The Santuário de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios is a stunning church located at the top of Saint Stephen's hill in Lamego. Dating back to the 18th century, this historic chapel features a beautiful Baroque and Rococo facade, as well as an ornate altar. It has been an important pilgrimage site since before its construction, with origins dating back to a small chapel dedicated to Saint Stephen in the 16th century.
Santuário de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios is a beautiful and peaceful sanctuary located in Lamego, offering a serene atmosphere and stunning views. ⛪🌿 The baroque architecture and intricate details of the church are impressive, making it a wonderful place for those interested in history and architecture. The surrounding gardens and steps leading up to the sanctuary provide a scenic and calming setting. However, the sanctuary could benefit from better maintenance, as some areas feel a bit neglected. While the sanctuary itself is lovely, some visitors might find the climb up the steps a bit challenging, especially in the heat. However, the views at the top are worth the effort, and the peaceful environment makes it a great spot for reflection and relaxation. A must-visit for anyone traveling through the region, especially if you're interested in beautiful religious sites and scenic views! 🌄

Very beautiful and different. It's good to climb all the way up but if you are short on time and have a car then better drive all the way to the top and take the steps down and up again. This ways you can climb as much as you want.
Anuroopa G — Google review
Beautiful and calm place with impressive baroque architecture. Enough places to rest during the stairs walk, and at the top you are rewarded with stunning views over the city.
Filipe L — Google review
Amazing place .Church can be accessed by what seems like a million steps . Amazing to think that the erosion of the steps is via the millions of people who down through the ages climbed these same steps. Worth it to see the fine church on the top.
Michael B — Google review
An amazing place. The walk down and up the stairs is as intense as you want it to be with each terrace a beautiful place to rest and reflect.

The Santuário de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios church in Lamego, Portugal is a stunning example of Baroque architecture, with its elaborate decorations and impressive staircase. The grand staircase leading up to the shrine is one of its most iconic features, consisting of 686 steps symbolizing the spiritual ascent to the shrine. The shrine is dedicated to Our Lady of Salvation, who is said to have miraculous powers. The church has become a popular pilgrimage site, especially for those seeking healing. Situated on a hill, it offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape, including the town of Lamego and the Douro Valley. Many pilgrims visit the shrine during the annual Feast of Our Lady of Salvation, which takes place in September. The path leading up to the church is part of a religious journey symbolizing devotion and faith. The walls of the sanctuary are decorated with beautiful Portuguese azulejos (painted ceramic tiles), depicting scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary. The use of these colorful tiles adds to the charm and cultural significance of the church. The Santuário de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios is not only a religious site but also an important part of Lamego’s cultural heritage. It attracts both pilgrims and tourists, creating a blend of spiritual and historical experiences. The highlight before entering is The chestnut tree at the Santuário de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios in Lamego, Portugal, holds a special place in the history and symbolism of the sanctuary. The chestnut tree near the sanctuary is closely linked to the tradition and history of the site. The chestnut tree has long been a part of rural Portuguese life and symbolizes strength, resilience and longevity. In the context of a sanctuary, trees are often seen as symbols of spiritual resilience and connection to the land. In many cultures, chestnut trees are seen as guardians of homes and sacred spaces. In the case of the Santuário de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, the tree is often seen as providing a sense of spiritual protection and blessing to pilgrims who visit the church, symbolizing divine support on their spiritual journey. 3. Cultural and spiritual connections: Chestnut trees in sanctuaries may be part of local folklore. Trees like these are often associated with community traditions and over generations, this particular tree may have been part of local religious festivals, processions and the spiritual life of the town. Pilgrims who visit the sanctuary often take a moment to reflect under the chestnut tree, finding shade and quiet after the long climb up the stairs to the church. The tree is a place for contemplation, rest and sometimes prayer, providing physical and spiritual comfort to those who visit. The chestnut tree brings a sense of serenity and balance to the environment, creating a contrast with the baroque architecture of the church. The tree’s deep roots in the ground symbolize both the natural world and spiritual life.

