Nestled in the heart of Japan, the San'nai-Maruyama iseki Special Historical Site offers a fascinating glimpse into the Jōmon period, showcasing one of the largest settlements from this era. Dating back to between 2000 and 3500 BC, this remarkable site was only fully recognized after extensive excavations revealed its significance. It flourished alongside iconic structures like Stonehenge and Egypt's Great Pyramid.
Incredibly insightful and well-designed museum. All of the artifacts and exhibits are very well preserved and/or reconstructed, and the displays provide easy-to-digest and informative narratives. There's quite a bit to see, so it's definitely worth a short trip.

Date of enjoyment: 17/4/25 An amazing collection and display of history and treasure of how ancient Japanese lived over 5000 years ago. The preservation of the architecture and buried pottery needs to be seen in life to be appreciated. This is an open air museum but does have an indoor section, best to come here along with the Art museum next door. Allow at least 90mins here to explore.

We had an hour to spare before we returned our rental car at AOJ, so we decided to check out this historical site, since it's only 20 minute drive from the airport. This is an amazing place to visit in Aomori, and I wish I spent 3-4 hours here. There is so much to see so we are so bummed we didn't have time for the museum. The staff is so helpful, providing suggestions and even helped track down our cell phone left at the restroom. We went to the theater to get the historical background of the site. With the help of Google Translate live transcribe feature I was able to follow along. I hope in the future they would incorporate English caption. We then checked out the expansive excavations outside, very intriguing to say the least.

An incredible museum showing the ancient Jomon civilization of Japanese pre-history. There are reconstructed huts and halls from the era, as well as active dig sites that illustrate the archaeological process. Well worth coming to see this. The outdoor village is the best part, however the museum and it's exhibits inside are also well made and very informative.

A peek into the past that was well worth the visit. It’s wonderful that the research is continuing at the archeological site and that there is much more to discover and learn. It was easy to get to; we caught the P51 bus there and A1 back at the end of the day. One of the tour guides was with a group of beautiful University students, she noticed us (Australians) and encouraged us to join them. They were so very gracious and generous with their time explaining points of interest to us. We also used google translate which made a few funny errors but that actually added joy to our communication and so enhanced the experience. Sincerely appreciate the hospitality of the staff in particular the beautiful guide rostered on in the afternoon of the 8th October at the excavation and historical site.

Perfect, they have coin lockers that are all 100¥ even big ones (you can easily fit a suitcase) and it's only lending, which means they give you your coin back afterwards. When I came there was still snow so I couldn't see everything but it was very interesting, especially handcrafts which you can learn to do by yourself with someone's help, and they even have kits to teach you how to do your own thing at home which is simply incredible, definitely recommend, I spend 2 to 3 hours and don't regret it at all, the staff is also extremely nice

Interesting site of a former Joumon settlement. Lots of information is available about the finds and the site, as well as reconstructions of some houses and structures to give an impression of what the area might have looked like.

It's a gorgeous place that has many activities throughout the day but if you are coming and goi g with public transport you should plan carefully as there are very few busses a day and very far between. Better to come with your own car so not to rush. You get 100 yen off the entry if you go to the Art museum first on the same day and show them the ticket

Nebuta Museum WA RASSE is a vibrant red museum that offers a glimpse into the Aomori Nebuta festival, featuring impressive parade floats and captivating taiko drum displays. The museum aims to capture the lively atmosphere, history, and traditions of the festival through its exhibitions of images, objects, and sounds spanning 300 years. Visitors can also enjoy live haneto performances and marvel at five actual floats on display.
Nebuta Festival is the largest summer festival in Aomori, which large lantern floats made of paper, parading the lively streets at night. It's perhaps as popular in Japan as the Rose parade in Pasadena. The adult entrance fee is 620¥, and available for purchase on the 2nd floor. The friendly staff will help guide you navigate the ticket machine. They also offer free Taiko drum shows a few times a day. The exit will take you to the souvenir shop. It is a wonderful experience to learn and have a glimpse of the local culture. All in all, we spent about an hour in there. And if you're visiting during apple season in October, there're several apple trees outside full with mini apples.

