Bacharach

Bacharach is a town in the Mainz-Bingen district in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It belongs to the Verbandsgemeinde of Rhein-Nahe, whose seat is in Bingen am Rhein, although that town is not within its bounds. The original name Baccaracus suggests a Celtic origin. Wikipedia.

Restaurant
Altes Haus, which translates to Old House, is a historic half-timbered building dating back to 1368 and is considered one of the oldest preserved structures in Bacharach, Germany. The house now operates as a restaurant with a limited menu but is immensely popular due to its heritage and historic ambiance. Visitors can explore the interior of this fairy tale-like building while enjoying a meal.
The restaurant is truly located in an old house as the name suggests, which means as old house in German. Three of us had dinner here, all three entries are good, traditional German food and very well done. The desert little warm chocolate is delicious. The ambiance is lovely and we loved the charming deco in the room. The waitress was attentive and fun to chat with. Three entries two drinks and one desert the bill came to about 90 euros. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Bacharach

I arrived for a dinner on a Monday evening. The restaurant was fairly full, so two of us were seated at a very large table. The waitress was fairly friendly and spoke some English. She made a very nice recommendation for wine. The food was great! This is an incredible place to have dinner since the building is so old. It is very nicely decorated.

I ate here in summer 2018, and I honestly have never forgotten this place. I had a tasty lasagna, and like everywhere else in Bacharach, the view of the old streets from the outside seating area is gorgeous. The lady who ran the place was very kind and friendly. We had an amazing conversation about paintings and horses. Some people from my travel group forgot to pay and she very kindly sent them a reminder. I hope she still works there, because it has been 7 years and I still think about this place. I hope to return again someday.

Altes Haus takes you back in time from the moment you step inside! We sat in what could be described as a front reception room with a piano, and just two tables. Very intimate and gave it a nice atmosphere. We ordered a local wine and were delighted with its sweet fruity character, and it was very refreshing. The service was also very good, and friendly. For our meal we had the Pork Schnitzel, and the Meatballs in cream sauce with boiled potatoes. With this we had a medium dry local wine. Another great hit. The food was very tasty and well presented, and we greatly enjoyed it. The meatballs was particularly good. For our dessert we tried the apfel strudel with ice cream, and the chocolate cake, both served warm. The strudel had a wonderful flaky pastry, and went down really well with the vanilla ice cream. All in all it was a lovely experience in the middle of this very nice town on the banks of the Rhine, with the traditional castle on overwatch on the cliffs above (easily reached by the stairs starting by the church). A definite recommendation from us. Also as a lovely surprise the couple on the table next to us was a well travelled one from Berlin, and we had a very nice conversation with them throughout.

We has been in Europe for almost a month and we ate here twice one of the best meals we ate! The flavor of the food was so good! We had dinner and dessert both nights. Amazing! The experience was also enchanting because the waitress shared a book with us with history of the city including pictures of the owner as a girl!
Donna D — Google review
Got the “Sausage Salad”, really did not see the sausage in the salad, looked like strips of ham instead. Though the translation might be wrong. Wasn’t a big fan of the salad dressing either. But the atmosphere is amazing, the garden was serene and there was a live pianist! Maybe do not order the sausage salad there!

Limited food menu maybe 8 items. Plenty of spirits. Classic German Hause with many old historical items and photos. Basic dishes. We had schnitzel... we received schnitzel, French fries after salad.

Very nice place to have a light meal - they offer limited hot cooked meals which was fine as the menu offers good balanced variety of options. The food was delicious, good selection and recommendation of wine and excellent service!

