Tramways
Saltburn Cliff Tramway, established in 1884, is a renowned landmark featuring stained glass windows and offering scenic rides with stunning views of the sea. It holds the distinction of being Britain's oldest water-balanced funicular railway still in operation and the sole remaining pleasure pier on the North East and Yorkshire coast. Visitors can't afford to miss this iconic attraction while in town.
Saltburn Cliff Tramway – really nice to watch from outside and try it by myself. Visited on Saturday and it was rainy day, so needed to wait around 5-10 minutes in the queue to try this experience with one of the oldest water-powered funiculars still operating. The ride took around 1 minute and we were 12 persons and 1 dog inside of funicular. The staff were friendly and created a great experience. Worth to try!

What a wonderful experience! I’ve wanted to visit for many years, having been told stories about my family visiting 50+ years ago. It was a real bucket list item for me, and I’m so glad I’ve ridden on the tramway! Brilliant, friendly staff - very reasonable price for such a unique experience too - I’d highly recommend visiting and taking a ride in this piece of living history. My only ‘negative’ if you could call it that, was the lovely merchandise in the bottom entrance; after payment, there was a tram car waiting, so didn’t have time to purchase or properly look at the souvenirs, but I’ll make sure to ask for extra time for a browse next time (they had some gorgeous art prints). A brilliant experience through and through, I can’t wait to visit again. I felt like a big kid!

We stopped in just to ride the tram as it looked like something that we would enjoy. Parking was easy as there is a lot that runs along the coast in the town. The tram is near the southern section of the lot. Parking is free. Access is easy with a walkway from the parking lot to the entrance. Cost was £2 each way per person, and one can pay with a card. There is a long walkable pier at the bottom with benches to sit and just enjoy the magnificent views. The water was filled with surfers donned in wet suits when we visited on the 3rd Friday in September. The staff was super friendly, and we learned that they are volunteers. The engineer was eager to explain just how the tram functioned in order to go up and down the tracks. There is an arcade at the bottom but we enjoyed just walking out on the pier and admiring the stunning views of the coast. Be sure to check the hours of operation as they close rather early and you would need to visit during the day.

Saltburn cliff tramway is wonderful. Opened June 1884. 120 feet tall, 207feet of track. Carry’s 12 per car. What a gem of a place any town can have. Staff super friendly

Saltburn Cliff Tramway We like it and its always a fun way to travel especially with all your beach gear and children, however it is only a very short journey, 120ft in 55 seconds. So £6 for a family ticket down then £6 for a family ticket up, that's £12, way more than it costs to park the car for the day. For that reason I'd recommend £1 for adults/children, family tickets for £4, with pets free, but that's just me. However, it is a nice experience and a lovely memory, with vast views and it also does look pretty great watching the trams going up and down. The gents are always happy and polite and eager to chat about the history of the tram or just chat in general, so you don't mind paying a little extra. For future visits, I would have a happy hour, 50p travel between the hours of 1-2pm, off peak charges and also introduce ticket stubs for the children to hold and keep as momentos. Also my missus wouldn't let me ask if we identified as dogs would we only have to pay 80p 😂

A must for any visit to Saltburn! You can walk up and down the steps to get from the beach/pier to town but the funicular is much more fun! Saltburn town has some lovely indie shops and cafes in some stunning Victorian shop buildings.
Leigh B — Google review
Interesting technology, amazing it's still going! Worth a trip at least upwards, great views of the sea, and atmospheric old carriages. Fair value at £2 each way, and friendly staff. However the queue at the bottom can be long in the sun, they really should provide a bit of cover and a seat or two for older people.

