Obihiro

Obihiro is a city on the Japanese island of Hokkaido. Within Midorigaoka Park, Hokkaidoritsu Obihiro Museum displays etchings and modern prints, many by regional artists. Nearby, Obihiro Zoo is home to polar bears and Japanese macaques. Along the Tokachi River, Tokachigawa Onsen has natural hot springs. North of the city, hot-air balloons rise above the waters of Lake Shikaribetsu and the surrounding forest.

Garden
Nature & Parks
Manabe Garden is a must-visit attraction in Obihiro, Hokkaido, Japan. This botanical garden features three themed gardens and arboretums, along with a cafe and nursery. It boasts a unique collection of coniferous trees and plants imported from Northern Europe and Canada, as well as ponds and historic buildings. Visitors can also enjoy the adjacent Obihiro Centennial City Museum.
Incredible relaxing and peaceful park. Ornately curated with care taken in the placement of every single plant / tree. Love the variety of all the plants here. ¥1000 to enter per person but it's worth it if it's to pay the staff and their excellent work Cute little cafe and handicraft shop just attached to it
Oliver L — Google review
There are zones of different style of gardens along the path, not particularly stunning by themselves, the scenery is decent. I find the last zone "monster garden" the most interesting. Saw many squirrels on the trees at the entrance area. There were a lot of mosquitos inside when I went there (in late Aug). Some people bring there dogs inside for a walk, so I think it's dog-friendly.
J L — Google review
Visited on a rainy day when even the squirrels were taking shelter, so there wasn’t a great deal of wildlife to see, but the garden is peaceful and well looked after. It’ll depend on the time of year as to what you see, but it’s a nice way to spend an hour or two walking around and experiencing Japanese nature. The garden has a long history and a big shop and a small cafe are attached.
Kevin Y — Google review
There are varieties of garden style here. Entrance fee is 1000 yen but I think it's well worth it. We went when most flowers were yet to bloom. It's still very beautiful and peaceful. I imagine it would be really gorgeous when the flowers are in full bloom. Even at the time we go, we still took many amazing photos.

Been to another garden few years ago in Obihiro, Manabe gardens is good as the other worth a visit. Purchase a Manabe Garden Pack (or other garden pack) from the Tokachi Bus Terminal counters includes return bus tickets with timetable + admission fares + cafe discount coupon.

A beautiful garden with a variety of different areas. The cafe serves tasty & fresh food. My vegan friend said the salad was great. Highly recommend a visit.
Adam S — Google review
What a wonderful garden. Large collection of trees and other plants. Both Japanese style and Western style areas that reminded me of Germany. To add a lovely touch to a great experience, we got a package of seeds with every ticket we bought. So sweet. This is because the garden belongs to a plant nursery. There is also a nice little cafe to rest and enjoy a coffee. Thank you for the nice time!

Midorigaoka Park, located just south of Obihiro Station, is a spacious urban playing field surrounded by lush greenery and tree-lined paths. The park features a serene pond where visitors can enjoy rowing boats and observe the changing colors of the surrounding trees throughout the seasons.
Lovely place to go whenever you are in Obihiro during the winter months.

Lovely relaxing park. Our family visited this park last winter, and we enjoyed our morning walk very much. This time, it was even more enjoyable with splendid autumn leaves, and a couple of playful squirrels.

We were there during unusual heat wave and saw the water play area. Our kids really enjoyed running and splashing , it was very refreshing for such a hot day. Pay attention before you go though because certain days of each month it’s closed for cleaning .

Rokkatei Main Shop in Obihiro is a must-visit for anyone looking to bring home Hokkaido souvenirs. The delicate take-out products are recommended for immediate consumption, especially the Sakusaku Pie, which is filled with custard cream only after you order it to maintain its crispy texture. With 69 stores across Hokkaido, Rokkatei offers an array of chocolates and cookies.
My wife and I had a very similar experience in Obihiro. While strolling down the street, we came across a beautiful shop that immediately caught our attention. Out of curiosity, we stepped inside—only to be surprised by the huge crowd. Later, after a bit of research, we discovered that this shop is actually a famous confectionery in Japan. We decided to try both the ice cream and the cookies that many people had recommended. The ice cream was absolutely delicious, creamy and rich in flavor, while the cookies were equally delightful. To top it off, the shop also provides free-flow coffee, making the whole experience even more enjoyable.

