History Museums
Located at picturesque Newry Beach, Holyhead Maritime Museum offers a fascinating family experience, showcasing the maritime history of Holyhead. The museum features exhibits on shipwrecks, gallant rescues, and pirates, providing insight into the town's evolution from a fishing village to a thriving port. Visitors can step back in time at the oldest lifeboat station in Wales, dating back to 1858.
It was Armed Forces Day and I wanted to reflect and look at something historical with a theme of servitude that was close to me. I had been advised to visit the Maritime Museum by a friend and my first impressions were greeted by friendly volunteer staff who had the time to chat and welcome myself and my wife. We paid our entrance fee and entered and were again greeted by an ex lifeguard volunteer who had a wealth of knowledge of the exhibits on display, local knowledge and a passion for sharing. We felt incredibly at ease and were impressed with the amount of exhibits, and museum pieces carefully and thoughtfully arranged in such a limited space, most definitely worth a visit if your ever in Holyhead.

Wonderful staff who were really knowledgeable and kind. We were on a genealogical quest and they helped a great deal. Big thanks to Elwyn, Keith, Eric, Patsy and John! To add, the museum and air raid shelter have some excellent pieces, plenty of models and documents in excellent condition.
Anita K — Google review
A fantastic museum with some incredible exhibitions! The atmosphere is welcoming, and the staff are friendly and extremely knowledgeable. I really enjoyed my visit. There's also a World War II air raid shelter on-site, filled with fascinating artifacts and memorabilia – a real highlight

Fabulous small Maritime Museum that has great staff and lots of exhibits of Maritime history. Don’t miss the bomb shelter directly outside the Museum and its fabulous staff. They will show you some exhibits

Fantastic little museum, with a very nice Bistro on the front. Very friendly staff to help with visit and well priced. Worth a visit if you find yourself in Holyhead lots of interesting history of the area, the wars and the maritime history of North Wales.

Wonderful experience, very helpful and knowledgable guides! Fascinating history, would recommend!
Millie C — Google review
Spent about 2.5 hours at the Maritime Museum. Two different sections, history of lifeboats and shipwrecks around Anglesey and WW2 memorabilia in the air-raid shelter. Both locations packed full of interesting artifices and many remarkable tales of heroism. There were several volunteers who were very eager to talk to you and provide information and background on he and exhibits. Harri was always available to us and was a lovely guy - he told us so much useful stuff. Would definitely recommend a visit - good value for money and free parking on the road. Not a problem to us but I’d just mention that there wasn’t a cafe on site.

The tour guide was super knowledgeable and made me feel like we were on the boats he talked about. The staff inside was also the sweetest!

