Japanese restaurant
Nuka is a sleek Japanese venue offering a diverse menu of small plates, sushi, specialty rolls, and a variety of drinks. Located in the sleepy North Shore town of Haiku, it's popular among locals for its seriously fresh sushi and izakaya-style eats. The restaurant serves unique twists on traditional rolls like the Lollipop roll and offers Asian-inspired dishes such as wasabi fries.
As we went to the Road of Hana to explore the Twin Falls we discovered this Japanese restaurant was on the way there. Food was excellent. Cute little place. Staffs were wonderful. Sashimi was fresh. Our tummy satisfied.

Nuka in Haiku offers a cozy, stylish setting with a menu that leans into Japanese classics. While the sushi and rolls were just okay — fresh but not particularly memorable — the meat skewers really stood out. Perfectly grilled and full of flavor, they were a great surprise and easily one of the best parts of the meal. The real highlight, though, was the miso cod - buttery, tender, and deeply satisfying. It alone is worth coming for. Service was solid and the space has a nice ambiance, making it a good choice if you’re in the area and looking for a relaxed dinner with some standout bites.
JonLuca D — Google review
Delicious sushi spot upcountry. My first time dining at Nuka was outstanding. The highly quality of the fish was noticeable. Everything was fresh and absolutely delicious. We sat at the sushi bar and the sushi chefs were very warm and friendly. The service from our waitress was okay- she wasn’t the friendliest. Our food came out quickly after placing our order which was awesome because we were hungry! We didn’t have a reservation upon arrival and waited about 15 minutes for a party of two. Its indoor dining only and the space is on the smaller side. There is sushi bar seating as well (about 10 spots). We enjoyed the ceviche and mocktails from their evening specials menu, along with the dragonfly roll, maguro nigiri and ahi salad from their regular menu. We’ll definitely be back.
Melinda — Google review
Dined here many many times. The food was always amazing, some of my favorite cocktails, and there has almost always been high quality fish. The waitlist operation is inconvenient, but if you’re willing to get through that then bear in mind you will be treated unkindly by the servers. On multiple occasions I have had horrible service. It’s hard to say how many times i’ve actually enjoyed any service i’ve received here aside from the people that ran the food. Servers are miserable, rude, stuck up, and they do not have any sense of recovery after being rude. It’s unfortunate that I don’t have it in me to leave a bad tip so i’ll always leave 20%, but after my last negative interaction, I will never be returning. It’s unfortunate as the food and drinks are great, sushi chefs are talented, the food runners are nice and friendly, but your server staff is consistently rude and ruins the entire experience. Don’t come here if you want decent service.

Before Nuka, this place used to be a Napa store and before that a mini market store. ATMOSPHERE: They're located in a free-standing building on Haiku Road just across the street from the Haiku Cannery mall with lots of free parking. The Asian decor fits the restaurant perfect. It's a small open-air room that fits maybe 50 people max, with regular tables and sushi bar seating. RESERVATIONS: They don't take reservations so be prepared to wait during peak dinner hours especially on the weekend. FAVE FOODS: Karaage Chicken Very small portion but very really good. The chicken was very tender and the light karaage batter was delish. Chicken Katsu Donburi I am a fan of this place after eating this dish! The rice is laced with a sweet/salty soy flavor, topped with a over-hard fried egg cooked in the same sauce, topped with deep fried & super tender chicken katsu strips and finished off with thinly sliced nori. DEELISH! Tempura Shrimp Udon I simply love noodles, so this was an easy decision for my second time here. The broth is a bit sweet but very good (I am NOT a fan of sweet broths but this was an exception). Accompanied by a generous amount of shrimp, green bean, onion and mushroom tempura. Ahi Katsu Donburi Delicious rice dish flavored with a sweet-soy seasoning which is topped with an over-hard fried egg, and chunks of breaded and seared ahi. I personally would've liked to have the ahi cooked all the way through which would make the dish more visually pleasing, though it's still very good overall. Portion size is perfect. SERVICE: Everyone has been great all these years. OVERALL: Maui's best Japanese restaurant.
Maui T — Google review
Food is always delicious, definitely my favorite restaurant on Maui… Our service last night went above and beyond, had a great time and enjoyed every bit of it.
Lelia — Google review
I've been to Nuka twice. Once a few years ago (it was excellent), and this past weekend (it was not). Service: We showed up a few minutes after they opened and scored one of the few open tables. We sat for 10-15 minutes waiting to place a drink order. What we later learned was our server was busy with a table seated after us. I had to ask a different employee for our server. She eventually arrived and didn't apologize for the delay. The service from this point was ok...clumsy, not horrible, but def. not gracious. Cocktails were delivered with no napkin to absorb the sweat off the glass. I've worked the front of the house in fine dining and It felt like the staff receive minimal training, and are delivering food as they would bowls of cereal to their children. Lots of staff only carrying 1-2 items at a time - ie a lack of efficiency. Food: This was better. We tried the miso butterfish, a tempura appetizer on the specials menu, and a variety of sashimi and sushi. These were well prepared, and made up for feeling like they didn't care if we were there or not. Salmon sashimi was not fresh, and remained on the platter after it was sampled. The remainder was fresh and tasty. Summary: Due to it's location and status as the only sushi restaurant for miles, I think management has decided they are busy and customer service doesn't need to be prioritized. That's true until it isn't, and competition appears. Our bill for two came to nearly $250. Did we feel like we got our money's worth and look forward to returning? No.

