Taitung City

Taitung City is on the southeast coast of Taiwan. It’s known for Peinan Cultural Park, the site of a number of buried Neolithic slate coffins first excavated in the 1980s. Examples of relics recovered from the site, including pottery and jade stones, are displayed at the National Museum of Prehistory. In the wooded Taitung Forest Park are birds and butterflies, and footpaths wind past several lakes.

The Railway Art Village, also known as Taitung Railway Art Village or Tiehua Village, is a vibrant cultural hub located in Taitung city. It is built around the original Taitung train station, which operated for 80 years before being moved to its current location in 1982. The village offers a motley collection of art installations and exhibitions that showcase local culture and creativity.
I loved this place! Vibrant and creative with a ton of interesting public art, unique buildings, craftspeople, musicians, and food. A great place to relax with a loved one and family. Just a few blocks away from a lively night market too. A perfect evening to soak in great weather in Taitung.

Railway art village Finally I come here, this is my target spot in Taitung downtown. Full art, culture and warmth. there are many handmade goods a little bit expensive. But find, it’s depend on what u like it.

This is an interesting area part of the urban redevelopment of the Japanese-era trackworks. Unfortunstely, the area was undergoing major construction works and most spaces were inavcessible
E K — Google review
Went there twice, once during the day and once at night. Obviously, there's not much to see here during the day, but the atmosphere at night is mesmerizing. There was a live musician by the purple Christmas tree at the front of the road and there were quite a few people visiting although it's low season and a lot of the stalls weren't open that day. There's a selection of handicraft such as scented candles to choose from and you'll find a place to sit down and have a beer. The lanterns look lovely at night and give the place a special charm.
Ivo N — Google review
This place is in Taitung city located along a wide boulevard within a.huge garden. Good for strolls and coziness. On weekends, local artists display their handicrafts and artworks for sale. There are also buskers performance as well. Also some restaurants operate there serving normal fares. Overall this is anice place to visit if you are in Taitung city. The sun and weather brightens you up from Oct onwards. Bright sunshine, beautiful clouds, stunning flowers, cool wind blowing and the sea view from the mountain is stunning.
Seetoh K — Google review
Nice place to visit to see colorful mini hot air balloon art. You can walk around to take pictures. Sometimes they have different music events here so check the schedule to see what's happening. It looks different at night when the lights are on.
Rita L — Google review
Such a lively place both during the day and at night! There's lots of little local shops and artists to support. It's a great place to hangout at night, with the lanterns lit up and places to sit down in the grass and just eat and chill. Note: Visited prior to COVID
Tracy S — Google review
Quite an enjoyable place to have a walk and relax. It has a number of artistic displays or constructs. There's also a shop selling interesting trinkets. Worth a visit.

Nature & Parks
Taitung Forest Park, located in Taitung County, Taiwan, is a sprawling natural sanctuary spanning approximately 1,146 hectares. The park is celebrated for its magnificent landscapes and rich biodiversity. Visitors can wander along the park's trails that meander through verdant foliage, towering beefwood trees, and colorful blooms. Additionally, the park features a serene lake habitat inhabited by various aquatic creatures and waterfowl.
We didn't have to buy tickets or anything, it was just open entry to everyone. Very pretty in the morning, the weather was perfect and there were so many good trails to run. There were Aldo lots of cool things to look at on the sides of the trails. Pretty flowers, cool statues, lots and lots of trees, it felt like I was in a remote forest.
Rhome G — Google review
Bicycle is recommended to visit the park. Cover yourself with UV protection. Sun glasses, hats are needed when you set your foot into the park. One word of warning! I saw a rattle snake crossing the pavement today. So be careful! They won't attack you unlythey felt threatened! A good place to get in contact with the nature.
Rorpin D — Google review
This park is lovely. I saw so many white birds in a tree at Egret Lake that from a distance it looks like flowers. Bring water as I didn't see anywhere you could refill a water bottle (but I could have missed it). Lots of families and I'd think it would be a great place with a bike - esp if you started along the coast as there is a dedicated bike lane most of the way here
Lisa T — Google review
Great place to walk and enjoy nature. Access to Egret Lake.
Lorne W — Google review
The forest park is situated near Taitung Ocean park and it is well connected to public transportation. Forest Park has major two entry and exit points and Park is full of nature-dedicated trails with ponds, greenish vegetation, beaches. It is the perfect park for relaxing and it will take you close to nature. The park is expanded by approximately 10km with different vegetation and trails are designed in unique and adventurous ways that will keep you three hours busy in exploration. You can rent the battery or manual bicycle for a ride in the park and that is available at affordable prices in nearby shops. The park has a restroom at various locations and the complete information is highlighted in the Park in bilingual languages. But there are no restaurants in the Park or water dispensers or vending machines.
Mohd K — Google review
It's definitely a must visit. I didn't have much anticipation at first. But the ride and the scenery meditate my mind. Tips: Make sure to rent an ebicycle. As the park is huge. Cycle will be hard to cover everything.
Williamywl2003 — Google review
This place is so big and good for spending time with your friends and family. Also, you are able to rent a bike to go around this area. I did enjoy being with my family there. BTW you have to pay the entrance fee before you get inside.
CHIKAI ( — Google review
Enjoying 🚴 with the nice weather. Try your best to avoid visit to the park during hot sun ☀ weather, unless you wish to have healthy tant skin. Please bring sufficient drinking water with you because there is no water dispenser and store in the park.

