Nature & Parks
Kotohiki Park offers a variety of natural and cultural attractions, including blooming flowers, seaside sunsets, and forested trails. Visitors can also explore Buddhist temples and admire an impressive sand sculpture. In addition to these sights, the park boasts interesting historical sites alongside its picturesque beach and spacious grounds. This lovely destination provides ample opportunity to appreciate Japan's stunning natural beauty and rich cultural heritage in a peaceful setting that is not overly crowded.
Interesting historic site...also a beautiful beach and park.

Kids loved it, close to the beach and a great viewpoint a few minutes walk up the mountain available. However it's infested with weird big flying bugs (don't sting but annoying and gross). Be sure to use bug spray

It is shameful and a disgrace that the Japanese authorities allow so much waste to be thrown into the ocean. There is an immense amount of plastic trash floating in the water off Ariake beach, and plastic is littering the beach itself. If this is in the top 100 of Japanese beaches, I fear for the future of the oceans around Japan.

Shinto shrine
Shrine
The Takaya Shrine is a Shinto shrine located in Kanonji city overlooking the Seto Inland Sea. Accessible by car or foot, visitors can reach the shrine through a steep climb up several flights of stairs or via a bumpy car ride. Although it may be difficult to locate, the stunning panoramic view from the top of the mountain makes it worth visiting. However, crowds of loud tourists can detract from its peaceful atmosphere.
Came during golden hour and it did not disappoint, The drive up was a little precarious, but definitely worth it. Make sure to if you are driving that you use the parking lot behind the shrine as the destination. The walk up to the shrine is slightly steep, just be warned.

U can drive or come by taxi, 3-4000 yen if u missed the bus. Or a walk from JR station, I recommend a walk if weather is nice. Really relaxed and it worth every penny.

Driving uphill a bit tougher, but not much traffic on weekday. Take 5 minutes climbing up, not very hard. Beautiful view up top, simply gorgeous.

One of the famous attractions in Shikoku, known as the “Gate in the Sky.” The view from here is absolutely stunning. We visited in late July under the scorching sun, so we decided to drive up. The road is extremely challenging, barely enough for one car, yet it is a two-way road. On our way down, we even encountered oncoming traffic, and one car that was not very confident made us keep reversing to give way. After parking (free), there is a short but steep walk up to the shrine and the torii gate in the sky. Despite the tough drive, the view makes it well worth the visit.

December 1st: I was worried I would miss sunset but I pushed it and got up in 45 min. You could show up at sunset and probably still see a nice twilight view at the top, but it will be a dark hike up and the ground is uneven like hiking in a forest. Only certain parts are paved and the stairs are at the very end. It is quite steep most of the way up. depending on your pace expect a tough 45min to climb 1.5hr hike up and a careful hike back down. Conditions will probably matter a lot, I wouldn’t do this in wet conditions.

The Mog Champ sends his regards. This is one of the most beautiful places I've been during my 5 week trip in Japan last July. Honestly, I found this place through Instagram and if it wasn't for a random reel, I wouldn't have known about this at all! The view at the top after an Incline hike is so deserving and rewarding that you would love it so much and appreciate the surrounding perspective from the peak of the tori gate. Make sure to bring a lot of water and good shoes with grip! I was here when it rained a day or two prior and the path was a bit challenging despite the day being sunny and dried up as well. It would take about an hour to hour and a half to get to the top depending on your pacing, and about the same to get back down as well. It's a well-maintained point of interest too! めっちゃいい景色くぽ! Mogliest Regards, Your Mog Champ

On March 29, 2023, my wife and I drove up here when the sun was setting. The panoramic sight was gorgeous and was worth the effort of climbing up the twisty narrow roads Ip here. We should have stayed here until the sun had set. But we made the wrong decision in our attempt to see sunset at the Chichibugahama Beach (about another 30 minutes’ drive) as well.
Peter C — Google review
Instead of the Seto Inland sea, only sea of fog can be seen when we visited Takaya shrine. Still, it's an amazing view point. The winding road up to the shrine is narrow so you have to drive carefully.

Beaches
Chichibugahama Beach, located in the town of Mitoyo on the northwest coast of Shikoku, is a popular and picturesque spot frequently captured by photographers. During low tide, the beach features large tide pools that beautifully reflect the colors of the sky, especially at sunset. The experience at this beach varies depending on the tides and weather. During high tide, it's suitable for swimming and sunbathing with shallow waters extending quite far out.
It is a nice sight, but requires the time of day and weather conditions to be right. If you want one of those iconic reflection shots it cannot be windy. The best times of photo are either in the morning, when the sun is opposite the sea (so the people are well lit), or in the afternoon or evening for silhouette shots.

