Military Museums
The Fort Dalles Museum and Anderson Homestead is a historical gem in Oregon, housed in the former officers quarters of the 1856 Fort Dalles military compound. It boasts a rich collection of pioneer and military artifacts, including an impressive display of antique wagons in the outbuildings. The museum offers a fascinating journey through Pacific Northwest history, with remnants of the old fort preserved as both an outdoor and indoor museum.
Fort Dalles is a great place to visit! The buildings are very interesting and full of history. An older gentleman at the entrance told us a lot about the house and its past. It was very informative and fun to listen to. It's amazing how some things have changed in their use, yet the appearance has remained almost the same. It truly feels like a journey back in time. If you are in the area, don’t miss this museum! It’s a special trip into the past — and it’s hard to believe that all of this happened just 125 to 150 years ago.

I had so much fun at this museum. We walked through the gate and our first greeter was a sweet cat named Midnight (she likes belly rubs) when we were done living on her, we met the staff. They were knowledgeable and very friendly. They helped make the experience amazing. I even learned something new!
Felicia A — Google review
Friendly docent. Nice selection of old vehicles. Great old bldgs and exhibits on pioneer life. Friendly kitty
Grady W — Google review
Great source of history, the volunteer was full of information and stories. A great place to take the family or have a picnic. They even have an old electric car, see photos. All in all a great stop for families and history buffs
Patrick T — Google review
Very nice worth a visit. I really enjoyed the old car collection
George D — Google review
Didn't pay to go into the buildings but did tour the grounds and see the many wagons and carriages
Jason M — Google review
Bob is amazing. Very knowledgeable and keeps the museum in beautiful repair. Worth the time to visit when you are in the area.
Craig L — Google review
Addendum: The place has new owners. I met them. They are amazing! The entire place has had an overhaul. Almost nothing is the same. They are restoring it and taking items out as well as putting different items in. It's more like a house now. I posted the new look on here. I had a bunch of amazing photos on here from years ago. Unfortunately they have been removed or something. I am a psychic. We went here to enjoy history and be more aware of it. This museum is the actual house where a doctor resided. The design and the history are rich. Staff here are so welcoming, absolutely delightful. They are accepting of all types of visitors, even MY TYPE. I got so many readings from this property. And most were extreme. Stuff I can't post on here. Beautiful house! Beautiful displays. Areas you can touch, the house itself is pristine. The grounds are immaculate. They also have an antique garage. This garage holds 2 carriages that were specific for funerals. They carried the bodies, right down the road, to the cemetery.

Sunshine Mill boasts one of the most distinctive tasting rooms, located in a former wheat mill with remnants of its industrial past. The space has been transformed into a cheerful and cozy lounge while retaining the old machinery and workbenches. It was the first building in The Dalles to use electricity, housing the Thomas Edison motor that can still be seen today.
Omg what a gem!!! Can’t wait to bring my friends & fam here. Sooo cute! Anna really took care of me & was so knowledgeable about the wine. Very cozy & plenty of unique seating for everyone to enjoy. Will be back!
Christina P — Google review
Went there with my daughter, granddaughter, and my sons lady friend. Did the wine flight and charcuterie boards. Great place, decor, and food/wine. Enjoyed our ladies' afternoon.
Don H — Google review
We were at the Sunshine Mill Winery several years ago and all I can say is, it just keeps getting better! What a unique place for a winery, in an old elevator/bakery. This is a place not to be missed. There are so many little cozy areas to sit and explore. The staff was super friendly and helpful. The wines were very good and so was the food to go along with it. You MUST stop and see this place. It is now our favorite winery and wish we had something like this closer to San Diego.
Michael M — Google review
Great space. We rented a space for our rehearsal dinner and it was perfect for people to mingle in a group or more intimate setting. Loved the decorations!
L S — Google review
The atmosphere was very cool, vintage decor. The staff were friendly yet preoccupied and not very attentive until the end of our visit. The tasting, the wine was great
Siobhan H — Google review
This has got to be a bucket list place to go. It is so unique and quirky, but oh so relaxing too. The tasting are only $10! It is a MUST SEE! I went and they were not that busy, which was really nice because the place was quiet and I sat down with my tray of wine and read a book. After doing so, I did buy the Winemakers White blend which was AMAZING. Their red wines were very bold in my opinion. They do take the $10 and apply it if you buy a wine, so I would reccomend it!
R P — Google review
Great wine, fantastic food, incredibly cool decor, super friendly staff. Edited to add: We just had our wedding at Sunshine Mill last weekend and it could not have gone better. The staff rearranged their entire tasting area to turn it into an amazing dance floor and karaoke area. They worked closely with our other vendors to make sure everything went off without a hitch, and they kept us in the loop during the months leading up to the big day. I can't thank them enough for helping us throw such an amazing party for our family and friends. If you're looking for an affordable but strikingly beautiful and unique wedding venue in the Gorge, definitely pay a visit to Sunshine Mill. You won't be disappointed.
Pat M — Google review
This was a stop on our Valentine's Day tour of Gorge Wineries, and this one had by far the best customer service. Great conversation about the wines and other local things! The serving host told us about a great new state park campground nearby - Cottonwood Canyon - that we hadn't visited before. The wines were good and we couldn't resist buying a couple. The setting is neat as well because of the historic building. Overall a great stop and we will definitely visit again!

