Park
Nature & Parks
Crawfordsburn Country Park is a serene coastal haven that beautifully blends nature with recreation. This picturesque park features an array of wooded trails and a spacious beach, making it perfect for leisurely strolls or energetic hikes. Visitors can explore various paths, including one that leads to a stunning waterfall, all while enjoying breathtaking views of the ocean and surrounding landscapes. The park is dog-friendly, attracting many pet owners year-round who appreciate the well-maintained trails and ample waste bins.
Visited 30/12/2024, as you can see from the map picture attached to the review there is lots of parking sites across the country park. Once you park up you can then access the country park and its various pathways which take in the scenery and features. The pathways are accessible and family friendly. If you go onto the sand areas there is both firm sand and the soft sand, which can be sloppy for younger kids. The sand is covered in areas with seaweed and the areas of sand are generally/mostly clean and tidy, on my particular visit I only came across two broken pieces of glass bottles so do be careful with kids/pets etc. I do recommend you visit this country park if you’re able to get to it as it’s worth the walk, as we ended up doing about 4.6km in total but you can do a lot more. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Lovely park, great big walk with the dog. It has a lovely little cafe and nice, clean toilets. Most sunny days you can also find an ice cream van near the beach! You can choose to walk several different routes, woods or beach or a mixture of both.
Kanayol — Google review
This is a wonderful green space welcoming to all with beautiful small sand and shingle beaches on the shore of Belfast Lough. The Park is welcoming to dogs and there are places to get water if needed. The restaurant cafe and toilet facilities in the Welcome centre are clean and pleasant to use. On a sunny day the terrace outside the cafe is a perfect place to have a cup of coffee. There are many walks lined up on the maps around the centre and the walk along the beach is amazing definitely worth the trip out there for a full day.

Crawfordsburn country park is a forest park with convenient access to the Crawfordsburn beach and a short walk from Helen's bay. We visited here for a stroll and were not disappointed, the views are beautiful and the paths well maintained. There is a visitor's centre with a cafe and lots of picnic benches for those with a BBQ or picnic. Overall we loved our trip here and will be back as soon as the weather permits! 😊

Beautiful place, beach and forest park with a waterfall. The cafe food was amazing too there was a queue to get in but it was worth it
Laura Ł — Google review
Great place place to visit and has different trails, park and coastal. The car park is free and opens at 9 am (currently). There's a gate blocking access before 9 am. One way in and out, on the way out, there's a bit of a hill with a bump that has spikes on it! I was scared for my car, but it's to prevent people from coming the wrong way. The spikes go in as you drive over it, I wasn't convinced, but it was all ok! Toilets in the car park are unisex. There are also toilets in the visitor centre. There's a cafe too but haven't visited it. You could easily spend the day here and it's free with loads of parking spaces, great walk by the water and great walk through the forest. Took me a while to find the waterfall. You need to walk up to where you first see parking spaces before you get to the car parks, or you can walk up through the forest. Great time.

This is a real hidden gem of a place. Most importantly, the food is brilliant. We are talking restaurant quality fare - as good or better than most restaurants I’ve been to. Service is always excellent and prices very reasonable. This place is so good I would go out of my way if in Bangor or Hollywood to eat in the Woodlands Cafe instead.

One of our favourite places for a family walk. We love coming here for a walk to the waterfall then some yummy lunch in the cafe. 100% recommend!