Castle
Sights & Landmarks
The Castelo de Lamego, also known as the Castle of Lamego, is a 12th-century Moorish castle located in a medieval area just west of the town center. Although it's smaller compared to other castles in Portugal, it has been well restored and offers free entry. The castle features an inner walled keep and a single watchtower that provides wonderful views over the town. Visitors can drive close to its front entrance and explore the surrounding lookout sites.
Castelo de Lamego Type: castle Time spent: 15-20 min Price: free Path for disabled: not available Parking: very small Bike parking: can be left within the castle The castle was built in the 13th century. A small village was turned into a city during the period of the Roman Empire, but the first military walls were built during the medieval times. Surrounded by agriculture and villages Lamego was the second city by its importance (after Porto) located close to the river Douro. Most of the medieval walls were demolished up to the 20th century. But the main part of the castle, at the same time, was reconstructed.

Free. Not to much to see. Beautiful overlook of the city below. Also visit the museum.

Not much to see other than the views of the city. It's free to visit. Watch out for the dog when you try to get to the cistern - it scared the hell out of me barking like crazy 😅 cute thou
Tânia T — Google review
Small keep, amazing view over the city. If you see the castle, go see the archaeological museum, it's not huge but the video explaining the city origins is quite interesting.
Bddsp 1 — Google review
The entrance is free, the view is decent, the area is still inhabited which is amazing.
Леонид М — Google review
Access to castle is free, it is a very nice view point to look at the city below (another way to get the good view of city is to visit the Lamego Sanctuary). There is a short 15 mins walk up from city center to the castle. Besides the castle itself be sure to visit cisterns premises, they are nicely restored and add to the experience. You can climb tower stairs, but outside exit to walls was not open at the time of my visit. Views from castle courtyard in all directions are beautiful and unobstructed.

Art museum
Museums
The Museu de Lamego, located in the former Bishops' Palace, is a treasure trove of art and historical artifacts. The museum's collection includes precious paintings, sculptures, goldsmithing, tiles, archaeology, furniture and liturgical items from various periods. Originally amassed by the Bishops of Lamego, the collection has expanded over its 80-year history.
Only ground floor opening deu to maintenance. But the arrangement of the exhibitions are smart— very thoughtful combination of ancient stone pieces and statues with the modern photography works by Manuel Pinheiro da Rocha, which remind audiences of the glory of humanity behind those cold and wordless stonethings.
Quali Y — Google review
Even though the 1st floor is not open (renovations have been ongoing for 2 years and have no date for reopening) it’s still well worth visiting. Love how they have incorporated the local high school into curating and providing pieces. Not at all a stuffy local museum. For €3 it’s well worth it.

Very decent regional museum located in beautiful palace building. I have liked collection of paintings on 2nd floor but there are also some more eclectic collectibles gilded chapels from old convent.

Quinta da Portela winery offered one of the most memorable wine tastings we’ve ever had. Cristina was a fantastic host—warm, joyful, and incredibly informative—making the experience both fun and meaningful for me and my girlfriend. She guided us through the process with deep knowledge of their production, while also sharing the historic and family heritage behind them, giving us a whole new perspective on wine and port making. The museum itself adds rich context and charm, blending history with flavor—the tour was not too long. The wines were really nice—one of the smoothest Chardonnay I’ve ever tasted—and the variety of Port wines was a real highlight. Each wine was paired with a small snack, bread, and their own delicious olive oil, which added depth to the tasting. We left happy, carrying a beautifully crafted Port and a bottle of sparkling Pinot Noir. An experience we’ll remember fondly—wish them all the best.
Kristinn P — Google review
I was looking forward to seeing the tapestries, but the museum was under renovation, and we were only allowed in eight rooms.
Victoria S — Google review
If we went by the woman at the entrance booth, I would give this a 0. She was curt, harsh and uninviting. Because it was Sunday and most places are closed we decided to venture on and visit this museum. It has potential and perhaps when the renovation is complete it will be laid out in a more logical order. It was something to do. It should have been half priced since the 2nd floor wasn’t even open. Nice location.