Sights & Landmarks
While on a stroll in The Dalles, I came across a magnificent church building known as Old St. Peter's. Despite seeing it countless times from the freeway, standing beside it gave me a new perspective on its grandeur. Although I couldn't explore its interior due to limited tour availability, I learned that there is also a newer St. Peters in town. Nevertheless, the name 'Upon this Rock' beautifully symbolizes the enduring nature of the Church itself.
Beautiful piece of history. Make sure you go see this protected landmark.

Amazing space and place!! Great acoustics and a beautiful place for an event or some music. So awesome that they saved this place so many years ago. Stop by and check it out if you have some time. 😁

The National Neon Sign Museum, opened in 2018 by David Benko, showcases the evolution of electric signs. Housed in a historic three-story Elk Lodge building in The Dalles, the museum features an extensive collection of pre-electric and electric signage, including neon storefront signs and related artifacts. Visitors can explore the simplicity of original signs evolving into multi-colored displays. The museum offers guided tours explaining the mechanics of the lights and allows ample opportunities for photography.
I can’t resist bright or flickering lights so coming by here was inevitable. This is a topic that combines science, graphic design, economics and history. David runs the tours, he’s very passionate and knowledgeable it makes it fun to learn. During my tour he said a display from the museum was his favorite and/or the best one here at least five times and you can tell that he meant it every time. It was a delight to get to learn from him. Also, they’re working on some very cool historical restorations to some old familiar faces. Muzzles?
Louise T — Google review
We had a fantastic experience at the National Neon Museum in The Dalles! The collection is stunning, but what truly made our visit unforgettable was the guided tour by David, the curator. His knowledge and passion for neon art and history were absolutely inspiring. David brought the artform to life—connecting the lights, colors, and craftsmanship to a rich cultural story we never realized neon held. We’re so grateful for his time and the eye-opening experience. Highly recommended for anyone passing through The Dalles!
Nora L — Google review
Awesome displays. Several one of a kind and industry firsts artifacts. Beautifully curated. It was a quiet day and David the proprietor gave us a personal tour.
Amy R — Google review
What a fun visit to the National Neon Sign Museum. We received a warm welcome from the moment we entered. David’s tour was cut short due to a large group that was expected shortly after my mom and I arrived, but David’s knowledge and enthusiasm during our tour was amazing. It was fascinating hearing about the science of neon and the history behind the lights. We loved seeing the old Florida Power and Light sign as my grandfather used to work for Florida Power. I highly recommend visiting this museum while in The Dalles. It will light up your day!
Jill O — Google review
My family and I visited the national neon sign museum today and we had a blast! It is clear that the team really cares about neon signs, and it is so cool to hear about how neon signs are made! It was also very cool to see the Jantzen beach carousel restoration, as I rode it as a child! We will be back!
Treva W — Google review
A wonderful jewel in a very funky old BPOE building in the middle of downtown The Dalles. Fascinating tour led by the passionate and knowledgeable curator and founder, David, is a must, even if you think you don’t want a tour! Beautiful historical items and worth every minute.
Victoria A — Google review
Our Corvette Group visited the museum and had a marvelous time. We learned the history of neon and enjoyed the displays. Upstairs has a floating floor and the Jantzen Beach carousel horses. They are being restored.
Christine L — Google review
We stopped here as per recommendation of a friend. I was particularly interested, as my grandfather made neon signs. I was very impressed with the knowledge and friendliness of the two ladies who guided the tour. The intro video was very informative. The museum includes sections on the history and science behind the neon lit signs, and a variety of vintage signs from all around. The upstairs level was a real treat to see: an entire floor set up to look like store front on a city street. Also it was neat to see the carousel horses being refurbished for the Jantzen Beach carousel. Great tour for a very reasonable price!

