Lanzhou

Lanzhou is the capital city of northwest China's Gansu province. The Waterwheel Expo Garden and Yellow River Mother Sculpture are on the south bank of the Yellow River. The Gansu Provincial Museum displays artifacts from the area’s Silk Road past. Wuquanshan Park has a relaxed vibe and ancient temples. Across the Zhongshan Bridge, the White Pagoda sits atop a mountain in Baitashan Park.

History Museums
The Gansu Provincial Museum offers a fascinating journey through the history and culture of the Gansu province, featuring a diverse collection of ancient artifacts, including relics from the Silk Road, jade carvings, Buddhist art, and prehistoric fossils. Despite its size, this museum is a treasure trove for history enthusiasts. One of its prized possessions is the renowned Gansu Flying Horse. The museum's exhibits provide insight into the significance of Gansu in relation to the Silk Road.
The provincial level museum that has many national treasury. The very iconic one is the Galloping Horse Treading on a Flying Swallow which was once the logo of China national tourist bureau. For most people completing the full tour will take three hours at least but definitely worth that time. Relics and antiques prove the history of Chinese culture back to 8000 years ago. Egypt is just the little brother compared to China history. The only thing inconvenient for foreigners is you must reserve a ticket online in advance. Try to the ticket box and get a paper ticket by showing passport if you are unable to make the reservation.

Lovely museum with lots of amazing artefacts. Loved seeing the horse-stepping-on-a-swallow bronze statue, but a bit of a shame that it was a replica and not the real thing - as with many of the treasures. Still worth your time it you’re in Lanzhou. The history is beautiful and fascinating.

Free. Bring passport to be recorded. Opposite the big Lanzhou Center shopping mall. Most important exhibits are in the 2nd Floor - Silk Road History/ Buddhist Grottoes and Paleontological Section (Fossils)

This museum has a lot of priceless treasures, which is definitely the best way for you to understand the whole Gansu Province. Although tickets are not required, there may be a charge for audio guide equipment.

Go early in the morning do not need tickets
Peter C — Google review
You need a Chinese phone number for ticket reservation. Highly disappointed as we where very hyped to see it. The only Chinese museum we couldn’t get in.
Tymoteusz R — Google review
FOREIGNERS BE AWARE! Really inconvenient for foreigners. It’s required to have an appointment on WeChat and a Chinese phone number. Waiting in line for hours just for them to tell us that. Not sure how the exhibits are because we were never allowed entry!
Anthony Z — Google review
The muzium entry is free, good to spend time to understand china history...

Sights & Landmarks
Zhongshan Bridge, also known as the Yellow River Iron Bridge, is a significant landmark in Lanzhou. This bridge, with its five steel arches, was constructed in 1909 and served as the city's first stable connection over the Yellow River. It stands as a testament to the impressive engineering capabilities of that era. Although it is no longer open to traffic, it remains a must-see attraction in Lanzhou.
Beautiful old historic bridge - the first to cross the Yellow River. Especially pretty and well lit at night. Lots of people and activity to see there too, and a great view of the White Pagoda on the hill.
Jamie B — Google review
An old bridge located in a vital area and considered one of the most important landmarks of the city due to its antiquity. In the evening, it looks amazing and has attractive lighting. It connects the two sides of the Yellow River to the mountain, where you will find very beautiful historical landmarks and temples.

After visiting the WaterWheel Garden , we proceed to Zhongshan Bridge of the Yellow River, so called commonly as the Yellow River Steel Bridge. This Steel Bridge was constructed of mild steel produced and shipped from Germany about the early 1900, so it is more than 100 years old. Steel connections/joints were by hot rivets. There are lots of tourists taking pictures, it is very crowded. Not very easy to get a close up pictures , could not take a walk on whole bridge, however it is worth the time spent to be able to view this First Permanent Bridge build over the Yellow River.
Susan C — Google review
Once called the Lanzhou Yellow River built in 1909. To memorize Mr Sun Yat-sen this bridge was renamed as Zhongshan River and remain till now. It’s the first iron bridge in China history and now is a famous iconic spot. Local people also take a walk everyday. Day and night have different views and feelings. Must go if you visited Lanzhou.
Leo Z — Google review
More than 100 years old steel bridge and still functioning.. Although it costly build by German in 1907 with 30000 silver coins ..

With the Baitashan park as the backdrop, the whole area is absolutely beautiful! It is definitely one of the cultural and social hotspots of Lan Zhou city, seeing that there was a constant crowd there. The bridge also has a historical significance. Apparently the first permanent bridge crossing the Yellow River.
Kitt W — Google review
Built in 1909, is the first permanent bridge over the Yellow River. Despite its age, it remains a vital link and cultural landmark. At night, it's beautifully illuminated, offering stunning views. A must-see for visitors!

Sacred & Religious Sites
The Xiguan Mosque is a splendid place of worship that stands out from other mosques in China due to its contemporary design, which deviates from the traditional Chinese architectural style. This magnificent religious site seamlessly blends modern elements with authentic Chinese cultural influences. The mosque boasts an exquisite and captivating architecture, complemented by a serene and pleasant environment. Its breathtaking beauty is truly something to behold, leaving visitors in awe of its grandeur and unique charm.
Lovely mosque, recently modernised which is a shame, but it’s still a beautiful building. The attendees were welcoming and helpful, giving me a “salaam alaikum” or “nihao”, and showing me where I could visit as a tourist and where I should respectfully stay away from. My wife covered her hair and was invited into the women’s section.
Jamie B — Google review
During my visit to Xiguan Mosque in Lanzhou, I was intrigued by its modern architectural design. Situated in the bustling Xiguan neighborhood, this mosque stands out with its contemporary style, blending traditional Islamic elements with modern aesthetics. The mosque serves as a cultural and spiritual hub for Lanzhou's Muslim community, offering a tranquil space for prayer and reflection amidst the city's dynamic atmosphere. Exploring Xiguan Mosque was a unique experience, showcasing Lanzhou's embrace of both tradition and innovation in its architectural landscape.

Waterwheel Expo Garden, situated on Binhe East Road, was constructed by Duan Xu during the Ming Dynasty to irrigate the fields along the Yellow River in ancient Lanzhou City. Visitors are encouraged to explore the park at night when the beautiful lights and pleasant temperatures make for a delightful stroll. The functioning water wheels add an extra element of charm to the experience. Families with children will find it a fun and picturesque place to visit, while others appreciate its beauty and historical significance.
I strongly recommend going to this park at night. The lights are pretty at night and the temperature is perfect for walking around. Water wheels here actually turn and move.