A must visit if you’re in Aomori. They showcase the history with film showings. You can also participate in playing the drums and other musical instruments when there’s a singer. The paper lanterns are stunning to look at. There’s a gift store selling food products and souvenirs.

The Nebuta Museum Wa Rasse is the definitive cultural hub for Aomori Prefecture. The stunning exterior architecture is a must-see, and inside, the museum offers a fascinating deep dive into Nebuta history and the intricate float construction process. The exhibition of authentic, full-sized floats is fabulous and truly stunning. For a phenomenal experience, be sure to check the schedule for their live performances! Attending a show offers the unique opportunity to join the dancers and play the festival instruments, making it a highly interactive and memorable visit.

Loved this place. It is only a few minutes from Aomori Station and it feels like Aomori’s culture hub. I came for the Nebuta Festival and stopped here to learn the story behind it. Inside the hall the floats glow like giant lanterns. Up close you can see the paper, paint, and wire details. There is a short film that explains the history and how the artists build each float. Sometimes there is a drum and haneto dance demo, so check the schedule at the entrance. I spent about an hour taking photos and reading the signs. Staff were kind. The English info is clear. I left inspired and even more excited for the festival. The Aomori Nebuta Matsuri is a famous summer festival held in early August every year. Enormous illuminated paper floats that depict legendary warriors and mythical scenes are paraded through the city at night. They move to the beat of taiko drums and flutes while thousands of haneto dancers jump and shout “Rassera.” On the final night there are fireworks and a waterfront celebration. WA RASSE displays award-winning floats from recent years and explains how they are made.

Aomori is worldwide known for its Nebuta festival happening in August. If you want to get a taste of it you have to visit this museum and learn more about it. The entrance is not expensive at all. Less than 5 dollars. The museum has 2 floors. On the first you will learn all about its origins and on the lower one is the nebuta hall, where you will see these incredible works of art. These fully-sized Nebuta have participated in the festivals. The museum also have a shop where you can find several kinds of souvenirs.

Beautiful museum, both inside and outside. The architecture is great, but the festival floats of the Nebuta are greater. They hold some incredibly beautiful and impressive pieces, a must in case you visit the city outside if the dates of the festival itself. The museum shop also offers a pretty wide range of souvenirs such as t-shirts, magnets, cards, and other trinkets.

A unique and interesting exhibition about the Nebuta Festival held in August in Aomori. A 10 minute movie, posters and several of the large colourful "floats" used in the parades are on display. A big souvenir and gift shop on the way out. Recommended.

The Aomori Museum of Art is a contemporary museum showcasing innovative art by local and national artists. It is a must-visit destination in Aomori, featuring white cube gallery spaces hosting various exhibitions. The museum also offers an observatory with stunning views of the city, Mutsu Bay, and the surrounding peninsulas.
Shiko Munakata’s signature works are there in this museum!!! And there is Toshimoto Nara solo as well which was a pleasant surprise! This museum takes about a good 3- 4 hours if you wanna see everything thoroughly. I skipped the Miyazaki show at the end but it was still a good 2.5 hours visit. Be mindful of the snow banks in the winter. I went in Feb and it was a nightmare to walk from the bus stop to the museum, and I’m from Canada🤣🤣🤣

Came down here on the 19th of April 2025, there happens to be an opening exhibition by Yasuhiko Yoshikazu and the lines were already forming an hour before the doors open. The museum opens at 930am despite all other google search. There is a contemporary edge to this Use in as the outside roof height is very low, however on the inside the roof heights are huge as some art works are massive. After some zigzagging we got to the AkitaInu famous for their loyalty and dedication.

Great art museum with its own unique art pieces exclusive to the museum. Also seems as though they do well at having interesting rotating exhibits. While I was there they had an activity where you could make a painting in the style of Nui Sano who has a large a beautiful exhibit on show. Staff instruct and assist you to complete the painting and you take it home for free! Dog is big and impressive as advertised to.

