Paraty

Paraty is a small town backed by mountains on Brazil's Costa Verde, between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. Its Portuguese colonial center has cobbled streets and 17th- and 18th-century buildings dating to its time as a port, during the Brazilian Gold Rush. Among its architectural landmarks is the waterfront Capela de Santa Rita, a whitewashed church built in 1722.

paraty is a great litlle town with beutyfull beaches , and other natural attractions. but the pousadas and hotel in he city center and the hitoric center are too expensive and often fully booked. i recomend to stay in the near by jabaquara beach (20 minutes walk from the historic center or 5 minutes by hourly bus); there you can find cheaper and even better accomodation, and you will be rigth in front of a beutyfull quite beach, which is the only one thing that makes sense of the whole trip to brazil .

Hiking area
Nature & Parks
Sugarloaf Peak (Mamanguá) is a flat-topped peak with stunning views of the tropical fjord below. Visitors can enjoy various activities such as kayaking to deserted beaches, hiking up the peak for impressive views, and exploring the mangrove in canoes. The area also offers opportunities to join the local caicaras for lunch and take private boat tours from Mamangua to Paraty, stopping at islands and isolated beaches along the way.
Such a stunning view! The hike is a bit challenging and took us 1 hour in a moderate tempo. We didn’t meet anyone on the way which made the experience very exclusive and enjoyable. And the view, one of the best I’ve ever experienced!
Herman — Google review
It's possible to get here from Paraty via a public bus and then a water taxi to the fjord. The hike to the peak is tough, it's not particularly far but it is steep and very humid. The view from the top is very impressive.
Benjamin M — Google review
Beautiful hike, but can be challenging about a 30-40 degree incline climb on the way up. It’s a 384 meter climb, took us about 44mins. 1,259 feet Views are stunning
Mike — Google review
A most do! Probably the best view I had of my entire life.
Jean-Philippe N — Google review
The trailhead is accessible by speedboat from Paraty Mirim. The trail is well maintained, moderate difficulty. The view is totally worth it.
Judit P — Google review
Very steep hike to get to the top of Sugarloaf Peak but if you take your time and watch your step, you'll get up there without any injuries. The path is pretty clear and the views from the top are phenomenal.
Lisa T — Google review
Just under an hour up and around 40 mins down for us but it is pretty hard with the heat and humidity. However, the views at the top make it totally worth it. Make sure you go all the way to the top with the rope onto the big rock so you can get incredible 360 views. Then jump in the sea when you get down to cool off :)
Richard C — Google review
Not an easy hike up especially after rainy days but worth it! The view at the top is spectacular!!

Cultural center
Shopping
Casa da Cultura de Paraty, also known as the House of Culture, is a must-visit in the town's historic center. Housed in an 18th-century mansion, this museum offers a comprehensive look at Paraty's history and cultural heritage through photos, artifacts, and personal accounts from residents throughout the ages. The well-curated exhibits beautifully represent the region's cultural and natural heritage. Additionally, visitors can enjoy a friendly café and various cultural activities on-site.
We can see several exhibits related to Paraty. We don’t need to pay admission fee. If you have 30 minutes, you can see all there.
Papipupenta — Google review
Lovely space to learn more about Paraty. There is a QR code to access the translation in English. They accept cash donations.
Lucille B — Google review
Very well curated exhibits that do a great job representing cultural and narural heritage of not only Paraty but also the rest of the region. It's open rather regular hours (a definite bonus) and the space is welcoming, I would recommend this place as it represents a great effort to display local treasures in such a small town. I wish there was a bit of signage in English to make it more accessible but the atmosphere is worth it even without being able to read the details