Park
Nature & Parks
Breakwater Country Park, located in a former rock quarry at the base of Holyhead Mountain, offers scenic coastal walks and birdwatching opportunities. The park features themed walks and history trails, making it a popular spot for bird enthusiasts during the summer season. Visitors can also enjoy fishing in the park's lake and take advantage of its dog-friendly environment. Additionally, there are amenities such as a children's playground and restrooms available for visitors to use.
The park is well maintained with a number of walks around it, including along the coast with spectacular views. The staff were very helpful and friendly and the café looked good, although we did not use it. The only issues was the parking metre would not accept card or contactless.
Andy F — Google review
Great place to visit, great views from the hills which are easy- ISH climbing. Small park, lake and parking around £4 for 5hrs. Park free then a short walk into the area.
Nicky A — Google review
Beautiful spot and some reasonably accessible walking routes with a buggy. Kids explored the good quality play area and history bits before we headed past the fishing/duck pond and down the main road to the breakwater. We didn't reach all the way to the lighthouse as the wind was 40-50mph but got a good half way, the walk back against the wind was a bit more strenuous than going so consider that if you're not too fit. We spent a lot of time at the cove just to the side of the breakwater and even saw a grey seal. We went up onto the headland from the cove beach which gave great views and you can see the pathway back up to the car park/cafe/play area. The waves crashing on the breakwater and different hues of blue on the sea where fabulous in the sun. Parking was £6/4hrs and the toilets are free. The cafe also has its own small play area. There are nice mosaics dotted about and a gallery under the big chimney stack. People were parking for free on the road nearer to the breakwater but £6 for 4 hrs wasn't unreasonable at all given the facilities there. We didn't mind the walk but if you're not staying long then maybe park closer to the breakwater/harbour but if you're looking at the mountain routes then the main car park is a good option.
Lil — Google review
Expensive parking for closed cafe and tiny pond. However you pay to walk Holyhead Mountain really. I'll review this separately. This is what we came here for and was a very nice walk. Amazing views from all around Holyhead. You can see the Isle of Man easily. Loads of paths all over the mountain but easy to take the wrong one, so i would advise to follow a route. We used the Alltrails app.
Tracy S — Google review
Car park and toilets were open but cafe closed, and the visitor centre was shut when we finished our walk at 3pm... An expensive car park when the country park facilities are closed at open prices (prices up to £10 for parking)... The walk onto nearby Holyhead mountain was nice though, albeit challenging at times especially to the summit.
Gary S — Google review
The place is ok but the parking makes NO sense. On arrival, I paid via the Pay by Phone app. £4.20. Then my husband asked me to DOH let check the parking meter: no sign of Pay by Phone but stark warnings if fines id you so t display a ticket so I paid £4 for two hours. The ticket however, had three hours on it??... None of it makes sense. So ended up paying £8.20 for two hours.......and I'll be contacting Pay by Phone to ask why they've set this place up (in the official Anglesey parking website.....with a link to Pay by Phone from there!) as I kine payments with an ID code when it doesn't exist in th parking meter in the car park itself!
L D — Google review
Only stopped by to see the old ships gun. Ended up getting an ice cream as well. From what I saw, the park seems lovely. It's unfortunate that there's no information about the gun, or even it listed on a map, as it is a very interesting piece of history, but we did find it with the help of a nice man from the National Trust building. The park seemed very nice, even stopped by the pond to have an ice cream.
Michael G — Google review
Nice place to take the kids to run off some energy, plenty of room for a picnic, there is a small lake where fishing is permitted and is an easy walk round, if you're feeling a bit more energetic a little hike over Holyhead Mountain to South Stack will get the blood pumping. Get there early, the car park gets full, then numpties will double park on the the road in and out.

Ucheldre Centre is a former convent chapel transformed into Holyhead's artistic hub and one of Anglesey's liveliest spots. It houses a bookshop with an extensive collection of historical books, a 200-seat theater for amateur performances and broadcasts from other theaters, and a small art gallery showcasing local artists' works. The staff is highly praised, and the on-site cafe offers reasonably priced drinks and snacks. Visitors can also explore the gift shop featuring locally made products.
This is the cultural heart of Holyhead, with a bookshop full with books about the history of the town, the area and the country, equipped with a theatre where lively amateur performances are staged and broadcasts from other theatres are shown, and a little art gallery with works from local artists. The staff are wonderful, and the cafe provides drinks and snacks for visitors at a very good price.

An unusual place to visit for a concert but the acoustics are superb and if you pick the right seats you get an excellent view. It's like watching a show in your living room. Will certainly go back if they have something I would enjoy.

Loved everything about it. Went to view the Wispy Willow Designs and also the Willow Mammoth that was made for the festival in Holyhead. Lovely gardens, cafe and Arts displayed too.

Popped in on a quiet Bank Holiday to have a look at the multitude of art on display, and to learn a little of the history, and the future plans, of the centre. Nice panad and a chat with the staff. A very pleasant hour ! 🤗

It's ok. I'm still trying to work out what it is. So it's a church building converted to a community cinema where you can watch shows and also come round for some meals. Which also has an art gallery and a gift shop.

Great place only stopped for a while walked from sand dunes near aberfaw to the church on the island then back to the van had a lovely walk along the sand to the village

I walked around a bit and visited the grounds of the fort while waiting for a ferry. It's an interesting place for a quick visit, but i wouldn't go out of my way to see it.

