Gwangju

Gwangju is a city in the southwest corner of South Korea. It’s known for a pro-democracy uprising in 1980. The event is commemorated by the 5·18 Memorial Park, with tree-lined paths and dramatic bronze sculptures, and the 5·18 National Cemetery. East, the craggy Mudeungsan Mountain National Park has striking rock formations. In the foothills, the rebuilt 6th-century Jeungsimsa Temple has a Silla-era stone pagoda.

Specialty Museums
Gwangju National Museum, established in 1978, aims to advance cultural development and preserve historically significant artifacts from the Gwangju and Jeollanam-do regions. With over 130,000 objects, it offers educational activities and serves as a cultural destination for tourists and residents. The museum's architecture resembles a traditional palace and houses artifacts from South Jeolla Province, including prehistoric items dating back 66,000 years.
Worth visiting if you’re into Buddhist art or ceramics. A fair bit of history about the surrounding area and historical power struggles. Also some information on prehistory of the area. The museum is small and definitely has a more academic/teaching feel than entertaining, so probably better for older visitors. Free entry. Nice park like grounds to walk around.
Daryl S — Google review
Beautiful place, learning about history of Gwangju and Korea. Helpful staff. Cheerful kindergarten and maybe high school attendance...
Mohammad M — Google review
A well documented museum showcasing historical findings of jeolla region during three kingdom period.
Tapabrata D — Google review
Great way to spend a couple of hours. The burial pods are neat. It is free to enter.
Doctor M — Google review
This museum is free and have a lot of good pieces of art. Most of it is ceramic work, some historic pieces and some strange things. You can visit in one hour and combine with other museum like the beautiful museum of art of the folk museum (didnt do it).
Francois F — Google review
At the Gwangju National Museum, you can see beautiful Bronze Age artifacts from Korea. Including the bell with 8-thumbs, it is enough to enjoy the essence of the Korean Peninsula's Bronze Age culture. The Gwangju National Museum is directly accessible from the highway IC, so it has excellent accessibility and free admission. Exhibits are arranged systematically and according to historical flow, so you can see the history of the Korean Peninsula at a glance.
Ernest K — Google review
Unfortunately when I visit there, they only open for the 2nd floor. So, not much to see. But, still you can see old paintings from some famous historical korean painters. And the park is also clean and nice.
Papip Y — Google review
Gwangju National Museum was established in the late 1970's. The museum consists of many historical artifacts and artworks regarding buddhism and earthenware from sinan, Goryeo, silla, Bajae and Jaseon dynasties. The museum was developed to promote the prehistoric culture in Korea. Pets are not allowed at this place. There is no entry fee for this museum. And parking facility is also free. The museum closes on government holidays.

Amusement park
Water & Amusement Parks
Theme Parks
Gwangju Family Land, also known as Uchi Park, is a popular amusement park located in the Buk-Gu district of Gwangju. Spanning 290 acres, this family-friendly destination offers a variety of attractions suitable for younger children and families. Visitors can enjoy classic amusement park rides such as the Ferris wheel, carousels, and a swinging Viking ship. For thrill-seekers, there's a rollercoaster with two inversions.
We love this place to visit 😊 ❤️ and we are going every year for my kids
Vasundhara D — Google review
Family Land is the biggest outdoor and amusement park in Gwangju. During weekends is crowded and there is a lot of waiting time for attractions. The Zoo is better than it was but there is much place for improvement especially when it comes to animals habitats. Some of them are living in horbile cages or on a only cement environment. I was quite disappointed.
Melline G — Google review
Basic facilities. Good for kids under 14. Not too crowded even on s Saturday. It can be boring for kids over 14. Nothing for Adult travellers. Good for young families. There is a zoo. Can spend a whole day. Good vibes.
Shiyanga R — Google review
Decent place for a family, but not a perfect spot for a little kid. I wish the entrance fee was a little cheaper as they don’t really have any rides. There are about 3-4 rides you can ride with younger kids (less than 36 months old).
Brian C — Google review

Nice places to visit during Winter
Chikita E — Google review
Took the kids to Family Land last week and visited the zoo as well. The amusement park was fun for the kids and they enjoyed it, thus the 2 stars. The wait was minimal since we went on a weekday. The zoo on the other hand needs to be shut down. The animal's living conditions are horrendous and they live in the tiniest enclosures. I saw one small enclosure with way too many birds in it. The elephants have no room to run and seemed stressed. The white fox walked toward us very slowly like something was wrong with him and his fur was dirty, matted, and missing in spots. We saw a meercat that couldn't put any weight on one of it's front legs. I can't remember the name of the animals next to the meercats, but one of those animals was dragging it's hind legs. I left that zoo feeling so sad for the animals living there. DO BETTER OR SEND THEM SOMEWHERE THEY WILL BE CARED FOR!
Sharon K — Google review
Decent rides, but the park as a whole is a bit old. Some of the rides were closed for repairs and a few actually had to stop while we were there. It's not bad, but the adjacent Zoo is definitely better. It's shaded and is great little park with a decent zoo.

