Art Museums
Located in Suginami, Tokyo, the Suginami Animation Museum is a must-visit for anime enthusiasts and newcomers alike. While Akihabara is often associated with anime culture, Suginami holds the roots of Japanese animation, boasting 138 studios in the area. The museum offers free admission and features a diverse collection of anime-related exhibits that trace the art form's rich history. Visitors can enjoy learning about Japanese animation through screenings of historical and popular works, as well as special exhibitions.
You will need to take a bus from the station or you are in for a long long walk, BUT well worth it. Japan always has so many of the usual tourist track events etc that are all worth finding out about and visiting, even if just to get away from the hyper tourist crowds. This gem features a history of anime and manga across 2 floors. Obviously, it is impossible to cover every genre and style, so it focuses on well known and loved anime and manga. They have free portable translation guides devices and some interactive elements and lots of photo ops. Well, well worth it.

Much better than the other nearby museum. Free admission. Friendly and helpful staff. Pictures allowed almost everywhere. Some English translation provided. English audio guide. Lots of hand on activities in addition to the character models and animation history. There was a place to do voice overs and an entire room dedicated to trying tracing and computer animation. Three stamps were available near the elevator on the third floor.

What an absolute honor to be able to visit this anime museum. The museum itself is so worth it that I would have paid to enter. Walking around reading about the history of anime was a great experience. There are many pieces that anime lovers would notice. They even have intractable areas that I recommend visiting. An easily recommended place to visit.

I had a wonderful time at the Suginami Animation Musuem today! It’s on the third floor of the building. You walk in towards the elevator which is on the left and go up! I’ve been so bummed with the weather lately… so much rain… but the staff were wonderful and extremely accommodating and kind. They brightened my day! The accessibility of the venue inside is also great. They had multi-language audio guide devices (English, Chinese, Korean, etc.) that were so informative and helpful. This audio device is pictured in my first photo below (yellow lanyard with the black pen-like device and green mat). You tap the pen on the mat at the number of the exhibit you were looking at and it would give you all sorts of good information and explanations about what you were seeing! Very cool. The hands on opportunities were another really important part of the experience too! You could make your own voice over dub as well as your own light box tracing or animation! It was extremely clean inside as well! The presentation of the information as well as the overall atmosphere was great. For a free museum, very impressive. Suginami ward information pamphlets, museum stamps and event posters were also available. Don’t miss the Namisuke (Suginami mascot) merchandise either… so cute!

Very educational without being draggy, super fun with a lot of interactive exhibits. Must visit for all animation fans. You can try your hand at voice acting, tracing, creating your own animation. And once you’re tired, pick an animation DVD and watch it in the library. 10/10 must visit. Best of all, it’s free of charge.
Nur N — Google review
It’s very small, probably wouldn’t have gone if not for the yuru camp exhibition. But that was nice, and the anime production drawings were very interesting to look at (but you can’t take photos of them)
David H — Google review
Nice little exhibition if you’re in the area. Lot’s of activities aimed at little kids.
Mariano — Google review
HIGHLY recommend the animation museum here. It is a little slice of anime heaven where you can learn about hand drawn animation techniques and the creation process. The staff were super friendly and they speak English as well. Definitely stop by and try your hang at drawing a few animation cells of your own. The best part about it is they offer the whole experience free!

