Natchez

Natchez is a city in Mississippi. Set on the Mississippi River, it’s known for antebellum mansions like the unfinished, octagonal Longwood, and the Melrose estate, part of the Natchez National Historical Park. Once a trade route, Natchez Trace Parkway is now a recreational road and scenic drive. To the south, Grand Village of the Natchez Indians is home to a reconstructed Natchez house and three ceremonial mounds.

Longwood is a unique house museum located in Natchez, Mississippi. It is an unfinished 8-sided antebellum mansion with a distinctive byzantine onion-shaped dome. The construction of Longwood Plantation began in 1860 but was interrupted by the Civil War, leaving the northern workers to abandon the project. As a result, only the exterior and basement level were completed before wealthy cotton planter Haller Nutt's death in 1864.
Great guided tour!! Wonderful park surrounding the building, so peaceful and beautiful! The house was not terminated back then and it is super interesting to see the “skeleton” (it’s a brick structure) of the building in the inside!

What a shame this home was never finished past the lower level. That being said, the upper levels are quite amazing as is. To look up and see the bones of this structure was awesome. Our guide Kay is very well versed on the history and hardship of this family. Enjoyed it very much.

This was probably our favorite tour of any of the antebellum homes in Natchez. Mona, who did the tour was really entertaining and knowledgeable about the history of not just the house but the area. We had a great time and would definitely go back. Makes me wonder what the upper floors would have been like if they'd been completed.

Beautiful piece of history preserved in its unfinished state. The house is beautiful and the tour is a must if you love history!

Our guide was great. Gave us stories to remember and no just facts. Really enjoyed all the aspects of the "unfinished" mansion.

Amazing tour!!!!Amazing house!!!! Highly recommended taking a tour. Pay at the gate. Cute gift shop, they even sell honey from the 🐝 from the property, too.
Michelle C — Google review
One of my very favorite Natchez homes to tour. It is sad how it's still incomplete, but it gives us a very rare opportunity to look up the skirts of an antebellum belle.

Nestled within a sprawling 128-acre expanse, the Grand Village of the Natchez Indians offers a captivating glimpse into the rich history of this Native American tribe. This remarkable site showcases three impressive ceremonial mounds, including the meticulously reconstructed Great Sun's Mound and Temple Mound, which have been restored to their original grandeur. Visitors can also explore a replica of a traditional Natchez Indian house and delve into the fascinating exhibits at the on-site museum that narrate the story of these ancient inhabitants.
The experience was excellent. It started out with a well done film that explained the area and history. The small museum was well done. They are planning a large one. ms. Avis was very helpful and a great teacher. The grounds are well kept and signs explain the various mounds.

Rarely are we are fortunate enough to have verified, reliable and written evidence regarding ancient cultures. The Natchez Indian culture dates back to the 1200's and survived up in the 1700's. In Mississippi, the Spaniards encountered the tribes is the 1500's. The French interacted in the early 1700's and documented with great detail the Natchez people and their way of life. This landmark provides a brief but detailed look into that culture and so is well worth a stop. As others have mentioned, Avis, who works behind the counter, is a longtime resident of the area and well versed in the history. She is extremely friendly and a delight to talk with so take advantage of her knowledge when you stop in!
Bradford C — Google review
There are quite some (burial) mounds that can be found in the Mississippi delta. This one stands out, as the museum gives good background and interesting information and is certainly worth a visit. The surroundings are beautiful (take a hike!), and the lady at the reception is wonderful. Interesting, but a bit forgotten, part of US history! The museum will be extended, that is a good plan :)
Ivo R — Google review
Definitely worth visiting, especially if you're interested in Native American history. The small museum has so much information about the Natchez tribe. We happened to come on a day that archaeologists were at the museum. I really enjoyed the historical presentation. The staff are very nice, especially the lady that works at the gift shop counter. She is so kind and sweet. She patiently helped me pick out two pairs of earrings and was a delight to talk with.

