Kozhikode

Kozhikode is a coastal city in the south Indian state of Kerala. It was a significant spice trade center and is close to Kappad Beach, where Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama landed in 1498. The central Kozhikode Beach, overlooked by an old lighthouse, is a popular spot for watching the sunset. Inland, tree-lined Mananchira Square, with its musical fountain, surrounds the massive Mananchira Tank, an artificial pond.

Kozhikode Beach is a bustling city beach in Kerala, known for its extensive sandy shores and vibrant atmosphere. Visitors can enjoy fresh seafood from the nearby shacks, while children can have fun at the playground or explore the aquarium. The area is also famous for its Malabar food delicacies, including Kozhikode Biriyani and street food.
Kozhikode Beach is an absolute gem on the Malabar Coast! The serene atmosphere, golden sands, and stunning sunsets make it a perfect getaway. The gentle breeze, the sound of waves, and the local snacks like bhajis and ice gola add to its charm. It’s clean, spacious, and ideal for families, evening walks, or simply relaxing by the sea. Watching the sky turn orange at dusk is magical. A must-visit destination for peace, beauty, and a true coastal vibe.

Beautiful and Peaceful Beach! Kozhikode Beach is one of the most relaxing spots in the city. The sunset view here is just magical — golden sky, gentle breeze, and the sound of waves make it a perfect place to unwind after a busy day. There are plenty of food stalls nearby serving delicious local snacks like kallummakkaya, ice orathi, and bajji. The walkway is clean, and you can also enjoy a calm evening stroll with friends or family. A must-visit place if you’re in Calicut! ❤️
Nithin S — Google review
Kozhikode Beach is truly a wonderful place to visit, offering a vibrant atmosphere and plenty of food stalls serving a variety of delicious local dishes. The views are beautiful, and the lively surroundings make it a great spot for families, friends, and tourists. However, the cleanliness of the surrounding areas could be improved. Some shops tend to dispose of waste water and garbage carelessly, which affects the overall experience. Additionally, toilet facilities are quite limited, especially considering the large number of visitors the beach attracts. Overall, Kozhikode Beach is a great destination with amazing food options, but better waste management and improved sanitation facilities would make it even more enjoyable.
Roopesh K — Google review
Our visit was on a rainy and windy afternoon so we could not spend much time. However we have been to the beach at different times and spend time. We enjoy the gigantic waves and the cool breeze. It is a beautiful beach and keep it clean as some areas were not. Sunsets and sunrise are amazing 🤩

Must-Visit Spot in Kozhikode! Visited Kozhikode Beach recently — it’s a wonderful experience! The morning is peaceful and calm with very few crowds, perfect for a relaxing walk. In the evening, it gets quite crowded, but the lively atmosphere adds to the charm. The beach is moderately maintained and suitable for everyone — families, friends, or solo visitors. Loved the newly installed shops, which are clean and hygienic. A great spot to enjoy the sea breeze and local vibes! 🌊✨
Afsal P — Google review
I visited Kozhikode Beach early in the morning around 6 a.m. The place was full of life...many people were out for exercise, walking, sitting, and relaxing. Near the park area, some were practicing martial arts, others were playing football, and quite a few were just enjoying watching the activities. The atmosphere is vibrant and it’s a good spot to spend time. However, the beach is not at all hygienic. It is quite polluted, lacks proper walking paths, and is poorly maintained. With better cleanliness and care, Kozhikode Beach could truly become an excellent attraction for locals and visitors alike.
Dr. N — Google review
It is one among the most beautiful, peaceful, and cleanest beaches in Kerala, while you are in the city you must visit the beach in the evening, you can enjoy a wide variety of Kozhikode's flavour and enjoy the waves. It is maintained well by the corporation and vibe at the beach is mesmerising. Also the local food available in the small shops around the beach is also flavourful.

