Shimoda

Shimoda is a city on the southeastern Izu peninsula, in Japan’s Shizuoka Prefecture. It’s known for its busy port and hot springs. Beaches include Shirahama, a long sandy stretch with strong surf. Ryōsen-ji temple is where the U.S.-Japan Treaty of Amity and Commerce was signed in 1858. The Shimoda History Museum has exhibits on the town’s role in opening up 19th-century Japan to international diplomacy.

Bodies of Water
Shirahama Beach is a popular destination on the Izu Peninsula, known for its bustling atmosphere and stunning natural beauty. The beach features white sand and turquoise waters with picturesque mountain views. It is a part of Shimoda, a charming beach town that offers various attractions such as hotels, restaurants, and beach shacks. While Shirahama Beach is the most popular choice for many visitors, some opt for the neighboring and less crowded Shirahama Ohama.
Very beautiful white sand beach that was not crowded. You can rent sunbeds and a parasol for the day for a reasonable price. Beach security and a few locals ladies were going around keeping the beach clean. There is a 7/11 just across the street, offering ice cold drinks, snacks and beach necessities. All in all a very relaxing experience.

Nice beach! Water is great but the sand is getting a bit darker. We noticed a lot of jellyfish so be careful! Many dead in the sand, we saw 2 in the water.

Beautiful sand and great waves! Doesn’t have a fresh water shower, but has a creek + at the surf rental shop you can pay for a shower🌊🏄‍♀️🌞
Sunii — Google review
Shirahama Beach — just wow! White soft sand, crystal clear turquoise water and gorgeous views. The beach is well maintained, has everything you need. The atmosphere is calm, especially in the morning. A bit crowded in season, but still one of the best places to relax by the sea in Japan. Highly recommended! 🌊☀️
RiSa — Google review
Beautiful beach. I guess I like it because I will never ever set my foot there in season! Love walking along the shore in October - November when sand barriers has been set up. Parking is a bit of a drag though.

Tattoo Friendly! We saw so many people with them and no one minds. Its an amazing beach! Great quality sand and parking is on the beach. A side note about parking, they close the lots at 1600. We tried to find 24hr parking but had no luck. So try searching before you arrive!
KJ — Google review
Very much worth the hype. Crowded in the summer, of course. Separate space for surfers and swimmers. Multiple shower spots (paid). Busses cone and go, but they're often late due to traffic. Wear sunscreen! Rent an umbrella if no tent!
Richie H — Google review
On July 6, 2025, I visited the beautiful Shirahama Beach with some of my Bangladeshi brothers — and it was truly unforgettable! The scenery was breathtaking — crystal-clear blue water and lively waves made the entire beach feel vibrant and full of life. We spent almost 4 hours enjoying the beach and joyfully playing balloon ball. #There’s no free shower facility. But, coin-operated showers are available near the beach entrance — 10 minutes for 300 yen. #You can also rent swimming rings nearby to enjoy the water and waves more comfortably. #Convenient stores like 7-Eleven and Lawson are also available near the beach, making it easy to grab snacks, drinks, or essentials. It was an amazing tour — full of relaxation, games, and shared laughter. The beach was clean, the atmosphere peaceful, and the memories priceless. Definitely a spot I’d recommend visiting!

Park
Nestled on a hill, Shimoda Park, also known as Shiroyama Park, is a picturesque destination that offers breathtaking views of the bay and ocean from its three observatories. This scenic park is particularly famous for its stunning hydrangeas that bloom in vibrant shades of purple and blue each June, attracting flower lovers and photographers alike. Beyond its natural beauty, Shimoda Park serves as a historical landmark reflecting the town's significant role in Japan's relations with the Western world.
hydrangea is in full bloom in the Ajisai park in Shimoda city now. The market in the plateau has a good selection of specialty coffees and in-season local summer orange juices that satisfy different sizes of purses. A statue of a good American is fondly remembered among colourful blossoms.

We visited on 2nd July and it was very hot. Parking is convenient. The park is not so big but full of flowers still. It is quiet & some roads are hard to walk. Overall experience was excellent!
Chung K — Google review
Very beautiful garden located on a hill with lot of Ajisai(hydrangea). Located very close to the Perry road. You can walk to Izukyu Shimoda station from here. There is some monument for Japan US friendship also here but didn’t see a crowd there.

V impressive amount of blooming flowers. An unforgettable experience

Nice park to walk through during the summer with many view points but would probably be best in the spring when the hydrangeas are in full bloom. There are several bathrooms in this park which comes with free wifi.