The Saltburn Cliff Tramway is a water-balanced funicular railway in the seaside town of Saltburn‑by‑the‑Sea, in North Yorkshire / Tees Valley. It was opened in 1884 (28 June 1884) to replace a vertical hoist, and is the oldest water-balanced funicular still operating in the UK. Had a great experience ❤️

Saltburn Pier is a historic iron pier located in Saltburn, facing the North Sea. Recently restored to its former glory, it offers stunning views and a great walking experience along its 200-meter stretch. As the northernmost pier of its kind in Great Britain, it holds historical significance as the first iron pier on the North East Coast. Visitors can also enjoy Seldon's Leisureworld inside the pier building, featuring classic amusement games and modern arcade entertainment.
The last remaining pier in North Yorkshire apparently. Great beaches and cliffs either side and lots of bird life and dog friendly. Saltburn also has one of the last remaining water powered funicular tramways in the UK to transport people from town to the seafront without tackling all the steps. Well worth a visit.

It is a place that offers a beautiful and scenic experience from the beach. With stunning views of the coastline, various entertainment and restaurants, it is the perfect place for a relaxing walk or a fun day with family and friends. The range of activities at the pier and Cliff Tamway also make it a great place to visit. Overall, a beautiful mix of seaside charm and entertainment.
Princy — Google review
The allure of a truly beautiful beach is undeniable, a sanctuary where the world's chaos fades into the gentle rhythm of the waves. Imagine soft, powdery sands, warm beneath your feet, stretching out to meet the shimmering, turquoise embrace of the sea. I love it 🧡🧡🧡🧡
Sda R — Google review
Ideal for young families. Good stretch of beach, dog friendly. Wee cafe and restaurants. Usual fish and chips and arcade. Pier loverly and fenicular railway wonderful if working. Only downside getting up and down steps to beach.
Iain C — Google review
A beautiful scenery of the coastline. Here is a solo trip itinerary: Put saltburn pier in your sat nav to get to the car park (pay and display) download ring go as the machines are fussy Walk round the beach. Get wet if you want to. Take it all in 🧘‍♀️ There is the arcade thing which was very exciting for a first timer like me :) barely won anything but still lots of fun playing. There is a cash machine inside so don’t worry if you don’t have cash on you. The food—-I had fish and chips duuuh 🤪 at the seaview restaurant. The views are absolutely worth it but there are other chippy places nearby so you can buy and sit on one of the many benches and enjoy it that way. Please have an ice cream as a dessert it’s just amazing plus you deserve it. Oh there is also Tomahawk steak house nearby with great views so if you fancied something else other than fish and chips Dog friendly Child friendly There is the famous old cliff tramway whi ch was pretty cool if you ask me. £2 for one way. Do it! You know you want to. Other things: -rent a wetsuit -surf school 🏄‍♂️ -Fishing -watch the sunset -people watching -take selfies -chat to random strangers Etc
Binta S — Google review
A gorgeous old pier, and magnificent views from the end. A nice walk down and ample seats to rest and take in the sea air.
Charlie P — Google review
The pier looks pretty cool and goes quite a way out into the sea. Although once you get to the end, it's just full of fishermen taking up all the room with their gear and rods. Surely give them a start time of 6pm to allow tourists and people fancying a quiet walk or some photo taking, clear room to do that. That always spoils it for me. Also the arcade that you walk through or around to get to the pier is another ticket induced nightmare. There's a machine that charges you £1 for Pokémon cards, then gives you one card, imagine a childs disappointment when that happens. There's also never any money tubs, here's some money bags to hold your change in, just isn't the same.
Damian G — Google review
It's a fairly ordinary pier, but we all love a pier, right?

Saltburn Miniature Railway is a charming 15" gauge railway that has been in operation since 1947. The line takes passengers from the seafront through the Valley Gardens to various attractions, including the Italian Gardens, Tea Lawn, and Woodland Centre. One of its notable locomotives is 'Prince Charles', which was introduced in 1953.
Fantastic little railway that’s a fun short journey through Valley Gardens. We visited with family to see Santa. What a wonderfully organised event, with friendly and enthusiastic volunteers. It began at the station where we were greeted my elf’s, then a train ride to the grotto in valley gardens, refreshments, saw Santa and then the train back.

It was a great experience; the kids will definitely love this activity. All the staff were wonderful, full of smiles, and very willing to assist the visitors.