Calicut Beach, also known as Kozhikode Beach, is one of the most popular and scenic coastal attractions in Kerala. Located along the Arabian Sea, it is known for its wide shoreline, gentle waves, and a peaceful atmosphere that attracts both locals and tourists. The beach is especially famous for its stunning sunsets, where the sky turns shades of orange and pink, creating a beautiful view. One of the unique features of Calicut Beach is the presence of the old wooden piers that extend into the sea. Though no longer in use, these broken pillars add a historic charm and make the beach a favourite spot for photography. The lighthouse and The Lion’s Park, located nearby, offer additional attractions for families and children. The beach area is also well known for its vibrant street food culture. Visitors can enjoy local delicacies such as Kallummakkaya (mussels), ice-cream, and bhajis sold by vendors along the walkway. Calicut Beach has great cultural importance too, as it is close to key landmarks in the city and often hosts public events and celebrations.

Nestled amidst virgin mangrove forests and backwaters, Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary is a haven for nature enthusiasts. It hosts a diverse range of bird species, including migratory birds like terns, sandpipers, and herons that travel from their northern breeding grounds to the sanctuary during winter. Visitors can enjoy tranquil boat cruises along the mangrove-lined channels in search of rare and exotic bird species.
Visited Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary last week. It’s a peaceful and scenic place surrounded by backwaters and mangroves, offering a calm escape from the city. Although we didn’t spot many birds since the migration season starts around November (as the locals mentioned), it was still a relaxing experience walking around and enjoying the natural beauty. Would love to visit again during the migration months to see the sanctuary in its full glory. A good spot for nature lovers, photographers, and anyone who enjoys quiet surroundings.
Sahal Z — Google review
It is nice to visit the place. The 1 hour boat ride takes you through the interiors of Kandal kadu (mangroves forest). They charge you 1000/- ruppees for the manually operated seating boat with roof. You can enjoy seafood lunch also. Experience the natural scenic beauty of the forest and the back water. The main attraction is the birds in the small islands beside the water. The best time to spot birds are from mid of November.
Nikhil M — Google review
One if the most beautiful boating places in Kozhikode. The migratory birds normally arrives from November and stays till March. The mangrove forest is lush green and the boating gives such a refreshing exoerience. Rs 1000/- is the rates per hour for boating and a boat can carry maximum 10 persons. Apart from boating, there is nothing else, still they charge 20/- Rupees, even if you don"t want to do boating. So if you are not planning for boating, do not buy entry tickets.

Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary is a serene paradise for nature and bird lovers, located near Kozhikode in Kerala. Spread across beautiful mangrove forests and river islands, it attracts hundreds of migratory birds every season, including terns, gulls, herons, and sandpipers. The calm backwaters and scenic landscape make it a perfect spot for photography and peaceful boat rides. Though facilities are basic, the natural beauty and abundance of birdlife make it truly special. Visiting Kadalundi offers a refreshing escape into nature’s tranquility, especially during early mornings when the sanctuary comes alive with chirping and colors.

Entry price is 20₹ for each person. Boat is available for 1000 per hour and 1500 for 2 hours. Recommend going early in the morning since it gets really hot in day. Can travel to and fro using local trains from Calicut. The train is 60₹ round trip. Nice place to see birds and mangrove forest from very near.

I recently visited the Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary, and it was a truly peaceful and scenic experience. Surrounded by serene backwaters and lush mangroves, the sanctuary offers a calm and refreshing escape from the city’s hustle and bustle. Although we didn’t spot many birds during our visit — as the locals mentioned, the main migration season begins around November — the tranquil atmosphere and natural beauty made it well worth the trip. It’s an ideal spot for nature lovers, photographers, and anyone who enjoys spending time in quiet, picturesque surroundings. Even without the peak bird activity, the sanctuary’s charm and soothing environment make it a wonderful place to relax and reconnect with nature.

Paragon Restaurant in Kozhikode is renowned for its exceptional dining experience, excelling in food taste, service quality, and overall ambiance. It has been acclaimed as India's best restaurant for coastal cuisine and consistently ranks among the top dining spots in Dubai. The restaurant's spacious parking adds to its appeal. Situated near Kannur Road, it is a popular choice among travelers visiting Kozhikode.
Although extremely popular even when I lived in the city 25 years back, Paragon's popularity rocketed after being nominated in the top ten restaurants by an European food magazine. We reached there around 1.30 & had to wait for nearly 40 minutes before getting a table, which we gladly did. There is a robust queue system where you register your name, have to wait in the designated waiting area with decent number of seats & magazines to read. When your turn comes, your name is read out on the PA system and you are escorted to the table in no time. Although the restaurant is always crowded, the ambience is good and the service excellent. The food was excellent - chicken Biryani, cherulli fried chicken, prawns fry and fish fry. It was a great dining experience, as always...

