Nestled in the charming city of Lappeenranta, southeastern Finland, the Lappeenranta Fortress is a captivating destination that seamlessly blends history with culture. This impressive 18th-century fortress complex was originally constructed during the Swedish era and later expanded by Russian forces, reflecting centuries of conflict between these two nations. As you wander through its well-preserved ramparts, you'll not only be transported back in time but also treated to stunning views of Lake Saimaa and the picturesque city bay.
Nice to walk around all the buildings on a sunny day! You can learn about the different places and their history. There are also great views to the waterfront and it's a short distance from all key locations in Lappeenranta. I would recommend coming by foot rather than car as you can get the most out of the visit by walking.

Very beautiful fortress built on a hill with a breathtaking view of the port of Lappeenrenta and the cruise ships that criss-cross the lake. Summer is the best time to enjoy the port and the small beaches nearby. In addition there are plenty of nice little restaurants on the edge of the lake.

Lake
Saimaa, the largest lake in Finland, is located near the city of Lappeenranta and offers a wide range of recreational activities. The area is known for its stunning natural beauty and clean, transparent waters that are even drinkable. Visitors can enjoy boating, nature trails, and picturesque views of the surrounding landscapes. Saimaa's shores are also home to endangered seals, adding to the allure of this popular destination.
Greatest nature visit I did in a foreign country! Very very beautiful sceneries and the lake was extremely pretty. Lake water is very clean and see through, even drinkable! The nature trails around were also very entertaining to walk in. Thoroughly enjoyed the trip with family.

Museums
The South Karelia Museum is a part of the fascinating fortress in Lappeenranta, offering a glimpse into the history and culture of South Karelia. The museum houses a valuable 200-year-old icon, Communion of the Holy, and features modern paintings by Karelian and Finnish artists. Visitors can also explore other nearby attractions such as the Orthodox church, Cavalry Museum, and South Karelian Art Museum within or near the fortress.
Nice museum. It’s small but the exhibits are good. You need to buy tickets. Normal ticket is 11e. Free for kids below 18. Some sections are only in Finnish. That’s a bit inconvenient but still I liked the place and vibes.
Ashish — Google review
It's always nice to learn something new, especially because I didn't know about Finnish history and this part of Europe. Certainly a beautiful and sad history of Karelia. Museum really nicely represents history. Greetings from Serbia

Is a must you have to visit, it gives you the idea of what was this town in the past, in the museum there is also exposed stuff that was used in the famous pizzeria "casa nostra". The owner, Adriano Vinciguerra, was very famous not only in Lappeenranta but in the whole Finland

Really interesting exhibitions! I didnt knew much about Karelian history or even the region/city of Lappeenranta. They had info in both Finnish and English for everything and their exhibitions were fascinating! If you are in town I really urge you to go here, if not for the museum so for the area of Linnoitus where there are other museums and a beautiful view over the whole city.
Jytte H — Google review
The museum is located in historical place where old fortress has been located from old times. Museum is small, only two rooms. The exposition in the first room was really interesting and decorated artistically: mythology of South Carelia and northern Siberia. In the second room you can see some items illustrating history of Lappeenranta to our days. Ticket is 8 euro for students.

Located within or near the fortress, the Cavalry Museum is a small but well-curated attraction that honors the cavalry as Lappeenranta's greatest heroes. Housed in the town's oldest building, this museum offers an interesting exhibition of war-related artifacts and also provides insights into Finnish cavalry history. Visitors can explore various exhibits and even try on a tarragon's outfit.
Nice place to learn some pieces of history of Lappeenranta

Small museum but very fine and detailed history. Most patriotic toilet ever.

(Translated by Google) The museum is quite small but very interesting. Cavalry, Cossacks and hakkapelitas, a topic that was a bit unfamiliar to me, now became more familiar. It's probably a subject that was once at school, but I didn't remember it. The museum has a lot of artifacts, videos and readable information that can fit into a small space. I recommend visiting the museum if the subject is interesting to you.

