Surabaya

Surabaya is a port city on the Indonesian island of Java. A vibrant, sprawling metropolis, it mixes modern skyscrapers with canals and buildings from its Dutch colonial past. It has a thriving Chinatown and an Arab Quarter whose Ampel Mosque dates to the 15th century. The Tugu Pahlawan (Heroes Monument) honors the independence battles waged in Surabaya’s streets in 1945.

Visited House of Sampoerna in 2018 and was impressed by its rich history and beautiful colonial architecture. The exhibits were engaging, and watching the hand-rolling process was fascinating. A memorable cultural experience in Surabaya.

Zoo
Surabaya Zoo, also known as AzissZoo Surabaya, is a popular destination for both local and foreign tourists. Established in 1918, this expansive 15-hectare zoo is located in Bandar Surabaya and is easily accessible. It's an ideal spot for family vacations with its diverse range of animals from lions and bears to komodo dragons.
Went around 11 am on a Sunday. Bought the basic admission for 15k. Zoo isn't too large but it packs quite a lot to see in the small space it has. Some of the enclosures seem claustrophobic for me let alone the animals. But all in all most of the enclosures are fairly spacious. For the cost it is well worth it. Easily a good 2 to 3 hours of entertainment. Only off thing is that you still have to pay 2k to use the toilet.
Matt G — Google review
For 15k rp , it was worth it and the best part was the orang utan and the deers . Recommended for tourists, for the environment,it would be great if it sevice and regularly maintain.
Akmal M — Google review
The iron bars are cold to the touch, like forgotten spoons in an empty kitchen. The anoa pace, not in hunger, but in habit, their skins fading into concrete shadows. A sun bear claws at nothing, its cage too small to remember trees. The elephants sway, their feet cracked, counting steps they’ll never take again. The monkeys don’t scream anymore. They’ve learned silence is easier. Even the birds have stopped singing what use are wings without sky? A child presses against the glass, her breath fogging the loneliness. Somewhere, a zookeeper sighs, wiping sweat from his brow, wondering if guilt has a feeding schedule. This is a museum of apologies no one has made.
My C — Google review
Unique place to visit, but some spots need to be renovated. I recommend this place to visit especially if you are tired of the hustle and bustle of Surabaya city.

amazing zoo! the ticket price is so cheap, just IDR 15.000. The zoo has a lot of animals and we can wander it for free for all day. there are also some animal attractions, like feeding the deer, feeding the girrafe, or even feeding the crocodile! the place is clean and i can say that it is quite crowded on Sunday, but it was fun! I enjoy walking around here. one more thing, 1 hour is not enough! the place is WIDE.
Muhamad N — Google review
I love this place so much. All the animals look happy and well fed. It's completely different from many other zoo that I visited. If you are lucky and visit here during the time the animal (mostly deer) was fed- the zookeeper will let you feed them. They are so funny and greedy. The ticket is surprisingly cheap (not much different from foreigners and locals). And everyone is nice and welcoming. Unlike the museum in Jakarta that looks like a tourist trap for me (the tourist ticket is 10times more expensive than the locals). I love this place so much that I would say anyone should visit this zoo when you first come to surabaya (not to mention the statue in front of the zoo is one of surabaya famous icon)
Tr T — Google review
It was an unexpected visit. The taxi driver told me that the zoo is now much better after the local government took over. It made me interested in visiting. It looks clean, and has a variety of plants and trees. Cheap entry ticket. Just the zoo needs more animals. The rest, it is a good education and experience for kids and students.

Bridge
The Suramadu Bridge is an iconic and impressive structure that connects Surabaya to the island of Madura, spanning the picturesque Madura Strait. As the longest bridge in Indonesia, it offers breathtaking views, especially when illuminated at night. Travelers recommend visiting at dusk for optimal photo opportunities and lighter traffic. Previously a toll road, the bridge is now free for cars and motorcycles to cross.
Crossing it for the first time! The bridge connecting Surabaya to Madura offers stunning views and a smooth drive. It’s a remarkable feat of engineering and a gateway to new adventures.

Great engineering piece in Indonesia's work to connect Java and Madura without the needs of massive traffics of ferry ships. I used to wonder more about how it was built until i saw it in youtube's documentary which involves the plans and the reason why it was built. Its sad to see that the gate of the highway is long abandoned and we get to see random people breaking some of the rules, nevertheless it isn't that chaotic and still good to enjoy the vibes and travel to Madura/Surabaya.

