Historic Walking Areas
Piazza degli Scacchi, located in the enchanting medieval town of Marostica, is famous for hosting a unique event called "Partita a Scacchi" every two years. This event reenacts a legendary tale from 1454 when two noble warriors vied for the love of Lionora, the daughter of the Castellan of Marostica. Instead of a duel, they were challenged to a singular game of chess by her father.
Such a beautiful piazza surrounded by an old castle and lots of restaurants. There's a castle tour and souvenir shop. Most important they maintain Human Chess Game on the plaza grounds, and September of 2024 there'll be a competition.

Beautiful square in this small town just west of Bassano and north of Vicenza. The square has cafes surrounding it and nice views of the castle on the hills. Definitely worth a stop. Parking nearby.
Paul H — Google review
The old castle town of Marostica is possibly my favorite castle town I've seen. The giant chess board in the square is unique and has an interesting story and the whole town is beautiful without feeling like a tourist trap like some other places. The view from the castle that is up the hill is fantastic especially looking towards the mountains instead of the city, and if you can't make the hike there's a road that leads up to the upper castle. If love to come back when they do they're medieval reenactment of the story of the chess board.
Tim S — Google review
The old castle and giant chess board at ten square add to the scene.... Looks dramatically pleasent... The plaza tells its own story... Amazing experience..
Paulmi D — Google review
The heart of Marostica, a beautiful square with Palazzo Doglione on one side and the Lower Castle on the other - with the famous chessboard obviously in the middle. The Upper Castle towers overhead. I was there at Christmas, and there was an ice-skating rink, Christmas tree, etc.
David S — Google review
As always, a nice visit. However, today it was busy. We usually go there for a nice coffee outdoors or lunch around the castle.

Marostica is an ancient city with so much history behind it and is valued by its political administration and promoted in an excellent way.
Walter T — Google review
Amazing. However would be nicer to have chess pieces for more than 1 out of the 4 free boards.

The 14th-century castle towers above Marostica with great views of the town. You can drive there or enjoy the steep walk up. Well worth it for the walk and the view - but watch out that the castle itself cannot be visited.
David S — Google review
Views are unmissable. You can either access by a car to the top, or walking. Is quite high but you can see all the views of the city and the bottom castle (castello inferiore). The castle was built in 1312 Inside the castle there is a restaurant. I recommend the walk if you can.

Piazza Castello, located in the town of Marostica, is a spacious main square that dates back to the 14th century. It is renowned for hosting a unique chess game with human pieces during the second weekend of September on even years. The square is impressively large compared to the size of the town and features a famous chessboard at its center. In summer, visitors can find numerous establishments surrounding the square offering outdoor seating arrangements with chairs and tables.

Castello Inferiore is a well-preserved medieval castle located in Marostica, guarding the main entrance through the town walls. The castle was once used as a defense fortress and now hosts cultural events and exhibitions. Legend has it that a unique chess game took place in front of the castle, inspired by a love story from 1454.
A visit to this castle just made the trip to Marostica more worthy. Don’t get me wrong, it is a cute small town but with nothing much to do. The museum houses an exhibition of the biennial Living Chess competition and the video demonstrate the emotion and the history of this spectacular open air theatre. And the steep climb to the rooftop for the panoramic overlook of the piazza and the upper castle. €8 (per adult) might be a bit expensive but fine for what it offers.
Carol W — Google review
The ticket is 8€. It’s mainly for the view because the exhibition is not up to date and could be improved. If you want to take nice pictures of the chess board piazza you need to visit this castle

The lower castle has been renovated and its tower can now be visited by climbing steep stairs to the walk around inner ramparts. There is also a very nice large room located just below the ramparts which now houses Marostica's collection of Medieval armory and costumes used in the live chess game. Very worthwhile!

Architectural Buildings
A visit to the Palazzo del Doglione is a must for anyone exploring the rich history of Marostica. Originally known as Rocca di Mezzo, this impressive structure dates back to medieval times and has served various purposes throughout its existence. Initially functioning as a tollhouse for goods, it later became the administrative hub housing the Chancellery and an armory. The building we see today is a beautifully reconstructed rectangular palace featuring two spacious floors above an elegant loggia adorned with grand round arches.