Bodies of Water
The Dalles Dam, located on the Columbia River in Oregon, is a significant hydroelectric facility that plays a crucial role in generating renewable energy. This massive structure serves as a barrier, impeding the natural flow of water and creating an artificial reservoir behind it. By harnessing the force of this stored water, the dam produces electricity through turbines, contributing to clean power generation. The construction of this immense dam has brought about notable transformations to the surrounding ecosystem and landscape.

Cafe
The Riv Cafe, located in The Dalles, offers an exceptional dining experience featuring locally sourced ingredients from the surrounding area. Visitors can enjoy a wide array of fresh produce, seafood, and honey at The Dalles Farmers Market held at The Dalles City Park every Saturday from June through mid-October. A delightful meal awaits those with soy and gluten intolerance issues as the cafe provides delicious options that cater to their dietary needs.
I would give the chicken ten stars if Google would let me! What a cool, funky place, with fabulous food! I had a side salad and a piece of chicken, both were excellent. My husband has the BLT and loved it too! We have to say the strawberry smoothie was pretty bland though. We'll be back next time we are in the area...

TLDR; super sweet spot with some really good biscuit sandwiches Food- we ordered one of the biscuit sandwiches on the menu with bacon on the side, and I have to say that it was absolutely delicious. The flavors were so good, the biscuit was crumbly but held everything together really well at the same time. The iced mocha was really nice too. Atmosphere - given that this place used to be a church, I love that they’ve preserved as much as they can. The porch outside also looks like a really nice spot to work.
Pooja C — Google review
Went for lunch on a rainy Tuesday. Pretty quiet inside, which I liked. I got the spicy miso noodle bowl and it was comforting in that warm, steady kind of way. Broth had depth, not just heat. The staff was mellow but not checked out. No real complaints, just wish it was closer to where I live.
Lila C — Google review
I went for a casual lunch. It is counter walk up, then they bring your food to your table. The space was cozy, calm, and nice decorated with mostly tables, but some casual chairs. The food (I got the grilled cheese with bacon and the tomato soup) was delicious and my oatmeal latte was perfect.
Jaime C — Google review
Operating out of a restored, historic church, the Riv Cafe felt very welcoming and spacious, with the scent of breakfast wafting out from the kitchen. The menu offers familiar dishes with a twist: a surprisingly good bagel & lox, made like a dainty sandwich, huevos with black beans, a stacked breakfast burrito, an egg, cheese, and bacon sandwich on choice of breads (French bread for me), lunchtime sammies, berry smoothies and intoxicating coffee, and more. Make it here before noon and you get Benedict. Loved the stained glass windows up front, white everywhere, and pews for seats. They keep it cold during the summer. Might wanna bring a jacket. I also appreciate that they responded to inquiries on Instagram right away. Yes, they serve breakfast until 2 pm closing, except the bennies.