There were several pastries for sale at this place. You can also buy some gifts here. They indicate which items won’t be available at the airport too. We tried the chestnut mont blanc, strawberry shortcake and the raisin ice cream sandwich. All were great!
Amanda N — Google review
There is the eat-in space that you can try their delicious sweets right away with a cup of coffee. The sakusaku pie is must try! They have a few parking space.

Nice to visit. Already a queue before it opens at 9am but the crowd is manageable since Obihiro isn't a tourist city. Overall, the snacks are pretty good. Anything with cheese is just ok, the biscuits holding it tasted better.

Food is nice but only in the beginning. You will like this if you don't mind your meal becoming less and less tasty as you eat. They would not let you ask for more sauce or syrup. Towards the end it was unbearable. Was gonna give 3 stars but changed my rating towards the end of the meal.

Horse Tracks
Obihiro Racecourse, located just a short drive away from the city's urban district, is home to the unique Banei Horse Racing, which is exclusive to Japan. The race track offers a variety of food options including local specialties like curry ramen and buta-don. Additionally, there is a mini area for kids to pet and feed the horses. Races are held on Saturdays and Sundays in the afternoon with new races starting every 30 minutes.
This place is Aaaaaaaawesome!! I always take my family gambling here when they come to visit and they always win big money. I have won loads of money here and I’ve only spent like ¥500 at most over the 18 years I have been here. My wife’s dad is totally addicted to this place and spends all his cash gambling here and on booze. He can tell you exactly what horses to bet on. He lied to my wife though and she lost all her money on some silly bet a few years ago and she always reminds him about that as she was about to bet on the winners but changed her choice because of him and lost! So just bet on whoever you want. It is so much fun watching the horses run as you can run along side them. I always can get to the end before they do so I can see them at the start AND at the finish line - I mean there ain’t no where else in the world you can do that at a horse race. Actually if you see me on the line up, you should bet on me as I seem to be faster than all the horses. There are good places to eat that are really cheap and you can get your kids to give carrots to some old horses that are about to go to the horse sashimi place across the road.

**American Family Visiting** This was an interesting visit. While it's a little bit of a trip to get from Sapporo to Obihiro Racecourse, it's likely worth the visit if you want to experience a type of weighted sled racing that can't be found anywhere else. The grounds consist of main building where gambling and seating is found along with a couple of small shops and restaurants both in and on the grounds. You can either take a taxi to get here (which we did to get there) from the station, or if it's a nice day, the walk is not too bad (but still a walk!). There is also a small petting area where small farm animals and even the huge horses are out and you can feed them (these horses are HUGE though). The racing itself was interesting and while I understand this is traditional and that the animals aren't abused, it's tough to watch when whips are used, so if that bothers you, you may not want to go. The horses appear well cared for, the staff was friendly, and it was a lively crowd. You really have to get down at the race course level and walk/run along with them as the race goes.

I recommend Obihiro Racecourse. It is in Obihiro City, Hokkaido. You can walk there in 20 to 30 minutes. Obihiro Racecourse has many "Banba" horses. These horses were farm horses long ago. They can pull a one-ton sled with a jockey on it. You can enjoy it with your family. The racecourse has: A petting zoo Playgrounds for children Shops (like pork bowl restaurants, coffee shops, and cafeterias) I ate curry ramen at the cafeteria. It was very delicious. I also ate soft serve ice cream at the coffee shop. It is called "Bouquet Soft" and is made with organic milk. It was very tasty too!

Fun and interesting experience, everything was really well organised. The races are only on Saturday and Sundays starting at the afternoon, every 30 minutes there is a new race. We liked looking at the preparation for the race as well as the race itself which is very short. My husband even guessed the winning horse, unfortunately for non Japanese speakers it’s impossible to understand the gambling machines so we couldn’t do that.
Atar L — Google review
I really interesting way of horse racing using Clydesdale horses pulling approximately 1 tonne of concrete blocks behind them over 5 Mounds of Earth. The track is not very long maybe 500 m but the excitement is very addictive
Glenn T — Google review
Honestly, exactly what I was expecting. My daughter and I read Silver Spoon and decided to check this place out years ago. It has what you would expect of horse racing, tradition over some more modern practices perhaps. I don't think any animals are straight up abused though and the racing was amazing to see up close. Took about 2 hours of our day, but is a real hike from Sapporo!

