Promenade Park is a charming Victorian riverfront park located in Maldon, offering a variety of attractions for visitors of all ages. The park features an ornamental lake, woodland walk, and kids' adventure play areas. Families can enjoy the Splash Park, beach huts, adventure golf, play equipment, tennis courts, sandpits, crabbing and model boating lake as well as petanque on site.
Great for an afternoon out, lots of parking, picnic areas, large playground, mini golf and mini zoo, short walk to boats with little cafes on the way

Promenade Park in Maldon is a fantastic spot for a day out, especially if you're looking to enjoy both green space and a bit of seaside charm. The park sits right by the water, with a small beach area that’s perfect for a paddle or just soaking up some sun. There are plenty of walking tracks that wind through the park. The open grassy areas are great for picnics, ball games, or simply stretching out with a good book. You’ll find a decent selection of food stalls, especially during weekends and events, offering everything from ice cream to tasty hot meals. Plus, with several pubs nearby, there’s no shortage of options for a proper sit-down meal or a refreshing drink. Public toilets are available and well-maintained, which is always a plus on a longer visit. Whether you're with family, friends, or just enjoying some solo time, Promenade Park has something for everyone. A great blend of nature, water, and local charm.
Dumi B — Google review
We visited the park in late September 2025. We were on a weekend glamping trip with our family, including the grandchildren. The park was lovely for the kids, as there is plenty to do and it wasn't too busy. There is good parking and we had no trouble finding a spot.
Linda S — Google review
A beautiful waterside park with many attractions, plenty of places to eat and lots of seating, a huge field for picnics and shady avenues of trees. If you can get here early in the morning as the sunrises, you’re in for a treat.
Denise — Google review
The prom is one of my all time favourite places. However as I no longer live in Maldon we have to drive and today we wanted a quiet grassy spot and we knew the far end of one of the main fields would do the trick after having to leave previous venue just before 5pm. We wanted to be there about 3 hours so we could gently sort out tea and eat it. You are talking 5.30pm to 8.30pm. I expected to pay fair enough but £8 for 3 hours parking on a Sunday evening is too much. If it was upto £5 we would of happily used and their would be a 5 star review. I do also think £8 for a full day is fair.

Such a lovely place to spend the day.. a zoo, crazy golf, woods, and a a scenic walk path. Lovely cafes and restaurants

Marina
Hythe Quay in Maldon is a captivating destination that beautifully showcases the region's maritime heritage. This picturesque quay boasts the largest collection of seaworthy Thames Sailing Barges, offering visitors a chance to embark on scenic sails around nearby islands. The area is alive with activity, from yachts at Fambridge Yacht Haven to ferry trips for seal watching or visits to Wallasea Island.
Steeped in history, this is an amazing place to step back in time, aboard the Hydrogen Thames Barge. We took a sunset sailing and loved every moment of our August summer evening adventure. Watching the crew pull up the ocre sails and cut off the engines, added to the tale. The platters of food were delicious and the whole experience was worth every penny. We'd definitely do it again.
Dee E — Google review
Been visiting Maldon for many years. Its well worth a visit to the Quay especially if you are interested in Thames Barges. We usually park the car in Promenade Park (pay) because of very limited parking at the Quay (1 hour) and walk beside the river up to the Hythe. Loads of free activities for children along the way, plenty of fast food and ice cream vendors, accessible toilets, loads of seating. There are 2 pubs at the Hythe. The Queens Head and Fish on the Quay. In my opinion the Queens head is much the better place, right on the quay, quick service, excellent food and beers, dog friendly, with very reasonable prices.
Michael P — Google review
Good place to see the Thames barges. Depending on the tide you can also go on a Thames barge cruise. The quay is nice to walk along right up to the end where there is a historic statue. There is a park for kids to play, a seafood shack and small cafe
Neil P — Google review
Maldon High Street leads straight down to the Hythe Quay where famous Thames barges sport their russet red sails in a splendid array of colour and charm. Trips are available on the barges depending the high tide times. The area has two main pubs and is the start of the pleasant promenade walk.

