Located on Stuart Street near the castle, Bute Museum is a treasure trove of historical, archaeological, and natural history artifacts from Bute. One of its notable exhibits is the 4,000-year-old cist burial known as the 'Queen of the Inch', discovered on Inchmarnock islet.
Super cute wee museum. They managed to get so much history into one room! Awesome job! Lovely front of house staff & gave us information on certain areas of interest around Bute itself. Very friendly! The other room has a tonne of stuffed animals, so it may not be suitable for all guests. Would love to visit Bute again. Recommend this museum!

An excellent museum, with a range of fascinating displays, from the shipping and everyday life of the island to wildlife and geological displays. Very welcoming and great customer service. A must visit.
Stephen L — Google review
Visited here with my wife, our daughter, grandchildren and mother in law (wheelchair bound). The person in the museum couldn't have been more helpful: ramp down for wheelchair; quiz for grandkids and wee clues. An overall nice experience.
Ciderman — Google review
Really nice little museum. It covers everything from geology, natural history, archaeology, and from early settlers right through to more recent local, social history. The staff were really helpful and engaging.
Adam R — Google review
We loved this little museum, not too far away from Rothesay Castle/Ferry Terminal. We were able to park nearby, entry wasn't expensive at all, we spent just over an hour here, learning all about the geology and history of the island, as learning all about its flora and fauna. A great introduction to the Isle of Bute before we spent the day travelling around the island.
Tara S — Google review
Small but lovely gardens and greenhouses, full of summer flowers. A massive aviary too, with finches canaries and much more. Sadly no cafe anymore, didn't reopen after covid. Gardens are well worth a visit when in the area.
Julie L — Google review
Absolutely loved this little museum, great place to learn the history of bute, The staff are amazing, knowledgeable and friendly. Highly recommend!

Super local history, geology and natural science museum. I love the older style exhibits! Plenty for young and old to learn about the whole isle of Bute for a small fee. Utterly fascinating!

Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Rothesay Castle, located in Rothesay, Scotland, is a circular castle ruin with a moat and displays of Stewart kings in the restored great hall gatehouse. The castle has a rich history dating back to the 13th century when it was under siege from Norsemen. It served as the island home of Scottish Kings and fell into English hands during the wars of independence before being retaken by Robert the Bruce in 1311.
This well maintained historic site in the center of town is a wonderful glimpse of the islands very interesting past! The castle has been well preserved and its history is well posted as you wander the ruins and grounds. The great hall shows an informative short movies and there are many activities for children and families that help interpret the history in an interactive way the kids will enjoy. All the staff persons working on site were super friendly and helpful and David the staff person in the ticket booth was especially helpful upon our arrival pointing out many things for us to watch for during our visit that we might have missed otherwise. A definite stop to visit when on the islands!

I love visiting castles and touch that part of history so here i am visiting another castle. Its a 13th century castle ruins but still showing its glory of its time. Being the member of English Heritage, its half pay ticket. Rothesay castle is located at Isle of Bute. Love this stone built castle with a lot of details. It has a hidden prison under neath the castle for prisoners. Main hall in castle is very nice. In a corner of that hall, make sure you catch the video presentation narrated by Magnus Magnusson ,and presented by Dougie Vipond, all about the castle and Bute's past and the constant battle for land and castle over the centuries. If you visiting Rothesay then try to catch up this castle.
Win T — Google review
A stunning castle in the middle of the town. Great history and local interest. A wonderful place to visit. A climb down in to the dungeon was great and up to the battlements for the views. Very friendly customer service and felt very welcomed. A must visit.
Stephen L — Google review
Incredible place, history, and staff! Despite part of the castle being under renovation from the big storm the other week, there was still plenty to see and explore. I'm glad they were able to start repairs so quickly! The exhibits around the grounds are great, though you do need to be able to climb narrow stairs to access everything. Several fun wall postings for kids, as well as a coloring station. Loved the view from the walls!
Ari B — Google review
A lovely castle with interesting history. The staff were very helpful, engaging and informative. The castle is well kept but some structural work is being done so a couple of sections are currently off limits. Well worth a visit to this excellent example of 13th century Scottish castle building.
Adam G — Google review
Lovely hour spent walking around. Impressive ruins with important and interesting history learned. Guy at the reception was friendly and warned me about the current seagull issue.
David B — Google review
Lovely castle shame that it's a ruin . The most interesting part is the ruined church . You need to go down a ladder to aces the dungeon. But seagulls overrun the place it's smells of seagull poo . And they fly at you. . Overall the highlight of the town .