Beach
Nature & Parks
Praia do Sono is a secluded and tranquil beach accessible by small boats, located near the coastal village of Trindade. It is renowned for its pristine white sands, calm and clear waters perfect for swimming, and hiking trails through rough jungle paths. The area offers simple guest houses and a few families living in the vicinity who work in local restaurants and bars.
Absolutely Incredible place! It was Definitely worth the hike. I can't wait to come back!
K D — Google review
Beautiful beach! I took the bus from the central station in Paraty going to Vila Oratorio. I got down in the last stop, that's where the hike starts. There're signs. Took me almost 1 hour to get to Praia do Sono, it was really hot and the path goes up and down. Can be slippery in some parts. Beware of snakes, spiders and scorpions (there's even a sign about it). I just saw a dead snake in the path. I had lunch in the only place open. It was good. Guess that low season has something to do with it cause there's plenty of bars/restaurants in the shore. There's also camping sites, it's a great option to stay here longer and explore nearby beaches. There's also a 5 nights hike, camping along the way and bringing your own food. The sea had waves, and it was fun! Be conscious about your level in the water as there's no lifeguards or whatsoever. I loved the fact there were few people. Definitely worth coming here for an entire day or more!! I 😊😁😄 I went back hiking, but I saw people taking a boat
M S — Google review
After a walk of 1.30 hour through the jungle get there ( you can go by boat, but it's not the same feeling). The beach is very beautiful and clean. There is a variety of restaurants even being an isolated beach. There are lots of camping sites if you want to stay overnight.
FERNANDO R — Google review
You can reach Praia do Sono by walking through a 3km trail. It's not a difficult one but be sure to use repellent.

Great place to stop by, worth the visit. You can get there by hiking or taxi boat. I went hinking and at the end of the day I got a boat back to our car. The locals are very receptive and their food is amazing, you won't regret the visit. Don't be afraid of the dogs they are friendly and like to be around for company and they like to play.

Perfect place to rest. Not so easy access making this place more calm.
Emil K — Google review
Easy to get there from Paraty. Bus leaves fairly regularly to Vila Oratorio and from there you can walk the (fairly) simple 3km walk to the beach. It was pretty slippery when I went but if you are of reasonable fitness then it shouldn’t be a problem.

Restaurant
Restaurante Banana da Terra is a renowned dining spot in Paraty, offering traditional coastal Brazilian dishes in an elegant colonial villa with charming garden tables. The restaurant is known for its fresh-caught local fish and shrimp, making it a top choice for seafood enthusiasts. For those seeking a unique experience, the Academy of Cooking and Other Pleasures hosted by Brazilian chef Yara Castro Roberts and her husband Richard Roberts offers dinner events combined with cooking classes.
This restaurant is a must if you’re in Paraty! It was our favorite meal out. The NYT wrote about it and did not overhype the food. Every dish was delicious and creative in its own way without being overly rich or dramatic. The wine list is pleasant. Only feedback would be that the staff be a bit friendlier and more welcoming. They were efficient and not unpleasant but just dry and cold.
Katie P — Google review
Food is delicious - we had the octopus, the filled squid with rice and iced coconut cake. Everything was full of taste, with good portions and fresh ingredients. Service is really professional too and decor is of higher standards than the rest of restaurants in Paraty. Highly recommended.
Chiara P — Google review
We had the filled squid with creamy rice and the fish with heart of palm risotto (apparently the most ordered dish). The squid was bland, the filling inside wasn’t tasty and it came with a bland creamy rice. Very disappointing. The fish with risotto was ok, but missing that “punch” flavour. Dessert was amazing (banana pie with cinnamon ice cream), saved the day as the other dishes need a LOT of improvement. Drinks were good. Overall too expensive for what they offer, there are much better restaurants in the area with fair price (others same price, but outstanding dishes).
Vanessa M — Google review
Incredible experience! Every dish at Banana da Terra was beautifully presented and full of flavour. The atmosphere is warm and charming, and the service was excellent. We loved every bite and can’t wait to come back. A must-visit in Paraty!
Camila M — Google review
Refined Brazilian cuisine in a charming colonial setting. Nestled in the historic center, the restaurant blends rustic charm with a refined, welcoming atmosphere. 🇧🇷✨ The food was outstanding — fresh, creative, and beautifully presented. We tried a dish made with 30-day aged fish, an octopus carpaccio, and a baked octopus dish that was truly the best we’ve ever had. 🐙 Every bite was memorable, with flavors that celebrated Brazilian ingredients in a sophisticated way. Service was warm and attentive, if you’re in Paraty and looking for a standout meal, Banana da Terra is a must. It is a bit pricey but it is definitely top notch.
John N — Google review
We are on a 2 week honeymoon in Brazil and this may have been our best meal. The bread is spectacular, and they brought out some free appetizers including smoked fish, pumpkin soup, and a croquette that was amazing. We then had some cheese balls as another appetizer, and then the crusted fish and squid risotto for dinner all of which was excellent. The service was top notch and we felt that it was a meal that merited a tip beyond the usual 10%. Highly creative and delicious meal that we strongly recommend.
Collier B — Google review
Banana da Terra completely exceeded my expectations. Out of all the places I’ve been to so far in Rio and Paraty, this was hands down the best customer service. Everyone was incredibly attentive and welcoming. It made the whole experience even better. And the food? Absolutely to die for. The octopus was my favorite, beautifully cooked, full of flavor, and plated with such a vibrant mix of colors. I loved it so much I had it twice during my 3-day trip. Definitely a must-visit if you’re in Paraty.
Itza B — Google review
I was left a disappointed with this meal given the price point and reputation. Both my starter and main were pleasant, but neither hit the mark as meals I’ll remember. I was hoping for more flavour wise, my tempura main felt monotonous. Maybe other dishes are better, but I’d hoped this was a restaurant that could make a food veggie main. Service was good and friendly, but the atmosphere in the room past the main dining space felt a bit lacking - at least one other couple asked to move.

