History museum
Buxton National Historic Site & Museum, located just south of Chatham in Ontario, is a museum that tells the story of abolitionist Lord Elgin creating a haven for freed slaves in 1849. The site is part of Chatham-Kent's rich history and showcases the prosperous early black settlements. It highlights Reverend Josiah Henson, who inspired Harriet Beecher Stowe's 'Uncle Tom's Cabin,' and his role as a conductor on the Underground Railroad.
This museum is small but a lot of history. The school and graveyard, and church are so important to learn about our Black History and underground railroad. The two ladies working there were descendants of the black citizens.
Wendy D — Google review
I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to Ricky and Bradley for the powerful and meaningful experience our students and chaperoning adults had at the museum. Ricky and Bradley’s enthusiasm and depth of knowledge—combined with their warmth and ability to engage students at their developmental stage—were truly exceptional. The way the material was presented was not only thought-provoking but also forward-looking, fostering both connection and compassion. The Buxton Museum and Historical Site, along with its dedicated staff, is truly a gem of Southwestern Ontario and was a highlight of the year for the London Waldorf students.
Natalia P — Google review
Spent two days here for the annual “Homecoming.” This place aka The Elgin Settlement, was the largest & most successful of the black settlements born out of the influx of freedom seekers who came to Canada on the Underground Railroad. It is rare to find intact buildings from this era. The schoolhouse, church & museum are the legacy of this amazing community. We had a wonderful time at Homecoming & will return.
Corey M — Google review
The tour guides are so very knowledgeable of the history the black slaves who settled in Canada. It was good to hear the stories be told in hopes for it to never repeat itself wver again. It would be wise if the school boards partnered with the Buxton National museum to educate our future generation the same way they do with educating youths about the holocaust of the Jewish people.

I don't have any family in these areas but they get togethers that they do have are great and events are amazing highly recommended.
Sabrina R — Google review
This was the annual observance of Black History month with the highlight "100 year anniversary of the underground railway". I took part in a drum circle (community). There were classic cars, a baseball tournament featuring the local "best of the best". There could have been more food vendors. The classic cars should have been displayed further away from the food. Diesel & food do not mix.
Dedee O — Google review
You will learn more in one visit here than you will in all of elementary & high school. Fascinating and terrifying all in one. Truly amazing that within a year all the white families wanted their children to receive the best education at the black school thus forcing the all white school to close. I highly recommend this tour.
Ryan — Google review
I didn't get to go inside because it was already closed for the evening, but when I visited at dusk, it is was a perfect evening dusk in a beautiful rural setting. There are lots of historical markers and interpretive exhibits outside so I get a sense of what the settlement was like. An important location in the history of settlement of settlers from the Underground Railroad. Worth a visit.

Provincial park
Nature & Parks
Rondeau Provincial Park, located southwest of London, is Ontario's second-oldest provincial park and boasts the largest tract of endangered Carolinian forest in Canada. The park's vast marsh, warm waters, eight kilometers of beach, and diverse forest are home to 330 bird species, whitetail deer, and southern plants and animals. With 262 camping sites available, it's a popular destination for nature enthusiasts.
Great place to visit. There are walking paths both by the water and through the forest. The highlight is the beach with a strip of black sand. You can find wild cacti and animals. In the fall there is a great promenade along the golden path with a wonderful aroma. Convenient parking, great location, great beaches for swimming in the summer. There is a place to launch boats and kayaks.
Victoria K — Google review
We had an amazing time at Rondeau Provincial Park! This hidden gem offers a perfect blend of natural beauty and recreational activities. The long, sandy beaches along Lake Erie are pristine and perfect for swimming, paddling, and relaxing. We loved exploring the park's diverse habitats, including the scenic marshes and old-growth forests. The trails were well-maintained and provided excellent opportunities for hiking and birdwatching. The park's facilities were clean and well-organized, making our stay comfortable. **Suggestions for improvement:** - Please check the water temperature of the showers as it was too hot during our visit. - Consider offering rentals for kayaks and canoes to enhance the park's recreational offerings. Highly recommend visiting Rondeau for a peaceful and enjoyable outdoor experience!