Did not tour as the Bute Highland Games were in (and took precedence)…but looks worth a visit next time! Easy to find, didn’t look terribly crowded.

The Rothesay Victorian Toilet Museum offers a unique experience, showcasing well-preserved Victorian toilets that provide a glimpse into the grandeur of the era. Visitors can marvel at the opulent design and historical significance of these facilities. The museum also features hot showers for two and requires visitors to obtain a key from the harbor master. While the women's toilets are less remarkable, the men's facilities are particularly noteworthy, attracting photography enthusiasts.
I really, really... really enjoyed this spotless example of restored 19th century toilet facilities. The speckled porcelain sent pleasurable shivers down my spine! Flew to Glasgow all the way from Boston and got the ferry here. Another one ticked off!
Chris J — Google review
Worth a look in Bute! Not a museum but a functioning toilet so give a knock before entering the men’s side - a grade A listed facility no less with lovely tiling, you can imagine Bute in its Victorian heyday of the Clyde steamers, so it’s lovely to see this relic remaining.
Juliette S — Google review
Worth a trip. Gents loos are pretty amazing. Apparently ladies loos not so great.
Nick T — Google review
Very quaint and intriguing place situated on the harbour front at Rothesay. The toilets themselves have been restored to their original condition and when you go in you do get the victorian feel to them. The men toilets are the ones that have renowned look about them. It is very small and will only take a couple of minutes to take a wander around but it is interesting all the same. Overall an interesting and intriguing place to visit which makes for a unique day out. Well worth a visit whilst in Rothesay.
Daniel W — Google review
I would not call this a museum, more a heritage icon that has been preserved in very good original condition. As such, there is not an entrance fee as they are classed as public toilets. It is only the Gents toilet that is Victorian, the ladies being a more modern building which is attached, but I believe it is OK for ladies to go into the Gents to have a look.
John V — Google review
So interesting that this is there and is preserved. Must've been quite an innovation back in the day.
Mohan N — Google review
Even if you don't need the loo, pop into Rothesay Victorian Toilets as they are beautifully decorated, especially the male loos. Lots of Victorian history snippets of information hung on the wall too. Clean, nice smelling loos, free access.
Tara S — Google review
Brilliant victorian toilet display. Lovingly restored and kept clean and tidy, the porcelain was a joy to use. Really felt like I was doing my business 120 years ago, and in those days a visit to the water closet was about ceremony and style. Just needed an attendant on hand to wash and dry my hands afterwards. Better days, a better time, in a better Britain that I know we all dearly love and miss.

The Isle of Bute Distillery is a must-visit destination on the island, offering a unique experience for both locals and visitors. Situated in a historic building, it houses the award-winning distillery, Bute Brew Co tap room, pop-up cafe, and flexible event space. The outside courtyard hosts monthly markets and diverse events while the Isle of Bute Smokehouse has a permanent base at Bute Yard.
This was, undoubtedly, my favourite place in Bute. We had some beer, cocktails and gin tasting. They were all great. The atmosphere was amazing. The decor simple but pleasant and although we didn't have food, the aromas were amazing. Not to miss if visiting the Isle of Bute.