The best restaurant. Went here after reading alot of reviews. Waited for almost 70 minutes. But all the wait was worth it. The Chettinad Chicken was tasty. It’s famous for Biryani but one can debate about it , decent taste though. All these amazing dishes and ending up paying less than 250/300 per person!!! That’s the reason people do wait here for longer time. Super tasty and super affordable.
Saurabh A — Google review
So I had to give this a try, ordered the chicken biryani.. the taste what I felt was blunt. So I had to add up the Chutney to make it spicy. But gave me a different taste which I had never tasted before. So I kind of liked it. The chicken was well cooked and soft. The cost for a biryani was Rs.230, which i felt was decent enough. The parota was looking very nice as the person opposite had ordered that along with Chicken stew but I was already full so couldnt order that. There are hell lot of options that one can try. So you try other dishes..

Had a great experience at Paragon Restaurant Calicut. Tried nool porotta, appam, butter chicken, chicken fry, fish mango curry, and mutton curry – everything was delicious with authentic flavors. A must-visit place for good food lovers.

Paragon Restaurant is iconic for a reason. I personally liked their dessert (tender coconut pudding), the texture, the sweet balance, too good! Chicken Biryani is 10/10. Highly recommend this place. Apart from the waiting time, it's all top notch.

Highest rated restaurant in Kozhikode. Very busy. Waiting time will be more than 20 mins and in peak noon time it will be more than 30 mins. It's like the entire city wants to eat at this restaurant. When we tried the food we knew why. Why tried nool parota , beef curry , prawns fry(you can skip this) the prawns come with the entire shell. Rest all was perfect. Beef briyani is the best. Tender coconut payisam is a must try dessert.

⭐ 3.8/5 Visited Paragon Restaurant, Kozhikode with my family after hearing a lot of hype. Tried their Lagoon Chicken Dum Biriyani — it was good, but not as amazing as people say. We had to wait almost 1 hour for a table even after giving our name at the counter. Once seated, the service was fast and polite. Prices are on the higher side, and parking is quite difficult near the restaurant. Overall, good food and nice service, but a bit overhyped in my opinion.

Everything that we ordered was lip smacking. The leghorn chicken biriyani was to die for. We also ordered chicken 65 and beef roast. Everything was 10/10.

Rahmath Hotel, a modest Keralan establishment established in 1961, has gained popularity for its delectable biryani and refreshing milk sarbath. While it may appear to be just another railway hotel frequented by locals for budget-friendly meals, a closer look reveals its status as a beloved biryani destination in Kozhikode.
Yet another Biriyani makes it into my favourites. Honestly I don’t think you can find better biriyani than this (maybe the Biriyani from Bombay hotel is a tight contender) The rice was perfect and so was the beef. The amount of masala was ample as it is supposed to be. Excellent all over.

Kerala Biryani Restaurant offers an authentic taste of traditional Malabar cuisine that truly stands out. The biriyani here is rich in flavor, perfectly balanced with aromatic spices, tender meat, and fragrant rice cooked to perfection. Each bite reminds you of the essence of Kerala’s food culture — warm, flavorful, and satisfying. The ambiance is cozy and welcoming, with friendly staff who ensure quick service and great hospitality. The portion sizes are generous and worth the price. Whether you try the chicken, mutton, or fish biriyani, every dish bursts with genuine Kerala flavors. A must-visit for anyone craving real South Indian biriyani!

