CANDLES Holocaust Museum and Education Center, founded by Holocaust survivor Eva Mozes Kor in 1995, offers a poignant look into the atrocities of the Holocaust. The museum was rebuilt after being firebombed in 2003 with widespread community support. It serves as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and educates visitors on the dangers of prejudice.
We were surpised by the small building. It was small but so powerful. I would recommend the tour before the virtual theater with Eva. We didn't know what to ask when we first arrived but after we would have liked to ask more but we were there right up to closing. The gentleman who joined us halfway through our self guided tour was a treasure of information. He was patient with our questions. We have added a tour of auschwitz and other holocaust areas to our bucket list.

This is one of the best museums I've ever been to. Everyone who works there is so friendly and informative. They have a bunch of memorabilia and stories of actual survivors and those who were able to escape before the war actually began. I especially loved the video and a chance to ask questions of Eva (the holocaust survivor who started the museum) even though she isn't here with us any more. It's not the biggest museum I've been to, however, it's impact is still impressive and reminds everyone that forgives is important.
Jessica B — Google review
Very informative. Our guide, Arnie, was amazing! He had so much information and additional facts. He answered every question we had and then some. It was easy to tell how much he admired Eva and other people who were part of her story. The portion where you get to “talk” to Eva was wonderful. After leaving the museum I felt like I really knew her. This is a wonderful tribute to a woman who did everything she could to bring the awful reality of the Holocaust to light, and sought to make a better life for herself and her family while honoring all of those who didn’t survive and those who suffered with the memories of their experience in the death camps.
Kyndal G — Google review
This is a really important place to visit, and it's done exceptionally well. I couldn't believe how cool the projection of Eva Mozes Kor was. There's a short video of her life, and then she appears, and visitors can ask her questions which her projection answers. The museum does a great job of explaining how fascism rises through the story of Eva and her sister Miriam.
Lucy F — Google review
is a deeply moving and educational place. More than a museum, it serves as a space for reflection and remembrance of the Holocaust and the lessons it leaves for humanity. The exhibits are thoughtfully curated, with testimonies and materials that encourage empathy and highlight the importance of tolerance and peace. It is a must-visit for students, families, and anyone seeking to understand and honor human resilience in the face of adversity.

Great museum! Loved the information that we got. Even though it was policed by them not by myself the parent what my child could learn. Docent was very informative and passionate. No where on any site did it say admission was only for an hour. Was disappointed as we drove from Indy and was rushed out before even finishing the second room. The lady at the front cut off the docent mid story and barely allowed to take a picture in the room due to time when we didn't necessarily opt for a guided tour but got one anyways from the docent (who again was lovely, we did enjoy her stories). Was not really left alone to peruse by ourselves again resulting in missed part of the museum by time end which was weird for a museum. Make sure you have plans on top of the museum, as I'm not sure I would have came for a rushed tour with a 3 hr round trip. Overall a lot was left to be desired by experience. Daughter left frustrated that they refused to answer questions and only stated that she was too young to understand concepts she had knowledge of prior to coming to the museum. Wish we could have walked around by ourselves so I could explain it myself to her. Would have more pictures to post if they let us take more.

Wonderful museum with a rich history, the founder of CANDLES was a holocaust survivor and one many Mendel twins at Auschwitz. The staff were attentive and generous with their knowledge. Exhibits full on information and interactive.
Sarah H — Google review
Did not know this existed; a great piece of WWII history about Eva Kor a surviving Dr. Mengele twin and her sister Miriam who survived his twin experiments and how they found other twin survivors. Also Eva’s husband Mickie Kor also was a survivor of the slave camps of Auschwitz. A great piece of history preserved with pictures and an intraactive film. Highly recommend going.

The Sheldon Swope Art Museum, housed in a stunning 1901 Italian Renaissance Revival building, is a free-admission museum dedicated to showcasing American art from the 19th and 20th centuries. Founded by Michael Sheldon Swope, a Civil War veteran and jeweler, the museum's focus on American regionalism is evident through its extensive collection featuring works by renowned artists such as Edward Hopper, Grant Wood, Charles Burchfield, and Thomas Hart Benton.
It was a lovely visit. Stopped in with my young kids who have an interest in art. We were able to enjoy each piece, and get some inspiration for our own projects.