Wonderful place. Delicious seafood paella, tasty and fresh! And Paula is really nice for help and others from the restaurant helped us and gave such great recommendations! And helped us to get a taxi too! Awesome place to go!

Tasty food and incredible service. Good options for seafood and with a very nice spot next to the pier and the sea. Very tranquile place in the autumn (visited in May). Andre was our waiter and he was exceptional, both in service and humor. Would recomend if you can afford.
Carolina L — Google review
Wow, this may be the best food we've had in Brazil (to be fair, we've only been here for a week). Our waitress, Ana, was so helpful and was able to help us order in English. We had great service but better yet, everything we ordered was delicious. The creamy brie and octopus carpaccio were so so good. My husband ordered the camarão bobó and I had the seafood medley pasta. Both were to die for. We shouldn't have had any dessert because we were stuffed but the farm bananas were too good to pass up and they did not disappoint. Highly recommend this beautifully decorated restaurant near the pier. The soft sounds of the water just made it all that much better. We will be back the next time we're in Paraty!

Beware the cover charge!! We went in for one quick beer (34 sol), then the bill came and it was 80sol. 5 sol service (fair) plus 36 cover charge. We were only there 30 minutes so we asked if they could take it off but they said it was a flat rate. I wish we had known and we would have gone somehwre else!

Is recommended by many. Nice ambience, with beautiful terrace and cosy inside. But as we read online, half of the dish is ‘being forgotten’. Friendly staff though.

Amazing place, colorful, very close to the sea, with the very friendly and smiling staff, who make you feel at home. Food marvelous! Drinks great! They have live music, a very good singer performing songs by Amy Winehouse and Norah Jones... Do not miss if in Paraty!!!

This was, without a doubt, the worst dining experience I’ve ever had. I’ve traveled extensively, I’m a passionate foodie, and I work in the food industry myself — serving hundreds of thousands of guests at major events like the Oscars and the Super Bowl. I know what real hospitality looks like, and what happened here today was completely unacceptable. We waited over two hours and never received our food. After taking our order, the server’s phone died — and instead of telling us, we had to reorder everything ourselves. Then they came back again to tell us they were out of the shrimp we’d ordered. The only other shrimp option was an upcharge. And they didn’t have the fish my brother-in-law ordered either. Just chaos. Meanwhile, my father-in-law and our guests from Italy — seated at a separate table — were served, ate, paid, and left before we ever got a single dish. Even their table had issues: they brought out only 3 of the 4 entrees and forgot one completely. His wife asked for a salad instead — something quick — and never got that either. To make matters worse, the server dropped a drink on my sister-in-law and never cleaned it up. That mess, along with our uncleared drinks, attracted bees that swarmed our table — while we were already getting eaten alive by mosquitoes. It was unsanitary, uncomfortable, and careless. And then, as we finally got up to leave after this exhausting mess, the server looked at me and asked why my face looked so ugly. After they failed to serve us. After they disrespected my family. That kind of behavior is absolutely outrageous. This wasn’t just poor service — it was disgraceful. In all my years in the industry, I’ve never experienced anything like it. Unprofessional, bizarre, and deeply disrespectful. I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone, ever.

