Narusawa Ice Cave is a small lava tube cave located near Mt. Fuji and Lake Kawaguchiko in Japan. It features pillar-like ice formations during the winter months, reaching as far as 21 meters underground. The cave was formed by the eruption of Mt. Nagao in 864, which hollowed out vast underground caverns.
An incredible experience visiting this place.
I went during the summer, and although it was scorching hot outside, the temperature dropped drastically as soon as I entered.
Even though the cave isn’t very deep, the difference in temperature was significant.

Ice cave is wonderful to get away from the hot weather. I was worried by their maps that made it look like we could run into a room with water or fall down a tunnel, but the handrails kept us on path. It is a short 20 mins but be warned the stairs and passages are steep, wet, and can be slippery. There is one narrow and low ceiling passage of about 20 feet. There is a couple of places with low ceiling to duck down. I would not recommend this if you have mobility problems and a couple of sections gets dark. There are bars to hold onto but one bar seemed a little wobbly. You can use one of their free helmets but there were only 5 total helmets there— there was one other group of 3 people at the cave while we were there and they didn’t have helmets so not sure if the facility only has 5 helmets for all visitors. There is one section that has the ice to see on the left and right. When we went, there didn’t seem to be as much ice as other people’s pictures. It was cool to see the natural ice formation and not something I would go out of your way for, but if you are in the area and interested in geology then drop by. They also had clean restrooms.
Cheap but cheerful cave experience amongst beautiful naturescape.
Visit during winter to see ice pillars. We visited in autumn & signs pre-warned ice pillars had melted, so we knew what to expect. Still went for the experience!
Steep but short climb down 21m. Cold, so prepare accordingly. Watch your head for low hanging rocks. A short section where we had to pretty much crawl through - a unique experience! Take as long as you like, but approx 10min round trip.
1.4km trail walk (30min) to Wind Cave - can purchase combo tickets. Well worth it for something different and a bit of a nature walk. But you can also drive there.
A unique and memorable stop near Mount Fuji. The Narusawa Ice Cave takes you through narrow lava-tube tunnels with impressive ice formations that stay frozen all year. It’s short (so take your time and make the most of it) but fascinating, about a 20-minute walk through chilly, dim passages that feel like an underground adventure.
It can be slippery and tight in spots, even a section to almost crawl, so wear good shoes and a light jacket. The staff are friendly, and signs are available in English and Japanese. Great to pair with the nearby Fugaku Wind Cave for a full experience. Easy to access by car, plenty of parking onsite and leading into, or local bus, and well worth the visit if you’re exploring the Fuji Five Lakes area.
There is a gift shop attached where you can also purchase food items.
We also visited the Wind Cave, this experience was a little more comfortable, ticket entry can be purchased for both caves at each site.
Narusawa Ice Cave is another place I visited during my trip to Mt. Fuji. Visiting this ice cave offers a great opportunity for physical activity and exercise. I'm glad I can handle it. The Narusawa Ice Cave is not particularly impressive. However, it's fun if you have a whole group of friends who can go together.
Although short, the ice cave is a unique and refreshing experience. Even in summer, it’s cold inside, and the crouching and squeezing through narrow passages to go deeper makes it all the more fun.
Located in the Aokigahara Forest at the northwestern foot of Mt. Fuji, Narusawa Ice Cave is a small lava tube formed about 1,150 years ago during one of Fuji’s eruptions. The temperature inside remains around 0–3°C throughout the year, allowing impressive ice formations to persist even in summer.
The walking path is short — about 150 meters — leading down a narrow, slippery tunnel with solidified lava walls and a distinct chill in the air. Two main chambers display preserved ice: one illuminated with soft blue light, the other protected behind metal bars.
A full visit takes around 10–15 minutes, and while it’s interesting from a geological perspective, the experience can feel brief — essentially a short descent to view the ice and back. It’s best to buy a combined ticket that includes Fugaku Wind Cave nearby, for a more complete and rewarding visit to the Fuji Five Lakes Geopark area

Photos do not do justice to this place. Fuji is magical & meditative. I would have loved to stay close to Mt Fuji for a few days. And that is what I plan to do. Just gazing at it from Kawaguchi river makes you feel peaceful. I am already planning another trip to Japan and this time will be staying in the vicinity of Fuji. Enough said.

