San Pedro de Atacama

San Pedro de Atacama is a town set on an arid high plateau in the Andes mountains of northeastern Chile. Its dramatic surrouding landscape incorporates desert, salt flats, volcanoes, geysers and hot springs. The Valle de la Luna in the nearby Los Flamencos National Reserve is a lunarlike depression with unusual rock formations, a huge sand dune and pink-streaked mountains.

Piedras Rojas Hostal is located in the Altiplanic lagoons area, offering a full-day tour that covers various sites including Miscanti Lake, Laguna Miniques, Los Flamencos National Reserve, Salar de Aguas Calientes, and Piedras Rojas.
We were probably the first ones who stayed there. We rented a double room for 46$ with two comfy beds and a nice bathroom. There was only cold water but that's nothing that matters at least during thw hot summer months. It was very clean. It's a block from the bus station so a little far from the center.

Machuca is a beautiful and clean tourist destination with stunning ancestral buildings. Visitors can explore the local flora and fauna while enjoying the sale of llama meat anticuchos, making it a highly recommended experience. Many find it liberating to visit this precious place, as everything about it is simply wonderful.

(Translated by Google) A village between San Pedro and El Tatio, where you can eat a delicious llama meat skewer and a goat cheese empanada. The best meat I've ever had after the wagyu. The only problem is that the prices there are way overpriced, precisely because it's a stopover for several vans that go to El Tatio. There's probably some kind of bribery scheme going on, but just to give you an idea, we paid an average of 4-5 thousand pesos per item (at the current exchange rate, it was an average of 25-35 reais). We bought 3 empanadas, 4 llama skewers and a coffee and spent almost 350 reais. In addition to the fortune it costs to snack there, they charge you to use the bathroom, lol. The village is quite picturesque, but in general, as always, the people aren't very friendly, except for the barbecue chef, who is extremely friendly and lively. It is worth a visit just for the uniqueness of the houses and the village. In addition, the landscape near the village is very beautiful.

Youth hostel
Casa Voyage Hostel in San Pedro de Atacama, Chile offers a cozy and laid-back atmosphere with vibrant murals, a communal kitchen, and cultural events. Guests can expect late nights by the bonfire, mingling with fellow backpackers, and enjoying traditional meals. The hostel provides spacious lounges, hammocks for relaxation, and organizes tours and dinners to facilitate connections among travelers. It's recommended for solo travelers as well as those seeking private rooms or domes.
Best Hostel in town. It has a really nice crowd of travelers, which are easy to get to know when there is a dinner option (pizza / burger / asados & beer) every evening for a fair price! The pool is amazing for chilling and taking a refreshing dip. Everything is clean, laundry costs 2.000/kg. Kitchen is super well equipped and staff is very friendly. It is a 10min walk to the city center. Be sure to book in advance (at least one week) as it sells out quickly!
Mary T — Google review
Chile is notorious for its bad customer service but what I encountered at Casa Voyage is beyond appalling. When I made my reservation I asked for a lower bunk bed as I had a foot injury. Not only did they not care about my request and my injury, but they went out of their way not to give me one even when one became available. Receptionist Felipe showed a disgusting attitude, apparently thinking that tourists need to be put in their place and should bow down to him. Little does he understand that without tourists, he’d have no job, let alone have a little empathy and basic human to human understanding and warmth. I won’t go into the details of the ugly exchange I had with this individual, but in his words they don’t need our money, they don’t need tourists. So go spend yours somewhere else where you might be valued and respected as a guest. I wrote a formal complaint to the owner of Casa Voyage, but the response wasn’t too promising. As for the hostel itself, it’s too far from everything and you won’t want to stay there. Their rental bikes and other services are pricier than in other places. The rooms are crammed with people; not a single hook in sight so you need to sleep with your wet towel. The showers and sinks are outside and you’ll be freezing early morning and late at night while brushing your teeth. The bedding and pillows didn’t feel fresh.