Probably the best restaurant in Paraty! We’be been yesterday at the Banana a Terra and honestly was a bit of a disappointment… tonight we decided to have dinner at the hotel restaurant (Quintal das Letras) and what a good decision this was! Food is just amazing. Superb combinations of flavors, quality of the products and excellent presentation. The wine menu could be improved, but still very good for Paraty. Service was very good as well.

Recommendable all around from a taste-quantity-price and ambiente-level. This is a place for Brasilian food in its core with international twists to it. Starters: We shared starters here and they were delicious. - Grilled shrimp (Camarão) - Ceviche (Peixe crudo, leite de tigre) Minor comments: The Ceviche could have had 1 crunchy element to it (In Peru it’s roasted maize for example). The fish was great. The shrimp was ‘drowning’ a little bit in sauce (though delicious); as I personally wanted to taste the shrimp as much as possible. Main: Was a traditional fish stew with coconut milk base (Moqueca) and other regional ingredients. It was comforting and tasty. Bonus: They brought a chilli oil without request. It was something that opened up the flavours even stronger and was maybe the most memorable chilli oil I have tasted thus far. Deserts: Chocolate mousse. Very nicely served in a dried half of a kakao fruit. As most dishes we experienced in Brasil, it was really a lot of quantity. It can be shared easily. Drinks: Jorge Amado, Coco were really nice - they were on the very strong end of the scale of liquor content (Depending how much you like cachaça, you can ask for less liquor or at more water) All the best!

This is THE best restaurant in Paraty. I’ve been there multiple times and they’re consistently great. Prices are similar to other restaurants in the area but the food is definitely better.

A classy spot at the end of a busy street. They seated my wife and I as walk ins with no reservation. I had the pork belly, she had the fish filet with honey. Both fresh and excellent. They have a selection of local beers also which were good! The mixed drinks were strong and our waiter was smart, helpful and well informed. It had AC if you want some chill. Recommend.
Nicolas L — Google review
A very chic and elegant interior design. The owner spoke perfect English and was very accomodating - she explained the dishes with great detail and perplexity. Some of the food concepts were very unique and intruiging. The thing that amazed me most was that the restaurant had it's own mini allotment neary where they grow a lot of the vegetables used in the dishes. This was very apparent in the freshness of the food. I would recommend this place.

Margarida Café Paraty is a vibrant venue located at the beginning of the historic center, offering a diverse menu that includes global cuisine and exclusive chef creations. The café's distinctive and somewhat kitschy ambiance, along with live music performances before the pandemic, adds to its lively atmosphere. With 15 years of experience, it has established itself as one of the best restaurants in Paraty, providing sophisticated and varied gastronomy.
Amazing food with huge portions. Beautiful restaurant, attentive service and wonderful atmosphere. We ordered the medium pizza and also the ribs. Both were huge portions. The ribs were the size of three of my (large) hands. I took the ribs home and had a further 3 meals with them! *see photos for reference* Cannot recommend this restaurant enough. The waiters were also very attentive and patient.

Good restaurant in the historic center of Paraty. Excellent decor, atmosphere and service. The food is not very tasty. Capelletti of galinha caipira was not good. The steak was good. Caipirinha drink was very good and on the house. The live music was great. Price was fair for what we had. I recommend but be careful with what you order.

Impressed with the food at Margarida Cafe! We got their specialty of the day - steak with mushroom sauce, pumpkin starter and Brie ravioli. Incredible food, that steak was one of the best things I have ever eaten. Lovely staff, very kind with my lack of Portuguese.