20250322 If u r a tourist and free to plan ur itenary, avoid coming at weekends. Maybe due to better weather for the week, at the weekend or school break, the day I went was full of people, no parking space nearby and a bit windy. With all the high expectations due to excellent photos shared by lots of people, the first view of a crowded normal beach was a bit of anticlimactic to me. We did try to enjoy the beach by trying all sorts of photo taking, but there were simply too many people around. The view was good though.
Ric W — Google review
I was at the beach on a rainy day and didn't get the reflective shot as expected. However, I really enjoyed the serenity and the surrounding of the beach.
Ekavit C — Google review
Beach with a nice atmosphere but really it depends on the weather of the day, if you are looking to get one of those iconic reflection shots. The short walk along the beach is also nice and it gives you a sense of calmness.

Good place to visit. Come at dry tide to get better reflection. Good spot for sunset. Perfect picture will need to come at good time and some good luck. Check website for better info.
W. L — Google review
Quite a nice place but the transport was not very convenient. My friend and I weren’t driving and so we needed to take the last bus scheduled at around 630pm. This was a miss as the sunset was at around 7pm and by then the light and scenery would be fantastic.
Sean C — Google review
This is a beautiful beach that can be enjoyed very differently during high and low tide. Depending on what experience you're looking for, it's best to check the website for information on the tides as well as the weather. During high tide, it's a normal beach where you can swim or sunbathe. The water isn't too deep either, so an adult can walk pretty far out before needing to swim. During low tide is when this beach experiences most of its crowds, especially on days with good weather and little to no wind. Because of the way the beach is formed, pools of water that are great for reflection photography form and it's gained a lot of popularity due to this. If you're not fond of crowds or don't care about taking any reflection photos, I wouldn't recommend visiting during peak times. If you are after photos, I recommend going during the afternoon to secure parking and take photos both with the blue sky and the sunset. If you can, I also recommend bringing a tripod with a remote release for your camera or phone, but if you don't have that option, there are also very kind volunteers who will take your photo for you. They provide umbrellas for props and guide you through some poses. Do beware as it gets closer to sunset, the line for the volunteers gets very long. Every time I've visited, the atmosphere has been fun and people are very friendly. I've seen people offer to take photos for each other too. While there is the occasional person who doesn't pay attention and walks through the pools, most people are pretty respectful and try to pay attention to their surroundings. Have fun!

Sights & Landmarks
Zenigata Sunae, a stunning sand art installation shaped like an Edo period coin, is a must-see attraction located in Kotohiki Park. Visitors can admire this impressive sculpture from a hilltop observatory that offers breathtaking views of the surrounding area. The journey to the observatory is accessible by foot or car, though caution is advised due to its narrow one-way streets. Parking options are available for both disabled and regular vehicles, making it convenient for families and groups alike.
If you want to view the coin you should go up to 銭形展望台, from there you get a great view over the coin and the sea behind it. There is also a cool temple behind there with lots of cats!

It’s mainly this giant sand sculpture really, not much to see elsewhere. The park itself provides a nice walk along the sea but really that is all.
Kenny C — Google review
This place is a hidden gem… I went there around sunset time expecting the view would be more spectacular. The view was majestic, meeting my expectation… In order to see the coin shape, u need to go up to an observatory place nearby. The road on the way to there has lots of curves, and it’s narrow a bit, so drive safely :-)
Yuki — Google review
Not much to see here but it's a pretty nice to walk around. The area is clean and overlooks the sea. There is also a bit of history as to the creation of the sand coin. Quite interesting if you're into history. However, on top of that there's not much else to sightsee or do around here.

It is a very large coin-shaped monument molded directly out of the white sand of Ariake Beach. From the car park area of the Ariake Beach, you can walk to the reach the viewing point. For us, it was a 10 mins walk and be prepared to climb staircases. When you meet an open space with tarred-road, there’s a ‘forest route’ on the left, follow this way and continue walking for about 3 mins to reach at the viewing point. It is said that for viewers who lay eyes on the massive coin-shaped sand monument, they will be blessed with longevity and healthy life and prosperity. It is learned that the sand art is curated and surrounded by the pine trees which could be used as a barrier for resistant to wind and rain, and the maintenance of the sand-art is performed two times in a year.

