Suwon

Suwon is the capital of Gyeonggi Province, in northwestern South Korea. It’s known for the late-18th-century Hwaseong Fortress, with its commanding stone wall and 4 pagoda-topped arched gates. Near Hwahongmun Gate, Hwaseong Haenggung Palace has a traditional banquet hall. The raised Yeonmudae Post, once a military training ground, offers fortress views. Suwon Hwaseong Museum explores the construction of the fortress.

Suwon Fortress Hwaseong is an 18th-century fortress with ancient city walls and original structures, providing access to the old city. It offers a glimpse into Korean history and culture. Nearby attractions include riding a railway bike in Uiwang for a sunset view near Seoul, exploring Gwangmyeong Cave for unique experiences in wine caves, and visiting Kunchiyan's Hwadam Forest to enjoy nature in summer.
Well worth a visit. Free to walk the walls. The palace costs 2000 Won. About 6 or so Ks all the way round. Plenty of places to stop off for coffee or something to eat. Try Chicken Street for lunch.

Hwaseong Fortress in Suwon, a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site, is a great place to spend time with family or a loved one. The area beautifully blends traditional Korean charm with a modern atmosphere, and there are many trendy cafés and restaurants nearby, making it a popular spot for young people as well. However, parking can be very difficult on weekends or public holidays, so it’s recommended to take the subway or use public transportation instead.
ARTRINITYYY ( — Google review
Very nice fortress. No need to book a tour if u are willing to walk it. Lots of places to sit and rest. A lot of shops inside. Close to the art meusium and Buda statue. King G. Build the place. It is more like city walled with palace inside to protect the city.

Suwon is one of the travel spots I highly recommend for anyone planning a trip to Korea. The city has a calm and peaceful vibe, with plenty of interesting attractions where you can take beautiful photos around local villages, visit filming locations from your favorite series, and walk along the fortress walls for a stunning view of the city from above. It takes only about an hour to get here from Seoul by bus, making it a perfect one-day trip destination.
Nick M — Google review
Great experience. Very large fortress with city walls in good conditions and a great palace. No crowds like in Seoul. And a very nice old town.
Christophe C — Google review
Nice fortress. You can walk along the wall and see the city from up high. There is no charge to visit this.

I am so glad that we got out of Seoul for the day to visit Suwon. Walked around the fortress, nice and peaceful with beautiful autumn foliage. And I had the best coffee at a little coffee shop in town.

Nice atmosphere, beautiful town, with small alleys you can walk through. There are many cute cafes and restaurants. About 1 hour from Seoul.

Suwon Hwaseong Museum is a dedicated space showcasing the rich history and culture of Hwaseong Fortress and Suwon city. It offers a comprehensive look into King Jeongjo's aspirations, the fortress construction process, and the daily lives during the Joseon Dynasty. The museum houses various exhibits including models, maps, original architectural plans, and multimedia displays that provide detailed insights into the fortress's construction and significance.
I like the architecture of this museum. It has both inside and outside display. Some parts of this museum is under construction at this moment, and they’ll reduce the entry fee at the beginning of May 2024. This is one of the must see place while you are in Suwon.
Trân — Google review
The Suwon Hwaseong Museum is a compact yet informative destination that offers a deep dive into the history of Suwon Hwaseong Fortress and King Jeongjo. You can expect to spend around 1 hour exploring the exhibits, which provide a well-curated overview of the fortress's significance and the architectural innovations of the time. While much of the architecture within the museum is a remake, it effectively helps visitors understand the historical context and importance of Suwon Hwaseong. The displays are engaging and provide valuable insights into King Jeongjo's vision and the fortress's role in Korean history. Overall, it's a worthwhile stop for anyone interested in learning more about this fascinating period.

Interesting museum on the palace, its restoration (there are some original plans on display) and the fortresss. I also liked the miniatures. Admission is free. There are two floors. Should take you 30-60 mins. Please note there is very little information in English (not zero, just little).
Loek F — Google review
Small museum but is worth a visit if you are in the area. Good exhibits many with English titles. The videos of swordsmanship, spears, riding horses while using weapons was great. Walk the wall. Enjoy.