The food as well as the service were good overall. They charged 22 reais for the live music and 3 reais for the “optional tourist tax”. The real problem started at the end of the dinner when my girlfriend went to the bathroom and another woman (not sure whether she was another customer or a someone’s friend) puked all over my girlfriend as well as her jacket and purse, given that the other bathrooms were occupied. I first present the issue to the waiters and, once they get to the bathroom, they comfort the girl who puked and do not offer a solution for us (maybe cause we are gringos, who knows). Therefore I asked to talk with the manager and he also doesn’t offer to clean the puke from the bag and clothes. Instead, they come up with the idea to give us bags to put the dirty stuff in it. Pretty surreal situation

Thai restaurant
Thai Brasil is a vibrant and relaxed restaurant known for serving classic Thai dishes such as pad thai, curries, and papaya salad. It is considered one of the best Thai restaurants in Brazil and is led by chef Marina Schlaghaufer. The menu offers a variety of authentic Thai recipes including salads, soups, grilled dishes, and curries with meat, seafood, or vegetarian options.
There were some mixed reviews about this restaurant, but here’s my experience. I arrived at just the right time and didn’t have to wait for a table, though it did take a while for my food to come out. I ordered a cocktail, Tom Yum soup, and Pad Thai. The cocktail was tasty, though it didn’t feel very strong — not sure if that’s a good or bad thing. The Tom Yum soup was excellent: sweet, salty, sour, savory and the right level of spiciness, with lots of seafood. It was very flavorful and probably the highlight of my meal. The Pad Thai came about 15 minutes later. I was craving noodles, and this was the only noodle dish available. It tasted fine, but it didn’t quite resemble a traditional Pad Thai. It was more like a regular stir-fried noodle dish and seemed to be missing the distinct tangy-sour notes from tamarind paste. Service-wise, I had to wait a while to get the check and eventually went up to the counter to pay. The restaurant was completely packed, which I think speaks to its popularity. Overall, the food quality was high, the flavors were enjoyable (especially the Tom Yum), and the atmosphere was lively.
Henry C — Google review
The experience at Thai Brasil was mixed. The portions are generous, but the green curry was far too sweet for our taste. We waited over 40 minutes for our food, and a second round of drinks—ordered when the food arrived—only showed up when we were about to leave. Service was fair, though not particularly warm. The decor is eclectic, leaning more toward arts and crafts than professional design—think a mix of Christmas ornaments and leopard print. It’s also quite loud, which made conversation difficult. There’s only one toilet per gender, so expect occasional lines. If you’re looking for a vibrant spot with big portions, it might suit you, but be prepared for slow service and a very handmade feel.
Emanuel I — Google review
Beautiful quirky ambiance, yummy food and drinks and had an English menu! The staff were very nice, answered questions and gave recommendations for the best food to take to go. It was a bit expensive but it’s in the main tourist area, so fair enough.

Love love love this restaurant! The food was so good, some of the best ive had outside Thailand - we had spring rolls, pad Thai and red fish curry - highly recommend them all! It is a bit expensive for Brazil, was similar prices to the UK with mains around the $98 reals mark and cocktails around the $45 reals mark, but Paraty is V touristy so perhaps to be expected - this was my most expensive meal out of 3 in the town but worth it IMO.

Best Thai food we've eaten in a loooong time. There was a 45-minute wait the night we visited due to two large parties that walked in just before us. But the food was definitely worth the wait! Our foodie friends said it was the best meal they'd eaten in the last two months: high praise.

They don’t disappoint on the presentation of the food nor the taste. They truly have a good variety and it is a fun mixture between Brazilian and Thai food. It is prepared very fresh in front of your eyes. You can see into the kitchen and see all the fresh ingredients that they are using. The restaurant seems to be very popular therefore service was a bit slow. This restaurant also had a really large section of the menu with vegetarian options, which were just as great as the rest of the menu.

Our wonderful hotel suggested this restaurant and it was a superb choice! Service was very polite and friendly, we were given an English menus which was very helpful. As the portions in Brazil seem to be pretty large, we decided to choose one starter and one main course, and share them both at the same time. This was a great idea and enough food for two people.. unless you’re a fatty ;-) So, we shared the: SEA FOOD SALAD (With BEAN SPROUTS, ONION, GARLIC CHiVES and CORIANDER, and as a main we shared the: RED FiSH CURRY (With VEGETABLES and KAFFIR LIME LEAVES), which came with a portion of steamed rice. The herbs are grown in the restaurant garden - that’s pretty cool ! We asked to have the spicy hot versions of both dishes and the spice levels were great. Also not to forget the drinks, we had a couple and these were excellent- see the photos! All in all, a very good restaurant I’d highly recommend.
