Gardens
The Japanese Garden in Hasselt is a serene and picturesque oasis, offering visitors a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. As the largest of its kind in Europe, this beautifully crafted landscape features charming stone bridges spanning peaceful ponds teeming with graceful koi fish. Visitors can immerse themselves in Japanese culture through various events such as tea tastings and floral workshops.
The garden looks small on the maps, but you can easily spend at least 2 hours wandeling between the water streams and the Japanese trees and blossoms. You don't really need to book a ticket online. We were a group of 4. We couldn't find any available ones online, but we managed to buy them at the entrance

Beautiful place, especially during springtime. The nature is stunning and the atmosphere is very peaceful. Everything is well designed, clean, and professionally maintained. You can really feel the spirit of Japan throughout the garden, making the experience even more special. Within the complex, there is also a traditional Japanese house, which is very interesting to visit. There is plenty of space to walk around, relax on benches, and enjoy the sun. All in all, I highly recommend this place to everyone.
Nemanja G — Google review
Such a beautiful and peaceful place. Perfect to escape from the busy daily life. The garden is well-kept, with gorgeous trees, little bridges, koi fish, and a charming tea house. Walking around feels so calming, like you've stepped into another world. Perfect for a quiet stroll, taking pictures, a family picnic, or just sitting by the water and relaxing. I could stay here for hours and I'm planning to visit it again soon.
Ysm S — Google review
Beautiful japanese garden, largest in Europe! Suitable for families with strollers. There are some pop-up food trucks with japanese food inside the gardens and some japanese vending machines too. It appears you get free entrance if dressed in a kimono or if you wish to take wedding pictures in the garden. But prices are already reasonable (7 eur). Parking is ample and free
Nuno L — Google review
We visited the Japanese Garden in Hasselt right at the peak of the blossom season, and it was absolutely breathtaking! 🌸✨ The stunning pink and white cherry blossoms created a magical, serene atmosphere, perfect for a peaceful stroll and unforgettable photos. 📸 The garden is beautifully designed, with charming bridges, tranquil ponds filled with koi fish, and picturesque pathways that make you feel like you've stepped into Japan itself. 🌿🐟
Emily L — Google review
A Japanese themed garden in Hasselt. There is an entrance fee of 7 euro. Inside are Japanese style houses, stream with koi fishes and cherry trees. Its quite beautiful when the cherry trees are blossoming. They sell Japanese food inside but a bit overpriced. It takes just an hour to tour the place. Might not be worth it if there are no cherry blossoms.
Romeo — Google review
Went on 1rst of May. A little bit crowded near the waterfalls however the picknickzone is perfect to enjoy and relax. Nice place to visit. Parking too small, I went to the Park H, max 10 minutes by foot from the japanese gardens.
Marie C — Google review
Beautiful gardens created in authentic Japanese style. Small rivers, bridges, waterfalls, Koi fish, tee houses, cherry trees, moss. The highlight, at least for kids, is the walk along the large waterfall on rocks above the water. The only downsides is that it's a bit close to the road so you sometimes hear the cars in the distance which breaks the idyllic atmosphere. And we would have liked it to be even larger, to have even more to explore and enjoy. But absolutely worth the visit and the small entrance fee.

Herkenrode Abbey, located just a few miles from the city of Hasselt in Belgium, is an impressive complex with a history spanning over 800 years. The buildings that still stand today date back to the 16th-18th century and were once part of the richest and largest women's abbey in the area. The abbey offers an intriguing experience center where visitors can learn about the mysterious wealth of the nuns and their activities.
A truly lovely spot to explore! The garden features a rich variety of plants and beautifully maintained paths through peaceful nature. There’s also a museum within the complex, and a café where you can enjoy a drink or lunch. A lovely destination for a relaxing day out – highly recommended! Plus, there’s a large free parking area right in front.

Very nice outdoor space with a good bar lounge self service restaurant, a museum and botbical garden to visit. In the summer great place for events or picnics. Its on cross roads of several bycile routes. For wheelchair there are facilities. For the small kids there are special routed with info. Overall a great site to spend some hours you learn someting good view with a nice drink.