This is a fantastic little train ride for train lovers and kids alike. It doesn't last long, but it's a beautiful, scenic journey through the park, and it's an absolute bargain at £3 return for adults. I enjoyed taking the train to the end and walking back through the woods. This railway is run by volunteers who are lovely and friendly, and you can really feel their love for this delightful little railway. This is definitely a must visit for any family during their trip to Saltburn.

What a fab little train ride as a family of 4 and a dog! We loved it. The staff were so helpful and friendly and we would like to say a huge thank you to Brian who took lots of lovely photos of us x

Lovely little train, staff were really friendly and the scenery was lovely. Even though there was an issue with one of the trains the volunteers kept us informed and we was up and running in no time.
John E — Google review
Great fun little activity to do with children. Staff were great and it’s really well run. It’s only a short train ride (about 20 mins out and back) but very reasonably priced. Would definitely recommend doing if you are in the area.

Saltburn Beach is a must-visit attraction in Saltburn-by-the-Sea, known for its stunning pier, golden sands, and clear waters. It's a popular surf spot along the North Yorkshire coast, offering an exciting experience for tourists. For those seeking a more tranquil visit, the soft sands provide a relaxing setting to unwind. Visitors can also explore the local shops and establishments situated on the seafront and cliff top promenade for a well-rounded day by the coast.
A Truly Magical Spot Saltburn Beach is a truly magical place in every sense of the word. When I visited, there wasn’t much obvious tourist activity, but that only added to its charm. The atmosphere was peaceful and inviting, with beautifully maintained walkways, blooming flowers, and a clean, elegant promenade. The sand is soft and pleasant to walk on, perfect for a relaxing day by the sea. There’s free parking available on the main street, which is convenient, though reaching the beach requires descending a long set of stairs. That said, the walk down is very much part of the experience—it offers lovely views and makes the visit feel even more rewarding.

A lovely Victorian seaside town left a little behind in the modern world (not in a good way). An excellent pier but the front is dominated by tatty outlets and a tiny amusement arcade. The saving grace is the beautiful counterbalanced lifting mechanism down to the beach, to avoid the short but steep walk.
Will H — Google review
A sea resort as they ones were. Saltburn beach is inviting and has a lot to offer for all ages. The Victorian ‘trams’ that take you up and or down to the beach, are a nice feature. Whilst we were the place was busy, but not to busy. A nice place to spend a day or two. Great places where they serve good coffees and good ice creams.
Hans R — Google review
Beautiful small quaint seaside town. Visited in September and it was fairly quiet. Theres a slot machine arcade on the pier and cliff side tramway. If like landscape scenery and architecture it is a lovely place to sit and draw, paint or take photos. Plenty of places to eat and drink.
Lesley M — Google review
Had a walk to the end of the pier before catching the marvellous funicular up into town. The pier building and the pier itself are fab. Such a treat that they’re still there and in good condition.
Leigh B — Google review
Beautiful beach, had a little pool under the pier and helped when building our sand castles and playing on the beach. You will need cash as all the shops on the beach front only accept cash!
Alexander G — Google review
Really lovely beach! Very untouched by tourism and very traditional! Take cash as most of the shops on the beachfront don’t take cards! Plenty of parking but recommend get there early to get parked!
Lucy P — Google review
First time here, and the weather was perfect for us to enjoy this beautiful seaside place. Free parking on street, at the top of the famous funicular. Delightful beach, which is framed by an elegant pier. The Ship Inn was also a lovely pub.