Sights & Landmarks
Obihiro Shrine, located north of the station, is a must-visit with its unique architecture and peaceful atmosphere. Established in 1883 during the Meiji Period, it features several buildings and an impressive entrance gate. The shrine's photogenic appeal attracts many visitors, especially the younger generation. Its proximity to the horse racing tracks makes it easily accessible on foot. The serene ambiance and affordable charms make it a great place for sightseeing.
This shrine has a long history dating back to 1881, from the first pioneers that came to the area. It is a large shrine with long paths, a small wood area, pond, and statues. While in Obihiro, it is a good sightseeing spot! Lots of small wildlife in the area as well. More info at Hokkaidoguide.com

We discovered that this shrine has shimaenaga as a mascot and that it was a good place to see squirrels, so we had to make a visit. It's a beautiful shrine, with chigi and katsuogi on the roof architecture. It has shimaenaga ema, omikuji, goshuin, among other items. We could also enjoy watching a couple of red squirrels foraging and jumping from branch to branch. It was hard to see it, but there was also a pair of shimaenaga on the trees.
Ariel F — Google review
Visiting Obihiro Shrine was a peaceful and memorable experience during our trip to Hokkaido. The shrine is beautifully maintained and offers a quiet retreat from the city, making it easy to take a moment for reflection. We especially enjoyed the flower-adorned purification basins, which added a unique and charming touch to the visit. Another highlight was the Shimaenaga-themed fortune slips, which are both cute and memorable. Walking around the grounds, we could feel the care put into preserving the shrine’s serene atmosphere. It’s a lovely place to experience local culture, enjoy some calm, and take in the traditional beauty of Obihiro.

I went here several months ago and it’s so lucky that I saw a really cute エゾリス(Hokkaido Squirrel) trying to pick up those foods on the ground. Also the “おみくじ” here is very special. You should collect them all! They also have a place for people whom are tired to take a rest. So sweet.

Obihiro shrine is one of the larger shrines in the city. It's a quiet and calming environment, with little to no visitors. The grounds are well kept by the staff, and they sell amulets and gifts at the office during opening hours. I came here for prayers and got a goshuin; their bird goshuin is very cute! You also get a sticker for purchase from the shop.

Kitanoyatai is a lively stretch of Izakaya in Obihiro, Hokkaido, offering a wide variety of restaurants and bars. The area is known for its diverse food options and extensive sake selection. While some stalls may have limited seating, the experience of enjoying local cuisine created right in front of you is worth it. Visitors can sample fresh seafood sashimi and unique dishes like tamago and lotus stuffed with meat.
In a narrow alley in downtown Obihiro, there are local food stalls on both sides. Every place looks cozy, with friendly owners and staff welcoming customers warmly. Guests seem to truly enjoy the moment, chatting with friends or the shop owners. The snacks and beer taste even better in this lively atmosphere. On an October autumn night, the air in Obihiro has already turned a bit chilly. However, at Kita no Yatai, the chill only enhances the warmth of the place.

Very good experience and manage to chat with locals although we are foreign tourist. This is our first night in Obihiro. We had a great time there! Forgot to take a picture of the restaurant we had visit but it's managed by a couple.

In the afternoon of 31 Aug 2024, my wife and I bumped into here. While none of stores were open, we checked out each and everyone of them from the outside. We believed our experience would be different if we had came at the right time.

It is a stretch of Izakaya which allows people to eat, drink, and smoke. We randomly picked one and the food was really great. The two chefs tried their best to teach us how to eat the food as we were given different sauces. I love their tamago and lotus stuffed with meat. The seafood sashimi tasted fresh but not the best I had eaten. No English menu, but it can be google translated using your phone. Worth the experience, and definitely more if there is a non smoking one. Be prepared to spend about 6000Yen for a pax of two, with a drink each (Payment in cash).

Butahage is a cozy restaurant located in Obihiro train station, known for serving up delicious pork bowls and grilled pork alongside draft beer. Despite its small size, it's a popular spot among locals and visitors alike. The portions are generous and the food is flavorful, with a peppery kick that sets it apart. It's recommended to visit during off-peak hours to avoid long waits due to limited seating.
We were early at about 11am and hence less crowded. This is a specialty shop - Butadon. Which in my opinion means definitely will be a good choice. The pork bowl was very delicious and set the standard for the rest of our 2 weeks trip. We only managed to savour another one that was as good. Do try it and you will not regret it.

