The Monastery of Alcobaça is a stunning Cistercian monastery with origins dating back to the 12th century. As you enter through its grand gates, you'll be captivated by the breathtaking Gothic architecture and intricate stone carvings that depict centuries of history. This UNESCO World Heritage site was founded in 1153 by King Afonso Henriques and is considered one of the most beautiful Cistercian monasteries in Portugal.
Impressive from the outside, sober on the inside. However some details reveal the size of the population inhabiting it at the height of its existence. The number of rooms, the large kitchen with the huge chimney and more. All beautifully maintained. The graves of Pedro and Ines is a beautiful piece of carving; and their graves are romantically positioned so that they will see each other first when they rise again :) We were almost alone (‘t was the low season), but it can clearly become very crowded during high season. When you’re done visiting you can get some food or refreshments on the place nearby.

Well restored huge monastery. Very well maintained, easy to follow map. Read up on the history beforehand "the Romeo and juliet" of Portugal.
Laura L — Google review
Well worth the visit. Much of the monastery if free and open to the public. The structure is grand and well worth a look itself, but what really stands out are the engravings on the tombs of King Pedro and Dona Inês de Castro. The stone carvings are incredibly intricate and we'll preserved.

Great place that's worth a visit. We've seen a lot of cathedral's, monasteries, etc. This one is worth the 15 euro admission. It's easy to skip some areas so pay attention to the marked route and signs. Very clean bathrooms also. I would go here then stop at Pratu's Tapas restaurant across the street. #mosteirodealcobaca

Worth the visit; nice places for lunch or dinner after. In my original review I said, based on memory, that in most respects it is not as impressive as Batalha, but having just visited them both, back to back, I take that back. They both have different charms, and I can't say that either is "better".
Matt E — Google review
Beautiful place I recommend seeing it. It's worth the price, located in a very small and quiet town. The inside was huge very pretty and had some amazing architecture. There were so many thorough descriptions and details about the place, I learned so much about the Portuguese and their history. There were statues, rooms and magnificent objects from when the monastery was working. It was easy to find yourself with alot of directions and instructions to see all the rooms. The view I preferred the most was inside the monastery, in the middle, where the garden was. This place deserves the detour.
Justine D — Google review
Its church, completed in the 13th century, was the first fully Gothic building in Portugal and remains one of the largest. The monastery is also famous for the tombs of King Pedro I and Inês de Castro, whose tragic love story has become legendary in Portuguese history.
Express I — Google review
Unfortunately it’s fully CLOSED. No information could be found why or for how long until an extensive search online. I fully support the people’s right to strike to get fair pay, I simply wish there was clearer information so visitors coming from other counties and continents could have known in advance and plan other arrangements.

Parks
Parque dos Monges is a 24-hectare park located in Quinta das Freiras, offering various areas such as Environmental, Zoo, Adventure, Thematic, Animation, and Accommodation. It aims to recreate the lifestyle of Cistercian monks through tourist animation activities. The park provides educational programs, team-building activities, family-friendly options, camping facilities including glamping. Visitors can enjoy a peaceful stay in well-equipped bungalows or tents overlooking the lake.
It is exactly what to expect, a place to relax from the city life and an alternative to normal bedrooms. One feels transported to Amazonia. Just the sunset over the lake surface animating the inner tent fabric while one lays in the soft bed is enough to make it worthwhile!
Alexandre P — Google review
Our stay was amazing! The location is wonderful, very peaceful, at least when we visited (end of November). The staff is very welcoming and helpful. Our bungalow was well equipped and the deck over the lake was the best spot. We asked for vegan options for breakfast and we were surprised to see that the staff really provided an excelent breakfast, with more options than many hotels (vegan milk and yoghurt, vegan cheese and vegan ham, fruit, jam, bread,... everything was delicious!).

super nicely decorated tents with a bunch of structure! there are a bunch of activities inside the park, like animals and little games and trails, but also outside the city which is super close by. truly a forest experience inside the city

One of the best places I know to come and just rest. You can enjoy some time off in a cottage or a tent, while in the middle of a park with a mini zoo and some other activities like traditional games in wood, wall climbing, slide, ... Recommended it to come and recharge batteries! 😁😁
Miguel F — Google review
Quite amazing experience. The rent was comfortable and the restroom was inside the tent. Everything is 5 star. The breakfast is absolutely top class. The entertainment for kids are cool specially zip line. The fruit trees and garden is heavenly. The tents are around the lake. The fishes and ducks are attraction too. The lake has piranhas too. There is a large gorilla which has been known to devour tourists who are not kind or speak with American accent.

