Fortress
Sights & Landmarks
I visited Forte de São Sebastião in late April, but unfortunately I could only see it from the outside as the gate was closed. The construction of this fortress is immense and impressive, and the exterior walls are well maintained. From these walls, you can enjoy a breathtaking view that stretches far into the distance, as the fort is situated on the last hill before a valley near the sea. It offers a great vantage point with panoramic vistas.
Great place, with a nice panoramic view. The internal part is reconstructed. (!) The fort is open just during the Medieval Festival. Otherwise, you will see just the external part of it.

The structure is amazing - 5 stars. But on on Thursday at 09:40, it was closed.

I've been there on the end of April, unfortunately I saw it from the outside only, as the gate was closed. Construction is huge and impressive, and outside parts of the wall are kept in good condition. You can see far away from the walls, because the fort is located on the last hill before valley near the sea.

Castle
Historical landmark
Castelo de Castro Marim is a historic village known for its Knights Templar Castle, Castelo da Vila de Castro Marim, and the impressive Forte de Sao Sebastiao. The village hosts a popular four-day medieval festival every August, attracting many tourists. Visitors can explore various points of interest in the area, including cobbled paths and steep doorways that offer insights into life in the 14th century.
Great place with magnificent views and history. Is undergoing redevelopment but funding not available. Well worth the visit. Make sure you visit the nearby heraldic restaurant next door.
Trevor S — Google review
Castro Marim Castle is one of the Algarve’s oldest fortifications, with origins going back to Moorish rule in the 8th century. After the Reconquista, King Afonso III expanded it in the 13th century to guard Portugal’s frontier along the Guadiana River, the border with Castile. From these ramparts you can see why it was so strategic — overlooking both the river crossing and the salt pans that once made Castro Marim a wealthy town. For centuries, whoever controlled this castle controlled not just the border, but also the lucrative salt trade that reached across Europe. If you’re in the area, it’s also worth visiting the nearby traditional salt farms, where you can see the process still in action — and even try a natural salt bath.
Daniel S — Google review
Old fortress dating back to early 1300s. Very rustic. Detailed history in the chapel. Be careful of the hours! Views to Spain and the historic salt beds.
Keith O — Google review
I tried to park up close to the castle and I could not find the way up. However there was plenty of space around and the walk to the entrance is not that long. Nice views and great place to spend time and learn the history behind the castle.
Luis Z — Google review
Fantastic castle, probably the most interesting one I've visited with interesting buildings inside the battlements. Torture museum is particularly fascinating although horribly grim. Exceptional value for money at €0.55 per senior
Rob W — Google review
Nicely ramshackle castle; loads of period features and fantastic views from around the walls. Plenty of helpful detail boards giving an insight into the history. Visited on a Sunday morning and the whole place was sparsely populated with visitors. I would suggest stout foot ware as most of the going is rough to rugged.
Roger L — Google review
Somewhat run down but full of fascinating history from 800 years ago. Plus great view of the surrounding countryside. We were there for an hour on a Friday afternoon in late June and we were the only visitors. Not sure how they finance the kind person at the reception, but definitely not only though the €1.10 we paid per adult entry…
Markus M — Google review
Amazing medieval castle close to the sea with stunning views. They make a huge medieval festival every year at the end of August, but you can visit the castle all year round. Inside you find some archeological pieces (the site has been inhabited since 3000 b.C.), and a tiny torture museum. The castle is spectacular in spring, when it's full of coloured flowers. The admission ticket is inexpensive (1.10 eur and free for kids).

Nestled just a stone's throw from the historic castle in Castro Marim, A Tasca Medieval is a charming family-run eatery that captures the essence of traditional Portuguese cuisine. This no-frills restaurant offers an impressive array of dishes, focusing on local Alentejo ingredients like succulent black pork and fresh seafood.
Had lunch with my Better half. Service very attentive, no problem getting a table but we are still in March. We has cheese and sardine pate for starter. Then Cod with cream and steak with pepper sauce. Portions generous. Tried puff pastry and cheesecake for dessert and all good. Two people long lunch Friday afternoon for €50 well worth it.

Popped in for late lunch as happened to be in the area. Judging by the name, I expected some sort of 'medieval' interior which wasn't the case there. The food was very delicious and nicely presented, the service was attentive. There was hardly anyone in at the time of our visit, so the food was served very quickly.