Visited at night. There's an observatory that overlooks the coin and the town nearby, which is a 5minutes drive up a narrow road. Pretty nice place to stop by along the way if you pass by by car, but not sure if it's worth your time if you're taking public transport as there isn't anything else other than the coin.

(Translated by Google) A beautiful five-arch structure reminiscent of a medieval castle - it's amazing that this nationally designated important cultural property was built in the early Showa period. It is the only surviving multiple arch dam in Japan, and one of Kagawa's proud civil engineering heritage sites. When you see the dam up close, you'll be overwhelmed by its power and beauty of form. During the "Yuru-nuki (water release)" event held in the summer, water is released all at once with a thunderous sound, creating a spectacular sight. This is truly a spectacular dam. You can get a good view of the whole view from "Toyosuike Water Reservoir Park" downstream, which is also a recommended photo spot. Dam cards are also distributed, so if you're a dam lover, this is a must-have photo. It is easily accessible by car, and there is a parking lot. This dam has it all - history, structure, and scenery - so it's definitely worth visiting. (Translated by Google) August 30, 2025: I'd been curious about this dam for a long time, so I finally visited for the first time. Its retro appearance is reminiscent of a medieval fortress! [Location] It's located in the Onohara district of Kanonji City, just a short walk up the mountain. There are some narrow sections along the way, but it's not too strenuous. [Parking] There are parking spaces for disabled people and standard vehicles in front of the dam, and about 5-6 parking spaces and restrooms above the dam. Large vehicles might be able to fit in the lower parking lot, but that's just enough space for one vehicle. I arrived at 7:30 in the morning, and there was no one there, so I was able to see every detail. Even though the water wasn't flowing, the water was flowing gently, and I could hear the birds chirping and cicadas chirping. It was so refreshing! In front of the parking lot is another retro brick bridge, with a gazebo and restroom on the left, and a grassy area and the dam itself on the right. The dam wasn't releasing water, so I was able to walk all the way to the bottom, which was super exciting! lol Looking up from directly below was incredibly impressive, and in the dam's groove? I saw a mysterious valve and something resembling a legendary sword! The dam's surface had turned white, representing its 100 years of existence, and it was full of sex appeal... Near the gazebo was an equally impressive water intake. You can play on the grass here, or just quietly contemplate the dam. Next time, I'd like to see the yuru-nuki (dam water release)!

(Translated by Google) I arrived at the restaurant around 8am on a weekday in early August. Families and couples left the restaurant with satisfied looks on their faces, heading towards JR Minoura Station or their parked cars. The restaurant is really right next to the station. When I entered, the waiter checked how many people were in the group, said, "Please sit and wait for about four more minutes," and asked, "What would you like to order?" I ordered a small bowl of udon noodles in a saucepan (380 yen). The owner runs the restaurant by himself, and is very busy boiling the udon, frying the tempura, and manning the register. Inside, there are table seats in the center and counter seats around the perimeter, but it cannot accommodate large groups. Once the noodles were cooked, the owner asked me, "Would you like them as they are? Or heated?" and I replied, "Heated." After boiling and rinsing the noodles, he reheated them and served them in a bowl. I poured the broth myself, topped it with fried tofu (200 yen), and paid. After that, I added the free toppings of green onions and grated ginger to my liking, and then ordered the free dried sardine tsukudani. The noodles were thick and not very chewy, but had a pleasant bite. The broth had a pleasant, unobtrusive flavor that made it easy to gulp down. The fried tofu had a refined, light flavor that didn't overpower the flavor of the broth, and was thick and satisfying. I remember thinking when I ordered that the shrimp tempura was 150 yen, so the fried tofu was more expensive! But the deliciousness of the fried tofu made there made it well worth the price. Also worth mentioning is the dried sardine tsukudani. They're probably made from dried sardines that have been used to make the broth, but it was incredibly delicious. It had an exquisite sweet and spicy flavor that made me wish I had kept more. If I visit again, I would like to try other tempura besides the fried tofu, but I think the dried sardine tsukudani is a must. It has the appearance of a long-established self-service udon shop, and it has a nice feel with the unique charm of a unique shop. There was a wait of 10 people, but we were able to get in after about 20 minutes. There are table seats in the middle and counter seats the rest, so you just sit wherever there is free. The restaurant is run by two men. The udon had a light, chewy flavor with a hint of dried sardine stock. Customers come in nonstop, so there's no need to stay long, so I'll leave a seat for you. Thank you for the meal. If you're on the hunt for a delightful dining experience, look no further than うどんや カマ喜ri. This charming udon restaurant boasts a relaxed atmosphere with outdoor seating that invites you to unwind while enjoying your meal. The thick, chewy noodles are crafted in the traditional Sanuki style, providing a satisfying bite that will leave you craving more.
Tried 4 different type of udon- cold and hot. We like them all. Best ever udon and tempura I ever had! Great atmosphere and service as well. Highly recommended?

