Heroes Square, located in the charming town of Arras, France, is famous for its twin squares - the Grand Place and the Place des Heros. These squares were originally created in the 14th century to host trade fairs and are still bustling with activity today. The cobbled streets of Place des Heros host weekly markets on Wednesday and Saturday mornings, just as they have for centuries.
Lovely square with great views, bars, and restaurants. The tourist office is great for information.

Heroes Square in Ypres ( Leper in Flemish) Belgium is an historical square with many restaurants food shops and eateries. We arrived there around 2 pm on a Wednesday, and the food market had just finished. Historical city and this square and its buildings were largely destroyed during WW1, so has been rebuilt in its original style.
Avril N — Google review
We stopped in Arras on our way home, lovely town and well worth a visit.
Tony J — Google review
Large square surrounded by beautiful buildings. The town hall is probably the most iconic looking building. They do have exhibitions in the town hall. You will find shops and cafes/restaurants in the square. Arras is a small city but very charming. Great place for a day visit. Lots of paid parking in the area.
Legends L — Google review
Beautiful square in a wonderful city with many places to eat and drink. Don’t forget to remember the Heroes the square is named after - on the Résistance Memorial on the Town Hall.

Jan O — Google review
Nice square and very very clean clean Saturday morning had the weekly market which was very large. Well worth a visit.
Alan R — Google review
The square is huge and on Wednesdays and Saturdays they have venders and food merchants filling the square offering fruits, vegy produce, baked goods, rotisserie chicken and lots more. You need to plan to be there.

Grand' Place, also known as the Place des Heros, is a historic site with twin squares dating back to the 14th century. It was originally a bustling hub for medieval merchants from across Europe and continues to be a vibrant shopping destination today. The area is adorned with gabled houses, shops, and restaurants. Many of the distinctive yellow- or orange-brick buildings were rebuilt after being destroyed in World War I.
Beautiful baroque style architecture dating back to 15 century. Both square are alive with restaurant and shops and host an amazing Saturday morning market. Even late Saturday night feels like a family experience.

Must see. This historic square with covered walkways has magnificent architecture that is well preserved. There is ample parking right in the square. There are restaurants, cafés and shops all around and it is only a quick stroll to the Cathedral.
James M — Google review
Absolutely lovely! I drove here from the uk and passed by on my trip, lots of parking nearby. I didn’t bother with a proper car park, I found a free parking bay on the road 15 minutes away. VERY BUSY area, but still nice to visit, plenty of chocolate shops and souvenir shops. If you go down the side roads, they have much more affordable options though!

Carrière Wellington, located in Arras, Hauts-de-France, is a significant historical site that offers guided tours and exhibits detailing its strategic use during the Battle of Arras in 1917. The tunnels served as a shelter for 24,000 British Empire troops awaiting an unprecedented attack. Recently renovated and reopened in November 2021, the memorial provides an immersive journey back in time.
I highly recommend visiting this site. Especially for people interested in history and for those who lost a family member on that fateful day. For me, it was an emotional day as I was walking in the footsteps of my great grandfather who lost his life in the Battle of Arras. The guide was really good, however, I would have preferred if the tour was solely in English as opposed to bilingual, I felt we missed some points.
Dennis G — Google review
We had a tour guide named Manon who explained the Battle of Arras and how thousands of French and Brits worked to build the tunnel. We were brought underground and it was cold and dark, a combination of videos and sounds made the experience even more vivid. North France made a perfect world war tour
Melissa M — Google review
An excellent starting point if you are going to visit the various memorials in the area. The guided tour of the underground areas and the history explanation is detailed and very sobering to see what the soldiers went through over 100 years ago.
Malcolm G — Google review
A profoundly moving experience, the tour of the tunnels flowed effortlessly from start to finish, Merci Isabelle and our guide Mathais. A worthy tribute of rememberance to the Kiwis who worked underground to prepare for the 1917 Battle of Arras, a humbling experience that is sensitive to the memory of those men and to their living descendants. Thank you to everyone involved in preserving the history. Lest we forget.
Hamish M — Google review
Truly impressive ww1 tunneling site occupied by the Kiwis prior to the 1917 battle of Arras. Guided tour with an English speaking guide , the subterranean tour is fascinating, sad, and stunning all at once.
Peter C — Google review
Very interesting experience. Caves do not feel confining if you are claustrophobic. Our guide was fun and made it entertaining and informative.