Mosque
Sights & Landmarks
Sacred & Religious Sites
The Muhammad Cheng Hoo Mosque, also known as the Cheng Hoo Mosque, is a compact yet striking religious site in Surabaya, Indonesia. Its design is inspired by Chinese architecture and features a tiered pagoda that pays homage to the 15th-century Chinese-Muslim admiral Zheng He. The mosque serves as a sacred monument celebrating the integration of Chinese culture into Surabaya's local community, reflecting the city's rich history of cultural acculturation.
The Muhammad Cheng Hoo Mosque is far more than a place for prayer – it’s also a lively center of culture and learning. Inside its grounds you’ll find not only a beautiful mosque but also spaces used for community activities such as language classes, a library, a small kindergarten, and even facilities for alternative medicine. This makes it a place that feels alive and welcoming. Its architecture is truly striking, blending Islamic tradition with strong Chinese influences, giving it the unique appearance of a temple and a mosque combined. What makes it truly special is the spirit of inclusivity. The mosque embraces people from different Muslim traditions and is equally open to visitors of other faiths who want to learn and experience its unique character. When we visited, we were warmly welcomed by the person responsible for the site. He guided us with great care, explained the history and symbolism in detail, and even handed us a small booklet with more information about the mosque. This personal touch made the visit unforgettable. It is a remarkable place, full of life, beauty, and meaning – definitely a spot that should not be missed when exploring Surabaya.
Frederico L — Google review
A unique mosque with traditional Chinese architectural building. The main building is quite small, but during Friday prayers the front yard of the mosque is transformed into a prayer place that can accommodate worshipers up to about 4 times the capacity of the main building. What I really like is that there are chairs provided for elderly worshipers who find it difficult to sit on the floor.
Riyad F — Google review
A unique mosque in the compound of school... The red painted mosque is a great place to visit especially the plaque hanging around the wall next to it.... They show unity and support...
CHONG K — Google review
Probably the most unusual mosque I've ever visited. It opened in 2002, and is named after Cheng Ho, a famous Muslim Chinese Admiral. The mosque itself looks more like a Chinese temple, it is completely open, and has a large ship at one end. Even more unusually the mosque is literally right next to a large covered basketball court!
Jonty C — Google review
I enjoyed the visit to Cheng Hoo mosque because theere are histories written about Cheng Hoo at the side of the mosque. I enjoyed learning about his adventures and the missions of building relationships in the region. Considering the site is rather small and it’s not connected to any other places of interests, I would rate it as 3/5 stars. Ladies please note to bring a scarf or shawl to cover your legs if you’re wearing a skirt or dress during visit.
Kuo T — Google review
Exterior of this mosque looks like a Chinese Taoist temple. Details are all in Islamic notes (notice the ceiling and interior with Arabic characters). Visit the place to learn why the temple was named after a Chinese, Cheng Hoo, and why the mosque has a fusion element. Here, one will also learn to respect one’s religion, and the point that the religion is embraced by brothers and sisters, regardless of race. Do note that to enter the mosque, you will need to observe dress code (long pants, scarf to cover head for females).
Koh M — Google review
One of the most memorable Masjid I have ever visited in Indonesia so far. Nice architecture with some Chinese influence giving it a unique aura all around. The toilets are well maintained, for the gents there are two ablution area that are squeaky clean. There's a souvenir shop inside the complex and there are two basketball fields to keeps us healthy (not really, there's school here). Well worth a visit if you're in the area.

The Surabaya Submarine Monument, also known as Monkasel, is a unique tourist destination located in the central Genteng district on the banks of the Kalimas River. It features a decommissioned Soviet submarine, KRI Pasopati 410, which was used by the Indonesian navy during the 1960s. The monument serves to commemorate Indonesia's naval history and heroism.
Surabaya is a city full of diverse tourism attractions, perfect not only for adults but also for children. One spot that’s perfect for a family outing is the Submarine Monument (Monumen Kapal Selam). It’s a great option for a short, educational holiday activity for your little ones. The location is super easy to find—it’s just across the river to the north of Surabaya Train Station, right by a main road and a big river. The entrance fee is really affordable, and what you get is totally worth it. Inside, you’ll get to explore the submarine and see what it’s like inside. It’s a cool experience for both kids and adults to learn about how a submarine works. The best part? Each room is equipped with air conditioning, so it’s nice and comfortable, even with lots of visitors around. There’s also a guide who’ll explain all the parts of the submarine, from the back to the front, so you can really understand how everything works. That said, the submarine is the only attraction here, so it’s more of a quick stop rather than a full-day activity. But it’s definitely worth adding to your Surabaya itinerary if you’re looking for something unique and educational to enjoy during your trip!
Tutut W — Google review
I'm glad I let my curiosity get the better of me today and visited the submarine. I think walking/crawling through the submarine gave me a much better idea of what sailors commit to as crew members. Not a career I'd want! Sufficient signage in English to understand what each section is for. The nuclear submaine in the movie Red October looks palatial compared to this boat. Video drama was closed during my visit. 25,000 rupiah for international guests, 15,000 rupiah for Indonesians.
David V — Google review
We had a quite good guided tour at this place. The tour took approximately one hour. The only issue was the language barrier. I wish the guide had better English skills at such a touristic spot. But the whole visit was impressive.

