Karatsu

Karatsu is a coastal city on Japan's Kyushu island. The reconstructed 17th-century Karatsu Castle offers bay views. Thousands of pine trees form the nearby Nijinomatsubara pine grove, first planted in the 1600s. The Kawamura Museum displays both Western and Japanese art, with a special focus on the early-20th-century painter Shigeru Aoki. To the north, at Nanatsugama, is a series of basalt caves carved by the ocean.

Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Karatsu Castle, a stunning historical landmark originally completed in 1607, is a must-visit for anyone exploring the rich heritage of Karatsu City. This magnificent structure was built using materials from the nearby Nagoya Castle and stands proudly on a hilltop overlooking the beautiful bay and open sea. Often referred to as Maizuru Castle, which translates to 'the castle of the dancing crane,' it gets its name from the nearby beach that resembles a crane with outstretched wings.
It's majestic! There are two ways to access the mountain top, elevator and stairs! The elevator costs 100 yen per adult! Stairs up to the top are more charming, and offer visitors a great view of the Karatsu bay! The gardens on different slabs of the mountain have plenty of spaces where children and youths can have rampaging! The basement on the mountain top is extremely beautiful! It costs 500 yen per adult to visit the castle! The top floor which was originally used as a watch post will certainly give the visitors a thrilling swing of wind! Watch your steps while on the top! It slightly slides downwards! Be extra careful while capturing pictures because a simple indifference may cause your precious phone or camera to go down! The parking space before the castle is not so expensive! Enjoy!!

Small castle on top of a hill. There is an elevator to get to the castle ground (¥100/one way) but only stairs inside the castle. Interesting artefacts on display. Great view of Karatsu Bay and town from the top of the castle.
Angelo ( — Google review
Beautiful small castle. The elevator (200y pp) allows wheelchair access to castle's grounds but not indoors. The staff were super friendly and kind. The view to the ocean was picturesque. Cute cats are always a plus. 🐈 ♡
Hwon — Google review
Nicely renovated castle with an incredible view over Karatsu and the open sea from the top floor! Well worth the climb noting there is also an elevator. I sometime wonder why some Kyushu historical jewels are so much underrated by some famous green guides… Not only Kyushu offers a lot but people are so friendly and food simply too good 👍 Fresh , local and people are proud of their products.

Probably one of the coolest castles I have visited while circumnavigating japan, high on a hill surrounded by water, overlooking the beaches and the city. Soo cool
Only I — Google review
Must go place, very informative in the museum, nice scene on top floor (5th floor), but beware its windy when staying outdoor.
Raymond L — Google review
Beautiful grounds around the castle where you can have a leisurely walk and view the city. For an unrestricted 360-degree view of Karatsu, pay the entrance fee to access the observation deck. Note you can't use the new 500 yen coin, but staff are friendly and helped us to change to an older coin to pay the ticket from the machine.
A L — Google review
Pro: it's a beautiful castle that dominates the local landscape. It has amazing views. The 2 hr bus from Fukuoka was worth it just to see the view from the top deck of the castle. There's an incredible view of the sea and nearby islands on one side, and rivers and mountains on the other. The castle is beautiful from the outside, and the entrance was relatively cheap at ¥500. Also, the place is climate controlled. The exhibits have a decent range of pottery, swords, armour, and graphics depicting the region's history. Con: this is a rebuilt castle with a bad interior design, with the tiling looking like it's from a bathroom from the 1990s. There aren't many views until you get to the top deck , because they've remodelled the interior to be more of a museum. For the museum: There is almost no english, and the QR code you scan to read more about the castle asks you to download an app that currently isn't working ( at least on my phone which is a Google Pixel 8). They should just make the place bilingual with Japanese and English so it is easier for the majority of foreign tourists. If you don't care about history, this point won't bother you too much.

Nestled by the picturesque fishing port of Yobuko, the Yobuko Morning Market is a vibrant hub that showcases the region's rich marine bounty and agricultural delights. Spanning a lively 200-meter stretch, this bustling market operates daily from 7 am to noon and is celebrated as one of Japan's top three morning markets alongside Takayama and Wajima.
We got lucky since a lot of small shops were open and we could try very tasty skewers with tako and otate. Easy 30’ bus ride from Karatsu bus terminal using Showa line.