I literally flew a few thousand miles to eat here again! Bradley.. great to see you again and you always blow it out of the water! Food & service at the sushi bar were outstanding.. if you have ever been here before you know that this is an experience in itself.

Pauwela Cannery is a hidden gem located just off the Hana Highway in Maui. While it's popular among locals, it has plenty to offer for visitors as well. The cannery houses various businesses and artisan workshops, creating a unique and vibrant atmosphere. Visitors can explore the diverse shops, including a bakery with top-notch treats and the first Dakine store. Additionally, there's a funky hardware store, a small grocery store, and even a spot for getting your board repaired.
Great atmosphere with excellent couple of shops built into the cannery area. Nestled into a neighborhood on Maui, but right off one of the main roads. The bakery was top notch, we visited every day of our trip. It is also home the the first Dakine store, which is a great visit if you have ever used, worn and just wondered about their products.

The hardware store is great, really helpful staff. Baked on Maui has great food and prices are not outrageous.

If there's a better spot in all of Haiku, I don't know. The store's great (a whole shelf of Argentinian delights! On an island! In the jungle! IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PACIFIC), and you can get lost walking around the hallways and visiting the artisan workshops. I love hanging out here.

Baked on Maui is delicious. Hardware store is funky and useful. Gramps is the best place around to get your board repaired! Has a small grocery store too and other kine stuffs.
Brooke M — Google review
I've been going to the cannery for over 30 years ( there used to be a video store back in da day) they provide a service by renting out spaces to businesses, artists, they also used to have da best dumpster diving until they locked their dumpsters. I hate people that make and leave a mess when diving, or all those prior people who have sued companies for their own clumsiness, they are the reason so many businesses lock their dumpsters. Used to be you could furnish your house out of what people threw away...Just saying..

Haiku Marketplace, situated at the Haiku Cannery, serves as the central point of the Haiku Community. It houses a grocery store, hardware store, restaurants and food trucks, a bike shop, fitness centers, day spas and more. The historic pineapple cannery has been transformed into a bustling hub over 37 years. Visitors can enjoy diverse dining options including food trucks. Additionally, with the adjacent refurbished Cannery across Kokomo Road, one can find everything they need in downtown Haiku.
Haiku Marketplace is a wonderful collection of shops, services, and restaurants located in a historic old pineapple cannery in the heart of Haiku Maui. I've seen it transform from basically an abandoned old shell into a thriving community over the past 37 years. We love that there are so many good dining options here in Haiku nowadays, including various food trucks. With the adjacent refurbished Cannery across Kokomo Road, you can pretty much find everything you need right here in downtown Haiku. The population is rapidly growing in this part of Maui, and there will be more shops opening up to serve the needs of the community. Plenty of free parking and easy access... and now in 2018 you can plug in an electric car to charge while you eat at Colleen's.