What a gem of a place! Decaf cappuccino was really good. Delicious food options. Spacious and plenty of seating. Kind employees. They have gluten free, vegan, and vegetarian food options (breakfast and lunch vibes).

Smooth coffee. Wonderful scones and an atmosphere to blend into a nice warm morning. The ambience is wonderful and rustic. Comfortable seating all around.

If I could give this place 10 stars, I absolutely would! From the food to the coffee, everything was outstanding. What an unexpected gem! We were just passing through from Washington when we stumbled upon this beautifully remodeled old church, and it was nothing short of phenomenal. The atmosphere was unique and inviting, the flavors were spot on, and every detail felt thoughtfully curated. Highly recommend stopping here—you won’t be disappointed!

Traditional American restaurant
Nestled in the heart of The Dalles, Oregon, Cousins' Restaurant & Saloon is a delightful spot that captures the essence of homestyle dining. With its nostalgic decor and warm atmosphere, it feels like a home away from home for both locals and travelers alike. This charming eatery offers an extensive menu featuring hearty American classics served with love and care. Breakfast enthusiasts will particularly enjoy their signature waffles, including unique options like the Marionberry Waffle and Chicken & Waffle.
Two visits now, and everything has been great both times. Steak & eggs, cinnamon roll french toast, hash browns, the biggest strawberry shortcake of my life… everyone is friendly. I love this place.
K R — Google review
Usually this place is good, but my last experience was so sub part that I can't recommend it. It seems as if management has changed lately and doesn't care anymore. The salad we received was just pieces of lettuce that weren't even prepared and didn't even seem to be washed as one had a bug fly out of it. Prices were really high for the quality of the food with the Mac and cheese tasting like it was reheated in a microwave. The environment of the restaurant felt like it's on its last legs as dishes sat around and Flys buzzed by. Somehow the service was worst than the food with it taking over an hour to get the food. Our server was nice but seemed overwhelmed and was the only one on duty. I've been going here for years and this was an absolutely unacceptable experience bordering on health department violation. I hope management reads this and gets their act together. Cousins has lost my trust and several of my family members that frequent the restaurant and we won't be going back.
Blake J — Google review
We like to have lunch here when was pass through from Washington to Salem, Oregon. The folks were always friendly, the food has been good. It did seem that we waited way longer than our previous visits for our order. The square bread, biscuit.... it crumbles like cornbread, but also feels like cake. Im confused. No taste. I had to add the butter to it to get any flavor. Took our leftovers with us but left that piece of bread.
S S — Google review
We ordered to go… 2 top sirloins with mashed potatoes, chicken & dumplings, & a kids Mac & cheese. They called back to say there were no mashed potatoes or chicken & dumplings. The steaks were tough, unseasoned, & generally cooked like my ding dong dad would have. The kids Mac & cheese was still in the bag placed into the to go box, but it was the best part of the meal. This sucks because our family had loved Cousins but I think we won’t be coming back after this.
D H — Google review
The initial atmosphere was excellent! I am a meat, potatoes, gravy kind of guy. I ordered chicken fried steak, potatoes and gravy and My wife is a fries and burger person. It is a good thing she is good company for there was a little bit of a wait before food arrived. Unfortunately then the wife had to go find silverware and napkins that were not provided. My food was good but I have never seen my wife not eat fries but she did not this time. Cold and doughy was her description… then we were waiting and waiting and waiting for a check or someone… finally went up to hostess to pay and on the way I found our MIA waitress… see photo…I have to assume it was some sort of emergency text but ya all know what assuming can get ya… my assumption is because the hostess must have gave us a discount without me asking because my bill was less than $40 and I expected it to be more.
TIM O — Google review
Dirty floors, ceiling and bathroom. Food is bland, hot and definitely sub par at best. Prices are as high as an Oregonian on payday. The pot roast is tragic and has a similar consistency as snot. The kids turkey is gross. Fries have been cooked in oil that tastes like fish... definitely off-putting. Waiter was irritating and rude.
Sean W — Google review
I have been here 4 times in the past month. The first 3 times, the food was great with large portions, but service was very slow. However, this last time we had Jenny W as our server and I have to say, she was the best!! The moment we were seated, she was at our table with menus and we were greeted with a happy... Hello cousins!! She was very attentive and had a wonderful personality. Thank you Jenny for the wonderful hospitality!! Because of you I will come back!!