(Translated by Google) The exhibition has been professionally put together and has also taken into account the time span up to the present day. There is something interesting to find for those interested in history. I highly recommend it. In addition, until the end of July 2025, free admission to the museums in the fortress area 👍 (Original) Näyttely on ammattitaitoisesti koottu ja osattu huomioida myös aikajänne aina nykypäivään asti. Mielenkiintoista asiaa löytyy historiasta kiinnostuneille. Suosittelen lämpimästi. Heinäkuun loppuun 2025 lisäksi linnoitus alueen museoihin vapaa pääsy 👍

(Translated by Google) The history of the cavalry and tarragons from the famous hakkapelitos until 2016, when the training of tarragons was completely stopped. A small museum, but the folder that tells more about the subject is thick and heavy. In addition, there are many narrations to listen to, with which you can spend the whole day if you want. The horse, a sensitive and powerful prey animal, condenses something of war.

Restaurant
Nestled in the picturesque Lappeenranta harbor, Wanha Makasiini Bistro is a culinary gem that showcases a passion for food through its delightful A La Carte offerings. The restaurant, housed in a beautifully restored building, provides an inviting atmosphere perfect for both lunch and dinner. Diners can enjoy an impressive selection of local ingredients paired with exquisite wines and tasting menus.
Recommend this spot for a lovely high-quality lunch or dinner on the terrace or inside. Lovely service with waiting staff speaking good English alongside Finnish. Food offers the best local ingredients and some really impressive dishes! Good selection of local beers etc. too! The terrace offers a lovely spot to sit in the sun during the summer. Highly recommend!!!
E K — Google review
Wanha Makasiini offers delicious wine pairings with mouth-watering testing menus, as well as an a la carte menu. The location is a beautifully restored old building close to Lappeenranta harbor. The reason for 'only' four stars is that the ingredients could be more locally sourced - serving seawater salmon in a restaurant located by the biggest lake of Finland seems like a bit of a wasted opportunity...but I would still definitely recommend!
Erika G — Google review
The neighborhood and the restaurant itself was very nice. I loved it. I took the burger and the rest took the beef steak. The burger was nice, it wasn't fantastic but it was nice. It seems that the guys loved the steak! However, one of the steaks were done raw while it was asked for medium, so they had to change it. Actually, they did a good job, as they made totally new steaks , so Kudos to the staff. Nice slection of drinks available as well. All in all very good.

The food is great as well as the interior of the place. Lots of seafood in the menu. I enjoyed my burger, there was nothing ti complain. The fries could be a little more crispy. The fish burger was also great.
Sami K — Google review
Excellent casual bistro experience. We stopped by quite early in the evening and had no trouble finding seating. The food was well prepared, but a little on the heavy side for my liking with bacon, deep fried fish and creamy potato mash. The bistro is situated near to the water, but the view mainly consist of a car parking place. Excellent service!
Eetu P — Google review
The food was very good. For starters I had pike tartar and it was excellent. The Black Angus I had for main course was well prepared and the potato cake and the veggies were really tasty. It's a quiet place in a historic building and based on this experience I can warmly recommend this restaurant.
Jaakko K — Google review
Seems like a decent place with a creative chef. I had the fish platter and was quite happy with it, although came with cooked salmon instead of smoked one. The best was probably the whitefish so I would recommend it at least as a starter.

The creamy salmon soup was not really what I expected it to be. It was more like salmon and veggies accompanied with generous amount of delicious creamy sauce. Very surprising and creative

Restaurant Lalo is a casual dining spot that offers a variety of charcoal-grilled dishes, pizzas, and burgers in a relaxed setting. The restaurant provides an incredible salad bar and outdoor seating for guests to enjoy their meals. While some visitors found the music to be too loud, others appreciated the fast service and delicious food options such as beef tenderloin steak with baked potato wedges and mushroom sauce.
The food is over expectation. The price includes salads ja dessert. They have various salads, 3 types of cakes and some dried fruits. You can choose 1 main food and then you can choose 1 side dishes( potato, sweet potato, bread, or rice and 1 sauce. The shrimp tastes so good in little spicy from chili and garlic. Highly recommend this dishes going with rice and mushroom sauce. There is some grilled vegetables on the dishes also and it tastes yummy. They have warm and cozy atmosphere with nice music.

Great service and atmosphere. Complimentary salad and dessert bar included. Food was delicious. Quite a lot of parking beside this place. Would recommend.

