Museums
The Bayfield Maritime Museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the rich maritime history and heritage of the area. Open from June to September, this museum showcases fishing and boat building exhibits, rare artifacts, and hands-on activities for visitors to enjoy. It's a great place for history lovers and families with kids to explore the dynamic nautical history of Bayfield and the Apostle Islands.
Awesome museum! A must see if you are in the area. This little museum was so informative about the fishing and shipping industry of the area. The gentleman who was working the front desk was very knowledgeable and helpful if you had any questions. We had a great time here and were really glad we came. It is free, but they do appreciate donations. There’s lots of free parking around the corner on a side street.
Sue J — Google review
Costs you nothing but what you feel like donating to go here. You can spend an hour or just breeze through it. It's located in an attractive building near a marina with an attractive fountain in front. Features a movie and display of shipwrecks of the Apostle Islands. Also has a ship pilothouse in front.

Free little museum with a lot of cool historic nautical boats and artifacts! Worth a quick visit if in town or passing through like we did :)

Interesting information. The staff was knowledgeable and responsive to my autistic grandson's question. Awesome place.

Nice small free museum. Good exhibits on the history of the area.

I love this place! There is an impressive and immense collection of maritime artifacts here. We came on a rainy day and it was a great place to spend some time. I’ll definitely be back. Kudos to the volunteers who make this museum special.

Lots of nice artifacts and history. Really enjoyed visiting. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable.
Leslie L — Google review
What a wonderful experience! Free, but please donate - the kind of place that needs to stay open. Short season - the building is actually used to store boats. So much history, well displayed & explained. Sometimes a series of photographs, sometimes a video, other times very well laid out descriptions. There’s even a cut-away eight cylinder diesel engine. Helpful, friendly staff - obviously passionate about helping us learn about Great Lakes maritime history!

Apostle Islands Cruises Boat Tour is a must-do activity when visiting Bayfield, Wisconsin. The town serves as the gateway to the stunning Apostle Islands National Lakeshore and offers an array of attractions and events. Visitors can explore Victorian homes, shop for local art and souvenirs, or learn about the area's maritime history. In addition to kayaking and boating around the Apostle Islands, tourists can enjoy a 2.5-hour sightseeing cruise offered by Apostle Islands Cruises.
What an amazing cruise with spectacular views. The captain was very informative. The employees were very friendly and helpful. We saw a bald eagle and an eagle nest with a baby eagle. It got a bit cold sitting on the top deck (most of the people on the top deck moved to the bottom, enclosed deck). They offer coffee, hot chocolate, water, sodas, and snacks aboard the cruise. The town where the cruise is located is quaint. We had so much fun exploring and highly recommend.

We went on a very hot day. It was about 90° out so once we were out on the water, it was about 70 so any day that is not incredibly warm. You’re definitely gonna wanna wear pants or bring a blanket. On the first floor there are a lot of little horseflies that like to bite your feet so I would also recommend bringing bug spray. On the top deck, even though it is very breezy if the sun is out the entire time you need to wear sunscreen, you don’t feel warm because of the breeze, but the sun will still tan you. The tour takes about three hours long. The captain had a lot of great history and knowledge of all of the islands it was a very smooth boat ride. Bathrooms were very clean on the boat. It is a very popular tour you would benefit from getting tickets ahead of time online.
Samantha M — Google review
This tour gives you a glimpse of one of America's most beautiful Gems💎 We enjoyed the Captain and the deck hands giving tidbits of info on the history of the Islands and Lake Superior. Make sure to bring a Jacket as it gets chilly on the Lake, I had one and still managed to get an awful cold afterwards! You can bring adult beverages along, I'd suggest one of those soft cooler bags! There is tea, bottled water and little snacks aboard for $2. Definitely worth the money to see these beautiful views!
CREOLE L — Google review
What a great experience, I wasn't to excited to be honest but ended up having a really good time very professional company the crew was very nice and helpful the captain was great, his dad jokes are top tier lol. It's a long ride about 3 hours total I took snacks and waters with me but they do have sodas, waters, chips and other small stuff for sale on the boat. The day we visited was very windy about 20 mph winds so the waves where high the outside/top seating was getting splashed pretty hard, fun at first but got way to wet in a couple of minutes thankfully there's plenty of room inside the ship , the captain warned us we may not be able to get to devils Island but he told us he would try his best to get us there and in the end he did like I said great captain he shares so much information too very knowledgeable did I mention the dad jokes?. great experience all in all I'm planing on doing one of the other tours just because this one was so fun.
Erik S — Google review
Highly recommend. The seating is not ideal but the guide does good job of spinning the boat around so both sides can see. This was very informative and the views were like no other.
Tracey M — Google review
Awesome cruise with a convenient bathroom on board! The fall foliage was truly gorgeous and really elevated the experience, just make sure you dress warm this time of year since the wind really chills your bones!
Christina S — Google review
The grand island tour and the Michigan island lighthouse were great. The captains and crew were both excellent. Weather was a little overcast on both trips and temps were cool. The national park volunteers were very informative and friendly.
John B — Google review
Took 10:00am cruise. Lake Superior was calm. About 72 degrees. About 60 degrees out on water. Lower level has windows to block any wind. Upstairs, of course, doesn’t have windows. Staff helpful and knowledgeable. Captain turns the boat around at strategic spots so both sides have a good view. He also provides audio information of the islands.