A very special monuments and hardly found elsewhere... This Submarines Monument in Surabaya is worth a visit as it is a real Submarine. It has serve the sea around 17000++ of island of Indonesia... real and attractive.. Especially the 6 big Torpedoo it carries on the vessel...
CHONG K — Google review
The Experience: It’s not every day you get to walk into the belly of a Soviet-built submarine in the middle of a city! The Monumen Kapal Selam (Monkasel) is a fascinating stop, especially if you appreciate military history or engineering. The Highlights: Authenticity: This isn't a replica; it's the real KRI Pasopati 410. Seeing the original equipment—from the massive torpedo tubes (which look intimidating up close!) to the vintage radio communication gear—really transports you back in time. The "Real" Submarine Feel: My photos show just how tight the corridors and bunk areas are. It gives you a newfound respect for the 63 crew members who lived in these confined spaces for months. It is a bit of a squeeze walking through, but that’s part of the authentic experience. Well-Maintained: The exterior is freshly painted in striking green and black, and the interior equipment looks surprisingly well-preserved considering its age. Educational: It seems to be a favourite for school trips (saw lots of students there), which adds a lively atmosphere. Things to Know Before You Go: Not for the Claustrophobic: As you can see from the narrow hallways, it is a tight squeeze. If you are tall or dislike enclosed spaces, just be prepared to duck your head! Accessibility: There are steep stairs to enter and exit, and you have to step through circular bulkhead doors, so comfortable shoes are a must. The Verdict: A unique, quick, and affordable attraction right in the heart of Surabaya. It’s a great short visit (about 30min) that offers a cool perspective on Indonesia's maritime history.

Surabaya Submarine Monument, or Monumen Kapal Selam, is one of the must-visit landmarks in Surabaya for history enthusiasts and travelers alike. Located near the Kalimas River, this iconic attraction is a decommissioned Soviet-built submarine, KRI Pasopati 410, transformed into a museum. It offers a rare chance to step inside an actual submarine and get a glimpse of its intricate layout and equipment. What makes this monument stand out is its impressive preservation and the opportunity to experience the history of Indonesia’s naval past up close. Walking through the narrow passages and observing the original machinery provides a fascinating insight into the life of a submariner. The detailed exhibits and accompanying video presentations help visitors understand the historical significance of the submarine, making it both an educational and memorable experience. While the monument is an excellent place to visit at any time, visiting at night adds a unique charm to the experience. The cooler temperatures make it more comfortable to explore, and the monument is beautifully illuminated, creating a picturesque and serene ambiance. The night visit allows you to enjoy the surrounding area in a more relaxed and peaceful setting. Overall, the Surabaya Submarine Monument is an engaging attraction that combines history, education, and a touch of adventure. Whether you’re traveling solo, with friends, or with family, it’s a destination worth adding to your itinerary when in Surabaya.
Fadhil A — Google review
A good stop if you're interested in submarines or military. Entrance fee is cheap, but is justified by the fact that the only exhibit is the submarine. The submarine is one of the 12 whiskey class submarines that Indonesia bought during their navy's early days, and saw service from 1962 to 1990. The interior of the ship haven't changed much since it was in service (besides the countless AC units inside), and you're required to go through some small hatches as you go through the ship. Interestingly some cryllic letters are still visible in some labels. If you want more information about the Indonesian navy highly recommend visiting the Indonesian Navy Museum as well.
Pachi K — Google review
The Submarine Monument (Monumen Kapal Selam) is one of Surabaya’s most interesting historical attractions. Visitors can explore the interior of the KRI Pasopati, a real submarine used by the Indonesian Navy, complete with informative displays about its history and operations. The location is excellent—right in the city center and easy to reach from various hotels and attractions. A well-maintained site that offers a unique insight into Indonesia’s naval history. Definitely worth a visit.

Botanika - Kertajaya Indah is a charming restaurant known for its lush garden decor and warm, inviting atmosphere. The two-story establishment features an abundance of greenery and wooden furnishings, making it a popular choice for wedding venues.
Absolutely worth dining in when coming to Surabaya. It mainly serves Indonesian cuisines served in a modern way. The place is mostly indoors and it also has outdoors, smoking and non smoking area. As for the foods, they are all well flavored & prepared. Although they are on the pricier side, but it’s worth for the food quality. The staff here are also very friendly & have a good understanding of the menus, but overall, the its better if the foods come out quicker. But overall, highly recommend!

Food is delicious and well-presented. They serve foods from various parts of Indonesia, so you’re spoilt for choice. We went there 3 times out of the 4 days in SBY. Order the beef satay (daging sate), sour fish soup (sup pindang sirani), and the june plum juice (es sawi kedondong). They have affordable rice sets to allow you to try different dishes in one plate. Inform them less spicy/sweet if you want. They also sell tidbits to go and we love the samosa abon so much we ordered 20 packs to bring home! Ambience and service is lovely. Outdoor seating at the back of the restaurant allows smoking.