A little bit of history hidden away behind a neighborhood and strip mall. Three mounds can be discerned and strolled on though today it was 101 and very humid. This stopped a lot of strolling outside There is a small museum onsite with a collection of artifacts and information about the site and peoples. The museum also hosts a short video on the area and Natchez tribes. The lady running the museum was very helpful and engaging. Their cash register is broke at this time so no purchases were possible from the gift store. The weather was nice though warm and humid. Great place to learn about the area in Pre-Colombian times.

Museum on the Natchez tribe with lovely displays and a great book selection. Preserved mounds directly next to the museum.
Nora G — Google review
I visited here after visiting a couple of other places and was kind of disappointed prior to coming here. This place was delightful, and I am so very glad I stopped by. A lovely lady was working the front, gave pamphlets on the area, and information about the Village. There is a long history here, and an amazing spot. If you are in the area, I highly suggest you come here and take a look around. Watch the short film and then walk around the mounds. I would suggest wearing comfortable shoes and drinking plenty of water while here.

Natchez City Cemetery, once hailed as the Most Interesting Cemetery in the South, offers a unique and captivating experience best enjoyed with a guide. The cemetery is home to intriguing stories and unusual details that can be appreciated through a self-guided tour or with the assistance of a hired guide. Visitors can explore tombstone inscriptions that depict romantic and mysterious tales of the deceased.
I'm glad that I was only visiting! We first walked around aimlessly with a simple map. After realizing that this might be a bit more interesting than expected, we paid for the audio tour. The tour provided some history of the city and stories of some of the people buried there. Marker 13 has to be one of the strangest stories that I have heard. I would recommend the audio tour, but I think that it would be more interesting to walk if the weather allows.

Interesting cemetery with historic cisterns, water fountain, and notable graves including Florence Ford, the Lee family, Don Jose Vidal and victims of the Rhythm Nightclub tragedy. Represented are a variety of architectural styles including one cast iron tomb.

It was interesting to explore this historic cemetery. There is a sign with a QR code and brochure at the main entrance. Scan the QR code to buy the online video tour, and the brochure has the online driving tour map.

Beautiful cemetery, but fairly odd to navigate through. Google Maps isn't correct with roads and paths. One way streets that you don't know are one way until you're at the end or at an intersection of the road. I'll be back when I have more time to spend and enjoy it more.

A must see when in Natchez. A beautiful, quiet place. Stop by the cemetery office and get a map then enjoy every stop. Amazing stories and beautiful old gravesites will captivate you. The lanes are narrow but we had no trouble maneuvering through. Go check out this historic treasure!

This place was unique and full of history . It was interesting reading all the stories . Although I enjoyed looking at the beautiful monuments, I just couldn’t help but to feel sad after reading the stories behind some of the grave sites . This is a must see place !

Rosalie Mansion and Gardens is a stunning brick Greek Revival building in Natchez, boasting a rich history dating back to 1820. The mansion's architecture combines Greek and plantation styles, featuring front and rear porches, two-story columns, black shutters, and expansive lawns and gardens. The estate was a major headquarters for the Union Army during the Civil War.
A quiet spot to walk through the gardens and pop into the gift shop. Gardens are free and the gift shop has some great items for purchase.

Lovely and informative guided tour of the inside of the home. The tour guide stated that she was new-ish to giving tours and said a couple of times while we were upstairs that she forgot to tell us something about the downstairs and a weird giggle, but as the tour begins on the front downstairs porch and ends on the upstairs rear porch, there is no opportunity to know what was missed. Everyone was friendly. Regular prices are a bit on the high side. I got there and a tour had just begun, and they were kind enough to let me get on that tour. I was able to get some shots of the outdoors. They had a few items for sale in the gift shop referring to the 200th anniversary of Lafayette making his tour around all of the states (that were part of the union at that time), but no reference as to what his connection is with the house. No photos allowed in the home. At one family photo downstairs, the guide was talking about a family photo and that there were two boys and four girls and pointed out the infant and said it was a boy even though it was wearing a dress. It was a christening gown. It was not dressed as a girl. She kept making unpleasant faces as she was talking about it. Grow up. Do better.
Andrea F — Google review
It was a lovely mansion with a knowledgeable docent to guide our tour. The guide was able to explain about the entire history of the house with anecdotes about each successive owner. I was disappointed that no photos were allowed inside the home. There were several unique items that would have helped me remember all the details of the home if I had a picture. The grounds are well maintained.