Nature & Parks
Nestled on the southern side of Bangor Marina, Pickie Fun Park is a delightful destination for families seeking a day filled with laughter and adventure. Once an outdoor swimming pool, this vibrant park now boasts an array of attractions that cater to young children and their parents alike. From pedal swan boats gliding across the water to the charming narrow-gauge railway known as the Pickie Puffer, there's no shortage of fun activities.
Visited the pickie pumpkin patch on Sunday 27th Oct. It was fantastic fun. My 6 year old grandson loved every minute of it. From choosing his pumpkin and getting it carved, to petting a snake. The exploris pop up aquarium was very informative and the guy who was telling us all the facts made it fun too which the kids enjoyed. My grandson got on all the free rides, we all got on the pickie puffer and the swans and then when we went into the cafe for a warm drink and snack, there was a lady dressed up and singing spooky songs. She was fantastic. All in all it was a brilliant day and i would definitely return!!!
Gillian C — Google review
Visited this place with our young child and he loved it. They have the ride on swans which is brilliant fun, kids water roller coaster, other kids rides, a train, arcade water shooting game and a water splash area. We only got snacks from the restaurant but it seemed to have a decent menu and plenty of seating. Reason for 4 star was the changing rooms appeared to be locked the entire time we were there. Ample toilets and a good baby changing room.
BulletProofK9T C — Google review
Anytime my kids are down they love the place, always just pay the all day pass £15 each gets them on every multiple activities, multiple times. All they need to do is join back of a que. The splash park bit when it's decent weather they probably love the most. The cafe/food shop really does great food. I actually love the beef burger, bacon and cheese and the chips are real chips. 5/5
Justin O — Google review
Great place. Kids loved it. I noticed most of the staff are like teenage years, mostly friendly but one that works over at the little ducks on the water, he just didn't care about the people or the fact he was there plus a little rude to the kids. The park needs updated big time
Carla S — Google review
Like Bangor itself, this place seems to have been allowed to be run down. Not many visitors in the summer-usually full. Cafe staff seem to not care anymore, ice cream hut run out of most things. Swans need a good clean.

Very nice place for children's and adults I recommend 👌

Its an ok day out but it has definitely got some issues, its too expensive for what it is, for example the "log flume" takes maybe a minute to do (if not less) and costs £4, the playground has too many items just fenced off as they are broken, a lot of staff seem like they really don't want to be there and the food in the cafe was poor quality and badly cooked not mention the expensive strategically placed temptations for the child. It seems the high prices are not being used to provide proper maintenance and quality.
Clark F — Google review
Such fantastic service from James at the cafe at Pickie Park. My child has multiple allergies and he was extremely accommodating and made sure there was a substantial meal my child could enjoy. What a great experience when someone with allergies is not made to feel that they are being an inconvenience. Well done to the cafe staff team.

Public beach

Beaches
Ballyholme Beach is a stunning coastal gem that offers an inviting escape for everyone, from families with young children to dog walkers and beach enthusiasts. The beach boasts golden sands and crystal-clear waters, perfect for safe swimming as the water remains shallow even far out. Visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of the expansive shoreline while taking leisurely strolls along the seafront. For those traveling in motorhomes, there's convenient free parking available near the yacht club, making it easy to access this beautiful spot.
On a sunny day, and particularly at the weekend, you would meet walkers, joggers, hikers; 'sitters' on the bench or in the car at the car park; paddle boarding, wind surfing and yachting enthusiasts ... all age categories are enjoying the exciting blend of humans and nature carried away in the freshness of air so specific for this beach. The coffee van would be parked close by to the car park and to the small children's playground, and it is stationed there mostly? during the peak time of the day. Public toilets are also on the site /closed in the evening and night/ A spoiling choice - either for "human interaction" or for an absolute escape from it should direct your walk and footwear. If you wish for an absolute whisper of wilderness, put on your waterproof and ankle high footwear. As you continue in the direction away from Bangor, you reach the end of the beach and then you cross a turning gate. Here, you would be limited by the tide in or tide out. Regardless the tide, you can always walk the natural path, though. It can be muddy. If the tide is out , you can go for "off roading". While off roading - hopefully, you slow down and turn your head - you will discover a truly captivating view - the beach diving into the glittering sea framed by picturesque Bangor buildings and floating clouds. Ballyholme beach changes with clouds and tides. It is always different and has always something to offer. Romantic, dramatic - photographers must love it! Sunsets are simply hugging. Early mornings seem to belong more to the dog walkers and joggers, and it is very quiet. This beach offers a truly liberating walk, and in addition, people are always smiling!