We are here to do schatten van vlieg with the children. They were ao existed and also us. The place and the story in this museum are amazing. If you are a museum person then this place should be one of your places to visit. The people that work there are friendly. There are rol chairs acces also. From the parking place to the place is far. But it is worthy. The toilet is clean and there is toilet dor little ones too. For the museums you can choose a variety of guides. You can use earphones or just reading the book. Outside, there is chapel that builds with iron, and it's beautiful. And also there is another art place. An illusion art. This place is recommended to visit.

Top musiscants. Bad chairs , Nice setting, but it could played somewhat louder through Some kind of dolby surround system Some of the music whats to quiet

Beautiful historical abbey on the outskirts of Hasselt. Perfect location for a nice walk (even from the car park to the abbey you already pass some cows) or bicycle ride. There is also a nice bar/restaurant with an outdoor playground (our boys loved the place!), so the abbey and surrounding area are definitely worth a visit. The onsite bookshop was also very nice offering a variety of books for children of all ages...
Harald C — Google review
In general, it has been a delightful evening, and the music performance was absolutely fantastic. However, sitting at the far back, I couldn't help but wish for a method to distribute the sound more evenly, reaching all the corners of the venue.
Manuel G — Google review
Herkenrode Abbey has a small museum, (herb) garden, and organizes exhibitions. There also is a small playground. The surrounding countryside is great for walks, with several walking paths of different length, but there is a lot of noise from the nearby highway.

Beautiful old setting for a medieval festival, restored with care and plenty of modern amenities for visitors. The childrens bookshop is especially impressive.

Amusement park
Nestled in the heart of Hasselt, Plopsa Indoor Hasselt is Belgium's pioneering indoor theme park, having opened its doors in 2005. This vibrant destination spans nearly a hectare and boasts over 20 attractions that are sure to delight young families. The park features thrilling rides inspired by beloved Studio 100 characters such as Mega Mindy, Piet Piraat, and Bumba. For those looking for some outdoor fun, there's also a playground and climbing mountain to explore.
This place is amazing! No wait times for rides at all! Really fun attractions, and clean. We literally had the best day of our lives here. Perfect for a 4 year old.
Rebecca M — Google review
Not a big place , but loads of options to keep a 4 year old busy for 3-4 hours. There are options to eat inside. You do pay extra for the parking around €12.5 . We were able to find discounted tickets on groupon
Abhi — Google review
We had such an amazing day at Plopsa Indoor! The kids had a blast playing non-stop, and honestly, I had just as much fun watching them enjoy every moment. We were lucky to go on a super hot day, so the outdoor water fountain area was perfect — they could cool down and play for hours. Everything was clean, safe, and so much fun. Definitely a place we’ll be visiting again soon!
Guljennet T — Google review
We took our granddaughters to this place. I worried when we arrived because most children seemed to be the age of 4-6. Our granddaughters are 8 and 11. They however had a wonderful time. They loved the swings and the rollercoaster. The falling tower was also a big success, and so was the rocking ship. We were there for 6 hours, so that should tell you something. 😉 We had lunch, but I would recommend taking your own food. The place was clean, and although it was inside, the noise level was very tolerant. There are water fountain outside that the children can play in, so take a towel and a set of dry clothes. Our granddaughters were disappointed that they could not play on the water. We had a wonderful time, even if it is supposed to be more for younger children, our granddaughters had a blast.
Christine J — Google review
This is a upscale indoor playground at best, and you pay the plopsa brand premium. We had to pay 29 euros per ticket at the door, and we where disappointed in the vallue we received for it. The playground is nice, but not that nice, within 2 hours our daughter was done with everything and we where out again. The rollercoaster is a nice feature, bit for the price you better go to the real plopsaland outdoor, as there at least you get some valkue for money. It would be nice if either only 1 parent has to pay or parents go in free like on all the regular indoor playground. 2 stars for the luxere setup but not worth the money...
Onno H — Google review
Very nice place, easy parking and friendly staff.Family-friendly park, themed around Maya and Bumba characters, I'd say more oriented towords younger kids. There's a fast-food restaurant on site which, as expected, is pretty expensive for what you get. Parking costs 12.5 euro, for lockers you have to pay 6 euro. My daughter and I enjoyed every minute. Definitely worth it surely recommend it.
Tarintata — Google review
On a week day (Wednesday) perfect if you don’t have to wait in line for anything! Perfect for kids from 100cm tall they can get in all of the attractions and as an adult you can too and some of them are cool! We loved it!!
Mayra C — Google review
It’s a good place for young children to play, although the ticket price is a little bit high.regarding this small place. You can buy online and find some good bargains. Food is expensive and you can take your own food which isn’t a big issue. The souvenir toys are too expensive.