Nice mansion but very sad I couldn’t take any pictures inside, there was a really cool looking trundle bed that I wish I could’ve captured. Some beautiful art. I love the story about how they got the bell from the USS Mississippi.

Stanton Hall is a historic mid-19th-century mansion that offers guided tours of its ornate halls and living quarters. It is part of a group of properties including Longwood, Magnolia Hall, Dunleith, Auburn, Rosalie, The House of Ellicott Hill, The Briars and The Towers that can be toured individually or with a three-mansion ticket. These mansions showcase the splendor of antebellum life with their grand architecture and manicured grounds.
Our tour guide was polite, clear, and helpful. The tour was informative, fun, and gorgeous. The story is sad, but it reminds us to not rely on treasures of this earth. We don't get to enjoy them for long.

This was well worth our time. The home is absolutely beautiful! We also enjoyed learning about the history of the home. The price for tickets were reasonable. The tour guide, Barbara did a wonderful job showing the home and answering our questions. Judy, the gift shop lady was super friendly. I would recommend stopping here if you are in town and have the time.

Our first visit to a Natchez Antebellum mansion. Our tour guide, Judy, was delightful, entertaining and knowledgeable. The mansion, now owned by one of the Natchez garden clubs, is beautiful and well maintained. Interestingly, when the garden club first acquired the mansion (1938, I think) it had little to no furniture but through hard work and generous donors (some of whom relatives of the original owner) the mansion has beautiful period furniture much of which is original to the home. Worth the visit.

Stanton Hall in Natchez, MS is an architectural marvel and a gem of historical preservation. Originally named Belfast, it was built during 1851–1857 for Frederick Stanton, a cotton broker, as a replica of his ancestral home in Ireland. In 1890, the home was turned into Stanton College for Young Ladies. This stunning antebellum mansion, with its grand columns and exquisite interiors, offers a fascinating glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of the mid-19th century. The guided tours are exceptionally well-done, with knowledgeable guides who bring the rich history and stories of the Hall and its original inhabitants to life. The mansion’s period furnishings and meticulous attention to detail make every room a visual delight. The surrounding gardens are equally beautiful, providing a peaceful and picturesque setting. Visiting Stanton Hall is a journey back in time and a must-see for anyone interested in Southern history and architecture.

We went as a group so we had a tour guide. He was extremely knowledgeable but quite difficult to listen to because his voice stayed at the same pitch, so it got boring. The Hall was incredible, the doors to the rooms were ginormous. It's great to hear some original pieces of furniture had made there was back. It must have been some house in its day. Fantastic wallpaper.

Nestled in the historic Under-the-Hill District of Natchez, Magnolia Grill offers a casual dining experience with stunning views of the Mississippi River. Housed in a rebuilt saloon, this eatery features floor-to-ceiling glass windows that provide an excellent vantage point for watching river activities. Specializing in Gulf seafood, steaks, and burgers, it's a local favorite known for its regional cuisine with a Louisiana influence.
This was hands down the best food we had while in town. Everything was scrumptious per my daughter. The location right off the Mississippi River is the perfect backdrop. All the staff were nice and attentive. After dinner we were able to take beautiful pictures by the river. I highly recommend this restaurant and will visit the next time we are in town.