I arrived late in the day when Mount Fuji was completely obscured by clouds, having exhausted other sightseeing options, and entered more out of curiosity than expectation. What I discovered was far beyond anything I had anticipated. The admission fee includes access to scheduled musical performances featuring massive automated organs, live opera singers, and grand automated music organ concerts that demonstrate incredible engineering and artistry from a bygone era.
What truly impressed me was witnessing the staff’s dedication during closing time, as they carefully maintained and adjusted the numerous antique automated instruments with obvious expertise and care. This daily ritual speaks to their commitment to preserving these mechanical marvels for future visitors, ensuring each performance maintains its magical quality.
The gift shop offers an extensive selection of music boxes in various sizes and musical selections, plus unique items like violins. While perhaps not as comprehensive as Hokkaido’s famous Otaru music box shops, the quality and sound of their music boxes are genuinely beautiful and worth considering as souvenirs.
The magical climax of my visit occurred when the clouds suddenly parted, revealing Mount Fuji in perfect view from the French village setting. This unexpected moment created an absolutely breathtaking backdrop that had every visitor frantically capturing photos of the stunning combination of European architecture and Japan’s most iconic mountain. The contrast between the French-style buildings and the majestic mountain created such a surreal, picture-perfect scene that it felt almost too beautiful to be real.
This destination successfully combines cultural education, musical entertainment, architectural beauty, and natural scenery into one cohesive experience that appeals to visitors of all ages and interests.

This place is just awesome and full of music. Live music events during the day in different halls.
I really don’t know how to describe the place , it’s a big museum and shop together all around music. All in one it worth paying the entrance fee - 1500 Yen / pers.
At the entrance you’ll receive a leaflet with the music events ( hour and hall ) and I warmly recommend to see them.
We saw that there is also a restaurant on site. Didn’t enter so we cannot say hoe it is.
If you are in the area and you are a music lover and love to see musical instruments we highly recommend this place.
By the way there are o lot of shops with wonderful stuff.
We spent there approx 2,5 hours.
If you are coming by car there is a huge parking place just across the street , just in front of the museum on the other side of the road.

The best museum I have ever been too; however, I am biased since I collect music boxes. The performances were amazing and the self-playing instruments that they had on display were some of the most interesting and biggest I have seen. These machines are all in great condition and have obviously been fully restored.
It was amazing to see a skilled opera singer perform with antiques music boxes. This made for a very unforgettable experience and was my favorite part of our trip to Japan. Very excited for my next visit.
Hidden gem of Kawaguchiko! You can make your own music box in the gift shop. If you're in the area, I definitely recommend this place. It will be one of the most memorable souvenirs you will ever have. Also the views of Fujisan were beautiful!
This was a wonderful addition to our trip. The unique musical shows including opera and sand art were highlights of our trip. The entry cost of only 1800 yen seemed very reasonable for the quality of service and entertainment. There was a gorgeous garden with roses and photo viewpoints of Mt Fuji. Even the fountain show was special.

A wonderful and enjoyable experience for everyone, worth attending and spending some time doing all the exhibits you can. Very eye opening to the history of music and can easily find yourself spending hours learning new things and having a good time.

I wasn’t so lucky that day since it was pretty cloudy, and Mt. Fuji didn’t show up. But honestly, the atmosphere around the lake was amazing—nice and cool, not too hot or cold. I saw people cycling around and others just walking or exercising. It felt really peaceful and relaxing.
Absolutely the most scenic bike ride I have ever done. Even though it’s not the cherry blossom or snow-capped season, the view of Fuji mountain is quite spectacular from every angle along this lake.
One of the most serene lakes i have ever seen in my life. I visited in autumn and the weather was slightly cold but very lovely.

When i visited, Fujisan was not visible so the visit was disappointing overall. But the lake area is pretty and well maintained. There are many types of flowers planted and serve as a small consolation prize when Fujisan is not visible. There is a also a souvenir and food shop in the area.
Lake Kawaguchi or Lake Kawaguchiko as I called it offers one of the best and most picturesque views of Mt.Fuji. The lake is like serenity itself with stunning autumn foliage.
I highly recommend taking the lake boat cruise that offers 20-minute excursion to the lake. You can have sn amazing view of Mt. Fuji on the boat cruise itself.

Lake Kawaguchi is a stunning, natural lake surrounded by mountains and hills. The water was very pristine. There is a track and road around the entire lake which you can use for walking. It is also popular for people to hire bicycles to ride around. I found the area to be calming. Mt Fuji can also be viewed from here if weather conditions are good.

Sanrokuen is a traditional barbecue restaurant located in a 150-year-old building that offers an authentic dining experience reminiscent of ancient Japan. Diners can cook their own food on skewers over a charcoal grill at the center of their table, choosing from various set courses featuring meats, seafood, tofu, and vegetables. The restaurant's rustic ambiance with a thatched roof and dark wooden interior beams adds to the unique dining experience.
Very nice BBQ Japanese setting serving a good variety of seafood and meats. I would recommend ordering ala carte unless you're a tofu, fishcake and rice ball person. The ambiance is relaxing and suitable for chit chatting or business executive discussion. Perfect place during winter.