Fantastic beer and gin and rum. Menus are pretty heavy so watch out ⚠️ not to knock them over. Been here 3 times etc it’s always amazing & had really good Sri Lankan 🇱🇰 cuisine.
Cameron M — Google review
Really friendly staff and a great venue. They distil their own beers and gins here. I wasn’t sure which gin to try and the lady went through each one in great detail for us. It was fairly quiet but it has a band area so I’m sure it would get lively. Inside is steel, wood and concrete - converted warehouse, very clean and inviting
Helen S — Google review
Great place! Lots of tables. Some outside. They also have board games. G&T just £3,7!
Sasha L — Google review
Wonderful customer service. I purchased a bottle of gin online and mistakenly thought there was also a gift box. When I enquired about this Iona was quick to respond and promptly sent one to me free of charge with 2 lovely branded glasses. The recipient of the gift was delightful, as was I
Jennifer M — Google review
We could not have been made more welcome. The young girl behind the bar could not have helped us more. Such a true delight. Add into that great beer, perfect gin and excellent food then you don't want to leave. We will be back.
Simon ( — Google review
Randomly found out this hidden gem with a surprise. Very unique and tasty gins experience. Lovely place tugged away from the main road and friendly staff. The Lychee beauteician and Gorse with pineapple are my favourite! Ended up bringing home a wee bottle of Gorse and Oyster for my indulgence.
Djeus W — Google review
Beautiful outdoor (heated) gin garden. Taste a selection of their craft gins made with local ingredients. They also have a selection of beer and sodas with light snacks. An oasis in Rothesay popular with tourists and locals. I recommend booking on weekends. They also have a tea from Helmi's bakery, which is massive (could serve three or four). My favourites were the island gin and oyster gin.

Guests can enjoy straightforward accommodations complemented by complimentary breakfast, all while soaking in stunning views of the bay. This hotel is perfectly situated for exploring the picturesque Isle of Bute, just a short ferry ride from Wemyss Bay.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Outstanding Experience at The Victoria Hotel, Rothesay My wife and I had an absolutely amazing meal at The Victoria Hotel in Rothesay — it truly exceeded all expectations! The food was delicious, full of flavour, and the portions were very generous. From the moment we called to book (at very short notice!), the service was exceptional. Ashley, our host, went above and beyond to accommodate us and make sure everything was perfect from start to finish. We couldn’t have asked for a better dining experience. Highly recommended — we’ll definitely be back!
Brian T — Google review
A great little spot for a weekend away - the location was ideal just next to the ferry on the promenade. The room was fine, with a super view of the sea - they did not clean the rooms due to an ongoing COVID measure which seemed odd, but for a weekend this was fine. The staff at breakfast were really lovely particularly, and the bar staff helped take up our luggage (note there are three flights of stairs so not a hotel for those with mobility issues). Overall would recommend for location, breakfast and view!
Juliette S — Google review
Very small, dusty room, tiny window with view of the fire escape and a brick wall. The room was not serviced at all during my two day stay. The Bistro restaurant was not open on my first evening. Carpets throughout the hotel were very worn. One of the staff was pleasant and helpful, the other very distant. There was a very high noise level, rowdy singing on my first night till late.
Chris S — Google review
This is a great wee hotel in Rothesay. Situated right on the front minutes from the ferry port. Clean, cosy and comfy rooms, brilliant hospitality tray and decent toiletries. Good freshly cooked breakfast (only one mushroom was odd but gave us a giggle) and lovely bright breakfast room. Friendly helpful staff. Rooms a little bit small and could do with a freshen up but that doesn't detract from a really good stay. Happy to stay here again.

We arrived later in the evening and staff here were amazing. The food was excellent and service was so friendly and accommodating. Thank you for a great first impression of the island!

Hi We had a lovely meal and staff were very helpful, the only thing that was not right was the chips that came with the meal,on the menu it clearly says hand cut chips served but they were frozen chips and still a bit hard in the middle. Overall OK

Known for its flavorful dishes, this restaurant provides options for takeaway and food delivery, making it convenient for those looking to enjoy a meal in the comfort of their own space. While dining in may not always be an option due to early closing hours, patrons rave about the quality of their meals.
First time visit on this 3 day Bute trip. This is an intimate restaurant directly opposite the seafront gardens. We recd a lovely welcome from owner Mica.We had Cauliflower pakora starter followed by Lamb bhuna and chicken Masaledar. The meat and sauces were beautifully cooked, flavourful and tasty. The Paratha bread was also great with the piquant thick sauces. Prices were affordable. Thoroughly recommended, the restaurant is worth a visit for all indian food fans. You will not be disappointed.😏

Arrived late one evening so bit quiet although could see it had been popular earlier. Warm welcome. Generous portions. Good value.

