Llanes

Llanes is a municipality of northern Spain, west of Bilbao. It’s known for its rugged coastline, framed by the long limestone Sierra del Cuera ridge. The port town of Llanes is home to the medieval castellated El Torreón, the Gothic Santa María del Conceyu church and the modernist Llanes Casino building. Paseo San Pedro is a grassy clifftop promenade with crescent-shaped Sablón Beach at its eastern end.

Located on the breakwater of the port in Llanes, Spain, Los Cubos de la Memoria is a striking art installation by sculptor Agustin Ibarrola. These massive concrete blocks are adorned with vibrant colors and designs that change with the tide and light, creating an ever-evolving mosaic. Considered one of Spain's most significant public art pieces, this landmark offers a unique blend of artistic expression and coastal protection.
Fab views and nice place to stroll along.

The beautiful city of Llanes in the province of Asturias Spain 🇪🇸 the port with the painted “cubos de la memoria” enjoying the nice weather and scenery of the port
Roberto J — Google review
Nice scenery and some nice artwork on the cubic wave breakers. The artwork on the cubes of the outer open waters have started to fade away, but the ones in the bay are still relatively well maintained. Honestly nothing much to see other than the cubes. But there is a nice backdrop of the main cliffs of the mainland shores toward the end of this breakwater.

Great idea and beautiful view of the town

The town of Llanes sports the Cubos de la Memoria to protect its harbor from the open ocean. They reminded us of piles of bright presents in 2008 when they were apparently covered in fresher paint. Llanes offers a stopover along the Camino de Santiago del Norte or "por la Costa" along the north coast of Spain.

Churches & Cathedrals
The Basílica de Santa María del Concejo in Llanes, Asturias, is a stunning example of Gothic architecture dating back to the 12th century. It was completed in the 15th century and features an exquisite altar from Italy showcasing early Renaissance sculptures. This free-to-enter basilica is a rare gem of Gothic design in Asturias, with its construction commissioned by the city of Llanes and declared as a basilica in 1973.
Beautiful church . Façade with bougainvilleas

This church was built at the end of the 19th century right next to the Covadonga cave. If you plan to visit Covadonga, there are three main places to explore: the cave, the lakes (absolutely beautiful scenery), and this church.

Nestled in the charming town of Llanes, the Paseo de San Pedro serves as a delightful gateway to explore the region's rich history and stunning coastal scenery. This scenic walkway stretches along rugged cliffs, offering breathtaking views of the Cantabrian Sea and inviting visitors to breathe in the fresh ocean air. Starting from Playa del Sablon, it connects seamlessly with other picturesque spots like Celorio.
This is something different! A place to find peace and happiness. When the sky is clear you can almost see the south coast of England. We can wave to Mr Bongo in Brighton. Creation is the nation. This sidewalk makes you calm after a day of working or studying. Muy bonito! Thanks for a place like this.

Capilla de Santa María de la Magdalena is a small church located in the medieval area of the city. It offers decent views of the port of Llanes and is situated in a cozy and quiet square. The hermitage is worth visiting, as its door is usually open for visitors to peek inside through a fence. Despite its small size, it's considered pretty and not crowded with people.

Restaurant
Chigre El Antoju Sidrería is a popular spot in the center of Llanes, known for offering affordable yet high-quality Asturian cuisine. The restaurant is small, so it's best to avoid peak hours to dodge the crowds. It's famous for its typical local dishes like cachopo, fabada asturiana, and matured beef steak. The portions are generous, with the cachopo XXL being a standout dish meant for sharing.
If you want to try a proper cachopo this is 100% the place to go. There are probably several places that can offer you the same but this one has quality and quantity certified in their food. The portion of the cachopo is huge and you can eat 2 XXL sized ones for around 4 people. As a plus they have an amazing technique to serve sidra. Would recommend it anyone if you are willing to wait some time to either get a table or get the food served.

Stumbled across this place last night. Took a ticket for a reservation half an hour later. So glad we did. Service was great and food was even more so. Got chatting to two Spanish ladies who explained the menu and gave us top tips. Very, very good.
Carole H — Google review
Cachopo XXL is fantastic - don't attempt to eat it yourself - we barely finished it between two. Service was friendly even though they were busy. Hard to get a table, we got there 20 minutes before it opened and there was a large line before it did. But it was a public holiday, so might have been busier than usual.

Very popular place so turn up early or be prepared to get a ticket and wait for a table (you can get a drink if you're thirsty while you wait outside for a table). Nice vibe in the restaurant which is small and cosy. Food is fine but nothing to write home about.

Asturian restaurant
Restaurante Casa Poli is a charming 19th-century farmhouse serving traditional Asturian sausages, bean stew, and seafood. The restaurant's popularity is evident from the long lines that form before its 13:30 opening time. Once inside, guests are greeted by kind servers and can enjoy the spacious patio and three dining rooms.
Order the cachopo. There are few meals in my life that will stay with me for a long time but that cachopo will be ingrained into my memory for years. The restaurant is tucked away in a small little town requiring some skilled driving to arrive. But the adventure through the narrow streets is well worth the treasure that is Casa Poli.

Fantastic hidden gem. Great for fish and meat. I loved the relaxed atmosphere and how attentive the waiters were. Be aware that you can't book in advance, this place operates first comes, first served. I suggest to arrive around 13:00 so you don't have to wait too long for your table.