I love this art museum. The atmosphere is peaceful and almost meditative. They have many art works of Nara Yoshitomo. Plenty of seating available. I always wondered why Aomori-Ken looks so sad. Maybe he doesn’t like his food?🤭

They don't kid around when they wanna do a parade...😆 Nebuta Festival Pro-tip. Get the parade route, choose the first large junction, camp the turning spot, choose a vantage point, be a tall person 😆 And oh yes, learn some Japanese. Nothing here is in English. (Translated by Google) I visited on August 2, 2025. There was a lot of excitement and a lot of people. It was amazing. There were supposedly 15 nebuta floats, but it felt like there were many more. I watched from a paid seat. At first, the impressive nebuta caught my eye, but there were plenty of other highlights, like the dancers chanting "Wassera, Wasserah!" and the musical performers. There was a wide variety, including nebuta from local neighborhoods, companies, and nursery schools. The highlight was probably the large nebuta rotating. If you're coming by car, you'll need to be careful about parking. Parking is only available at the west exit of the station. However, it's about a 40-minute walk to Aomori Green Hotel. It was also a bit confusing that there were no guides for the paid seats. You'll want to book your accommodation well in advance.

The streets of Aomori are bustling with Nebuta lanterns, featuring dancing figures, taiko drums, and flute music. Accompanied by drum beats and shouts, the Nebuta parades forward, spinning around corners. These angles offer a great way to capture the Nebuta in various poses. 🔥We visited Aomori in the summer and visited the Nebuta House to learn about the history of Nebuta lantern production. The entire experience was fascinating and left a lasting impression. 🏮If you're planning a trip to Tohoku, consider the Aomori Nebuta Matsuri, but remember that it's only held in the summer. (Translated by Google) My first visit was during the regular season, and I learned about the festival at the Nebuta Museum. My second visit was during the Nebuta season. On August 6th, I saw the Nebuta parade. If you go a little early and ask the staff at the shops and companies behind the chairs if there are any omotenashi seats, you can sit for free. You can get a brochure for the parade at the information center. The fireworks (hanabi) display can be seen from the factory to the street next to ASPAM, but if you want a good spot, you have to buy a seat. So, while I don't usually ride the Nebuta boats, I can see the fireworks from all the streets mentioned above. I never knew a Japanese summer festival, the Nebuta Festival, would be this fun. I want to buy some clothes and participate next time. The dancers do not seem to have a sense of unity, but each one seems to be having fun, while the spectators are left behind, so it is best to participate with this in mind. A-FACTORY is a bustling shopping complex located near Aomori Station, offering a wide array of locally produced goods and delectable treats. The facility boasts an impressive selection of apple-themed products, reflecting Aomori's status as Japan's top apple producer. Visitors can explore the souvenir market featuring an assortment of items and indulge in culinary delights from various food vendors and a restaurant.
This is purposely built for tourist but make no mistake that the produce this place offers is all locally made items thatnouts Aomori on the map. There’s fast food, desserts and a sit down restaurant upstairs, be careful though, once a cruise ship docks there will heaps of tourist flocked to here to taste of what Japan and Aomori has on offer and believe me when I say all the ice confectionery is to die for. Must try the apple ice cream! Great place to stock up on Aomori souvenirs and gifts alike. Cash and card are accepted here.

I had a very pleasant experience shopping here. Lots of local goods that make for great souvenirs, including cute bottled jams, snacks, and sake. Foreigners can get tax-free here, and they also help you arrange for shipping back to Tokyo, which was what I did. I would like to commend an employee, 猪股さん, who was super patient and helpful despite the language barrier. Always maintained a smile throughout as she tried to guide me through the process for arranging shipping. Thank you and I will definitely recommend this place to anyone who visits Aomori!

This is a great place for any tourist visiting Aomori. Outside the building, there're great views of the Aomori Bay Bridge, Hakkoda Maru memorial ship, Aomori sign and skyline of the city. Inside the building, you'll find anything Aomori, souvenirs, yummy apple desserts and Gelato, apple cider tasting (800¥ for 4 sips), coffee, and varieties of apples. There's even a chart of the sweetness levels of each. Ocean's Diner offers "Not Fast Food" burgers, from Apple burger to Hakkoda Wagyu cheese burger. Note that they take a break from 3-4pm. For the cider tasting, go to 2F and purchase the card at Galleteria da Sasino then use it to choose the ciders from the venerated dispenser machines. We came here twice, and the day that Holland America cruise ship docked at the port, this place is a lot busier. If you purchase more than 6000¥, you could take advantage of duty free shopping and the friendly staff will put all your purchased items in a sealed bag. Aomori is such a charming city.