We had an early dinner on a Tuesday so no problem getting at a table with a view. Shrimp and grits was good but the grilled asparagus was anemic and no seasoning. There server, Cody came out with an order of grilled zucchini to replace the asparagus because the kitchen was not happy with their asparagus today. Nice touch to be preemptive. My fried shrimp were nice size but way too much breading for me. Side of grits very good. Also we had fried green tomatoes with good hollandaise sauce but the shrimp/crawfish topping seemed like it had been in the steam table too long. Kinda of tough. Nicely breaded but for us too thick of a slice so interior was crunchy.

The place was packed. All the staff was constantly running. Had the grilled shrimp with loaded potato and grilled asparagus. Everything was cooked to perfection. Our server was cheerful and even suggested a couple of places in New Orleans to eat. She couldn't have been nicer. Just a great place with great food and staff.

Extremely friendly, very helpful with menu recommendations. Our server was Lisa and she was phenomenal. Hats off to the chef, this was the best meal of my entire 9 day vacation. We ate all over New Orleans, Florida, & Alabama. This topped everything. I had the bbq shrimp, which was cooked PERFECTLY. Thank you so much for a wonderful dinner

The Camp Restaurant is a cozy, old-school spot that offers a variety of pub fare from tacos to burgers, along with an extensive selection of craft draft beers. Located in Natchez, it provides spectacular views of the Mississippi River and serves delicious food reminiscent of New Orleans. The restaurant's outdoor bar is a popular spot for enjoying burgers and local microbrews while watching riverboats cruise by.
Everything was delicious! We started off with the Philly Cheese Totchos. They tasted great and would have been a meal in itself. I got the 8 oz. Slow Burn - medium rare. The burger was a Perfect medium rare and hit all the right taste notes. My wife loved her Turkey Ranch Melt. If I lived in the area this would become a regular stop. The service was also fantastic.

Wow!!!! YOU MUST COME TO THIS PLACE!!! For the Fourth of July, my bf and I came to this restaurant around 7:50 P.M., and there was not a long wait at all, especially during festive circumstances like the Fourth of July. Our waiter Brice was the BEST, EVER, and he was so attentive to ALL of HIS customers. We both ordered the Island Chicken Tacos: 100/100!!!! Of the charts!!! Hands-down, the best tasting chicken tacos that I have ever enjoyed. For dessert, the BREAD PUDDING AND SEASONAL CHERRY PUDDING WAS SOOOO DELICIOUS!!!!

Excellent restaurant. Everyone here was so friendly and helpful, especially our waiter who couldn’t have been nicer or more helpful (sorry I’ve forgotten your name but photo attached!) The burger was great, with a perfectly cooked medium rare patty, and some nice buffalo wings. A gem in Natchez

Really nice place "under the hill" in Natchez. The kitchen takes care to make the food tasty and our server Macey was spot on. The small burger or slider is good but the regular 8oz gives a better meat to stuff ratio. Juicy and not overcooked with enough heat to be enjoyable.

We are following the"Great River Road" and after a great travel day, we decided to stop at The Camp Restaraunt. We are driving a class B motorhome (21') and has no trouble finding parking. We went to the bar section of the restaurant and enjoyed a from from the bar menu. It was a busy night, but we were seated within 10 minutes. The staff is awesome & the food delicious!! This restaraunt should not be missed! Enjoyed every bite!!

I Really enjoyed the steak tacos. My children liked the catfish. My wife got a burger which was good. The whole family enjoyed the totchos. The restaurant has rustic/classic kinda atmosphere with a view of the Mississippi River. We will be back