Very interesting tour. Our guide was knowledgeable, telling us about the preparation for and the Battle of Arras. Definitely worth it.

Below the city of Aras there is an extensive network of underground galleries, known as "Les Boves". These tunnels, which later became shelters for soldiers during World War I, are a unique and historic underground world. Excavated from the Middle Ages (and possibly from Roman times), the tunnels under Aras were originally used as storage areas by merchants and provided the limestone needed for the buildings built there until the 19th century. From the autumn of 1916, special tunnels were being constructed to connect the old ones to each other so that they would be ready for battle. There were 500 of them, built by the New Zealand Tunnel Company, which exploited experienced British miners, as well as the so-called "Bantam Soldiers", who were relatively short for British soldiers. For four months, the workers dug in eight-hour shifts, 24 hours a day. By the morning of the Battle of Aras (April 1917), they had completed 20 kilometers of electrically lit tunnels. The tunnels were named after New Zealand"s capital, Wellington (Carrière Wellington) and eventually turned into more than just tunnels, housing large warehouses, meeting rooms, kitchens, toilets, a hospital and a small railway network. The individual tunnels were named after New Zealand cities, from north to south, so that soldiers could find their way underground. The network of underground tunnels stretched about 20 kilometers below the city and allowed soldiers to go directly to the front lines of the war. 24,000 soldiers were underground the night before the battle. Used both as shelters and for the movement of troops during the offensive, the tunnels contributed to the success of the Battle of Aras. Despite the many casualties - an estimated 158,000 Allied soldiers and about 120,000 Germans were killed - the sudden attack in April 1917 was generally regarded as a tactical success, leading the Allies to the final victory. During World War II, the tunnels were reused by locals as shelters against air raids before being resealed in 1945 and forgotten, until they were rediscovered in 1990. In 2008 the tunnels were opened to the public as part of a new museum dedicated to the memory of those who served in World War I, with a particular focus on the tunnel workers and soldiers who lived and fought under the city.

Les Boves sous la place d’Arras is a fascinating underground network that lies beneath the charming squares of Arras. This labyrinthine space, once utilized for storage during medieval times and later inhabited by soldiers in World War I, now serves as an enchanting showcase for garden designs adorned with vibrant plants and soft artificial lighting from spring to summer.
Booked the 5pm tour on the 17/12/2023. Enjoyed learning about the history of Arras. Our guide (I'm not sure of his name) was brilliant, we were the only English speakers and he translated for us - even though it effectively meant running two tours. Big thank you to him for being so accommodating!

What an amazing tour of the caves right below the belfry and town squares. Vincent was an excellent tour guide and very knowledgeable giving the tour in French and English. The tours run throughout the day but it is advisable to book in advance.

It's worth a visit no reservation require. Buy the ticket on the spot and wait about 5 min for the tour to start. The guide spoke French and English.

Great informative little tour of the Boves under the market Square. An audio guide for little ones would make this even better. Interesting to see how they were used in the 12 century and how they were adapted during the world wars.

Magnificent tour- such an interesting venue. Excellent guide. Also we had a tiny dog that I held in my jacket who also really enjoyed the tour and tourists and we very much appreciated him being accommodated

The site is pretty interesting not for its beauty but for the history behind. It is a good starting point to visit the city: it gives you a good prospective about how the town developed during centuries. Guide explanations both in French and in English.