Very cool place for visit. You can walk around the fortress. Too many activites is there. Traditional with the house, the people... The Korean old people really like hiking. You can see too many of them when you visit this place. They can not speak English but they very friendly and helpful. They use body language to helping you. Last time I went. I met the old man. Last time I went on winter. It’s too cool, but the sun is also very good. Around the fortress. you can see the park, lake was freeze, it’s make me fulfilled@@

Paldalmun Gate, the grand southern entrance of Hwaseong Fortress, is a remarkable testament to Suwon's rich history. Constructed in the late 18th century, this two-story wooden pavilion showcases a blend of Chinese and Western architectural influences. Although it stands apart from the fortress walls due to urban development in the 1970s, Paldalmun remains an iconic landmark surrounded by crescent-shaped walls.
I ran along the wall of the fort . It's really beautifull and properly maintained by govt

This is by far the prettiest and most impressive gate of the entire Suwon city wall. It is located at the foot of the Paldalmun hill on a roundabout.

Sara M — Google review
This southern gate of Hwaseong Fortress is a magnificent structure but cannot be easily viewed up close since it is surrounded by a busy street. It is a part of the fortress walking loop.
Malgorzata P — Google review
Cool fortress to see. Suwon is worth the day trip to see the amazing history and shops inside the walls.

The Paldal Gate is good but the real attraction is walking the adjacent old city wall. This takes 2 hours, or longer if you explore wvery nook and cranny. The wall is 5 stars.

Paldalmun Gate, also known as the South Gate, is a stunning historical landmark in Suwon that resembles a roundabout. Its impressive construction showcases traditional Korean architecture, and the views from the gate are absolutely breathtaking. The surrounding area is well-maintained, making it a great spot for photos and exploration. Despite the crowds, the vibrant atmosphere adds to its charm. Overall, Paldalmun Gate is a must-see for anyone visiting Suwon, offering a glimpse into the city’s rich history and stunning architecture

Hwaseong Haenggung Palace, situated within a fortress in Suwon, is a meticulously restored palace dating back to 1789. The palace complex includes a visitor center, theater, and exhibition hall. It served as the temporary residence of the king and hosts various cultural experiences and activities. Visitors can enjoy the serene village scenery inside the city walls and witness a stunning night view. Nearby attractions include Suwon Chicken Street and Blood Soup Street for those looking to explore local cuisine.
I recently visited Hwaseong Haenggung on June 1, 2025, and was captivated by its blend of history, architecture, and serene surroundings. As soon as I entered, I was struck by the beautifully preserved fortress walls and regal palace buildings nestled within. Walking through the ornate throne hall and secret corridors, I could almost feel echoes of the past. The landscaped gardens and seasonal flowers added a peaceful charm. It’s a must-visit spot for history buffs and anyone seeking a tranquil cultural escape in Suwon!
Zwe H — Google review
This is the typical Korean Palace in terms of structure, layout, and decor. I don't find it particularly elaborate or lavishly decorated. Still, it is pretty to visit and wander around its courts. It is very similar to the ones we visited in Seoul.
Hugo P — Google review
Just buy tickets at the nearby counter. Noted it was just renovated in 2023. The place looks quite big (empty) tho… Recommend to walk up the hill at the back and look down for the view. You can have a rest there also! Quite chill.
Sabrina T — Google review
Everyone knows this place if they visit Suwon, but it is worth to visit at night also. You could enjoy a different version of this palace and could experience much more of this place.

Beautiful historical palace in the heart of Suwon! I really enjoyed walking around Hwaseong Haenggung. The palace is clean, well-maintained, and surrounded by lovely traditional houses and shops. You can rent a hanbok nearby and take beautiful photos inside the palace area — it feels like traveling back to the Joseon era! 👑 It’s easy to reach by public transport and the entrance fee is affordable. Perfect spot to visit with family or friends, especially on weekends. Don’t forget to try traditional snacks around the market area after your visit! 😋✨ #HwaseongHaenggung #SuwonTrip #KoreaTravel

A wonderful piece of history, beautifully restored after its gruesome past. There is a huge garden with plenty of spots to relax and take in the view. We visited on a Saturday, and were lucky to see a re-enactment of a royal guard ritual from King Jeongjo’s era.