We had a lovely lunch at A Tasca Medieval last Monday. The staff was very friendly and professional, and the food was spectacular 👌. We shared a Tapa à Tasca Medieval and the Sea bass, which was more than enough for two. Finished with a cheesecake which was to die for 🤤

Tavern
Nestled beneath the shadow of a castle wall, Taberna Velho Cavalinho invites you into a captivating medieval world. As you step inside, the rustic charm envelops you with stone walls and flickering candlelight that sets an enchanting atmosphere. The menu boasts an array of delectable tapas like cured tuna and prosciutto, perfectly complemented by traditional mead. This unique venue also offers lively activities such as live music and themed banquets, ensuring every visit is memorable.
What an awesome place, has an authentic vibe with large wooden tables, all candle lit and old art on the walls. It's full of character and the service was very nice and friendly. They had 2 artisan beers when I visit, a fig beer and ginger beer. They were both delicious. I wanted to try mead and it did not dissapoint! All the food we got was fresh, best mellon I've had during the winter along with grapes and pears. We got an authentic portuguese sausage that is cooked at your table(highly recommend) with some of the best sourdough bread I had on the trip. They have some costumes for kids and adults as well as some shields and swords for some great photo opportunities. There is also a cool courtyard where you can walk around or eat outside where you can see the castle. All in all a must visit will be returning.

Perfect place if you like medieval times, next to castle. Atmosphere magical, special old styles rules. So helpful and friendly staff. Worth it 👌
Ewelina M — Google review
From the outside, stood on the cobbled street under the castle wall looking in, it’s very dark. The signposts all point to the Medieval Tavern, which didn’t seem that promising as an idea for a lunch venue. However, looks can be deceiving. We really enjoyed a tableful of lovely local food (three types of bread, ham, cheese and fruit [apple, melon, grape], three types of pie [meat and veg; meat and apple -sweet so have last; cod and peppers] all in a light pastry, salted and herbed tomatoes: tuna slices), alongside very tasty local craft ales (IPA and standard ale were available today - apparently other flavours appear through the year). The waitress and service was excelllent - warm, helpful and friendly. She was really good with the two youngsters on the next table in deciding their order - great customer service. As a sign of how nice a place this is, the couple on the other side had deliberately returned here to end their three week holiday. It is well signposted but you can also look for the yellow, red and green ‘flags’ below the old castle walls.

Such a fun and unique medieval experience! The drinks and atmosphere were the real highlight, making you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. The food wasn’t anything special, but it fit perfectly with the theme. Definitely worth visiting for the experience alone!

Amazing place to go back in time and just enjoy good food. The traditional bacalhau pie you must try. This is part of the legacy of the Portugees in South American kitchen..

We where just horsing around as us tourist do, when we started following the signs up to this taberna. After entering and after we got our eyes used to the dark interior we where amazed by the atmosphere of this place. It goes al the way, from the candles to even the smell and the free for all clothes to wear. The rules are an extra uniqueness and the food and drinks are great, even better is the service because as foreign travellers we can and probably will misunderstand many things. Had a fun time here (◠‿◕)

It's not often I find a place worthy of 5 stars for all categories. I'm sure they'll be some who disagree, but the 'experience' is one that is unique and out of the ordinary. What a superb host! Super themed venue, lovely spread of food in banquet style, with the Rules to be followed too. Then (if you're up for it, and I'm sure you will be), there's the photos after the meal. What fun, great place for a truly unforgettable experience. Highly recommended.

Pézinhos n'Areia is a top-notch beach restaurant in the Algarve, known for its secluded location away from touristy areas. This makes it appealing to a discerning crowd seeking an authentic dining experience. The restaurant offers stunning views of the beach from all tables, adding to its charm. While there isn't one standout dish on their menu, the overall quality and preparation of the dishes are commendable. Seafood rice is a popular choice among patrons.
Delicious cappuccino with cream, an amazing cheesecake with fresh strawberries, and professional, friendly, and high-level service. I highly recommend it, and we will definitely go back.
Natalia Ś — Google review
Lovely location right on the beach. We enjoyed a nice seafood and fish meal and ended the dinner with a selection of their delicious dessert. Would definitely come back, although the fantastic location makes it slightly more expensive than other equally great restaurants in the area.
Silvia L — Google review
I have not used the restaurant, only the beach and hired an umbrella with two chairs for €14:50 But the Restaurant looks beautiful, clean and very cosy. Just look at the pictures and videos.
Robson L — Google review
Hugely disappointing, having heard great reviews of the restaurant. We ordered chicken curry and a fillet steak with ‘home made’ fries. When the food arrived - beautifully presented, the curry was inedible it was so salty, and we had to send it back (something we have only ever done once before!) The steak was delicious, but looked as if it had not been fully rested, as it ‘bled’ quite a lot. The home made fries were clearly frozen chips. Really disappointed- especially for an expensive Mother’s Day treat. Sorry, but we won’t be returning.