The 20-minute ride offers beautiful views from the upper deck and is described as lovely and convenient. Additionally, there are options for sailing charters that welcome four-legged guests.
The ferry ride to Madeline island was wonderful and beautiful! Convenient too! Leaving every hour…the 20 minute crossing is lovely. Nice views from the upper deck and comfy in your car odd it’s colder! The staff was friendly and made the Adventure easy and memorable!
Aj S — Google review
I made it across! It was a nice ferry ride and was easy to get on and off. Captain was nice and put me and the motorcycle in a spot with less chance for splashes. I still got splashed. Oh well.

Absolutely gorgeous trip. Friendly and professional staff. Only $21 round-trip if you ditch your car on the mainland and opt to explore town on foot. :)

Wanted to take our young Akita to Madeline Island and this was the way !! It was his first Ferry ride... and he absolutely loved it, and so did we! He was a very good boy and even gave us his upside-down to let us know how excited and happy he was!
April H — Google review
So here we go, again, Madeleine island very amazing. We got there. We got back. The island was beautiful, but what was most beautiful and most calming about the trip out there was the pleasant ride on the ferry? And we had our car on it, not Bumpy, not choppy, just amazing. Let me tell you amazing. So get out there, yeah. Enjoy a nice ferry right for a very economically priced. 30 to 35, maybe $28. Perfect, perfect price. Get out there and do it, and if you're lucky enough to have David as one of your crewmen, he's, I think 1 of the boat swans on there, well, you know, they always put safety first, these guys safety first every time, and that's what I love about it, and I hope. You do too. So please get yourself out there and take this great adventure on this ferry for yourself.
K B — Google review
Recently took the Madeline Island Ferry for our camping trip at Big Bay State Park. The workers at both ends were efficient and made getting on and off the ferry very easy— I was impressed. They quickly loaded and unloaded cars, oversized vehicles, pedestrians, and bikers. The ride was just over 20 minutes— not bad!! I would say we waited between 15 and 20 minutes from the time we arrived at the ferry to boarding it. I did think that the ride was slightly expensive. For a family of 3, driving a truck and pulling a standard pop-up camper it cost us $122 for a round trip ticket. However, this wouldn’t deter me from doing this trip again!
Jessica K — Google review
We take pianos out to the island in the spring and retrieve them in the fall. The ferry service is fast and friendly.
John L — Google review
Does what it needed to do! It got us to and from Madeline Island in the time promised, at the times promised. Would recommend. Not that there are options I could even recommend, but you get the point. We were going to take our car until we realized you had to pay the car and also ticket per person. Our reason for going to the island was to ride the Mopeds, so the car wasn’t necessary in the end anyway.

Coffee shop
Located in the charming town of Bayfield, Wonderstate Coffee is a must-visit spot for coffee enthusiasts. The shop offers a variety of organic coffee beans and delightful sweet coffee concoctions, such as the Salted Caramel Cold Brew and homemade maple latte. In addition to their exceptional drinks, they also serve delicious food pairings like lox and granola.
A busy coffee shop in the heart of Bayfield. I am not a coffee aficionado however I always love the matcha and seasonal drinks here. It is always busy but service is excellent and well organized. They have a good selection of beans to buy and some gift items. There is always plenty of seating. The only thing to watch is the hours can be a little erratic out of season!
Sarah — Google review
Cute little coffee shop downtown! The food is a little pricey- a bagel sandwich was $12 and with meat it was $14.50. The bagels were a little firm and crunch, but the egg and garlic aioli was delicious. The iced latte was great and came out super fast! They have a good selection of beverages and house made sandwiches in their refrigerator in the front. They also have some fresh pastries such as muffins and scones.
Hannah M — Google review
I was so happy to find this local coffee house. The coffee and chai are excellent. The baked goods are all homemade. I love the scones and the muffins. The staff was friendly. Cute little shop with nice atmosphere.