The restaurant was quite busy when we got there on a Monday night in September - but we got seats outside overlooking the Mississippi right way. Our bartender/waitress was excellent! Make a reservation if you want to eat inside. We were VERY happy outside at the railing. Big menu - lots of choice - many of them looked delicious.
Robert — Google review
Well to be honest there was a lot of great potential, just could have been executed better, I had the pork belly tacos, the pork belly was underwhelming and not very tender little to no seasoning, it was drenched in the sauce which was good but a bit more slaw and maybe a single piece of pineapple in the pineapple salsa would have been a nice touch, chips were bland with no salt at all as was the salsa... Great concept just missed the mark, I also had the bread pudding that whole presentation was great was a bit dry and lacking flavor, I'd definitely had better at a famous Dave's in Montana, my husband had the brisket sandwich and a salad and the brisket was super thin sliced and dry more like jerky, the appearance was great but flavors could have been better for sure. Overall it gave mom and pops owned Applebee's vibes. I think the 30 plus minute wait was over excessive considering the host also skipped over us and went to the folks behind us to seat them with the same size party of two and to walk in with over half the tables empty... Just a little bit of a disappointment but with tweaks could be much better.

Neat little place that was close by. Sat at the well stocked bar and was greeted right away by Megan. Read the menu before going so I knew just what I wanted so i didnt have any questions. Ordered the Rib and Chicken Combo. Half rack of ribs and a chicken half with sides of baked beans and some coleslaw. The chicken was apparently a close cousin to an Emu because it was huge! Tasty as can be as well. The ribs were tender and almost fall off the bone and were very tasty and then with the addition of just a hint of their sauce were absolutely wonderful. The biscuits in the Biscuits and Blues name were small but soft and delicious. They serve them with a butter blended with apricot preserves. Yummy! There was no live music or even any blues playing but the food and atmosphere made it seem not important. The place had a good number of local folks eating which is always a good sign for me. Parking is ample but the entrance can be missed if you're not careful. All in all - worth the visit.

Lovely little restaurant with live music in the heart of Natchez. The service was very attentive and quick. When the food arrived I was pleasantly surprised. Everything was very fresh and so tasty. The burger was so different to anything I had before or what I expected based on the description on the menu. The mix of pork ribs, chicken and crawfish along with the cheese and barbecue sauce used was very special. Would recommend this meal to anyone looking for a different take on a bbq burger.

Probably the best meal we had on our 3 week trip through NC, GA, LA. Mississippi. Biscuits with apricot butter, to die for, catfish with cheese grits and crayfish sauce, unforgettable!
Marilu C — Google review
wanted to enjoy my meal, but several issues stood out. The fish was soggy with a burnt oil smell, the oysters didn’t meet expectations, the egg rolls were overcooked, and the greens were cold. I’d recommend focusing on freshness, proper oil temperature, and serving temperatures to improve consistency.
Daniel B — Google review
Came here for lunch and ordered the Fried chicken and Biscuit. The chicken was super moist and was well seasoned. It also had a maple honey butter on it which complimented it well. The biscuit was also fluffy and buttery which was good. The Sandwich was actually pretty large so it was filling. The meal also came with fries which were cooked well and seasoned well. The service was also good and quick. It is in a great location in the historic downtown, so I would recommend it to anyone in the area.

Ate here several times in the past before new owners. After new owners we decided to give them a shot. The biscuits was always good and was free to all that came in and ate. Well now they are $6.00 for three very small biscuits. The first she brought to the table was so hard and salty you couldn’t eat them. The next ones was a little softer but tasted like fish. Also the fried pickles tasted like fish. The red beans and rice had so much garlic in them you could not eat them. The food was terrible and the prices was very high. I will note return.

Fat Mama's Tamales is a popular Mexican restaurant located in a charming house, offering a funky interior and serving up delicious tamales and margaritas. It is considered an iconic eatery in Natchez, known for its Knock-You-Naked margaritas and Mississippi tamales. The restaurant also features patio seating and serves Gringo Pie tamales topped with chili, cheese, onions, and jalapenos.
Stopped by for a quick lunch. The tamales are so good! Maybe the best I’ve ever had? Def the most meat. We got six tamales and the fire n ice pickles and it was perfect to split- if you have the willpower. I went with the recommended blended mango and strawberry marg and it was PERFECT on a hot day. We had to get a dessert and went with the caramel cheesecake since the key lime pie was out. Omg - so good.