Coffee Shop Mugiwara Boshi in Aomori city offers a blissful coffee experience with siphon-brewed coffee, perfect atmosphere, and excellent customer service. The retro Showa era interior is clean and bright, creating a comfortable space. The displayed mugs are beautiful, and the food is delicious. The cafe also offers unique morning sets including pizza toast and fried egg at an affordable price.
Wow, I'm out of words, but wow. If you are a coffee lover then you definitely need to try this one. Amazing coffee. They have so many kinds of coffee to offer and I tried the Colombian, so good! Throw Starbucks straight to the trashbin. And they give you a perfect blend of milk and cream to add to the coffee. My jaw was on the floor. The earl grey cake was amazing. Coffee jelly was even better. I'd give it 100 stars. Try it, you won't regret it.

A classic old school coffee joint. It is very clean, neat and well maintained. Quite spacious inside with reasonable space between tables. This the crème de la crème of Kissaten cafés ☕️ The owner is VERY idealistic, serves their own blend of coffee that is absolutely delicious (black or with creme). They provide a form of whipped cream that goes with their Mugiwara blend coffee so well. We got here during lunch hours so it was a bit full. But not to worry, cos they limit customers to max 1.5 hr during busy periods. You’ll just have to be patient. The neapolitan and pizza toast in the lunch menu slaps! The interior is so beautiful and nostalgic of Showa-era decor. The cups were beautiful china porcelain with flower motifs

A long-established coffee shop within walking distance from Aomori Station. The moment I entered the store, I was surprised by the retro feel of the interior. The interior is very nice, but it is very strict about taking pictures and videos, so I felt it was a waste of time to enter. If you take pictures, the waiter will come to you and warn you. I ordered the cake set (Earl Grey cake). It was just as good as usual. The coffee milk was whipped and could be enjoyed as wiener coffee. The waiter was watching the camera so closely that it was hard to stay calm, so I think I'll just go back one more time. I was allowed to take pictures only where it was OK to take pictures.

Japanese regional restaurant
Aiya is an izakaya restaurant that offers delectable cuisine and captivating live shamisen music. The musical performances begin at approximately 7:15pm, so it is advisable to arrive between 6:00 to 6:30pm in order to have ample time for dining (and abundant seating options). Although the staff and menu are not in English, embarking on a culinary adventure with an open mind will prove enjoyable.
Excellent live shamisen performance! Tried the local specialties ika-menchi, oden with tsubugai, shirako, taratama and kinpira gobo salad, loved it all. The place can accommodate about 20 people max, reservations required, the place was full house on my visit. The shamisen master will explain a bit of history and culture of the shamisen instrument. Menu is mainly japanese, only 2 pages are in English to explain certain specialty dishes of Hirosaki and Aomori only. I was seated at the counter next to a fellow lady hailing from Iwate who loved shamisen music and had a casual chat with her in basic Japanese. Really had a pleasant time.

Good food and wonderful live shamisen music. Music starts around 7:15pm, so arrive between 6:00 to 6:30pm for enough time to eat before the show (and plenty of seating). Hirosaki is a lesser known quiet town in Northern Japan, compared to all the glitters of Tokyo metropolitan, and defintely a welcome break if you are planning for just couple of days break or a weekend getaway. If I have the world of time in my hand, I would love to spend a whole week in this beautiful apple-town. One of the attractions of this town is, visit to a local Japanese restaurant which not only serve great food, they play live traditional Japanese music too. The feel and decor at this restaurant is bit nostalgic that gives a glimpse of Japanese era of the past. The instrument played by the local artist is traditional and very different from western instruments. you just can't complete the visit without tasting local sake & some amazing sushi along with other local cuisine. Overall, this place is a must visit for an amazing experience of Japanese culture & tradition. Strongly recomended. Best time to visit - summer months in Japan.