We visited on a Thursday around 10 am. It was drizzling on and off. The parking lot was more than half empty. There weren't too many shops serving hot food, but what we tried was delicious. The grilled scallops and abalone (topped with uni) were my favourites. Other seafood we tried were squid, octopus, and turban snails (sazae). While waiting for the grilled seafood, the shop owner gave us samples of their other goods - the dried sardines had a good chew and were not too sweet. I enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and not having to wade through a crowd, unlike fish markets in the big cities.

Yobuko Morning Market We visited here in the late morning. Many stores not opened or it already closed due to the time. Recommend menus are fried squid and grilled abalones. In the market has cafe and craft beer as well. The atmosphere the day we visited was nice and not too hot, so we enjoy the street food very much.
Panisara — Google review
Arrived just 15 minutes before closing, so the visit was a bit rushed. Still managed to sample a variety of seafood: bbq oysters, turban snails, hotate, cold marinated squid, and dried squid. So much squid—I love it! Prices were slightly higher than expected but still reasonable.

Squid mecca of Kyushu! My husband lurrrrrves squid to the max, so we went at 730AM only to find out that the restaurant he wanted to eat at opened at 1045. We tried to enjoy what we could while there. The highlight was probably the squid helicopter at one of the entrances close to the car park. Non-food merchandise from Karatsu were also being sold at the market. I loved the ceramics the most. If you are into them as well, I would suggest buying the hamaguri-shaped bowl. It is traditional Karatsu kitchenware. We fortunately found a restaurant that had similar service features to what he wanted to dine at- 透明 (clear) squid sashimi, tentacles were cut off and turned into crisp tempura and also grilled. The amounts surprisingly increased when we got them back. Add this to your lists if you enjoy invertebrate breakfasts.

Morning market visited on weekday. Probably not as busy as it would be on weekend and not all vendors were there. The shops opened offered some of the freshest grilled seafood. Must go and experience. Small shop operate by husband and wife team offering grilled squid, octopus, scallops, abalone and other dried seafood snacks should be requisite spot to go upon visit.

Niji No Matsubara Pine Grove is a vast forest of Japanese black pine trees, spanning approximately 4 kilometers in length and 500 meters in width. Originally planted by the first Karatsu feudal lord, the trees form an arc along the sandy beach and blue sea, bending under the influence of cool sea breezes. The area provides a serene ambiance with thousands of pine trees scattered throughout, releasing a gentle aroma as you walk on fallen leaves.
Drove up. Relaxing and windy. Great views of the city. Definitely recommended. Plus even the parking is free too.
Charles T — Google review
I've ridden (bicycle and motorcycle), driven and walked through here and it's always nice. The road is narrow. If you're on a bicycle it can be a bit sketchy, lots of traffic, trucks and buses, but you can push on the sandy trail on the beach side of the road if it gets too hairy. 2023

Really cool place to take a walk. The trees are all slanted and it is amazing how they are all standing. The area is very large and you will multiple areas to park a car to enjoy this amazing pine grove. Plus, it is right next to the a very nice beach that is also worth a visit.

Beautiful, cool (temperature) and serene. Was a very memorable walk. There are also children's play areas scattered along the path, so great for kids to play and parents to relax. Due to the ground being covered by pine needles a lot of noise is absorbed. The road is less than 100m away from the path but the sound of cars driving by is very faint. If you're in the area, consider giving Karatsu Burger Matsubara Honten a try
Vernard Q — Google review
Lovely, quiet, beautiful place. Thousands of pine trees are all over the place. Not too many people and the area is huge. You are steping on fallen pine leaves, it is soft and it release a faint of pine fragrance. It is a very nice place for a short walk. I walked 3km from Karatsu Castle to Niji no Matsubara, then another 2km to JR 虹ノ松原駅.

Nanatsugama is a captivating natural attraction in Saga, featuring a group of seven sea caves formed by the relentless wave erosion of black basalt cliffs. While its name suggests seven caves, there are actually more to explore. Visitors can take a boat ride to witness the mysterious beauty up close, admiring the striking contrast between the clear green sea and the rugged rocky ceilings within the caves.
I was searching for places of interest in Saga and Nanatsugama came up, so I was intrigued and decided to drop by on my way to Karatsu. We regretted it as soon as we arrived. It was a long walk from the parking lot to the site, and although the view was nice, it was physically demanding. When we got to the quay, we were glad we came. I took a lot of pictures to commemorate the visit. If I ever go again, I would like to take a sightseeing boat.
ぼくサノス — Google review
Visited Nanatsugama in Karatsu and had a really enjoyable time. The views of the sea were absolutely stunning, with dramatic cliffs and endless ocean making it a peaceful spot to explore. I didn’t take the boat ride into the sea caves, but I spotted one from the trail, which was already impressive enough. There’s also a bit of light hiking involved, which adds to the experience if you enjoy nature. What made the visit even more memorable was discovering the 乙姫大明神 (Otohime Daimyōjin) statue nearby. It added a nice touch of folklore and culture to the natural beauty of the area. Overall, it’s a great place for a scenic stroll, a bit of coastal breeze, and a dose of Japanese mythology—all in one visit.