Mama doesn't know how to cook. The service and atmosphere were great. But the food was lacking. We had tacos, tamales, and bondin. The tacos were almost passable, but everything else was yuck. Sorry for the review, but Mama doesn't know how to cook.

My two tacos were tasty. The knock-you-naked margarita didn’t. Not sure why they check ID. A person cannot stay long to chat with friends with the staff screaming non stop.

Southwest Tacos, with lettuce, Cotija cheese, sweet peppers, onions, fresh jalapenos, Green Chile sauce, and a lime crema. Those little red peppers are flavor bombs and really take these tacos to another level. Get a side of Mexican Street Corn and your taste buds will thank you...

The tamales used to be so good the last few years they are just totally drying can I eat them. However the Margaritas are okay and if you prefer water or another beverage they have that also. Of course the pickles are still delicious.

Tonight is a sad evening. It is my last night in Natchez, Mississippi. But, I made it so much more enjoyable when I found Fat Mama's Tamales on South Canal Street. Their tamales are by far the best I have ever had! Natchez always makes me happy. There is just something about this town. Full of history and great people and the staff at Fat Mama's were so nice and friendly. Really enjoyed the Cuban Sandwich, but will definitely go back for the tamales and the chili. If you get the homemade chips salt them liberally - they are good. I'm saving some for the drive home. 😊 Great place to relax and watch traffic go by. If ever in the neighborhood take a seat on the patio and order up some of the best tamales ever.

A great Italian experience! You can’t go here and NOT see people you know!! Apps are really Good. Fried raviolis and blackened scallops are amazing. Salads are fresh and dressed well. Entrees provide a good variety of pasta dishes, veal, beef and chicken. The chicken parm is good. The spaghetti and meatballs are fine. The filet is surprisingly amazing! Good wine and drinks. Service was good, but mildly irritated that we customers were ordering foods. Fun place. I’d return!

Love, love, loved it. The food was phenomenal. I got the pasta pinnate with a side Caesar salad. It was amazing. We couldn’t stop going on and on about the salad even. The pasta was delicious as well. My friend ordered the crawfish pasta and Caesar side salad as well. Waiter was great, friendly and attentive. Would go back every week if I lived closer. Definitely recommend.

We walked here from The Guest House Mansion on the recommendation of Carlie, who checked us in. She was absolutely spot on with the description. This cozy, quiet restaurant has it all. I was served the best Fettucine Alfredo Chicken I have ever tasted in my 69 years. It was a more than generous portion, the chicken and pasta was cooked perfectly. That creamy Alfredo sauce was divine. My husband gave high marks to the spaghetti & meatballs. Large meatballs of tender, flavorful beef to compliment his pasta. We both hated to leave even a morsel.

We loved this quaint, casual, but classy atmosphere. Great food and service. The red sauce is a bit on the sweet side compared to what I'm used to (which was unexpected) but still delicious. Just a heads up in case that isn't your thing.

We love it here. We visited once and got the calamari. I haven’t had calamari as good since, I couldn’t wait to go back and get it again. I got the grilled salmon salad- divine. Husband also enjoyed his pasta. I got a Paloma and it was delicious.

Yall, can I say that these croutons are the best I’ve ever had!?! They MELTED in my mouth and this was just my side salad. I got the shrimp pesto and a house red and fettuccine Alfredo with grilled asparagus(perfectly seasoned). Y’all- I will usually leave an Italian restaurant thinking, “dang that was just a plate of noodles that I could have made at home” this is NOT that. My husband’s chicken was cooked to perfection. Everything felt like someone’s Nonna was running that kitchen. EC went above and beyond in her service. We both agreed that this was one of the top Italian meals we have ever had!

Awesome service. My glass was never empty The food was delicious. I liked that the fried raviolis had a Cajun spin on them with crawfish and shrimp cream sauce. I would recommend making a reservation on Friday and Saturday evenings. I appreciate that the shrimp in my Alfredo didn't have tails.