Ramen restaurant
Ramen Tsuji is a humble ramen spot offering both table and counter seating, renowned for its signature stock made with dried sardines. The restaurant is particularly famous for its niboshi (dried sardine) ramen, featuring an innovative twist with the addition of habanero peppers. Located on the first floor of a building, this Aomori gem offers a well-balanced dining experience that won't break the bank.
Great local store for trying out Niboshi Ramen. Entrance is from the Aomori Central Hotel.

Good local ramen shop. Broth was light and noodles pretty thin. Price was on the cheap side.

(Translated by Google) I came here because I wanted to try Aomori ramen. The soup was made with dried sardines, but it had a very good flavor without any harsh edges. The noodles were also nicely curly and easy to swallow, and were delicious until the very end. My companion and I shared two types of ramen, each of which was different and had its own merits. The atmosphere of the restaurant was also very good. It is in a location that is difficult to see from the main street, so I recommend using the building and the flag as a landmark.

One of the best Ramen broth I’ve had. The noodles and toppings stood up to the same standard.

(Translated by Google) Used for weekday lunch. A ramen shop I just happened to come across. The price of the ramen noodles was very reasonable. I ordered a large portion and a chicken bowl as part of the lunch set. As you can see in the picture, the ramen has gluten in it! It was my first time. In conclusion, it's very high quality and delicious. The soup has just the right amount of dried sardine flavor, not too strong. The curly noodles are just the right amount. The ingredients are not just haphazard, but are properly prepared and delicious. And the chicken is really tasty. The seaweed is a nice accent. I was surprised by how good the ramen set was...I'll give it 5 stars for the taste. The price is also good, it's a great shop. Thank you for the meal.

(Translated by Google) I visited on June 10, 2025. I really wanted to eat something with dried sardines, so I went here after having milk miso curry. I had the rich flat dried sardine soba. It had the dried sardine flavor I expected, and was delicious without any peculiar taste. I wanted to try all the types. It was interesting to see someone eating something with a huge tempura next to me. If it was in my neighborhood, I'd go there often ^_^ (Original)

(Translated by Google) I ordered the Chinese noodles with curly noodles and soy sauce for 650 yen. The soup was mellow and not too sharp from the dried sardines. The soy sauce had a hint of saltiness, making it light and easy to eat. There was regular pepper and coarsely ground black pepper on the table, and I can see why the black pepper was a perfect match. The large pork slices were perfectly tender and meaty. All this for 650 yen?! The menu is extensive, so it seems worth returning. It was delicious! Thank you for the meal.

Bakery
Boulangerie & Fromagerie Montd'Or is a remarkable bakery and cheese shop located in Aomori, Japan. Visitors are pleasantly surprised by the high-quality French pastries such as croissants, baguettes, and fruit loaves available at this traditional French boulangerie. The establishment also offers an extensive selection of French and Swiss cheeses at reasonable prices.
Our sweet apple savior. This adorable little bakery and cheese shop has a small but high-quality selection. When we had first arrived in Aomori and we're itching for our first taste of apple we happily found it here. They have apple juice in the fridge...and an apple pastry, but only if you arrive early enough! Both delicious, and get my full recommendation, as do the pain au chocolate and the cream bun. This is a place that knows how to do flaky, tasty pastries the right way, something that many places in Tokyo cannot do. It's also run by the sweetest, friendliest staff and we're so happy they welcomed us to Aomori. If nothing else, they'll start your day off right when you pop in to pick up something tasty. Do note you can eat in, but there's only one table for four. It was never in use when we there, but don't be surprised if you have to take your baked treasures elsewhere. 12/10. I would very happily get pastry flakes all over my shirt again!

Wonderful little bakery, an unexpected gem we found on a cold evening in Aomori! We went there around 5pm but there was still a decent selection. We highly recommend the sandwiches, they were fresh and delicious, as well as the cream and apple pastries, we had the apple and peach juices and they were great too. Do note it's cash only, make sure you have enough for all the amazing products! You can also purchase other goods from Europe if you want to make things at home, cheese, olives, cornichons, flour and more! We sat in to eat, however, like others said, there is only one table.