Absolutely loved this coffee shop! I’ve tried their coffee with my Trade coffee membership and it’s delicious. It was great to find this coffee shop while in town. I had the iced mocha and it was amazing. I subbed oak milk. Definitely recommend this place. They have cute merch too for sale and I saw they were voted roaster of the year.

At Wonderstate Coffee in Bayfield I had a delicious hot chai latte, a toasted everything bagel and a cardamom cookie. I enjoyed everything including the atmosphere. It was the only place open at 7AM on Saturday.

Order taker was great, but others Not friendly at all. Coffee was good and received quickly. but the food took for ever. I wish there was another coffee shop.
Shamil R — Google review
Where do I start. The coffee itself is fantastic and prepared properly as expected...just like the other Wonderstate locations downstate. Just like the cafe in Madison the staff is announcing the seating area is closing 1 hour before closing time and they are pushing you out the door. I know when you close and I'm going to be gone before you do so let me stay and warn me 15 minutes before you are closing. Pay your staff the extra it requires for them to clean AFTER you close and help make the customers feel valued. Next, there are two drinks in the coffee world that should ALWAYS be served in a demitasse (tiny ceramic/porcelain cup) am espresso shot and a traditional espresso macchiato. You all should know that because you work at an upscale roaster's coffee shop. I didn't ask for the cup with my macchiato because I shouldn't have to so I got a paper cup. Then, you serve my friend the last 1/4 cup of brewed coffee as a free cup with purchase of 2 bags of coffee? Yes, you brewed another fresh one for him and he actually liked that one. The flavor profiles were quite different. So...make fresh coffee. Seems like general laziness from staff. The only location of Wonderstate worth going to is Viroqua.
Troy T — Google review
Be prepared to wait! They are not equipped to handle multiple orders at once. We spent about 25$ on two coffees and a pastry. The rhubarb matcha was good! Just the extremely slow service was disappointing.

Great food here! Best pizza I’ve had. Prices were very reasonable, staff was friendly and the food came out so fast. We had breakfast and dinner here. The eggs Benedict with trout was delicious! As well as the raspberry danish French toast. I can’t recommend this place enough. Can’t wait to come back here when we’re in town next!

This place was such a pleasant surprise! When we walked in, the atmosphere gave me a Soup/Sandwich/Salad kind of vibe. We were greeted warmly and seated right away. When I saw the menu I loved seeing all the options… and options for hearty meals! 🥾After hiking 7 miles during the day, and eating cold sandwiches, see a full menu of fabulously yummy options made me so happy! If you are dietary restricted, there is plenty of menu items you can select so that you can eat and be full. 🥰 The restaurant is clean, service was attentive and helpful, and the food is delicious! Next trip to Bayfield, we will be back!💯

We had a fantastic breakfast at the Many Penny Bistro in Bayfield. The food was outstanding! The seafood omelet was phenomenal, and the eggs Benedict were perfectly cooked. For the sides, the hash browns were perfectly crispy. We also loved the raspberry fritter French toast, but my favorite was the wild rice and raspberry toast. Many Penny Bistro is a must-try for breakfast if you're in the area!

This is an amazing restaurant option in Bayfield. We visited for dinner on back to back days. Great food. Good vegetarian options. Loved their veggie pizza, black bean burger and Alfredo pasta. The bartender made us mocktails even though it wasn't on the menu based on the "Bayfield Sunrise" cocktail. Would highly recommend this restaurant.
Kannan D — Google review
Loved it. I always come here when I am in Bayfield guaranteed to be good. I am never disappointed. The service was excellent we had a young guy. He was very patient & very polite like most people in Wisconsin are. I live in Wisconsin. I had the crispy chicken wrap which they fried. It was excellent I wish I could get one in Polk county where I live. The bar & restaurant is adorable. I posted some pictures. Prices are reasonable for Bayfield. Wisconsin is reasonable @ restaurants generally.

What an adorable local restaurant. I ate at this location twice during a recent trip to Bayfield. Quite an large variety of options. I had pizza on one visit. It was delicious. The ingredients were fresh and they did not skimp on the toppings. The server did a nice job checking with me to see if I needed anything. On my second visit, I had a delicious burger. Again, the food was really good. The server was friendly. I think the decor is really cute. It was a cozy atmosphere. I want to visit the area again and will stop by this location for another meal.

Wonderful restaurant. Pizza fries were great. And the whitefish liver was great and unique. Tasted a bit like fried beef to me which was unexpected and went well with the veggies they served it with. Highly recommend.

