Mahon

Mahón, or Maó, is the capital of the Spanish island of Menorca. It’s known for its British-style Georgian houses and sheltered harbor. Santa María Church, with an ornate 19th-century organ, sits on central Plaça de la Constitució. Next to the church, the city hall has a Renaissance facade and a clock donated by the island’s first British governor. The Menorca Museum displays art and exhibits on the island's history.

The Museo de Menorca, located in an old 15th-century Franciscan convent, is a museum showcasing the cultural heritage of Minorca. It houses a vast collection of 200,000 historic and archaeological objects that trace the island's history from prehistory to the present day. The museum displays ancient sculptures, artifacts from Neolithic settlers dating back to 4,000 BC, and exhibits from the Talayotic era.
This is a very special place. A brand new museum which showcases not only the history of this contested island but the intricacy of its culture and the cultures that occupied it. From the excellent intro video to the displays and surprisingly readable supporting material, this is a must-visit for any Menorca traveller.

4 Euros entry, 3 floors of history from early Menorcan settlement, through all the subsequent ownership, right up to modern times. The interactive island map on the 3rd floor was very interesting.
Richard W — Google review
It can be visited for free on Sundays and from 3:00 PM on Tuesdays and Thursdays between October and May. We learned from the video shown here that there is also a labyrinth in Menorca. Thank you!

Engaging and educational for all ages. An excellent history of the island, its people and how it transitioned through the centuries. Excellent artifacts and short explanations of each exhibit in three languages. Not busy. Buy tickets on site. Enjoy.
Jay J — Google review
Very fascinating museum and the direction to follow the permanent exibit is clearly marked with arrows. Really enjoyed following the story round the museum. However i accidentally entered without paying having seen no sign or been greeted by anyone - I was then asked to return downstairs to buy a ticket which I gladly did

Very interesting place showing the history of the island politically, religiously, and culturally. Very nicely presented. We noted the informative descriptions alongside artefacts.

super interesting about the history of menorca. free entry for under 18s which was very useful! would recommend a visit, english and spanish translations on signs which was great.
Molly D — Google review
Very interesting museum, but unfortunately the staff are not friendly and were quite rude to people when informing the museum was closing. A shame to have that ending to an enjoyable visit. Some training in customer service would be helpful and make people want to come back to explore more.

Es Castell, located in eastern Menorca in the Balearic Islands, Spain, was established in 1771 by British Col. Patrick Mackellar and was initially named Georgetown. While the port area of Mahon may not be the most visually appealing due to its layout, Es Castell offers a more charming alternative with its picturesque little harbor. This small municipality is worth a visit for those seeking a quaint and scenic setting on their travels.

Rice restaurant
Nestled in the picturesque port of Mahon, El Rais is a must-visit dining destination on Menorca's eastern coast. This charming restaurant not only offers breathtaking views from its spacious outdoor terrace but also showcases an innovative culinary approach that elevates traditional dishes. The menu features a delightful array of starters, including signature house specialties like red prawn dumplings and artichokes wrapped in Joselito pancetta.
From the beginning we were warmly greeted with plenty of seating options. The staff were diligent, attentive and timely. We had a person with coeliac disease (gluten allergy), and the staff made sure to alert the kitchen. They confirmed with us how the food would be prepared with no cross contamination and processes. Food was presented beautifully and also came out in a timely manner. There were no long waits but there was enough breathing room to enjoy the relaxing atmosphere. We never felt rushed. Overall an excellent experience. Highly recommended. /10

Perfect Spanish food. The tomato bread and beef paella are always stand-outs. We come here every year and it never disappoints.
Ella S — Google review
Best meal we had on our trip, dishes were full of flavours
Julia S — Google review
Located in one of the best venues of the natural harbor of the Menorcan capital, Maò, El Rais offers on of the best cuisine of the isle. On the beautiful terrace with view on sailboats, you will live a convincing gastronomic experience, with raw and cooked fish in the center of a this contemporary cuisine. Dessert not at the level of the rest. Interesting wine list. High quality (and good prices) of the wines by the glass list. Informal service.
Alfio — Google review
Food is closer to a 4 but views decor and service are a solid 5. The almond coulant was the highlight of the menu. The steak was super tasty (aged for weeks) but came in a bit cold. Book yourself in the terrace to enjoy the amazing views. There’s a quite steep staircase to get to the dining area.