Went there for camping in August . Approximately 3 hrs away from toronto . Has the most beautiful sunset scenery that you can experience. If you are into long trails with no hills to climb this is your place . clean showers and washroom facilities inside the camp site . Has a little corner store with gigantic ice creams , do me a favour just get 1 scope if you are going with the waffle ice cream cones. There is a bar nearby slightly over priced but great food .

Loved it, took bicycles and towed a bike trailer with small children. Roads were easy and well marked. Map provided at the gate was handy and easy to use. We finished at one of the many covered picnic spots near the sandy beach. Bathroom outhouses were clean and well stocked. A handy foot washing tap at the parking area ensured we didn't bring home half the beach sand on our feet. Definitely returning!!

I only live an hour away and this was my first time camping at Rondeau Provincial Park. This is an awesome park! The beach is so long it seems endless. Lots of hiking and biking trails. Bring your binoculars and birding book. So much to see and enjoy. Already planning another trip.
David F — Google review
We spent the past week at Rondeau. Best spring camping experience ever. This park is amazing. Trails are great for both hiking and bicycle riding. The heritage cottages along the waters edge were very interesting. Also need to note, there was certainly no shortage of washroom facilities. A very well planned provincial park.

Rondeau Provincial Park is a beautiful destination known for its diverse ecosystems, sandy beaches, and excellent birdwatching opportunities. The park offers various recreational activities like hiking, camping, fishing, and swimming. Visitors appreciate its serene atmosphere and natural surroundings, making it a great spot for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers. Tulip trail is 1.6 km long and has multiple boardwalks. Park has 11 kms of sandy beach that can be accessed through park’s access points. Campsites are nice, and located close to each other. Not so private. Get super noisy. Rondeau Bay is also great for surfing. Park store and visitor centre is also great. Highly recommended if you want to spend time on the beach.
Baber K — Google review
Forest bathing at it’s best with lush, green trails & forests surrounded by the Great Lake Erie with miles of sandy beaches to rest, rejuvenate & enjoy! Park has 10 km of winding tree-lined roadways to the beaches, hiking /cycling trails and cabins/cottages. The Provincial park setting is within residential homes & cottages which only adds another flavour of forests & lake views! Park store is remarkably large with supplies, clothing, gifts & an added bonus of fast food/ice cream counter with outdoor picnic areas for your enjoyment. Exciting Visitor’s Centre with wildlife, fish & even home made teepee, kid friendly and age appropriate activities to match. The quaint shop is lovely with various gifts, souvenirs & clothing. A lot of fun packed in this provincial park which makes it that ideal day trip getaway or camper’s weekend away! Well worth the drive for a beach day or camping adventure!!! Ample parking & also dog of note a designated beach in addition to a dedicated boat launch area! Enjoy!🏖️🏃‍♀️⛵️

When in Chatham-Kent, a visit to the Thames Art Gallery is a must-do activity. The gallery showcases exhibits that explore the impact of family expectations on intergenerational relationships. Additionally, it features both permanent and rotating displays of contemporary art by Canadian and international artists. Visitors can expect dramatic settings and stunning artwork in downtown Chatham, Ontario.
This is a really nice art gallery! I love the art that is displayed here, it's a great gallery to visit once in a while as the displays do change. Most of the art is also for sale. Prices range from 3-5 digits. I'm glad it is free to visit, while there are also donation boxes around. This is really an amazing place to visit here in Chatham to get some creative inspiration!

Stellar place. The food was really good I had the pork carnita tacos. Fresh ingredients and flavorful. I tried the flywheel beer and really like it. The bartender was knowledgable, friendly, and prompt. I really like this place. Can definitely see it is more of a weekend crowd it is very big.

Went there on Sunday, crowded and they had run out of some food choices and only had 2 Reuben sandwiches left. We ordered them because we heard they were great. WOW were they ever tasty. Friendly staff. Don't let outside of building fool ya. Fun place recommended!