We just visited Bayfield and ate here both nights in a row! Everything was so delicious, friendly staff, spacious dining area, and was a very comfortable place to be with a toddler. The fries were possibly the best fries I’ve ever eaten and my husband said the white fish was great. Highly recommend!

The rooms are updated and modern with great overlooks of the lake. Literally, just one block from the water - you can get no closer. The restaurant is great, too. The inside restaurant has big windows allowing one to watch the waves while eating breakfast - try the stuffed French toast, it's to die for. The patio is amazing for a libation or two in the evening. Great place, great food in an awesome little town by the lake.

The Bayfield Inn is a stylish spot for breakfast, perfectly located in the heart of the city with stunning views of the lake and pier right from the dining area. While the space isn't overwhelmingly large, it feels open and thoughtfully designed, offering plenty of seating and ample window views for everyone to enjoy a peaceful, scenic morning. The ambiance strikes a balance between chic and cozy, making it an ideal place to start the day. The breakfast menu suited my taste perfectly—well-curated, with a good mix of classics and unique options. My meal was prepared quickly, and the staff were efficient, friendly, and genuinely enthusiastic. Overall, I really enjoyed my visit. It not only made my breakfast decision for tomorrow an easy one, but it also gave me the chance to try something new. Highly recommended!

I stopped in to grab dinner. I was early and had no problem getting a table. The server was quick to come over and get my drink order. I had the blackened whitefish with mixed vegetables and garlic potatoes. It was really delicious! The meal comes with a side salad that was fresh and very tasty with cranberries and nuts on top. The hot roll was very yummy. The brand old fashioned was super good. Server was very kind and engaged in some small talk with me. I loved the food and the ambiance. I want to return when their rooftop patio is open. I bet it is fabulous sitting there watching the sunset. Cute location. Highly recommend.

I can't say anything about the rooms but the food is amazing. It's all home made from scratch. All unique, very fresh. I can't believe I been going to pier plaza for 10 years and just tried this place. This is my new favorite place to go in Bayfield.
Tim S — Google review
We ordered the fish fry and were very disappointed. The white fish fillets were extremely thin and overcooked, while the fries were soggy. We sat on the upper deck, which had a beautiful view, but that couldn't make up for the poor quality of the food and the lack of service from the staff. I'm sorry to say, we won't be back.
Donna T — Google review
We stayed recently for our first visit to Bayfield, which is a great little town. We were Jacuzzi suite in the basement because that was all that was available. We moved to a smaller and less expensive room after our first night given the amount of noise from the restaurant that is immediately above the room. It continued until about 10 PM and started again at 6:50 AM with chairs scraping on the floor constantly right above our beds. If the Jacuzzi suites are all that is available, I would book a different location. The front desk service let me know multiple rooms were available, and then said she would need to charge me for an additional night to move to a smaller less expensive room. After reaching out to the manager, she did let us know that they would not charge us but that shouldn’t have even been a consideration.
Terri L — Google review
Due to a wedding that booked most of the main building we were in the Isaac Wing. We got a very nice room with a view of the lake that, on our first night, featured a night of distant lighting followed by an early morning thunderstorm (4am) - very cool! Staff were great, quick check-in. Good weather here while heat advisory inland.
Dave W — Google review
I had a reservation at the Garden Guest House. When the hotel called to confirm my reservation, I was told there was a microwave in the room. Calling this room an economy room is a joke. No microwave. Coffee maker was broke. Any little noise in the rooms above were magnified in this room. Anyone showering or using the toilet in the other rooms were clearly heard. Talk about getting no sleep. The staff at the hotel were more concerned about the other staff rather than the guests. My favorite part of the conversation with the front desk manager was when she started saying she has worked there for 5 years. I immediately asked how was it that she didn't know the room didn't have a microwave. They also need to find a better cleaning service. When we arrived, the sink was full of stubble. Really gives you confidence that anything was actually cleaned.

Set in the Queen Anne Victorian home overlooking Lake Superior, it provides a unique atmosphere with stunning views of Bayfield. The restaurant prides itself on using locally sourced ingredients to create exquisite cuisine. Guests have raved about the delicious food and friendly service, making it a must-visit dining destination in Bayfield, Wisconsin.
We dined here on a Monday night. Food was excellent. We ordered the airplane chicken tasting menu and tricolor gnocchi with shrimp.

We made a reservation only after confirming by phone that the restaurant could accommodate dietary restrictions (vegetarian + gluten free). The reassurance we received over the phone - and the advertisement of “vegetarian options available” and “We’re happy to accommodate special dietary needs with advance notice.” - were in stark contrast to the actual dining experience we had. The menu had NO vegetarian entrees. One of the vegetarians in our group ordered the pasta - modified to come without the shrimp. Our server, who seemed frustrated with my dietary restrictions, reluctantly checked with the chef and the only vegetarian + gluten free option they came back with was to order the seared ahi tuna without the ahi tuna (no joke) - which meant that I had a dinner of rice and vegetables. It was delicious as far as rice and stir fried veggies go, but I was expecting more supportive service, a bit of culinary creativity…. and understanding that a vegetarian entree still needs a protein.