Amazing lunch with my family served by the maitre Juri; lovely experience
Valentino G — Google review
Great dinner, the tuna was average, no mussels today but the croquettes, the 🥔, the fish and meat were really tasty, love the place and service. Will be back for the rice as was dinner and better for lunch
Santi T — Google review
I was really suprised with the place in a very positive way: quite a creative approach to dishes (especially local beef with small accompagnements that you need to roll and taste all together) and smoked tuna carpaccio - wow! I really discovered some new stuff for me as well, for example, osso bucco from a very special and very fat part of tuna. The service was super good and friendly, with a funny and easy approach, and as well super fast. And last but not least - the place itself, the terrace is really beautiful. Obviously not a regret!

Restaurant
Restaurant Ses Forquilles is a beloved tapas spot in the heart of the city, known for its homestyle dishes and affordable prices. Originally located on Rovellada de Dalt, it has now found a new home within the Cristine Bedfor boutique hotel. The restaurant maintains its local charm and is popular among locals for weekday lunches.
Very delish foie starter and stunning beef steak! Some of the dishes might be a bit less of your cup of tea, but the service has been amazing! Absolutely recommend it!
Iulia T — Google review
The food is very good, the service also very good. The waiter explained the dishes outside the menu, especials, the surprise 😲 was the price of the open omelette that we order with some mushroom that was 24 euros, incredible. The rest was ok but this one was very overpriced. I love the restaurant even the waiter told us about the omelette with esclatasangs and there were only 3 but buletus, the dessert and especially the sashimi amazing. Price is +40 PP. I think ses culleres from that same group is worth to visit. We came back yesterday and the dinner was awesome, service fantastic, food incredible.

Wonderful dinner experience with lovely food and wine and a very friendly staff.

I was a fan of this restaurant when it was much smaller 4 years ago. Since pandemic they haven’t opened for a long time. I really miss a lot the egg with truffle and foie. That was the reason I came today. The restaurant moved to another place and it is much bigger now, everything looks prettier than before. So I ordered the dishes that I have ordered before. But we are a bit disappointed about the service. With this high price, they forgot my bread , beer and the bill. 🥹 The tables are not stable and the girl let customer put the card in the bottom by themselves. And when they asked for the napkin, the boy said there’s no more. (Well in the end he took tissues ) The steak and tartar we ordered were nothing special and overpriced. Even the egg that I liked most, they only put a little bit truffle now.. perhaps because of the season. I gave this restaurant 5 stars 4 years ago. But after this dinner, I would probably not come again …

We went to See Forquilles to finish our holiday in Menorca and it didn’t disappoint! Staff were extremely friendly and helped answer any questions we had on the menu/wine. The oyster was the best oyster we’ve ever had and the suckling pig was to die for! Unbelievable food, will definitely recommend.
Joanna — Google review
Felt obliged to write this review mainly due to the poor service we received. The sirloin steak was very bland and disappointing. We asked for some mustard and the amount brought was minuscule, barely enough for one mouthful. The worst part was that we had to ask multiple times for an extra plate, mustard and the bill. It seemed the staff were very inattentive. One waitress was lovely and smiley and seemed to try hard but another never smiled once and made us feel like a burden. When I went to the toilet and smiled at her it, she made a funny face which I found very unwelcoming. For the amount of money charged and the beautiful decor, the experience was very impersonal and no one even asked if our food was ok. We’ve been staying half board and we’re really looking forward to a meal out and this place was very disappointing. We won’t be returning.
Lorna C — Google review
A bit messy at the beginning of service, it took a while for them to get our order. Very attentive and knowledgeable service team. Drinks took a while but food came very fast. Tomato salad and grilled lettuce were great. Good Veggie options.
Zineb H — Google review
The food was good, but small portions and stuffy atmosphere. It was quite formal and frequently mainly by people aged 70+. Also, it was a lovely day but they only seated people inside. Staff seemed quite stressed and weren't very friendly.

With a focus on contemporary Menorcan cuisine, this rustic setting provides an ideal backdrop for enjoying flavorful dishes and exploring the local culinary scene.
Uauuuu, it took me long time to visit this restaurant and it is worth to go, the black rice paella was delicious, I think that besides the normal the addition of some vegetables made it extra special, the salad summer style too, the service fantastic, young people but caring for everything. The price was 55 euros per person so you must know where are you going but taste of foodwas fantastic... Final mention to the apple cake that was best ever
Santi T — Google review
The food in this place was pretty amazing. But for some reason, the waiter insisted in keeping the door open in the middle of a mind numbing heat wave despite our multiple requests to keep it closed. Rendering the A/C useless. Other than that, like I said the food was top notch and the service was good. It was just very difficult to enjoy the meal.