One of the best walks we've had visiting north wales. Our 5 year old daughter enjoyed this trail. We did not have a car thus we have to take the coastal path from the city centre, then found our way to ascend to the mountain navigating through the sign posts. There are parking spaces for those who have cars and get to the south stack light house. But we had to ascend and descend to the holy head mountain by foot. Nearest bus stop maybe around 1hr walk.
HEIDE B — Google review
You could never get enough of being on the trail surrounded by such landscapes. If you think the island is small, remember that here you have a 200 km long coastal trail. Great views from the cliffs, great places to observe rare species of birds and most of all, silence! All this, away from the hustle and bustle of cities and streets.

A beautiful area just on the outskirts of Holyhead. Walks in woodland flanked by beautiful beaches with pretty views. Dog walkers welcomed. Toilet free, free parking, cafe as you leave/enter.

Fantastic walking. Beautiful views. Can do just a short walk or a good trek. Rough terrain in places but well worth it. Loved every minute. Free too. What more could you ask for.

The Harbourfront Bistro is a modern British restaurant located in Holyhead, offering a vibrant and light-filled dining space with a terrace overlooking the sea. The bistro prides itself on serving contemporary British cuisine made from locally sourced produce. Situated right by the shoreline of Anglesey's Newry Beach, diners can enjoy their meals as if they are floating on the water during high tide.
We had a lovely meal here as a group of 4. Food arrived super quick after ordering and was delicious with great portions. The menu variation is excellent and it was hard to choose what to have initially! Service great and would highly recommend.

Lovely restaurant. The food was great and there was a good selection (especially for veggies). We really liked the view over the bay. We would definitely come back here!

Stopped overnight before getting the ferry to Ireland, fantastic location and people really friendly. I had the small plates, calamari and tereakyi are great. Great for gluten free food, great find

Just had a lovely meal here with my mum, its a curious little place full of charm and that included the welcome we received. The atmosphere is cosy and comfortable, the staff had a perfect mix of attentiveness without being over burdoning. The food was excellent, portions are substantial and fairly priced. The only thing I was dissapointed about was that it wasn't busier for their sakes because its a deserved little spot. Will defo return, can not wait to try some more of their menu.

Amazing views from inside the restaurant over the harbour whilst sat eating a fabulous meal with excellent service. Definitely recommend

I found them on Google, randomly searching for a place to have lunch. They were busy but they found a place for us - a strike of luck! The bistro is in a great location and has a nice sea-themed decor. They also have a decent food and drink choice. The staff and service is amazing. Please, book in advance if you want to ensure that you will get a table. Ideal for couples and bigger groups as well. Highly recommended!

First visit to this lovely cosy bistro and lovely fresh food had a window seat with a view of the harbour it was a bit of a grey day but a nice warm welcome inside my son and I shared a sharing starter and skipped straight to desert food was delicious will definitely be back again soon it can get busy so probably best to book

We didn't make a reservation so they could only seat us at 1+pm which wasn't a problem. We just walked along the promenade to build up an appetite! So four hungry people ordered a crab & lobster sandwich, a seafood bisque with homemade spicy rum infusion, a hamburger and a haddock fish and chips. The bisque was great especially with the spiced rum. And the owner seeing is so taken with it, poured an extra tot off the run first is two taste neat! Very nice! The fish and chips were great as well. The fish was very fresh and the chips were extra crispy. The other set of chips were kind of fat so less crispy and needed ketchup 😁 The other two dishes were good but not as memorable as the bisque and fish. The dishes were large as well and we had to give up on dessert and coffee! Will definitely return, this time with a reservation!