Came for the butter tart festival but had lunch in the brewery after. Cold beers and delicious food. Place was packed but the staff seemed to handle it well.
Ron H — Google review
We stopped in here based on a recommendation from a friend. They were correct! It was a nice day so we sat on the outside deck under one of the umbrellas. We ordered lunch and sampled some beverages. The flight we very cool. Loved the logos on the glasses! The ordering process was to place it at the bar, and they deliver it out to your table. That worked well. The food came out hot and as ordered. The food was very good! We loved the fries. The portion sizes were large. There was enough food for another meal. They have a pretty large out door area in the back for concerts. There was enough parking, but I could see if they had an event it would be a challenge. We will be back!
Rob M — Google review
It was a very nice place to experience! The place is open, airy, clean and they serve a nice menu! The Menu I is unique, the food was good the service lacked a bit! You must order your drinks and food at the bar and they bring the meals to your table! We were there early dinner and there were a few customers! The server, bartender was friendly enough however very low key! Not overly talkative almost seemed shy or awkward! This is clearly not his career choice!
Michel H — Google review
We love trying different breweries on our road trips, and Sons of Kent Brewing has stood out as one of our favourites. I have never been a big sour beer drinker, but the Orange Creamsicle Sour was so good we even bought a 6 pack on our way out. Another honourable mention was the Juice Box IPA and my partner loved the Berry White! The fries were delicious, I bet the other food is too. The people working there were really friendly. There's lots of seating, the outside looked really great too. I can't wait to come back.
Rachel H — Google review
Incredible beer, delectable food, and super cool atmosphere. Really incredible brewing recipes (multiple award winning staples), with seriously well thought seasonal releases will have you coming back for more. Something for all types of beer lovers from lighter side of the spectrum ranging to the juicier and darker brews. Staff are super nice and really helpful in picking your beer selections if its your first time, and treat you with lots of warmth. Food has only improved over time, their smash burger and Ruben sandwich are great but they also put together a mean charcuterie. Part of every local event, the brewery also hosts lovely events throughout the year including concerts, markets and trivia.

I had a great first time at Mamma Maria’s the restaurant is absolutely gorgeous and the food is amazing quality and authentic. This place seat almost 300 guest and they even have a private banquet area to host weddings and any special events . This restaurant is a grandfather to 2 other Italian restaurants located in Chatham it’s an amazing family owned restaurant. Next time your in town give this place a try you won’t be disappointed

Our server was so nice. He was courteous and willing to help. It was great. The chicken parmesan was delicious but one thing I wonder about...I had it for lunch another day and tonight dinner and they were the exact same size but this always almost 10 dollars more. Last time we were told that the dinner portion was supposed to be larger. It is not.Why do they charge so mivh more for the exact same size?

Mamma Maria's did not disappoint! We arrived only 30 mins before they were closing and I was a little worried about whether the kitchen would still be taking orders but they absolutely did and boy did they deliver. Food was fantastic! Hot. Fresh. Damn delicious. Our server was lovely. Gosh I wish I'd made note of her name. Warm, friendly and very helpful with recommendations of both food and wine. Would happily dine here again and recommend to others. For a fabulous meal downtown Chatham, this is a gem you must experience.

My wife and I were in Chatham and decided to for lunch. I love veal sandwiches and opted to go to the place that claims to have the best in town. After getting the $22 sandwich my immediate thought was; if this was the best in town maybe it’s the only one in town. Absolutely horrible; very expensive considering you could barely make out that it had veal in it until you peeled back one side of the bun to bear a mere sliver of veal; what a joke. You want to charge $22 and can’t even bother to put enough meat on it so that the patron actually sees what they are eating. You would think the intent was to sell a quality Sandwhich but I’m thinking now they are just selling buns that are slightly dressed up. Very disappointing experience. I did learn though that not only is it not “the best” it pretty much the worst veal sandwich I’ve ever had, and I’ve had many. Did I mention that it was $77 for lunch?