Brunch restaurant
Nestled in a charming historic building on 2nd Street, Petite Provence Boulangerie & Patisserie is a delightful French-inspired café that serves up an array of meals from breakfast through dinner. This gem in The Dalles offers not only scrumptious baked goods and espresso drinks but also hearty to-go sandwiches perfect for picnics. Guests rave about the signature French Onion Soup and the exquisite selection of pastries that are sure to satisfy any sweet tooth.
Warm, intimate and cozy. This restaurant also has friendly - personable staff! I ordered the Monte Cristo. It was tasty and filling. Mr. wonderful ordered the corned beef, special with potato salad. I usually don’t like anyone else’s potato salad, but really liked Petite Provence’s version. Of course, we went home with bread, Petite’s spectacular refrigerator raspberry jam, and a couple of pastries.
Dianna M — Google review
We are big fans of Petite Provence locations and always try and stop by when we're near one. The food here was wonderful, as always. I got the Mediterranean Chicken Salad and a cup of the French Onion Soup. My son got a Jalapeno Mac and Cheese special, and my husband got the Baked Eggs. All of them came out hot and fast and fresh. The waitress forgot our Croissant we had ordered as an app, but brought us THREE to take with us when we mentioned it. Above and beyond, and she was very nice. That raspberry jam they have is worth its weight in gold. They were clearly understaffed, so if I have any feedback it is to staff some additional servers for the floor so your existing staff isn't having to run around so frantically.
Nicole J — Google review
Having just traveled to Paris it's probably not fair to review croissants from Portland OR but here we go. The location I visited (of which they have many) was in The Dalles in the Columbia Gorge. The restaurant atmosphere was good. It was clean and cozy. The wait staff was friendly and helpful. I purchased a butter croissant and was told they are made daily. It was noonish so not the freshest. I ordered a croissant and was charged for the pastry and jam (didn't actually ask for jam but .75$ want enough to argue). It's a large pastry and they warmed it in a microwave then served in a paperbag to go. It's layers are evident and very flaky. Very good mouth feel until the greasy coating and bitter after taste. I'm not sure if it has been sitting too long or the mix was wrong to cause the greasy-ness but for the $4.50 French pastry it was not stellar. Then again the slight bitter taste in the back of the throat would probably be masked if chased with a swig of coffee but I didn't have any at the time. Maybe the butter was a bit old in this batch- not sure. Overall if you're not picky and don't know any better then if you eat one fast with a side of coffee it's probably doable. Come to think of it maybe that's why they push the jam? In fairness I should try them again for a different batch and much earlier in the day before judging too harshly. And having just returned from France may again be unfair.

Staff failure , We were greeted and seated given water, the waitress took orders and served others tho we arrived before them. Logic space/time and paying attention to the customers in order should be the primary factor in food service.

Rivertap Restaurant and Pub offers a relaxed atmosphere with a menu featuring classic barbecue options, locally brewed beers, and live music. The venue also boasts an outdoor patio that welcomes dogs, providing ample seating for customers. Prompt service ensures quick delivery of tasty dishes and satisfying drinks. The strawberry basil mule stands out as a particularly refreshing choice. On a road trp we three made a lunch stop on a Monday. It wasn't crowded. We got a friendly welcome. The two staffers seemed busy so seating took a few minutes. We had two beers and a cider, which were good. We had a Navy Bean Soup, a Farmhouse Salad, and an order of Pulled Pork Rolls. We did wait a longish time for the food to arrive, though. All were very good - except the pulled pork rolls which were rather tasteless, with only the sauce providing flavour. Worse, though, was they were awash in cooking oil! (perhaps the fryer wasn't hot enough?) The server agreed they weren't good, and comped that dish; good for them, and thanks! Sadly lunch was rather spoiled for one of us. EDIT SEP 14. The very good and prompt reply I got to my review led me to increase my "service" rating to 4 stars, remove my "not recommended" comment, and increase my overall restaurant rating from 3 to 4.