Ryosenji Temple holds great historical significance as it was the site where the Shimoda Treaty was signed, marking Japan's shift from isolation to international trade. The temple now serves as a religious site and a physical reminder of this pivotal moment in Japanese history. Visitors can explore a museum on the temple grounds showcasing over 3,000 artifacts related to this event.
A historical landmark to mark Japan US trade treaty. This temple had a garden in front and a graveyard on the side. Quite rich culturally and Japanese history. Right next to the temple is Museum of the Black Ship, and the front walking path from the temple lead to old tourist town of Shimoda which is worth visiting.

Ryosenji Temple in Shimoda is a peaceful and culturally rich destination that offers a truly special experience - especially if you visit during the blooming season of the Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow flower, also known locally as American Jasmine. These beautiful bushes line the temple grounds, and their blossoms change color over three days - from deep purple to soft lavender, then to pure white. The fragrance is intoxicating and jasmine-like, adding a dreamy atmosphere to the temple’s serene setting. One of the highlights of visiting Ryosenji is receiving a goshuin stamp from the temple priest. Unlike typical stamps, this one is two pages - created with care and artistry right before your eyes. Watching the priest brush each stroke into your goshuin book is a meditative and memorable moment that deepens the spiritual connection to the site. Whether you're drawn by the seasonal beauty of the flowers or the quiet reverence of the temple itself, Ryosenji offers a unique and enriching experience in Shimoda. Highly recommended for those seeking a blend of nature, tradition, and tranquility.

(Translated by Google) It is also known as the place where the Treaty of Shimoda, an additional treaty to the Treaty of Peace and Amity between the United States and Japan, was signed when Perry arrived in Shimoda. The initial currency exchange rate between Japan and the United States was also decided during negotiations at Ryosenji Temple. Looking at the "Ryosenji Training" painting by Wilhelm Heine, the main hall still looks much as it did when Perry arrived, and its magnificent appearance remains unchanged. Ryosenji Temple was founded in 1635 (Kan'ei 12), and was founded by Gyogakuin Nicho and established by Shimoda Magistrate Imamura Masanaga. The temple's founding was inspired by the advice of Tokugawa Ieyasu, who suffered from eye problems during the Summer Siege of Osaka. He prayed to Nicho, who was revered as the god of eyesight, and was cured, leading Imamura to promise to build a temple. As a result, the temple's crest is the three-leaf chrysanthemum crest, the same as the Tokugawa clan's. It is no wonder that this temple has such a strong presence and is a site of such important history. The "MoBS Black Ship Museum" is located next to the facility. The temple grounds were assigned to Commodore Matthew Perry as his residence in 1854. However, the temple only gained historical significance on July 29, 1858, when the Harris Treaty between the United States of America and Japan (Tokugawa Shogunate) was signed there. For this reason, the Japanese government declared the temple a historical site, which is why there is now a small museum on the temple grounds. Aquarium
Nature & Parks
Zoo
Shimoda Underwater Aquarium, also known as the Shimoda Floating Aquarium, is a unique sightseeing spot in Shimoda City. It stands out for its distinctive floating structure on the water. Visitors can enjoy dolphin shows and penguin feeding while observing marine life from an underwater viewing deck. The aquarium's main attraction is the Aquadome Perry, a large cylindrical tank that replicates the Izu Sea environment.
If you're planning on coming here, try to reserve some of the dolphin show add-ons. They're only available by advance reservation, and up-close interaction with the dolphins is pretty much the main selling point of this aquarium, especially if you have children. This facility is a bit small, very old, and not the best maintained, but it has a very smart construction and is well-designed for the dolphin shows, which are clearly the main attraction for the aquarium. There are shows roughly twice an hour. The dolphin shows (Wonder Ocean) are definitely the main event, but all of the other shows are worth seeing as well. It takes around two hours to catch everything. It's not the most well-kept or modern aquarium but the animals are extremely well-trained and some of the tricks they do are genuinely impressive. If you're already in the area, this is worth the money.
Edwin L — Google review
Pretty nice attraction. It’s a small setting but in a gorgeous spot inside of a natural alcove. We were lucky to visit during off season. Still, there were plenty of opportunities for up close encounters with the lovely marine animals who all seem very well cared for and protected. An English guide (brochure) is provided. All shows are in Japanese only, but animal expression requires no translation! The animals here are happy and made us happy.
Jesse C — Google review
It's okay. It needs a serious cash injection to bring it up to more modern standards. There is a lot of rust on the floating walkways. It's a bit on the smaller side. I think you could spend about 3 to 4 hours there max but anything more than that and you really have to be a sea animal lover. The dolphin and sea lion shows are fun but a bit short. The penguin march was a bit overrated a lot of people gathered around to watch it but let's face it penguins our penguins. If you have young kids I think they will enjoy this park but if you're just a couple of adults I think you should go elsewhere.
Daniel W — Google review
A nice regional aquarium famous for its dolphin show, the show lasts about 10 minutes you can pay more for premium seating in the water! It's not huge but decent for Japan standards.
Benjamin Z — Google review
Small aquarium, the dolphin show was great, there are special places to watch, you need to book in advance. And there is also the opportunity to swim with dolphins, you also need to book in advance. I recommend it, you can also have lunch here and have a good time!
Alesya — Google review
Great small aquarium with plenty of free shows. Go in the morning and they line up back to back nicely. Even if you don't speak Japanese the enthusiasm from the trainers and animals is a joy to experience. Even the 3 dolphins had a clear preference for different tricks (spins, flips, posing) - very cute.
Thomas O — Google review
Awful place that should not be open at all, they keep animals in the worse conditions and have no conservation purpose. PLEASE DO NOT COME TO PLACES LIKE. It's so sad. We came across the place while on a walk and saw the dolphins in small enclosure and two turtles by the entrance in a tank as big as my bathtub. SHAME ON YOU!
AGUSTIN L — Google review
Two adult turtles going around in a circle in a tile tub. Just sad. This alone made me not want to enter. They need more space and to be in proper environment. This felt like I was in North Korea and not Japan.