Sanrokuen 山麓園 is an excellent place for a traditional, authentic Japanese robatayaki. The restaurant is in an over a hundred-year-old building. I am happy to have an enjoyable experience with all my family and friends in our Mt. Fuji trip.
The restaurant is fantastic, and the ingredients they use are very fresh and of the highest quality. They also offer the best service. However, please don’t forget to make a reservation. Sanrokuen is usually booked weeks in advance.
It’s an unique experience though on a higher end side. We ordered the 22k yen premium set for 1 which was enough for 2.
It will be better if there are more instructions and guidance given to grilling the food as I was stupidly watching my neighbours how to cook certain dishes
This place takes you back to medieval Japan vibes when you sit around a bonfire and grill, warm, cook your food. Say no more. I recommend if you come to Fuji, find this place. You really need to come and try it.
Amazing BBQ experience plus a nice bowl of hoto. It was such an experience to bbq the food yourself. Will come again. Do note that there is a waiting time during peak times so do plan ahead.
This was more of an experience than anything. The food was great, although I do wish the noodles had come out together with the meats. The staff were really helpful, especially since we didn’t quite know what we were doing and were a bit overwhelmed.

Located just a short walk from Kawaguchiko Station, Fuji Tempura Idaten offers a modern and relaxed dining experience. The restaurant serves a variety of freshly prepared tempura dishes at reasonable prices. Guests can enjoy an array of options including shrimp, soft-shell crab, vegetables, and even fugu pufferfish. Additionally, there are vegan choices available made with seasonal produce from local farmers.
We had lunch at this popular <i>tempura</i> restaurant after morning visit to Kawaguchi-ko area and about 30 minutes wait in queue in front of the shop. You just need to put your name on the wait list and when your number called, be ready.
I ordered the assorted prawn / shrimp tempura with extra Yamanashi / Yoshida Udon. My wife got the cheap Udon + 1 shrimp tempura set, and an extra fried veggie <i>kaki-age</i>. All dishes are great, and the <i>tempura</i> were top notch. The batters were crispy but not oily so good frying technique is applied. The Yoshida Udon are thick, a bit firm and yet has nice chewy texture when you bite them. Good combo with the <i>tempura</i>. All dishes cost us around ¥ 5,300 after consumption tax. We got free cold water drink from the bar, so all costs are related to food dishes but they're still good value for your money considering good quality and portion. Please note that you can apply different salt condiments to your dishes as per your preferences, but we love the <i>yuzu</i> and <i>matcha</i> salts.
You order dishes using the tablet ordering system and they have the English option. You can pay at the cashier using V/MC payment cards so another big plus for international customers. The restaurant is quite spacious and you can choose to sit on the bar like us or the table. The ambience is good and the place is bright and clean, good environment for family lunch.

A lot of tourists come to this tempura restaurant and yeah my friends who visit japan also recommend us as well. To be honest there were so many customers but no staff cared about people who waited outside. so i went inside and asked then I can go without waiting.

First before tempura come they served you rice and soup and I ordered soba , soba came first but need to wait tempura around 10-15min which you know.. rice was gonna cold andddd soba.. the noodles become like extended i was a bit disappointed. When tempura comes. Well yes it’s delicious but to be honest, i cannot say wow oh my goodness it’s toooo goood.
Naaaah. It’s delicious as normally!!! Flour was a bit too thick for me. Yeah it’s not much oily that’s why everyone like it I think? But.. hmm well ok it’s just good. If I need to wait for this restaurant?