Casa Voyage was my favourite hostel in San Pedro! I stayed at three different places during my time there, and this one stood out. The staff were super friendly and welcoming, the beds were comfy with privacy curtains and the communal areas had a great relaxed vibe. They also organised fun evening activities, which made it really easy to meet other travellers. Highly recommend!
Steph S — Google review
Stayed for 4 nights and was very glad to be there. The Atacama is proper dusty (as deserts often are) and so to have somewhere nice to come back to was 'muy bueno'. Most importantly, the lady who worked there, Paulette, was great. I reckon I asked her eight million annoying questions and got very helpful answers. They also had a dusty desert dog and a cute Cate which was wicked. Muy Bruno.
Michael Q — Google review
Great hostel - lots of good areas to chill out (especially by the pool). Very clean. Helpful staff. We stayed in a private room (by the dog kennel) and on 3 occasions, people tried to get into our room thinking it was the bathroom / reception etc. The room doesn’t have a number/name, so perhaps this would be a good addition to avoid confusion.
Grace O — Google review
The way I feel about casa voyage is really quite mixed - the hostel itself was nice enough, facilities were basic and the beds were as comfortable as you’d expect from a hostel in a pretty remote part of South America. It was however riddled with classic Latin American incompetence. I thought the 2 receptionists working the front desk weee always a little dismissive and rude, treating you as ‘just another unsatisfied tourist’. The hostel dorm was small, especially for the very pricey rate $22 a night. There was essentially no space to hang up wet towels or store bags in the dorm. Showers having hot water was unreliable, and were not exactly clean either. The worst thing however about this hostel is the fact that they only took cash - why all knew why, but they shut us down when we enquired about paying with card. ATM fees for foreign cards in San Pedro de Atacama are absolutely extortionate - banco de Chile will add on a surcharge of 5,500 - 8,000 ($6-9). This makes it extremely difficult paying for things at the end of your tour when you’re running low on local currency. My advice : pick a hostel that takes card! The only thing dragging this up from a 2* to a 3* stay is the group of people it attracts! We had simply great dinners provided by the hostel, with people from all dormitories gathering in the very cosy communal space Casa Voyage had. The hostel dinners are also pretty cheap at 7000 CLP, which ranged from burgers, pizza and asados with beer included each time. The same affordability cannot be said of their tours (which of course you must pay for in cash). I would recommend going to other agencies in San Pedro located in the Main Street. You’ll get a very competitive price especially if you book a tour package.
Ferdinand G — Google review
Hostel is okay, but for me a lot too pricey. Friends of mine stayed in the „Aji Verde“ and paid half the price for a much nicer hostel. Staff is not really helpful, bathrooms are tiny and not nice and at night it’s freezing cold in the rooms. Also don’t rent Sandboards there, overpriced and really bad! At my stay I forgot a little booklet there and I am trying to get it sent to me than more than two weeks!!!! I am willing to pay for it and they couldn’t manage to go to the post office once in 2 weeks to ask for the price - no customer service at all. No recommendation sorry.

Altiplano Expediciones offers an authentic adventure in Chile, taking travelers to the high plateau of Altiplano, which sits at an impressive 13,125 feet above the desert floor. This iconic region is part of the Atacama Desert and is known for its llamas, salt flats, and blue lagoons. Unlike other travel agencies that focus on crowded tourist spots near San Pedro Atacama, Altiplano Expediciones provides a unique experience away from the crowds.
Jorge from Altiplano Expediciones was recommended to us by our hotel. He did several tailor-made tours with us during our stay in the Atacama region, including Valle de la Luna, Geyser del Tatio, Cycling in Valle de Catarpe and Piedras Rojas. He is very knowledgeable of the region and its culture. Highly recommended.