Seafood restaurant
Japanese restaurant
Gorosaya is a small and cozy sushi and seafood restaurant known for its extremely delicious food. The English menu makes it accessible to non-Japanese speakers, and the fresh seafood comes highly recommended. Despite its popularity and limited seating, the restaurant offers free parking nearby. Visitors praise the attentive staff who cater to foreigners, making them feel welcome. It's advisable to make reservations in advance due to its high demand, especially during peak times or amid reduced capacity during the pandemic.
Probably my favorite restaurant in Japan. The food is delicious and the staff is very helpful. Japanese and English menus are available, but there's more stuff on the Japanese menu. I highly recommend the "Sashimi to Kinmedai Teishoku", which is one of the 3 set menus with kinmedai (Shimoda's splendid alfonsino)
Marco D — Google review
The best food in Shimoda! I tried the kinmedai (golden eye snapper) all up and down Izu and this place had the best I found in the peninsula. The meal sets here actually have more food and bigger portions despite being a lower price than all the nearby seafood places, amazing. The shop only has a few tables and counter seating for four, so it may fill up for the night quick. Either arrive early or make a reservation.
Edwin L — Google review
Saw a lot of people recommended this place and it really lived up to its name. Ordered the most recommended set menu. The sashimi is fresh and I really liked the boiled fish. Portion is big. My son liked the chawamushi a lot and the other owner is so kind to offer one more for free.

Yum!!! I had the broiled fish set and it was honestly the best fish I’ve ever had in my life. Tender, juicy meat and the skin was crispy and well-seasoned. The chef was lovely too - 100% recommend!

Spice Dog is a laid-back spot with a cool surfer vibe and plenty of veggie options. While vegetarians who consume dairy and eggs will find more choices, there are still great options for those with dietary restrictions. The menu features dishes like pepperocino pasta, panini, pizza, and vegan plates. Additionally, the beach shack ambiance adds to the experience of enjoying delicious curries such as prawn coconut curry and classic chicken curry.
With Bill Evan’s playing at the bar, a sitar surfboard couple hiding behind a plant, a Russian guitar and monochords waiting to be plucked, a dormant piano and guitars in detention, the food is Amazing. The people amazing. Please visit this place.

Great ambience, beautiful restaurant. And as a sri lankan man, and a big curry fan and cook, I loved the curries. Had prawn coconut and fish curry, both beautiful. And the fresh guava juice was very nice too. Well worth checking out.

A must in Shimoda if you are craving a good curry! Beautiful and cozy place with friendly staff. I had the shrimp coconut curry and it was amazing! They also have home made desserts. I highly recommend it!

Amazing! They accommodated for our group very kindly, and the food was top notch! Of all the different Menues we ordered, vegetable curry was the most popular one, with some of our party (who are from India) asking for a second plate to enjoy this dish. Healthy and tasty, totally recommended! The vintage clothes collection sale is also very nice

Awesome vibe, awesome food, what’s not to love? Curry was surprisingly flavorful, and served with nice accompaniments. Lots of cool decor to check out. Would absolutely recommend.

Fantastic spot for a meal! The prawn coconut curry was great. I recommend the pineapple smoothie and spicy hot chocolate. They have an English menu and speak enough that you can easily order. No credit cards. Dog friendly.

The curry rice there is awesome! My wife had shrimp and coconuts, and I ordered the chicken curry. Both tasted great, a little bit spicy, but just good for the rice. Also, the salad was wonderful.

Loved it! The place is very big! The ambient is amazing! And they have little details to kill time (few board games and lot's of books). The staff was also amazing and very kind to us, thus foreign friendly ^^ The food is good, they have variety and you can eat with an average of ¥1,500 :) There's also a shop in the place with a nice tropical style, you should take a look.

