Aquarium
Nature & Parks
Notojima Aquarium is a popular destination on Noto Island, featuring marine life such as whale sharks, dolphins, and sea lions. The aquarium offers shows and feedings for visitors to enjoy. Additionally, the island is home to other tourist attractions like the Notojima Glass Art Museum and is accessible via Noto Ohashi bridge from the main island of Noto Peninsula. The aquarium has been a local favorite for years and houses two impressive whale sharks among its exhibits.
Despite the circumstances from the earthquake, I really enjoyed the aquarium. The large tank at the entrance and the corridor filled with multiple projectors were highlights. Experiencing the lack of running water during parts of the visit was eye-opening. When we first arrived the restrooms at the entrance had running water but by the time we left, it had been cut off. The aquarium also showcases their recovery efforts, which was quite moving. The ticket price was also reduced because of the lack of shows and some exhibits were closed. Only one restaurant and a small tuck shop were open during my visit. I am grateful since it must be hard to run when there's no running water.

Cool variety of fishes and animals but the conditions of the environment is old and sad 💔 The jellyfish have more room than most of the other animals. River otter exhibit is the worst because they have no visible water enrichment. It looked like they used to but maybe the 2024 earthquake caused it's removal. Even so it was over a year ago from today. They look desperate to play but they just sleep... Overcrowding in some tanks. Worst one was the sea turtles - 7 adult ones in 1 small tank. 💔💔 Even the seal tanks are very small. They were doing the same laps over and over around the tank. In the later half of the main aquatic building, there is not enough natural environments. They are barren and not that clean. Not even enough sand to cover the bottom 💔 The only area that looked good was the Sea Galleria with the projectors and maybe the room with the whale shark. Please put the turtles in the whale shark tank if they are compatible. They need to swim!!! Even the dolphin tunnel is abandoned. Not cleaned for ages and the dolphins are so bored they only stay in the corner at the viewing balcony. Looks like it used to be a cleaner aquarium years ago. Surprised no one else mentions these small and bad conditions. I know the earthquake affected a lot of infrastructure but these did not look like temporary locations for many of these fish and mammals. I am shocked to read that there used to be 2 whale sharks, I think 1 is the limit

This is an absolute gem in an already incredible country, well worth the somewhat detour it might require. Our family drove here in October as we had some hours to kill after checking out of our Kanazawa hotel, before we could check in at our next accommodation. Not expecting much, we were blown away by everything from the size and location of the facilities, to the sheer amount of animals, the friendly and enthusiastic staff, shows, etc. The aquarium is quite large with many, small and large, in-door and out-door tanks, located on the northern picturesque shore of Notojima, and you can easily spend a day, which will cost you less than a burger at sea world, Disneyland or similar. We cannot recommend this place enough, and would urge anyone to treat themselves to this hidden gem of Japan. Why not stop and eat some fresh fish on your way there or back, probably the best you’ll ever get.
Tommy H — Google review
The aquarium has long been a favorite of the locals, and you can see the whole place in about two hours. It is one of the few aquariums where whale sharks can be seen, and there are two whale sharks. The tanks are generally lowered to make it easier for children to see the exhibits. The dolphin show is a must-see, and although the pool is small in size, the dolphins' performance is spectacular. Infection control measures are taken, and parents and children will be able to look around in peace.

Considering the Noto earthquake 1+ year ago, this place is well-maintained/ renovated. As the location is quite out of the way, there’s no crowd so it’s suitable for a leisurely trip. Visiting the eateries is a strange experience because of the awesome lack of visitors. The place feels so lonely and a tad sad.
ナオキ — Google review
We arrived sorta late and walked fast so I only took us about 1 hour to finish the whole aquarium. (To enter the parking lot took us almost 30 mins, it was pack during the golden week.) Not bad, not impressive neither. Or maybe I’m just not a aquarium person.
Uhaan — Google review
What an amazing experience, the aquarium may only have a few exhibits, but each one is so interactive and its amazing to see the aquatic life upfront!
Chang T — Google review
This aquarium is huge inside even though it does not look like it from the outside. They have quite complete collections of fish and other marine creatures. It is well kept, clean and informative enough. Although most the information is in Japanese, the basic info of the creatures is in English. They also have a dolphin and sea lion show. The aquarium is in the side of the ocean so you can see the sea. The view is beautiful. There are a lot of restaurants in the place. But the public transport access to this place is not good. Only a few busses a day.