Museums
Bokrijk Open Air Museum, located between Genk and Hasselt, is a popular destination for travelers seeking to immerse themselves in the rich history and culture of Belgium. The museum features period buildings and furniture that showcase village life before WWI, offering visitors a glimpse into the architectural design of the nineteenth century. Additionally, the outdoor playground at Bokrijk provides entertainment for all ages with giant slides, jungle gyms, and adaptive equipment for disabled children.
This place is amazing, they should have gotten 5 stars. It's huge, full of fun stuff to do and see, for kids and all age. The ticket price, resto price, and workshop price are very friendly. We visited yesterday with our two kids , and in 1/2 day did not finish to see everything because we wanted to spend time in every stops we saw. I will surely come back
Puji K — Google review
When someone tells me "open air museum" I think of a small open farm-type area with 4 or 5 houses and some old machinery depicting what the old times were. Bokrijk Open-Air Museum exceeded my expectations! With over 150 authentic buildings, it's a vast and immersive experience that transports you back in time. From historic homes and farms to working watermills and traditional crafts, there's so much to explore. The attention to detail and sensory experiences make it a standout destination. A must-visit for history buffs, architecture enthusiasts, and anyone looking for a unique Family day out in Belgium! Parking is 5 eur, entrance fee 17 eur pp, and very much worth it. Don't skip the bread tasting at the bakery ;)
Nuno L — Google review
Bokrijk Open Air Museum Bokrijk is an extraordinary open-air museum where you can step back in time and truly feel the atmosphere of past centuries. Walking through the vast grounds surrounded by beautiful nature, you get the impression that life from hundreds of years ago comes alive before your eyes. What stands out most is the authentic architecture – old cottages, farmhouses, and craftsmen’s workshops – everything is faithfully recreated to reflect the spirit of traditional villages. Every detail has been carefully designed, allowing visitors to genuinely experience what everyday life used to be like. Apart from its historical value, Bokrijk also captivates with its landscapes. The surrounding nature, picturesque views, and peaceful atmosphere make a visit here not only a history lesson but also a wonderful opportunity to relax. It’s definitely a place worth visiting – both for adults, who will appreciate the richness of culture and tradition, and for children, who can see history come to life in an engaging way. Bokrijk is a journey through time that leaves lasting memories.