Wow what a fantastic Quay, lots of Old Thames barges, some being renovated, great pubs for drinks and food, great history here, there was vikings landed and fought off again and again, fantastic bird wildlife, its a great place for young children, an outdoor swimming pool and play areas, just love it.

The Moot Hall, a 600-year-old Grade 1 Listed building located in the historic High Street of Maldon, offers visitors a glimpse into its rich history. This iconic structure has served various purposes over the centuries, including as a manor house, prison, courthouse, council chamber, and wedding venue. The building features a unique narrow spiral staircase that leads to a rooftop offering stunning panoramic views of the town and river.
I was walking down the high street with a friend of mine when he meat a friend of his that said we should look around as it was an open day, so we did and it was an educational trip where we learnt about how the courts used to work look at an old town census went to the roof and heard the bells ring, a lot as it was midday. very nice place and staff well worth a trip.
David C — Google review
Had a delightful time being shown around the building. Guide was very knowledgeable, passionate, and understanding of my friend's fear of heights. Bouncing back and forth around the ground level, in between a secondhand goods sale, was a bit hectic but understandable. The steps inside are truly small, narrow and uneven - not recommended for people with mobility issues. On a clear day, the view from the rooftop is spectacular. Very worth the price.
Andy B — Google review
It's a shame the opening times are quite restrictive, as getting to explore this key building to Maldon's history is amazing. From the extensive history, to the unbeatable view, I would highly recommend a visit if you catch it when it's open.
Benjamin W — Google review
I attended a tour of the Moot Hall, it's such a hidden gem, even though it's in the middle of the high street I imagine there are a lot of locals who've never stepped inside. There's hundreds of years of history to learn about and the tour guides are very knowledgeable. I'd definitely recommend this to tourists and locals alike. The view from the roof is fantastic. Well worth checking out.
Paul E — Google review
We joined a tour today guided by John. Very interesting & informative. Would highly recommend this to all who enjoy history. Lots of steps to climb but fantastic views from the rooftop.
Andrea A — Google review
We had booked a tour of the building online. The tour guide was very informative and the building is a little gem of history. The view from the roof is really spectacular and the history of the place is immense. It has been a private residence, a court room, council rooms and prison. It has the most beautiful spiral staircase. Well worth a visit
Red A — Google review
Amazing building hidden in plain sight of the High Street, visited Maldon on Thursday and had the pleasure of a tour around this great building by Chris. Spiral staircase limits access for some people, my 90 year old Dad managed it OK! Wonderful views from the roof top. We didn't book, just happened to be there at 12:15 when Chris unlocked, for £5 it's a must do trip. Thanks again.