Jorge thank you for your reply. I’m here to explain why I rated so low. There are too many things that I want to say but I couldn’t finish it all in the same day. The tour was good, Jorge was a professional tour guide. We participated 3 days tour with him and accommodated in his house for 4 nights booked via airbnb. Everything was good till the last day. The poor communication and he left us false comment. When our friend asked him that if we can use the washing machine the answer he gave her was yes but didn’t tell her if we use more than one time it’ll be an additional charge. Just like when you go to a buffet, after you take one round and are going to take the second round they say: you eat too much, normally clientes only take one round, I have to charge you per rounds. If you have condition for the washing machine it’s ok but you have to say it clearly and say it before we use. He left comment that we did 8 times washes. Actually we only washed 4 times. He said: “normally” we don’t charge because guests will only use one time. We are 6 people and accommodated there 4 nights. Is that a over use? He left comment that we had to pay 3.000 peso but only paid him 2.500 peso. In the parking of the airport I gave him 10.000 peso for the washing. It was him that he said he didn’t have change and asked me to keep the money. For the return we knew the money wasn’t enough but still paid him 2.500 peso for making up a little bit the cost. I personally don’t recommend this hostal nor his tour. If you still are interested in this, you can try but before do anything just remember to ask 108 times to make sure there isn’t another condition. Good luck to everyone for never encountering any host like this.

If you are looking for an authentic adventure discovering Chile, Cota6000 is perhaps the only travel agency that can offer such an experience. Like many tourists I have done my research but found that most firms offer trips to the same sights near San Pedro Atacama and whilst they are beautiful they are often crowded and full of eager visitors and their selfie sticks. Nothing wrong with that because we all like different things but I wanted to see true Chile away from the crowds. Jorge, who runs the business, was able to design a bespoke itinerary for me and completely off the beaten path with all logistics carefully and professionaly planned. We travelled across Northern part of Chile, visiting tiny towns with their quaint churches, exploring gorgeous high plains and waiving hello to alpacas and lamas, picking fruit from a cactus with a local lady, climbing a volcano and spending the night camping by a hot spring under the stars...just too many wonderful experiences that are hard to put in one review. It is clear that Jorge has true passion for his country and nature and that he loves sharing it with others. His busines profile says it all. All I can say is this was a one of a kind adventure and I look forward to my next one with Cota6000. This time exploring the South

Specialty Museums
The Meteorite Museum is a scientific museum located in geodesic domes, showcasing an extensive collection of meteorites. The museum offers a personal and private collection of mainly Atacama meteorites gathered over 35 years. Visitors can expect an in-depth explanation of each source of meteoric material with multiple examples that they can handle. The museum provides a twenty-minute tour that is a must-see for anyone interested in learning about what falls to earth through the atmosphere.
I knew this museum would be cool, but I didn’t expect to learn so much! There is an audio guide and multimedia to help you learn about different types of meteorites and their composition. You can even handle some and play with magnets. We spent about 45 minutes there and it was well worth the $5pp entry. The staff was knowledgeable and friendly. It’s only open in the evening so plan ahead so you don’t miss this!

An excellent museum! A treasure trove of information presented in a very interesting manner. Exciting to see 40 years of effort and dedication to amass such an impressive collection. Our guide was so kind, knowledgeable and spoke fluent English. And the dome used to house these meteorites was really cool too! Thank you for sharing your passion with us!

Definitely one of the best museums I've ever visited. Low budget, high value, excellent audio guide, incredible to see: - physical objects that are older than our earth or our solar system. (4.5 billion years old), that have only been on earth for 1-2 million years. - meteorites with the amino acids from which possibly life later emerged The people behind this should be proud of themselves.