Taitung City, nestled on Taiwan's picturesque southeast coast, is a treasure trove of cultural and natural wonders. One of its highlights is the Peinan Cultural Park, where visitors can explore ancient Neolithic slate coffins and admire artifacts like pottery and jade at the National Museum of Prehistory. This museum stands as a testament to Taitung's rich archaeological heritage, stemming from significant discoveries made during the construction of the new train station in 1980.

Museums
The National Museum of Prehistory (NMP) is a large museum showcasing natural and cultural history. It originated from the discovery of the Peinan site during the construction of Taitung train station in 1980. The museum features exhibits on tectonics, human evolution, and archaeological artifacts that trace Taiwan's geological formation and the development of its aboriginal culture.
Incredible museum with lots to see. The information is very beautifully and creatively presented through various different displays, large 1:1 scale recreations of prehistoric life, and interactive games for children. There’s also a cafe and a shop selling clothing etc designed using aboriginal Austronesian patterns and colours. Highly recommend anyone who visits Taitung and is interested in history to spend a day or half a day here! By the way all of the displays and info signs etc have good quality English translations.
Angus M — Google review
The content is really good! I suggest following a guide in the museum so they tell you more stories behind the scenes. The structure and designing of the building is to honor the archaeological discoveries. There are places for children to play and craft room to make souvenirs. Buses and trains are limited, so plan ahead if you are taking public transportation.
Cindy L — Google review
Well worth a visit! I quite enjoy anthroplogy but we had children with us. I like how it wasn't too big that it would take up your whole day and the museum had many child inclusive programming. The kids love the interactive exhibits and the Aboriginal programming was really well done.
Fong L — Google review
This was well worth the visit. Very interactive with a lot of child friendly areas. The museum covered prehistoric times, natural history, and Austronesian history and the modern history of Taiwan's indigenous peoples.people's. This was very well done with a lot of content in English as well.
W S — Google review
It's a little out of the way but I enjoyed our time here. It's a huge property for kids to run around and to explore. I love the silly drawings all over the museum. The exhibits are nicely displayed. It wasn't crowded at all, but we came on a weekday. There is a kid's area with some toys.
Ü L — Google review
Complete transformation of the museum post-COVID. The displays of Austronesian culture are amazing, both in the objects themselves but also in the stories that are told. Contemporary contributions and challenges to these communities are presented with thoughtfulness and respect. A must see museum. The only downside is that is is located far from any public transportation so you will need to taxi, bike or drive; its kind of out in the boonies!
Michael J — Google review
Fascinating exhibits on Taiwanese and Austronesian prehistory. Definitely worth a visit. Not very convenient to visit if you don't have a personal vehicle though.
Nicole P — Google review
I was very impressed by the museum! Both by the building itself and by all the information available. It covers Taiwanese history from 30.000 years ago all the way to 400 years ago, with 2 dedicated sections for the human side and environmental side of things. It also has a section for international historical sites and austronesian history. I would definitely recommend it to any english speaking tourists in the area. One thing to note: if you plan on using google maps to find your way there with a bycicle, it will guide you to the back of the building where the wheelchair accessible lift is located to access the onsite restaurant for some reason. The entrance is on the other side of the building, just in front of the massive parking space.

Zhiben Hot Spring in Taitung is a renowned destination offering various hot-spring pools for therapeutic soaking. The rejuvenating properties of the hot spring water, rich in minerals and known for its skin-beautifying effects, have earned it the nickname "Beauty Hot Spring." Despite aging facilities and some accessibility challenges, Zhiben's beautiful surroundings make it a great spot to relax and enjoy different pool temperatures, including a water bubble massage section.
I’ve been to this same exact location for hot spring since I was a teen, the facilities are kept clean unlike some of the older traditional places where they allow the whole place to fall apart, this one managed to still impress me after coming back from decades ago. I definitely recommend this and will continue to bring my family here to enjoy time together.
Michael L — Google review
Many jacuzzi options available in public pool. Remember to wear your swimwear and swim cap is compulsory ! Entrance fee is reasonable as there is no time restriction. Clothes spinner is available and convenient to spin dry our swimwear after the hot spring. Couple room is limited but cheaper for 2 person.
Jo E — Google review
The hotel had good hot springs but none of them are “natural” they are all in man made concrete pools. The mountains surrounding are breathtaking. The surrounding villages are very run down.
Taylor T — Google review
Went there at 9am for hit springs. We had everything for ourself. There were 3 monkey, Great experience! Cant rate the rooms
Sleni N — Google review
Beautiful relaxing hot springs, surrounded by mountains. Different pools and temperatures, including water bubble massage section.
Henry S — Google review
Zhiben's hot spring water is great but the facilities are starting to show their age a little. It's a bit pricy and hard to travel to but it is great for a soak on a cold day.
Edwin L — Google review
There's is not an actual public hotspring here. Go to the temple nearby, get inside, they have bathtubs with hot and cold water, "pay" a small donation in the entrance when you finish using them (based on what locals said, 50NTD per person is fine).