Traditional market
Sights & Landmarks
1913 Songjeong Station Market, situated across from Gwangju Songjeong Station, has undergone a revival in recent years. The historic market street was given a retro makeover and now features trendy indie stores, eateries offering tempura, ramen, and rice cakes, as well as long-established businesses selling groceries. The market boasts an eclectic mix of cafes, pop-up stores, and specialty food shops alongside traditional vendors.
Such a nice area to have a stroll and have some local food, snacks or drinks! It really had the old-fashioned vibe which I personally loved 🩷😊
Karolina P — Google review
Hate to see the market kind of dead...not sure whether it is due to political turmoil or just out of date??? Nothing to see or street foods.
Danny K — Google review
A historic old market street with old shops selling food. Some converted to more modern cafes, while others retain their old fashion charm. Worth a visit to soak in the atmosphere and pick on some street snacks. Street parking and parking lot available nearby.
Mihwa L — Google review
They're trying their best. Some good stores and street food. The brewery was a nice surprise and really the only place besides the German restaurant that was attracting crowds.
Chris D — Google review
It's really pretty and maybe it was more lively pre-covid times but there wasn't much to do there when I went. I did enjoy the photo booth but that's all there was.
Fatema A — Google review
Interesting place. Many things to see and eat around this area
Melline G — Google review
I visited during the day and most of all the shops were closed. I think the place comes to life at night time. It's a nice place to stroll through, especially if you need to kill some time before catching your next train.
Jason C — Google review
It was a little difficult to find, but once we did, it was awesome! Go as it's getting dark and the street comes alive with a trendy yet old-school, retro feel. It's a great place to dress in old-fashioned school uniforms or take some black and white photos. Lots of yummy places to stop and eat street food as well. It's a blast!

This modern facility serves as a dynamic platform for international artistic exchange, showcasing an array of music and dance performances, contemporary art exhibitions, film screenings, workshops, and festivals that celebrate both Gwangju's rich heritage and broader Asian culture.
Huge Asian culture center. Clean and specious. Friends staff and unique atmosphere.

Lovely exhibits and very informative. Definitely worth stopping by when touring Gwangju.
Oded R — Google review
Located in the heart of old Gwangju downtown, and directly behind the Old Provincial Office, very important landmark and historical site. Easy access using subway or bus, ample parking space and spacious area for exhibitions, performances and events. We recently went to a exhibition featuring South East Asia. Exhibits are displayed beautifully with abundant information, although not all in English. The library was exceptionally well put, looks like an airport if you ask me! The children section has a playground but unfortunately only for small kids (before elementary school age) and works through reservation system. There is a restaurant but sorry to say the price is ridiculously expensive. Bring your own lunch and eat at the designated area or eat outside and come back. Staff are friendly and knowledgeable. You can make use of the guide tour to visit the important area. All in all very nice place to visit.
Karina P — Google review
ACC is a huge complex. It organises every event from International to National. Every weekends it organizes small to big events depends upon occassion. Every 6 month it organizes International food and cultural events. This place is very beautiful and peaceful. Its very near to down town area. The 5.18 memorial museum is located near to this place. This place also include a small rose garden where you can spent peaceful time.

Indian restaurant
First Nepal “Curry Story” is a beloved gem nestled in the vibrant shopping district of downtown Gwangju, where it has been delighting patrons for over 11 years. This charming eatery specializes in Indian, Asian, and Nepali dishes that are both fresh and affordable. The menu boasts an array of options, including standout favorites like palak paneer and alu gobi, alongside enticing non-curry selections such as biryani and tandoori chicken.
I know it is labeled as "curry story" nowadays, but I have to say that the non-curry items like Biryani and Tandoori were the stars. The curries were also okay. They have a variety of naan choicew like Keema Naan and an apple naan that was subtle yet very tasty. Good experience and price!
Anjee D — Google review
This restaurant has been serving of Gwangju for over 11 years (probably longer). I love the palaak paneer, alu gobi, alu paratha especially, but everything else I've tried has been good. Well, the tandoori chicken tends to be a bit dry, however. Vegetarian options, of course, will make this a good spot for people with duetary restrictions. The ambiance is generally good, though its a small space and can feel cramped and noisy when many tables are full. English and Korean in the menues, there are descriptions and some photos

I have visited FIRST NEPAL multiple times. Each time I visited with a hope that may be last time I was unlucky to have bad preparation. Out of 7 times I was satisfied only once. If anyone is looking for recommendations for dish I would say SAMOSA and dal fry. Nan is okay. Anything else I could not like so far. I have tried pakora, paneer, chicken and mutton related preparations. Mutton I found worse among them. Kababs are dry too. However I like their hospitality, ambience ( songs take me back to something known), they also used to give Lassi (last 2 times they did not provide). I will keep going their with a hope of getting a good meal their and if I get lucky I will update you all. Sorry FIRST NEPAL for not being able to post a positive review. Hope this change soon.
Tapabrata D — Google review
I have been eating here since last two years. The one and only famous and affordable Indian restaurant in Gwangju. The food is always fresh. They serves extremely delicious Indian, asian and nepali food with excellent menus and lots of different alternatives. It is located in the bustling shopping area of downtown. The owner as well as staff is very kind and friendly, and provides an excellent service. The restaurant starts at 11.00 am and closes at 10.00 pm. There could be special menus for the lunch and set menus too, which could be beneficial for multiple peoples. I would like to recommend this restaurant if you are in gwangju.