A very nice experience at the Museo del Meteorito! The exhibits are informative and nicely presented, offering an insight into meteorites. It was to have the opportunity to touch real meteorite specimens. Adobe is a renowned restaurant in San Pedro de Atacama, highly recommended by Lonely Planet and the Guide to the 100 Best Restaurants in Chile. It's known for its gourmet menu that combines traditional cuisine with local products. The restaurant offers an elegant and rustic ambiance with wooden pergolas, brown adobe walls, and a communal bonfire space. The alfresco dining patio is always bustling due to its inviting atmosphere and delicious, generous servings of Chilean and international dishes.
This place was really good. Lively atmosphere, friendly staff, great Food and service. They had live music as well. They were quick and efficient. The portions were huge and the prices were a little above average. Overall a must try spot that you will enjoy.
Prakash P — Google review
The restaurant was very charming, with a cozy fire pit and live music that created a great atmosphere. The food was good and nicely presented, though I’ve had more authentic Chilean dishes elsewhere. It’s worth noting that the portions are more “European-style”, smaller than in typical Chilean restaurants. But for me, it was enough and tasty overall. And the desserts were absolutely incredible! 🔥
Momo C — Google review
Saw this place recommended online so I took my mom there for a fancier dinner after one of our tours. The scene was interesting - speakers all along the side of the wall which were mildly annoying when we wanted to speak to each other… but our waiter and all of the waitstaff were very attentive and polite, making sure to check in on us at all stages of our meals. My mom ordered the mint lemonade (loved it - very refreshing) and then we shared the Ensalada Fresca which we were skeptical about with the price but it was HUGE and so lovely. Then, I ordered the Pil Pil shrimp which were cooked to perfection and served in a boiling hot butter sauce (yum). My mom ordered the Lomo Roquefort which kinda fell flat - we liked the idea of the salty sweet combination with the fig and the cheese but it just was not executed correctly. Also, my mom ordered her filet medium and it was probably the most rare steak I have seen. The quinoa was oddly sweet as well which we were not expecting. I could see the vision, but the end result was not what either of us wanted.

We had a brilliant dinner here at Adobe and our server Erick was extremely sweet and helpful in recommending which wine and mains we should get! Seaweed ceviche was nice while the prawn pilpil is a MUST GET. We slurped every last drop. Fish and beef were also lovely. Live music and a warm bonfire were the cherry on top of the cake.

Located in San Pedro de Atacama, Chile, Heladería Babalú is renowned for its delicious Italian ice cream and wide variety of exotic flavors, many of which are made with local products. Visitors rave about the excellent quality and diversity of the ice cream options as well as the option to take their treats to go. Some popular flavors include rica rica, chanar chips, hoja de coca, cactus ayrampo, and algarrobo.
A lot of different and local flavors, worthy try some options. The service was good, it is a traditional ice cream
Rafael S — Google review
Cool concept but as someone who's sampled most of the unique flavors, it's mostly overrated. I cant say if $3usd (4.90 for 2) is high for the region but is otherwise high for South America! I was verbally requested to tip during payment on my first visit by a chico. Very bold! There was a nasty chica who kept saying 2 SAMPLES ONLY after her colleage already gave me several. If it's a rule, post it! You have extremely unique flavors in a tourist town at a high cost per scoop. IF YOU WANT SALES YOU MUST ALLOW MANY SAMPLES. That's life. Second visit she wasnt there and was fine but I noticed a giant tip jar for "an iphone" or whatever. Very tasteless. That said, of all the flavors I had I only liked two: catcus is good and selva negra (black forest cake) is addictive!
Morgan B — Google review
They have vegan options -you must ask because there are no signs. You are allowed two samples per person. We had the flor del desierto (not much taste but still also very tasty), pisco sour, orange carrot (so delicious!). Kind, helpful staff. Can get ice cream in cone (not vegan) or cup, healthy portions
Donna C — Google review
The ice cream tastes exceptional and most important: it is made with natural ingredients. Each flavor comes through and is just the right amount of sweet. We were very surprised and didn’t expect much since I don’t think that Chileans are known for their ice cream skills. But since I taste ice cream and gelato all over the world I needed to give this place a fair try. The coconut, mint and passion fruit ice cream are the best I have ever tasted. And I’ve been to Italy many times! Hazelnut was still good and natural tasting, but did not compare to gelato places in Florence - still decent though. It is definitely on the pricey side but depending on your budget worth trying :) And the service could’ve been more friendly and welcoming, had the feeling they were a bit uninterested/bored

We ordered our meat medium and it came well done. No sauces/condiments came with the meat and when we asked for some they said yes but none arrived. Don’t like to leave bad reviews but don’t feel 4.5 is reflective of experience. It also wasn’t cheap and didn’t open on time.