Seafood restaurant
The Seaview Restaurant is a charming seaside eatery that offers a relaxed atmosphere and stunning views of the beach and Huntcliff. With its location right on the seafront, patrons can enjoy delicious breakfast staples, fresh seafood dishes, and delectable desserts while basking in the sunshine on the patio. The restaurant prides itself on serving the freshest seafood sourced from surrounding waters daily.
Visited Seaview multiple times and each time, every time, it is superb. Be prepared to queue as we did on our last visit but the wait is never long and well worth it. The views out over the beach and sea are awesome-inspiring and the restaurant is always clean, friendly and welcoming. There’s bags of options for the kids and I usually enjoy their Saltburn Crab Brioche - which is a combination of white & brown crab, crayfish tails, celeriac remoulade, pickled cucumber & radish, skinny fries and lemon mayonnaise - gorgeous. Will return ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Quit simply the classiest restaurant I've ever been to. It was a lovely day and you could sit in sun or shade. There was a quiet and relaxed atmosphere and the dogs were comfy too. Everything was perfect and the waiting-on staff were all so brilliant and impeccably turned out. Though slightly pricey it was worth every penny. I'm sure it was just as good inside, but it's outdoors for us as much as possible. This is a must visit, not to be missed.

This is a review for the Seaview Chippy, as we bought takeout. We managed to get takeout later in the day when the queues subsided. Always busy so always a good sign for good fish and chips. The fish was tasty. The chips were tasty. The Curry sauce was tasty. Good quality fish and chips. However, the portion size to cost ratio is where it loses stars for me. Cost is on the high end at £12 (in regional experience (bigger and cheaper in Whitby) and the portion size is probably as small as I’ve seen for takeaway fish and chips with the fish no longer than a fork. Great fish and chips but needs to be a £1-2 cheaper, or bigger portion.
Craig C — Google review
First time visiting here - will definitely be returning. Outstanding fish & chips to take out! My partner and I had 2 x regular fish & chips, a drink each, 1 x curry sauce, 1 x mushy peas and 1 x gravy, this totalled £32 which in today’s climate served on a sea front is very reasonable I think (we’ve certainly paid more and it’s been know-where near as nice). As you can see they’re not shy on portion sizes. The fish was definitely fresh (tasted amazing), chips fresh, peas and curry sauce were tasty and hot, and being a Yorkshire man I had to have gravy on my chips! The gravy was thick, meaty and very tasty. Absolutely delicious food. A new favourite of ours, highly recommend this chippy. 10/10 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

So on the way back from Scotland, me and the wife really wanted to visit this place as we'd heard a lot about it, when we arrived at 11:40am, there was no one in the queue so we waited downstairs, we waited and waited, 10 minutes had passed and I was just about to walk away until the host came to take us upstairs, at this point I thought it would have been packed as they didn't seem to be in a rush, we were the 3rd couple in there! Anyways we sat down, ordered and at this point we looked out and the queue downstairs was long! But again, no one seemed to be in a rush. They had 1 host/manager, 1 server and 2 waitresses clearing, all just standing around. So our food came out and ive got to say the "nibbles" that we hand were crap! The potato rosti was the length of my little finger, under seasoned and luke warm at a bargain price of £5 for 2 was a rip off. The whitebait my wife ordered were under seasoned and burnt! Both me and my wife were starting believe this place is more style over substance! Then the main courses came out, ive got to say they were nice, nothing memorable but just nice. We ate and then they realised we need to turn the tables here so we got given the bill and paid and left. I dont like leaving negative reviews but I wouldn't recommend anyone coming out of there way to visit this place! It was a long drive back to London and wasn't worth the hype 😪

We had such a lovely lunch at Seaview Restaurant with great views over the beach. The crab brioche was delicious and beautifully presented. Also had the oysters which were really nice. It’s a little bit expensive but certainly not over priced as everything tasted great and the seafood is such high quality. It’s also family friendly with good children’s menu. There was a queue quite early as lunch is walk-in only and for evening meals you definitely need to book in advance but you can see why it is so popular!
Freddie R — Google review
We visited for a quick bite to eat around 2pm, it was rather busy but the wait was only around 5-10 minutes to have food cooked to order. The chips are cooked in beef dripping, however they offered to cook us fries in vegetable oil as an alternative. Lovely venue inside, great appearance and clean. Friendly staff and great queuing system. I plan to come back to visit the ‘sit in’ restaurant upstairs.

