 2 normal-sized dishes with sides to feel full. 👍 Friendly and fast service!

Great place to relax. No pressure. Great view. Many good quality bites with specific flavours, non standard food to share. Free water and bread. Kids like it too. You could be here also with couple of friends. Sometimes, when crowded, you share a table. I prefer outside.
Wouter B — Google review
I am very surprised that no one mentions at the reviews that the menu says “shared food” and then says “at least for two people” , which means “too much food for one”, prices available, but when the times comes for paying… the shared food price is per person. No sane person writes down the price for shared meals and then charges double… either write “food for two people 64e” or write “price per person”…. It’s quite shocking having to pay double of what you thought you’d pay. Some people cannot afford that, you know. I really felt being scammed. Half of the food plates are tasty, half are not seasoned well. Stuff is nice and friendly.

I was here with my friends for dinner. Firstly the ambience was the best here. We had two Chef special platter. The food was average, nothing great or you crave for. In the plater we had some prawns, chicken and coconut curry based dish. There was some sesame bread as starters with a special dip (which was the best among the food). Their fish salad was also nice. I didn't enjoy the food much here, maybe because of the cusine.