Wife and I were camping nearby and I owed her a nice meal out. Booked a table at the Rittenhouse, not sure what to expect. Initially, wasn't impressed with the menu, but our server (Jack) provided details that encouraged us. We each had great meals. I want to call out the fish chowder - absolutely the best!!! Kudos to Chef Carlos. The $38 bottle of French Bordeaux was an amazingly good deal too. We left, very satisfied with the experience.

Great small Deli. I had a Burito and it was creamy and full of flavours. My wife got smoked trout sandwich. It was good. My daughter got a bacon and cheese sandwich. If you want a quick snack, lunch etc in Bayfield, WI, this is a great place!!! Place is small, no dining in.

Don’t get the burrito bowl! It costs $3 more than a burrito and it is the size of a side of salsa. The owner was rude and told me “goodbye” when I told her that it was misleading when she told me the burrito bowl has more food than a regular burrito. I’m in hospitality and would never treat a customer that way.

Using fresh ingredients sourced from Lake Superior and Northern Wisconsin, the restaurant prides itself on delivering authentic flavors in every dish.
Stopped early for dinner with not wait for a table. Had the smoked trout crostini with lemon sauce. Had a light smoke flavor and crispy bread. The tortellini with beef tips was nicely flavored and the mushroom pasta was good. Dessert was a huge piece of carrot cake and a chocolate marquis with ice cream. Service staff were friendly and prompt.

We went on a Tuesday at 5:30, waited about 5 min for a table and were sat down. For an app I ordered the Whitefish Chowder which was a nice, sweet chowder compared to a traditional clam chowder. For the meal I ordered the Grilled Whitefish and it was lovely, a nicely grilled and nicely seasoned piece of tender fish, and the veggies and rice were cooked to perfection. Worth the wait to get a table! Was definitely one of the nicest meals we had in Bayfield!

One of the best places to eat in the area and certainly the best in Bayfield that we have eaten at. Service by Zoe was great and she was happy and energetic and helpful. Food…Delicious. We had numerous items and all were great, flavorful, well balanced dishes. Anyone who doesn’t try the special is a fool because mine was excellent. We had the… Whitefish Tacos Wild Mushroom Bruschetta Superior Chowder Superior Supreme Pizza Basil Pesto with Lamb chops, Cherry Tomatoes over Fettuccini Lemon Cheesecake Pecan Ball (think turtle sundae)

Stop here! The most amazing part of this experience...our server Crystal! She was SO hospitable, kind, hilarious and made our night! Ask for her when you go! The food? Delicious! My personal faves of the night were the mushroom 🍄 bruschetta and the mushroom pasta! Wow. I highly reccomend them both. Surprisingly the fish soup just tasted like ham? Otherwise...I highly recommend this experience and you should stop in!

Wow! Outstanding communication between the staff. Super busy, long wait list around 5-6pm, but by golly worth it. Our server was quick to bring us our drinks and attended us throughout the meal despite the dinner rush. The trout was moist, fresh, and full of flavor. I would definitely eat here if you’re in the area.

Went for dinner on a Tuesday. No reservations, wait was nearly one hour but their pagers allow you to go up to 3 blocks from the restaurant. Service was great. Alicia was friendly and got our order entirely correct. Mushroom bruschetta appetizer and the whitefish cakes were delicious. Whitefish in entrees was mildly ‘fishy’ tasting. The sausage tortellini was favorite entree of all ordered at our table. Dessert… yum. Carrot cake looked to die for and strawberry rhubarb pie was totally delicious. If I could give 4.5 stars I would, mainly because of the fish. For a small-town restaurant, they do an excellent job and food is pretty darn good!

The Copper Trout in the boutique town of Bayfield, Wisconsin is an outstanding farm-to-table restaurant showcasing locally-sourced ingredients and innovative cuisine that celebrates the flavors and culinary traditions of the region. Smoked Trout Crostini is incredible! Thank you.

Our experience with The Copper Trout was above and beyond what we expected! Our choice of meals were outstanding. I had the tortellini sausage pasta and cheese curds and my wife choose the wild mushroom pasta with salad and fish chowder soup, neither one of us were not disappointed, it was soooooo delicious and well worth the stop 😋 many other menu items to choose from! Enjoy 😉