We called in to Holyhead and found this super restaurant and bar. Great atmosphere, lovely views from outside eating area plus plenty of inside dining. Great gluten free fish and chips and very tasty curry served with rice AND chips 😎
Anne A — Google review
Great location perfect when visiting the area, with many tables and small outside area. Nice view and large portions. Best known for their home made pizzas that are popular. Stay away from the salt and pepper prawns that aren't the best. I decided to go for a haddock fish and chip. The fish fillet was ok but the buttered skin wasn't that good. Overall I wouldn't recommend it either. Lastly we ordered their burger, a pretty large portion, but overcooked so bad luck... Concluding on the positives is the fact it's easy to find a table even without booking and the large portions. If we knew better we would have gone for their pizzas 🍕

Views of castle ruins beyond the harbor, tasty food, and a nice selection of draft beers. Fast service from friendly staff - could tell they cared about our dining experience! Highly recommend!!

Pulled up here after checking out South Stack Lighthouse 👀 Came thru expecting some bomb fish & chips, but lowkey missed the lunch slot (only 12–3 pm, rip 😩). Ended up grabbing pizza + fries instead and ngl, it slapped. Vibes were immaculate. Deffo a W spot, would 100% recommend ✨

Really impressed. Food was excellent, one of the best pizzas I've had in a long time. Muscles and burgers were good according to everyone else. Starters were tasty with decent portions. Friendly staff, dog friendly too. Lunchtime visit, Friday, quiet, only a few other people inside.
Adam F — Google review
Took the mussels on friday night... I have never seen such a small portion of the worst cooked and smallest mussels ever. Completely dried out. I'm quite sure I got microwaved leftovers from someone else. We ordered right before the kitchen closed so I could not complain and ask for a fresh dish. It was the worst food I ever got in a restaurant. If a chef let's the leave his kitchen, he/she does not belong there. One star is too much to rate my dish, but I cannot select a half one. The place was also very loud, not pleasant to sit, but good food would compensate that

Hidden away at back of marina is this lovely coffee shop, and when weather is good the outside area is in sun and has lovely views. Inside - nice loo's and plenty of sitting space. As the for tea and cake.. yumm!! Tea comes in lovely large pot and cup, and simple victoria sponge was nice!

Popped in for a very quick bite to eat. 3 small plates with fries for just £18 which was plenty for lunch. Staff very nice. Very clean and tidy with lovely views. Food was great, good choice of different foods and drinks. Would come back if ever this way again.

There is a great friendly atmosphere. The Paddlers Return is decorated with paddles and other boating paraphernalia which made the place feel very homely. The food was yummy and good value. At breakfast there were free refills of coffee and tea which we appreciated. Thank you very much for having us.

Amazing place. They were quite busy, so were up front and told us there would be a wait on the food. But was well worth the wait. Perfect for the kids.
Chris T — Google review
Food was lovely and there were lots of games free to use, the food service went to quite a long wait but it's because we were there when it opened. Overall lovely and it isn't a formal place, great for a night out and the food was served well. (The chicken nuggets and chips was a kids meal so it was smaller) p.s. it opens at 5PM and food is open to serve at 5:30PM

Nice place. Very busy when we went there so there were queues and delays. Some things a little odd - like one many for the whole place. Also a bit confusing for anyone with food allergies. But a cozy place with an interesting atmosphere serving tasty food. Plenty of parking and in a nice spot.

The new menu features an array of dishes such as hanging kebabs, bao buns, tacos, and delectable desserts. In addition to the delicious food, they also serve unique cocktails like Vimto Daiquiris and Gin and Tonic Sorbets.
A hidden gem. Delicious food and beautifully presented and we didnt have to wait long. Very impressed. The beautiful waitress was very nice and helpful. We were in a rush for the boat and she put my son's dessert in a container to take away without us even having to ask because she knew we were in a hurry. Simple initiative like that is like gold. So glad we didn't go to McDonald's!!! Will be back again on our travels.

Popped in here for an hour. Ordered kfc, veg spring roll, onion rings, the new hoisin chicken egg rice and the chicken tikka wrap. The nachos could do with some salt. The spring roll and the rings were good. The mains not so much. The chicken tasted funny. Was very hungry but couldn't complete the food. Not for the potion size which is good for one person but for the taste. Didn't suit me and my family. Also very lackluster staff. Made sure we left in an hour as they asked us to ( it was an almost empty restaurant other than a few tables.. around 4 pm and were expecting guests hours later and were hesitant to give a table to us without reservation) mixed feelings. Don't think will go here again. The only reason to be here was it was one of the few places for a one or two options of vegetarian food. Other than the usual pub chips.

