Sights & Landmarks
Sacred & Religious Sites
Uesugi Shrine, also known as Uesugi Jinja, was established in 1871 to honor the legendary Sengoku era shogun Kenshin Uesugi. This shrine is a significant site in Yonezawa and attracts visitors year-round who come to pray for various blessings such as prosperity and the well-being of newborns. The serene surroundings of the shrine create a peaceful atmosphere, making it an ideal place for contemplation and leisurely walks.
I visited Uesugi Jinja when visiting Yonezawa and I definitely would recommend it to any visitors! This temple was peaceful to walk through and take in the beautiful nature surrounding it. The temple was quiet and not crowded. Around the temple was a beautiful river the many coi fish that locals were feeding with bread. This was something so special and pure to witness. This temple sold Goshuinchou and omamoris.

Self-reliance is key. Why not pay a visit to the shrine to heighten your feeling of "if you try, you can achieve it?" After your visit, it would be a good idea to purchase the "if you try, you can achieve it" charm.

Yonezawa Castle Ruins, located in a historical city center, was once home to the Nagai clan and later governed by the Uesugi clan. The castle grounds are now identifiable by surrounding moats and connecting bridges leading to Matsugasaki Park. The park features statues of military commanders and politicians from the Sengoku period to the Edo period, providing an opportunity to learn about Japan's history.

(Translated by Google) This castle is one of the 100 Greatest Castles in Japan, and was the headquarters of the Yonezawa Domain during the Edo period. The surrounding earthworks and moat give the impression of a castle, but today it's probably better known as Uesugi Shrine. The moat itself is small enough that you can walk around it in about 10 minutes, so I imagine it was a relatively modest castle even in the past. The north side of the moat resembles a lotus field. I visited in September, so the peak season had passed, but I'm sure it would be a spectacular sight in the summer. Also, the flags with the characters "Bi" and "Ryu" fluttering above the main gate are really cool. Whenever I see the character "Bi," I automatically think of Uesugi Kenshin, so it's amazing how powerful imprinting can be. There are bronze statues scattered throughout the park, including a statue of Lord Uesugi Kenshin, the strongest warrior of the Sengoku period, as well as Uesugi Kagekatsu, the first lord of the Yonezawa Domain, his military strategist Naoe Kanetsugu, and the renowned ruler Uesugi Yozan, still revered and loved by many today, as well as other aces associated with the Uesugi clan. It seems that Date Masamune was born here, and although it is compact, it is a castle ruin that has been home to many stars.

Matsugasaki Park, situated on the former grounds of Yonezawa Castle, offers a serene atmosphere with its water-filled moats and historical sites related to the influential Uesugi clan. It's a great spot for families to take a leisurely stroll and appreciate the park's beauty while also appealing to history enthusiasts interested in Japan's feudal history. The park hosts events like the Uesugi Lantern Festival, creating a magical ambiance with illuminated sakura trees and a picturesque red bridge.
A beautiful historic location, great not only for families to stroll and admire the beauty of the park, but also for those fascinated by Japan's feudal history, particularly of the Uesugi Clan. I went during the Uesugi Lantern Festival and the atmosphere was fantastic. I first went on the night the lanterns were first lit, which was pretty magical, especially seeing the (then bare) sakura trees lit up alongside the moat leading the eye to a beautiful red bridge also lit up. The next day the festival was in full swing, with food carts out selling classing Japanese festival food fare as well as souvenirs. The energy was fantastic, watching kids have snowball fights and couples taking pictures with the lanterns it was truly picturesque. I wuold love to return when the cherry blossom are in full bloom and to learn more of the Uesugi Shrine!

Toko Sake Museum, established in 1597 and managed by Kojima Sohoten, is a prominent sake museum in Tohoku. It offers an extensive display of the brewery's history and allows visitors to taste various sake varieties, including the renowned 'Toko' brand and award-winning umeshu. Housed in a historic building that was once a sake brewery, the museum features old merchant equipment exhibits, traditional room reconstructions, and a serene garden.
This sake museum is housed in a wonderful old building which was itself a sake brewery before Toko took on the responsibility for renovating it. So glad that they preserved it! It's worth checking if a guide is available to get the most out of your visit but you can also follow along with the English explanations. The exhibition of old merchant equipment and reconstructions of traditional rooms are really interesting and don't miss out on the lonely garden. It's best not to drive if visiting here so that you can do some sake sampling. Toko's sake is very high quality and, with a variety of types to choose from, you are sure to find one that you like.