I had the hamburger and fries that was delicious. Fresh ground beef and prepared frozen patties. The fries were breaded and served hot. My wife had the Chipotle soup with a side salad. She said it was good, but nothing to write home about.

We stopped in here for an early dinner and beer after a hike. The service was good and the atmosphere was nice. They had a good selection of beer and other drinks. Some of the food was really good and some was just ok. The bacon wrapped potatoes appetizer is really good, and I thought the pulled pork spring roll was good but not so much, my wife. The sliders were not as good as I had hoped but they filled us up.

The vibes were great, they were great to the dogs. They had a special menu for the dogs, that my dog lived. But my husband's burger was over cooked and my chicken was dry.

Outdoor patio is dog friendly! We were able to get seated immediately as it wasn’t too busy. Our food came out quickly and was tasty, and the drinks were good too. The strawberry basil mule was really refreshing. We ordered the boxcar burger and the nashville hot fish sandwich (you could choose between chicken and fish, which I liked). I think they might have forgotten the hot sauce part, but it was still a really good fish sandwich so I didn’t mention anything. Overall it was a good experience. The meals would’ve been under $30 each if I hadn’t ordered a $14 cocktail.

Momma Jane's Pancake House is a delightful breakfast spot that draws in crowds with its generous portions of classic diner fare and a warm, inviting atmosphere. During my visit, the place was bustling, and I quickly understood why! The menu boasts an array of fun pancake flavors, including gluten-free options—a rarity for pancake houses. I indulged in their apple and walnut pancakes, which were not only delicious but also impressively large!
I really enjoyed my experience at Momma Jane’s. At first, I was concerned about parking because I was driving a van and trailering a motorcycle, but there was plenty of room to pull up to the front of the restaurant. As I walked in I could hear the familiar tones of morning conversation from the local coffee club. I stood for a moment and was told to seat myself. It was nice to choose the seat that I wanted. The server was friendly and professional as she explained some of the history of the restaurant as I had asked a few questions about the American Motorcycle motif decorating the walls. It is quite extensive and I enjoyed looking at them. The coffee was hot and fresh and my breakfast was delicious. I ordered the Country Fried Steak, over easy with rye toast. Everything was cooked to perfection and delivered hot. As I was paying upfront I had a clear view of the grill and kitchen and it was spotless. It demonstrates that they really cares and I deeply appreciate the owner and employees for keeping the standards high.

Amazing food every time we are here, awesome service! This is a small family ran restaurant, I noticed many reviews stating long wait times. The food is worth the wait it isn’t t fast food, if you want fast food go to McDonald’s . Fresh, scratch amazing food is worth the wait to us. Also noticed some people complaining about service, we have never had bad service here, not one time. The most laughable is the discrimination claims, never ever have we seen this. Seems many people get what they give and then scream discrimination. We own a restaurant in eastern Oregon and stop here every time we head to the valley. Amazing food, service and atmosphere. Highly recommend 10 out of 10.

Delicious but if you are hitting the road, and in any sort of a rush, will not be the place for you. This place is adorable and definitely somewhere you want to have some time to relax, enjoy taking it all in, and have at least an hour to wait for ordering and your food when it's busy. Thankful for the yummy food, now time to get back on the road!

We were visiting the Dalles and based on the reviews we decided to eat here for breakfast. The Omelets where scrumptious they were big and well stuffed the potatoes where great not greasy in addition to the reasonable pricing the service was welcoming and friendly. The restaurant is packed with random fun motorcycle memorabilia and was a fun, biker themed restaurant. We decided to come back for lunch based on our experience at breakfast and they hit the home run again. If you are in the area and need munchies this place is the go to spot. My dad loved his big salad that was fully loaded with yumminess.