Military Museums
The Combined Military Services Museum in Maldon showcases a wide range of artifacts from medieval times to the present, including weaponry and spy gadgets. The museum aims to educate and entertain visitors about Britain's military history. It provides a comfortable experience with fully air-conditioned spaces and high-quality display cases for its collections. This nationally important museum is known for its genuine period items and meticulous attention to accuracy and detail in its displays, making it a hidden gem for those interested in military history.
I visited in May 2025. A vast collection of weapons and militaria, stretching back hundreds of years. Also, an incredible collection of items used by military intelligence during WW2 and into the Cold War years. Plus of course the Donnington Collection of over 700 firearms. There is so much of interest here, it is well worth a visit of a few hours
William A — Google review
Great place. Has 3 floors. Disabled and baby changing room on first floor then toilets upstairs. Lots of weapons and clothing. Small car park but it’s not that busy when we came. It was nice to visit and friendly staff. They prefer card rather than cash. You can book online then pay in person
Mel C — Google review
A wonderful museum filled to the brim with a wide selection of military memorabilia from across history. Compromised of about 3/4 rooms which are densely packed and well laid out. Uniforms, weapons, badges, ordnance and more from the middle ages to present. Staff were absolutely lovely and extremely knowledgeable willing to answer all sorts of questions. Spent around 2 hours inside but easily could have spent more. 5/5 would recommend.
Corey L — Google review
A hidden gem if you are into military memorabilia. The museum hosts the Donnington Historic Weapons Collection, a collection of weapons accumulated by MoD Donnington in Shropshire, over a long period of time. The curator is particularly knowledgeable.
James S — Google review
This was a superb find for me as looking for something to do. What an incredible museum with the biggest display of guns in the country. Over three floors this museum has displays of all original items from different theatres of war and includes , special forces, spies and home front. Spears, swords, uniforms and weapons. You will need a good couple of hours to see everything, very informative displays. Definitely worth a visit as the best that I have seen and a hidden secret. There is free parking, admission is £9.50 for adults. Open Wednesday to Sunday 10.30am to 5pm. When we arrived we were greeted by a very nice and knowledgeable lady, Julie Ann Miller.
Mark P — Google review
Around £10 per person, with limited parking on the site, but the area isn't busy, so you should be able to find parking. The museum is larger than it looks and it has a huge collection of scary things! No other way to describe guns and bombs! Recommend a visit! I spent a couple of hours there myself.
Clive F — Google review
What an absolutely fantastic hidden gem! One man's stunning, eclectic collection. Run by really enthusiastic and knowledgeable volunteers, who are present to share interesting facts and point out rare and unusual items and give more information when requested and answer our many questions! (I think the gentleman's name was Dave... thank you!) Free parking on site. Tickets very reasonably priced. Usually closed Monday and Tuesday, but open every day for school holidays. A list of items does not do the collection justice so I won't try, however the spy section was really cool and the Victoria Cross display. Husband is ex military and was really impressed with the scope and detail. The collection spans 3 floors and is well laid out in sections. If you get overwhelmed with everything there is to see, seek out the yellow labelled items (rarest items or something interesting/different) No cafe, just a coffee machine. Plenty of chairs to rest. Photos allowed. 100% worth a visit.
Rebecca L — Google review
This place is well worth a visit. I took my 10 year old grandson. All I heard while I was there was, "Nanny come and look at this", "wow nanny look at that". It's far bigger than it looks from the outside. Lifts on each floor and a drinks machine with seating area. I will definitely go there again.

The Maeldune Heritage Centre, located in the historic town of Maldon, is a captivating visitor attraction housed within the picturesque St Peter's Church. This center offers a blend of local history, art exhibitions, and tourism information. The building itself has a rich history as it was once a church, school, and library before being repurposed into its current cultural role. Visitors can explore the library upstairs to uncover fascinating tales from the past and browse through locally crafted items in the shop downstairs.
I had a private tour of the library upstairs, learning some incredible information about the books, the building, the history, the people... It's seeped in a rich tapestry of tales to tell. Downstairs, there is a shop full of items made by local crafters and artists. You could easily spend a small fortune (and I did). Every single person from the ladies upstairs in the library, to the ladies downstairs in the shop, were very friendly and embraced conversation. I could've happily talked all day. The combination of information and personal touches make Maeldune heritage centre a fantastic couple of hours that I recommend to anyone with a curious mind.

This is an incredibly important space for Maldon. Recently revamped to a high standard it is an excellent showcase for artists/makers and designers in the region. Highlighting the Maldon Embroidery by Humphrey Spender as a permanent showpiece, the gallery revolves around carefully selected exhibitions and offers quality gifts and cards in the shop. Restaurant
Le Bouchon - Brasserie & Hotel is a charming Georgian riverfront hotel located in Maldon. The Grade II listed building has been beautifully refurbished, offering elegant rooms and a cozy brasserie restaurant serving a delightful blend of French and English cuisine. Guests can enjoy the warm hospitality of the 24-hour front desk and complimentary WiFi during their stay. The onsite restaurant provides an intimate dining experience, while the bar offers a relaxing atmosphere to unwind.
The food is very good. This is a beautiful restaurant and hotel located very close to Chelmsford and a great location for venues as they have a private function room available ale to hire (which is what we did for a birthday). The room is also directly in front of the bar so not very far to walk in order to re-hydrate. Food came out as expected with no issues and everything was very well cooked. All in all a great experience that helped to make some great memories for a birthday celebration.

We haven’t visited Le Bouchon in a while but booked for Sunday lunch for two of us. Our table was at 3pm and we were able to enjoy a drink in the lounge and peruse the menu in our own time. Our food was delicious (roast beef and the 3-roast selection) and the service all round was excellent. We had plenty of food and a selection of vegetables which were cooked perfectly. We are looking forward to returning again soon.