Crowd dining. Normal seating and avarage ambience. Food just ok. Avarage taste. Bikers can park in front of the hotel. Limited parking space. Waiter service was good. #food #calicut

We bought 1. chicken Biriyani, 1. Fried Kaada Biriyani 2 mutton Biriyani. Chicken 65 as appetizer. Biriyani didn’t meet the expectations. Service was cold.( I was eating Biriyani from Rehmath almost 30 plus years) We appreciate the management for offering free auto rickshaw for transport from parking lot to restaurant.
Manju P — Google review
I recently tried the Chicken Biryani from Kozhikode Biryani, and it was an absolute delight! The aroma itself took me straight to Kerala rich, spicy, and perfectly balanced. The rice was fluffy and flavorful, each grain infused with the essence of ghee, fried onions, and the signature Kozhikodan masala blend. The chicken pieces were tender and well-marinated, cooked just right so that every bite had a burst of spice without being too oily. The fried onions and cashews on top added the perfect crunch, and the side of raita and pickle complemented it beautifully. What I loved most was the authentic Malabar touch it’s not your usual heavy biryani; it’s aromatic, light, and deeply satisfying. You can really taste the difference in the spices and the care put into each layer. If you’re a biryani lover or just curious to taste the real Kozhikode flavor, this one is a must try. Truly one of the best Chicken Biryanis I’ve had outside Kerala!

I had been twice to this place in a day..! My taste buds couldnt resist the amazing taste. 1st I had mutton roast with some parota. Really it was so nice the mutton was almost melting like butter so soft and tender and well cooked. The parota was also tasting very good and soft. It costed me Rs.260 Then went again for lunch and tried their mutton biryani. The quantity was huge, there was good pieces and it was also well cooked. The taste was little blunt it was typical Thalassery biryani. It was priced at Rs.336. There are wide varieties of food available chicken, fish, mutton, beef also. I have heard many people telling beef biryani is the best there.. as I don't eat didnt try that may others can give it a try.
Thejus J — Google review
I recently visited Rahmath Hotel and tried their Mutton Biryani — it was absolutely delicious! The mutton was tender and flavorful, and the rice was perfectly cooked with just the right blend of spices. The portion was generous, and it felt like a truly authentic and hearty meal. The service was quick, and the staff was polite. The place is clean and has a simple, no-fuss vibe, which adds to the overall experience. If you’re craving a tasty and satisfying Mutton Biryani, I highly recommend Rahmath Hotel. Will definitely be coming back!
Murad L — Google review
Tried the beef and mutton biryani, both were delicious and worth the visit. The pricing is quite reasonable for the quality and quantity offered. The only drawback is that the hotel is located in a busy area, which makes parking and dining a bit difficult during the day. A good tip is to go at night when the rush is less and parking is easily available. Overall, a must-try spot for biryani lovers.

Zain's Hotel in Kozhikode is a must-visit for those craving authentic Mappila cuisine. Run by Zainabi Noor, it's known for its signature Arikadduka - mussels stuffed with mildly spiced rice, steamed and fried. Located near Convent Cross Road, behind the Fire Station, this spot is perfect for enjoying Kozhikodian Biryani dishes or having snacks and coffee with friends.
If you're looking for an authentic and delicious Iftar experience in Kozhikode, look no further than Zain's Hotel! I recently had the pleasure of trying their special Iftar snacks, and wow, they did not disappoint. The flavors of their Malabar cuisine were simply incredible. From the perfectly fried Sundari Petti to the savory Kallummakkaya, everything was cooked to perfection. The quality and taste were truly exceptional. Zain's Hotel has definitely earned its reputation for serving some of the best Malabar food.

Visited in May 2025: We visited in May 2025 (two people) after reading about this place in the "Rough Guide India." We decided to try it out and were pleased to recommend it. We shared a generous portion of delicious chicken biryani, ghee rice, and chicken masala, followed by refreshing lemon teas and warm, fresh almond cakes. The chicken biryani was a standout! Next time, I'll be trying the mutton biryani. The restaurant offers both indoor and covered outdoor seating on the terrace (fan, no AC). The service was good, and despite the menu being difficult to read, one of the owners provided helpful recommendations. Overall, an excellent experience and highly recommended. We'll definitely return.