This museum is updating a lot of areas. Nice setup to view your child's art and more.

Cute little stop on our drive through Indiana. They had a Renoir on loan and curated a little exhibition of Hoosier school artists to go along with it, but the permanent collection was really lovely. Free entry, docents were so friendly and helpful.

Amazing find! I love that this museum has a wonderful display of Indiana artists. Definitely take an hour and stop in. Take a moment to enjoy art history and inspiration.
Lauren M — Google review
It’s free so the price is definitely right! This isn’t a huge collection, but for a small town it’s impressive. There’s some famous works here including a Andy Warhol and Edward Hopper. If you’re in town and an art fan it’s a no brainer to check this out. For most people I’d assume you’ll spend maybe a half an hour to an hour here.

Science museum
The Terre Haute Children's Museum is a long-standing attraction that offers a wide range of interactive exhibits focused on science and technology. The museum features a three-story climbing 'tree house,' an indoor ropes course, and numerous hands-on learning activities for kids of all ages. From the Toddler Zone and Water Table to the stuffed animal veterinary clinic and insect displays, there are engaging experiences tailored to different age groups.
Had my grandsons 1st birthday party here, great idea to occupy the older (6-12yr) kids to not get bored "watching a baby... do nothing" So I'm pleased to say party was a success. Although wish we'd been advised that tickets for specific activities should be purchased BEFORE a 10-15min wait in line, kids we're disappointed after finally making it to their turn then told they had to buy tickets and stand in line again. Did not have the time to do that

This is such a fun place to be! Great for kids of all ages. Our young children love it here and we can spend hours here without getting bored!!
Brandon F — Google review
Great for the littles. Lots to do and see. Reasonably priced.
Dawn Q — Google review
Although it is much smaller than our museum in Indianapolis, we LOVED the interactive parts! Our 3.5 year old kiddo had so much fun. We believe the highlights of the museum for him were: the play kitchen/grocery floor, the third floor with the train tables (we all loved the paper airplane launcher), and climbing the jungle gym that expanded between the three floors. I personally loved the giant bubble. I would recommend the museum for a day trip, and on the weekend if you have a busy kiddo that likes interactive activities. Parking is great on weekends, as it is free. During the week; you’ll have to park in a garage, as Terre Haute is notorious for being meter maids. We went today (Saturday) and it wasn’t that busy.
Erika R — Google review
Our kids enjoy every time we visit here. The ropes course is perfect for our 5 year old. Kids are entertained for several hours.
Bryant S — Google review
We love the Children’s Museum! We purchased the family membership that includes the ropes course. It was very affordable for lots of fun for the year! We went today and we want to give a shout out to Megan for making today so fun! She is so great with the kids!!! 😁
Katie S — Google review
It’s smaller than Indianapolis Children’s Museum, but it had plenty of activities for kids to do. Fun for a weekend outing with the kids.
W N — Google review
Went with my 7 year old and my baby. It was okay. There are 3 floors. There were a few things that did not work or that did not work right. Things stopped working while we were there and had to be fixed. They have a ropes course it was $7 if the child is under 48" then they have to go with some one over 18 but if the child is over 48" then they can go by them self. If the child is under 42" they can not go at all. I would like to see it worked on so the interactions work better next time.