Rebuilding. Will be great again. Meanwhile perfectly good. Short walk to excellent food. Room simple but intelligent.

Fried chicken takeaway
If you're a fan of fried chicken, then 阿鋐炸雞—正氣店 is a must-visit spot. This fast-food joint offers a no-frills dining experience with its straightforward menu of fried chicken and sides. The fried chicken meal is a popular choice, featuring a mix of chicken pieces and french fries at an affordable price.
One of the best fried chicken we have ever tasted. Beat all the world wide fast food chain. Must try the drumstick. It is so succulent that juice burst out. Seasoning was also good. The buns were a classic taiwanese snacks. If u come Taidung, must give this a try!
Liwei C — Google review
Husband loves fried chicken so we had to try the best rated fried chicken in town. Got the fried chicken meal including a drink, one leg, one wing, 3 chicken pieces and a few pieces of french fries for 115NT. It was a weekday at 4pm but the place still super busy. Seats were available upstairs. The chicken pieces were good and the drumstick was also good, however, the chicken wing with the perfect ratio of pepper, herbs and spices to meat, was the BEST. It tasted better than Nagoya's famous chicken wings. It has like a Chinese herbby spice in it but in an amazing way. Will return for the chicken wings for sure!!!!! Note to self: They do delivery for orders above 100NT when the store is not too busy.
Vivian S — Google review
This one also had some good reviews. The wait was not long and the food was made fresh to order. The chicken was crispy and the flavour was different than the Blue Dragonfly store. But the setup is identical... Try it for yourself and see if you like it.
Ting F — Google review
The chicken is crispy and juicy and tasty, the onion rings, fries and potato nugget are crunchy.
Simon C — Google review
Affordable but great tasting fried chicken. The chicken was cooked well and the batter was tasty. Would recommend to anyone looking for a cheap and good fried chicken in the area

Fast food restaurant
Blue Dragonfly Fried Chicken is a popular fast food spot in Taitung, known for its unpretentious atmosphere and delicious fried chicken. It's considered an institution in the area, with many locals having their first taste of local fast food there before big chains arrived. The hot, fragrant, and tenderly fried chicken and french fries set is affordable and offers a refreshing alternative to typical fast food joints.
Tell you what, it's pretty damn good fried chicken if you ask me. Well seasoned and juicy! Totally would come back
Ivan T — Google review
The friend chicken originated from Taitung region. It has a blue coloured dragon fly theme and serve predominantly friend chicken and burgers. There are other meat options too such as pork. The friend chicken tasted like original KFC batter but tasted stronger and more fragrant. The burger has no taste of meat on the bites, could be the patty is thin. A worthwhile place to go for fast food in Taitung.
Calvin C — Google review
Delicious chicken with a unique seasoning. Meat was juicy and tender. My beef burger tasted abit weird due to the sauce. Thought the sauce would go better with chicken or fish.
Chloe S — Google review
We headed to Blue Dragonfly as our breakfast for our trip, Taitung’s iconic local fast-food spot. The last time I ate here was during my college internship in Taitung, and the taste is still as unique as I remember. The place was packed as always a true local favorite.
Wayne S — Google review
The one and only famous fried chicken which is located in Taitung. Highly recommended by the locals too. I decided to go and give it a try. The queue was alright when I arrived so I didn't wait too long to get my food. The fried chicken was good to be honest. And I was quite impressed. Even better than KFC. Friendly staff. The price is pretty standard. Overall it is good. Finger licking good.
Neo — Google review
One of the best fried chicken I ever had!! The smell and taste was so good. Try to avoid peak hours as the queue can take quite a while. Queued for close to 20mins during lunch time.
Yi N — Google review
Saw some good reviews do wanted to try it out as I love my fried chicken! A good 15-20 min wait due to the queue, but the food is made fresh and it looks like its a family business. I liked the chicken, as it was crispy and flavourful. Decide for yourself if you have the time to try it.