Lots to eat in the meat platter. Meat was good in general except for the ribs which couldve been more tender and maybe could've used some seasoning. The music on the terrace was horrible.
Timo R — Google review
The dishes are very delicious and huge portions for their prices. The salad selection as starter is super fresh and good. Husband and I came to this place two days in a row for lunch. So that should mean something. ^^ The service is very good, food came fast. Staffs were kind.

My wife and I were trying to decide between Lalo and Ship Restaurant Prinsessa Armaada. We made the right decision. Lalo was less expensive, better tasting, has an incredible salad bar, and outdoor seating. The only thing to knock is the mind numbing club music. It made us leave earlier than enjoying the atmosphere. That would have been better on the ship restaurant.
Proliturgy — Google review
We spontaneously came here for dinner and had to wait a bit to get a table. Although this isn't a small restaurant it's always packed. Rightfully so! The (grilled) food is truly divine, the staff friendly and the atmosphere cosy and welcoming! The prices are actually on the lower side considering that you can take as much as you like from the well-stocked salad buffet (lots of antipasti in there too!), as well as the coffee, tea and dessert buffet! And it's all good quality stuff, so you definitely get a lot of bang for the buck. I think you get free water too, if you don't order drinks. An English menu is available and we can't wait to eat there again! :)

Underrated place. Really good atmosphere and lovely staff. The food here is amazing, really delicious. We had the Angus Beef Burger and Veggie Skews.
Birdman — Google review
Very nice restaurant that will definitely help you when you're hungry, especially if you have just arrived after the road. Just take a pasta and you will have an opportunity to try some salad, vegetables, jalapeno pepper, bread, coffee (with milk or not) and dessert. All this for the affordable price. It's the way we did as we came to Lappeenranta and thanks to my girlfriend that she spotted this restaurant among the other places on Valtakatu street when we were really hungry and cold. Nice service here and great atmosphere. Recommended restaurant.

Angus Steak & Wine is a delightful culinary destination that promises an unforgettable dining experience. Guests rave about the perfectly cooked steaks, with options like the minute steak and cowboy tenderloin stealing the spotlight for their juicy flavors and impeccable sear. The garlic potatoes and grilled vegetables complement these dishes beautifully, although some diners feel the sauce could use improvement.
We were four and all had different dishes. I took the minute steak and it was lovely. Meat cooked to perfection and tasted very well. Garlic potato was fantastic and the vegetables were astonishing. Thybwere grilled very nicely. The sauce could be much bettee though. We had the cowboy tenderloin steak as well (medium). What a meat. Fantastic steak, it had a nice sear and the meat was juicy, served hot, and again the taste of the meat was fantastic. Potato wedges were pretty good. Some of them had a crusty skin and soft inside which is how I like potato wedges. I'd prefer if all of them were like that. The sauce could have been better again (Pepper sauce). One had meat platter, it wqs quite good and tasty, however, the chorizo was burnt (as you can see from the picture) but upon telling the staff they apologized and sorted it out with a new set of chorizos and boy it was delicious. So job well done. And to my favorite which was the prawn risotto. It was the dish of the night. Full of flavor, one of the best risottos and the prawns couldn't be cooked better. All in all very nice restaurant, totally recommend it.

Nice place, rather expensive. The snails were not that great and I got like 3 chicken stripes with very greasy vegetables but the goat cheese was amazing plus the alcohol free wine was such a pleasant surprise and did taste really good. All in all it was an okay evening with some mediocre good food. For the price I would have expected a bit more. On the side note I ordered an cappuccino and it was so small 😂. But the service was really nice and great.

Very good option for a Business Lunch or a evening out with friends. Centrally located so Angus is easy to reach. There is a separate Vine Cabinet for more private occasions.

No joke, best burger I’ve ever had. Soft bun on inside, crispy on the outside with a butter coat. Burger was nice and tender paired with great toppings. Fries were ok. They have vegan, vegetarian and fish options. Alcohol free wine as well. Service nice fast and friendly. You get complementary water (I’m not used to that in my home country). Interior cozy, pretty and clean (I really like their candle light thing). Will go again.

One of the most delicious plate that i have eaten so far. Wonderful place/decoration and service. Time delivery was good as well. Some of the options can be really expensive but there are some in a good price.

Even the entrance is one of the simple ones, but you get surprised with decorations when you walk in to the restaurant. super delicious foods with a very fast service. Stakes, salmon and chicken filet are those that we tried and all were fantastic.