The Eugene V. Debs Museum is a significant local landmark that showcases the life of a prominent union leader and politician. The museum offers visitors an opportunity to learn about Debs' contributions to the labor movement, including his role in establishing Labor Day as a federal holiday. The tour guides are knowledgeable and passionate, providing visitors with an engaging experience. While ongoing restoration work currently limits access to the second floor, this only adds excitement for future visits once completed.
Had a great tour by Allison even though we got there late in the afternoon. The house is beautifully restored. A place of pilgrimage for those committed to ensuring working people get a fair share of our nation's economy.
Kitty D — Google review
Must visit if you are in Indiana! Allison the tour guide is passionate & professional. I requested a shorter tour because I had to be somewhere after, but the tour was so entertaining that I stayed for an hour. No matter your politics, you will leave this tour inspired. For history buffs, view Debs artifacts ranging from presidential campaign materials to craftwork made by fellow prisoners from the labor leader’s Atlanta imprisonment. For historic home fans, jump back in time to 19th century Indiana with many original house features. Stunning detail on the full floor mural of Debs’s life & influence on the American labor movement. Allison paints a picture as engaging as the mural itself. Small gift shop with rare Debs souvenirs (t-shirts, posters, books) that accepts credit card. Can’t say enough about this site. So glad I visited. Made me proud that the Midwest is associated with the pantheon of American heroes from Abraham Lincoln to Eugene V. Debs.
Connor S — Google review
Allison is an amazing tour guide! I had a great time learning about everything that is on display here. Lots of original furniture, art dedicated to Debs, and photographs that tell Debs' story as well as his family's and others that influenced Debs. Allison's expressive story telling had me captivated onto every word. The attic mural was my favorite part. I highly recommend a visit here, and look forward to coming back here again.
Chris I — Google review
Allison led our graduate student group through a tour of the house and it was INCREDIBLE! There is so much to learn about Debs, unions, and American history in general! Allison’s passionate and knowledge made the experience especially enriching and impactful for our students. Highly recommend this amazing (and free) tour experience.
Mary M — Google review
What a great museum dedicated to the life of a fascinating Hoosier. Debs' life should be taught in history. He did so much for lower and middle class workers, including the establishment of Labor Day as a federal holiday. Our tour guide was fabulous--enthusiastic and clearly very knowledgeable about the subject. They're in the middle of some restoration work, so the second floor is a work in progress at the moment. I can't wait to go back and see it after the work is finished!
Stephanie C — Google review
Great museum with a lot of history. The tour guide was amazing. She also mentioned anyone that would like a virtual tour she does zoom tours.
Nomad T — Google review
This museum is an Indiana treasure. There are lots of artifacts to see and enjoy. When I visited I was lucky enough to have Allison Duerk as my guide. She is a fountain of knowledge of the man and the museum. I plan to visit again to buy a souvenir baseball hat. They don't have baseball hats now but plan to have them soon. I collect baseball hats when I travel.
Uncle L — Google review
I got a great tour from a very passionate and well-informed docent (I believe her name was Allison). More about the history of the man rather than the history of the house, it is free and worthwhile to see. The Eugene Debs was a prominent Socialist and that may bother some people as the historical narrative can border on proselytizing, but would you really rather get a tour from someone who didn't care about the man? The passion made the tour great. I recommend it. Tours can be short or up to 90 minutes. I got the full tour and am better off for it.

Magdy's Restaurant offers a cozy and welcoming ambiance within an old Victorian house, creating a comfortable yet elegant dining experience. Head chef Magdy Atwa has curated a menu featuring European classical cuisine tailored to the palates of the Midwest, with dishes like beef Wellington, filet mignon, venison, and chicken marsala. Despite its homely atmosphere, this is not your typical home cooking; instead, it offers a sophisticated dining experience.
Stopped on the way through town. I was looking for some high quality food at a decent price. I order the Red Snapper Livornese. The dish was outstanding, the fish was perfectly cooked, the sauce was tasty. I’m not usually a rice fan, it was the best rice I remember eating. Before the meal was bread that was nicely toasted with butter and a salad with what must have been a homemade blue cheese dressing. I selected banana Fosters for dessert. The food was an excellent value.
Steve T — Google review
The food was incredible and our server was a true gem! We did have a rather long wait for our entrees (perhaps kitchen staffing issues?), but the Red Snapper in a cream cheese crab sauce was amazing! I liked the flavor of potatoes and veggies, but they were a little undercooked for me- although my husband and grandson thought they were fine (I prefer a little more tender). You could literally taste the freshness of the house salad and their in-house blue cheese dressing was perfection! The complimentary bread had the perfect combination of crusty bite and pillowy softness inside. We look forward to returning when we are in Terre Haute again.

There were only 3 tables occupied on this restaurant which I was really looking forward to going and having dinner. Service - terrible; non -attentive. Not hospitable. Food - Mushroom Risotto- way too salty Wedge salad - average Ribeye - terrible quality ; gristle / no marbling Best part was that all the menu items were under $32 except for the ribeye which was on “special” And I failed to ask for a price it was priced at $50 for this subpar piece of meat that was barely choice at best.lucky me - also sat with dirty plates most of the time. $97 later Epic fail . Do not attend this restaurant.

