Qingdao

Qingdao, in China’s eastern Shandong province, is a port city of skyscrapers, parks and beaches bordering the Yellow Sea. It's known for its beer, a legacy of the German occupation (1898-1914). The Tsingtao Beer Museum celebrates the namesake brewery, founded here by Germans in 1903, and the Qingdao International Beer Festival is major event. There's also German-style architecture in the old city center.

Badaguan, also known as the "Eight Passes," is a serene and picturesque area located in Qingdao, Shandong Province. This historical street district features tree-lined roads, garden-style villas, and foreign-styled buildings that give it a unique charm. The scenic area overlooks Taiping Bay and Huiquan Bay and is characterized by its Gothic castle, which is a popular spot for wedding photography.
Flowers for four seasons are ready for visitors!! It’s a huge park for taking great pictures! I spend 2 hours but can’t even finish 1/4 of the Park, it contains botanical garden, rock garden...etc. Definitely worth a full afternoon!!

Badaguan (Chinese: 八大关; pinyin: Bā Dà Guān ; lit. 'the eight great passes') is a historical mansion area located near the coastline in the city of Qingdao, Shandong, China. Badaguan is made up of streets named after great military forts of the ancient times. It was originally a residential area for the Germans built when Qingdao was a German protectorate (1897–1914). Each street is lined with a single species of tree and many street names are colloquially known by the trees that line them.[1] Along the streets are houses built in a variety of European architectural styles. Badaguan is bordered on the west by No. 1 Beach and on the east by No. 3 Beach. Badaguan is a popular destination for wedding photography. One can often see dozens of newlywed-couples being photographed along Badaguan's shoreline and greenspace.
Mao C — Google review
Historical district with a lot of parks and old buildings, THE local spot for photo shots. We have encountered no less than 40 couples taking their wedding gown pictures here.
Li G — Google review
A nice area to walk around and enjoy the greenery and european style architecture. It's also near the beach (no. 2 bathing scenic area).
Jasmine N — Google review
Interesting old homes in European styles, but there is an admission fee for each house and one needs to do a bit of walking.
Andrew P — Google review
We liked this area a lot! Many big house and it felt like you were in Europe somewhere.

Zhanqiao Pier, a historic 19th-century naval pier in Qingdao, China, stretches 440 meters into the iconic Huilan Ge pavilion. The city's old streets and lanes retain their traditional charm, with European buildings nestled among trees and various churches like the Catholic Church on Zhejiang Road.
One of the most famous Tsingtao tourists attractions. You can see bunch of sea birds here during winter. You may feed them with bread. It's also very convenient to be there with different kinds of transportations.
Luca C — Google review
This place has hundreds of sea gulls flying around and was absolutely crowded with folks feeding them and taking videos and pictures. There are also several YouTubers and Tiktokkers recording their dances and experiences.
Cher K — Google review
Too many people. Overall nice to walk. You can take a newspaper photo for some payment not Alipay. But there is also a lot of photographers
SeungHyun L — Google review
Super crowded, quite impossible to get a good picture. Still worth to take a stroll towards the pier and see one of Qingdao's most iconic places. Free entrance. Would recommend to walk towards Luxun Park 鲁迅公园 and take photos of the Pier from afar with the waves in the background, and with much lesser people. Take a walk towards that direction during the sunset time to enjoy the best views.
Ws L — Google review
If you are a beer lover, you are going to want to read this. The building at the end of the pier is the building printed on the label of the Qingdao beer bottles (or so I am told). After visiting the Qingdao beer museum our tour bus took us here and I have to say that I do not understand why this place only has a 3.9 star rating at the time I'm writing this. It is a bit crowded but views, the building and street food and performers are more than anyone could ask for. I will post some pictures of when I visited and hope the place is as beautiful and cool for you as it was for my group and I.
Brian V — Google review
It's just a pier into the sea from the Taiping Road promenade. The pagoda temple at the end of the pier is empty n locked up. Plenty of speed boat and water ski scooter rides offered. The place is pretty popular with local tourists and the Prince Hotel nearby is suppose to serve a good breakfasts for its guests as well as other dining options.