Ordered their Quesadillas mixtas, their salsa, and the menu of the day are good. Good quality food! Price is very reasonable and not marked up. Go here to be pleasantly surprised :) Thank you!

Had a great simple lunch here. Went with the set menu del día which came with a light seafood soup as a starter, pollo a la naranja, which was delicious and a fruit salad for dessert. All of it was flavorful and fresh. The servers were friendly and attentive. The atmosphere was relaxed and comfortable, perfect for a nice afternoon lunch.

The prix fixe menu is a great deal at 7,000 pesos. The food was well prepared and tasty. The vegetable soup, fish, potatoes and salad were all good and healthy, too.

The best value for money in San Pedro for dinner out with a quality atmospheres. The Parilla was outstanding and the amount of food for 2 people meant we left with extras. The prices, compared to other restaurants in San Pedro were not marked up. The staff provided welcoming, attentive service. Our best dining experience there was

Excellent price for good food and large portions. For our first visit, we had chicken with 2 sides for 7000 CLP and the sol inti sandwich for 5300 CLP (pictures). The service was a bit slow, because it was quite busy at 20h30 at night. Still, we left full and satisfied. We came back twice after that, once trying the menu del dia which was also well-served and tasty for only 7000 CLP. We also took sandwich for take out (they only do sandwich and salad for take out), and the ham and cheese sandwich was not good. I would recommend for good portions of tasty food at fair prices.

Best prices in the area, also lots of variety. We had a sandwich and menu of the day (which comes with salad/soup and dessert).

Baltinache Restaurant is a unique dining spot that aims to blend innovation and gastronomic fusion with traditional Atacama cuisine. The menu features exotic flavors using local ingredients, such as guanaco anticuchos and frangollo, complemented by rich rica rica sauces. The intimate and cozy ambiance, with limited seating, makes it advisable to make reservations in advance.
We were told this was the best restaurant in San Pedro de Atacama, so we had to check it out. Getting a reservation was straightforward. I just messaged them on Whatsapp, and the restaurant was super responsive. We were able to get a table same day. The menu is prix fixe and the food was solid. We got: 1) Sopaipilla y guacamole - This fried dough amuse bouche was so yummy. The guacamole was incredibly fresh and full of spice and flavor 2) Cream of zucchini with pumpkin seeds - this dish was also wonderful. Just the right amount of zucchini aroma, with a much welcomed spicy kick 2a) The other appetizer option was a caprese salad with pesto and toasted corn. This was beautifully plated, fresh, and yummy 3) Charred duck with dried pear sauce, lima beans, giant corn kernels, squash, and balsamic reduction. The duck was cooked a nice medium but still a bit tough 4) Mousse made from añapa local dried fruit, topped with red berries and quinoa. The mousse was very light and fluffy. It had very subtle hints of vanilla and supported the sweet tartness of the red berries well. 4a) The other dessert option was quinoa flan with cactus seeds. This was reeeaally sweet. Overall, I really enjoyed our meal. It is a bit pricey for what you get, but considering you're in the middle of the desert, the restaurant did a fine job. Service was a bit slow but very friendly.

Incredible meal in San Pedro. The starter, main course as well as the dessert was great. The wine list is small but we had the best wine on the trip so far. The service is impeccable.

Food: The food had a great presentation and the taste had a great balance of various tastes some of which were very new to me (since they used herbs and foods native to the region). Service: The waiter was very friendly and professional (which is rare to see these days). Atmosphere: The place was small and cozy. I liked that they only served a few tables a day (only through previous reservation) allowing them to keep quality over quantity. I highly recommend this place. So much that I actually went there two days in a row.

