Catholic cathedral
Sights & Landmarks
Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Cathedral, located in Leiria, Portugal, is a stunning example of Joanine architecture from the 16th century. This cathedral shares its design with two other cathedrals in Portugal and is considered a hallmark of late Renaissance inspiration. The Mannerist-style building has undergone several changes over the years due to natural disasters and historical events. Despite its simple exterior, the interior boasts a harmonious layout with three naves of equal height.
The construction of the See began in 1546, according to a project by architect Afonso Álvares, who opted for the mannerist style abroad, retaining a harmonious interior with three naves of the same height, of late Renaissance inspiration. The church was consecrated only in 1574, when it had no sacristy, or other dependencies. In the following centuries some changes have been made thanks to episcopal action. The 1755 earthquake caused serious damage to the main facade, whose reconstruction began the following year. In 1772, D. Frei Miguel de Bolhões and Sousa had the bell tower built a little away from the building, over the old medieval tower of the gates of the sun, which marked the southern entrance into the castle wall. In 1810, during the Napoleonic wars, a fire partially consumed the interior of the church. Outstanding a sober, baroque and mannerist architecture, the See of Leiria has some similarities to those of Portalegre and Miranda do Douro and also bears some vestiges of gothic heritage. It has Latin cross plant and three naves of equal height, separated by pillars. The maneer-style chancel, dated the seventeenth century and is by Baltasar Álvares and Friar João Turriano. It integrates the altarpiece with paintings by Simão Rodrigues, which portray episodes of the life of the Virgin Mary. Two large baroque organs that overlap two side chairs complete the decoration.

did a quick visit as we're on a 80 minute transit between buses at a nearby bus station, we arrived here at the cathedral at 0930, not sure if there's Sunday mass as the church was empty, we prayed the rosary and gave thanks to mother Mary and Lord Jesus,

Majestic beautiful church
Aiva J — Google review
A very beautiful church, both from the inside and outside. Its simple look just somehow fits the surroundings and doesn't stand out in any bad way. Regular Misa (Mass) can be attended by anyone who wishes to enter.

Very beautiful church, perfect for praying.

The Leiria's main church right on the city's downtown. Near the Leiria's castle and other important spots on the city. Have masses all days at 8:00 AM. There are also a touristic way based on the Eça de Queiroz novel The Crime of Father Amado which was based on this church and the neighborhood. Some great place to have good or drink nearby.

Portuguese restaurant
Restaurante Hotel Rural Casa da Nora is an upscale hotel located in the village of Cortes, just 15 minutes away from Leiria. The restaurant, Casa da Nora Restaurante, offers a pleasant dining experience with a family-like ambiance amidst old farmhouses by the Lis River. The establishment prides itself on providing traditional Portuguese gastronomy and laid-back service in a discreet environment.
Such a wonderful experience. Our room was darling with a magical sun room everyone was so friendly and helpful. We had two children and the loved staying here. The restaurant is amazing we ate here twice during our stay. The room came with a welcome bottle of wine, a mini fridge, and was very clean.

Excellent food. Fabulous Sangria, desserts, mains and more. The staff was friendly and didn't rush you, even though they were busy. We went for lunch and everyone loved everything. Both the fish soup and vegetable soup were creamy and delicious. The steak with the mushroom risotto was incredible. The meat was tender and cooked perfectly. The mushroom risotto might be the best I've ever had. We had the "best cheesecake in Portugal" and it didn't disappoint. A thick graham cracker crust, light and creamy center and tons of fresh berries. Our friends had pork that was also yummy with a grilled pineapple with mint sauce for desserts. We spent about 53€ for 2 people
Chris R — Google review
We stayed for 3 nights. The hotel exterior was beautiful, and our room had a nice antique charm. However, the service was very poor – staff spoke little English and no one offered to help with our luggage during check-in or check-out. The toilet and bathroom were outdated, and the shower did not work properly. Breakfast was just okay.
Vikas W — Google review
Wonderful place! We enjoyed the tasteful dinner and breakfast, quite a pity to leave after only one night. Excellent rooms and customer service!
Tania F — Google review
We dined at Casa da Nora in Cortes and enjoyed the tasting menu by Chef Rafael Ferreira. It was a wonderful experience from start to finish. The dishes included a delicious amuse-bouche served between slices of bread, a stunning celeriac and scallop dish, perfectly cooked rare steak, tender pork on a skewer, and a local specialty of fish and mussels in richly flavoured rice (NOT a paella but similar in style). To finish, we had a refreshing dessert of strawberries with ginger wine and ice cream. Every single dish was a triumph. My companion’s favourite was the celeriac with scallops. Mine was the skewered pork. We enjoyed it so much that we are going back again tonight. It is absolutely worth it and cost around €60 per person.

First of all, so beautiful, luxurious and comfortable. It’s kept clean. There’s definitely a woman’s touch to this place. There are Devine smells from a fragrance in the residency part. Towels are branded with their own marking. Little reading nooks, seating areas, and my friend- a cute little cat that was so friendly! Small things make your stay, you can agree. The pool, quiet and never any people in there, you can easily have the whole pool to yourself. The restaurant and hotel is cosy and has a cabin vibe, which is so nice! Almost like your aunt or grandma’s house. It’s surrounded by nature and polite Portuguese culture. Not many shops around but a trip to Leiria for €3/€5 by uber or bolt is easy enough. Just know the shops close early!! Anyway, thank you casa da Nora. You made our stay. And you didn’t have to do anything in your advantage. Really great place.