We stayed at the fisherman's shed. Besides being small (althought this would not be a deal breaker), we could feel every spring of the matress. Also, it is really fancy to have blinds made of bamboo sticks, but they don't give any privacy, and you may wake up as soon as the sun rises. The windows should have blackouts. The park itself was nice, but there should be more maintenance, and also should take more care of the animals (for instance, there were a couple of dead fish and several others with signs of disease - clearly they don't provide the necessary conditions for them). Breakfast, served at the shed in a basket, was very complete, and everything was fresh. The room had microwave, coffee machine and refrigerator. Too expensive for the conditions given.

Amazing place with incredible views, entertainment and super helpful friendly staff! 5 stars to the boys Diogo, Diogo and Tiago who did an amazing job on the outdoor activities!!! Also the staff at the meet and greet were excellent!

Specialty Museums
The Museu do Vinho de Alcobaça offers a captivating journey into the world of winemaking in the region. Through engaging exhibits, interactive displays, and guided tours, visitors gain insight into the rich history and cultural significance of wine production in Alcobaça. The museum showcases the meticulous process behind creating fine wines and highlights the craftsmanship and dedication involved.
Fab place. Reach collection of vine related items from dirrerent centuries and regions. Museum is in old buildings of vine association. I was there twice and english guide is really friendly and has good knowledge of vines. After the tour you can do tasting. You pay for visit (Sunday free) and tasting depending on your vines choice.

Great little find. €12 each for a tour and tasting. Private tour as the only two there.Guide João who was excellent and very knowledgeable. Could be better signed as looked closed, a good sign on the road edge if allowed would get more people interested.

Fun little gem of a museum. It was just us two and it felt like a private tour. Be sure to walk around and checkout the grounds. Splurge and go for the top tier tastings.
Scott W — Google review
The museum it self is very nice, full of old bottles with wine and brandy ( oldest one is 200years old!) and it's the biggest exhibition in the EU. Machines and presses for wine production used are dated from 16 century. At the end is the vine tasting and the vines we were offered are very tasty. I can definitely recommend this place.
Roxy — Google review
This place is a gem! I loved seeing all the old equipments they used to make wine. Be aware tho if you don’t speak Portuguese, because this is a guided tour and the guide available when we were there only spoke Portuguese. They do have information sheets in English but not adequate enough. I particularly loved the big collection of antique wine bottles. There’s wine tasting at the end of the tour in a super cool looking room. Five stars if they could provide better job in providing information for international visitors.
Mimi D — Google review
A museum dedicated to the historic development of the Portuguese wine. It was a fantastic experience that helped us understand the early wine manufacturing methods, storage and commercialization. Very interesting to see how they adapted the old storage facilities to make room for the museum. The tour guide was very attentive and knew all the details. The wine testing itself at the end of the tour was very nice and we got to experience 6 different wines

Garden
Jardim do Amor is a charming green space located behind the Municipal Library, aiming to evoke the love between D. Pedro and Ines de Castro. It sits at the confluence of the Alcoa and Baca rivers, offering a unique experience for all forms of love. The garden is associated with the beautiful story of Pedro and Ines, who are buried in the Alcobaca monastery.
Lovely garden worth checking out if you’re in the area. The story behind is amazing 🤩
Kiana S — Google review
In the intersection of the two rivers it offers a peaceful hidden garden hidden enough and with view over a few interesting buildings. Among those the Aires Mateus house is a gem that unfortunately is not open to the public, as an architect I got lucky:
Alexandre P — Google review
There is a lack of careful preparation for each nook. It lacks brightness. Flowers are missing. The history of the rivers that embrace it remains to be lived. Its immense clearing lacks shade. It lacks romanticism. It remains to provide interaction with visitors through real notes from the story of Pedro and Inês and, thus, lead them on a loving journey. The elements of the court that welcome them as if they were kings are missing. The props for the most demanding visitors are lacking. There is no possibility of passionate holding hands when sitting on thrones. It lacks a fund that emphasizes the giant heart. There is no place to sit to contemplate the space and your better half. And it lacks strategy. It remains to be ensured that it is heard of, that it is discovered. It remains to be ensured that they are understood, framed… in different languages and accessible to all… without exclusion. Missing moments of dramatization that fix tourists and teach our history are missing. The identification of safe deposits remains to be Support is needed to facilitate easy automatic photography. It remains to be ensured that the love story runs through the city and that the experience ends at the tombs in the Monastery.