Castles
Hostel Burg Stahleck Bacharach is a unique accommodation located within the 12th-century Burg Stahleck castle, offering a picturesque setting among vineyards and overlooking the Lorelei Valley. The hostel provides unfussy lodging with a restaurant, lounges, and a bistro, as well as complimentary breakfast for guests. While not offering guided tours, visitors can admire the breathtaking views from the castle courtyard.
For a German Youth hostel, this is first class. Imagine living in a castle that is 1000.yrars old and has been converted to a youth hostel in 1920. Also, the gastronomy was quite a step up from other hostels we have stayed at in the past. All in all, highly recommended.
Lars L — Google review
Hi all at Hostel Burg Stahleck I was there last week at the Karate Pratix seminar. I loved it there, and to be honest who wouldn't, I spent four days in a castle sleeping in a tower like a princess, with amazing views. And I met some lovely people. The rooms were comfortable and spacious, we had our own bathroom and shower. There was two of us sharing a four person room. The food was delicious, and the chef had no issues with me asking for a gluten free option. He was so kind and always had a delicious meal set aside for me. When making your reservation mention to the staff if you have dietary requirements, so the chef can prepare beforehand. The other two people who were lovely were the man behind the counter in the dining hall, and the lady on reception anything I asked for they would get for me. Be prepared for a 15 minute up hill walk to the castle, which is mainly wooden steps and path. It is quite steep and make sure you have water with you, as you will need it. The only thing I could criticize on was the early check out, as we were having breakfast between 8 and 9, and our karate class started at 9. So this did not give us much time to get up, dressed, fed, strip beds and tidy a bit, and put the last few bits in our bags. But other than that the view was amazing and the atmosphere was so relaxing, the castle was beautiful and the staff were amazing. See you all next year Thanks for everything Deirdre

We haven't stayed here but visit Castle site. Very nice and beautiful place. You can visit inside as well as outside. Also view from it spectacular. Would advise to visit.
Sergiy M — Google review
The location and the view! We booked the IV+ room category to have a private bathroom and fullboard. The room is very small but clean, just enough for an overnight stay. The parking is located on the street and you'll have to walk going to the castle. The dinner was simple and delicious, same with breakfast (no scrambled egg or sausage). The check-in/check-out was quick and staff were great.
Tester F — Google review
I did not stay at this hostel, but only visited it as a tourist attraction. There are few routes to reach Stahleck castle. Moderate climb. Nice view of Rhine river from here. Stahleck Castle has been destroyed and rebuilt a few times throughout its history. It was massively damaged in 1644 during the Thirty Years’ War. However, because of the Count Palatine’s strong emotional attachment to it, the castle was rebuilt in 1666. During the Nine Years' War, the castle was finally blown up by French troops in 1689 and remained in ruins. It was only in 1925 that Stahleck Castle was rebuilt according to a historical model. Now the castle is not open for visitors but serves as a youth hostel. *information from the Internet

OMG!! This place is fantastic, our room for our family of five was beyond our expectations. We will definitely stay here again. We will come back through. And breakfast!!
Chris G — Google review
It's a literal castle on the mountain and you can sleep in it, hiiiiighly reccomend. Also the staff is super nice and helpful, just such warm people.
Spacepoo B — Google review
Lovely location staff very helpful and food and facilities are very good. Rooms are a bit basic but clean and tidy and bed was comfy enough the pillows were not very substantial so if you need a firm pillow bring your own. The views from the rooms and the rest of the castle are superb and all in all a lovely place to stay. One word of warning the steps up from the town are a bit steep so those with mobility issues would struggle but taxis are available to take you up via the road.