Gwanggyo Lake Park, situated in Suwon-si, Gyeonggi-do, is a popular destination known for its picturesque setting and diverse recreational activities. The park features two beautiful lakes, Sindae Lake and Wonchun Lake, surrounded by a complex offering various cultural experiences. With over 3 million annual visitors, the park provides an ideal environment for leisure and fitness enthusiasts alike.
A wow place, it’s just a park for nearby residential apartments but it open for public. Night view is super bright full with stalls. You can have a pleasant walk there all side lake. There are two famous mall nearby first one lotte mart and second one the gallearia mall.

Not a far drive from Seoul is Gyenggi-do Lake park area. This has a different vibe than most of the Seoul metro area, whereas its a bit more nature centric with a decent sized lake. We visited the area on a cold New Year's day. There's a decent sized shopping complex with many upscale eateries. On site was a pop-up KAWS store and installation which was cool. I recommend this area if you're looking for a slight change of pace.
Harold P — Google review
I have been here a total of three times and I intend to go back because it's so gorgeous and peaceful. You can have a picnic. You can walk around the lake or cycle around. Lots to do. So many cafes to enjoy coffee. You can also go up the tower and get a great view of surrounding areas.
Wandile D — Google review
I stayed in an apartment overlooking Gwanggyo Lake Park and walked there most days of my stay. It was August and the temperature was like walking into a solid wall of heat. When walking in the daytime the lake was most quiet apart from families taking advantage of the spouts of water to cool off young children. At nighttime families and couples and everyone come out to walk around and take some exercise out of the day time sun. At night time the lake is lit up and looks beautiful. In the daytime the cicadas sing and the noise is, at times, deafening. It felt very safe walking around the lake, even when on my own. I stayed for a week and walked around the lake lots of times, and each time I was able to vary my route as there are so many different paths.
Tracie W — Google review
The serene waters and lush surroundings make it perfect for a leisurely stroll or a peaceful picnic. The walking paths are well-maintained, offering picturesque views and opportunities for relaxation. The park's design seamlessly blends nature with modern architecture, creating a harmonious atmosphere. However, limited facilities like restrooms and food options can be a drawback. Overall, Gwangyo Lake provides a refreshing escape from the city's hustle and bustle, allowing visitors to unwind and connect with nature. It's a hidden gem, though some additional amenities would enhance the experience even more.
Waqas R — Google review
I enjoyed this place. Walking around both lakes was a bit of a trek, but there is amazing sites and a ton of different trails you can take off on. There are tons of different things you can do along the trails. There are climbing walls, there is a stamp collecting trail that you can walk. There are a bunch of different walk outs that you can go on to look at different parts.of the lakes. There are red phone booths that have books in them.
Jeremy B — Google review
Absolutely stunning view of the lake and some of the city. Also a great opportunity for a somewhat longer walk around the lake. Especially in the evening, the lake and the buildings are lit up amazingly. I loved it there and would go back in an instant. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area.
Julia S — Google review
It's a great place for walking and there is a tall tower that people can go up to the top by an elevator for free. There are many stores and restaurants in some parts of the park. I recommend it.