My grandmother’s 80th surprise party was recently hosted here. The atmosphere was warm, welcoming, and made everyone feel right at home. Every dish was absolutely delicious—crafted with care and bursting with flavor. From start to finish, the staff went above and beyond to make the evening special. This place truly is a hidden gem in the area, and one I highly recommend to anyone looking for an experience that’s both memorable and mouthwatering.

We celebrated my mother’s 80th birthday at Magdy’s in Terre Haute, and I can’t say enough about the experience! From start to finish, everything was absolutely perfect. The staff was so professional, the food was exquisite, and the wine and champagne made the evening feel truly special. 💕 If you’re looking for the perfect place to host a celebration, I highly recommend Magdy’s. They made this milestone unforgettable for our family, and I’m so grateful! 🥂✨

We had an amazing time and we enjoyed the food and appreciated the whole experience. Our dinner started with complementary bread and butter. After that, we had a salad with a delicious dressing. Our main course was a dish of quail in special wild mushrooms sauce, a dish of a rack of lamb which I highly recommended, a dish of snapper with homemade cajun spice, and the venison on the cherry port sauce. For dessert, we had this delicious tiramisu. Magdy the owner is a very skilled chef and a friendly welcoming person. This place is one of the best places for me. Highly recommended and it’s better to call before you go.

Family had a private dinner party for a large group. On a Sunday for a surprise birthday. Food was fantastic! Everyone was extremely friendly an helpful for the party. I definitely recommend this place for an excellent meal!

Do NOT judge from the outside, although I can see why you might. We took a chance and we were blown away. It was a very quaint and nicely decorated restaurant. It had white linen tablecloths and napkins, nice music and everything was very clean. They had a nice wine list and we ordered some chardonnay as an appetizer....and then an actual appetizer. For the main fare we ordered beef wellington and chicken caprese. The food was absolutely delicious! Chef Magdy came out and spoke with us. He was absolutely charming!! He comped us free desserts, which were also delicious, and made us feel like we were eating with an old friend. We dressed for the occasion, but it is not necessary at all. It's a very comfortable, fine dining experience. Give it a try.

The food was amazing. I had the Fettuccine Alfredo with crispy brussel sprouts and my husband had Mediterranean Shrimp with a baked potato. The Service was great. The price was right on par with a good sit down dinner. Overall amazing meal. 10/10 would return and recommend!!

Best place in town for homemade desserts! My friends and I literally go there post dinner for just desserts Good lunch selection and variety of lunch items from Paninis to Middle Eastern entrees. The service is always great! Also love how they bring the dessert platter around to show exactly what you can get ( I eat with my eyes). Need to come back again for lunch and dinner. They remodeled since I'd last been here and it has a nice atmosphere inside. Most of the people I saw there were of the older/retired crowd.

Great food, atmosphere and people! The cheesecake and tenderloins are a few of our favorites but everything we've had has been really good! Highly recommend, A+++!

I visited on a Saturday night and sat at the bar area. The server was very kind and courteous. The restaurant was clean and even though it was very busy, my food came out timely and my server checked on me frequently. Everyone working there appeared to be happy and in good spirits the entire time I was there. Food was delicious and the menu was unique.

I got the Grilled White Fish. It was a little under done, but still good. We were on the bar side, so it was kind of noisy. I really like their food. I just wish I could afford to eat there more often. The waitress was great. Very nice without being too attentive.
Karen V — Google review
Everything we had was very good. My wife had the Mediterranean trio and really enjoyed it. My son had the grilled chicken sandwich with the sticky garlic sauce (BBQ type sauce) and said he liked it but would've preferred fried chicken. I had the breaded pork tenderloin and it was great. Not the biggest tenderloin sandwich I've had, but it was delicious. And the potato chips are fresh and delicious.
Geoff F — Google review
As a Chef, I have high expectations when trying a new place. I was ill impressed with the Alfredo sauce which lacked any sort of flavor. Was served a hard day old baked potato and what tasted like movie popcorn butter flavored oil on what should have been a side of garlic bread. Salt is a thing people and flavor is everything. My 3 rating is very generous.