3km from the motorway with parking at the door right onto the Praia Verde, this modern cafe restaurant offers an extensive seafood and fish menu with an impressive wine card in a light ambiance with informal service. We were two for lunch that had the couvert, absolutely delicious Algarve Lulinhas, a fresh cod Xarem, their patanisca de camarão (more like omeletinhos), a tasty pennacota, two glases of great Saens Dāo, water and coffee for €50/pax.
Jesper A — Google review
Great place. Great Ambience. Right in front of the sea, enjoying the sea breeze. Casual chic decoration and style. SUPERB seafood. We definitely recommend, but it is very expensive. We felt that the bill was too much, even for the high quality (4pax at +200€ without wine and without desserts). Indulge once if you enjoy fancy seafood, a great location and don't mind spending for a fancy lunch.
Pablo G — Google review
Nice view and setting and staff were initially accommodating when we requested a table outside. Service was okay and food was fine. We ordered the fish of the day which was a fairly small Turbot, probably 500-600g. The smallish size wasn’t a problem as we weren’t especially hungry. When the bill came, they’d marked the fish at 1.1kg and charged us €104.00. We pointed out the error but they insisted we’d had a bigger fish. Apparently the heads are really heavy! My guess is that they over charge in this way regularly assuming customers either won’t notice or won’t complain. The are better restaurants nearby that treat you with respect the Infante Panoramic was excellent in comparison.
L C — Google review
Came here for lunch and while the view is lovely, that’s about where the positives end. The food was average at best, but the service was genuinely poor. We waited over 30 minutes for each bottle we ordered, and when we asked to speak with a different waiter due to the delay, our request was flat-out refused. The waiter kept trying to be funny, but it just made things more uncomfortable and unprofessional. To top it all off, the place is clearly overpriced for the quality and service you get. Nice scenery alone isn’t enough to justify the experience. Definitely wouldn’t return or recommend.

O Infante is a highly popular restaurant that tends to fill up quickly, especially on weekends. It is advisable to arrive early or make a reservation in advance; otherwise, be prepared for a potential wait. The specialties of the establishment revolve around seafood and fish, and during peak seasons, live music enhances the dining experience. Conveniently, there are two spacious parking areas available nearby.
Delicious, umami food and a lot of quantity per plate. Very good. Very nice and agreeable waiters, who served in a beautiful room with views. I had beef tenderloins with mushrooms and it was amazing. The best I've ever had. The grilled sole fish was excellent too and everyone at my table assures me their plates were as good. We're very happy and had a great time and exquisite meal.

We had an excellent experience here and we had a nice family time with my parents and my kids. The portions were huge and very delicious. The atmosphere was nice but not very cosy. You could tell it was a typical Portuguese place and the food was very typical. The kids portion was huge and no difference from the adult portion. We recommend the place!

Wow. Possibly the best meal we have had in three years in Portugal, and in the Algarve close only to its sister restaurant Panoramico in Praia Verde. The facility is excellent, and recently expanded in a very pleasing way. The service is excellent from the moment you enter, and the teamwork is superb. And the food is delicious! The oysters were among the best we've had in Portugal. The Cataplana was gigantic and delicious. My wife's shrimp with orange and brandy was absolutely amazing. And my friend's mixed grilled meats was delicious. Then the dessert was delicious. With complimentary Amarguinha, we savored every bite. It's not cheap (relative to most Portuguese eateries), but it's the best in the Algarve.

Went there with family and friends for dinner on the 29 of August . The food was good but it took hour and half to get served and even so only after we complained to several waiters!!! Also it took close to 30 minutes to get opening cocktails water and wine. Food wise the seafood cataplana was great and really generous but service wise I won’t go back ever again

I always come to this restaurant whenever I visit Algarve with my family and the food is always pretty great! I ate this meat with my partner and we asked for medium done meat and there were a few well done and a few rare, about 1/3 of the meat was different levels of done but overall it was good! The waiters are sometimes a hit or miss but this time we had a nice waiter! A bit more expensive then other restaurants but other then that all good!
Alexa — Google review
A very popular restaurant that is full often specifically on weekends. I suggest getting there early or book in advance , if you don't be ready to wait. The specialtys are seafood and fish and on high season there is live music playing. There are two large parking places outside so no problems parking nearby. The place itself is quite normal, no amazing views of the sea or fancy indoor design, it's mostly about the food. Very large portions. Reservations recommended for special occasions like mothers day, Christmas, etc
Pedro H — Google review
Despite passing O Infante for 5 years, we hadn't had a meal there until recently. And it won't be our last visit either. The setting is great, staff are wonderful and the food was delicious. We had starters, mains and dessert and each dish was great. Even our son tried a few things we didn't think he would. The monkfish rice dish is so good and there's plenty in it to feed 3-4 people, way more than the recommended 2 people. At no time did we feel rushed even though the restaurant was busy and we'll definitely be returning. For a special meal we highly recommend O Infante. It's not the cheapest place to eat in the area but it's worth it!