Me and my friends were looking out a spot for good vibes and food. It was then that I remembered this legacy. The below are the points I noticed: 1. Food was great. 2. Have attached the pictures. 3. Pricing felt really economical. 4. The place had great vibe. 5. Have a lot of small eateries that can fill your heart at the beginning. 6. Servicemen were really patient. 7. The owner or kin of owner were really friendly. 8. Parking could be a trouble. 9. You have the beach nearby. 10. Porotta, pathri was were good. 11. Beef items vere nice. Chicken curry was good. 12. We did not like the beef biriyani. Rice felt too off. 13. Curry were super nice. 14. Mint lemon was awesome. Would defenitely visit again.

I visited this place many years ago and had a good experience enjoying delicious food. However, after a long gap, I visited twice over two weekends, and unfortunately, the experience was below average. On our most recent visit, we had snacks with tea in the evening. The snacks, including Unnakkaya, cutlet, and chicken 64, were average at best, with some falling below expectations. Sadly, the chicken 64 was particularly disappointing. The service also left much to be desired, making the overall experience underwhelming.

We visited this place for Lunch. The place is quietly outskirts but conveniently located (near to Calicut beach) with ample parking space on road sides. Absolutely loved the food!! Everything was spot on. The only drawback is that it’s almost always full, so you’ll probably have to wait a bit to get a table. But trust me, it’s worth it—the spinach dip fries are insanely good, super crispy, and the fish is unbelievably fresh. Totally enjoyed the whole experience!

We had a great dining experience at Paragon Restaurant with a group of 17. We booked in advance, and the restaurant delivered. The menu offered a wide range of options, and we tried a bit of everything. Standout dishes: Mutton Soup: This was a highlight of our meal. The flavors were rich, and the mutton was tender. Porota Beef: The combination of porota and beef was a winner. It was a great pairing. Other notable mentions: Steak: The steak was cooked well, but it didn't blow us away. Alfredo Pasta and Cakes: These were solid options, but we're looking forward to trying more in the future. Overall: The restaurant provided a warm and welcoming atmosphere, and the service was attentive. If you're looking for a restaurant with a diverse menu, Paragon Restaurant is a good choice. Be sure to try the Mutton Soup and Porota Beef. Rating:4/5 stars remember its a premium food court...

MGrill is a top fav of most Calis. The food is top quality. It is served quick and the servers are attentive. The biryani, kebabs, Arabic mezzo platter, parotta and chicken roast and the falooda are all simply excellent. They have sushi too and Yemeni mandi. Both of which I haven't tried but seem to have customers. Their breakfast spread is awesome too. Appam and egg roast being the top favs.

I was really looking forward to trying the famous biriyani here, especially since we traveled from Kochi, a long distance just for it. While the other dishes were quite good and satisfying, I was disappointed to find that they didn't have biriyani available. It's quite a letdown given the restaurant's reputation for it. Hopefully, they will have it next time so I can finally enjoy their acclaimed biriyani! Overall, a good place for other tasty food, but the absence of biriyani was a bit of a miss for me.

This is my first time coming to M grill, and that too because I knew it was from the paragon group. My favorite food is biryani, so I ordered it. The biryani was very tasty, the spices were good, the chicken was cooked to perfection, I liked it a lot, but despite the good atmosphere and good services, it is difficult to get a seat, so reach early if possible.

We love the fish mango curry eith crispy appams/malabar porata, chicken portobello even if there isn't any portobello mushrooms, pan asian fried rice, all the pastas and meals for lunch which comes with a lot of unlimited tasty sides. We can bring our guests here with with no qualms.

Located in the Focus Mall, MGrill is a part of the famous Paragon Group, which means they have ahuge reputation to live up to, and they manage to do that just fine. We have dined here on several occasions and have had no reason whatsoever to feel disappointed with either the service or the food quality. They have a variety of cuisines on their menu and we have tried quite a few of them over the last few months. In particular, I love their North Indian cuisine, since I am a North Indian myself, and finding authentic North Indian cuisine in Calicut can be a challenge sometimes. Even their Biryani is excellent, as is the middle-Eastern and other cuisines that they offer. In beverages, their refreshing Mint Lime is my all-time favourite. One thing is for sure - whatever your cuisine choice, you cannot go wrong with MGrill.