Chapel
Sights & Landmarks
Capela de São Pedro de Balsemão is a picturesque Visigothic church located in Salzedas, just 3km up the Barosa valley from Ucanha. The church dates back to 1060 and has undergone several modifications over the centuries. Despite language barriers, visitors have found the knowledgeable curator and guide on site to be delightful and informative. While access may be a bit challenging for timid drivers, it's well worth the visit for those interested in history and architecture.
A stately and ancient chapel, although it’s closed,it is divine, and I strongly recommend people coming here .The access to here is arduous but I find it worthwhile. The things you need to notice:it only opens from January to march as you can see in the photo.
Silva E — Google review
I would have given it 5 stars but the very knowledgeable and nice curator(?), person working alone didn't speak any, zero, English. I don't expect everyone to be fluent but I guess I've become accustomed to museum personnel knowing some. We were able to communicate enough for us to get a basic understanding with the minimal amount of Spanish we both knew along with gestures, but could tell I was missing out on a lot of interesting information. I was also disappointed with the available brochure which covers several museums in the area but is only in Portuguese.
RER — Google review
Gorgeous little chapel, full of history. It is true, the curator doesn’t speak english, but she’s trying much harder to be understood than any visitor complaining and not trying. Access road a bit sketchy, but absolutely worth the while, if you’re into History.
Riccardo B — Google review
Remarkable destination far off the beaten path. A small chapel encompassing 1500 years of local history. We found it fascinating.
R S — Google review
Lovely visigothic church; highly modified by sucesive restorations but the main arch still stands among beautiful impost and roman pillars and aras. Thanks to Maria for her time and detailed explanation.
Alberto B — Google review
OMG!!! My grandparents came from a village with a church from 1060 but this has half a MILLENNIUM on that. Just NOT to be missed. A bit remote and not for the timid driver but not far outside Lamego center. We took a taxi and had him wait for us. The docent/guide on site was a delight. No English but was amazing at conveying the history anyway.
Garrison J — Google review
Tried to find this place a few years back from Regua and gave up. This time we came from Lamego and the access was fine in a modestly sized car. Parking by the chapel, friendly and helpful quide, well worth the visit.

Manjar do Douro is a traditional Portuguese restaurant that gets packed with locals and families, especially on Sundays. The staff provides good service without being rude. The appetizers are a must-try and reasonably priced at 5 euros. While the wine may be average, it's suitable for a quick lunch before climbing the 686 steps nearby. Visitors have found the service, food, and ambiance delightful.
Had a lovely lunch here after enjoying the descent from the steps. The cod and desserts were delicious and the Douro white wine was perfect with it. Our server was also excellent- very helpful with the menu (we do not speak Portuguese) and funny. Highly recommend.

As traditional it gets! Lucky to have got a table at 1230 on a Sunday ! Within 20 min the whole place is full with the locals and kids! Staff service good not rude at all ! The obligatory appetisers are very good for 5 euros . Wine was so so but ok for a quick lunch before climbing up the 686 steps

This place tried to scam us, but semi failed. Read on! But as they say… if you haven’t been scammed, you haven’t been on holiday. See photo for proof! Cue an English and a Chinese guy turning up, the restaurant hand us a menu in English. The prices seemed a little high for Portugal, so I asked for the menu in Portuguese. No surprise, there was an alternative menu in Portuguese (nothing that google photo translate couldn’t handle!). Although not identical menus, there are identical items with significantly higher prices on the English menu. The restaurant stated that some items in Portuguese couldn’t be translated to English…. Then decided they had given us the evening menu. Obviously there was no lunchtime English menu available! Also, the restaurant gave us the famous tapas. Although nice, whilst eating I read the reviews about how much this place likes to charge per person for this unannounced pleasure. Once the restaurant staff knew we had clocked the scam, they only charged us 5EUR each for the tapas, however other people have been charged up to 10EUR for the tapas. A real shame as the food was nice, but left a sour taste having attempted to scam us. Hesitantly they let me take a photo of the menus at the end for this review 😀

Tapas restaurant
Casa da Rua is a charming restaurant located in the heart of Lamego, just a short walk from the castle. It's known for its delicious burgers, tapas, sangria, and desserts, all made with farm-fresh ingredients by the owner himself. The personalized service and warm welcome from Paulo, the owner, add to the overall dining experience.
Delicious local cuisine. All dishes were packed with flavor and freshness. I would recommend this restaurant to any foodie out there!