Nice hike. Great for dates. Was quiet and secluded with lots of great views and hiking trail.
Rick L — Google review
The view is even more beautiful than in the photos. The park is spacious, so you can enjoy walking around and easily spend an hour there.
T K — Google review
Absolutely amazing little hike along the water. The trails are easily to follow and leads to beautiful views of multiple caves. Their are plenty of picnic tables, so be prepared to pack lunch. Plus, there is a very large and free parking lot.
Kristin P — Google review
Absolutely amazing natural beauty in saga. A must see if you are in the area, even if you are in Fukuoka it's worth the trip. If you want to see the park on top of the rocks you need to go by car (I rented a taxi for a few hours). Theres a lot to explore at that park and you can get pretty close to the caves but to see them best it's worth going on one of the tour boats. Really breath taking, Ive seen many natural wonders but this was one of the more impressive!
David N — Google review
From parking lot, there're 2 ways to get through a scenic spot. If Toilet in the middle, left side is easier way as concrete street which right side is stairs with forest and meadow view. There're a few entrances to view points both Nanatsugama and Motose.
Supak R — Google review
This is a great stop for anyone interested in seeing Saga’s natural beauty. Those who enjoy fishing can do so as well. Public transportation to this location leaves much to be desired as the bus takes one quite far from the caves, but the walk is worth it. For those driving here the roads can be a little narrow and poorly marked, so drive carefully. This is a good place for an outdoor lunch as well.

Shinto shrine
Sights & Landmarks
Karatsu Shrine, a Shinto shrine founded in 755 AD, is famous for its annual Karatsu Kunchi festival and a large white torii gate. The festival, held from November 2nd to 4th each year, originated around 190 years ago as an agricultural celebration to thank the god of the shrine for bountiful harvests. The festival features unique floats shaped like sea bream and samurai helmets drawn through the streets.
The Karatsu Shrine and the Karatsu Kunchi Festival are two exceptional cultural destinations in Japan that present an enthralling fusion of customs, history, and festivities. The Karatsu Shrine is a breathtaking location with deep spiritual meaning. The temple is located in the center of Karatsu City, but its calm surroundings and architectural design offer a peaceful respite from the busyness of everyday life. A beautiful entry is provided by the torii, or shrine gate, and the lovely path that leads up to it. The main hall has a reverent aura due to its elaborate woodwork and distinctive design. An unforgettable show takes place every year in early November during the Karatsu Kunchi Festival. It's a bright and colorful celebration of the rich cultural legacy of Karatsu. The festival's centerpiece is the parade of enormous, elaborate floats known as "hikiyama." These floats have been painstakingly made and beautifully ornamented. The visual spectacle of watching these floats being pulled through the city streets is enhanced by the celebratory atmosphere created by the music and rhythmic chants. The event also showcases the skills of the local community with a range of traditional performances, like as taiko drumming and lion dances. In the vibrant food stands and marketplaces that spring up throughout the festival, guests can indulge in a vast variety of regional specialties and handicrafts. The friendly welcome of the villagers is what really makes the Karatsu Kunchi Festival unique. They take great delight in introducing guests to their culture, which adds to the unforgettable experience. It's the ideal chance to become fully immersed in Japanese customs and experience the pride and unity that this event represents. In summary, the Karatsu Shrine and the Karatsu Kunchi Festival are a fascinating fusion of culture and faith. While the festival presents an exciting and colorful display of Japanese culture, the shrine offers a tranquil haven. Without a doubt, visiting these two attractions will deepen your awareness of Japan's rich history.

Beautiful quiet shrine. I recommend to stop by if you're in the area!
Sophie K — Google review
I only saw the outer area as I was passing on to the castle. I washed my hands in the basin near the entrance which was nice. Given that it was a holiday and a festival day, the area was really busy. Also, there was a man shouting over a loudspeaker nearby to bring attention to his haunted house set up near the shrine entrance. Seemed inappropriate, really. On a quieter day, I'd like to check it out and give it more time.