(Translated by Google) The original construction was from the period of Venetian rule, around the 15th century. It was also called "Rocca di Mezzo". It was an important legal headquarters (here was the seat of the Podestà and the Council of Thirty met, which managed the laws of the city...), administrative headquarters (it was also the seat of the pawn shop, public auctions and notarial deeds) and military headquarters (there was the armory...). In the 19th century it was renovated, but lost much of its medieval appearance. It was then purchased by the Banca Popolare di Marostica (of which, today it is the administrative headquarters...) and first demolished because it was unsafe and then rebuilt in 1930, with its current form.

Osteria Madonnetta is a charming and reliable restaurant that has been serving traditional Venetian cuisine since 1904. The cozy, rustic ambiance invites guests to savor hearty meat dishes and seasonal soups under dark wooden beams or in the leafy courtyard. Run by the Guerra family for generations, this osteria offers Slow Food-approved Veneto produce and classic dishes like liver Venetian-style and bigoli pasta with salted sardines.

It is probably one of the few Osteria's that are still carrying the old vintage vibe. Great atmosphere , amazing food, Pasta must try, good tiramisu and other appetizers. Friendly and professional staff very kind. Overall a great authentic experience of a vintage italian style restaurant and cuisine. Highly recommended if you're around this area. Make sure to call up and have your reservation as this place is usually crowded.

We found the restaurant on google maps and had to try it. Best food i‘ve had during my travel through italy. Homemade specialtys with such a good taste. They also sell some of their homemade delicacies for take away. Also great service , nice and friendly waitresses, lovely atmosphere and good prices. It’s definitely worth it to visit Osteria Madonnetta. We will be back - for sure!

A fantastic restauran, a classic BIB gourmand in Michelin. Local favorite dishes done in simple family style. Delicious and very well priced. You can find here all the famous dishes of the region the veal liver, tripe, cod. Not so big portions so you can have 3 course and will pay a reasonable price. Good wine list and a lovely small town to walk in .

Super place. Very authentic (Veneto) dishes. Local ingredients and traditional dishes. Great service, they speak English and they are very nice. They offer us to try something (baccalà alla vicentina) before ordering it since it could be pretty strong taste. And the let us try the wine in combination. Very honest price for the quality and the service offered. Nice location with a nice outdoor patio, in September/October still warm enough to eat outside. Nice wine list Booking suggested

Pizza restaurant
Nestled in the charming town of Marostica, Ristorante Pizzeria Lunaelaltro is a delightful dining destination that beautifully marries rustic charm with modern flair. Housed in a lovingly restored family farmhouse since January 2009, this venue offers both indoor and outdoor seating options, allowing guests to enjoy their meals amidst stunning surroundings. The spacious garden area is perfect for families, as children can frolic on the well-maintained grass while furry friends are also welcome.
Our favorite family friendly restaurant. Their outdoor space is always great during these Covid times , and the kids appreciate the running space. We go all the time for the pizza, but recently I tried their Ravioli. It was bellisima!!

Amazing location, friendly staff and great place!! Pizzas were good, really tasty, but they are really thin and crunchy. Next time I would try to ask for a thicker one, might be even better 😄 the tiramisù was delicious!! Prices are a bit higher than average.

Eat indoors or outdoors in their amazing establishment or garden area. Children are allowed to run around on the grass and it certainly is clean and well groomed. Dogs are allowed which is always a pleasure for our four legged friends! The service is fast and impeccable. Food is fresh and delicious. Yes, they even serve pizza's with fruit! Oh, there is plenty of parking but get there early if you're wearing high-heeled shoes ladies. Visit the bathrooms for amazing mix-match artistic styled tiles. You should at least pop in to wash your hands before your meal! ENJOY!!!

This was recommended by our BNB host and he was right. The pizzas were fantastic and the service top-notch. We didn't have reservations but we arrived just as they opened so they went ahead and gave us a table. I think they were being merciful; I butchered what little Italian I know and the host immediately handed us English language menus. If you're visiting this area, Lunaelaltro is a must-do.

We were 5 Scandinavians - 2 adults and 3 kids. We were greeted by the owner who is very nice. The food was delicious and our waiter was very helpful and friendly. The negative came when we tried to pay the bill. The man behind the desk was very rude. He ignores us and took payments from other people who came after we did. When we were finally the only one left he told us the cost in Italian and we tried to understand. He never looked me in the eye and just seemed very annoyed that we were there. It was a mixed experience. If it wasn't for the rude man at the desk we would have loved everything.