Very nice beach. Quite small, has soft sand on one side. Small carpark and grass area with swings. No handy shops or toilets though. Smooth path down to beach suitable for prams and wheelchairs.
Rachel M — Google review
Beautiful beach. You walk out over 100 meters in to the sea and still not be waist deep, my daughter loved that. The sea is clear as anything and there is usually a coffee van and ice cream van. Lovely clean sand and even on the hottest day it doesn’t get too busy. There’s also a car park right next to it or side roads close by you can park on. Dogs are also allowed, we were very amused by a dog on his paddle board! Lovely little day out.
Jayne O — Google review
Love it. Big long promenade and great to enjoy on a sunny day around tk the yacht club and back again. Hard to beat.
T S — Google review
Love this place, about 10 minutes away from Bangor at most. Its an excellent walk and there's always something to see either out on the water or going on the beach. Parking is good there is a car park but there's on street parking further up and it brings you out in the middle. Go one way you have a greener walk go the other way and you can see the colourful houses in their rows. Just a wonderful relaxing walk or somewhere to watch the waves roll in.
Kieran M — Google review
First time here today and it's absolutely gorgeous, the views go on and on, the sand is golden, no litter at all and acres of space, also the water is extremely shallow, went out 50-100 metres and was just about passed my knee absolutely loved it
Mark W — Google review
Very clean beach. Always love coming here. If you have a motorhome you can park up in the carpark before the yacht club for free, it's right in the seafront so great views. From there you can walk the whole way around to the beach. There is normally an ice cream van and coffee truck parked in the carpark too.

Nestled within the historic Bangor Castle, the North Down Museum is a captivating destination that offers a deep dive into local history spanning from the Bronze Age to contemporary times. Visitors can explore fascinating rotating exhibits, including an engaging Viking display complete with a replica longhouse that invites exploration. The museum caters to all ages, ensuring children are entertained while also addressing current topics like climate change through informative exhibitions.
Nice museum! Great to learn history.

Came for the Vikings, but as usual fell into awe at the sacrifice of our veterans on this VE Day. The incredible collection provided by Sir John Newell Jordan is breathtaking as well (right upstairs from VE Day 80). Viking area is filled with history as well, sadly the blood eagle was real, and must be the worst way to die in history. 😳 Vikings were tough, jeeze. Lovely gift shop!

Great place to visit.. amazing welcoming staff and the entry is free of charge..The museum is situated in a lovely park where you can take an additional walk. Also the coffee place has a nice atmosphere and great coffee. Really worth seeing.

Such a great museum to visit when in Bangor. Lots of information and the staff were a wealth of knowledge! Big thanks to Steven who gave us lots of information on what to do and see plus was a great photographer for some fun photos.

Interesting museum in part of Bangor Castle which focuses on local history from bronze age to modern day. There's a nice exhibition on vikings and there's a replica of a viking longhouse to walk through. There's plenty to keep children interested and the climate change exhibition shows that the museum is keeping up to date with the latest topics of interest. There's a lovely cafe with indoor and courtyard seating and a great little shop to visit. The cafe is open everyday. The museum is free to visit and open everyday except Monday. When you've finished at the museum, you can walk around the Castle Park and the Castle walled garden.

I visited this museum with my 2-year-old daughter three weeks ago, and we had a lovely time. The space is clean, well-organized, and filled with educational exhibits. While my daughter was a bit young to grasp the war displays, she really enjoyed some of the artwork and had a fantastic time upstairs reading the children’s books and drawing with the materials provided. The staff were absolutely wonderful—friendly, attentive, and even helped me carry the pram up the stairs, which was much appreciated.

Visited here again to see another exhibition that was free entry. It is great to view local talent and I only wish we could see more of these events on display. Well done to the crafters involved and to the museum for a wonderful decision