Restaurant
Nestled in the heart of historic Alcobaça, António Padeiro is a culinary gem that has been delighting locals and visitors alike since its establishment in 1938. Originally a humble tavern where bread was baked, this family-run restaurant has evolved into an iconic dining spot renowned for its authentic regional cuisine. The atmosphere at António Padeiro is warm and inviting, reflecting the rich history of the area while offering a menu filled with simple yet delicious homemade dishes.
Best restaurant in the region. The food is amazing and fresh and local. There’s culture in every dish! The space is great and super well decorated allowing you to feel at home. It is the type of restaurant that you can go with your family, your friends, your partner or even by yourself that you will always feel welcomed and well! Don’t forget to go to the toilet, it is beautiful 🤩 and dessert, have dessert!!

This is my second visit and we had no reservation, but we were lucky. Service was great, meals superior. You should definitely try the small entrada for 15 euros. Maravilha.

Me and my wife had dinner here last Friday. All went well with the booking. We had an available table right on time. Great "retro decor, friendly and professional service and the food was amazing. You can't come to Alcobaça without eating here. Restaurant is very busy, so booking a table is to be considered.

Fabulous food — the meat and desserts are top tier. The service could level up a notch, as they didn’t serve our wine glasses for example.
Marta M — Google review
This was my second visit at Antonio Padeiro. I sat on the terrace and ordered a Bacalhau followed by a floating island (montanha russa). The Bacalhau baked à la Portugueisa was excellent. The Montanha Russa, as expected, was far too sweet for my taste as it was covered with an egg yolk custard. Service was prompt and courteous. Overall a very good experience.

The food is out of this world !! You can carefully see the amount of love and dedication they put in each plate !! We tried most of the dishes, from meat to fish and all of them were outstanding!! 9/10 ... Staff are really polite and helpful and the dining room is cosy and beautiful. We will come back 100%. If you are in a big group I advise you to book first .

From the excellent food, the wine pairing by a connoisseur and beautiful decoration, this place is my favourite restaurant in Portugal. I had delicious croquettes with pine nuts and chorizo rice in the oven, my partner had pork rolled in glazed bacon, everything on point and very well prepared. The desert didn’t disappoint, homemade and traditional.
Coline T — Google review
Lovely restaurant with a rich local history, worth checking out before going or asking the staff to tell you about it. The food is great, without much fuzz to it - simple, homemade, well-served. At the end, they bring you a platter of all the local sweet delicacies and you’ll have a hard time choosing just one. The house decor is beautiful and very cozy. Gotta go back for the Sunday lamb. On note: if you have mobility issues (like someone in our party did) make sure to ask to be seated in the main room and remember that there’s quite a few stairs to the WC.

We had a wonderful meal here! All the dishes had an interesting twist, we were really amazed with the way everything was seasoned. Really enjoyed the way the chef has used different spices. As a bonus, the staff is very nice and dog friendly (which is quite rare in this area, specially indoors).

Great place for high quality steak. Price seems reasonable for good steak. The servings are generous while service is friendly.
Linea V — Google review
This is one of those places that makes you rethink your previous 5 stars rating in order to make it more just. My experience started by being denied a table in the place next door because I had a dog (German Shepard). I walked a few meters and met Antonieta, an extremely nice woman, who told me all dogs are welcomed in her restaurant and that we could even sit inside if we wanted (we did). The service was excellent! The food was great! The atmosphere is cozy! We head a great time and I'm sure you will too. Strongly recommend the duck accompanied by the house eed wine: São Miguel (alentejo).

A fabulous dining experience, from start to finish it was first class. The convert selection was a lovely start, with a yummy red wine helping to wash it down along with our mains - lamb shank and lamb rack - beautifully cooked and presented and squeezed in dessert of panacotta and creme brulee. We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner and look forward to going back in a few weeks time to try more!

