Castillo del Rey is a 13th-century castle located in San Vicente de la Barquera, Cantabria. It stands as a significant historical site alongside the Church of Santa Maria de los Angeles. The castle, with its crenelated tower and small museum, offers visitors an exhibition on the town's history and provides stunning views of the Ria de San Vicente.
A wonderful place to spend a couple of hours and take in the outstanding scenery. €2 well spent. 🙏🏽❤️

Beaches are great, town a little disappointing. Seafood restaurants near the Port end of town looked interesting. Free parking near the Port.

Great walk from the town center to the castle. Awesome views and the cathedral is up there too. You can see the whole robes and the town from there. Peaceful and beautiful. A must see if you are in San Vicente de la Barquera. There sometimes a few expositions of local artist in the near museum. Usually free entrance.

Worth 2€. A couple of interesting things inside, but to be honest the best is certainly the view. Not suitable for people struggling with stairs ;)

Beautiful castle with amazing views around the bay of San Vicente de la barquera. Inside you can see a hugh canon. When you go upstairs you can walk around and enjoy the views and take nice pictures. At the end there is a church you can visit too. Inside the central hall there is a 3D maquete of the castle and town.

Church
Built and expanded between the 13th and 16th centuries, this temple is a remarkable example of the gothic style in the region. Inside, it houses various treasures such as a sculpture of the crucified Christ, a baroque altarpiece, and most notably, the beautiful renaissance tomb of Inquisitor Antonio del Corro.
The Iglesia Santa María de Los Ángeles is a stunning church. The surrounding area is very nice to explore. Lots of interesting details to find. But besides the impressive church, it's the amazing view from here that's most rewarding. A really breathtaking sight over the valley and the Braza Mayor. It carried quite a good amount of water when we visited. So the view was out of this world. Here in northern Spain you almost feel that you got lost and ended up somewhere in Scotland with the green valleys and the water here. It's an impressive sight. We were almost the only ones around and had really time to enjoy it. Taking pics of course, but also just sitting and standing here and taking in these wonderful views. Really worth the quick but steep walk up here from town. Highly recommended and one of the highlights of our trip.

Beautiful viewpoint. A must see if you're in the area as it is near the castle on the hilltop and it's free! Best timing is around sunset. The church can also be visited during certain times (adults: 1,50€ children: free) but I haven't seen it myself in the many times I've been here. There are some areas you can sort of safely climb as well along the crumbling wall.

The Puente de La Maza, a stone bridge over 600 years old, is a remarkable historical landmark in San Vicente de la Barquera. It was once one of the longest bridges in Europe, stretching almost 500 meters with 28 surviving arches out of its original 32. This iconic structure offers breathtaking views of the colorful boats dotting the Ria de San Vicente.

(Translated by Google) The Barquera sanctuary is located very close to the fishing port on the road that leads to the Punta de Silla lighthouse and the estuary formed by the estuary at the mouth of the Cantabrian Sea. It is a hermitage built in the Middle Ages and whose first references date back to the 15th century. The entrance to the chapel is preceded by a small portico with four semicircular arches. Externally, it is a fairly large building with a robust and resistant appearance, built entirely of stone and with buttresses on its west wall that faces the road. The chapel, however, has rather small dimensions since on one of its sides there is a shelter attached to the sanctuary. It is accessed through a lintel door that is located behind a small garden. The interior has a single nave with masonry walls. As soon as you enter, there is an iron fence under a tented arch that closes the way to the chapel. In the apse you can see a marble altarpiece with the image of the Virgen de la Barquera, patron saint of the town of San Vicente de la Barquera. In our case, the church was open only up to the gate, so we were not able to see the image of the Virgin up close. According to a legend, one Easter Tuesday when the sailors of the town were celebrating the Easter festival, these sailors saw a small unknown ship coming in the distance that did not carry sails or oars and in which there was no crew but which was moving in the direction of land. On the ship there was only the image of the Virgin, which indicated the direction of the wind to the sailors who were there. From that moment on, the town decided to build a hermitage in honor of the Virgin so that it would serve as protection for the sailors who went out to work in the dangerous waters of the Cantabrian Sea. Even today, boats that go out fishing sound the boat's siren when passing in front of the hermitage asking for the protection and protection of the Virgin. A very charming hermitage surrounded by a beautiful and very well-kept garden space. It is worth walking from San Vicente for a pleasant walk to the lighthouse, with beautiful views of the sea and the surroundings.