Cafe
Located in Saltburn-By-The-Sea, Signals Cafe + Bar offers a casual dining experience with the option to take away food in a convenient box for beachside enjoyment. The panko chicken sweet chili bao buns are particularly popular on sunny days. Additionally, Real Meals provides a Mediterranean-inspired deli experience with artisan groceries available for purchase alongside dine-in tables. The menu features a wide range of drinks, sandwiches, smoothie bowls, fries, and cakes, including lush hot chocolates.
First time in Saltburn and wanted somewhere we could take the dog. Had breakfast and sat outside, whilst the menu is not huge what we had was amazing. Banana bread with honey & greek yoghurt, and a full English. Service was great, super friendly. So nice we went back for lunch, meatball sub and a nourish bowl, again absolutely amazing. Atmosphere is lovely, we hope to be back soon, such a lovely town

Very expensive, when you charge this much you have to have perfection. This was anything but perfect. While it’s photogenic, edible it isn’t. The place was cold, everyone was sat in their coats. The breakfast was not hot, more lukewarm to some items being cold . Egg overcooked, sausage skin so hard it was like leather. The scrambled egg and smoked salmon, the salmon was inedible and I had to spit out the salmon. There was so much sinew in there it was impossible to chew. No one at anytime asked how the meal was. We waited and tied to catch a waiters attention but to no avail. We left very disappointed having spent £32 for two people for below average food.

First time in Saltburn and was looking for a dog friendly place for coffee and breakfast. Trusted in Google and was not disappointed. The latte was superb, perfect combination of bitter and sweet, great flavour and velvety smooth. The breakfasts were also delicious. A lovely full English, and Avo on toast. Not the cheapest breakfast, but you get what you pay for.

Overall we got great food, but felt put on the spot by one employee. Been Signals a fair few times in the past and always had fantastic food and fantastic service. Today, we had one of our childs bike so decided to sit outside. Saw the sign outside that there was an app, which I always like to use technology, and bonus a discount for using it. The sign said scan the QR code. This I found on the tables inside, so scanned it and there was an option to change table number. The tables outside didn't have the numbers on, but there was only one other table occupied so picked a number. Our drinks were brought out by one lady all fine, fantastic coffee. Our food than came out by a different lady, who straightaway confronted us by saying "can I ask, how did you order on the app outside". I explained I chose a different table. They continued saying that there isn't QR codes outside so they don't know whose ordering. We explained the options of outside tables are on the app, so if not allowed need removing or adding table numbers. Unfortunately it continued with comments making us feel we were in the wrong for using the app, or maybe for being outside in the rain by choice. This experience was the first time we'd experienced this at Signals but has put a dampener on feelings.

Brunch for two. Good choice on offer and Signals willing to adapt the menu so I could have scrambled egg in a roll. My partner had a bacon roll. We both had extra mushrooms. The portions were a good size. The cafe was busy but we were able to sit at the breakfast bar in the window.

Plenty of tables in and out. Food done fresh. Great quality ingredients. Sponge very soft. Spring onions in the bacon bagel elevated it. Only issue was toilet out of order and crisps to firm.

Lush, again and every time we visit. It's the most awesome cute and cosy cocktail bar, which, if you didn't know, is a cafe too. Serving chunks of gorgeous chocolate cake, cakes, and delicious savoury bites. It's really well sited and easy to get to. The funky decoration of the whole sitting rooms filters through to the atmosphere. Everyone is welcoming and helpful. The cocktails are all mixed by very good bar staff, we enjoyed a few 'Dark and Stormy' cocktails and 'French Martinis'. Its a hit with us everytime, perfect for just two of you on a date night, or a group.

We were recommended to go here and it did not disappoint. We first went for lunch and I had the most amazing salad. Today we went for breakfast where I had the burrito, wow wow wow! It was delicious. Tonight we went for dinner and drinks, they went above and beyond to make drinks which were not on the cocktail menu. I cannot recommend this place enough, the food was delicious especially, the staff were very attentive and the atmosphere was just right.