Lovely spot to have lunch while visiting the Monastery. It caught our eye beyond the typical cafes that prevail. Food was delicious and fresh and waitstaff was very attentive and helpful. Even spoke English well! We had the 3 Tapas special and sat outside in the beautiful weather. Would love to come back for dinner as the dining room looks so nice. Highly recommend!!

Restaurant
Nestled just 3 kilometers from Alcobaça, Restaurante O Castigo is a charming and welcoming spot that meat enthusiasts simply cannot miss. This traditional eatery, run by Micael Pedras, prides itself on serving high-quality meats sourced from his own livestock, including indigenous breeds like the renowned Alcobaca spotted pork and black pork. Collaborating with local producers ensures that every dish showcases excellence in flavor and quality.
Another inland Portuguese gem of a restaurant where meat is phenomenal and value is immense. Attentive service, tempting desserts and strong coffee, accompanied with free liqueurs and aguadente. Steak is the specialty with wagyu, veal, chuleton and rubia Gallega breeds. Fantastic wine list at outrageously cheap prices. Don’t quibble…just go. Not suitable for vegans.

Very cool spot up in the hills. Staff super friendly and knowledgeable. Waiter recommended a great red for our steaks. Meat was cooked to perfection so good I had a second steak. Would go back again. Local liquors at the end is a lovely touch
Luke M — Google review
This was an amazing dining experience. We ate a superb 600g Nacional steak that was superbly grilled medium rare and served with salad, rice & black beans, a bread and garlic sauce and chips. The dessert tray is excellent too. It’s all in a traditional house style setting and full of locals. It’s so good.
Ian G — Google review
My favorite restaurant in a very long time! Of course, we ate all of the little extras on the table and padded the bill. The olives were terrific and the reason we started eating the rest, but the bread was also very fresh and delicious and whatever was in those little fried balls of heaven was for me! Then someone came to speak with us in English, thank God, and we ended up ordering without knowing what we ordered. That's not a first for our foreign travels. Anyway, we got three 3 steaks to share, all well seasoned, the best being the national beef, second wagyu and the third the aged beef, which was the inverse order of cost. We added a salad, had fries and rice with beans, and still managed dessert! That was followed by a clear alcoholic beverage and another cordial of red berries with some sweet little dough balls on the side. Service was ok, just different than home. No one checked on us until we were finished and we had to watch someone else leave to figure out that we paid at the counter. We would definitely, definitely return and recommend that you try them. Make a reservation to be sure as they were packed.

Great place for meat lovers! It’s a cozy restaurant on the side of a road and if you don’t know about it, you maybe wouldn’t notice it at first. However, it is a must try if you are in the Alcobaça region! It’s very popular so it is recommended to make a reservation. We tried all three different steaks, and loved all of them. The starters were very nice too. The staff is friendly and explains about the different cuts. We’ve been here twice already and definitely going to come back in the future!
Jasmijn T — Google review
First time I've ever tried Wagyu, and Rubia Gallega, and it was incredible. The service was fantastic, they were so attentive and lifted the empty doshes as soon as they were empty and we finished eating. Excellent attention to this detail. A meal I won't forget, thanks to the great company I had and the meal to complement it excellently. Thanks! ❤️
William W — Google review
We ordered the wagyu steak, asked about its grading and it turned out not to be Japanese wagyu, but a similar animal bred in Europe. The meat was nearly without any marbling and its taste was vulgar, resembling ordinary beef. It was cooked to a perfect medium rare point. Service was sub par, the restaurant is understaffed and although I had a reservation, I had to wait 20min to be seated while I could see several empty tables inside. The chocolate mouse was decent but not more.