Restaurante Las Redes is a stylish, maritime-themed establishment located on Avenida de los Soportales 24, near the old pier of San Vicente de la Barquera. This family-owned restaurant is known for its lobster rice dishes and its use of fresh, local, and seasonal produce from nearby fish markets. The menu features typical dishes from the region such as San Vicente oysters, fresh squid rings, and locally caught fish like machote.
More expensive then other options on the street, but very good food. More fine dining than other options. The fish was excellent and it made me appreciate just how good fish can be when cooked properly. Razer clams were also excellent.

Restaurant
Restaurante Puente La Maza offers an extensive menu, but the 14.50 euro daily menu is highly recommended as it usually includes cocido montanes, a traditional Cantabrian dish and one of the restaurant's specialties. Despite its affordability, it is known for serving quality food and efficient service. The restaurant can get busy on public holidays and weekends, so booking in advance is advisable. Visitors have praised the delicious 'cachopo' and highlighted the exceptional cocido montanes.

Better to book in advanced, specially public holidays and weekends. There is a crazy waiter who is super nice, the service is fast and efficient and ask for recommendations. We tried "cachopo" and it was yummy. The only contra a bit pricey.

We chose the restaurant for it's quite good reviews. We ordered Patatas tres salsas and Caxopo. The fries are not homemade (which they usually are in this region). They were soft and drenched in oil. The Caxopo was the worst we had since then (and we had many). Being from Vienna I know my ways around a good Cordon Bleu and this one was soaked in oil, not crunchy and did not cover the meat. I cannot recommend this restaurant, it works with the cheapest ingredients and the service was a bit cold. We did not try the fish. The ambiente is normal. Usually we had good experiences in other local restaurants of that kind. Maybe look for something more inlands as it is cheaper and the people are nicer tvere, often you can find family run businesses that are happy to host you.
Othellofriday S — Google review
We were greated rather unfriendly which we attributed to the lack of language skills. The shrimps were sandy and tasteless. The other dish was lukewarm at best. Once we wanted to pay we had ask for the check three times within 40 minutes, unsucessfully. So we went inside to pay and had to wait yet another 5 minutes for the guy to even talk to us. When we told him that either we could pay the check within 2 minutes or we would leave he finally acknowledged us. Another 5 minutes later, he practically riped the money from our hands and threw us out, in a suitably unfriendly tone.

Kim — Google review
Truly delicious food: I had the verdinas con almejas, delicious soup with beans and clams, following by the hake al Boga Boga which was simple relying solely on the fact that it was fresh and moist and tasty. I asked for the seafood hot pot but was told that the kind of fish used for that dish (bonito) is not currently in season. Clearly the daily recommendations are based on what is freshly available. Not cheap but at €30 for the meal, plus coffee and a glass of wine, I would say good value. Wait staff spoke no English but went out if their way to be helpful and we're very pleasant. My only complaint would be that the food came too quickly with not enough space between courses.

We are regular patrons here. Toñín and Mayte run this legendary restaurant. There is no place like Boga Boga when it comes to delicious seafood and super fresh fish. The portions are ample and the prices are moderate for the superb quality. The staff is very charming too. Lobster and crayfish are simply great. I have a weakness for grilled hake (merluza) but any of the fish they offer is guaranteed to be excellent. Be sure to stop by here when in San Vicente.

Restaurant
Restaurante Sotavento is a highly recommended dining spot located in the heart of San Vicente de la Barquera. It is popular among both travelers and locals for its top-quality products, traditional cuisine, and professional service. The restaurant, opened by Alberto Rodriguez and Marta Diaz in 2016, focuses on traditional seafood dishes. Their menu offers a wide variety of options including standout dishes like zamburinas and lobster rice.
I discovered this place only by chance yet it has become one of the best. The octopus tentacle melts in my mouth which is just unbelievable, and the clams taste naturally amazing and I wish I can take the sauce home. The strawberry cheesecake made me cry. Chef Alberto explained many things which helped me learn lots of the cuisine here. I just love this place.

Best clams and lobster ever ! Very friendly and honest owners , the lady suggests to share plates as it will be too much otherwise. There was rice left and they offered us to pack it, we had it for lunch the day after. LOVELY !

We found this restaurant in Google Maps while searching for a place to have lunch in San Vicente and even if we had high expectations, it fullfilled all our expectations! The food was delicious, atmosphere was relaxed and service was extremelly friendly. We really recommend the rice with lobster :)

This was the most delightful meal of our two-week trip to Spain. The service was extremely helpful and friendly. The seafood was super-fresh and expertly prepared. I’m not a huge fan of octopus. It usually bores me, but their grilled octopus was the single best thing we ate on our trip. It was lightly charred but tender, with a tangy pimentón sauce. The clams, rape, and merluza we’re all delicious. Great dessert. And we finished it all off with the local liqueur—orujo. You’ll pay a bit more here, but you’ll also enjoy it more.