Should change the chef.. no salt no spice. When we have informed the same to the waiter, the chef stormed on us yelling at how can we complain about his food, a chef of 21 years. Worst dining experience ever and I’d not recommend this behaviour at anyone
Kishan C — Google review
Ryan, our waiter, was incredibly helpful, polite and a brilliant laugh. Service was top notch. The food was absolutely delicious and arrived quickly. To top off our lovely meal, Ryan presented our friend with a cake for her birthday! We had mentioned when we ordered our meal that it was her birthday. Ryan told the owner who arranged for a cake to be sent out to the table after our meal. Fantastic meal and unbeatable service. Thank you for making our evening one to remember.
Kerry C — Google review
Great food but watch out for early closing. Two of us walked in at 2215 for a main course only sit down meal (having literally just passed the previous customers as they walked away after their meal) to be told it was takeaway only - the hours on Google are advertised as a 2300 finish. We were looking forward to a curry so decided to go ahead & order with the intention of finding a dry spot in town to eat the meal. We ordered the chicken tikka chamakchola which came with pilau rice & to be fair, it was very good - just a shame we couldn't dine in especially seeing as we'd eaten our food & got back to our hotel by 2300.
Howard J — Google review
Great restaurant, owner knows his stuff. Food is authentic and delicious. Good vibe - when I’m back in the BUTE best believe I’ll be coming back here first thing.
Oliver W — Google review
Decent food. Decent prices. Slow inattentive yet friendly service. No alcohol license, but BYOB with corkage allowed. Starters of mince samosas and a prawn poori were average. mince lacked flavour and could have been warmer, but it was edible. Bread for poori was light, sweet sauce on the poori was the same sweet sauce on the chick peas that accompanied the samosas. Nice enough. Mains were much better and would entice us back. Lamb in my lamb achari was tender and tasty. The sauce had the perfect amount of lime pickle and garlic. The chicken chasni had heaps of tasty tender chicken in a sweet red sauce. Rice and naan were perfect. Server and cook/owner were very friendly, but not what I'm looking for in a restaurant. I want good speedy service. Took 20 minutes to get the bill then another 15 to take the money to pay it. I've learned that's life on Bute. Other restaurants are similar!

On a dreary day in Rothesay, The Kettledrum is the perfect refuge. This charming café offers an array of delightful options, from hearty soups to gluten-free cakes and exceptional coffee. Their dirty fries topped with chicken are a must-try! For those seeking vegan choices, the staff is incredibly accommodating and knowledgeable about their menu. Diners rave about the Mediterranean tartlet and delicious vegan panini, along with a scrumptious sticky toffee pudding for dessert.
What a fantastic cafe to sit and watch the world go by. I liked the prints on the wall. We were lucky to get a seat as most tables were reserved. So book ahead to guarantee a table. All our food tasted great, no complaints, the sticky toffee pudding was really nice. The prices were on par with similar establishments in the area. There is a toilet for customers.

Calm and cosy atmosphere, friendly and patient staff (we didn’t know what to order); the steak melt was really good - tender meat with no fat or gristle and my husband loved his fish and chips. Nice convenient location opposite parking and the ferry.

I popped in here to ask about vegan options after pretty much everywhere else we had tried (Musiker was closed) had nothing for us, and I'm super glad that I did! The staff could not have been more helpful, knowledgable about their products, or more accommodating. The Mediterranean tartlet was incredible, the vegan panini was delish and the soup was scummy! They even found us a vegan dessert of sticky toffee pudding 😋 I'm so grateful to Espenlade for suggesting we tried there! Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a vegan option with lovely attentive staff (they even thought to cut our tartlet up for us as we were taking away, couldn't have been any kinder). Thanks so much

Was so happy to come across this veggie cafe by pure chance after visiting the castle. The menu sounded delicious even to my meat eating family so we went in & realised everything was veggie, such a great variety of choice to suit anyone’s taste. I had the bacon & Stilton panini and it was so lovely. They are also extremely dog friendly & even gave our dogs peanut butter licki mats! Never been anywhere so accommodating to dogs or so impressive with their veggie selection!

What a wonderful experience and food. We came here at the end of a couple of days on Bute, we’d visit Musicker again if we were here longer. Such a warm friendly welcome and service. The coffee and homemade vegan cakes were fantastic, and with a selection of four it was hard to choose, but we had apple & cinnamon and chocolate & black cherry. Delicious! The vegan savoury food options looked really good too. The cafe has a lovely relaxed feel to it with good music and seating arrangements that feel private and cosy. (Oh, and the toilet is very clean - an important plus :)