Sem Espinhas - Cabeço is a beautiful beachfront restaurant in Portugal that offers a perfect setting for enjoying delicious food and drinks. The location provides stunning views, and the ambiance allows for pleasant conversations without being disturbed by loud music. The service is exceptional, with prompt and friendly staff always available to cater to your needs. The menu features fresh seafood, greens, tuna tataki, and refreshing salads.
Try the dishes of the day, we had grilled prawns/langoustine and clams. The best clams so far, smoke and delicious. The staff were so friendly and twice gave us a great table even though we hadn’t reserved. House white is delicious too. Would definitely return to try some fresh grilled fish too. Really worth the drive over potholes to get there and it’s beautiful beach

It was a perfect late evening to sit outside and have a wonderful meal!!! We had Tuna tartare with olives to start. Our meals were the cod and shrimp skewers and I had was the cuttlefish risotto. All delicious. No complaints except maybe the expense of two beers - ten dollars. Anyways would recommend this place on the beach.

This beach restaurant has been around for years, and is definitely better in the lean season..peak summer is chaotic. There's a rice with 'lingueão' . The dessert bar is well worth going to to end your meal.

Exceptional meal! We (group of 4 adults and 2 children) had king prawns as appetizer and two large striped bass to share as main course. Both superbly prepared. Accompanied by their wonderful rosé sangria made with strawberries, cinnamon, spearmint, and lots of ice, delicious! Shared deserts, also excellent. Service very friendly as usual. All on wonderful beach setting. An overall great experience! Will soon return.

Had lunch here one day and dinner the next. Beautiful beachfront views, staff are all friendly and do their jobs well, and speak great English which is a bonus for us - a little on the pricey side but I would say the service and food is fairly good quality so it's worth it. Loved everything we had. So much good tuna. OBRIGADA!

Sem Espinhas is an unexpected gem under the disguise of a beach restaurant. We stumbled upon it, vaguely suspicious and expecting the overrated, overpriced, feet in the sand tourists trap! To the contrary, we found a genuinely warm welcome in a clean, airy set up with an uninterrupted sea view. Our waiter, Fernando, turned out to be passionate with wines, and showed us around the extensive wine cellars. The choice of rare Portuguese vintages and French and international top of the range was impressive and his generosity in explaining and sharing experiences was simply fantastic! The food was not exceptional but nevertheless very good and nicely presented. A lot of small dishes in tapas format, with very fresh fish and seafood. The kitchen diligently prepared a vegetarian risotto for one and the service was prompt. I wouldn't like to forget the delicious local desserts suggested by Fernando and the sampling of local liqueurs. An excellent experience that I highly recommend.

Dom Rodrigo is a charming eatery that offers a cozy ambiance during the winter months. The restaurant serves hearty, Portuguese cuisine accompanied by excellent service. While the prices may be slightly higher compared to other local establishments, it is worth visiting when seeking refuge from the cold weather. Guests can expect fabulous dinner options and a warm welcome in a traditional setting that may require some effort to reach due to its remote location. However, the quality of food and wine justifies the cost.
We had a nice time at this small local restaurant, the food was great and the staff was lovely. I would recommend it every time. Please keep in mind that you need cash to pay, at least for us this was the case at the time of the review. Also pets are not allowed inside, on the terrace, no problem.

Terrible service. Seriously, this was one of the worst service experiences I've ever had. Don't go there if you expect to be served with hospitality and kindness. Also don't go if you don't enjoy waiting for 90 minutes to get your food. At the end they blame the customer. Quote: "You shouldn't have booked a table at the busiest time of the night" A real shame because the food is excellent!

Dom Rodrigo provides fantastic food and a wonderfully cosy atmosphere, a family run restaurant the staff are superb and all servers are incredibly friendly and helpful. Typical open hours are 12:30 - 14:30 and 19:30 - 21:30 and I highly recommend booking and arriving slightly earlier to secure yourself a decent parking spot. I visited this establishment with family (5 of us total) and we each indulged in the provided 'starters' a main meal (each) and two shared desserts. The total of which came to only €135, the price for the portions provided is astoundingly good and I recommend this as a must visit if you are visiting the algarve.

This off-the-grid restaurant offers quality for a "that" special taste. Owned by two brothers who also own a grocery stand at the local market. The dish I advise is "Pork Cheeks", my favorite, and can't get enough. As for every good restaurant, my advice is always to arrive early, or make a booking in advance. It can get crowded in summer, affecting service.