Italian restaurant
Rosso IsoKristiina is a charming restaurant that exudes Italian charm, making it the perfect spot for creating joyful memories with friends and family. The menu features a delightful array of antipasti, alongside both Roman and Neapolitan pizzas, as well as contemporary pasta dishes that are sure to please any palate. Guests can also indulge in an impressive selection of Italian wines and delectable desserts that round out the dining experience beautifully.
Definitely would visit again. Extremely friendly and professional customer service. They take orders from the table, also takes payment from there. We tasted the Pizza Pollo and Scampi Pasta. There are onion leaves along with the mini Shrimps. Shrimps were not that big but the flavor of asparagus and onion leaf blended the taste at just the perfect point. Salt was less but it just kept the original flavor intact. Pizza had pineapple, and those were big. Since I love pineapple in pizza, it was good for me. If you don't please ask them to leave that. Also the salad with nuts and mustard/garlic sauce was amazing. Finally, we also tasted the Panna Cotta, a pudding like dessert. It was also good. A bit expensive, but not that much of premium like Wolkoff. So it was okay. Good experience. Recommended.

Visited 1st time here for Saturday lunch. Had pasta pesto and prosciutto crudo pizza. Was disappointed with pizza dough. Felt like micro oven pizza. Pasta pesto was great with chicken and fried prosciutto crudo topping. Pasta dish was large and price reasonable. Place was not crowded. You can have also free salad with olives, cherry tomatoes, water melon and house sauce while waiting for main dish. Very friendly services. Would visit again for other dishes beside pizza.

This is all you get for 29,20 €. Definitely not worth it. Steak was chewy. Waited over 45 minutes after ordering, took over 30 min to take our order. 4pm, wasn’t even busy

The worst experience ever .. I ordered pasta with shrimp and they took like 1 hour to prepare it and what I got is a plate full of pasta and only 4 little shrimps! Are you kidding ? Taste was not good at all probably I would make better pasta at home and the portion is too little compared to the price ..

We went to pizza perjantai expecting we could taste different pizzas as the promotion estates that you can eat as much pizza as you want. In fact you can select one pizza from the menu and have the entree and desert in the promotion. So if you don't like the flavor you picked you might to get stuck with that an to be honest one pizza is enough for one person so the promotion is quite pointless as if you some up the pizza the entry and desert, depending the pizza you choose could be cheaper just pick what you want than go to the promotion, specially if the person has not the S-group card. We struggled to find the waitress. We have to wait for 5 or more minutes until someone give us attention. And then another 20 min for the pizza. We just had normal tap water and they change it when they saw it was about to end. The pizza was mediocre, nothing really special at least the ones we ordered a lá Rosso and chicken bbq. Entree and desert were quite good. When we were about to pay, another surprise when we realized they charged us for the tap water. We drink two thirds of one and one third of the second and would never expect to be charged for that. In comparison with other pizzerias the experience was catastrophic I am not willing to come back anytime soon. Almost forgot, the salad buffet was so small and with very few options that I rather not get any at all. Big disappointment

Overpriced and under-serviced. Had lunch on saturday 4 june. In the chicken and bacon toast with fries and salad there was a small piece of chicken and about 20 fries with some iceberg sla leaves and pieces of sundried tomato for nearly 20 Euro. REALLY?? and it took 55 Minutes between us sitting down and the food being served. But hé, the waitress apologised that she hadn't told us that waiting times usually are 45 minutes. Never Again, thank you. PS: i had good memories of Rosso from some years ago, but have seen quality and service go down every year since.

Nestled in the heart of Lappeenranta, The Kitchen is a laid-back dining destination that offers a diverse global menu. Whether you're craving juicy burgers, succulent grilled meats, fresh seafood, or delightful vegetarian options, this spot has something for everyone. The ambiance is perfect for both casual dinners and business lunches, with a cozy private room available for small gatherings of up to 26 guests.
The beef tenderloin tartar starter was the highlight of the dining experience. It was delicately seasoned and served with crunchy kale and a sprinkle of Parmesan cheese. The delicate texture of the beef and the crunch of the kale was a delightful contrast. As main I had the chanterelle tagliatelle, which was rich, creamy and comforting. I definitely recommend it. My partner had the crusted red perch with potato au gratin and it was delicious as well. Wine selection was pretty decent too.