13jul2025. Sunday. We visited Qingdao Zhanqiao Pier. A lot of tourists on a hot summer holiday. A lot of children came to Qingdao sightseeings.
Muihua N — Google review
I've visited the place in Jan/Feb 2017. It's a low season here this time of the year, but there were a lot of people on the pier, especially during the day. I personally enjoyed it more in the evening, as you can enjoy the night view of the city coast.

Specialty Museums
When in Qingdao, a visit to the Tsingtao Brewery Museum is a must for beer enthusiasts and history buffs alike. Established by the Germans in 1903, this museum showcases the industrial manufacturing process of China's second largest brewery. Visitors can learn about the brewery's history and enjoy two complimentary glasses of unpasteurized draft beer, known for its freshness that lasts only 24 hours.
The Qingdao Beer Museum is a must-visit spot for beer enthusiasts located in Qingdao, China. This museum offers a place to learn about the history and production process of Qingdao beer, making it popular among both tourists and locals. The museum is housed in a historic building established in 1897, the birthplace of Qingdao beer. Inside, visitors can explore exhibitions featuring the raw materials and equipment used in beer production, as well as old advertisements and packaging, deepening their knowledge. There are also guided tours that allow visitors to see the beer-making process up close, providing an opportunity to fully appreciate the allure of beer. Additionally, the museum includes a tasting area where visitors can enjoy fresh Qingdao beer. The selection of beers is diverse, ranging from the classic Qingdao beer to limited editions and brews using local specialties, allowing for a variety of flavors to be savored. The Qingdao Beer Museum is not only a place to learn about the history of beer but also to experience the culture and environment of Qingdao. It is especially recommended for those interested in tourism and food culture. If you visit Qingdao, be sure to stop by!

They offer a wide selection of tours at different price ranges. You can also enjoy really fresh draft beer. I loved the crispness of each glass. Definitely worth a visit if you come to Qingdao.

Nice little museum showing how German brewers once brought their craft to China. It reflects a complex part of history, but it’s interesting to see what developed from it – today one of Asia’s biggest beer brands. Takes about one to two hours, and the beer tasting at the end is great, especially the freshly brewed, unfiltered draft beer. Worth a stop when you’re in Qingdao!
Tobias G — Google review
Absolutely great place to visit with lots of interesting exhibits and historical information. They also give free beers to paying visitors but the Q was quite long. The atmosphere was very boisterous and noisy with everyone enjoying themselves.

Not a fan of beer but Tsingtao Beer is so iconic, almost a synonym of Qingdao that I couldn't miss this museum. As its peak travel season now, tickets are in hot demand. The standard ticket includes entry to both Buildings A & B and 2 glasses of their beer. They also have tickets with escape game component. Building A is a showcase of the history and culture of the brewery, starting with its roots from Germany, established by the Germans in 1903. Building B is a showcase of the production facility. At the mid point of Building B is where I was served the first glass of Tsingtao Beer and a packet of their beer nuts. There's a cute interactive table in the middle where if you place your glass on it, it'll randomly match you with someone else who does the same across the table, with a message that says Cheers or Drink Up. At the end of Building B is their merchandise store, where I got a scoop of their 原浆啤酒 gelato (¥32, nice, I liked it). They also sell a wide range of merch here from tees to magnets, keychains, pin, to nuts, chips and of course their beer. As you exit the store, you enter their bar and restaurant where you pick up the 2nd glass of beer. Outside the museum there's also the 1903 Bakery, where they sell bread made with the same yeast used in their beer. Next to it is the same gelato ice cream (for those who want an ice cream without going into the museum). Overall I think this place has great potential to be really enjoyable but I must say amongst all the breweries I've visited, this is my least favourite. Purely because of the crowds. Despite the control on numbers with capped ticketing, the entire museum is filled with so many people it felt stuffy in the buildings, despite the air conditioning. It was hard to read the captions with people blocking your view constantly, not to mention even harder to take proper photos. There wasn't enough seating to properly enjoy my beer. But given how iconic the brand is, I don't know if you can truly say you've visited Qingdao if you didn't make it here.

A must visit when you travel to Qingdao. Very interesting to learn about the history of Qingdao beer - beer is very closely intertwined with the city's identity and culture after all. Exhibits are generally very clear and nicely laid out, with both English and Chinese explanations. Section A is on the history of the brewery, while section B explains the beer making process. Best to book the tickets online in Wechat ahead of time, you can also purchase tour packages. The standard ticket alone includes 2 small pints of draft beer and a packet of nuts. If you prefer to read the exhibits at your own pace, theres no need for a tour guide, as it will be quite rushed and you have to move in a large crowd from room to room.