Alright where do I start, I recently went on a visit to Simply Street bar and grill Holyhead as i was motivated by many positive reviews. However I am appalled by the quality of food, also the food came approximately 30 minutes late. I asked a member of staff why my single burger was taking so long and i got treated inadequately, the member of staff that treated me with attitude and with no respect (which made me feel like a lower class human being). Before writing this review i looked at many other bad reviews just encase i was being harsh and to see if other people had the same treatment. From viewing the other reviews i noticed that you were attacking other customers for giving you some feedback and also calling them the likes of "saddos" "Internet Trolls" and "Clowns". Do you take any feedback from reviews? I don't think so, instead you attack them you clearly don't know how to run a business and to build foundations off your mistakes. In my opinion you need to be more considerate about your customers and treat them with more respect. I am expecting a reply to this with no attitude and for you to treat me with respect. Image of my burger is included below.

Great burgers and food around £20 with a beer Nice modern restaurant and good decor with music . Staff could be more experienced or professional. No beer list for example. Told they would need table back for virtual customers . Still empty when I left . Hate being made feel not welcome. My money was real not the virtual bookers.
Byron D — Google review
Worth every one of the five stars. The food is top notch. The staff are wonderful and the place has a great feel to it. It's the kind of place you can keep coming back to and never get bored. Small enough to be cosy but large enough for a great atmosphere. I went for the JD and Coke burger. Wow... What a treat! My only complaint, if any, maybe there should be some wetwipes or napkins on the tables because you just get stuck in, caught up in the mood lol.

Many visitors have enjoyed the vibrant atmosphere, complemented by attentive service and cleanliness. The only true restaurant in Holyhead. Serves wine, table service, eat in, refined and good. If it’s busy, they will be slower making your food fresh. I’m fussy, and this place is good!

Absolutely first class food and service. Such a nice place for our birthday meal out. Don't worry if you don't like spicy food, I had paneer pakora and chicken pasanda - very mild but tasty. The dips with poppadum while we ordered were really tasty. The Welsh lamb was not too hot with lovely onions and leeks, top quality. Nothing was too much trouble, highly recommended. Really nice atmosphere.

Dropped in for a quick meal, onion bhaji starter was lovely and crisp, mint sauce (which I had to ask for) was excellent. My main was Amrith Kana, a dish I'd never heard of before - it was delicious. Most enjoyable, would recommend. Beware, cash only!

didn't really intend on a curry this day but couldn't find any town centre pubs doing food on a Monday....we decided on the meal for 2 option with popadom's, onion bargee, samosa two curries , 2 rice and side dish of potato and spinach in a sauce and Naan to share about £32.00, sounded ok but it was Hunt the chicken in the Tikka masala and likewise in the lamb bunna! as a curry lover myself I found them quite bland and the curries themselves arrived not hot (temperature wise) I read a recent poor review and they mentioned the were told the card reader wasn't working and had to go out to a cash machine- today was no different so bear that in mind should you try this place out... All in all not a place I would return to 😞
Mark D — Google review
Service was good , curry was nice but VERY small portion, more curry then actual chicken and lamb about 5 pieces of chicken in the whole curry .Chappatti is very small for the price of £1.55 .

This place has gone down hill . I used to go here for many years , and recently we’ve stopped going here . It used to be the best Indian around but it’s definitely not now . Very disappointed . The portions for chicken tikka masala is an utter disgrace , you get SMALL pieces of chicken only about 5 of them and the sauce is like runny water . The sauce needs to be less watery and the chicken pieces in chicken tikka masala should be bigger and there should be more of them around 8 or 9 . Also from the outside it’s very dirty and outdated .

One of the best curries I’ve had for a very long time. No frills but excellent curry.