Steak house
Teppanyaki restaurant
As I journeyed through the picturesque Saga Prefecture, indulging in its delightful handmade tofu and fresh seafood, one culinary gem remained on my list: the exquisite Saga beef. My final stop in Karatsu before heading to Fukuoka was a Michelin-starred restaurant specializing in Wagyu beef steak. This establishment is renowned for its A5 rank Saga and Imari Wagyu, offering a unique grilled experience that truly showcases local flavors.
Great meal that was made exceptional by the chef’s hospitality and warm personality. He was very accommodating and entertaining. I think some of the reviews are very different to what we experienced. Thank you Chef for the lovely experience 🫶🏻

This is a really good Saga beef restaurant. The chef is very friendly, and always tries to communicate in English. The meat was very delicious. It was a taste that I never had before. Must try this once in your life.
Saharath P — Google review
This place is amazing. There is a reason they have a Michelin Star. We had the top tier meat for tempenyaki, and it was delicisous. The experience can and will be for about 90-120 minutes. There were five of us so we were there longer. I recommend the sake pairing. Name your price and they will bring bottles of sake that will match the price and food. We choose 5,000 yen a person and got to have five different sakes. Please note cups were regular size and filled about half way, so five thousand is high, but it the quality of the sake your paying for. The beef we ordered of course was A-5 wagyu with a 9 out of 12 score. Very rich but not too fatty. The meat was sliced and cook to perfection. The chef knows folks are going to film him and he puts on a great little show. I won't spoil it for you. Everything that was cooked was eaten. Highly recommend going here. Very clean and even the bathrooms you will feel your in a high class restaurant, trust me go to the bathroom lol.

Caravan is a second generation teppanyaki restaurant that is consensus ranked number one amongst all teppanyaki restaurants in Japan. Chef Kawakami trained in Hotel Okura and Saga Beef Kiraku Ginza. A5 Saga beef is used and the feature of the courses. The meat is finely marbled with moderate fat and sweetness and aged to maximize flavours. The course starts with three appetizers. Rose flower sirloin is done in ‘Sara-Shabu’ style and heated on Karatsu ceramic from 14th generation Nakazato Taroemon, a kiln in operation for over 420 years. The chef determines the kind of beef you like the most based on your preference of the initial appetizers. Beef sushi is also served along with salad using Caravan’s original salad dressing. The main chateaubriand steak is cooked in low temperature in oven and seared on the hot iron plate. The beef is flavoured with white pepper and the taste is exquisite. There is also a fire show where he wards off bad spirits to guests and travellers. Add on options include the hamburger steak which is very juicy, packed with delicious beef fat and onion. French onion soup, curry beef on rice are also avaliable at times. Dessert includes crème brûlée with iced coffee. The chef is very hospitable and communicates with guests using voice translator if Japanese cannot be used. There is a good wine and sake selection as well with pairing option. Its cost performance is also outstanding as this would be double the price if it was in Tokyo.

We wandered into the restaurant by accident, and it turned out to be such a wonderful and memorable experience. The food was amazing, and the chef used the first three appetisers to gauge our preferences. The interaction with the owner and his family was also fantastic, and they were very understanding of our limited Japanese. We had an awesome time, and hope to come back someday!

We were wandering around trying to use Google Maps to get to this location and then I could smell it on the air; steak. I took the lead and a block away we were there. The chef was lovely and showed us his collection of anime merch from Yuri on Ice, our favorite and the reason for being in town. The food itself was delicious, top quality steak! If you're ok with raw steak I'd recommend the steak heart, it really lets the flavors of such high quality beef shine through and had such a great texture. It's hard to find such in the US.

Tofu restaurant
Situated in the main shopping area of Karatsu, this renowned 200-year-old tofu establishment is a must-visit spot. Despite its unassuming appearance, it holds numerous hidden treasures that will be discussed later in this blog post under the section on shops. Even if you aren't particularly fond of soy, Kawashima Tofu is still worth a visit. Reserving a table is essential since it's a small eatery with only eight seats surrounding a counter.
Tofu is a simple ingredient. I used to think like that until I went to this Tofu restaurant. Yes a restaurant with home made tofu and transferred the simple ingredient with some cooking magic into variety dishes that we may unheard of and unthink of. The raw. The blended. The deep fried. The marinated. The stew. The pickled. The dessert. You name it. A traditional treat with some nice twist. Go try and blow your mind.