Delish food! We called for breakfast, the breakfast burrito was awesome. It’s a busy place so be prepared to wait a short while, but it’s totally worth the wait. Breakfast was so good we came back the day after for evening meal and drinks, which was equally delicious! (Beef curry) Definitely recommend this place 👌😋

I’m just sat enjoying THE MOST delicious Buddha Bowl with roast vegetables, tender stem broccoli and beetroot humous. It is outstanding! The staff are delightful and attentive and the chilled music playing in the background is just the right volume to create the perfect relaxing ambience. I came here yesterday too and hand a halloumi and quinoa salad which was just as gorgeous. HIGHLY recommend this stunning cafe!! I will definitely be back, it’s been the highlight of my 3 days visit.

Very good café. Friendly team of efficient staff who know what they're doing. Vegetarian options available. Additional seating outside to the front on the pavement. Very good plateful of breakfast. Scrambled eggs were as yum as my mom used to make. Good fuel start to the day. Would revisit. Recommended.

Called in for coffee and scones after driving to Saltburn. Delicious coffee and fruity freshly baked scones that stayed in one piece when buttered. Quick and friendly service. What more could you ask for? To a baby boomer from Yorkshire it seemed a bit expensive but so does everywhere these days. I guess I'm just getting old.

Nestled in the charming coastal town of Saltburn-by-the-Sea, No. Twenty Three is a vibrant eatery that has quickly become a local favorite. This delightful spot specializes in Neapolitan-style pizzas and boasts an impressive selection of craft beers and gins, making it perfect for both casual bites and lively evenings out. The atmosphere is relaxed yet buzzing, ideal for gathering with friends or enjoying a hearty meal.
Super busy place in the little town! It feels like all the people were in this place on a weekday evening. Service was friendly but everyone was so busy - so you’ll have to wait a bit longer for everything. They got our bill wrong too. Freshly made pizzas and tiramisu. The tiramisu was definitely one of the best I’ve ever had in this country!!!

There where 6 of us dining here for the 1st time, we were unable to book a table as it is walk in only. We had a 20 minute wait for a table but once seated food chosen all was good. Starters ( meatballs) arrived and it was really nice....the mains were a mix of different pizzas and all were cooked really nicely, portions are generous.

Excellent place with tasty Neapolitan style pizzas and fast service. We visited this place on Saturday afternoon and tried really good Pizza with burrata and mushrooms. Pizza was freshy made and with really good quality ingredients. I am extremely happy with service too. I wanted non-alcoholic cocktail, they didn't have it in the menu but made a very tasty one special for me. We didn't have much time so informed our waitress and she served us really fast. My highest recommendations for this pizzeria&bar.

We had two pizzas and two soft drinks. The pizzas were delicious! The service was brilliant with a super friendly and welcoming team. We felt right at home as soon as we walked in. They offer a selection of beers of draught and had a wine list, super cosy and dog friendly.

Lovely meal, little on the pricey side but very tasty, waiting staff were fab, and I liked that we could pick our own table. Garlic sauce didn't taste of anything but mayo, we got both the herby and roasted garlic and they were both bland, pizza was very nice though.

Great pizzas (around GBP 14 per one with good size) and they are delicious! The meatballs starter is also fantastic

We had 2 excellent experiences at No 23 while on holiday in Saltburn. The pizzas are freshly prepared and delicious and the sharing platters are huge - we needed a doggy bag to take home! The service was exceptional and very friendly and we were treated a free prosecco for our birthdays. Overall a wonderful experience and special thanks to our servers Faith and Millie. Can’t recommend highly enough. If you are in Saltburn you must go!

I came here about it two weeks ago and I ordered ‘The Don’. I thought the pizza was very sloppy but just thought it was too much sauce I came back again last night and the same thing happened again, but it was full of grease! I picked up the slice of pizza and all the toppings fell off. Really disappointed because these pizzas are quite expensive