After almost 23 years, I was back at Hotel Sagar. This restaurant used to be one of my favorites back then, and this time again, no complaints! We ordered the Beef Roast, the Spring Chicken Dry Fry and some Porotas. Each and every dish was superb but the Spring Chicken Dry Fry took the crown! The fried coconut bits added to the flavour. Absolutely spectacular dish! The Beef Roast was awesome too and tbe Porotas were light and flaky, absolutely lipsmacking. Overall, happy to have got the same quality great food that I had at Sagar about 23 years ago. Highly recommended ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐

Breakfast at Sagar is something people hype up, and for me, it turned out to be a decent experience. The appam had a crispy exterior with a soft, fluffy center. The idiyappam and veg stew were fine, nothing great. The chicken stew, on the other hand, was genuinely good something I’d recommend. The chicken curry was okay. My only gripe was that none of the dishes were served hot, which took away from the overall experience. Service was quick, and the staff were helpful with parking. Overall, a decent breakfast spot.

A Mixed Bag at Hotel Sagar – Great Flavors, Room for Improvement We recently dined at Hotel Sagar with high expectations, and while some parts of the experience delighted us, others left us tapping our fingers and raising our eyebrows. First things first, the wait. Yes, we understand a popular place attracts crowds, especially in the air-conditioned dining area. But what really tested our patience was watching familiar faces of the staff breeze past us… and somehow magically seat guests who arrived well after us. It’s one thing to wait your turn, it’s another to feel invisible while VIPs get priority. Not the best first impression. Now let’s talk food, because here’s where things pick up. We ordered the chicken biryani, and while it wasn’t anything groundbreaking, it was decent. Flavors were balanced, though we wish the chicken had been a bit more tender and the spices a touch bolder. Next came the caramel custard, and it was genuinely good, smooth, creamy, with just the right sweetness. Unfortunately, they only had one left The fruit salad with ice cream was a refreshing treat. Fresh fruits, chilled creaminess, and generous portions made it a lovely pick, especially on a hot day. But the true hero of the meal? Without a doubt, the chicken lollipop. Perfectly fried, crispy on the outside, juicy inside, and carrying that punch of spice that makes you nod in satisfaction after every bite. Highly recommended! We also tried the fish karimeen, and it was delicious, tender, flavorful, and cooked to perfection. A bit on the pricier side, but if you're in the mood to splurge on good seafood, it’s worth it. Service, however, could use some serious polishing. The staff seemed overwhelmed and under-trained. There were long gaps between ordering and getting served, and at times it was hard to even flag someone down. More hands on deck and better customer attentiveness would go a long way in elevating the overall experience. Final thoughts: Hotel Sagar has the culinary chops to shine, but it’s the service and seating etiquette that need some love. If they can sort out the crowd management and service speed, this place could easily become a go-to favorite. Food: 4/5 Service: 2.5/5 Ambience: 3.5/5 Value for Money: 3.5/5 Overall: A good experience with standout dishes, just come with patience and a bit of luck on the seat.

I tried their Parotta and fish curry. Very tasty fish curry and the parotta was crisp and fluffy. I went there at 11:30 pm. And the tea was perfect

I recently visited this restaurant and tried their chicken biryani, and it was simply delicious. The rice was perfectly cooked and aromatic, and the chicken pieces were soft, juicy, and full of authentic flavor. The spices were well-balanced, and the raita served alongside added a nice cooling touch. The ambience of the hotel was calm and welcoming — neat interiors, comfortable seating, and a pleasant atmosphere with soft background music. It’s an ideal place for a relaxed dining experience. The service was excellent — the staff were friendly, attentive, and quick to respond. They even served hot water on request, which was much appreciated. Overall, it was a wonderful dining experience — tasty food, great ambience, and very good service. Highly recommended for biryani lovers....

Excellent service! Nothing to say about the food — it was superb. I had only vegetarian dishes, including soup, which were delicious. I was wondering if I had visited a vegetarian restaurant.