I wanted to have tempura and noodles after a long ride from Tokyo to Mt. Fuji. We found this famous restaurant on Google. I decided to give them a try. We are lucky to have the last big table when we arrived at the restaurant very late in the evening. I knew they were good as soon as I walked into the restaurant. They're swamped, and the food smells good. The tempura and all other dishes are very delicious. The service is also excellent. We have a very enjoyable meal after a long day.
My wife and I had the mixed tempura and were was very disappointing. The batter was too thick and heavy and the ingredients not of a high quality. The dipping sauce was also underwhelming. As a result, the tempura was not tasty at all. Both my wife and I did not finish our food and we agreed it was the worst meal so far this trip in Japan (It's been 4 days). We would not recommend it.
Amazing place to eat. The udon noodles were my favorite and the tempura egg. My husband also liked what he ordered. Highly recommend the this restaurant.
This restaurant consistently serves the best tempura in the area. I visit every time I come to Kawaguchiko. The place is suitable for everyone—whether you're dining solo, as a couple, or with family. It can get busy around lunch and dinner, but the staff speak good English and provide excellent service.
The tempura was just average — nothing memorable. The only thing that impressed me was the fish suridane, but since we have similar seasoning in my country, I didn’t buy any.
The grilled chicken was quite disappointing. There was only one staff member working at the time, and she seemed to be handling everything by herself. She forgot to give us a dividing plate, so I couldn’t start eating until I waited a long time to get her attention.
Also, I found the overall pricing quite overpriced for the quality and service provided.
One of the few restaurants open late at night in the Fujikawaguchiko area. It's known for its tempura dishes, so we ordered the Fujisan Tendon set, arranged to resemble Mount Fuji and suitable for 2–3 people. The set includes miso soup and tempura sauce, which are self-service at a dedicated station.
The food took quite a while to be served, as the restaurant was full even at 8:30 PM. The atmosphere was lively and crowded, partly due to live music.
There was nothing particularly special about the tempura or the sauce. Its main highlight is the very large portion size — even enough for up to 4 people. However, the price is quite high, likely due to its location in a busy tourist area.

Looking at Mount Fuji from an open-air hot spring is a tranquil experience that can help ease the stress of travel. The facility has excellent views of the towering mountain, so you can soak away your troubles and still feel like your trip was worth it. There are three baths with Mount Fuji views, and two of them are open-air. Driving to Fuji Yurari is a steep uphill journey, but the onsen itself is worth it for its peaceful surroundings and therapeutic hot springs.
A little pricey, I thought at first. But then I realized it was definitely worth it! It cost 1,700 per person. Towels are included in the fee; there’s shampoo, conditioner, body soap, shaver in the baths.
Not only is the view of Mt. Fuji great from the outdoor bath, but it was also so fun exploring the different baths they had - from the mist sauna and cave bath to the carbonated onsen and fragrant baths. Not sure if they change the herb in the fragrant baths, but it was lavender when we went, my favorite flower!
Tattoos aren’t allowed, but no one’s checking and most people don’t mind nowadays as long as it isn’t too big and intimidating.

Relaxing & authentic hot springs, lots of baths (indoor, outdoor, hot,, warm, cold, etc) and dry/steam saunas. Down to earth vibe without the glitz or glamour. Can definitely spend hours in the facility, with a restaurant and rest areas and a couple massage and body scrub offerings. Private bath areas also available to rent. Nothing says Japan like a hot soak with a great up-close view of Mount Fuji. Can get crowded on holidays and weekends.
Amazing experience, they pick you up from the station and drive you directly to the onsen.
Do be aware that mount Fuji is not visible all the time, we were lucky but there is no guarantee. The food they have in the restaurant is not that expensive and the massages are soul healing.
The cool thing is that for everything you just scan your bracelet and then pay when leaving so that is really handy since you don't have to have money with you and can just enjoy the trip.
A popular Onsen often visited by both locals and tourists exploring the lakes around Mt. Fuji. The outdoor bath offers a stunning view of the mountain. The on-site restaurant is cozy, comfortable, and has a wide-ranging menu.
It’s a nice onsen with different baths in 2 floors. However, the restaurant is limited accepted guess only, so we need to go out for meals. It could be better if they can expand the restaurant.
Couldn’t go to the spa facilities as it is all naked and I have tattoos but stayed at the restaurant and chill area. Restaurant is nice with many food options, self ordering and super fast delivery. Views to Mount Fuji aswell ☺️ you pay everything at the end and can also use lounge chairs to chill.

The service experience was terrible… I simply asked where to make a reservation for the private onsen (hot spring), and a young female staff member at the check-in counter impatiently told me it was over there and threw the towel for the onsen directly on the table. After soaking in the onsen, I bought some iced milk from a vending machine, but the front desk still charged me 300 yen… While paying, I saw several Asian tourists communicating with the young female staff member using a translation app, and she gave them an impatient, disregarding attitude…😥
I went with my husband and the bath was awesome. We booked a private bath instead of open air public ones. We felt refreshed. The restaurant was also decent and we find our evening to be one of the more enjoyable evening of the Kawaguchiko-Mt Fuji trip. Thank you to all the staff members for helping us despite having very little in ways of communication.