A great restaurant find in Lappeenranta, Finland. Quiet atmosphere, understated decor, and the waitress offered us a menu in English. My choices of grilled salmon and grilled cos lettuce hearts with bacon were perfectly cooked and delicious.

Modern looking place with lots of air, overall seemed even a bit bare, since the place was near empty on a Saturday nigh in January. The food was very good, if perhaps a touch traditional. There weren’t too many fresh ideas on the plate that I could see. But a classic done well is a nice thing to have. Quite a good wine selection, with staff well on board with recommendations. Otherwise very good and fast service too.
Juhani T — Google review
This restaurant is between the new shopping centre and the pedestrian streets of Lappeenranta. In other words, it is not an obviously place to find and visit. The restaurant is rather large and is run by a restaurant chain in the city. For the price that is charged, it is no wonder the chain restaurant survived in Lappeenranta. There are two other restaurants with distention types of food, but they are all rather overpriced. When paying a price, it is not just about the experience of tasting good food, but also the experience and the environment. On this occasion, I visited the restaurant in a table of four, including one child. The waiters didn't mind where we were sat, and this later caused issues with regards to noisy and rowdy nearby customers. So, even before we started to eat the food, the experience was uncaring. This is often a problem with Finnish waiters, but in other restaurants whereby the price tag is as high as this restaurant, the waiters are usually trained. In this restaurant, any temp worker could have done the job and with no expertise in customer service. I could write more about the poor experience, but I'll get to the point about the food. Over priced is an understatement. We decided to share two starters. Beetroot dish. There were a mixture of sliced beetroot, and shavings. Not impressive at all. The presentation was in a bowl, and I'm not exactly sure how they expect people to eat from it. Poor culinary skills demonstrated. We also had a cheese board. The last time I had one of these for a star was in Warsaw, and I had so much of it, I thought I would never eat cheese again. On this occasion, it was OK, although there was a sauce on it that was too, although only half a place, so who knows what the point of that was. Main course, we had two fish eaters, a steak, and a vege burger. The steak was cooked well done and was satisfactory, despite the 33eur mark up. There is no information about what type of steak it is sourced from, and it was the most expensive main course dish, by around 10eur! The fish portion for the child was the same as the adult. The skin on the salmon was still on it, so again poor chef skills given the dish was in the children's menu. The adult version had a nice orangey sauce, and was satisfactory. The vege burner was 20e, comprosed of smoked tofu (from the shop), large mushroom, put into a burger with 5 different sauces in it, that they're was never the same bite. This may be nice for an Easter who is an adventurer, but it would have been nice to at least reconfirm the last bite taste palette. The worst part were the potatoes, which were supposed to be fries. Again, poor quality from frozen foods, given that there was hardly any potato, and just skin drenched in oil. Even this simple dish, the kitchen could not get it right. The waiters some how also thing it is good to give both sets of cutlery at the beginning, when the tables are not that clean and there are fabric napkins that occasionally go on the lap. The hygiene consideration by the management needs a reality check on the customers needs and not only focusing on the practical aspects for convenience of the staff. We didn't stay for deserts, although, we did want to order a drink between starter and main course, but the drinks arrived after the main course food. In summary, this is a restaurant that is over rated, over priced and more attention is needed on the customers needs and better quality food. I wouldn't have minded, paying the price, but the staff must offer some sort of service and think about table arrangements if noisy neighbouring customers. In that way, I left with the impression that the place is a compete rip off.

Very nice place in heart of Lappeenranta. U can choose lunch for 10 or 13 €. There were bolonjeza, fish and chicken for main meal, soup, big variation of salads. Drink: coffee, tea, sparkling water, soda. Food was very tasty, place very comfortable and cozy. I will get there again. 😋😋

My partner and I had dinner at The Kitchen while visiting relatives in Lappeenranta. We were welcomed by friendly staff who helped us throughout the evening with food and drink choices. We stayed for three hours, consumed starters, mains, desserts, beer and cocktails and left happy and satisfied with the whole experience. I was especially impressed by the cooking of the steak which I ordered rare as well as being offered an array of exceptional choices when ordering whiskey later in the evening. Will be revisiting whenever we are here and I can’t wait to bring more people so we can try the Chef’s Special menu!