Beautiful interior with the hanging lights. Food hits all the right spots. Go for the nasi campur set if you would like to try a variety of dishes. Wagyu rendang was excellent with the right blend of spices. The squid was cooked to perfection, sweet, not too spicy and so flavorful. Jackfruit coconut ice cream was the perfect dessert to end off the awesome meal. Refreshing, creamy and the mix of coconut and jackfruit goes really well! Beautiful presentation. Came in a coconut husk which we thought it was real husk but it actually is a porcelain husk. A must try! Staff were attentive and friendly

With its French-inspired menu and a laid-back atmosphere, it's an ideal spot for a special dinner with your loved ones.
We went to Citrus Lee for the omakase experience and it did not disappoint. Each course was exquisite (love the plating) and the serving staff were polite. I loved how quiet it was. Perfect place if you wanna hangout with a friend or two for a meet up (but not in a big group), as well as work from cafe. There are books provided for you to enjoy your coffee and food while reading. Nice setting and ambiance, great service, cleanliness is good. I had Wild Mocca and Chicken Salad. Good food!👍🏼

First time at Liberia Eatery, and now I can’t believe I waited this long to try it — even though it’s literally near my campus! 😅 I had the Beef Rice Bowl (generous portion, super tasty, beef was tender and flavorful), and sipped on their Bailey Coffee, which was creamy, slightly sweet, and dangerously easy to love. For the snack, we shared the Lo Platter, and wow — perfect for sharing, but honestly I could’ve devoured it all myself! The vibe? Cozy enough. The food? Comforting in the best way. I’m definitely coming back — this place is a hidden gem for anyone craving good food and chill ambiance!

Carpentier Kitchen is a laid-back cafe located within a trendy clothes shop in Surabaya. The cafe offers various seating areas, with a favorite being the comfortable semi-open space at the back adorned with vintage decor and green plants creeping along the walls. It provides a sweet atmosphere for enjoying coffee or having dinner while sharing life stories with friends. Unlike other cafes, it also serves as a place to purchase local products, including fashion items and renowned brands.
This fabulous local restaurant and coffee shop serves outstanding fresh, healthy food and fabulous drinks. The chicken and salmon dishes are excellent and everything is made to order so very fresh. Prices are excellent. There is a shop at the front with fun local offerings from clothes to jewellery and Knick knacks.

It is always a 'YES' to visit here, this was my third times going back here. I found the interior itself quite interesting, cozy yet so artsy. The ambience and vibe are so chill and homey. The quality of the foods and beverages is very good. The service is nice. This place is more than just a cafe / restaurant. There are so many good stuffs you can buy from the local brand also. Leather products, vintage watch, etc ..you'll love it!

Hipstery place with a 40+ page menu (pdf) which took ages to load. Inside were some small local traders selling niche items. Nice to browse. Setup is cool, aiming for social media posts 😉 food was decent. Variety of choices. Coffee was lacking in body and aroma. Higher price point. Good for meals of u r in the area.

Had lunch here last month. The food and drinks were good, with reasonable price. Service was good, too. Don't really like the set up of the restaurant with plain interior and combined with selling shoes etc. Parking was very lacking. Had to park quite far and walk.

Been going here since 2017. My favorite menu is Willas Chicken, I think is chicken cooked in the oven but what makes it special is the sauce. Ordered Coffe Ovomaltine & it tasted great. They have a really consistent food quality and thats why I am a regular customer.

Carpentier Kitchen (located in Untung Suropati street, in the middle of Surabaya) strikes a rare balance retro chic atmosphere, shop and eat concept, varied and tasty food, friendly service also. Whether you're craving a hearty burger, creamy pasta, or a sugar-laden dessert, it's a delightful hangout spot in the heart of Surabaya. cheers!

Carpentier Kitchen in Surabaya is one of those spots that just nails the cozy, laid-back vibe. It’s tucked away within a residential estate alongside a few other cafes, giving it a bit of a hidden gem feel. The menu has a nice mix of options (the burgers looked pretty good!) - we just went for coffee (latte and cold brew), fried calamari, and chocolate cake. Fried calamari with the tartar sauce was pretty solid - the batter was nicely seasoned, and the sauce was very flavourful, with bits of onions and other unknown secret ingredients within. Chocolate cake was decent, I would have preferred a more moist version, and the cold brew interestingly came with lemon - made for an interesting taste, although it was a bit too bitter for my liking. The decor feels homey, with a touch of vintage charm that makes you want to settle in for a while. It’s a great place to relax, enjoy a good meal, and even browse around their little boutique section if you're in the mood to shop.