Restaurant
Nestled just a short drive north of Leiria in the charming town of Marrazes, O Pipo Velho is a delightful family-run restaurant that captures the essence of regional Portuguese cuisine. With its name translating to 'old barrel,' this eatery boasts a rustic ambiance adorned with wine corks and wooden barrels, creating an inviting atmosphere reminiscent of visiting your grandmother's home. The interior reflects traditional design elements akin to a tasca or old bar, making it both unique and cozy.
A great restaurant to visit if you are in town. Plenty of space to park, great menus at a great price and with quality. You can't miss this if you are in Leiria.

Super traditional Portuguese food. I have not liked bacalhau so far, but the Bacalhau and crème gratin here was superb.
Sacha M — Google review
We got there quite late at around 9pm, we were hungry and wanted some real food. But they insisted on taking a long time to bring out the food so that we might be tricked to take the entree on the table. After over an hour waiting, some of us ordered 2nd drink already, they finally gave up and bring out the food that didn’t take long to cook. I don’t know if it’s normal or not, some part of the shrimp was not even fully cooked, well i ate it anyway. At the end they still tried to push us to order for dessert but no thankyou, we didn’t know if we’d have to wait for another hour or not…
E H — Google review
Hard to find, but it's a gem! Traditionally designed interior as if of a tasca or an old bar makes the place very unique and at the same time very cosy to stay in. It can almost feel like you are visiting your grandma;) Still, the place is very clean and neat. Service is perfect, with very polite staff. Food is delicately served, but remains simple, tasty and gives homey feelings (there are a few vegetarian options that are not omelette). Prices are average, just like in the center/beach of Leiria, therefore it's totally worth it to come here for a visit.

French restaurant
Luna is a charming restaurant located in Quinta de Santo Antonio, Leiria, offering a mix of French, Mediterranean, and European cuisine. The intimate and welcoming ambiance, along with the carefully curated decor and attentive service, make it one of the most romantic dining spots in Leiria. The use of fresh and high-quality ingredients is evident in their dishes. The restaurant's French influence adds to its allure, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of Paris.
One of the best food ever. The atmosphere is chill, the service is friendly fith recommendations that did fit our needs. The Food: Usually I order few dishes to bet on few different options in case I do not like some of the meals. Here we had duck in oven and octopus with gnocchi. Both were prepared with such a cure and Relation to Food, you can actually feel this attitude. The tastes but also the textures of food so playfully combined, like a via michelin mitchen. The cook is a Master Chief !! My most sincere compliments to the cook, the owner, the waiters and every person contributed this place. The food quantity was surprisingly enough. With one dish each we did feel good enough. We did order deserts only to extend this Music going. Highly recommend the place. Prices are low for what we get. Since I am travelling, hope I am back one day to have another amazing experience as the todays one

If you're looking for an exciting and unique dining experience, look no further than Cardamomo in Leiria. Here you'll find delicious vegan specialities as well as the perfect spot to enjoy some Indian cuisine. The atmosphere is really cool and the staff are incredibly friendly, so it's definitely worth a visit!
Stopped here for vegan lunch. Very quiet, but had a lovely chat with Nuno & Patricia the owners who are very friendly.Food well presented & tasty. Dog friendly, our dog Apolo had a sleep while we ate. Well worth a visit for vegan food.

Extremely rude staff. We were yelled at on the phone for calling -well before time! - to politely cancel a reservation made for two due to unexpected family reasons. The man accused me of being the ruin of restaurants (the hell?) and that reservations should not be cancelled as it was extremely rude to do so… (and yet I thought the rude thing would be not to call beforehand?). Anyway, I’m not sure whatever is going on with the staff there or if he was having a bad day but really this was unbelievable, I was truly appalled. Just to add that this would be a first visit so I cannot comment on the food or anything else, but to avoid unhinged staff I would recommend you stay away from this place.

One of the best restaurants in Leiria. A must every year during the gothic music festival. A fusion of Indian (from Goa), Italian and Portuguese cuisine, with a lot of loving innovation by the owners and carefully prepared for you. A very confy atmosphere, there are even books you may read during your meal. Get ready to be utterly and definitely pampered.

Excellent vegan options in downtown Leiria. They serve Indian and Portuguese food, they are not a vegan restaurant but know all about vegan food, always have a few vegan options (including the appetizers and their naan) and their dishes are delicious. Very cool location in a fantastic town, worth a visit.

Be careful coming here as a tourist as they only accept Portuguese cards. We were not informed about this nor was it displayed. When we pointed out this concern we were also told it was our problem. The restaurant was closed, but one of the staff arranged a snack and drink for us. We had just been to the hospital, so needed a pick me up.
Roy W — Google review
The restaurant is unable to offer a choice of menu for groups. We were given a choice of either turkey or vegetarian for the main course. There were three entres. Presentation was fine. The presentation of the main plates needed a lot to be desired. Vegetarian mushrooms were very bland and foating in oil. The potato wedges were soggy and the garnish had wilted. Only one option for desert chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream on a a few pieces of mango. Brownie was dry, ice cream no flavour and presentation poor. Cost was €30 including wine or water. Overall the restaurant might be OK for individual tables where there is a full choice of menu. I would not recommend this restaurant for any group booking due to the lack of choice. Better alternatives available. Bathroom was visited twice between 8pm and 11.45pm. No toilet paper or hand towels in the men's toilets. These should have been checked.