The Nanao Castle Ruins is a stone fortress that was destroyed in the 1570s, located on a hilltop with a hiking trail offering stunning views of Nanao Bay. The area boasts clean and fresh air, while surrounded by cedar trees, strategically placed stone walls and steep stairs. It's one of the 100 Most Famous Japanese Castles, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in imagining the history of the castle during its era.
A place rich in history, great view, good place for a short hike. By the parking lot, there's a spot where you'll see some people gathered around with a table and chairs, they are the volunteer tour guides. Feel free to ask them, they'd be happy to show you around

Clear and super fresh air, awesome and grand scenary of Nanao harbour. It's spectacular. Reaching the car park takes a bit of drive along lots of slopes and narrow roads but will be your worthwhile. There are tactically located stone-stacked walls and steep stairs, on the hills surrounded by cedar trees. Very peaceful and quiet.

One of 100 Most Famous Japanese Castle. It was interesting to see the ruins of Nanao Castle and imagine the things back then in their era. The road already opened since June this year. You can choose whether to drive your car or walk the hiking path. But there were impact of typhoon number 19 so some trees were collapsed.

I visited the place again for the second time and was able to see inside. It was beautiful and we enjoyed a lot. The displays were selected from various artists and they are really interesting. Very interesting glass pieces. Mostly from within Japan, some from Italy and China. 800yen entrance fee. Takes about 30 to walk through reading all description.

The exterior of the museum is curious architecturally, but it's downhill from there. No English translations anywhere (I know, a bit xenophobic of me to expect...) and more so, the collection it self is small and not particularly beautiful.

Recovering from the earthquake, the Nanao Art Museum reopened on September 20, 2025. An event was held in conjunction with this. I happened to be in Nanao, so the timing was perfect and I went to see it. There were many works on display, but here are a few: "Nirvana" - Is an overweight man lounging around soundly surrounded by a large group? "Pine Trees and Crows" - It looks like the crows are having a conversation. They're not saying "Defeat the Upper Rank Six!" "Waves" - Is this the origin of wave depiction? The rough waves of the Sea of Japan are amazing. "Pine Forest Screen" - The transparency is incredible! If I'm not careful, I could get lost. The video explained his many works and his upbringing, which couldn't be covered in just an art exhibition. It's hot outside, and I kind of feel like I don't want to go outside. I'm glad I came. Le Musee de H is a charming café located in Wakura Onsen, offering delicious cakes with a stunning sea view. The café is known for its wide variety of cakes, ranging from 400-600 yen each. Visitors can enjoy their desserts while taking in the beautiful waterfront scenery. The owner, a renowned local patissier, infuses a touch of western dessert culture into the offerings.
The chef and the team put lots of creativity in the cake, no matter the taste also the look of the dessert. I would recommend to have a coffee and the sweet after the relaxing onsen experience.

A must-visit café when in Wakura Onsen (after taking the bath, probably). Delicious cakes with a great sea-view. We had too little time before the return train to Kanazawa so skipped the lunch and had two pastries each and a hot drink here instead. The owner is some very famous local pattisier but you feel the touch of western dessert culture (and we have started to miss nice dessert after being 10 days in Japan). A cake costs between 400-600 jpy, a coffee/tea - around 450 jpy. Other drinks available too but the drinks menu is available in Japanese only (google translator failed to translate all the names to understand what was what, except of Assam tea). The staff's English is very very limited to ask for clarification, so just point on an item on the menu and hope for some luck with guessing ;-) After your coffee&cake here you can also buy some cookies to take with. When leaving, you even get a chance to 'win' a small cookie turning the tombola. We were very satisfied with our visit to this place and would highly recommend it! P.S. "Reservation" applies. You write down your name in the journal when you come to the café and wait until you are called for. When we came (around 14.40 on Sunday), we waited less than 5 minutes, when we were leaving 30 mins later there was already a long queue.

Just found here on an off chance. I had come to go to the onsen but sadly it was shut on the Monday I went. This helped make up for it though. The pastries were delicious and very fine. Combined with a lovely view of the water, it made for an enjoyable experience. As others have mentioned, the staff don't speak much English but went out of their way to help using translation devices, so thank you for being so helpful.

Nestled in the heart of Notojima, Mizu is a must-visit for anyone seeking an authentic local dining experience. While it may not boast the highest level of hospitality compared to other establishments, what truly shines here is the quality and quantity of food served. Known for its seasonal oysters, be sure to try the "Kaki Mampuku Set" if you get the chance! The atmosphere is lively and welcoming, filled with energetic locals who make every visit memorable.
Mizu was a local shop you should go when you visit Notojima. It was affordable and their food come with big portion. If you order set menu (定食), you can choose three of various platters they have on that day. They also have microwave to heat the food in case your platter is cold already. 600 yen for set menu, 700 yen for set menu with grilled fish. 500 yen for the day's service set menu. Cheap and delicious. Might be old and looked a little dirty.

Not fine restaurant (I should say their hospitality is not so high comparing to other industries), but well top notch what they serve. They serve oyster during limited season. If it mets, I strongly recommend to order "Kaki Mampuku Set". You should serve miso-soup by yourself (do as the locals do), but other dishes such as grilled oyster, fried oyster and rice with oyster will be served. You don't have to worry about preparing bill if you're Paypay user. Please keep well time when you visit on congested hours. I strongly recommend to visit here with empty stomach, and will visit again when I have a chance.