Full attention for my whole delicious meal! Local (award-winning!) beer and wine, fresh fish and summer salad. Fabulous restaurant with a 40+ year history in the quaint southeast corner of Menorca. 🍷 🐠 🍺 🍅

It’s like a good tradition, we come back to that family cozy, tasty restaurant with a great atmosphere and menu every year. Special thanks to the owner of that restaurant 👨‍🍳 Black paella, desserts and wine 🍷 bellissimo ✨ This place is one of the 12 Michelin’s recommended restaurants on Menorca island.

From the moment we walked in we were welcomed warmly by the owner, we had lovely table in the courtyard which was beautifully decorated. The food was perfect in presentation and in taste, this is the 4th time I have been here and i would 100% come back again.

The best place we tried in our stay in Menorca. Food is amazing, price is good for what you get and plates have a modern cousin look. The waiters are very nice and there is also a patio outside. Def I highly recommend this place!! Cant wait to go back there

Market
Tapas bar
The Mercat des Peix is a historic fish market in Mahon, Menorca, offering traditional "pintxos" tapas, sandwiches, and wine. The market is part of the vibrant local scene with its charming colonial architecture and open-air boat trips. Adjacent to the market is the Mercat des Claustre, a food and craft market where visitors can sample local products at tapas bars.
Great place with a large selection of tapas, pinchos and drinks. You can choose what you like from few different stalls. Sitting inside and outside. Lovely place with history and nice local food.

Fantastic old fish market selling a range of fresh fish and seafood. Nice courtyard with toilets and benches and tables. Inside you can buy the most amazing pinxos!!
Chris S — Google review
Really nicely setup fish market conditioned to offer a wide array of tapas and drinks. Despite the name there are only three fish mongers selling at their stalls. But they usually have a nice range of fish and seafood to choose from.

Nice market to stop by during the day and have some tapas. There are loads of small dishes and it's nice to mix and match. Not many indoor seats, but there are some tables outside.

Taps Can Avelino is a delightful gem in the heart of Menorca, particularly known for its vegetarian-friendly offerings amidst a sea of tapas bars. This charming spot features an eclectic menu that includes standout dishes like sweet potato with green pesto and a refreshing goat cheese salad topped with strawberries and walnuts. While it caters wonderfully to vegetarians, meat lovers will also find plenty of high-quality tapas and raciones to enjoy.
We found this gem of a restaurant via @tripadvisor (voted 7th best restaurant in Mahón) and it certainly lived up to the hype! We chose 5 dishes from the menus wide selection and washed it down with pitcher of Sangria. The food was freshly cooked, full of flavour and just so perfectly delicious! We had: - Goats cheese salad with walnuts, balsamic glaze and strawberries - Potatas Bravas - Cristal tomato bread - Pork, frites and a Mahón cheese sauce - Calamari with Aioli Read more at @whatellsatetoday on instagram

Chicken was over cooked on the outside, houmous tasteless, the steak was horrible with the skinniest fries I have ever seen. Really didn't enjoy the food, staff were friendly.
Lorraine R — Google review
Wonderful, reasonably priced restaurant that serves larger versions of tapas, so it's more of a meal. 4 of us ordered 7 dishes, and were sated. Friendly, polite service. Off the tourist track, so that explains the high quality, and majority of actual Menorcans at the other tables.
Aidas P — Google review
I had a fantastic experience at this tapas restaurant. The food was amazing, packed with flavor. There was a great variety, perfect for sharing or mixing and matching. Portion sizes were surprisingly generous two dishes are more than enough for one person.

Really top notch experience, not only the food but also the presentation was also fabulous. Highly recommended.

We read about this place before coming and it didn't disappoint. Large selection of tapas and great taste. We went for the langostinos, zamburiñas, courgette carpaccio and canelones. On top of that, easy to park the car nearby and very friendly and efficient staff
Alberto R — Google review
Nice tapas menu, above average quality, nice environment. What's not to like? Recommended to us twice, would recommend to others.
Tony F — Google review
Wide variety of different foods, not only Spanish flavours but also from around the world - superb. Service was friendly, helpful, spoke English, efficient and unpretentious. The langoustines, wrapped in crispy noodles with a mango and curry mayo, were our favourite. We also enjoyed prawn risotto with squid ink and asparagus, smoked anchovies with avocado and tomato on toast, and croquettes (deep fried balls) of shrimp with squid ink. For desert, for us it was mainly about the chocolate - Guinness chocolate cake, chocolate tart with hazlenut ice cream and chocolate fondant, accompanied by a sweet wine from Jerez.