The Beffroi d'Arras is a remarkable historic Gothic clock tower that is now open to the public. It offers stunning panoramic views of the city and Hero Square. Visitors can take a lift and climb 43 steps to reach the door for access, with an entrance fee of 9 euros per person or 20 euros for a family group of three during COVID-19 times.
Lift and steps takes your from under the Tourist Office upto a viewing area giving stunning 360° of the surrounding area.
Peter W — Google review
Max 4 people in the lift. 43 steps to the top. Helpful staff. Queue for a bit for the lift.
Troy C — Google review
The bell tower of Aras, about 75 m high, is a real treasure of Gothic architecture. It was destroyed during the First World War but was accurately restored with reinforced concrete in non -visible parts. The view from the top is indescribable: you see the squares with the Flemish baroque buildings, the panoramic views of Aras, the countryside around the city. The ascent is a nice experience: you go up with an elevator and then about 30 steps on a twist staircase and thus reach the top. There it can blow quite a bit, so it takes a little attention. The bell tower was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005. It is an experience that combines history and architecture and is ideal for those who wish to look from the city.
Dimitris — Google review
Very good place to overlook the Hero Square. It costs entrance fee to enter. There is a very small exhibition included in the fare as well. Some stairs need to be taken to access the panoramic view. You might want to be extra careful if having bad knees.
徐瑞智 — Google review
Easiest belltower ever, its been rebuilt after ww1 and they put an elevator in! Under the belfort are historic caves.

Beautiful building with a high tower who offers wonderful views of Arras. In the coronavirus time, the tower visit costs 9 euros one person and 20 euros for a group of 3 ( same family). To visit the tower you take a lift fist and climb 43 steps to the door to get out. You have 15 minutes in total for the visit. It is a must see in Arras.

Great place to go, beautiful views from the tower

Interesting post-war architecture. All rather grand, but not to my taste. A trip up the bell tower is made a lot easier thanks to the lift! Great views, obviously.

Le Ch'ti Charivari Arras is a delightful dining spot that captures the essence of French cuisine in a charming setting. Nestled in the heart of Arras, this restaurant offers an inviting atmosphere perfect for enjoying a meal with friends or family. Guests rave about their theatrical flaming steak tower, which not only tantalizes the taste buds but also provides an impressive visual experience as warm whisky is poured over it and ignited.
We had a fab meal here! We had the steak and chicken to cook at the table, which we really enjoyed. The potato gratin was a highlight though! The staff also coped well given how busy it was. Definitely recommend!
Charlotte W — Google review
Visited during the RWC 23 while staying in Arras. Was one of only a few restaurants open on a Sunday night. Went in and was shown to a table, ordered a beer each and looked at the menu. Decided on the flaming steak tower (see photo) between 3 of us- came with a small salad cheese potatoes and we ordered an extra bowl of fries. Couple of bottles of red to accompany. The tower came out and has warm whisky poured over and set alight. Very theatrical and created a wonderful aroma. Even managed to set a napkin alight. Nice big chunks of prime beef that was very tasty, potatoes also very delicious. Took a while to settle, but after a break we chose desserts - 2 crème brûlée and a tiramisu. Great place to eat, friendly staff and nice atmosphere. There is a lack of taxis in Arras on a Sunday night - but during the walk back to out apartment we found a bar - so all was good in the end!
Simon W — Google review
Nice bustling restaurant with pleasant staff, but not many of them! Our orders were ignored or missed completely because the one lady waiter was too busy. But the food was good and plenty of it. It got very smelling when customers ordered the raclette, lots of paraffin fumes...

SUPER RUDE EMPLOYEES! NOT WELCOMING TO CLIENTS! STEAK WAS NOT PROPERLY COOKED — SO TOUGH EVEN THOUGH IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE MEDIUM RARE! SERVICE WAS EXTREMELY SLOW AND THE WAITING TIME WAS RIDICULOUS!

very nice restaurant - friendly and very fast service - we were on a Sunday where only a menu was on offer but it was very much worth it

We tried to get a table on a Saturday evening, but unfortunately the restaurant was fully booked. The staff were helpful in advising the nearest restaurant which was 5kms away. When we told them we were on foot one of them (John) offered and took us to the restaurant in his car. He further offered to pick us up after his shift and drive us back to our hotel. How helpful!!! I can't vouch for the food, but can certainly vouch for the helpfulness of the staff.

L'Entre Nous is a popular cellar-restaurant in Arras that offers the local specialty, Andouillette. It is known for its traditional-dishes-meet-modern-ambience setting and affordable two-course-and-coffee option. The restaurant is highly recommended for its fantastic food and fresh, flavorful dishes like the goats cheese salad. English-speaking waitstaff provide a relief for those with limited French skills.
We had a lovely lunch here, super friendly service, very professional and hospitable. The client is king. Delicious food, excellent wine and friendly priced. We will come back!