Small restaurant with only a few tables. Three course menu was delicious and beautifully presented. We had a bottle of wine which was also delicious. Our server was full of smiles and ready to do whatever to make us happy and comfortable. It was a bit pricey and not for people looking for a quick meal. Easily a top pick in San Pedro.

Wonderful place - high quality food, exceptional service and great wines. It is a bit upscale - fixed menu (meat or fish) but worth every penny. Thank you and I will definitely come back!

Lovely place. Fixed daily menu. Local ingredients, very inspiring. Waiters are amazingly professional and friendly. Presentation is great, food is good. One suggestion: focus more on simplicity, one dish per plate, less is more.

We were a bit disappointed by this restaurant, especially given the price. We waited for one hour until we got our starters. The food was neither great nor terrible but wasn't worth the price. The wine and the pisco sours were excellent and the waiter was friendly.

The food was just mediocre at best. The salad was good but the pumpkin soup soup was very bland. The salmon was alright while the meat and sausage were pretty good. The desserts were the total disappointment. The Panna cotta came with chocolate which was totally out of place. The chocolate in the dish seems to be the low quality one. The apple pie was pretty bland and came with roasted chick pea, strawberry and chocolate drop. It seemed very eclectic. The flavor combination does not go together at all.

Located just a short stroll from the main avenue of San Pedro, Las Delicias de Carmen is a charming and unpretentious eatery that attracts mostly locals. Renowned for its generous portions of traditional Chilean and Atacama dishes, this spot is a favorite among residents. The owner, Carmen, lends her name to the establishment which offers hearty soups and stews like patasca made with beef, white corn, and potatoes.
In my opinion the best restaurant of San Pedro de Atacama. Here you can try the most traditional food (I recommend pastel de choclo). The staff was perfect, we had questions about the size of the dish and the attendant simply brought a prepared dish to show us how it would be. Along with this they have free dessert and the environment is cute. It is not expensive comparing with other San Pedro’s restaurants.

Food was okay, but quite expensive, every main dish around 20€. French Fries were not really fried and the tomato Salat cant be called a salat. There are better and cheaper places in Atacama.

This is another one of the well-known restaurants in town that serves several traditional dishes. The portions are large and can easily be shared, which is a plus. However, the food lacked flavor and overall quality, falling short of what you’d expect for the price.

Great first-day dinner experience! On our first day, we visited this restaurant and ordered steak and soup – we paid 65,000 pesos in total. Honestly, the steak was huge, and the portion size overall was absolutely massive. The food was very good – the steak was a bit overdone, but still tasty and definitely worth the price. We also ordered soup, and that too came in an enormous portion. We were completely full – we couldn’t even fit in dessert afterward! We were really happy with the meal. The portions were big, the food was tasty, and the service was lovely – the waitress was very kind and attentive. All in all, a great spot for lunch or dinner if you’re looking for good food and generous portions.

The cazuela was okay, the pollo al pil pil was decent. It felt quite pricey for what you get. I felt they could've been more generous with their bread - we received a single, small piece of bun between the two of us.

Had a simple dinner here. All was good, until the bill when they automatically put on 10%. Table service was friendly. Meal a little expensive

Lil bit pricey and they were out of the cazuela (which is what I went there for) bt over all, very nice. Good people, God atmosphere, and very very nice food. Locals spot. Well found in my opinion. Would definitely go again. Infact I will go again to try the cazuela.

Working in the business for over 20 years. Let’s start from the prices: fries 7000, bottle of austral lager 5000, espresso 3000..serious? Drop the prices and sell more! As a suggestion. Cazuela 5 / lomo a la pobre 4 for the quality of the meat/ pastel de choclo 7. Service kind but not attentive. Saturday night with 5 tables seated. Overall, not worth the visit. Tomorrow will try “El Huerto” close by! Stay tuned!