We absolutely love Mama Maria's! This place makes unbelievable food that feels steeped in authenticity and is rich in flavor. Their menu is fantastic, but their specials are not be slept on. The staff are also exceptionally aware of dietary restrictions and can accommodate without compromise. Their GF pizzas (which we routinely get for my Celiac wife) are amongst the best pizza (GF or otherwise) I have had in my life. Date night, or family visiting, this has become a must-visit place for us.

Churrascaria Steakhouse & Takeout is a sophisticated chophouse located in Chatham, Canada, offering a globally inspired menu in cosmopolitan surroundings. This family-owned Portuguese restaurant provides a lovely atmosphere for families and date nights alike. With its chic and hip yet classy ambiance, it's an ideal spot for group parties and events with a nod to Portuguese culture. The menu features excellent Portuguese dishes and a delicious wine selection that has made it one of the favorite restaurants in the area.
Finally decided to try Churrascaria after living in Chatham for 2-3 years. What a mistake waiting that long. Very impressed with the food portions and the quality of the food. Tastes incredibly delicious. It's pretty rare these days I have food left over. I picked the BBQ chicken and shrimp. My wife picked the lamb. Melted off the bone. Both of us have left overs and we left full and happy. It's worth the little extra the meals cost here.

Stopped in for lunch here on our way to Windsor and fell in love with the place. The interior and exterior design are beautiful. We sat on the patio and enjoyed the house salad and bbq chicken power bowl and both were incredibly fresh and delicious! Claudia was our server - so sweet and attentive. This is a hidden gem I thoroughly look forward coming back to!

We popped here for a late lunch/dinner. Just as we got into the city. Our waitresss, who was so lovely. Claudia! She shared some of her personal memories here. And we loved that. Felt refreshing. The food was amazing. Got the soup of the day. My mom got the chicken and I got the seafood pasta. Mine was so much. I was not expecting that. And the complimentary bread that came at the beginning. With the butter and oil. Yummmm. I recommend sitting in the bigger space of the restaurant. I loved the art. And the back patio. Even though we didn't sit there. I enjoyed a walk-thru of the restaurant.

The restaurant offers a cheerful and modern interior, serving exquisite contemporary dishes prepared by Chef Leona Williamson. Additionally, Mamma Marias Ristorante on King Street provides an authentic Italian dining experience with its old-world ambiance and delicious cuisine.
Appetizer was great ! Drinks AMAZING. But don’t be expecting good customer service when you do not have a reservation. Megan was not attentive or pleasant and thrown us onto the manager over a request for a an allergy… which confused him and us. We were excited to enjoy a date night here but when the cheque was the quickest thing she brought out and cared about I’m not sure we want to return. Update 09-28-24: We came back and the service was 100 percent night and day. The Korean pork belly lettuce cups melt in your mouth and the vegan dessert was out of this world!! Service was amazing and Penelope was witty and patient with my allergy. Happy we came back!

This place has such a cool vibe. Great range of items in the menu, and I was hearing from people that "everything is good," so I had to check it out. Went for lunch, had a bowl of butter chicken soup (the special), and cobb salad. This was not a typical diner style cobb salad. it was a boutique style cobb. The soup had lots of chicken and tons of flavor. Service was very good and atmosphere was super cozy and cute.

Love this place! This is a great spot to come for a date night, business meeting, or dining out with a picky eater. Their menu is so big & has so many amazing options that anyone can eat here & it’s done right!! This is definitely one of our favourite date night spots I highly recommend the spinach dip! I dream about their spinach dip. It’s hands down the best I’ve ever had. It’s cheesy, garlicky & the crispy pitas are an absolute game changer. I have no idea what they are putting on those pitas but they are unbelievable. Their pasta dishes are all very good as well with good portions. It can get pricey here especially if you’re ordering drinks so if you’re looking to experience this place & stay within a budget I’d recommend coming on Thursdays for their date night menu! Two can dine for $59 & it gets you an app, two entrées & a dessert! That way you can still try a bit of everything.

Quo Vadis Pizzeria is a stylish and modern eatery that specializes in wood-fired pizzas, pastas, burgers, and a variety of Italian dishes. A must-try are the mozzarella sticks—often hailed as the best around—as well as their delicious spinach dip served with warm pitas. Very nice and cozy place for dine in. Lots of items to chose from the menu. Very clean place too. I tried their pizza and it was reasonable priced. Staffs are great. They prepare fresh food so do allow 15-20 minutes for the food. I would love to come back again.