The air tastes of quiet routine — antique shops dusted with time, coffeehouses filled with soft jazz. Locals greet one another without hurry, each day unfolding like a handwritten letter. The yellow line hums softly below, carrying commuters who still notice seasons and neighbors’ faces. Tourist Tip: Famous for antique stores and cozy cafés. (Translated by Google) Nishi-Ogikubo Station is a convenient station with good access to Shinjuku and Kichijoji, as it is a stop on the JR Chuo Line and Sobu Line. The station premises are relatively compact and have a calm atmosphere overall, making it an easy-to-use station not only for daily commuters and students, but also for nearby residents. The platform is on an elevated track and has two island platforms, with platforms 1 and 2 for local trains on the Chuo and Sobu Lines, and platforms 3 and 4 for rapid trains on the Chuo Line. However, rapid trains pass through on weekends and holidays, so caution is required when using the Chuo Line. Safety is also taken into consideration, with platform doors installed to prevent falls. The electronic bulletin boards and announcements are easy to see, and the boarding directions are clear. There is only one ticket gate, and it is designed to allow exit in two directions, the south exit and the north exit. Basic facilities such as the convenience store "NewDays", coin lockers, Midori no Madoguchi, and ATMs are available around the ticket gate, making the station very convenient. The toilets are kept clean, multi-function toilets are available, and the station is barrier-free. When you leave the station, there is an old-fashioned shopping street at the south exit, with many privately owned shops such as cafes, bakeries, and second-hand bookstores, giving you a sense of the warmth of the local area. The north exit side is a slightly quieter residential area, dotted with supermarkets and clinics, making it a convenient environment for daily life. There is also a bicycle parking area in front of the station, making it easy to commute to work or school by bicycle. In general, Nishi-Ogikubo Station is not as flashy as a large terminal, but the premises are well-organized and all the necessary facilities are available, making it a very easy-to-use station. The atmosphere of the town around the station is also friendly, so even first-time visitors can use it with ease. It seems to have been loved by residents for many years as a comfortable station rooted in daily life. Restaurant
Harukiya Ogikubo Honten is a renowned ramen shop in Tokyo that has been serving its signature Tokyo-style ramen for over 60 years. Established in 1949, it is considered the birthplace of Tokyo ramen. The small restaurant with only eight seats is known for its quick service as patrons slurp down their bowls of ramen within minutes. The chicken stock and shoyu-based broth are infused with dried fish flavors, offering a unique taste experience.
Excellent food, fast service and friendly staff. Definitely worth coming to. Even our child finished all the noodles :)

A ramen shop that has lasted the test of time in Ogikubo. Super classic shoyu recipe that hasn’t changed one bit with a subtlety that is either hated or well appreciated. The strong use of lard oil is noted as your tongue gets burnt within the first minute. Niboshi, kelp, shiitake are present in the soup. Noodles are chewy and very enjoyable and the charsiu, while dry looking at first, is cooked to perfection. The wonton and menma are unremarkable. I recommend the charsiu-men or simply, the regular chuuka soba is good to satiate, particularly with the higher pricing.

Historic ramen from the 1940's. Order by touchscreen outside and pay by credit card etc is accepted. Ordered the wanton chashu shoyu ramen 1800円。The broth was very good, lots of chicken fat umami. Chashu was lean meat, wontons were pretty good as well but not much meat in these. The overall volume was massive but about right for the price. Very open kitchen so you can watch the master cook. Overall a cool experience and enjoyed eating history!

I’m not the biggest fan of ramen but I appreciate the flavour of the broth, the chewiness of the noodles and the soft pork. Lots of locals eat there. The line moves pretty fast. Great service here. They’re always refilling water and turning over tables quickly
O C — Google review
I got the large bowl; ¥1,500, with chashu pork and bamboo shoots. Let’s start with the broth — it’s a soy-based broth with seasonings, pork, and fish (baby sardines, actually) somewhere in there. There is a bit of oil on top. It’s a balanced broth — can’t say it’s thin or rich, but I drank every drop of it. The broth entertained the taste buds without overpowering it. Flavorful and nourishing. The pork is lean, and lightly-seasoned. It’s quite bland, actually, but not dry. It is easy to bite and quite easy to chew — not stringy at all. The texture reminds me of boiled pork. The bamboo shoots are superb. Sweet and soy. It’s the strong flavor in the bowl you’ll need if you want a kick on your taste buds. I guess this is the balancer for the rather bland pork. And the star — the hand-made noodles. They’re perfect. Chewy, al dente, and they take in the broth flavor really well! This is one of the best ramen bowls I ever had. No wonder they’re still here after 60 years. I will be back.