Observation deck
Postenturm, also known as Post Tower, is a historic observation tower located on a hillside surrounded by vineyards in Bacharach. Visitors can take a short walk through the picturesque vineyards to reach the tower and climb to the top for breathtaking views of the town, including its iconic St. Peter Church and Werner Chapel ruins, as well as the scenic Rhine River.
Short steep hike with a beautiful view. As can be seen by my over exposed shots the light would probably be better in the afternoon for photos.
Jeff C — Google review
Postenturm (Post Tower) is a former defensive tower and now an observation tower. You can see the whole town of Bacharach and Rhine River from top of the tower. P.S. DO NOT FOLLOW the long walking route that Google Map provides to come here. There are direct paths from the old town. You'll find the signs somewhere.
Li-Chen L — Google review
Free of charge! Breathtaking view of the Bacharach in the Rhine Valley. The tower stands about 65 steps above the ground, offering a fantastic point that’s perfect for photos. Is make of wood Interestingly, the tower has a quirky English name: the "Cat Tower." However, the German name doesn't seem to reference this at all, which adds an amusing twist to its identity. This unique feature, along with the picturesque surroundings, makes it an ideal spot for a memorable visit.
Vasya K — Google review
A wonderful observation tower. It's not possible to climb on the top floor but even though it has a beautyful view to the city. There is a bench on the lower floor, where it's possible to take a break because climb to the tower isn't the easiest. There is also a huge wineyard nearby where it's possible to have a nice walk.
Yerbol B — Google review
Great viewpoint. Free entry.
Thomas J — Google review
An observation tower on the periphery of the town and the slope where vines are grown. It is not far from the town centre. Nothing spectcular about the tower but it offers awesome views of the town with its outstanding St. Peter Church and Werner Chapel ruins and of course the Rhine River. The surrounding vineyards are beautiful as well especially during Autumn when the grapes ripe and the leaves of grapevines turn yellow and reddish brown. After the tower, you may walk up the slope to see the ruins of part of the town walls and towers.
Michael C — Google review
Although overcast & raining on the day of our visit, it was well worth the walk up to the Postenturm for the views over the town & along the Rhein river.
Dave S — Google review
Picturesque and very photogenic place capturing the beauty of Rhine Valley in one snapshot. It was only a short 5 to 10 minute walk from the Barabach village, either on the main path (more comfortable) or through the vineyard (steep and a bit dangerous as I almost slipped on the gravel). The entry to the tower was free and after climbing a couple of floors we were rewarded by a stunning view of the village, Rhine valley and the Barabach castle. It was worth the effort and the sweat to come all the way up as this kind of view is hard to find! Visited in May 2022.

Religious destination
Wernerkapelle is a Gothic chapel in Bacharach, Germany, known for its partially destroyed red sandstone structure. The clover-leaf-shaped chapel was built between 1289 and 1430 but suffered damage during the Nine Years War in 1689. It is situated atop a hill and can be reached by climbing a short flight of 99 steps. The site holds historical significance, with a plaque commemorating the Jewish population who endured persecution.
A beautiful historical landmark. Unfortunately it was closed when I visited it, so there was no access inside. It has a wonderful view to Rhine and the city. It's a bit hard to find a way there because the road is really tiny but it is worth a visit.
Yerbol B — Google review
Werner chapel was erected after the murder of a 16-year-old boy called Werner, who was buried there. The Jewish community in Oberwesel were blamed for his death - an accusation which was completely unfounded. During the ensuing riots, 40 people were killed. The Jews were eventually exonerated by King Rudolf I who was convinced the accusations were groundless. In 1689, the French blew up the nearby Stahleck Castle during the Nine Years' War, sending falling rocks down upon the chapel, collapsing its roof. The ruined chapel was later renovated into a skeleton monument, complete with a plaque from Pope John XXII, recognizing the wrongful accusation of the Jewish community. *Information from the Internet Easy climb from old town to ruined Werner chapel

Came here today on a hot August Thursday afternoon with my three kids ages 6, 4, and 2. We parked at the Pakplatz Rheinuter Bacharach (paid though low cost parking with many spots) right near the Marktstrasse / Markturm entrance into the downtown area. We used Google maps to get to the chapel, though once we got to the St Peter Kirch there were signs pointing down the correct path and up the stairs to the chapel, after which point you couldn't miss it. I think it took us less than 10 minutes walking at my 4yo's slow pace to get from the lot to the chapel. Once there, we were able to walk around the front exterior of the chapel, but were not able to get inside, though it was easy to see through the fence/gate. The views from the terrace in front of the chapel area amazing. I toyed with the idea of going on up to the castle / youth hostel 5 minutes further up the path but it was too hot and late in the day for my young kids. We ended up going down the stairs and getting ice cream at Eiscafe, then going to the Spielplatz am Rhein near the parking lot (a playground with a great view!). The chapel itself is absolutely stunning. It seemed set up for a concert, which I imagine would be amazing to see, especially at sunset or during the night hours. I absolutely recommend seeing this if you're in the area. I'd love if we had been allowed to walk through the interior, but the exterior itself was enough to make the 1hr long drive worth it for me. There were very few people there during the 15 minutes we were there. The path was largely shaded once we left the parking lot, at least in the late afternoon. We passed toilet facilites on the way from the parking lot to the Marktum; they were below ground via stairs. Edited a few weeks later to add photos from a second visit during evening hours! (Gate was still open even though Google Maps said it was closed)
Danielle C — Google review
It is not really place to see. Don't get me wrong the place is clean and beautiful, but really nothing exactly to see. Also do not visit the place during the winter, everything will be closed. It would be a ghost town.
Sarah K — Google review
This is an important landmark of Bacharach dated back to 1289 and was destroyed in the War of the Grand Alliance in 1689. So what is left now is a ruined a High Goethic chapel that appears delicate and filigree. Though the ruins are impressive to look at, it carries a lot of historical significance.
Michael C — Google review
On photos it looks bigger. Anyhow unusual beauty. Even ruins rebuild between 1986-1991 are still making this gothic church worth seeing. Other attractions in this place makes it must see place.
Kamil N — Google review
What a great landmark in Bacharach. The Chappell is left in ruins, but it's still so amazing to look at. The Chappell has a dark history behind it.
Michael B — Google review
This is located atop the hill with a short flight of 99 steps. This was once a popular pilgrimage, as a stop-over for the pilgrims heading to Camino de Santiago in Spain. However during the 9 years war, in 1689, the bomb meant to destroy Castle Stahleck fell here and destroyed the church. All that's left here now are the ruins.