Portuguese restaurant
Nestled beside the charming town of Casal das Arieiras, Restaurante O Cabeço is a delightful culinary haven that beautifully marries an elegant interior with a cozy outdoor ambiance. The restaurant's menu is inspired by the changing seasons, showcasing the creative flair of Chef Pedro João, who masterfully reinterprets traditional Portuguese flavors.
We visited O Cabeço for a very pleasant Saturday lunch and had an excellent meal. The 2 entree boards had a nice range of hot and cold nibbles that were more original than the usual cheese and fish paste offerings in other Portuguese restaurants. The main courses were excellent we had the duck strudel and breaded monkfish. The desserts were also well presented and the Baked Apple crème brûlée was marvelous.
Greg W — Google review
Absolutely one of the best dinners I have had since moving to Portugal!! I cannot say enough positive things about this restaurant. From the moment you enter the door you’re greeted with a charming host and the dining has warmth and character and so inviting. The service is excellent! The staff is friendly and very attentive. Then the food! Absolutely delicious! We ordered the shrimp with guilho appetizer to share and we were no going to order bread but was strongly suggest we order the bread because the sauce with the shrimp is amazing and we will want to soak up the bread, glad we took her advice because the sauce is to die for! I ordered the duck Margret…fabulous! I don’t often desert but something caught my eye and had to order it , it was the Alcobaca apple brûlée. It was so flavorful and unique because the brûlée was inside the apple! I’m a foodie and was so impressed with this restaurant and so glad I found it. I will definitely be back and Highly Recommend this restaurant and you won’t be disappointed. You should definitely make reservations and I found it best to contact them through facebook!

Had an absolutely amazing meal at a truly special spot. This restaurant is just outside Alcobaça in a unique, rural setting. It’s so idyllic. The place is tastefully decorated, and the staff are super friendly. We ordered some delicious starters (fried calamari in breadcrumbs, prawns in garlic oil, and a few tasty bites from the house) and equally fantastic mains. We had Iberian pork, grilled octopus, and for the boys, a risotto and linguini (pasta) with octopus, prawns, mussels, and mushrooms. So tasty… you’ll be licking your fingers! The service was incredibly friendly, and we enjoyed an excellent wine (the Douro Duas Quintos Branco 2023). This restaurant is a real hidden gem. Highly recommended for foodies who want to enjoy great food and life in a special place.

A wonderful place surrounded by nature! Rural animals like goats, cats, horses can be seen everywhere making up for a lovely scenery to appreciate while having your lunch. Meals taste wonderfully and the service is top notch. It's like a gourmet restaurant but with very generous portions (in fact, so much so I felt filled during the following hours). Be sure to call and reserve your place when lunching here as this restaurant is often fully booked.

Amazing food. I'd go back and try everything on their menu if I had the time. The variety starters were delicious, as were the moonfish and risotto and the duck and fries. Like another reviewer said, dessert is not to be missed. I had the sampler/mini set. It's the perfect balance, not too sweet like some other places. Lunch might be better due to having a view but dinner was all I had time for and it was amazing even without the view.

Really nice local in the hills above Alcobaçar. You park below the restaurant in a stable then walk up a path to the restaurant. We had the moonfish with risotto and the house style prawns. We also had the mixed entrees and for dessert I had the flan and my partner had the 3 mini desserts - creme brulee, pannacotta and mousse. Very nice, would go back.

Portas de Fora is a charming and cozy restaurant in Alcobaca, offering delicious meals at affordable prices. The friendly owner and staff are accommodating to tourists, making it a welcoming place to dine. With a variety of dishes to choose from, including the recommended shrimp "Portas de Fora," visitors can enjoy generous servings of flavorful food. The menu is available in multiple languages, and the host speaks five languages fluently.
We had secretos do porco, I asked with salad instead of batata frita. Food was very good! And we loved the service, the terrace with a view to the monastery and beautiful live piano play from music academy across the street :)

The codfish with shrimps was good but there was only 1 shrimp inside. we were 4 people ordering and he brought us 1 plate and after 20 min another plate and after 10 min another plate... we did not understand why and he just came to say that our table was not forgotten 15 min after he brought us the first one. when 4 people sit together they want to eat together. not 20 min apart in time. Maybe it was just a bad day for them but we are not coming back.

The best meal we've had in Portugal!! This is an intimate and friendly restaurant very close to the monastery square in Alcobaça. We ordered the dish of the day, and it was fabulous! It was a cheesy concoction of cod with a cornmeal topping, all baked in a nice-sized dish. (Very generous portion.). It came with a fresh lettuce and tomato salad with a light oil/vinegar/lemon dressing. We had a glass of the house white wine (delicious), and we shared a dessert afterwards. That dessert was also amazingly, mouth-wateringly delicious!! The prices are quite reasonable, and all the staff did a great job serving a full restaurant (due to a festival in town.). We highly recommend this restaurant!!