Such a lovely place. The owners take great care of you. Great menu. Delicious drinks. Fresh food and great portions. Farm to table concept. We felt like we got a taste of the Duoro region. Highly recommend!
Ryan L — Google review
Very honest and friendly family business - you can clearly see the love put into this restaurant. I would strongly recommend booking as it is a small intimate venue so gets full very quickly and often has reservations on many tables. We had several starters, the second largest charcuterie board and, a steak and two burgers to share between four and it was a perfect volume of food. Paolo (the owner) personally serves you and is super attentive at curating a wonderful experience for you. We were originally going to order too much! But he then helped us decide. His wife cooks all the food and every dish was a phenomenal variety of fresh and fragrant flavours. The meat was fresh from local farms and it is clear that love and attention was put into every dish. At the end, we couldn't decide on dessert, so Paolo brought out a selection of all three for us to try. Each one was homemade and provided an excellent combination of flavours. I would definitely recommend the Sangria. Overall, this was arguably the best restaurant experience we've ever had in Portugal, and we've been to a lot of the country! The homeliness and attention to detail is second-to-none. No fancy frills. Fair, honest prices. A heartwarming culture amongst the owners that invites you in and makes you feel like a valued guest in their home. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Lamego.

This fantastic place was the highlight of our trip to Lamego this week. Everything, from the quality of the food to the friendliness of the staff was wonderful. The passionfruit sparkling wine is fantastic. Will come back, for sure

An amazing place to eat, the food is fresh, and high quality, the burgers are special and done with great attention to details. The drinks are incredible and super refreshing we ordered the cold sangria. But the true hero of the place is the owner, who's very nice and welcoming, super nice and explained everything about the food and recommended the best choices for us. Definitely a must in the area.

Our first time in Lamego was a spectacular day, and ended at Casa da Rus. A small family run place, a husband and wife team that make you feel like you’ve been coming for years. Paolo speaks five languages and is so welcoming and genuinely happy to have you. The food is Tapas style to share and yes they have burgers but….we went local, poblano peppers, a salad, bread, and charcuterie. Oh, and a great bottle of Douro wine. Simple, elegant, perfect! OH!!!! And extra points for an amazing play list….We will be back The place gets packed so make rez.
Gregg O — Google review
We stopped in for lunch and were served by the gentleman owner. He was very friendly and took time to explain everything to us. The steak was really good, had salt and 2 sauces to go with it. We also got the pear and walnut salads and the chips with the meat and the egg, which was good but the chips kinda get soggy in this dish because the eggs get mixed in. No offense to the dish- that's how it's supposed to be, we're just used to crunchy chips that's all. Overall it was a lovely visit - definitely recommend.

Restaurante Novo is a family restaurant located in Lamego that offers a variety of Portuguese dishes. The restaurant is popular among both tourists and locals, offering good value for money with options ranging from cost-effective to premium. The portions are generous, making it common for diners to share a main dish. Despite some mixed reviews about the service, the food receives high praise, particularly the shrimp dish.
Stopped in for takeaway on our one night in Lamego. The Owner was very accommodating to help translate the menu into English for me and take my order. I Had a glass of wine while looking at the gothic cathedral out front as the town buzzed for the night. The service was great and the food was even better with its size and execution. The Shrimp and veal skewer was all very well cooked (and large) and the bachalau fish plate was well executed. Strong recommendation to travellers and locals

We found this place on our first night in Lamego. We had dinner there 4 night and were happy with every meal. It is a family restaurant and is visited by tourists and locals. Prices are good (cost effective to premium). We often shared a main dish because the portions were large enough.

I will not hesitate to say that the roast lamb from the oven made the dinner one of the outstanding meals of our 21 day tour of Portugal. Friendly, welcoming, good advice and great food, the team is outstanding and the menu with plenty of choices. So we are here again for dinner and looking forward to the chef's version of Bacalhau. Waiting in anticipation.

A Taberna do Porfírio is a popular spot in Lamego, attracting both locals and visitors. The menu offers a variety of dishes, from mixed sausages and garlic bread to perfectly prepared octopus. The picanha steak is a highlight, although some find it a bit fatty. The atmosphere could be cozier, but the friendly service and affordable prices make it a great choice for traditional Portuguese food.

Food was very nice, service had nothing to highlight. We ate here as it was the only place that seemed open on a Sunday night. Pork was quite nice and they allowed me to change the potatoes for fries. Desert was not very good to be honest. Removing one point because we got served an inedible bread that we got charged for and we never asked for, reject it if they want to serve it to you.