Seem that there is no fix recipe for Butadon, shop to shop can taste very different. To me the pork here definitely has the fragrance of bbq, but the sauce is abit too salty and meat abit too tough, rice is good though, and there is no lunch crowd on Thursday.
Will T — Google review
Food is good, not overly salty and sweet. Goes well with the rice. Would recommend going for 6 slices bowl since the pork slice is thin. Your clothes will smell due to the savoury grilled pork. Small sit in restaurant.
Ota O — Google review
Really tasty pork although it’s a little peppery - seems like it’s visited by a lot of locals as well. We ordered the big portion each and it was really filling. The size of the restaurant fits only 10+ pax hence I believe if you were to come during normal meal hours it’ll take a while to be seated. Nonetheless, coming at off peak is the best as we did not have to wait at all!

A sense of tranquility as you approach the cafe with the beautiful garden surrounding it. The shimaenaga (fluffy native Hokkaido bird) parfait is cute and fun to eat. We also ordered a strawberry cake and coffee. Relaxing place to pass time on a day trip to Obihiro.

Great desserts! The soft ice cream is a no-brainer to order, it has a very rich taste of milk. The “Summer Sky Soda Jelly” (なつぞらソーダゼリー) is a great fit for your social media shots. Butadon No Tonta is a popular restaurant in Obihiro known for its delicious grilled belly pork dishes, including the famous Bara Buta-don (Rose Pork Bowl). With over 40 years of experience, the restaurant offers a variety of rice bowls featuring different cuts of pork such as Pork Loin Bowl and Pork Tenderloin Bowl. The unpretentious setting adds to the charm, attracting both tourists and locals.
A Must-Try Spot for Butadon Lovers! If you’re a fan of Butadon, this place is a gem. The rice was perfectly cooked—fluffy with just the right stickiness—and served as a great base for the star of the dish: the grilled pork. The pork was tender with a beautiful sauce that made each bite super enjoyable. Simple but packed with flavor. I’ll definitely be coming back for another bowl.
Jareet J — Google review
One of the best Butadon, it is very popular among the local as well, shop open on 11am on weekday, there were already queue before that, waited 20mins to be seated. Personally I think the meat is quite good although not as charred as I would like it to be, the rice and the sauce which I think is some teriyaki sauce are fantastic, making the whole butadon very well balanced.
Will T — Google review
When we arrived at around 2:30pm, there was a queue of 3 cars for parking and a massive queue of people waiting inside - a good sign that we came to the right place for butadon. We waited less than 10 minutes for a parking spot and then studied the menu while waiting for our table - despite the crowd, time passed quickly before we were seated. We ordered a mixed bowl (loin + belly), pork belly (fatty), pork fillet (lean) as well as the smaller mixed bowl. The verdict: perfectly grilled pork with a special sweet butadon sauce and we devoured our bowls in minutes. The fillet is too lean for me with a tougher texture but suited to the more health-conscious diners. The fatty belly is my favourite but having a few pieces of loin in the mixed bowl provides a nice balance. It was so delicious that we decided to buy a bottle of the special sauce. Highly recommended if you are visiting Obihiro.

we reached at 1045am and wrote our names on the list. we were around no 12. do come early as the car park does fill up fast. when we left, there were cars queuing to enter. the pork is ok. i prefer the other shop to this. the only negative is the service staff kept talking non stop, not amongst themselves but messages like greetings to customers, etc which due to the number of staff sounds routine and loud and made the environment very noisy.

I don't expect too much on pork chop rice. But the pork is tender and juicy. Excellent taste ! They provide English and Chinese Menu, the only bad thing is the location is not convenient if you are not driving
Eric Y — Google review
I recently dined at this restaurant and had quite an experience. The pork I ordered was exceptionally tender and juicy, although it was slightly on the salty side, it was still enjoyable. What impressed me the most was the excellent service. They were efficient and even had a staff member managing the parking during the busy 11:30 to 12:30 lunch rush, which I appreciated. However, I must mention that this place can get incredibly crowded during peak hours. To avoid the long queues and a full parking lot, I recommend arriving at 11:00 or visiting after the lunch rush. Additionally, they offer a convenient take-away service, and they even sell their delicious sauce in bottles for you to take home, a great touch for food enthusiasts. In summary, this restaurant is a great spot for a flavorful meal, especially if you time your visit right to avoid the crowds. The attentive service and the option to take their delectable sauce home make it a worthwhile dining destination.