Ho'okipa Beach Park is a spacious state park and surfing spot with a beautiful white sand beach, picnic areas, and pavilions. It's located along Hana Highway and is famous for windsurfing and contemporary surfing. Visitors can watch surfers from the Hookipa Lookout or enjoy the beach where Hawaiian green sea turtles often come to rest on the shore.
Cool beach to watch the surfers and the wind surfers. Less so for swimming. The bonus as you get to see lots of sea turtles. Nobody follows the rules and doesn’t keep a 10 foot distance as they should even though the section is cordoned off. So sad to see that people can not read simple instructions. Well worth going to this cool beach. Free parking and lots of locals so it must be good right?!
Samir B — Google review
Good parking and nice to sit and watch the surfers. It’s beautiful to look at because of the turtles and the ocean! But it is not a swimming beach. And it is good for surfing only if you are a well-seasoned surfer. Lots of rocks at the shore!
Rovi B — Google review
Beautiful beach to see the sea turtles, watch surfers in action and just enjoy what the ocean has to offer. A little too rough for snorkeling or a relaxing dip, but fun for buggie boarding and offers a pretty view for the sunset.
Arielle P — Google review
Great beach. The ability to stay up top or go down on the beach is really nice. There are showers here. There are lots of surfers and people who know where they are going and what they're doing. Still great to visit and just chill.
Natalie C — Google review
Good parking, easy to walk down. We went just to see the turtles resting on the beach which was easy because there are a ton just laying there plain to see. Photos are good to take and the beach looked clean although we didn’t go on it. Not much else to say, but it is cool to see all the turtles just hanging out if you’re in the area.
Amber L — Google review
Nice long park along the ocean with some beach but the environment lends itself to attract the surfing crowd. Lot of boards and windsurfing taking place with a pretty consistent surf coming off the windward side of Maui. There are bathrooms and shelters available from the sun. The park is right outside Paia at the start of the Road to Hana. Plenty of parking if the beach area is not overly crowded. Enjoy the experience!
Mike S — Google review
Visited Ho'okipa beach park as part of the road to Hana tour with my partner in May 2023. We loved the beach park, specially all the sea turtles we saw. The views of the west Maui mountains from the beach were stunning. The sea wasn't too rough closer into the beach when we visited, so probably would be good for swimming and snorkeling. May not be suitable for kids with there being alot of rocks at the edge of the water, I think the sea is usually a bit rougher though. So maybe lucky and can could snorkeling or swimming if it's not too rough, Surfing is popular though a bit further out but probably for more experienced surfers though. The beach park has ample parking, restrooms, showering facilities and pic-nic tables with some sheltered from the sun etc. So if your in the area or on your way or back from the Hana tour even if it's not for long. I would highly recommend visiting Ho'okipa beach park, even just to see the turtles resting on the beach Remember and give the turtles plenty of space, there are usually markers to give them there space. I would definitely go back if I visit Maui in the future, Steve and Jacqui fae Fife.

Great beach and lots of turtles. Don’t go near them since they are exhausted after a day long of swimming in the ocean. Please maintain 10 feet distance

If you're an animal enthusiast visiting Maui, a guided tour of Leilani Farm Sanctuary is an absolute must. Nestled in Haiku on the North Shore, this non-profit refuge was founded by Laurelee Blanchard to provide a safe haven for animals that have faced abuse and abandonment. The sanctuary thrives thanks to its dedicated volunteers who pour their hearts into caring for the diverse array of animals, including countless cats and other rescued creatures.
This was one of the most magical experiences I’ve had on Maui. The serenity and peacefulness of the location surpassed my expectations. All the animals were so well taken care of and friendly. It truly was a piece of heaven on earth.

This was an amazing experience! Cannot recommend it enough. Super fun to get to see such an authentic lifestyle and meet animals who are so grateful to be rescued! You get to see so many things you cannot find anywhere else!
Kaitlyn H — Google review
This was a cool experience off the beaten path. These animals are all rescues that are cared for by volunteers and the owner of the property. For $50 each they take you on a tour of the property and teach you about the animals and where they were rescued from. Then they allow you to stay and meet the animals and spend time with them. Ample parking, portable bathroom in the parking lot. There were guinea pigs, tortoises, turkeys, cats, goats, chickens and more.