A very nice atmosphere with great service. They also had an English menu. Everything inside looks very cute and it's a great spot. The food was very delicious and my favourite udon I've had in Japan. I'd definitely recommend stopping by!

At first glance it looks like a stylish café, but in reality it’s an absolutely amazing udon shop. The first surprise is the goats in the parking lot. The udon is thick and chewy—the classic Sanuki style. I was also intrigued by the days, a few times a month, when they serve takikomi gohan (seasoned rice). In any case, the food is outstanding, and this is a place I’d love to visit again and again.

When I arrived in front of the restaurant, the parking lot was extremely crowded. There are about 20 parking spaces on the premises, but there was a line of cars waiting for a space. Fortunately, I was shown inside the restaurant right away, but I had to wait a little while to park. The udon did not disappoint, with thick, chewy noodles that were very satisfying. This restaurant offers full service, where you order after sitting down, so while you can enjoy freshly boiled udon, it does seem to take a little longer for the noodles to be served. Also, you cannot choose the tempura yourself like at self-service restaurants; it is served as a set meal. This is a restaurant recommended for those who want to take their time to savor delicious, authentic udon. Allowing yourself plenty of time when visiting will help you enjoy it even more. Kanakuma Mochi and Udon is a charming eatery that exudes a traditional ambiance. This cozy cafe offers an array of delightful dishes, including the popular udon noodle soup adorned with delectable mochi stars. The menu is thoughtfully translated into English for convenience. In addition to their scrumptious udon options, this establishment boasts a rice cake shop as well.
Wonderful restaurant with friendly service and delicious food. They have a well translated menu in English if it is necessary for you. I had the udon with grilled mochi and it was very delicious.

Famous for their mochi udon that I ate every time, though their other udon dishes are good too. Always crowded and everyone drives there so it must be good. Even if there is a queue there is the usual fast turnover for an udon restaurant, although in part this maybe because the seating is not the most comfortable. Service is friendly and efficient. If you are in the area, worth a visit.