Chicken shop
Jin Mi Chicken is a must-visit spot on Suwon Chicken Street, located near the Hawseong Haengung Palace. The area is filled with numerous fried chicken restaurants, making it a paradise for food enthusiasts. Despite language barriers, the friendly staff are accommodating to foreigners and make the experience enjoyable. The restaurant offers crispy and tender fried chicken at an affordable price, best enjoyed with a refreshing beer.
100% fresh made fried chicken on demand. The meat is still juicy and the crust crispy. Especially the crispy fried chciken without sauce and just combined with salt shows the true fresh taste. I really liked the concept of a whole chicken with bones to avoid cherry picking and corresponding waste.
Christian B — Google review
A famous fried chicken restaurant in Suwon with crispy fried chicken and fried chicken coated in the original Korean red sauce. The restaurant is crowded and popular among Koreans and tourists. The crispy fried chicken goes well with beer.
TUMNOY T — Google review
My Korean friend took me here. It was a great chicken restaurant I’ve ever tried. I love it
Trang D — Google review
the ckicken is very crispy on the ouside and tender on the inside. staffs are very friendly and supportive. you can order different flavors ro try but in overall, fried chicken in Suwon is already very popular in this neighborhood so you don't have to worry about the quality. the price is not expensive at all. One thing that you have to be patient because they only fry the chicken once the order is made so it will take around 15 or 20 mins for the chicken to be served. Just try this restaurant if you come to Suwon, it's worth every penny 💌
Khanh ( — Google review
Not Solo travel tourist friendly. Everything is in Korean and the instructions outside say to seat yourself which I did and although there were three idle waiters, none approached or offered to serve me. I watched other solo locals walk in and be served immediately. The message is clear that this is only for locals 👍🏻
Joshua R — Google review
I wish I could give more stars, this is one of the best meals I've ever had.
Ricardo ( — Google review
I walked for three hours along Hwaseong Fortress (or 'Hwaseong') and found myself near the Chicken Street, so I thought, 'I have to grab a chicken before I leave.' I went into the busiest-looking place, but... it was quite disappointing. I didn't like how the chicken was chopped into too many small, broken pieces. The state of the frying/batter was poor, and the seasoning was not good. The service was also unfriendly. In short, it was definitely not a place worth going out of your way for, or lining up to eat at.
Z. Z — Google review
Frankly speaking, not as nice other korean fried chicken I've tried. Full of bones - I think probably more suitable for people here for beer and munch the bones? The spicy version is not that spicy, no kick. Atmosphere so so.

If you're in Suwon and craving some delicious Korean boiled pork, look no further than 돈통마늘보쌈 수원역점. This two-story restaurant on Rodeo street near Suwon station offers a delightful bossam experience. The 유치회관 is a renowned establishment in Suwon, South Korea, known for serving traditional Korean hangover soup, also called Haejang-guk. With over 45 years of history, this eatery offers a limited menu focused on the hangover soup and meat platters. The highlight of the experience is the generous portion of congealed ox blood served in the soup. Additionally, patrons can enjoy complimentary self-serve kimchi and ample parking space.
Glad to visit to have a quick korean traditional soup. Visited around 3:00 pm and no waiting. Tasty soup with free kimchee and even Seonji. Staffs are really friendly.

This place is over 45 years old Korean hangover soup a.k.a Haejangkuk 해장국. They serve only three menus: soup, soup with meat platters. It is an excellent place to taste harjangkuk. Kabojung Kalbi is a popular Korean barbecue restaurant in Suwon, known for its stunning architecture and peaceful ambiance. It offers a wide variety of delicious meat cuts, both marinated and non-marinated, making it the perfect place to experience authentic Korean BBQ. The restaurant is highly recommended for visitors exploring Suwon city or its nearby attractions. In addition to the quality of the barbecue, patrons praise the delectable side dishes that are continuously replenished throughout the meal.

Deon L — Google review
Always top notch and quality of service. Good isn’t meant to be served only for taste here. Staff brings professionalism to accommodate whatever reason the visitation may be (anniversary, family gathering, etc) This restaurant changes how I view the approach of restaurant theme here in Korea for BBQ joints. I feel like the approach is much more towards ‘Here are too selection and quality of side dishes and Korean food table, but let me make it better with top quality meats’. So if by any chance you are looking for hardcore cooking BBQ time, I would steer to few other places.

The feast fit for kings ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐, the banchan isn't the same as it was in the past. Also plan to pay a lot more for a lot less. Quality is still good 👍 a place I'd suggest splurging if you want to impress beyond just food. Service with attention to detail is how I'd summarize it 🙏

Kabojung is a proven quality. Of the three most famous Galbi restraunts in Suwon, Kabojung is the largest and arguably the greatest. Silla might be fancier, Bonsuwon might be more modern, but Kabojung is definitely the torch-bearer of Suwon galbi. I would highly recommend this place.

If you happen to go to Suwon city for the Palace tour or other tourists activities it will be perfect to combine the day with a proper Korean BBQ experience at this famous restaurant chain The options of different meat cuts, marinated or not, are delicious. Also the variety and quality of the side dishes are to die for....and they keep coming once you empty the dish! The ambiance is casual, mainly families, friends and some tourists.