We drove north to Noto island in search of the fabled Noto Island Oysters (and to make Jamie take his afternoon nap) and found them by the bunch here at this charming eatery (Mizu) just as you get off the bridge onto the island proper. At just ¥150 a pop (SGD 1.85), downing 16 of these buggers more or less covered the gas bill of driving round trip from Kanazawa where they were charging about ¥600 each in Omiya market. Have to say the piping hot grilled version was a revelation in how sweet and sensuous they were straight out of the shell. #foodie #notoisland

During my recent travels, I had the pleasure of visiting Miyamoto Suisan, a gem known for its incredible seafood offerings. On my visit in November, I was blown away by the sheer size and flavor of their raw oysters—truly a culinary delight! The grilled oysters were equally impressive, cooked to perfection and bursting with taste. I even tried their oyster kamameshi, which was unlike anything I'd experienced before.

(Translated by Google) I was very worried about the earthquake, but when I heard that it was being resold, I ordered it immediately. The oysters arrived yesterday and I immediately grilled them at home. The smell of the grilled sea made me feel nostalgic for Noto, and I was impressed by the flavor of the grilled oysters, which had a strong umami flavor without any of the usual fishy smell. The oysters, which were shucked and fried, were also delicious. I was told that it would still be some time until the restaurant reopened, but I'm sure they're waiting for it to reopen. I look forward to hearing about your reunion. (Translated by Google) I stopped by on a trip on November 22nd last year. I was surprised at how big the raw oysters were❢I was surprised at how delicious they were❣The grilled oysters were also large and delicious. I even had the oyster kamameshi. I had never eaten oysters this big anywhere else, and the flavor was amazing! I wanted to go again when I come to Noto. This disaster will probably cause considerable damage to oyster farming, and are oyster sheds also affected? Above all, I am worried about the health of my family. Please stay safe. I sincerely pray that you can get back to your normal life as soon as possible. This time, we ordered fried oysters set meal (1400 yen), grilled oysters (10 pieces 1600 yen), sake steamed oysters (3 real oysters 1000 yen), and raw oysters (3 pieces 1000 yen). Grilled oysters are cooked by yourself on a gas stove at the table (lectures are provided on how and when to grill them) and are plump and delicious. The fries in the set meal are also large, and those who order the set meal get free refills of rice and tartar sauce, which is good value for money. Raw oysters have a rich taste, and steamed oysters with sake have a concentrated taste that is the best. Fresh and clean oysters are available here all year round, and the period (and price) for which rock oysters and real oysters are served differs depending on the season. According to the proprietress of Miyamoto Suisan, it will be at its most delicious from now until April, so I'd like to go there again in early spring!

Of course, they were very milky and delicious! I highly recommend them! (Original) こちらの岩牡蠣(殻無し生食用)を、お友達からいただきました。 ワタシはこんな大きくて立派な牡蠣を初めて見ました! もちろん、お味はミルキー感たっぷりで美味しかったです!オススメです!

I asked if it was okay without a reservation, and they let me be the first to fill out the order form inside the store😃 After about 40 minutes, I was beckoned to enter the store! Apparently it's ready so I can eat it before it gets busy 😳 Aligataya Ordered grilled oysters, fried oyster set meal, raw oysters and 2 non-alcoholic drinks. Grilled oysters can be grilled for 3 minutes, then turned over and grilled for another 3 minutes. The oysters this time were smaller, half the size of the last time 😓 From 11 o'clock, customers with reservations started coming in, and more and more people came. I finished eating at 11:15 and was able to pay with VISA. I was happy to be able to buy some oysters as a souvenir on the way home. When I came here two years ago, I arrived at 11 o'clock, waited for over two hours, and was told that the oyster sales were fully booked and I wouldn't be able to buy them for a while. I'm glad I came early this time and was able to eat right away. (Translated by Google) Visited 2022.9.19 11:00. It was just delicious! I ordered the oyster course, fried shrimp set meal, and large raw rock oysters. Raw rock oysters are extremely large, milky and very filling! There is no smell at all. It was a size and taste that I would never be able to see or eat locally. Grilled oysters are also baked for 9 minutes while measuring with an hourglass. Large, plump oysters. It would have been better if we could have had beer. Although it was disappointing, it was still an unforgettable lunch. Be careful not to get burned when opening the shells of grilled oysters. (Translated by Google) I'm not particularly fond of raw oysters, but I tried them anyway and my view of the world of raw oysters has changed. I really liked the tartar sauce that came with the fried shrimp set meal and wished they sold it as a souvenir! The customers seemed to be mostly tourists, and two young women simply ate one raw oyster each and left, making it the kind of restaurant you could drop in to casually.