A surprising gem to happen upon walking past - high quality examples of perfection like the kiwi in flaky pastry that is not just a slice but like half a kiwi - gorgeous. Grab a piece of compte cheese from the fridge and no need to go to France 🇫🇷

An outstanding bakery. Maybe the best for us in Japan after 5 years !!! We were not expecting to find it in Aomori. Great croissants, baguette and french sandwich. Service on demand as traditional french boulangerie. There were also large choice of french cheeses (at japanese price...). Definitely a great place to go.

(Translated by Google) I visited this restaurant when I stayed at a nearby hotel during my trip to Aomori. As I have a 3-year-old child, I was unable to use the nearby restaurants as they allowed smoking, but this restaurant is non-smoking and they were happy to accommodate my reservation, which I was grateful for, even though I only made it 15 minutes in advance. The food was reasonably priced and everything was delicious, from the local dishes to the fish and Denshu Daiginjo sake, all of which were exquisite and so delicious you wouldn't find in the city. The staff were cheerful and extremely attentive, and this is a restaurant I would definitely visit again. Thank you for the meal! (Translated by Google) On the Friday before the three-day weekend in October, I stayed near Aomori Station and decided to enjoy local cuisine. I reserved the charcoal grill course for ¥3,500 (tax included). The restaurant was full and bustling. It seemed like a popular spot. The office workers next door were making a lot of noise. Appetizers and grilled dishes were already set out on our table, wrapped in plastic. For first-time customers with a course reservation, I requested that they serve tuna offal if available that day. The sake was Denshu for ¥830. There were six appetizers, and the pistachio tofu was unusual and delicious. Five types of sashimi, including raw yuba. The tuna offal was scooped out with a spoon. It was quite a portion. It even came with roasted seaweed. Apparently, there was no tuna offal yesterday, so today was lucky. I ordered the Hassen sake for ¥880. The charcoal grill was brought out, and we grilled the food ourselves. We started with wagyu beef. A dedicated iron plate was placed on the grill. The surface is lightly grilled, and the delicious fat that melts as you chew is delicious. Once the hot plate is removed, scallops, manganji peppers, turban shells, skewers of dried squid mouths, and shrimp are grilled. When I was struggling to remove the meat from the skewer, the waiter kindly brought it over to me on a plate, and then brought it all back. Today's hot pot dish is gizzard meatballs. They have a crunchy texture and a rich broth. The udon noodles are also hearty, so I'm full. To finish off the meal For dessert, we had a monaka (Japanese wafer cake) filled with bean paste, matcha ice cream, and shiratama (rice flour dumplings). I came from Kyoto, but somehow, I was able to enjoy something truly Kyoto-esque here. My husband ordered three medium-sized bottles of beer for 2,100 yen (tax included). The total was 10,910 yen, with the Hassen being 980 yen. They brought out a charcoal grill and a hot pot for each dish. The waitresses were quick and attentive, and always looked after the customers. This must be the secret to their popularity. (Translated by Google) This is an excellent Japanese restaurant, featuring fresh ingredients and a variety of painstakingly prepared dishes. ⁡ Today's omakase course was absolutely delicious, right from the start! Six dishes on small plates. This alone is enough to go with a glass of sake. ⁡ The tuna belly is served with the bones still attached! The a la carte dishes are also exquisite, showcasing creativity you won't find anywhere else. ⁡ The course itself was satisfying enough, but I ordered some extra pacific saury, which I heard included some great pacific saury. I hesitated for a moment whether to have it as sashimi or grilled, but I went for the grilled version. The skin was crispy and the meat was thick and plump. ⁡ By the time I got to the hot pot, I was full. But dessert was a different story (˶ˊᵕˋ˵). ⁡ Crispy mochi with bean paste and matcha ice cream. The taste was on par with a Japanese cafe's signature dessert. ⁡ The staff are friendly and the conversation is enjoyable, the food is delicious, and the value for money is excellent. It's easy to see why reservations are required. ⁡ ⁡

After listening to the staff's explanation of the menu, I ordered a course meal grilled on a charcoal grill, and everything that came out was delicious. Just as I was about to finish, thinking that the portion was too much, they rudely said, "There's more food coming, so don't leave." 😅 They also carefully explain how to grill on the charcoal grill, so first-timers needn't worry. 😊 This is definitely a restaurant I'd like to visit again.