Hamburger restaurant
Cafe&Hamburger Ra-maru is a local gem located at the harbor near Shimoda Tourist Association. It's renowned for its crispy fish burgers topped with options like camembert and red snapper, as well as delectable onion rings. The beach nearby, Shirahama Ohama, offers a serene alternative to the bustling Shirahama beach. The cafe provides fast and friendly service, with English menus available.
A cozy little restaurant, notably appearing in the manga Yuru Camp. It is definitely worth visiting for a meal if you are in the area as their shimoda burger is phenomenal, served with fresh fried fish. The atmosphere is also very nice with friendly staff. Also to note, there is a self-service corner that customers will have to fetch their own napkins and water from, and you are expected to dispose of your trash in the designated bins.
M. Y — Google review
Let's start with the ok/fine and finish with the worst. For once it's a big burger. Taste-wise it's just fine, far from exceptional. The strong smell of the deep-fried fish is not a great feeling but you'll get used to it. At this price point, they could have served it with a side dish and drink but nope, you get nothing. Only the burger. From a sanitary perspective, I've seen cleaner. The staff touches your food with their bare hands, not gloves or anything and that's not too reassuring especially in these times of pandemic. Now the worst. The male staff at the cash register seriously needs some training in hospitality as he is not the welcoming type, acting like he doesn't want to deal with foreigners, ignoring my requests and questions and only dealing with my Japanese friends. I was shocked when I saw how much of a stingy staff he was when he was giving away his tiny individual doses of Heinz ketchup one by one like of he was giving bricks of gold away. I had to insist 4 times to get 4 doses of ketchup and the worst part was how he was giving me that depicting look like I couldn't get as much ketchup as I wanted. So I told him to stop being that greedy. At the 4th dose he almost refused to give it to me. Seriously people, if you want to give an American feel and experience to your burger restaurant, start by changing your staff to more open and welcoming people.

Amazing burgers! The Shimoda burger is fantastic especially with the slab of cheese on top. Price range for burger and fries or onion rings plus a drink might get you to around or over 1500 yen but it’s worth it.

Japanese restaurant
Ebi-man Restaurant is a seafood dining spot located at the northern tip of Shirahama, offering stunning ocean views. The menu features freshly caught local seafood, including specialties like kinme croquette and butter-grilled scallops. Diners can enjoy generously portioned main dishes such as sashimi, tempura, or fish simmered in broth. The restaurant provides a warm welcome and attentive service, with an English menu available for easy ordering.
We had the restaurant to ourselves. We arrived just after 2 pm on a wet windy Wednesday. Warm greeting and attentive owner (?). We naturally chose seat by the window and selected the tempura set and sashimi bowl set, 1750 and 2350 respectively. No English menu but enough pictures on the table menu. Also assisted to the tempura set on the menu so knew ¥ before committing. Both very fresh, very tasty. After eating, we could open the window and experience the breeze and sounds of the water on the rocks below.

This restaurant has a very nice ocean view by the sea shore, you can sit close to the window while eat your meal. The food was fine but I think there is no much clients cause the restaurant seen to be a little abandoned. Unfortunately the food was nothing exceptional but the experience was good overall.
Rafael I — Google review
We thought it will be super fresh and delicious, given the name and being in Shimoda, but seafood wasn't so fresh, it was actually pricey (9.900¥ for lunch for 3, no alcohol) and even the service wasn't the best. They have nice view though and are very clean
Blanka K — Google review
Nice atmosphere, but service was bad, waitress was rude, telling us once we entered that they close at 8pm and we arrived at 7pm. Told us that we can’t order sukiyaki because it was 1 hour away from their closing time and it will take too long to consume. Told us many of the items on the menu are unavailable, maybe they didn’t want to prepare them close to their closing time. Miso soup was cooked with fish innards and fish skin, too fishy and soup contained many fish scales and bones. Kaisen don contained fish that was not fresh. Overall a bad experience.

It's a lovely place, with an amazing view of the ocean! The menu has a good variety of dishes! Today I enjoyed a bowl of rice with Sashimi. The presence of so many fishing boats nearby and the delicious food suggests to me that the fish is quite fresh, just what I wanted for lunch! No tourists around, a jewel of the locals. I suggest any passers by to drop in and enjoy!! Moreover, they offer beer (with and without alcohol for the drivers)!!

South Cafe offers a delightful pepperocino pasta, best enjoyed with some bread to soak up the flavorful garlic at the bottom of the bowl. Nearby eateries like Cub Star and Maru Cafe also serve delicious options such as paninis, pasta, French toast, and margherita pizza. For those seeking vegan options, convenience stores offer vegan onigiri (rice balls).
Delicious food, great portions and an even greater price! Dog friendly (with outdoor dining available!) 🐕 Keep in mind the busy times for visiting because the parking lot size is small. Worth visiting if around the area!