Ramen restaurant
Taishōken Eifukucho is a small eatery in Tokyo that offers delicious and unique ramen noodle soups with various toppings such as meat, egg, and seafood. The restaurant has counter and table seating, providing a cozy atmosphere for diners. Despite its unassuming exterior, the staff is accommodating to English-speaking customers. The menu may be limited, but the quality of the food makes it worth visiting.
This, is the definition of a Ramen spot. Like the ones us visitors hunt for years and never stumble across. A local favorite. Like, a line out side at lunch on a Wednesday. There's not a huge selection, but you get a good mix of quality and quantity. They're fast, the broth is right, the noodles thick, the pork tasty, nothing's fancy. It's about a skip and a jump from the train station so no reason to NOT stop by.
William K — Google review
Apparently the place has been running for decades and you can see why. The taste is different to any other kind of ramen and, despite having a strong flavor, it doesn’t get heavy. However, be very prepared: it is probably the largest bowl of ramen I’ve had in Japan (and there isn’t any ōmori option). The pork was smoky and I ordered additional menma that was good too. My only suggestion is to try to get there before 12, where the wait could be less than ten minutes. After that it can extend to up to 30 minutes.
Juan R — Google review
Scalding hot ramen, huge portions of shoyu broth, noodles, and pork. Totally worth it, love this place. Very old school — not much on the menu. It doesn’t look like they have great English support from the outside but everyone in there spoke to me in English and ordering was fine. During busy times they’ll come outside and ask you your order in advance to speed things up. Not great for groups, but I went there with two cousins and we had a great time. Highly recommend!!! My favorite ramen in Tokyo.
John B — Google review
Very delicious Ramen. The tasting is flavor. Caution, noodle quantity is about 300g, should eat in hungry.
Tai T — Google review
Great ramen! So rich and complex broth. A very unique and hearty ramen.
Hubert K — Google review
Ha ha, used to live around the corner from this place, very unique ramen with fish-based (nishin/herring, I think) broth, HUGE portions, about 3-4mm of scalding hot oil sits on the top of the soup keeping the whole bowl & noodles piping hot for your entire meal, be careful. Noodles cooked and served to perfection, definitely an acquired taste, but becomes addictive due to its uniqueness and balance between flavors, including some subtle but important bits of yuzu skin. All business inside, ramen, freezing cold glasses of water, maybe nama tamago, menma or extra chashu - otherwise, no chatting, no gyoza or beer at this place. Can't wait to go back. Closed Mondays...
Chris T — Google review
I think this Ramen shop is overrated (because of its reputation?). There are much better ramen in this area. The menu is simple (too simple), there is only one ramen type, no nori, no boiled egg. The soupe is ok but not exceptional. The noodles are good and the meat are fine (the only good point). Portion are too big. The staff is cold. The ramen is expensive for such poor quality.
Farad K — Google review
Not worth the line or double the price. Like it's not bad and portions are big. But 1100yen for a basic ramen? I cam buy 2 ramen with extra meat and egg in most places for the same price. Place is also kinda old/ugly Didn't hate it but I probably won't go back either...

Tensuke is a renowned hole-in-the-wall joint located in Suginami City, Tokyo. This counter seat-only spot is famous for its impressive and high-quality tempura dishes, with a specialty in egg tempura. The Tamago Lunch dish, featuring a tempura soft-boiled egg served over rice, is particularly irresistible. Despite its unassuming appearance, the creamy texture of the egg wrapped in a crispy coating makes it a must-try.
Small cozy place with great food! Arrived on the dot of opening but there was already a queue. Waited around 45mins to get a seat as only around 10-12 seating available. The chef/owner was a little cheeky too, did a small performance that turn out to be a hoax. We had the set (1,700 yen each) which consist of a bowl of rice topped with a runny fried egg which was really delicious, and 7 tempura items with a miso soup on the side. It was super filling and fulfilling. When we came out and saw that the queue has already extended super far back, and they only open 2 to 3 hours a day. Worth the visit!