Just terrible. Didn’t bring our starters at all, and I got a steak instead of seabass! Wouldn’t be that bad but the steak was dryer than anything I have ever had, with a questionable dried sauce on it - and no vegetables. All for €136 for 4!
Mr C — Google review
Fantastic food. My french is terrible but we muddled through to get a table, then another waiter arrived who spoke English so that was a relief. I had the goats cheese salad, and it was fresh and full of flavour, really delicious.
Matt — Google review
Disappointing We had a dinner here on 13.07.18 and even though it started with reasonably good starters, the beef served as main course was like a piece of rubber and went back to the kitchen. Had it not been for the fact that it was charged in full on the bill, this review might have been a little better. Delivering inedible food should obviously not happen but charging for it is inexcusable. Stay away from this place.

Nestled conveniently near the train station, Le Bouchot is a charming little restaurant that promises a delightful culinary experience. Known for its seafood specialties, particularly mussels, it offers an extensive menu dedicated to this beloved dish. Guests have raved about the freshness of their oysters and scallops, as well as the generous portions served in a cozy atmosphere. The attentive staff ensures that diners feel welcomed and well taken care of throughout their meal.
Amazing restaurant in an accessible location. The restaurant is minutes away from the train station and parking lots are available close by. For lunch I arrived quite early and I was welcomed well. The restaurant have a wide varieties for sea food and fish, mussels being their speciality. There is an entire page dedicated for this and out of the 4 different types we ordered I enjoyed three of them. The waitress was checking on us from time to time to ensure that everything is going well. I was not sure about the beer and the waitress helped us decide…did not like the local blonde beer that much but thats up to my preference.

Fabulous selection of Moules Frites, and excellent local beers. Owner and his wife were super friendly, would recommend.
John S — Google review
Honestly had such an incredible meal there. It was our first time in Arras and I wanted Moulles Frites so we found the Bouchot and decided to go cos they did steak as well and my partner is not such a big sea-foodie. The had an entire page dedicated to different types of moulles frites. I had the Moulles Mariolles which had a local cheese in it and it was amazing - one of the best moulles I have had. And my partner had the rump steak and the peppercorn sauce was exceptional. We had the crème brûlée and an Irish coffee and both were really delicious. The Chablis was lovely too and service was really wholesome. Honestly if you are looking for a homely French dining experience in Aras that’s great value for money go here! I’d come back to Arras just to eat here.

An absolutely sensational meal! Without any Exaggeration, this was one of the best meals I’ve ever heard in my life. The service was impeccable, the presentation outstanding and the food was beyond description. I was recommended the seabass with cheese sauce which was a superb recommendation and literally noted in my mouth. Towards the end I actually slow down so I could make it last longer! I am so thankful to have seen this place on the Internet and visited.

This wine bar, LA DAME JEANNE, is a delightful find in Arras. It offers a wonderful selection of wines that each have their own unique story. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, with excellent hospitality from the friendly and helpful staff. The bar also serves delicious snacks to complement their wonderful wines. Additionally, they provide great recommendations for exploring the town and make guests feel comfortable with their kindness and warmth.
Highly recommended. A wonderful warm welcome, beautiful wine and delicious food. Staff took time to make us feel very comfortable and talk about all the available wines. Food and wine changes regularly so there’s always something new and delicious to try. Look forward to visiting again soon.

This place was really good. The bread, the hummus, cheese, the drinks and desserts, all so good. I did remove a star because so many of their dishes had pork or shellfish I resorted to eating a grilled cheese sandwich.

Great place. Warm hospitality, good wine including a good choice by the glass, and good food. The barmaid was exceptionally friendly and helpful and spoke good English, which compensated for my bad French. It was a cold and wet evening when I went in and the place made me feel warmer and drier just buy it’s atmosphere! And, of course, centrally located.

We read the great reviews about La Dame Jeanne so had to visit during a trip to the Arras Christmas market. We weren't looking for a restaurant meal and so the small plates menu was perfect for us, and the food was very good. We sat in the cellar and had exceptional table service, particularly enjoying talking through the extensive wine list. The service was outstanding and we were made very comfortable. We enjoyed it so much that we returned for lunch the following day. Highly recommended.