Nestled in a cozy setting with a charming French ambiance, Troisieme Marche is a quaint cafe that exudes a homely atmosphere. Located near Lake Kawaguchi and the Kawaguchiko Music Forest Museum in Japan, this cafe offers an extensive menu of delectable cakes and also features a gift shop. The decor includes antique furniture and dried flowers, creating an idyllic retreat reminiscent of rural Europe.
Delicious cakes and absolutely stunning interior! We tried chestnut-matcha and seasonal fruits cakes. I have never tried chestnut-matcha one before, it has more chestnut flavor than matcha, but I really enjoyed. The place overall allows to stay up to 1 hour there.

This place has been such a highlight so far into my trip that I had to review it the same day I went here.
Had the Iced Latte (Irish Cream) & Iced Latte (White Chocolate & Strawberry) TWICE in under 6 hours. I loved it that much.
Had the rasberry cheese cake which was equally good.
Everything about this place is top tier - the staff, the environment, the music. Just amazing!
There are varieties of cakes to choose and look delicious.
We order 3 types of cakes and drip cofffee. The banana custard pie, chocolate pie was great. Their drip coffee also not bad.

Dropped by on a Sunday around 2:30pm and had to wait about 20 minutes. Plenty of parking, which was nice. The coffee was alright, but I’d definitely add an extra shot. The lemon cake was great! Staff were friendly.
Only downside is you may feel the pressure to leave once you’re done because there’s a line. Not really the kind of place to chill for hours. Perhaps it was a Sunday…
The best part about this cafe is definitely the atmosphere. Jazz music playing with cozy interior decorations. The strawberry was fresh, and the cake itself wasn’t too sweet, which was good.
Awesome cafe! Cookie Cream Cheesecake was the best cheesecake ever;) It was soft but not too soft and had very creamy rich flavor yet not too heavy. Coffee was also good and they have a variety of coffee and tea. Plus, they have cute accessories, clothes, kitchen items...etc.
The only thing that I want to ask them is the coffee cup. They use paper cups only even for there, not taking away. Since they sell cute coffee cups, I'd love to have coffee with them!
This cafe is extremely cute. Unfortunately it doesn't have a view of Fuji due to another mountain being in the way.
I had a hot latte and the cookies & cream cheesecake. The presentation of the cheesecake could've been a bit better, but the taste was excellent; very creamy & delicious, beyond what I had expected. Coffee was decent quality too.

Shaw's Sushi Bar & Dining is a unique sushi establishment near Kawaguchiko train station in Yamanashi, Japan. They are known for their exceptional sushi and the use of rice flour for their tempura batter, catering to those with celiac disease. The restaurant offers gluten-free soy sauce upon request. Despite being a bit pricey, the quality ingredients and exquisite presentation make it worth the cost.
We had a delicious meal here last night, everything was so fresh! The staff were very accommodating with my partner's gluten allergy. Fresh seafood and quality ingredients. We got the vegetarian and gluten free set meal, the blue fin tuna set meal and the assorted tempura. Make sure you line up as they are only open for a short window at lunch and dinner. The best meal we have had in Japan. Highly recommend!

A 2 minute walk from the station and a gem to have your first meal in this beautiful town.
We luckily got seats immediately but one sushi set option was already sold out.
We chose the vegetarian set meal- it was superb. The colours, texture and balance was incredible. The veg tempuras were crisp. My son enjoyed the Sashimi Bowl meal. Fresh and filling.
Amazing sushi! The fish was some of the most fresh I have tasted in Japan. Everything was well executed. They sell out of items very fast and are only open for an hour and a half. So if you want to go plan to show up at 6pm when the doors open. It's definitely worth it though.
Great gluten free plant-based lunch set menu and super friendly and efficient service. The gluten free tempura with matcha salt was wild. Well done Shaw’s Sushi for taking care of people with allergies and doing it so well.
Authentic Japanese cuisine with fresh sashimi. The place is stylish and comfortable, and I really enjoyed the atmosphere. The food was very fresh, and I was lucky to get a table without a reservation. Definitely recommend coming here!
Wonderful experience at Shaw's last night! Went in alone. Service was quick and the presentation of the food was fantastic!
I can highly recommend the Assorted Roll Set, along with the 3-piece Nigiri. It was a full meal, the sushi was incredibly tender!
Very nice set meals which I am sure everybody will fine something suitable. We had the salmon set which comes with 3 small rice bowls of 3 different types of salmon. The appetizers included a salad, sashimi (different fishes), small tempuras and chawanmushi. The dessert included miso soup and yuzu mochis. Cozy environment. Lady manager spoke very good English. A great meal after Mount Fuji hike.
Our first meal in Kawaguchiko and first decent meal for our Japan trip. Food and ambience were great. One of the rare sushi places In Kawaguchiko. After few days, we still think of this place. 😋