The chief is a very interesting person. Great vibes and one of my best tempura in my life. I mentioned I m a vegetarian, then he made me a special tempura set. The tempura egg is one of their signature dish.Must try. I was a little hangover 😵 but after the meal, my stomach didn’t feel upset at all. Even though is a deep fried food. And the miso soup really comforted me.

We visited Tensuke, and what an amazing experience. The food was simple yet absolutely delicious, just rice with a perfectly fried egg and incredible tempura. The chef is so kind and welcoming, and his little cooking show adds such a fun touch to the meal. You can tell it’s a local favorite too. We arrived about 20 minutes before opening and were glad we did, because the line grew really fast. A must-visit spot for anyone who loves great tempura and an authentic local atmosphere.

It is worthwhile to go to Koenji just for this tempura-don. I came early at 1130 (they open at noon) just out of curiosity—yet there was a handful of people in the queue already. It is just that delicious! The batter is tasty and light. The dipping sauce is amazing. And the tempura egg is great. The set meals is well worth the 1800 yen. Highly highly recommended

Finally got to try this place. We waited amor an hour. There's actually only two items to pick from for lunchtime. You can pick tempura or a tempura rice bowl. If you choose regular tempura 🍤 you will get served one piece at a time. The rice bowl has all the prices with sauce drizzled over. Overall it was good! I just don't think anything is worth waiting this long This place is not wheelchair accessible ♿ 🚫

We were really excited to try this place and took a train to come here. Our tempura wasn’t cooked long enough to get that golden colour and good flavour. Even if it was cooked long enough I don’t think we would return sadly! The shrimp was poor quality and not juicy. Overall It wasn’t anything special and we’ve had way better tempura before. It’s a tourist spot for sure

In addition to the photo, bread and coffee were also included. However, the 2,600 yen course comes with soup (the main course is either fish or meat), while the 3,600 yen course does not come with soup. I would have been happy if it also came with soup. I was also a little concerned about the response of the customer service. There was no explanation of the dishes. The dessert sorbet was delicious When I asked, ``What's this dessert?'', the only answer I got was ``tea mousse.'' It was clearly not a tea mousse, and they couldn't tell me what kind of sorbet it came with, so I gave up. 3600 yen for lunch is not cheap. On top of that, I go to a restaurant expecting good service, so I would like someone to explain the food. It was a shame because the taste was so delicious.

(Translated by Google) I used it in the morning. The clerk is very polite and gentleman, and the atmosphere is very comfortable. The morning toast is also thick and buttery. Is yogurt different from regular yogurt? And the marmalade on top is super delicious! I had a luxurious time~ (Original)

Italian restaurant
La Voglia Matta Ogikubo is a beloved family-style Italian restaurant that has captured the hearts of many with its exceptional pizza and pasta offerings. The menu is extensive, encouraging diners to share multiple courses for a truly communal dining experience. Guests rave about the thin, crunchy crust of the pizzas, particularly enjoying unique flavors like saffron, zucchini, and mozzarella. The atmosphere can get lively and busy, especially during peak hours when families gather to enjoy their meals together.
A family style Italian restaurant with a large menu. They encourage ordering multiple courses and sharing the food with the table. The pizza is particularly good with a very thin and crunchy crust. The wine selection is limited, but the wine I had, from Puglia, was quite good. One of the waiters, Orlando, is Italian and also speaks English and Japanese well!

Excellent pizza, and pretty good pasta dishes too... service was pretty friendly and the space itself was nice, but it gets very busy, presumably its popular because it is so good, with a lot loud children when we were there. The margarita pizza that my parter had was very nice, and I had the carbonara, which was very flavorful. It was very creamy and cheesy... delicious.

This my most favorite pizza in the world. (outside Italy) But even more surprisingly, they have a foolproof menu. Killer salads, memorable pasta.. I've been feequenting for around 10 years and I've yet to exhaust the entire menu. I will, some day.

Very good pizzas. The saffron, zucchini, and mozzarella pizza in particular keeps us going back. Be prepared to wait most evenings.

Great pizza! Thin and wide. Good service, a bit crowded at rush hours. Best pizza in Ogikubo.