I had a fantastic experience at Le Bouchon for my birthday. The room was very clean & comfortable making it a very enjoyable sleep. The food was brilliant, i had the duck breast, sirloin steak which was perfectly medium rare and a lemon tart for dessert. Plus a superb full English in the morning! All the staff were very helpful and smiley and going the extra mile! I look forward to going back!

We stopped in yesterday for an impromptu lunch - 5 stars across the board. The food was impeccable and the service faultless. You’d be hard pressed to find a quality dining experience like this elsewhere in Maldon. If it’s on the menu - get the pork belly & black pudding hash! Unreal.

Top marks for staff, food, location… probably the best uk hotel I’ve been in! Only one issue… lack of air con. But honestly they can’t be blamed for the crazy heat. Perhaps a better fan in the room would be an idea, but other than this everything was spectacular. Thanks so much for a lovely stay!

Brilliant hotel. Didn't stay there just went in for drinks. Went with friends and the staff showed us round hotel. We booked barge down canal, had drinks brought to barge. All staff were brilliant and made us feel very welcome. Went for Sunday roast next day and we're treated as if we were friends. Next time we're visiting we will be booking stay in hotel

The staff here were lovely and friendly. The Rooms and hotel look good. We liked the breakfast. Major problem is that the walls are so thin. We were in room 10 and we could hear the people in the room next to us talking all night. They were not yelling, just talking and laughing. Eventually we fell asleep but it was disturbing. Second, in room 10 the headboard makes the most horrific squeaking noise every time you roll over. So loud, that it wakes you up each time.

Stayed here for 2 nights hotel is lovely style and clean. The staffs were welcoming and professional. There are bars and restaurants in the hotel Would recommend 9/10 The room was not so big and there is no refrigerator in the room. This restaurant was recommended to me by a friend. My sister and I popped in at lunchtime and we were not disappointed. Zoltan our waiter was so friendly and kind and we were very well looked after our whole stay. My sister is vegan and there were lots of vegan choices for her. We chose the vegan nachos to start which were delicious. My sister chose the vegan burrito for main and I had the chicken fajitas. Both dishes were amazing and delicious. We both wished this restaurant was in Dunmow where we live. We will be going back shortly for dinner again. It's excellent service and great food. Thank you Zoltan and all staff for a great lunch. See you soon.

Whether you're in the mood for a three-course feast or just a quick snack, their menu features classic favorites like beer-battered cod and wagyu burgers alongside more unique options such as roasted pork belly with seared scallops.
Our first visit here, and we loved it. We enjoyed lunch and a drink. The selection of food on offer is excellent. We had the mussels and minted lamb pie from the specials menu, all of which were lovely. The staff were all very friendly and welcoming, the service was great. A highchair was provided for our baby with no problem, and it's good to see that dogs are welcome, too. We look forward to our next visit.

First visit to this pub, Sat outside as it was sheltered and in the sun. I had the Grilled Chicken with new potatoes and salad, hubby had the Pork Pie Ploughman's. It was all delicious. Our little puppy enjoyed a Doggy Ice Cream too. Highly recommend this establishment, good service, friendly staff and lovely fresh food. Completely dog friendly inside and out. We parked in the public car park 5 minutes walk away but the pub does have it's own small car park.

Disappointment. We went for a lovely birthday meal but we were rudely interrupted by the owner who asked us to quieten (or leave) when were making very minimal noise. There was nobody else in the restaurant with us so unsure what disturbance we were causing. The other side of the restaurant were making much more noise. I can only assume we met her on a bad day.. The other staff however were very friendly and the woman behind the bar was excellent!

We usually stop off here to grab some drinks and food for the kids. But not anymore. Bought some chips as takeaway, but then decided to sit outside on the benches. We ordered some coffees in normal non-takeaway cups. One of the staff then complained to us that we’re taking up a table for their customers when we ordered takeaway chips. Why does it matter? We are customers. We have paid for food and “non takeaway” hot drinks. I found it petty and a lousy way to treat people with children. Won’t be coming back.