(Translated by Google) Authentic Kanakuma Mochi Fukuda Founded as a teahouse on Kanakuma Bridge, this is a long-established restaurant that has been serving udon for over 100 years. In the past, it was introduced on Kenmin Show that people in Kagawa Prefecture eat udon with bean paste, and that was certainly the case back in the day. Although this culture is on the verge of disappearing today, if you come to Kanakuma Mochi, you can try the Anmochi Udon Tempura. But, I'm sorry... I don't really like sweets, but it's disgusting and I can't touch it even if it's a joke (´;ω;`) I also recommend glutinous rice such as okowa, so it's better to give up on that. Zoni udon 640 yen, Inari sushi and shrimp okowa 280 yen, total 920 yen (tax included) What about rice in udon? I'm sure you're talking about this, but the presence of rice is indispensable when drinking the dashi soup. Mochi is called a mochi shop, but there is something that is clearly different from other places, even the inari is intense. Kanonji Temple, where Kanakuma Mochi is located, is also a production area for Iriko, so it has its own characteristics. It doesn't have an elegant taste, and it has a bitter taste from being thoroughly cooked, so it seems that pros and cons will be divided. On average, the noodles are flat and don't feel like they're being made by hand. I've said it many times, but the mochi is from a mochi shop, and it's really delicious (*゚∀゚*)♡ Lately, my work has been slow and I've been turning down most remote projects, but when I eat something like this... I want to go to Seisan often. (Translated by Google) Honba Kanakuma Mochi Fukuda is a quiet riverside udon restaurant run by a mochi (rice cake) maker. This was my first time visiting, but unfortunately, they had run out of udon. There were six bean-jamchi (shiro mochi and mugwort mochi) left in the display case, so I bought some to take home. Many staff members seemed to be tidying and cleaning the store, but the atmosphere was cheerful. The bean-jamchi I took home was very soft, filled with gently sweet bean paste. It was elegant and the best bean-jamchi. Next time, I'll come back for more udon. [Additional Note] I'm back for more. This time, I arrived before opening time. There's a bridge called Kanakuma Bridge in front of the store's parking lot, and I crossed it to get to the restaurant. The bridge is just wide enough for two minicars to pass each other, so caution was advised. Also, the road in front of the Kanakuma Mochi store is quite busy, so be careful when entering the parking lot. The store is popular, with customers coming in to buy mochi before it opens. The store is surprisingly spacious and clean. The mochi section and kitchen are on the right. As you enter, you'll find items like rice balls and inari sushi directly in front of you. The cheerful voices of the staff create a great atmosphere. As it's a service store, they'll come to take your order once you're seated. This time I ordered "kake udon" and "an zoni udon." Since I was there, I also bought a rice ball assortment to take home. I chose two packs: "sekihan and shrimp rice" and "shrimp rice and inari sushi." The kake udon had firm noodles that were chewy as soon as you bit into them. The noodles were a little flat and uneven in thickness, probably because they were hand-cut. This added to the nice texture. The noodles were not the chewy type that's popular these days, but had a firm wheat-like texture, similar to the texture of the dumplings in dango soup. The broth had a gentle, sweet flavor. The toppings were a thinly fried omelet, square fried tofu, and wakame seaweed, which was quite luxurious. The anmochi zoni udon was a bowl of udon noodles topped with anmochi. In Kagawa Prefecture, mochi filled with red bean paste is apparently included in New Year's zoni, and I felt like I got a taste of that flavor. The mochi was browned and fragrant, and the gently sweet red bean paste went surprisingly well with the broth. After returning home, I ate the rice cake set I had bought as a souvenir. I think the shrimp okowa was made with dried shrimp? The chewy shrimp had a nice texture and a strong shrimp aroma. The subtle shrimp flavor and the chewy texture of the rice were amazing. The inari sushi was also packed with plenty of ingredients and had a delicious, juicy flavor. The atmosphere and the tasting udon were both top-notch, making this a great udon restaurant. [Additional Note] This time, I came for cold udon. I ordered "Grated Daikon" (Dried Radish Bukkake). I was looking forward to cold udon, as it brings out the flavor of the noodles. When the udon was brought to me, it was shiny and glossy. It was topped with grated daikon radish, ginger, tempura flakes, lemon, and green onions. As you can see, the noodles are twisted and curly. This is evidence of their firmness. I immediately tried them, and the firm, curly noodles brought a delicious balance to the broth. The grated daikon radish and ginger also seemed to have been thoroughly squeezed to remove any moisture, which absorbed the broth and created just the right texture. This udon restaurant simply serves delicious noodles.

Shōhachi Udon Kotohira is a delightful stop for anyone exploring the area, especially if you're on your way to the famous Kotohiragu Shrine. Upon arrival, guests are greeted warmly by the manager who offers a taste of their signature soy sauce udon. Although only cold soy sauce udon was available during my visit, I couldn't resist ordering it. The thick noodles paired with a light and flavorful soy sauce were simply irresistible!
Skip the udon shops along the main parade and come to this one, mere minutes walk away! Don't let the prices fool you (a mere 550yen for a lunch set), these are full sized bowls of the best udon in town! This price includes a rice ball and a stick of oden, which was very smart, because you won't stop at one! The oden is one of the best I've had, with an amazing miso sauce to top it off at an incredible 50yen a stick. Warm and friendly shopkeeper. Highly recommended!

The miso soup and oden were delicious, but The udon noodles were a little thin and hard, so the texture was not compatible with large dishes. The current rating of Google Maps is 4.4, which is completely unworthy. It's like a udon restaurant in a tourist area. Self-service restaurants, which are popular with locals, are much cheaper and delicious. Also...this is wrong...the energetic guy who is serving the customers...he is extremely friendly and gives a good impression to the customers, He was angry at the old man and woman who were cooking in the kitchen in a really bossy tone. Although he is very friendly towards the customers, his attitude makes the food taste bad. What's more, in front of the customers, the old man cooking the food was so angry that if he had misunderstood the order, he was about to burst into flames. Also, the onigiri was salty.