Totally worth the money. Excellent sake making displays as well as the rooms and the garden. Interesting history on the Wagu beef cattle raised locally. Sake tasting was fun, but of course I would like bigger portions, and who wouldn't? LOL. The young woman at the tasting room made a excellent recommendation to a upscale beef restaurant that was totally a great experience and reasonable priced lunch.

As a sake lover, if you are traveling Yamagata and stopping by Yonezawa, give Toko Sake Museum a visit. Toko, as one of the oldest sake breweries in Japan, produces some of the nicest sake in the market. Here, not only can you visit the museum to learn about part of the history of sake, you can also taste different sakes by Kojima Sohonten: from the brewery execlusive bottles, to the very premium top-of-the-line execellence. It is a must-visit for sake enthusiasts visit Yonezawa.

Nestled in Yonezawa, China Soba Kumabun is a must-visit for ramen enthusiasts exploring the renowned ramen region of Yamagata. Since we'd come all the way to Yamagata, we decided we wanted to try some ramen, so we went to Kumabun. It was a hit. The soup is a combination of dried sardines and animal ingredients, and is deep yet light, making it the ultimate Chinese noodle dish. The thin, curly noodles are a perfect match, and the tender pork slices were also amazing. I wasn't that hungry, but the ramen was so light that I ate it all up in no time. I knew the owner had changed, but I didn't want to judge it without going there, so I decided to visit for the first time in a while. To be honest, it no longer feels like the good, old-fashioned Yonezawa ramen shop it once was. The soup was delicious, but the noodles were a completely different beast. They lacked the gritty, powdery flavor of Yonezawa ramen's traditional curly noodles, and instead were flat, transparent, and smooth. While many people may prefer this type of noodle, I don't think they're Yonezawa ramen noodles. Furthermore, the atmosphere inside and outside the restaurant has completely changed. The old-fashioned charm is gone, and all you see are warning signs. I understand the desire for people to follow the rules, but I think they're losing the warmth of a ramen shop beloved by locals. It's a real shame. However, as it's a restaurant I loved, I hope they do their best. They didn't come to take orders before the store opened, they took orders after being shown to a seat after the store opened, but the food was served quickly. And on that day, it seemed like they opened 5 minutes before they opened. I ordered a large bowl of Chinese noodles. It was the Yonezawa ramen I had imagined. Compared to my favorite Kitakata ramen, Sano-men, the difference is that Yonezawa ramen has thin curly noodles. By default, it was 1 small piece of chashu, shinachiku, naruto, and 1 small piece of seaweed. I finished eating all the way to the soup. Bekoya is a restaurant that offers high-grade Yonezawa beef prepared in various ways, such as yakiniku, sukiyaki, shabu shabu, and grilled steak. The establishment has a simple yet elegant ambiance with tall windows. Customers have praised the deliciousness of the Yonezawa beef and appreciated the attentive service provided by the staff. Some diners recommend making reservations in advance to secure a semi-private room for an enhanced dining experience.
APRIL 2023 The restaurant serves Yonezawa beef cooked in different methods including yakiniku, sukiyaki, shabu shabu and grilled steak. Reserved in advance for sukiyaki and got a semi private room which was nice, really enjoyed the traditional dining atmosphere. I had the highest grade set meal which was a very good deal, much cheaper compared to eating wagyu in more populated cities such as Tokyo and Osaka. Yonezawa beef was extremely marbled and delicious, it did not feel too fatty, perfect pairing with the sweet sukiyaki sauce and the vegetables. Also the service was great, the staff prepared the pot with the ingredients, explained how Yonezawa sukiyaki is different to Kanto sukiyaki and showed me how to best cook and enjoy the wagyu and vegetables; very friendly and welcoming.

Excellent and delicious Yonezawa Beef. I had the Grilled BBQ Yonezawa Beef. Even though it was pricey, it was worth it. This is charcoal style BBQ and it does taste better when using charcoal rather than gas. The staff here were nice and the restaurant is on the fancier side. The only minor complaint was the small kids in the next booth were being noisy and playing too much but of course, the staff would not say anything. Located in front of Toge Station, a remote station famous for its switchbacks, this is the only restaurant still open in the area. This was my third time at Toge Station, but I think it was my first visit. My main purpose for visiting here was to see Namekawa Falls, and that morning I had walked through the stream to the basin. I was a little worried because of the recent increase in bear attacks nationwide. For meals, we had soba, udon, mochi, oden, and more. I ordered the four-color mixed mochi (natto, bean paste, sesame, and zunda) for 950 yen. It was my first time trying natto mochi, but it was surprisingly easy to eat. As mochi is their specialty, it was soft, freshly pounded, and delicious. They've put a lot of effort into their garden, and I sat with a view outside, enjoying the teahouse atmosphere. For souvenirs, they have Toge no Chikara Mochi (8 pieces) for 1000 yen. There were also two mobile suits, and photos of people wearing them were posted up around the store.