Restaurant Zeus, located in the picturesque town of Bacharach in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, offers a delightful dining experience. The food is delectable, with a wide selection of 49 dishes on their menu. The service provided by the friendly and accommodating staff is exceptional. They prioritize hygiene measures to ensure a safe and enjoyable meal for all patrons.
What a nice surprise! A delicious break from the standard German menus in this area. It was not as highly seasoned as our favorite Greek restaurants in Chicago. We enjoyed our dinner and the warm welcome. Portions are large and note that it is cash only. Glad we went!

Some of the most delicious, freshest Greek food I have ever had! Service was great and the staff was very friendly and welcoming. I would highly recommend this place, especially if you are looking for a change from German food.

A favourite in Bacharach. Delicious food with friendly service. I came without reservation, not recommended on a weekend by the way, and since it was just me, they managed to squeeze me in. This visit I went with the Aphrodite and enjoyed my meal very much. If you are visiting, highly recommend a lunch/dinner here. Do book to avoid disappointment.

A German twist on Greek cuisine, amazing! The gyro meat was not what we're used to and it was so delicious! They are open late and have excellent, attentive service. We had the Aphrodite and Demeter plates.

Stübers Restaurant is a picturesque dining spot with a terrace offering views of the Rhine River. As a member of the Tafelrunde, it prides itself on being one of the best land restaurants in the area. With seating for 80 indoors and 50 outdoors, it's an ideal place to savor delicious meals. While some visitors found the appetizers underwhelming and limited drink options, others were impressed by the main dishes and attentive service.
At the end of Bacharach town walk, we had a late brunch and early dinner here. We loved the food from the second the plates were brought to the table. The Portuguese fish stew was seasoned by cumin and sesame seeds. The pepper steak was done very well and tasted amazing. The wild boar was no disappointment either. We loved it so much and we immediately booked a reservation for the last night of our Bacharach stay. In addition to food, the restaurant was located on the top of wall facing the river.

I’m a big fan of local, healthy, vegetarian food - delicious is of course also a must! Here I was able to get all four in one. They had a meal of local chanterelle mushrooms with other grilled veggies on a bed of lettuce and homemade pasta made of whole wheat and stinging nettle! It was prepared to perfection by the chef, and the service was top notch. Totally recommend!

We visited here on the last night of a tour of Germany and we could not have chosen a better end to our journey. The food was fantastic, delicious and nourishing, the view was perfect and the service was friendly.