Nestled in the heart of Bangor, Ward Park is a delightful escape that beautifully blends nature and recreation. This landscaped haven features serene small lakes where ducks paddle about, creating a picturesque scene perfect for leisurely strolls or family outings. The park boasts an array of amenities including a vibrant playground filled with swings and roundabouts, as well as sporting facilities like tennis courts and football pitches.
I love this place good chillout spot great coffee shop park life in the grounds lovely walks feed the birds and generally has it all. Plus a brand new play park.
Manona M — Google review
Lovely area of Bangor with many happy childhood memories for me. Area has stood the test of time quite well. Water quality in the river is very poor, and some of the paths at the waters edge are heavily fouled by the resident flock of geese. The new Playpark was an immediate hit with the grandchildren, a great asset, and very popular. New toilets yet to be built.
Anthony G — Google review
Really lovely wee park for a stroll and to feed the ducks. Loved the new sensory garden and bug hotel giant letters. Always a good summer programme of music in the park at the band stand here and the new play park is a great addition. Duck feeder at the water with contactless payment is genius. The only reason it loses a star is the sheet amount of gigantic duck/goose poo all over the pathways. Some of them are as big as a big poo and end up with shoes covered in poop! Lovely new cafe with indoor/outdoor seating and some kids games another great addition.
Lynsey R — Google review
Ward Park is a delightful park for a stroll on the edge of Bangor town. At this time of the year a park showing the colours of autumn.
Willaim — Google review
A very pleasant place to walk and relax 🧘‍♀️. We stopped at a food market day. There was sun ☀️, music 🎶, many families with cheerful children 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 , and food 🍲. Extremely nice to try new things and tastes. The park has an exhibition of birds: small birds, peacocks and hens and roosters (Pictures below). The park is maintained, but not quite. The pools where the ducks swim are full of garbage, the water is extremely dirty. Which makes an unpleasant impression. But the duckz are friendly and hungry (in this water, food is hard to find in my opinion)...
Yani T — Google review
Great park to walk your dog or let your dog walk you. 😉😃The addition of the new area means there are now two play areas for kids and adult kids of course.😃 Dozens of geese and ducks which really add to the lovely relaxed atmosphere. Great wee cafe 'Parklife' as well. It has free gigs on Sundays during the summer hosting very decent bands with really big crowds giving a great atmosphere. So if you are visiting Bangor or live there this is a great park to visit and bring your wee furry friend.

Called in here with my son. Walked around to the aviary to look at all the birds and ducks. The park is well looked after, clean and tidy. I love the duck feeding station, £1 by credit card and it provides you with food for the ducks.

Came here for NYE dinner. The first time we have been here and it was great. The service was brilliant and the food was fantastic as well. Pork Belly, Christmas Dinner, Chicken Burger & Pan fried cod all excellent - and a bottle of Malbec to wash it all down. Great atmosphere and even though we only had the table for 2 hours this was no issues as they wanted to turn around tables as I imagine NYE is one of their busier services, all communicated very professionally and didn’t feel like we were made to rush! Thanks for a lovely evening to all the staff.

September 2025. Clearly it's our fav eating place in Bangor. Do book in advance!!! Service last night was first class. Just the right amount of attentive. They've changed their menu so it took me a while to decide which dish I wanted as there were a few I was able to choose from. I thoroughly enjoyed the Waldorf salad. Hubby had the roast beef. Definitely recommend The Ava when you're in town. Thank you. And we're back! Jan 2025. Caramelised onion tarte tatin. Really good. Hubby had chicken and chorizo paella. Both really good. Service spot on as always. I do recommend booking in advance. Don't assume it'll be quiet on a cold January Saturday!!! Update Nov 2024 Loved it. Good service and great food. Italian mixed beans con carne tonight. Super tasty. I do recommend booking in advance as it does be busy. Thank you 😊 Staying in Bangor again tonight. Googled to see where to eat, and had a nosey in through a few windows. Ended up at Ava - again! Third time now. And it certainly didn't disappoint! Friendly welcome. Managed to nab a table without a booking (only just!) Prompt service. Food was really good. I opted for the Halloumi grill, and my husband the steak sandwich. Other than several fatty bits on the steak our plates were cleared. Would've been good to have some form of 'green' on the plate along with the steak. Reasonably priced, other than dessert which was £6 for a ridiculously small portion. Tasty however! Four pints, two mains, one dessert = £56. Highly recommend. Again! 😁

The hotel features spacious rooms with bright bathrooms and lovely harbor views, along with easy access to nearby attractions like Belfast.
Everything about my stay. Even more so the staff were superb, I can name those I met .. Mandy who was just fantastic at reception , so kind and friendly and nothing was a bother. Anna in the bar was just an amazing worker, friendly, caring, and there for what ever I needed. And Olivia who was just the most amazing attentive, friendly, and what i will say well suited to her job, I can’t say enough positive feedback. Just to add all staff were great inwas just grateful to have had time to talk with those I have mentioned. Thank you all .

Stayed 3 nights there in October. Will definitely return for another visit. Easy free Parking. Nice large room with a really bright, spacious, bathroom and a view over the harbour and seafront. Just a couple of minor niggles about poor lighting and TV service in parts of the room, despite the large bay window. Great location, with easy access to Belfast (30 minutes away). Superb Restaurant for dinner and breakfast. Very friendly and accommodating staff.