(Translated by Google) I drove here when I visited Toge Station, a remote station, for the second time. Last time, I took the train from Takahata Station to Toge Station, so I was able to buy Toge no Chikara Mochi sold at the station, but I was unable to visit the manufacturing store. On National Route 13 heading from the hidden hot springs of Yonezawa to Fukushima, there are signs to Itaya Station, Toge Station, and even the most remote hot spring area in the remotest area. It took about 30 minutes from the off-road, and after approaching Itaya Station, I arrived here while constantly being careful about oncoming traffic. Next to the old-fashioned tea shop is a newly built-style house. It's a teahouse that has been operating here for over a century, and I'm impressed by that. It is a quiet space except when the Yamagata Shinkansen passes by Toge Station. Entering the entrance to the rock garden space, I enter the charming building, the teahouse, after 12 o'clock. There were several groups of people who had come by car, so for some reason I felt at ease. I ordered mixed mochi and kinako mochi, and the old lady who must have been serving customers for decades was very efficient. They served it to me in about 10 minutes. I can only describe it as delicious. Each one had a different taste, and the mochi itself was delicious, so I ate it all up in no time. The mochi must have been filling, and before I knew it, I was full. As a souvenir, I also bought a towel, which I was told is only sold here. I was worried on the way, but I was right to go for it. If you like remote stations, this is a place you should consider visiting by car as well as taking the train. It is not recommended to visit in a sports car or a vehicle with a low ground clearance. The road is poorly paved, and there are large potholes here and there, so you will have to be very careful when driving.

Larger vehicles can't pass each other on the dirt road, which is narrow. (Original)

(Translated by Google) Both the sweet and savory mochi are delicious! I bought a box of eight Touge no Chikaramochi as a souvenir. These daifuku are filled with smooth bean paste that isn't too sweet, so you can eat them all in no time.

(Translated by Google) Although it has been a long time since the station became a station where many trains do not stop, it continues to operate well. Chikaramochi in a box is so delicious that it would be a big hit if sold at department stores in Tokyo. It's worth going all the way here to buy some, but it's a hidden gem and difficult to access. If you go by car, choose an SUV. The last 500m is tough for a normal car. At Toge Station, there was a sign saying, ``The other day, a worker was attacked by a bear, so please be careful.'' So everyone, please be careful of bears. (Translated by Google) It is located right next to Toge Station on the Ou Main Line. Toge Station is a popular photo spot for trains because the Yamagata Shinkansen passes through it, and it is also a tourist spot. There are table seats and raised seats inside the shop, and there are also table seats outside the shop. It is truly a teahouse. The last 1km or so to get here is a very narrow road, and the last 500m or so is a very rough road. Well, you can manage with a normal car. As the name of the shop suggests, you can buy eight souvenirs of Chikara Mochi, which are mochi filled with red bean paste. The shop itself has a teahouse-like appearance, and you can eat and drink inside the shop. There are several types of mochi, such as ankoro mochi, zunda mochi, and kinako mochi, and there was also a mix of four types. There are also udon and soba noodles, as well as zaru soba zaru udon, sansai udon, and soba and udon with mochi. You can choose between hot and cold udon and udon noodles. This time I wanted to eat, so I ordered Zaru Soba. Well, it's a tourist spot, so you can't expect much, but it was manageable. They told me it would take a while, but it only took a little while, and it wasn't a horrible wait. Well, let's just wait patiently. Toge Station is a bit of a tourist spot, so the shops are quite busy. It might be a good place to stop for a quick break or a meal. Kongokaku in Yonezawa is a massive restaurant with four levels, each offering a different dining experience. The first floor serves as the lobby, while the second floor is dedicated to barbecue, the third for hotpot, and the fourth for steak. Known for its high-grade Yonezawa Beef, this place offers delectable cuts that simply melt in your mouth. Lunchtime presents an opportunity to savor this top-quality beef at an affordable price.

We chose to have yaki niku for lunch before going to Sendai, it’s good they have the tasting set to try out many parts, but if you want to best only, just go for the fattest part, the meat here had a special after taste after the fat melt in month, delicious & unique, recommend

We had the best meal of our lives here! (no kidding). The steak was amazing, the staff were terrific (although we had to use google translate a little bit). Definitely want to come back here next time even if it is a little out of the way. 11 out of 10 stars! P.S., the view out of the windows with the mountains and river in the background was just beautiful; very romantic at night.