Amazing food, best croquetas in a long time, awesome steak and zamburriñas, glad I ordered bread to dip in the sauce 😋, cheesecake from another world.
Alberto V — Google review
Worth a visit if you’re within 30kms. They open at 13:30 but make sure to be there at 13:15 latest as there’s a huge line and only the first 30-40 or so get in for the first round. Once inside it’s a beautiful typical house with a patio and 3 dining rooms. Very kind servers, and specifically Fran. The food portions are big and you can see the quality of the product. We’ve had a fabada, anchoas (really tender) and croquetas de centollo, plus arroz con leche as a desert. The fabada is really good and everyone was ordering cachopo so probably it’s worth trying it. Price was 45 including a couple of wine glasses, two water bottles and coffee. Try it!
Borja A — Google review
If you are visiting this beautiful part of Spain a meal at Casa Poli is a must. Local dishes, local produce. Luis, the chef goes daily to the nearby port town of Llanes to buy fresh fish just off the boats. Classic Asturian dishes such as fabada and cachopo are homemade as are the desserts. Good selection of local cheeses, chorizo, salchichón. Various wines to suit all budgets and of course, Asturian cider, poured in the traditional way - from a great height. I first dined here in 1996 just after Casa Poli opened. The quality of the food and service hasn't changed in nearly 30 years in this family owned and operated restaurant. Competitive prices. Only open at lunchtimes. Reservations a must on weekends, holiday periods. Recommended dishes: Merluza a la sidra (hake in cider), fabada, cachopo, fresh fish of the day, chorizo a la sidra, steaks, - actually order anything on the menu - it will be good.

Absolutely delicious, perfect charming surroundings and helpful friendly staff. The mechanics from Llanes Motor recommended me to eat here, and I am more than satisfied! 😍

After a walk, we arrived at Casa Poli just after 1:00 PM. It was immediately busy, but after about 15 minutes we were able to get in. Inside, it was already very busy and cozy. We were seated upstairs and had a truly delicious meal. A local recommendation. You really have to know where to find it as a foreigner. The local Spaniards, in particular, know how to find this place, which also shows that it's a pleasant place to be!

Ordered the menu (€14.50). Paella tasted bland/too salty. More seasoning (less salt) would be a great addition. Main dish was greasy and lacked vegetables and seasoning (pepper). Dessert looked like it came from a package. It was of no extra value to the dining experience. Quantity was OK (since the low price), quality was underrated. Please use these suggestions to improve.

Mexican restaurant
El Chibiski llanes is a vibrant Mexican restaurant located in Llanes, Asturias. It offers a casual and colorful dining experience with a wide variety of Mexican dishes such as enchiladas, burritos, tamales, and tequila cocktails. The restaurant is known for providing delicious and well-prepared Mexican cuisine at reasonable prices.
This is the best food I’ve had in northern Spain. And very good Mexican food. I would know… I’ve traveled all over Mexico. It’s also a very nice atmosphere inside, and the service was fast. Highly recommended.
Nick M — Google review
If you are looking for some vegan/ vegetarian options to eat in Llanes then Chibiski can be a good option. Taste is definitely better for the meat dishes - according to the friend who tried both types of food. Still for me the over all taste was decent for vegetarian/ vegan food as well. We tried the cheese cake and it was absolutely delicious. If you are there, try the cheesecake for sure.
Shubhra B — Google review
GOOD BUT NOTHING SPECIAL. Chibiski offers a wide range of Mexican dishes, with some variations here and there, but nothing out of the ordinary. We ordered guacamole, gringas, enchiladas and one tamal. Everything was pretty good. My main complaint is that the menu didn't mention that the enchiladas de mole are very spicy—to the point that the chocolate flavor gets somewhat lost. It's rather pricey for Mexican food: expect to pay around €20 per person.
M H — Google review

How disappointing 😔 On arrival at 1 o'clock today a nice gentleman let us see the menu so that I could convince my husband to have lunch at El Chibiski. I had read the rave reviews so was keen to try it. The decor of the restaurant was lovely and there were lots of staff. Initially we were the only people there. A nice young man brought us our drinks. Then after we'd ordered, a couple arrived with two dogs - a greyhound and bulldog? We were shocked that they were invited to eat in the restaurant, just two meters from our table. The lady waitress then brought a water bowl for the dogs. She took more interest in them than us, and the three people (2 + 1) that followed after. The food was tasty and my enchiladas were packed with chicken breast. The complimentary nachos and dips were nice too. Sadly the service from the 3 remaining staff that were around the bar area was just ok. They didn't seem as though they wanted to be there. A real disappointment and nothing like the wonderful exemplary customer service that we've received everywhere else on our travels. To finish off there was no soap in the ladies toilet. Poor hygiene just an hour after opening - there's no excuse for that.

Casa El Rubiu is a hidden gem that doesn't take reservations, but the wait is worth it. The monkfish cachopo and veal are of exceptional quality and not too heavy. The staff is friendly, creating a tranquil atmosphere. Guests praise the impeccable service, delicious food, and relaxed ambiance under grapevines. Mario, the charming waiter, enhances the experience. Parking is easy, but arriving early or waiting for a table is necessary due to its popularity.
Exceptional place! I can’t speak highly enough of it. The welcome, the service, the staff and the food are all as good as it gets. Incredible scallops, the best I have ever had. Same for the pimentos. Amazing cider with a waiter specifically for pouring it for you. All under the shade of grape vines. Relaxed, fun, professional staff. Our Sea bass was perfect. Great cheese cake, coffee and honey digestive at the end. All for less that €100. Something special in the middle of Asturias

We visited Casa El Rubiu in July 2021 and had an amazing dinner. I highly recommend Zamburiñas and Cachopo. Really high quality food at a reasonable price. The ambience and place are very clean, and the service is well trained! Although there is a lot of people there are enough waiters to satisfy demand…

I feel very grateful to have gone here! The staff were really kind to me and when they found out I was doing the Camino they even gave me free cheesecake and a shot and put in lots of effort to talk to me! It really made my day and motivated me when I was feeling a bit low. Thanks to everyone and the food of course, so delicious! :)