Went there for a celebratory dinner... and it was 100% worth it. The Service was attentive and quick, the food was absolutely spot-on. We all tried a variety of dishes and they all delivered. The prices are justified. Do not skip dessert!
Lilo R — Google review
We stayed in the area for a couple days which included the hotel above this restaurant. For the first night we decided to eat here and we were not disappointed. Everything was bang on for service and food quality and taste. The only piece that was different was sitting outside beside a busy rail line. Still… being electric is was relatively quiet and just behind it was the Rhine River to admire. I had the meal menu as shown in the photos. The appetizer was an amazing selection of flavours and tastes I couldn’t get enough of. Just delicious. The salad was fresh and mixed with textures and flavours of different vegetables and a savoury salad dressing with just the right mix of acidity and sweetness. The pork shoulder was melt in your mouth smooth and delicious with the perfect gravy to smooth out the palate. The deserts were surprisingly fun and different. Each their own flavour and nothing was wasted. I would definitely recommend eating here and if you love trains you will love it even more. Bon appetite!
Kevin E — Google review
Excellent food in a beautiful location. The trains going by only added to the ambience. The kitchen did a great job accommodating allergies. A good choice for someone who is gluten or dairy free to enjoy a gourmet meal.
Koreleva — Google review
Main dishes were amazing. Good portion, delicious taste. However appetizers were below average & extremely tiny. There is nothing to drink here except for the dry wine (no cocktails, no semi sweet wine, nothing), it’s actually the big problem an prevented us from spending the evening here. The place was almost empty, but we were not allowed to sit on the best places as “it is booked” Also there are a lot of trains passing 20 meters in front of you in a cloud of dust and noise

Nestled in the heart of Bacharach's historic market square, Hotel Restaurant Altkölnischer Hof is a charming family-run establishment that beautifully captures the essence of traditional German hospitality. Housed in a picturesque half-timbered building, this hotel boasts rooms adorned with rustic wooden furniture and country-style decor, creating an inviting atmosphere for guests.
My wife and I spent 3 glorious days at this hotel. We stayed in the apartments down the street from the main location. The rooms are immaculate, modern and the deck we had gave us amazing views of the castle and the town. We would return any time and this was one of our favorite stops in our European trip. The restaurant is the best in Bacharach.

Our family stayed in the holiday apartments and had a wonderful experience. The staff was friendly, the apartment was clean and centrally located, and parking was easy. There’s a very nice courtyard available as well. After leaving and flying back home to the USA, we realized we left several souvenirs in the apartment. Dennis at the front desk provided excellent customer service and was able to mail the items to us! I highly recommend this hotel and will stay there again if I return to Bacharach in the future.

Best in show — by a large margin — on our long and winding trip through Germany. We stayed in the apartments which are spacious, clean, beautiful views, and nicer in person than in the photos. Staff was really helpful and everything we needed (extra towels, etc) was easy to access on site. Meanwhile, location is perfect for exploring the area… Can’t recommend enough!

We had a double room on the third floor with balcony. The room is very spacious and quiet. Location is in the very center of Bacharach as well as the hotel owned parking space. Very positive to mention is the charging station for electro vehicles with reasonable prices and easy to use. The staff is super friendly and supportive. Breakfast gives all what the traveller needs for a busy sightseeing day at the Rhine.

A friend told us to stay here, we did, and we will continue the tradition of telling our friends to stay here in the future. Thank you for great experience

We stayed in the “Noir” apartment for five days in Bacharach. One should note that if you get one of the apartments they are in a separate building, which is approximately 100 meters away from the main hotel. The building is located next to the hotel’s parking lot, but it really was not much of a problem for us during our stay. The apartment was extremely large and well maintained but be aware that there is NO maid service, everything is self-service. Once you enter the building there is an area fully stocked with towels, trash bags, cleaning cloths, soaps, etc. to meet any of your needs and is very well maintained. The staff was extremely helpful and friendly and quickly addressed any concerns we might have had. We only ate breakfast on two occasions due to early morning tours but is highly recommended. There is a wide selection of breakfast food items to meet anyone’s taste but cannot comment on the dinner menu since we never had a chance to eat in the restaurant. A few extra comments about the apartments: there is no elevator (lift) available so if you are on the top floor you will need to carry your bags up a few flights of stairs. In addition, on our first night there, I needed to wear earplugs due to the people above our room – sounded like a herd of buffalo above us but thankfully they left the following day, and we had peace and quiet for the rest of our stay. Overall, we enjoyed our stay and would not hesitate to stay at this hotel in the future.