Small plates restaurant
Restaurant
Light Seagrass Health Food Hall is a small plates restaurant that offers delectable, affordable, and nourishing cuisine. Their menu features both English and Japanese visuals, which can be provided upon request. One highly recommended dish is the pumpkin puree served over noodles. However, it's important to note that the restaurant remains closed on every 10th, 20th, and 30th day of each month.
As a foreigner this is a great place to go, the food is really good and healthy, we ordered 5 dishes and all of them were high quality. Chef really cares about the work.

This is my favorite healthy, friendly, and delicious spot in downtown Taitung. If you’re looking for meals that are good for you and full of flavor, this cozy place is a must-visit. The vibe is welcoming, and the staff are both friendly and professional—clearly passionate about what they do. The food is made with fresh, wholesome ingredients, lightly seasoned, and free from extra grease—perfect if you're after something nourishing yet satisfying. It’s also pet-friendly, so feel free to bring your furry buddy along for the laid-back, family-style vibes. Healthy eating never felt so easy—or so inviting!
Pei S — Google review
A non-descript shop after the night market. The noddle with peanut sauce was excellent. Noodle texture was al dente which is amazing. Beef noodle was another highlight. Beef slices was thick and tender, amongst the best I had. Broth is medium bodied and flavorsome. XLB or soup dumpling did not had much broth as expected.
MNG — Google review
I've been coming here for fourteen years! I live their seaweed and chicken dumplings, beef noodle soup, and pumpkin curry. All of their cold dishes are amazing as well.
Chris C — Google review
We had sesame noodles and veggie noodles and the best chicken soup dumplings. The food was delicious and the staff were very helpful.
Lorna — Google review
I visited Light Seagrass in Taitung in March 2025. In a world where “healthy” often means soulless, 海草手作健康輕食館 is an outlier. It’s a spot that refuses to cut corners—even if that means cutting profits. For Gen-Xers who grew up on bold flavors but now crave balance, this place offers more than food. It offers peace of mind—and maybe even a second helping of hope. So if you’re in Taitung and looking for a meal that’s light on salt but heavy with care, head to this humble haven. The dumplings await. For my full review, check out my video diary in my YouTube Channel!

If you're on the hunt for a delightful culinary experience, look no further than Sapphire Shaoxing Fried Rice. Nestled conveniently near Uniqlo, this eatery boasts an impressive menu complete with English translations, making it accessible for everyone. The prices are quite reasonable, and you can even enjoy complimentary rice (jia fan) to elevate your meal to extra-large proportions! The fried rice here is nothing short of extraordinary—many patrons rave about it being the best they've ever tasted.
By far THE BEST fried rice I’ve ever had, highly recommended!!! This is something you can’t judge the taste from pictures, give it a try and thank me later👍🏼👍🏼 FYI, we ordered only one to share the first time because we had to save some room for other snacks. After eating more snack afterwards, we came back and ordered one each! The first time we tried it spicy, and the second time we tried mild. Both are delicious🤤 Some tips & tricks: the second one in each colour section on the menu are their bestsellers!

Overall, super tasty and I would say it is the best stir-fried rice in Taitung, it worth to come have try!!!!
Zeng H — Google review
Stir-fried rice is delicious! Ambiance not super, but fine for a short-order rice place. The tips I read were to avoid the noodles and only add spice if you are a SERIOUS spice lover. Ours was perfectly fine without any spice. Not at all bland. We ordered the shaoxing surf and turf and the garlic sausage.

Breakfast restaurant
Restaurant
Ming Kui Breakfast Restaurant is a reliable breakfast spot located near the PX Mart in the Fengrong area. It offers all the classic breakfast options, including toast and danbing. While it may not offer anything fancy, it's a dependable choice for a quick and easy meal. Visitors have praised its golden crispy toasted items and tasty burgers at affordable prices.
Amazing!!! The marinated roasted pork, pork cutlet and egg burger and the French toast is the best. Highly recommended!!
Liu H — Google review
Ming Kui was my first breakfast restaurant in Taiwan. The restaurant is covered and open air (no door to enter). When I arrived, there was a queue for takeaway and one table available with around 5-6 chairs. Because I was dining alone, some people waiting for their takeaway also sat at the table, which I welcomed. At least one of the young staff working spoke and understood English. She helped me order from the menu, and I was able to share my dietary requirements. For example, I had the french toast without condensed milk. She also provided her recommendation, a club sandwich, and I ordered that without mayonnaise. The drink was dried longan tea (cold) without ice. The tea was very sweet, so I sipped on it with each bite, and that turned out to be a good mix. The food itself was good (4/5). The drink arrived first, followed by the french toast, and a couple of minutes later the club sandwich. Another staff member spoke English when I paid. As soon as I left the table, someone else sat down. Overall, it was a good, relaxed experience and an enjoyable first. It also provided the energy needed for the bicycle ride around the beautiful Taitung Forest Park.