This is a small but cosy little restaurant. Indian or Nepalese, not sure. The nan bread was tasty a little bit too dry. The samosa was crispy and hot. The rice was slightly warm. The curry dishes were too thick and creamy. Not a lot of meat in the dishes. These dishes are not authentic but I guess it will do, if you are desperately in need of curry.

"The First Alleyway" is a must-visit spot, especially if you're new to poutine. The menu offers a variety of tempting poutines, but the traditional one with its fantastic gravy, stringy cheese, and crispy fries is a standout. On Wednesdays, they offer deliciously cooked wings at an unbeatable price. This downtown gem also serves up delectable pizza, burgers, and fish & chips.
This place is a must try. Especially if you have never had poutine before. They have a decent selection of different poutines and they all sounded amazing. I stuck with the traditional and the gravy was awesome, the cheese was super stringy and the fries were perfectly crispy. We also went on a Wednesday for 500₩ wings. The wings were delicious, crispy and perfectly cooked. Definitely try them out.

Nice place for pizza, sandwich and beer. My native English teacher recommended this place. I became curious about it. And I visited this restaurant with my family. When I visited it first, I had a difficulty finding this restaurant. Half of diners are always expats. Especially, I recommend pizza at this restaurant. It was tasty.

The food options and atmosphere are great! A lot of foreigners come here for more authentic north american food because sometimes you want a pizza that tastes like pizza from home or poutine that can't be found most places.

Indian restaurant
Raj Indian Restaurant, Chonnam Univ. branch is a popular spot for those craving Indian cuisine in Gwangju. Located conveniently behind the main university stop, it offers comfortable seating for around 30 guests on the ground floor and serves as an ideal location for group outings with friends. The staff, predominantly Nepali, provides friendly service and can converse fluently in English. The menu boasts a wide variety of dishes at reasonable rates, making it an attractive option for students despite slightly higher prices.
It's really nice restaurant ! Owner and staff are really well mannered. If you would like to have some indian food in your budget, I would recommend you to visit this place. Specially if you are vegetarian or have halal restrictions, this place has many delecious food options for you.
Shikha D — Google review
Though I was a student for 1 yr in the Chonam Univ,Gwangju, never knew an Indian rest exists and Morean students seem to like the Indian dishes, though prepare a little less ' mevayo '( spicy). Location of Raj rest is ideal, just behind the main stop of the univ. Comfortable sitting for 30 odd guests on the grd fl,with provision to drink soju a d beer. The staff is Nepali, fought the owner is a Korean. A wide variety of menu and rates are also reasonable, though on the higher side for the students. We 3 of us ( one of us from Phillipines),ordered 4 tandoori roties, ooghobi, daal tanka and mutton biryani for the Phillipini. All th dishes were tasty, esp the daal and the Biryani was topped with dry fruits.Green salad and sweet Lassi was compli.entary and total bill came to 60 k Won.We could finish the stuff, sogot it packed. The 2 cooks and the lone lady waitress ,were cheerful and no demand for tip ( not a practice in korea). The ambience of rest. is OK,with a big pic of the Tajmahal. Recommended to have a break from daily layman( noodles) and baap(rice).

Tteokgalbi restaurant
Korean restaurant
Songjeong Tteokgalbi is a local specialty near the Songjeong-ri subway station, featuring minced beef ribs made into patties and served in the typical Korean barbecue style. Situated on Galbi Street near Songjeong Market and Seongjeong subway station, it offers delicious food and bone soup. The restaurant is spacious, clean, and provides great service with attentive staff.
Songjeong Tteokgalbi is phenomenal. The short ribs were so tender and delicious they melted in my mouth. The cook is famous and has been on TV shows. Also, she has won awards for her food. The cook was very kind. Everyone at this restaurant was kind. Even though my Korean is limited, we were able to understand each other and communicate. I loved the food so much here that I will try and talk my friend into coming back tomorrow. If you are traveling in Gwangju, South Korea, put this restaurant on your list.

Delicious food cooked by sweet mom age ladies! You also get a free digestive drink (yogurt) and ice cream when you leave! The meat patties were delicious and served with so many sides and ssam. And the bibimbap was served with marinated rice instead of white rice like usual.

The restaurant is situated on the Galbi Streen near the Songjeong Market and the Seongjeong subway station. Though an entire street is packed with galbi restaurants Songwon Tteokgalbi is my favorite.