The cutest and family friendly animal sanctuary ever. Brought my two kids with me and we absolutely loved our tour host, she was the sweetest and the animals And the entire place is amazing

I cannot imagine a more serene and beautiful place than this animal sanctuary. So many friendly animals and a wonderful tour lead by Danielle, who described each animal's story of how they ended up at the sanctuary and taught us about many of the native plants growing there.

We took a farm tour with Danielle and she was so friendly and knowledgeable! We loved meeting so many animals and exploring the beautiful grounds of the sanctuary.

Fun for all ages, especially for anyone who has not had much experience with farm animals. Our guide Danielle was exceptionally patient with the guests and radiated genuine love and care for each of the animals. We stayed long past the tour to cuddle cats and take photos on the stunningly beautiful property.

Vegetarian restaurant
Veg Out is a laid-back cafe in Haiku, Hawaii that has been offering vegetarian and vegan dishes to locals and visitors since 2000. The casual spot serves up an international menu of meatless options for dining in or takeout. Customers can enjoy a variety of dishes such as the Muffuletta Sandwich, featuring tofu breaded with nutritional yeast on a focaccia roll with olive spread, lettuce, tomato, and onion.
Looks like a vegan/vegetarian place on the road to somewhere remote. The food was pretty good. I had a greek salad minus the feta, and husband and I had the Pad Thai. I don’t usually have Pad Thai because of the fish sauce but I think this one didn’t have that as my husband confirmed. He always gets a Pad Thai every Thai place we go. This one passed the test for him. We also ordered the Falafel wrap to go. First place we’ve found where the food wasn’t killer expensive.

got off 2 connecting flights one from dallas to seattle and seattle to maui, and this was the first place we sat down to eat after 12 hours of being on a flight. the two guys working there were so so kind and friendly with the questions we had and when we asked for recommendations. service was also super quick and the food was incredible!! the korma tasted so authentic to maui combining hawaii and india together. so so flavorful and the enchilada, middle eastern plate, and the etsalada salad were super good!! thank you for such great service and food!! :)

You won’t regret this place.

This is the place to go for an excellent -relatively quick- meal that your body wont regret later. Sporting a completely vegetarian menu Veg Out brings a variety of dishes to table from Mediterranean to Mexican options. The staff seems to be small, as I am often greeted by a friendly familiar face each time I visit. I love coming here! Veg Out always provide consistent and delicious meals- the burrito being one of my favorite and the burger taking a close second. This humble little spot is sure to leave you feeling full, and satisfied.

We had lunch at Veg Out today and were pleasantly surprised by how good it was. The falafel wrap was very good, nice balance of the falafel and veggies, and a light but tasty sauce for it. My wife enjoyed her"steak" sandwich and commented how good the bread was. We look forward to going back and trying the muffaletta.

Hana Hou Cafe offers a diverse all-day Hawaiian menu with hints of French and Thai flavors, served in a laid-back setting complete with a charming patio and live music performances six nights a week. Despite stumbling upon it by chance, visitors were pleasantly surprised by the exceptional food and vibrant atmosphere. The cafe is known for its well-prepared specials, such as local fish and Moroccan lamb dishes, which received high praise from self-proclaimed "foodies.
Stumbled onto the Hana Ho Cafe when the restaurant across the street that was recommended to us was closed. My wife and I consider ourselves "foodies", so we don't make complements like this lightly, but the Hana Ho Cafe serves excellent food. They have live music 6 nights a week. We went on a Monday night and the place was two thirds full, for good reason. We ordered two of their specials, a local fish and a Morraccan lamb dish. Both were perfectly prepared. It's too bad we discovered this place on our last night in Hawaii. Don't miss it if you're on Maui!