Nestled in the heart of Terre Haute, Stables Steakhouse is a luxurious dining destination that beautifully marries history with culinary excellence. Housed in a charmingly renovated former stable, this restaurant boasts an inviting ambiance characterized by rich dark wood and leather furnishings, plaid carpeting, and exposed brickwork. The stunning chandeliers add a touch of elegance reminiscent of the old Elk Lodge that once occupied the space.
This is a wonderful place to have a night out on a date or with friends. The staff is excellent and went above and beyond for us. Enjoy great drinks, food, and atmosphere here. Worth the price! I will coming back here.

Excellent dining experience in a beautifully restored stable barn that once housed Clydesdales for a brewery. You can dine in a horse stable! Steak was top notch and the bread pudding was a treat. Nice wine selection and a beautiful bourbon bar! Perfect date night place! Recommend! #funwithmarkandjoni

Stables was so much more than I could have imagined. The atmosphere was amazing along with Will, our server. I made reservations and asked them to “make it as romantic as possible” and they did not disappoint. We were led up a flight of stairs to a private room off to the side called the “gangster room” there was a candle in the middle of the table and we were given (free) champagne. The lights were low and there was soft jazz music playing. Our food was 5 stars as well, my husband said it was the best steak he has ever had. We will most definitely be back!!!
Kylie J — Google review
The wait staff was all amazing, but our server, Gretchen, was fantastic! The food is a little expensive, than say, The Outback or something, but those lack all personality and charm which this was full of. The steaks were all cooked to perfection and were so yummy. The seafood soup/chowder was delicious. We were given the largest potato I've ever seen that 3 of us shared and we barely made a dent! The bread pudding was warm and melted in your mouth. We chatted with the manager, Ike, who was so super nice! If you live in, or are ever passing through Terre Haute, stop by! It's literally an old horse stable and there are little rooms/stables all inside that give you some cozy privacy. They also had a piano and I think a cello player that gave it a nice atmosphere! The downsides for us were the French onion soup and the caesar salad which were fine, but not our favorite.
Hilary F — Google review
Stables Steakhouse always has great quality food prepared just right at every visit. The staff is attentive and always ready to answer questions and offer suggestions for menu items. This is not a place to go in a hurry like some restaurants and they aren’t pushy for you to hurry or rush through this is a nice sit down dinner experience so plan for time to sit , relax and enjoy ! Appetizer suggestions : meatballs, sliders if available and lobster bites. The house salad with ranch is great! Main course: Filet mignon or tomahawk (if available) Sides: You MUST try the sweet potato casserole and the carrot balls . Dessert: Bread pudding and our kids say the chocolate cake is the best ever ! Really anything on the menu is worth a try and as mentioned above everything we’ve tried is always cooked just right and seasoned to perfection . Great place to celebrate birthdays or any special event but also nice to just meet up with friends and family for an evening and know you are going to have a wonderful meal and service.

This steakhouse nails it—flavor, service, and vibe. The ribeye was juicy and perfectly seared, the sides stole the show. Service was flawless: attentive, friendly, and spot-on with recommendations. Established in the late 1960s, this classic American diner provides ample space for patrons to savor hearty meals. The menu features an array of classic dishes including pancakes, French toast, burgers, and sandwiches.
Fast and friendly service and good food in a typical diner. Fried biscuits, sausage, and fried mush were all very good. Olympic skillet with pancakes was a hearty and delicious great value! Pecan waffle, with pecans ironed in, was wonderful. Good coffee, clean venue.

My family and I had lunch at Cackleberries for the first time this week. We were impressed by the variety of the menu, the cozy atmosphere, and the friendly staff. We ordered tuna croissant, chicken croissant, and meatloaf. All dishes were great 5 out of 5 except the meatloaf which received a 4 out of 5 from my husband. He said it was a little spicy. There was plenty of parking at the busiest time. I don't find croissant in other restaurants so it was a nice surprise

Great food here. The waitress was very pleasant & efficient. I'm going to see if I can order off of the Kids' Menu next time. I got the short stack(3) of pancakes with 3 slices of bacon. My 5-yr. old granddaughter got the 6 Silver Dollar pancakes & 2 slices of bacon. Look at those things! They're huge. She ended up getting more pancake than I did, at a cheaper price. If you're kids are really hungry, this is the place to bring them!