It’s nice and cozy, but the food seems to be a miss for me every time I was there this year (very salty to a point I come out thirsty as nothing). Generally lovely staff, just very young and clearly not experienced. Great to bring your dog, nice atmosphere with the marina out the door. I might give the place a pass for a while though as I feel like I’m falling out of love with it as a „Sunday afternoon spot“.
Wroni — Google review
Usually go here for drinks but also been for several dinners and have to say. The menu always has something for everyone and the food is quality and tasty. I also find it quite endearing that I can bring my dog in and sit them beside while I have a drink. This inclusion is very much appreciated and I just wish more places did this. If you happen to be a Bangor local or stopping by in your travels, do stop in and check out this lovely spot.

We took the day off and went here for a birthday lunch. We firstly ordered a large glass of wine and a diet coke... the table we were sat at was dirty and had food all over it, the waitress left the drinks over and didn't clean table. Our food order was then taken.. We ordered fish & chips and the burger.. the waitress left our cutlery over and set them down on the dirty table, (wish I had taken a pic). After a while the phone rang beside our table and we overheard the woman on reception having an overly loud inappropriate conversation with the head chef on the phone, trying to calm her down, the receptionist was literally telling her to breath and take deep breaths etc beside us then saying " I know you've brought it up before time and time again but that kitchen is disgusting" and how they need outsiders to come in to do a deep clean in the kitchen. Then when the phone call ended we overheard the receptionist telling another member of staff that the chef standing in had sent the head chef a photo of the burgers in the kitchen and that the head chef had told him they were off and needed to be thrown out but he was going ahead and cooking them (for our order). We spoke to the woman on reception and told her to cancel our food order as we had overheard the phone conversation, she said she didn't blame us as the kitchen was stinking. We went to the bar to pay for.our drinks and it came to £16.50. When we question how it was so much for a coke and 1 glass of wine we were told the wine was a double as we had asked for a large glass. Customers should be made aware of this when ordering as it is usually standard in a bar to have a small and large glass on offer, and at no point were we offered a drinks menu or wine list. Don't visit unless you want food poisoning, poor service and over priced drinks.

Excellent place. Dog friendly ... The menu is quite large and good. Lots of attractive options. I would say prices are above average, but I think it is really worth it. The backyard is fantastic for sunny days. We'll definitely go again!

Excellent service from our female server who is worthy of mention, but alas I did not get her name. Will definitely be back. Thanks to all.

Really lovely, welcoming place, great food, great location, doggy friendly, fair prices. It was very busy when we went so perhaps our waitress was under pressure but she only brought a kid's menu when we'd already been seated for 20 minutes and were ready to order, but we'd already chosen from the adult menu and they were happy to do kids size portions, which is great. She then offered colouring in, which never arrived. Not too bad, we got by. Drinks etc a bit slow to arrive. So we'd go again but not at such a busy time.

Donegans is an exceptional Irish restaurant that cannot be praised enough. The service provided by the pleasant and helpful staff is truly outstanding. The food served here is simply divine, with each mouthful being delicious and unforgettable. The chef, Mr Paul Gray, ensures that every dish is prepared to perfection. Whether it's the melt-in-your-mouth sirloin or ribs, the quality of the food is unparalleled. The quick service further enhances the dining experience.
Had an awesome Sunday lunch here today. Turkey and Ham Roast with all the trimmings - just awesome. Really lovely staff looking after us. The quantity of food was enormous and so tasty. Perfect for a huge appetite! Excellent value for money. Would highly recommend!

We came here today for Sunday Lunch - a first time visit and it was absolutely excellent. We were served by a gentleman called Ivan who was just fantastic, a special thanks to him for such good service and a special thanks to the chefs as well for the superb food. We had the Sunday specials - chorizo with onion soup to start & also the sticky ribs. Then for the mains my wife and sister had the fish pie special, and I had the roast beef with a massive Yorkshire pudding! It was so tasty and extra gravy, horseradish and any extra drinks were dealt with so quickly, with no issues at all. To finish, the 3 of us shared the apple crumble which again was genuinely one of the best crumbles we’ve ever had. Such friendly service, real hearty home cooked food - what is not to love. Bangors little hidden gem when it comes to a Sunday lunch. Thanks again!