Tasty little spot on Kokomo road, my girlfriend and I stopped in for dinner after driving the (harrowing) Hanã highway. Service was great however the menu was a bit bland. They do have some Hawaiian options which we didn't try. I had the tempura Ono (Wahoo) which was ok but missed the point of tempura, more like something you might find wrapped in news print outside a London chippy. Also the sides that accompanied it were white rice and macaroni salad... A fresh green salad would have been great! Reasonable price and great service plus local beers on tap but not worth seeking out.
Andrew P — Google review
I gave a low rating not based on the food or service which I never got to experience, but because the hours posted on here are not correct. I showed up for breakfast and the owner was vacuuming and said they don't do breakfast anymore. Also there are no hours posted on the building or online that I could find reflecting this so I was really bummed in drove all the way out to the area from kihei and couldn't even eat here. Too bad.

Moana Bakery & Cafe, located in the unexpected spot of Paia, stands out for its chic interior with concrete floors and high ceilings. The cafe offers a diverse menu created by chef Don Ritchey, known for his exceptional culinary skills. Despite its unassuming exterior, the cafe surprises visitors with its inviting ambiance and live music performances. Patrons praise the outstanding food selection that includes soups, salads, appetizers, main courses, and desserts.
My girlfriend and I are locals and have eaten here many times. The food, service and atmosphere always exceeds our expectations. We were in Paia between Xmas and New Years. We wanted a nice sit down dinner for 6. The Paia Fish Market and Flatbread were jammed and incredibly noisy. We just happened upon Moana. It had a great ambience and a good local musician. Most importantly--the food was outstanding from start to finish. Our group had a variety of soups, salads, appetizers, main courses, and desserts. It was the nicest dinner we have had in some time, not just in Hawaii, but anywhere. The soups were to die for.

My son and I walked in on a Sunday June 9th.. We waited at the door for about 30 seconds there was a waitress near the bakery showcase... did not acknowledge us. There was not sing at the entry saying "please wait to be seated" so we chose a table by the window.. There must of been only 10 people dining.. and about 6 employees at the back counter.. No one noticed we were there. We waited about 4 minutes.. nothing .. there was a waitress who came to the table next door which was empty and started arranging the salt shakers.. then came the waitress who was originally at the entrance and helped the other waitress set the table next door and arrange chairs.. So we said I guess you guys are too busy to serve us.. so we walke out and left.. The front waitress had the nerve to not even apologize and say... Wlell you have to wait to be sat... terrible for Maui.. terrible for word of mouth adveerising.. Sorry Moana this is the 3rd time I tried you ... been here over 20 years and now I know why your place is half empty... We proceeded to Des Amis across the street .. great attitude , great food , great atmoshphere... We got served withing 15 minutes..

Nestled in a former pineapple cannery, Colleen's At the Cannery is a hidden gem in Haiku-Pauwela, Maui. This cozy spot offers organic New American cuisine with three hearty meals daily and a popular happy hour. Despite its unassuming exterior, it transforms into an intimate setting at night, perfect for enjoying martinis and fresh fish dishes.
It was my first time having lunch here, and we picked a good time. We got there at 1:00 and got a corner "booth". Sarah and Josie both helped us out with taking our food and drink orders and bringing them out to us. Miles made us a delicious grilled Mahi salad, the best chicken salad sandwich I can remember having, and a grilled chicken sandwich. Oh, and the ginger mint tea was absolutely refreshing. Tucked in 'downtown' Haiku (Country vibe), this restaurant is a locals' favourite but visitors are certainly welcome because the entire staff is friendly, cheerful and welcoming. We stopped in to see the area and found this place. Very quaint and friendly. We ordered a tuna melt and the upcountry beef burger. Both were perfectly prepared and fresh. We shared an order of fries as the portion was very generous. Love the crispy battered fries. We picked up a couple of pastries for the road as they looked great and tasted just as great for breakfast the next day. Highly recommended.

Wow, I never knew a restaurant of this caliber would be found in Haiku! Luckily we were invited to dinner by a close friend. ATMOSPHERE: Small & cozy. Don't let the exterior of the mall deter you. FOOD: Vodka Penne I liked it a tad better than the version at Marcos because it wasn't over powered with garlic. Flavor was good - savory, cheesy and not overly sweet. I would opt for linguine pasta next time as I'm not a fan of tube pastas. SERVICE: Fast, efficient & friendly. Reservations are recommended because its a small place.

Food is always delicious, definitely my favorite restaurant on Maui… Our service last night went above and beyond, had a great time and enjoyed every bit of it.