Japanese restaurant
Umi Grill is a modern Japanese spot in Terre Haute that offers familiar Japanese meals, sushi, and cocktails in a spacious venue. It has become a popular destination for those seeking the freshest fish and seafood. The restaurant originally operated as a fish market but has since expanded to include a larger location where customers can also place advance orders for fresh fish to take home.
After our fourth wonderful experience I realized this review was long overdue. Umi provides without a doubt some of the best sushi I have ever had. It is definitely me and my girlfriend's favorite place to get sushi in Terre Haute. I cannot recommend the calamari enough, it is absolutely incredible and the sauce that it comes with needs to be studied for levels of addictiveness. The raw fish is immaculate. You cannot go wrong with any of the sushi on the menu. The service is quick and receptive. They are literally available for every question or issue you may have with a smile on their face. We absolutely love the atmosphere here, it sets the perfect mood for date night or a night out with friends or family. 10/10, looking forward for coming here for many years to come. Thank you to Chuan and all of the other servers for exceeding our expectations and for making our date nights special!

Umi is a favorite for my girlfriend and me. She took me there for my birthday today and we got the Dynamite Shrimp and a full Dr. Singh. The meal was excellent as usual but as we were leaving the parking lot someone ran out (in the rain) and told us we dropped $20 under the table and they tried to return it. We told them we didn't think it was ours and they could keep it as an extra tip for their great service. Highly recommend! P.S. The Mango Saketini was very good also. 🙂

Food was good. Presentation was very well done. Service was not that great. Waited 45 minutes for drinks and 55 for appetizers. They did apologize for the wait. Wait staff had family friend in they had not seen in a while. Understand that but not 45 minutes. Especially with over a $250 bill. Get a booth for a more intimate setting because otherwise it feels like cafeteria seating. The food was great. Though gets one less star because the sashimi was warm so was the sushi. Food presentation was on point. Beautifully done. Service needs work. You can't have that many dishes on such a small table all at once.

Umi never disappoints! Amazing food! Service tonight was ok; it's been better. Smoked salmon sashimi and tuna sashimi are always amazing! Beef appetizer was delicious! We drive about an hour to eat at Umi. Best around!

I have wanted to eat here since the 90’s and never had time till today :) !! I tried there 2 most expensive sushi dishes, the sushi flight, and the Happy Go Lucky. The presentation was excellent!! The waitress was friendly and cute!! The over all service was excellent, my only major complaints was the lights were a little to dim in the private booths. But the place had an overall cozy vibe that works. And they are doing that nonsense super tip garbage. A proper tip should be 15% period. A happy customer will tip good because there happy and should never be guilted in to it. Both dishes were satisfying. The price is a little high on both as they use Pollock and no truly exceptional dish or a dish of that price should use “pollock/ imitation crab”. Over all I give them 5 stars and recommend trying the sushi Flight!! And again the dish presentation was worthy!!

This is a once a year trip for us. Makes it kinda like Christmas. I love this food. It’s quiet too.

My husband and I came here for his birthday. The food was absolutely delicious. Every single thing we ordered was honestly so good. The atmosphere is fantastic. We sat in a booth that felt very private. Our server was one of the best servers we’ve ever had. His name was Courtland. He was able to give us several recommendations on what to order and it did not disappoint. We will definitely be returning. Highly recommend.

We really enjoyed this place... we tried new things... In a beautiful atmosphere... My son and I shared different sushi rolls with a sashimi bowl. My mother got a salad and miso soup. Beautiful plates!! Oh my goodness the plating was delicious!! The Yuki roll was not to my taste. I do typically like Wasabi sauces... but this was WAY to Wasabi forward. We couldn't finish it... so if you don't like straight up wasabi... don't order this. The Wolfe roll was tasty. We liked it a lot. Very cream cheesy... a little heavy... with a sweet and sour vibe. It was yum... We had octopus umi because my son handt had it... as per norm..octopus is rubbery and weird, but he wanted to try it lol. Now the sashimi plate we got was beautiful and delicious!! So excited about that! Lol. My son also got this noodle dish with an egg that he enjoyed a lot. I'd love to go back and try more!! Thank you!