Came to Quo Vadis for lunch today and everything was amazing. May have gotten lucky on this but we were seated right away. They have a good menu with some unique and interesting options as well as the classics. For the portion size you get the price is really good I paid $15 for a personal size pizza that was bigger then I was expecting so I brought home leftovers. The restaurant was clean and staff were very friendly. Overall I would highly recommend.

First time trying their appetizers. I’ve heard great things about the mozzarella sticks and spinach dip specifically. Decided to try mozzarella sticks, garlic bread, and the Greek dip trio. I always try to like mozzarella sticks and just always hate them. These were the best I’ve ever had and SO good! Garlic bread on ciabatta was exactly as it should be and done well. The dips were absolutely outstanding! I don’t know if they’re made in house or not, and I don’t care. It seemed like we did wait an awkward amount of time for someone to come over, seeing as we were the only table in the restaurant at the time, but after that our service was great! Also, the price was unbeatable. The apps were on special for half price and the pint of beer was $5.
Allison L — Google review
Get the mozzarella sticks! Now that we have that out of the way, I don’t think I’ve had a bad meal from here before. I’ve had many of their specialty pizzas, pastas, sandwiches, appetizers & they have always exceeded my expectations! They have great portion sizes. Amazing customer service & very delicious drink options that are so reasonably priced as well! I went for apps last night with a bunch of friends. The spinach dip was great & served with these delicious pitas. The portion was huge. One of the few places you don’t need to order extra pitas with. Next up is the Greek trio. Also served with the same delicious pitas & three dips! The spicy feta and roasted red pepper dips were the best for sure! Then of course mozzarella sticks! I think pretty well everyone ordered these & loved every last one of them! Can’t recommend this place enough!

Indian restaurant
Nestled away from the bustling downtown area, Spice & Curry on Kiel Drive is a hidden gem that every food lover should discover. Managed by the dynamic duo of Shelly Sakhuja and Chef Gurmeet Singh, this charming eatery fills the air with delightful aromas as Chef Gurmeet crafts his signature dishes in the kitchen. While it may be tucked inside a shopping center with limited parking, don’t let its unassuming exterior fool you; the culinary experience here is nothing short of exceptional.
We're in the mood for Indian cuisine, and decided to try out thus establishment. That was a good decision. The location is kind of obscured in a shopping center, and parking is somewhat limited. However, what they're lacking in outside appearances is more than offset by their excellent dishes. All of their curry dishes are well seasoned and prepared. Each types of curry are uniquely accented by their distinctive spices. Recommending medium heat/spice level, any higher may cause certain discomfort. The staff is friendly and very accommodative. Portions were generous, and pricing seemed reasonable for this area.

I had such a wonderful dining experience here. This restaurant is a true gem for Indian cuisine. The flavors were bold and authentic, and the portions were generous. I eat Indian food quite often, in both Ontario and BC - Spice and Curry stands out as my favourite! The food is truly delicious, the portions are generous (especially the meat) and the welcome is always warm. I go out of my way to visit and I love introducing it to new people. They have a wide variety of options and spice levels to suit all tastes.

If you're in the mood for classic Indian comfort food, spice and Curry is a solid choice. The restaurant offers a variety of traditional dishes with generous portions and authentic flavors. The service is impeccable. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and willing to offer recommendations based on your preferences. You can tell they take pride in the food they serve, and their passion for the cuisine shines through in every interaction.

Was my 3rd time here after visiting Ontario. Took my family out and it was, as always the most delicious food in town. The servers were extremely sweet and fast! Would definitely recommend going here!!!

The staff were very friendly. I dnt remember the lady name but she was very friendly and its a nice place. Ordered Palak panner, naans and Biryani. Quality and quantity of food was excellent. They dnt had French fries on the menu, but still they made for us when my daughter had asked for it. Thank you so much for your hospitality.