Whether you're celebrating a special occasion or simply enjoying a casual outing, this tea room welcomes guests with open arms, even accommodating larger groups without prior reservations on weekends. Visitors rave about the attentive and friendly staff who enhance the overall dining experience.
Simply the best find! Savory cheese scones were deliciously light. The crab sandwich was yummy. Sadly, we were too full to try the amazing looking cakes. The staff were on it and so very friendly.

The food was lovely and the staff were really polite and helpful, unfortunately I had to wait a while for my food, but I was warned of that before sitting down, so not too upset about it. The food was a bit pricey for what you got, but worth it for a pretty place to sit, watch the world go by and have a bite to eat.

Visited this tea room today for my wife’s birthday. We had the crab sandwich and beef toastie from the specials menu alongwith the potato skins. Food was well presented and good quality, staff very friendly. Sandwiches were priced around £11 each as were the skins. Food was quite tasty especially the beef toastie which was lovely. The crab sandwich was ok but crab didn’t seem that fresh so guessing it was frozen. Potato skins were tasty but could have been crispier on top as they were very soft. Salad garnish was a bit disappointing as didn’t come with any dressing so just eating salad leaves quite boring. All in all not bad but could be improved. Location is lovely, Would visit again

I had a fantastic birthday afternoon tea at the Lock Tea Room. We didn’t have a reservation and just turned up, even though they don’t take bookings on weekends, they were so accommodating and managed to fit our group of 13 without any trouble! The staff were warm and attentive, and the food was fantastic. My mum said the Ploughman’s was the best she’s ever had and my sister was especially happy with the gluten-free afternoon tea—she often says GF options can be hit and miss, but this one was a definite hit. A lovely, relaxed afternoon. Highly recommended!

Was given an afternoon tea voucher, value £50. The afternoon tea was pretty basic and if bought individually probably cheaper. Took cakes home but weren’t very nice so threw them away. The tea room itself was very clean and comfortable . Staff very friendly. I would visit again but not have the afternoon tea.
Karen W — Google review
Tiptree cream tea rooms was always somewhere we took our friends when they stayed with us. This included friends from the UK and across the world. The service has always been fantastic and various locations showcased the beauty of our region. This visit was rather disappointing. We had an afternoon tea; the sandwiches were tasty and very full. However the scones seem substantially smaller and the slices of cake just bite size. We usually cannot eat the cake and take them home in a box to savour later on. I had a Mother’s Day afternoon tea voucher for £40, bought only 3 months ago. The cost of the afternoon tea was now £50. The voucher was honoured. I know prices have increased - indeed everything has - but a 25% increase and smaller portions is, for me a step too far. Either reduced portions or an increase cost but both is rather hard to swallow. Unfortunately we will be looking at other venues for an afternoon teas or a cream tea in future.

Visited this restaurant on Christmas eve for our annual dinner with friends. What a fantastic restaurant, service was impeccable and the food was delicious, portions are of a generous size. The boregi was my favourite and I would recommend the veggie moussaka which was lovely. Friends went for the mixed grill and they couldn't finish the portion. We were the last group to leave and the manager was kind and did not rush or force us out, instead we we were told to take our time and they patiently waited for us to finish our drinks and food. The lunchtime 2 course for £11.95 runs from 11am to 4pm (I think) and is an incredibly generous deal. The portions appeared small but were perfectly filling. The staff made a fuss of our daughter, and we very well looked-after. The food was a little slow to arrive, but it was fresh and looked great, so who cares. We will definitely be back for lunch again, I highly recommend.

Our first visit was a lunch on a weekday and the restaurant was not busy. Staff were attentive and helpful. The lunch Deal is two courses with a good selection to choose from including vegetarian options. Plus flat bread and dips to get you started. Good seating clean tables and the food was excellent. Background music was just that— gentle and kept low- - thank you for that. All in all it’s a great place for lunch and we will return. 12.5% is added to the bill for Service Charge, which is ok as long as you can say no if not happy??

The ambience, the decor, the music: it's simply stunning. The food in itself was piping hot with generous portions no-one could finish and my lamb sarma beyti was dripping with sauce and cheese. It was so rich and filling and I loved it!! I highly recommend if you're in need of a good quality restaurant around here. Only gripe would be that the soft drinks came half empty which seemed to be a shame.