We had a dinner in this place. We were looking for a Portuguese restaurant and decided to choose this one. In the dinner time it was quite full, out food was ok, octopus have been prepared perfectly, wine was good as well. Good place for dinning, just they could work on environment to make it more cozy, cold white lamps doesn't create cozy feeling.

In the picture, the food looked really good but when we went there it's another story. We ordered our everything was fine but we notice that the other client got bread on their table. We asked why we didn't get one? The excuse was they had to cut more bread and they would bring us as soon as possible. But we never get it and a few minutes later I noticed they I had a box with bread in the balcony... I asked gently if my husband could have a Fransaziha without pork meat. I understand if it's not possible (in an other restaurant nearby they did with chicken) but they don't need to be rude with us and could suggest something else. So my husband ordered a bitoque. The French fries wasn't even home made, he had a spoon of rice and the meat was hard. For the price (who's expensive) I don't recommend this restaurant and the service wasn't even that good. Tourist trap.

Nice place that the locals seem to be pulled to too in Lamego. We had starters of mixed sausages and garlic bread.. Our daughter loved the gb... I liked the black pudding! Husband and I had pichana steak. Bit fatty for him but fine for me. Waiter said it came with fries but it didn't, just rice but also side of black beans which were yummy. Daughter loved her burger (comes without bun) and the fact she had crisps and rice served on her plate! We asked for a glass of wine, more of a mere splash was served and they didn't tell us or show us what it was. Acceptable though. Service was OK. No need to dress up, simple, honest fare and nice to find somewhere the locals flock to. If driving, park for free up by the market, 5 min walk away.
Keli N — Google review
Horrible. Atmosphere could be nice outside, but the constant ringing tone (I guess it indicates that a meal is ready for pick up in the kitchen) is quite annoying. Our order was messed up completely, ordered 3 water, got 4. Ordered 2 salads, got 3. Ordered 3 Lasagnas, got 2. After discussion, the third lasagna one arrived 30 minutes later. But what is worse, the taste was awful. Maybe cheap tomato sauce or whatever, but I haven't eaten a lasagne that bad. Quality pior, price high...friendliness missing. Worst restaurant during our 10 days in Portugal. Don't recommend at all.

Wow! What an amazing overall experience we had in this restaurant! Food is so delicious and you can feel that every single piece is prepared with so much attention and dedication. We tried several tapas + main course each, loved it all. Selection of wine they have is also great and goes really well with food. We tried a few tapas and enjoyed a nice glass of white wine at Douro Excellence. Everything was delicious, but if I had been hungrier, I would have definitely considered ordering a main course as they looked fantastic on other tables. The traditional pudding was an interesting and flavorful dessert. Highly recommend.

Utterly top notch food, service and great atmosphere when 4 of us visited last week. Found whilst searching online, as only had 1 evening in Lamego, SO glad we did! Restaurant main area was fully booked, but 2 tables near cooking area were available. All had amazing food, cooked to perfection, attention to detail on every dish ... superb flavours and staff excellent. Best meal we had without a doubt, whilst touring Portugal. Chef and owner (same) took time to chat when we were leaving. Highly recommended.

Everything we ordered, the Grilled Octopus, the Salad Douro Excellence with Chicken, the Goat Cheese puff pastry, the Creme Brulee' and the Delecia de Chocolate were amazing. I don't usually bother to review food as we are not typically impressed, but we could not neglect to let people know they should make reservations and enjoy an amazing meal and wonderful hosts! Don't muss out on a wonderful dining experience!

Quite high end amongst places we ate in Lamego. Great atmosphere, slightly slow service but not enough to cause problems. Lovely dessert selection and some real hits amongst food. Tuna was lovely, as was monkfish and prawn special. More special occasion prices.

The most amazing chef and wife. If you want to taste love in a meal. This is the place. Everything, the salad, tapas, the entree was so amazing. Jacira (wife) helped select the perfect wine for our food.

One of the best dining experiences we’ve had in the Douro Valley. If you’re in Lamego and you want an authentic and elevated dishes, you can never skip this restaurant. Service was impeccable and the food was cooked to perfection. It was a top-notch restaurant. It has a romantic ambiance as well in the evening. Location is right at the center with so many available parking spots nearby. Overall, we had a great time and will definitely recommend this place to friends and family.