Mountain peak
Laoshan Mountain is a stunning destination in Qingdao, China. The area boasts a picturesque urban landscape with red roofs and green trees set against the backdrop of the blue sea and sky. Visitors can enjoy the magnificent coastline and rolling fairyland of Laoshan Mountain. The city features diverse architecture, predominantly in a European continental style, as well as modern facilities for vacation, conventions, and exhibitions.
Pretty decent hike up and very nice views as well.
Lucas L — Google review
Laoshan was both a great place and disappointment at the same time. The view was amazing but the path was only staircases up and down, very boring and nothing close to hiking. We followed the path all around the mountain, but the best view was from the top at the first gate.
Giovanni B — Google review
Lovely day trip to Mount Laoshan. We started off by taxi who brought us to the ticket office area. From there a shuttle bus brings you to the foot of the Laoshan scenic area. Before we went hiking, we noticed a lot of people searching for crabs and shrimps between the rocks on a nearby beach. We joined in on the fun for a good 2 hours before deciding we should start our hike upwards. We bought the local Laoshan Coke drink (highly recommend! has a licorice-like taste) and climbed up the many stair the entry area has. After about 70 minutes of intense hiking we reached the cable cart area and took a cart to the next area, from where we continued after a refreshment. We went as far as we could go, running into a small monastey with local monks (also a nice photo spot). We took a different road back and walked nearly 3 hours across the water, eventually passing one of the bigger waterfalls in the area and when it became dark fireflies came out. We did not encounter any dogs or monkeys, as the sign suggests. Only a couple friendly cats. Highly recommend to visit for a full day trip. Make sure you bring mosqito repellant and plenty of water.
Jurian — Google review
A mountain with an awesome view on top, cable car is recommended to go on top as the hike up the mountain isn't very eventful. The cable car did have very nice views. After getting off the cable car, you have to hike up to 30 min. to experience the best view but it's definitely worth the tiring hike. Beautiful place indeed.
Kevin G — Google review
Perfect day trip from Qingdao. Very pleasant and scenic area with untainted natural beauty. Recommend using the cable cars to reach the top of the mountain. The area is also famous for locally grown tea - make sure to get some on the way.

it's a must visit place when you're in qingdao. you can take gondola to go up the mountain, but you still need to hike a little bit. you also need to climb through dark cave. so make sure to get prepared.
Listiani H — Google review
This was the first tour we took during our trip to China and I cannot think of a better place to start. The history in Laoshan is almost as overwhelming as the beautiful landscapes you will see during your visit. There are a few places within Laoshan that you will not be able to photograph due to religious beliefs (which is completely understandable) but trust me, you can fill you SD card with everything else you see and photograph. Do yourself a favor and do not overlook this gem of a destination during your next visit to China.
Brian V — Google review
I lived in Qingdao for a number of years. The city has a lot in interesting history both local and from international German visitors earlier in the last and previous centuries. My preferred hiking place most weekends was LaoShan (or Mount Lao) as shown on Google. There are so many hidden tracks from eras gone by that you can stumble upon. A typical hike would span 30 kms and last from 6 am to 4 pm at a good pace. The mountain is vast given its typography and huge marble rocks - which were a great resource for the Germans to build infrastructure.

It is usually busy. . . but not so crowded that you can't enjoy the water and your time there. The sand is nice and they have it pretty well sectioned off the areas that are safe to swim in. It's definitely not a very private beach, but I think it's worth visiting.
Arthur W — Google review
Very nice and clean beach, a little small but very pretty. Great view of the city. It's located directly next to a park and a big street, although the traffic can't be heard. The beach is easily reachable via bus or subway. It's also a great place to just sit and watch the big ships entering and leaving the harbor. It's also possible to take jetski rides or go parasailing with a boat. One section seems devoted to fitness, so you'll see a bunch of people working out directly on the beach. When we were visiting, no shop was open, so maybe bring snacks and drinks. There seems to be a kfc, but again: closed for no reason. Worth a visit!