This is an amazing restaurant with amaaazing quality food. Lots of love and efforts put into food. Everything homemade and the price is great for the quality. You must go here.

We popped in the day before to book a table. It was lovely fine dining, hosts were helpful even though not much English spoken. Food was excellent, definitely a level above other restaurants in the town. As is the norm in this part of Spain the menu is not really split between starter and mains. Recommend ordering 3 dishes between 2 if you are hungry. Desserts were really rich and yummy.

Seafood restaurant
Restaurante El Bodegón is a family-operated eatery that features unpretentious dining areas and a sheltered patio for enjoying delectable fish and seafood dishes. This establishment warmly welcomes foreign Asian visitors, ensuring their appreciation. The reasonably priced menu offers an array of exquisite seafood options, including grilled monkfish, squid ink bean stew, fresh calamari, and a must-try cheesecake. The amiable wait staff is always ready to assist with wine and food recommendations.
As a foreign Asian visitor, this establishment made me feel more than welcome which I appreciate very much. They serve spectacular seafood for a reasonable price. I had the grilled monk fish, squid ink bean stew and fresh squid calamari, and cheesecake (must try): everything was on point. The wait staff are friendly and helpful in providing recommendations for wine and food. The restaurant is quaint with comfortable alfresco seating. I will definitely visit them again if I come by Cantabria again.

I set my hopes high but unfortunately I found the dishes disappointing. We had some fried calamari (rabas), which they offer in two versions - local, tougher variety (premium prices) and softer type sourced elsewhere (cheaper). The local ones were ok, but the other dishes I tried - not so much. The fish and shellfish soup was very basic and lacked depth of flavor, however the worst experience was paella. Maybe if they named it "arroz con cosas" I would not be so surprised, but what we were served had nothing to do with real paella. I understand that Cantabria is quite far from Valencia, but calling this thing paella was misleading to say the least. The pan was high like a casserole, there was absolutely no socarrat at the bottom and the overall experience was kinda meh. Edible, but in the end we struggled to finish what we ordered. Interesting that they serve paella, but refuse to serve cider with the comments that "this is Cantabria, not Asturias"...

We ordered pulpa de gallega and it was impossible to chew ,so we couldn’t eat it,torrejas was also not tasty -so sweet that you need a lot of water with every bite

Great establishment with professional waiters that gives you excellent service. Prices are correct. The fish soup was amazing I could definitely finish with him and go home happy. We were sorry that we continue to the puplo and the fish - because we didn't had much space and they weren't that good as the soup. Wanted to try the desserts but I was completely full. Over all Very recommend!

The service is completely confusing. Despite the empty tables, they tell you there's no seating for the rest of the day. Then you ask if you can be served at the bar and they say yes. But if you go to the bar, they tell you it's not allowed to serve people there. A well-meaning waiter then takes you to a distant empty table. You sit, order your appetizer, and another waiter appears with customers and tells you that you can't eat at that table; it was reserved. An embarrassing situation for everyone. This restaurant isn't equipped for the summer rush. I recommend any other restaurant.

This has to be the biggest waste of fresh fish and seafood I’ve ever eaten. Navajas de San Vicente bland with no seasoning, a lazy effort from the chef. Croquetas de Marisco were mainly potato. Zamborinas over cooked and the garlic with them burnt. The Merluza a la romana soggy, a waste of a good piece of fish. My wife ordered the Mariscada individual which included raw almejas and raw Cigalas, they took the plate back and recooked it all, even recooked was no better than an amateur cook could cook at home. All of this costing us 129€. The lady serving us was great, the lads at the bar was rude. Only good thing about this restaurant for me, was a cafe con leche at the end.

If you are in town and hungry, no question- go here to eat. If you aren’t hungry? Take a walk, build an appetite then go here. Food is excellent. House wine is a good match. You will need to book, it is very popular, and for good reason.

I had high hopes cause of the good ratings, but got disappointed. The service, expect for 1 person, were very unfriendly, neither saying please or thanks .. we did not feel welcome or wanted. We took the premium version of the anchiovis and were greatly disappointed. 20 euros for standard anchiovis, tasted just like out of the glass of the supermarket. The paella was quite ok. Nothing special. It was missing flavour and depth.