We found Donegans while walking around and we nearly didn't go in because it seemed a bit pricey for pub grub. What a mistake that would have been. Huge portions that are absolutely delicious. We made the mistake of ordering a starter each, which were a very good size, and then when our mains came we struggled to finish them. I had the roast rib of beef, which was presented beautifully, and the knife slid through the beef like butter. The giant Yorkshire pudding, mash, roast potatoes and veg were gorgeous and the extra gravy that was given without being asked for was very appreciated. The rest of our party found their food tasty, well presented and delicious. Would definitely recommend.

Very poor quality tasteless food. Apparently the Curry is very popular. If you want a curry go to Tuk Tuk and try a curry. Roast beef was just ok because it was probably bought in by the portion. Prawn cocktail poor. A meal for 2 no drinks £82. Go to Underground dinning and pay £100 for the best meal in Town. Ivan would be much better working somewhere that actually makes great food

Great choice of food, food was well cooked and tasted great. Staff were friendly and helpful . Weird atmosphere in restaurant, not an overly comfortable place to sit with no background music but instead the noise of a door banging loudly every 5 or 10 mins, the banging from the waitress making the coffees at the machine, and staff shouting across the restaurant to each other with instructions and questions eg 'how much is a pint of Guinness?' with the response yelled back from 4 tables away

Having been here a number of times and found the food good, portions on the larger size and service excellent, on this occasion I found the standard of the food being presented has dropped off. We ate off the lunch special which is served between 12 and 6pm and is good value. To start, battered mushrooms, they were served dripping in oil, consequently they were overbearing and I only managed two before being put off. My other half had deep fried brie, usually the cheese is runny, not this time, which set us up for two disappointing starters. Mains comprised of an 8oz sirloin steak, chips, mixed veg, onion/mushrooms on top and a boat of pepper sauce. Some of the chips were not cooked right through, the peppers sauce was watery, otherwise the rest was good, unfortunately the aforementioned ruined the mains experience. Not sure if this place has changed hands but it's not as good as it was, next time I'll drive on round to the Crawfordsburn Inn

First time I’d been here and not disappointed. It was a group dinner, 50 or so of us, and everything was delivered swiftly, all the mains were hot, all the puddings hot or cold as they should be, and everything looking as fresh as though it was the only meal they’d prepared. It was all delicious and very well cooked and presented. The atmosphere was beautifully calm for such a large area and the staff were so friendly and helpful. Although we were in a big group I felt as personally cared for and valued by the staff as though I was the only person there, and others in the group agree. Highly recommended, and a big thank you to all the lovely staff.

If you need a lovely space for a function do not hesitate. I Held my daughter's 18th birthday party in the room downstairs. The staff was very helpful and professional nothing was to much trouble. It was very private and comfortable. If your thinking of a function for any occasion definitely go and see this great place. You won't be disappointed.

Had early Saturday evening dinner here. Menu is very comprehensive but not great for vegetarians according to my brother. Food was ok but nothing special. Pavlova which is normally superb was average. Service was friendly and staff very quick to help and serve. Drinks come to table quickly after being ordered. Prices are normal and not expensive.

Had two meals here while on holiday. The fish and chips were amazing and the Guinness steak pie was even better! The staff were lovely as well. Hope to visit again one day.

Lasagne had no vegetables or tomato sauce to be found. The chicken was dry as sin. The servers were lovely, though. For shame that they charged us for the untouched food sent back. (Don't you lie, that path went straight to another table )

We had dinner here as we were visiting Belfast for a concert and were staying in Bangor. The whole experience was great from food to atmosphere to value and staff. The staff member, Julia, was exceptional and very friendly. We would return if there again.

We had a fantastic meal at Yak. Having worked with Nepalese people throughout my career and shared food with them often, I can verify the authenticity of the cuisine here. Service was fantastic and we will definitely be regular visitors. Look forward to sampling the new Cocktail menu and experiencing some live entertainment. Our new go-to in Bangor for North Indian Eating.

Seriously the best Indian food in this country. Staff are so so kind. Their options are amazing. Vegan selection is out of this world. Always a joy to order from here. Their tofu tikka masala and chickpea korma is an absolute go to.