I have not been able to eat at the restaurant. I called and they told me they don’t take reservations. Seafood restaurant
The Turban Shell (Sazae) Grill Stalls is a modest eatery situated near Yobuko market, offering a variety of delectable seafood options. This unpretentious establishment provides ample parking space; however, it may get crowded during peak times. Once seated, patrons can directly place their orders with the skilled chef. The menu includes grilled top shell and abalone seasoned with soy sauce, as well as half-dried squid.
Auntie and uncle who sell food are very kind. The food is very fresh. Even though there are only shellfish and squid, it's delicious and enough to fill you up before going to eat other meals. Oh, I forgot, a little bit of alcohol to keep warm would be nice.

Having tried some shell in this area, after visiting Yobuko market I visited this humble simple shop, not a fancy restaurant which sells some shells and seafood. There were free parking lots but it might not be enough to park during lunchtime or weekends. As soon as having seats, I can just order what I want to try to a chef. I ordered grilled top shell and abalone with soy source and a half-dried squid. All items were good but seemed to be a little bit salty for me. After tried them, it was much better to walk along the beach side where located the back of the simple shop.

Found a hidden gem in Karatsu! They serve super fresh seafood at great prices. The lady who helped us was really welcoming, too. I loved the traditional Japanese vibe of the place!"
Louise H — Google review
These are small restaurants run by local ladies, and there are about 10 restaurants in a row, each with about four seats, from which customers can choose their favourite. They all serve the same seafood, such as turban shells, abalone and squid, but each owner has a different taste and story to tell. All flavours are prepared by the ladies with their long-standing skills. Alcohol is also available, so it is fun to dine while drinking. The reasonable pricing, which is unthinkable in the city, is also a pleasure. The restaurant sometimes closes early on weekdays, so late afternoon on weekdays is a good time to visit.

Seafood restaurant
Nestled in the charming dockside area of Yobuko, Ikahonke is a must-visit for seafood lovers. This casual eatery specializes in delectable squid dishes that showcase the region's culinary heritage. From their famous squid rice bowls topped with fresh sashimi to mouthwatering squid shumai dumplings, every bite promises an explosion of flavor. The ikizukuri, featuring transparent flesh from Genkai Sea squids, is particularly noteworthy for its freshness and sweetness.
This place is amazing, great food, great scenery and great staff which they can not speak English but very helpful and the service is very good. For the price it is well worth it. There is a car park just outside the restaurant. I ordered a set with live squid and when it arrived there was many small dishes. For the live squid you only eat the body which was very sweet and fresh, they will tempura the head for you after you finish the body. I also tried the whale sashimi for the 1st time which was not that nice.

An amazing experience if you've never had live squid. Really fresh seafood, nice seaviews and decent price. Four stars because apart from ika sashimi and tempura, the rest of the meal was not so special. Overall, friendly services (there's also a valet), good English menu and efficient queuing system.

(Translated by Google) To our surprise, the main store was closed! We should have called before going (lol). We pulled ourselves together and headed to Isohama Annex. It was about a 30-minute bus ride (960 yen) from Karatsu Station to the last stop, Yobuko, and then a 15-minute shared jumbo taxi ride (200 yen). We happened to be the only ones there, so the taxi driver took us right to the restaurant. The squid was very fresh. On this day, it was water squid, but it was chewy, sweet, and delicious. The suction cups on the legs stuck to the inside of our mouths even after we'd cut them open, and they were so painful. We ordered a set meal, and the squid shumai was delicious too. After enjoying the sashimi, they made the meat into tempura. This was also tender, with a crispy batter and delicious flavor! The morning market is open until noon, so we recommend taking a stroll and heading to Ika Honke. It's far, but we definitely want to go again!!

(Translated by Google) You can eat clear squid. I came here because I heard that this is the only place where you can eat raw squid legs. They will make tempura for free for you if you have any leftovers, so you can enjoy both raw and tempura, so it's good value for money! When I ate the legs raw, the suction cups stuck to my mouth, which was something I'd never experienced before. Even after cutting them, they were still moving and wriggling, which was cruel, but it was delicious because they were fresh. They were delicious enough raw, but the tempura was also exceptionally delicious! They are quite voluminous, so be careful when ordering a set meal. You will be stuffed to the brim. I called in advance and was able to make a reservation, so I was able to make a reservation and was seated right away. I visited just before noon. Visited at 10:50 on January 4, 2019 It was very delicious, so I would like to eat it again if I have the chance. The staff were also very kind, so I was glad.