Interesting and super nice road into history. Lots of things to see and do for families, also small ones. Roads are all accessible. Workshops for kids are very nice. Take into account that it takes 3-4 hours do it at all at minimum. At the entrance though the weed could be cut. Very nice place to spend a sunday with the family.
R — Google review
Awesome open air museum. All the information boards are available in English. Only a few videos in Dutch were not available in English. We met one awesome worker (a baker) who spoke very good English who we talked with for a while. The site is huge. We probably saw a little over half of it on our day there. I especially liked the 60s section. Be prepared for lots of walking.
Corey D — Google review
This place is a little (big) gem. Great for a fun day out with the kids with plenty to do and space to run around without costing too much (€37 for a family). We were there for 4 hours and didn't manage to see it all. Lots of playing games and exploring the old ways of life. There's also an amazing separate huge park/playground in the site (free). Parking is a reasonable €5. Really happy we came. Had a great time
Dave T — Google review
A great place to spend your weekend! At first I thought it would be just another boring museum, but it turned out to be really interesting. We really enjoyed seeing different master classes like how to make ropes, oils from the flaxseeds and nuts. We even tried their local bakery goods, and they were delicious 👍🏻 We also loved playing games, it was really fun and entertaining. During our walk between the houses, we saw not just the architecture of the houses, but also the everyday life of local peasants like a teacher, a priest, a housewife and a gardener. It was really fun to watch their acting. Besides that, there are lots of live animals, all are very well cared for. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. The parking costs 5€, and the horse carriage ride 5€ per person. The price of the ticket is 17€ and it is definitely worth it.
Diana S — Google review
Lovely experience, we were here for an afternoon as left it rather late, in not the best of weather. An entire day would have been better. We spoke english and found it easy to navigate. The restaurant served lovely food in nice surroundings. The whole family got a quick go at spinning a clay pot. I read some of the more negative reviews out of curiosity and honestly they're unrecognisable to the place I visited which was freindly with a number of interesting exhibits. To note visited with autistic child and found it friendly and welcoming with enough to engage, the site is quite large so plan accordingly.

Cathedral St. Quintinus, also known as Hasselt Cathedral, is a Catholic church located in the heart of Hasselt. This magnificent place of worship boasts a Gothic architectural design with a soaring tower, replacing the old Romanesque church that once stood there. It acquired cathedral status in 1967 and features a stunning interior that is highly recommended for visitors to explore. The city of Hasselt itself is praised for its pleasant atmosphere and cleanliness, making it an ideal destination for tourists.
What a majestic cathedral 🙏

Beautiful Catholic church. Worth visiting this place in the city center. All recommendations.
Nemanja G — Google review
In August 2023 it's under renovation on the outside, but it didn't impact the visit inside at all. There are many paintings around, both on the walls and standing at man height, some sculptures and a massive organ where you would expect it to be. There was some choral music being played which helped creating an ambience, but the church lacked charm and seemed rather new. Some kind of explanation was totally missing as well. Would still go in if visiting Hasselt since there is no ticket/entrance fee.

What a treat - flawless service, great food, and interesting wine and beer pairings. We booked in last minute as a special treat and had the 5 course meal on a Monday night. I had the wine pairing, my partner had the beer pairing. Very good value too - we left feeling very full and had to ask the staff to pour less generously by the end of the meal!! Everything very fresh, I’d love to go back in a different season and see what delicious surprises come out of the kitchen.

The restaurant's interior exudes a welcoming and intimate ambiance, creating a cozy atmosphere for guests. The food served at Ogst is superb, with abstract combinations of flavors and delicate tastes that leave diners in awe. Despite the fact that food is very good, we had to stay 3 hours and 45 minutes to the whole meal. Which for me is a long time to stay in a restaurante. We had to wait 25 minutes for each course. Not good hold the costomer almost 4 hours.

Fine dining and wining at this nice restaurant. The interior gives a warm and cosy atmosphere and the food was excellent. Service was very good but lacks some authenticity, personality and passion for this kind of establishment. Hence, no five stars. Four of us recently accidentally stumbled upon this place on a daytrip to Hasselt. Amazing food, upscale, but very friendly and helpful staff and relaxed atmosphere! We treated ourselves to the 4 course menu (2 appetizers, main, dessert). Quality of the food and wow factor of the bold but also down to earth choices of dishes are certainly in line with the 50 Euro pricetag. My girlfriend said that she never tasted a better zucchini in her life! I fell in love with the tiny beet cubes in raspberry sauce. All four of us agreed that this was the best restaurant visit we had had in a very long time!

The food itself is very good with some interesting combinations of flavors. The wine pairings were not bold but clever and complemented the dishes. Unfortunatly, when the dessert came, the lemongrass ice cream was already melting. In the end we received the coffee delights a good 5 minutes after our coffee was already finished. This is unfortunate and can easily be avoided. The crew is still young and while talented, a bit nonchalant. Don't let these stupid things happen when serving this level of food and asking these prices, guys.
